Rose in Good Faith Seeks to Diversify Through Wholesale

Los Angeles streetwear brand Rose in Good Faith said it’s projecting to hit its first $ 1 million in sales this year, driven by what it hopes will be a ramp up in wholesale and continued growth of direct-to-consumer.
The latter channel is how the brand, started at the beginning of 2017, has so far built a name for itself, selling direct with a focus on specialty pieces and collaborations based around early Aughts nostalgia and niches around the hardcore and metal music subgenres. It’s from those subculture genres that the company’s founders hope to grow their brand.
The result has been collaborations with JNCO and more recently Ed Hardy in a collection that included 50 specialty T-shirts dripping with thousands of Swarovski crystals priced at $ 3,095. The T-shirts, available only to a select group of clients as a precursor to the release of the rest of the collection, sold out in two days, with Tyga among the celebrities spotted in the piece.
Rose in Good Faith is sold in American Rag’s Los Angeles and Dubai stores, in addition to Tokyo’s Nubian, which is the exclusive retailer for the Ed Hardy product.
“The direct-to-consumer growth has been strong,” said cofounder David Teitelbaum. “It’s been doing

Agent Inc., a New Modeling Platform, Seeks to Disrupt Status Quo

Agent Inc., a new modeling app, looks to disrupt the status quo. The app, which launched last month after two years in beta testing, looks to empower models, efficiently connect them with clients for jobs, and protect their safety — a topic of growing concern.
“We vet the clients the same way we vet the models,” said Mark Willingham, cofounder and chief executive officer of Agent Inc., based in Sherman Oaks, Calif. He said his team does a criminal background check, sex offender checks and validation of identity and verifies their businesses. At present, there are 13,000 models registered on the platform (they must be over 18) and more than 2,000 clients. They are adding between 50 and 100 models and clients a day. The web site is joinagent.com. The app, Agent Inc., is available at the App Store for iOS devices.
“We want massive diversity,” said Willingham, on a visit to New York. In order for a model to be able to be featured on the site, “we have to believe someone will hire you.”
Among the companies that have booked models through Agent are Social Revolution, a Los Angeles-based clothing brand; FaceTory, Inc., an L.A. skincare brand; Blue District, an online

Tod’s Seeks to Surprise With Drops, Collaborations

MILAN — Tod’s chief executive officer Diego Della Valle is overturning his company’s business model and launching a new project called Tod’s Factory, in a reference to Andy Warhol.
“It’s work in progress, we started developing it around six months ago,” Della Valle revealed ahead of the Tod’s runway show in Milan on Friday. “It means we will start dropping more collections throughout the year, capsules and limited editions, in collaboration with different individuals and friends of the house.” The executive declined to provide additional details about the designers, but said the first such collection would bow in June or July.
“Collections can no longer be presented every six months, and this is part of a new way to communicate and tell our story,” he explained. “This business model offers great opportunities, we can be faster and better control the collections.” Della Valle declined to say whether the women’s fall show, designed by a team, would be the last for the house. “We want to surprise you,” he said. He has been reviewing the role of a creative director after the exit of Alessandra Facchinetti in 2016, leaving the job to the brand’s team.
Della Valle is courting a younger customer and the collaborators on

Payless Seeks Permission to Shutter 408 Additional Stores

Bankrupt Payless Holdings LLC is asking a St. Louis Bankruptcy Court for permission to shutter another 408 stores.
The footwear retailer, along with 28 affiliated debtors, filed its Chapter 11 petition for bankruptcy court protection on April 4. On May 17, it received the court’s nod to shutter the 389 stores it had planned to close when it filed its voluntary petition. Since then, the company said in court papers that it not only recognized the need to remodel its brick-and-mortar business to align it with worsening retail-industry conditions, it also analyzed whether it needed to close any additional stores to align with its broader financial and operational restructuring. The company, excluding the 389 stores set for closure, still has 3,000 unexpired leases in North America. In the macro picture, Payless has 4,000-plus stores across more than 30 countries.
Among the criteria for whether a store should be closed, the company considered profitability on an earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, amortization and restructuring basis; opportunity for rent concessions from landlords; cash flow, and ability to transfer sales to nearby locations.
Payless said in the court document filed last week that it could close fewer stores if ongoing negotiations with landlords result in consensual modifications

Agent Provocateur Seeks New Investor, Possible Sale

ON THE PROWL: Less than two years after shelving plans to sell Agent Provocateur following a strategic review, 3i is again on the hunt for an investor — or an outright buyer — for the luxury lingerie brand, which has fallen on hard times.
According to industry sources, 3i has begun talking to potential investors, including trade buyers, high-net-worth individuals and sovereign wealth funds, to help breathe new life into the brand, which expanded its worldwide retail network just as luxury sales began to slow and big-spenders — including Russians — stopped traveling.
As reported in November, Agent Provocateur plans to shutter 30 percent of its retail network, reduce headcount at its headquarters by 30 percent and phase down its diffusion line, L’Agent, which is designed by sisters Penélope Cruz and Mónica Cruz Sánchez.
Private equity firm 3i, which acquired a majority stake in the racy lingerie brand in 2007, is also grappling with accounting irregularities at Agent Provocateur that made the company appear more successful than it was.
The company posted revenues of 62 million pounds, or $ 94.8 million at average exchange, and earnings before interest and taxes of 10 million pounds, or $ 15.3 million, for the year ended March 28, 2015. The company cannot file its

Poetry Hour: Roland Mouret Seeks Deeper Bonds With Clients

LONDON — It’s not often that a designer throws open the doors of his bedroom to customers, but that’s just what Roland Mouret is planning to do next year when he fully opens his Manhattan townhouse, which he sees as part shop, part apartment, part refuge.
The French-born, London-based Mouret, who celebrates two decades in business next year, has already opened the shop part of 1006 Madison Avenue, but his private apartment on the top floor is still under construction. The apartment, and its role in the business, reflects the designer’s ideas about fashion, design and retail today.
Mouret talks to WWD about the relationship that designers need to have with their luxury customers; see-now-buy-now, and his plans for 2017, 20 years after he founded the company not in the bedroom, but in his kitchen.

WWD: Why would you open the ultimate private space — your bedroom — to clients at the townhouse?
Roland Mouret: We come to fashion because of stories about people. Think of the apartment of Coco Chanel in Paris: Who doesn’t want to go there and try on Chanel clothes? I think it’s brilliant for me to be able to do that. The bedroom will be open to clients to go
