Endeavor’s Bozoma Saint John on Leaving Uber, Self Belief, and What’s Next

While Bozoma Saint John became rather famous after her memorable address at Apple’s WWDC in 2016, her most recent job transition may have been the most newsworthy. She left Apple in 2017 amid great fanfare to become Chief Brand Officer at Uber, and left that gig almost a year to day later for her current […]

Woman’s Powerful Bikini Instagram Shows The Value Of Self Confidence

In just two photos, one woman made a strong argument for why everyone should be able to feel confident at the beach in a swimsuit.

Rachel Spencer, a confidence and success coach, recently posted two photos of herself to Instagram. In one picture, she is 13 years old in a swimsuit, covering her stomach for the camera. In a present day picture, the 26-year-old is happier and more confident, identifying herself as a “self-love queen.”

“I’ve been sitting here trying to think of a good caption but this photo just makes me sad when I look at it,” she wrote in an Instagram caption. “So how about I ask you a question: Who taught the young girl on the left to hide her tummy before taking pictures in a swimsuit? Who taught her that at only 13 years old, her chubby little body was unworthy of a photographic memory?”

Spencer said the reason she hid her body was because of boys who bullied and teased her about her weight. Over the years, she also felt pressured by images and messaging in the media about things like cellulite and dieting. But thanks to a little time and some self love, she’s in a super positive place thirteen years later ― and she has a message for people who need to get to that place.

“I have a message for all the women who are much older and STILL feel ashamed to show their tummy at the pool: Don’t be,” Spencer said. “Put on that bikini and smile. Don’t feel the need to let other people’s opinions ruin precious memories with your friends and family. Show your daughters what it’s like to flaunt their flaws at the pool. No shame. Your imperfections tell a story. Your body is beautiful. You are BEAUTIFUL.”

I've been sitting here trying to think of a good caption but this photo just makes me sad when I look at it. So how about I ask you a question: Who taught the young girl on the left to hide her tummy before taking pictures in a swimsuit❓ Who taught her that at only 13 years old, her chubby little body was unworthy of a photographic memory❓ It definitely wasn't her parents or family, so who was it? Well, did you know that this innocent young girl was bullied for her weight? Not by the girls. The girls were nice. But the boys…the boys were mean. From then on out, she never wanted to go to the pool, saw boys as a threat, cried to her teachers, etc etc. Things started to get better in middle school, but then came the media. *Knock Knock* Diet culture, fitness, cellulite cream–CELLULITE?? Why was a 13 year old worried about cellulite??? Because the media told her it was bad. That SHE was bad and needed to change. If you couldn't tell by now, the young girl was me. There's a big difference between the closed off, hiding, young girl on the left and the carefree, happy, open girl on the right. ❤️And that difference is self love.❤️ I taught it to myself. I had to. I had to find a way to be happy. The process wasn't quick. I'm still working on it at 26 years old. But I have a message for all the women who are much older and STILL feel ashamed to show their tummy at the pool: Don't be. Put on that bikini and smile. Don't feel the need to let other people's opinions ruin precious memories with your friends and family. Show your daughters what it's like to flaunt their flaws at the pool. No shame. Your imperfections tell a story. Your body is beautiful. You are BEAUTIFUL.

Solange’s Letter To Her Teenage Self Captures How Her Invincibility Was Born

The artistry of Solange Knowles has become an indelible part of contemporary reflections on black womanhood. In a recent essay for Teen Vogue, Solange blesses us with some insight on how she developed into the regal being she is today.

The singer graced Volume II of Teen Vogue’s June issue and her essay, “A Letter To My Teenage Self,” was posted online Wednesday.

A post shared by Solange (@saintrecords) on

In the letter, Solange assures her younger self that all the uncertainty, fear and pain she’s enduring will all serve their purpose in the long run.

And she pays tribute to each youthful version of herself ― including the one most likely to rock micro braids, a stage she eloquently classifies as “the football-player’s-girlfriend-who-wears-braided-blond-highlights-and-swears-by-capri-pants phase.”

“at the time, you are searching,” Solange wrote. “seeking in every corner and pocket of the world for who you are … you will sow each of these chapters in the land that you become.”

Solange shares the impact of everything from the tragedy of a close friend’s death at 17 years old, which she refers to as “the hardest year of [her] life,” to being judged for her looks and free spirit:

“when you go out into the world feeling confident in who you are and what you reflect, young folks will call you names and grown folks will call you names,” she wrote. “It’s ok. one day you will name yourself, and that name will belong to you. it will not be the ones they ordained: “crazy, ugly, attention-seeking, weirdo.”

A significant portion of the letter is rightfully dedicated to mama Tina Knowles and the other women who showed her what black women were truly made of, outside of disparaging media stereotypes.

They were probably in part responsible for all of the cultural introspection that took place within Solange’s iconic album “A Seat at the Table.”

“you thank them for re-writing the script before it was ever etched in your memory,” she wrote of the women.

We thank them too.

Wheelchair Wisdom: To Thine Own Self Be True

If I were given the opportunity to present a gift to the next generation,
it would be the ability for each individual to laugh at himself.
— Charles M. Schultz

Socrates said, “Know thyself.” In Shakespeare’s Hamlet, Polonius cautions, “To thine own self be true.” But what self are we getting to know? To what self should we be true? Where is the self located anyway? On second thought, which self is reading these words?

These questions pondered by playwrights, philosophers, and other serious thinkers–if answers could be worked out through mathematical calculations, mathematicians and scientists would be the most enlightened people on planet. But the self continues to elude the greatest thinkers of our age.

What I know is, there seem to be two voices.

The first voice–the false self–judges and criticizes: “I’m not good/rich/thin/smart enough,” or “Now that I’m in a wheelchair, I have to prove myself,” or “I am now unlovable.”

Our humanity comprises only a small part of the rich experience available to us as total beings. As human beings, we all put a great deal of effort into trying to be who we think we are supposed to be; this is the false self.

The false self is also called the personality or ego. Some aspects of it are inherited; others are developed through experimentation with families, friends, and the culture we live in–our education and our religious upbringing. Though aspects of the personality may change over a lifetime, the false self tends to become frozen and rigid, full of regret and resentment over missed opportunities.

The need to control is probably the most prominent characteristic of the false self.

It is from here that many characteristics spring, because the need to control often runs our lives. This is ironic, considering that we have so little control over reality and what happens in the world around us.

The need to control inevitably leads to frustration and disappointment.

The false self’s characteristic need to control sends it on a search for power from external sources. We have to seek outside ourselves for something that makes us feel good.

We are constantly looking for that event, that nod of approval, that recognition that will make us feel more secure. This constant search for approval is evidence of the false self’s insatiable need for recognition by any means, even negative ones.

Even when the false self is able to break out of a rut, it usually jumps into another one. A new marriage may repeat the patterns that doomed the previous ones. Giving up smoking often leads to overeating.

WHAT ARE SOME ASPECTS OF THE FALSE SELF?

  • • Needs to be right, make others wrong
  • • Needs to control and dominate; runs life
  • • Searches for power from external sources
  • • Seeks outside ourselves for something that makes us feel good
  • • Has an insatiable need for approval and constant recognition
  • • Has a tendency to judge self/others, makes irrational comparisons
  • • Is full of regret, disappointment and resentment over missed opportunities
  • • Tends to become frozen and rigid

WHAT ARE SOME NEGATIVE BELIEFS/FEELINGS OF THE FALSE SELF?

  • Being in a wheelchair, I am powerless, helpless and invisible
  • • I can’t do it myself
  • • I’m all alone
  • • I have lost my sensuality
  • • Others do not want the burden of being my friend

As stated earlier, the false self functions in the realm of personality and the ego. In this realm, we identify with what we look like, what we do for a living, how much money we have. The false self is like a spoiled, jealous child–always wanting to be number one.

It wants you to believe that you are your body.

Contrary to what your false self will let you believe, you are perfect the way you are. Rather than feeling inadequate when you see that someone else has more worldly or physical success than you, ask yourself why you can’t accept yourself the way you are.

Ask yourself what would happen if you shifted your perspective? Instead of seeing yourself as a stressed out human being grasping for enlightenment, for some kind of spiritual experience, think of yourself–as Pierre Teilhard de Chardin so eloquently put it–“as a spiritual being having a human experience.”

Is there a way out? Yes, but not through the false self. When we live in the false self, our lives are narrow, confined, and repetitious. Another notable characteristic of the false self is its tendency to judge. Judging others feels good in the short term, at least. It gives us a momentary sense of superiority and strength over those we are judging.

We also use judgment to put ourselves down. We may spend an unnecessary amount of time comparing ourselves to others, and when we find that they have things we don’t have, we beat ourselves up. We may tell ourselves we need to improve, which sounds very well intentioned, but is really a subtle form of self-judgment.

The true self–the second voice–is our true guide, supporting and acknowledging: “I am healthy, resilient, intuitive and courageous.” The true self affirms our true essence, which is love.

PRACTICE:

Things to act upon and questions to ponder:

• How do you hold yourself back?
• Recall a time when you have done this.
• What beliefs and thoughts are you holding that limit you?
• What mistake are you afraid of making?
• What mistake have you made that you have not let go of?
• When you hold yourself back, in which part of your body do you feel tightness or imbalance?
• What needs to be loved right now?
• Place your hand over your heart and feel the loving going in and through your body.
• Forgive yourself for any judgments you are holding against yourself.
• Describe how you’re feeling inside.
• What have you learned?

Celebrate your True Self,

Much Love,
Linda

Your Spacious Self By Stephanie Bennett Vogt (Paperback)

Overview IT’S A JUNGLE. IN HERE! Behind our stress, clutter, and confusion is an infinitely spacious place one might call stillness or joy. This is our natural state of being, but we usually don’t experience it, because we are caught in a web of material possessions, desires, and fears. Our clutter often becomes another member of the family that we feed, house, and lug around. In Your Spacious Self, author and professional space clearing expert Stephanie Bennett Vogt shows us that it’s not our stuff but the holding on to it that creates a force field of stuck-ness that clouds our perceptions and paralyzes our lives. Clutter is not just the junk spilling out of the closet. It is any thing or thought that prevents us from experiencing who we truly are. With daily tips, meditations, and a decluttering checklist, Your Spacious Self will show you how to: CLEAR THE CLUTTER in your home and in your lifeREVEL IN YOUR OWN SPACIOUSNESS, a place of stillness and joyLET GO OF THE PEOPLE, PLACES, AND THINGS that no longer serve the joyous being that you are Radical in its message and elegant in its simplicity, Your Spacious Self offers a new model that combines the ancient wisdom of space clearing with the modern practicality of clutter clearing. It teaches us that clearing is not just something we do but is also a powerful way to be-one small step, drawer, or moment at a time. 7 Ways to Live as Your True Self

You feel a disconnect with who you are and with what your life looks like. You show the world one person but know there is a different one within, waiting to come out and be seen. You are ready to become this person, your true self, and are wondering how to do so. Here you will find seven ways to help you identify your true self and help you make the transition to become and live as your true self easier.

Listen To Your Inner Voice

Listening to your inner voice will help you become aware of and identify your true self with honesty. It will help you strengthen your voice and overpower anyone else’s voice you are hearing. Ask yourself questions and become aware of how you respond mentally, physically, emotionally, spiritually and energetically, and to what you have to say. It will help you identify your wants, likes, dislikes, desires, etc., without judgements and restrictions, and as a result help you naturally start living as your true self.

Give Yourself The Freedom To Be You

Giving yourself the freedom to be you by letting go of comparisons, labels, status, criticisms, cynicism, etc., will empower who you are within and give you the courage to actualize. It will also allow you to accept your uniqueness and individuality, regardless of whether or not you have any kind of support when becoming who you know you really are.

Make Changes

Making changes to allow your inner self to show through is a must. Getting yourself and everything around you to reflect what you are feeling within reinforces the freedom to express your true self. Empower yourself to make the necessary changes so your true self can actualize. These changes can range from your physical appearance to your lifestyle, and from your relationships to your place of employment. Be bold, take responsibility and break through any fear of going beyond your comfort zone.

Commit To Your Choices And Decisions

Committing to your choices and decisions reinforces the value and worth behind who you are. It validates the belief and trust you have for yourself, especially once doubt and uncertainty arise. It helps you to trust your initial choice and decision of becoming your true self and living as your true self, making it easier to move forward and adjust to your new normal.

Learn To Trust Yourself

Trusting yourself is a necessity in becoming your true self and living as your true self. There will be moments when you are standing out in a crowd or when you are going against the norm because of who you are or what you want. In those moments, trusting yourself will give you the willpower and the courage, along with anything else you might need, to continue pursuing what is in your heart.

Try New Things

Trying new things will help you be able to know if something works for you or not, instead of just wondering or assuming. There are some things you might be uncertain about. You might even be uncertain about whether or not this will work for you, but if there is any desire or curiosity, encourage yourself to at least give it a try. Sometimes if something is not working for you, trying something new might be what you need to redirect you to your path of happiness.

Set Yourself Up For Success

Setting yourself up for success and approaching this transition, and everything else you might come across in life, with a successful outlook will set you up for exactly that. It will help you adapt an optimistic attitude and help you become a person who always finds a solution instead of a person who makes excuses. Expecting success also allows you to follow your happiness, which is fully aligned with your true self. And when you are aligned with your true self, you naturally do what you need to, to live as your true self.

Why You Can’t Help Turning Into Your Teenage Self When You Go Home For The Holidays

There’s a joke that captures the feeling of “regression” that many adults experience when they go home to spend the holidays with their families. It goes like this: For every day you’re home with your family, you lose five years. So you should keep your trip short enough that you’ll be old enough to drive away.

Many adult children know well that returning to the nest can be even more challenging than visiting your parents in another context. You might go home for the holidays and suddenly be surprised to find yourself behaving like a 16-year-old: You fight with your mom over doing chores or going out with your friends instead of participating in family activities. Maybe you’re still criticizing your little brother and his new girlfriend — or you return to that teenage insecurity of feeling like you can never do anything right.

“It’s variable. At different stages of your life you might regress more or less,” Nadine Kaslow, Ph.D., a clinical psychologist at Emory University and editor of the Journal of Family Psychology, told The Huffington Post. “Maybe you go back to your room, which may still be more decorated like a child’s room. You return to the patterns you had when you lived there. It’s challenging, especially early on, to find your way as an adult.”

While regressing doesn’t happen for everyone, it is a fairly common occurrence. And it’s most common among 20-somethings, according to Kaslow. There’s often more flexibility and ease in the relationship once children establish themselves as adults and perhaps start their own families.

But regression can persist until late in life. As psychologist and family counselor Marie Hartwell-Walker, EdD, wrote in a PsychCentral blog, old family roles die hard.

“Never underestimate the seductive draw of what is familiar,” Hartwell-Walker wrote. “It just feels natural to snap back into our well-rehearsed part. The ‘responsible one’ volunteers for more than she really wants to do. The ‘baby’ goes back to playing the cute card in spite of herself. When with her dad, the independent woman can slip once again into the ‘princess’ role she had as a child while her brother starts to swagger a bit like his former teenage jock self.”

Regression is most common when there’s a struggle to transition the parent-child relationship into an adult-adult relationship. Having a successful adult relationship with your parents requires that you feel able to be your own person, and that you’re able to assert yourself without arguments or power struggles, said Kaslow.

For instance, if you bring home a significant other and would like to sleep in the same bed together, but your parents won’t allow that, it’s important to negotiate the situation as adults.

“It might mean you have to get a hotel room … if you want to respect the family values,” said Kaslow. “If you just disrespect what they say, then you’re like a teenager. But if you just do it because they say so and not because it’s right for you, then you’re not really being an adult either.”

Unresolved family conflicts can also make it difficult for family members to break free from old roles and break out of old habits that no longer serve them. “Those families also have a harder time switching to developing those adult relationships,” said Kaslow.

In a healthy adult relationship, information and stories about one’s life are shared equally between parents and children. The parent and adult child can engage in shared activities together, but there is also a level of freedom for alone time.

In an unhealthy relationship, the parents are often critical or unwilling to adjust old traditions to bring in new ideas and traditions. But don’t confuse parental care, affection or doting for an unhealthy inability to change old habits — your parents will always see you as their child, and may enjoy the feeling of taking care of you.

Creating an adult relationship with your parents starts with taking responsibility yourself to make compromises and respect their wishes — even if it means dishing out the cash for that hotel room.

Emotional Expression of Self

First things first: What the heck does emotional expression of self mean? It’s pretty simple actually; emotional expression of self is being free with your emotions. It’s understanding what you’re feeling, letting the important people in your life know how you feel, and being open to both physical and emotional intimacy. And wouldn’t you know it, it’s absolutely vital to living a happy, healthy life!

Bottling up our emotions is akin to wearing around a weighted vest. Each time we hold back a strong feeling or emotion, we add weight to that vest. Very quickly the vest becomes a burden, and eventually it will all but immobilize us. Our emotional health is critical to our overall heath. Expressing ourselves openly allows us to be ourselves and promotes an environment where everyone can be comfortable in his or her own skin. In the past we believed that success made people happy, but recently researchers have discovered that it’s the other way around! Happy people are actually more successful! They are more likely to work toward goals, find resources they need and attract others with their energy and optimism.

I’m not suggesting that we should always say everything we think and feel — of course we shouldn’t. This is more about being in touch with our feelings and understanding what exactly it is that we are feeling and why exactly it is that we are feeling it. There is a time and a place to keep our feelings to ourselves, but when it’s something important involving people who are important to us, we need to express ourselves openly. Now, the time, place, and tone of voice are all incredibly important, and I strongly encourage you to choose wisely.

This is exceptionally true in your love life. How can you be completely intimate without a clear line of communication (with yourself and with your partner)? You’d be surprised how often I discover that a couple has a very clear and open stream of communication everywhere but the bedroom. Is there any place that we feel more emotion than in the bedroom? I don’t think so. It can be the single most difficult place to let go and be yourself because it’s where you are most vulnerable, but that’s what makes it so important.

Luckily, there are ways to improve our understanding of our emotions. Here are a few exercises to strengthen our muscles of thinking and feeling:

  • Choose a quiet, relaxing place and remember each part of the previous day. What were you thinking? How did you feel? To express yourself openly and clearly you first need to understand exactly how you’re feeling.
  • Be completely present in something you’re doing, whether it’s for work or fun. Take in all of your surroundings and focus on exactly how you are feeling at each moment in time. There should be a special depth and richness to the experience that you can start to incorporate into the rest of your life.
  • A clear flood journal can also help us be mindful. Write down what you are thinking about eating and why, what you decide to eat, and afterwards, how you felt about the meal. Just a simple exercise like this can keep us from emotional eating!

It’s so important for each and every one of us to be physically and emotionally healthy. Concentrate even a small amount of time on your emotional health and you’ll see an improvement in both. You’ll also be one step closer to having your S.W.E.E.P in check!
