Doug Ewert to Leave as CEO of Tailored Brands in September

Tailored Brands caused a few jaws to drop Tuesday afternoon when it said that Doug Ewert, its longtime chief executive officer, will be retiring from his position and his post on the board on Sept. 30. At the same time, Bruce Thorn resigned from his position as president and chief operating officer, effective Aug. 31. The company said Thorn is leaving to pursue another opportunity and his new role is expected to be revealed shortly.
Tailored Brands said that “to ensure an orderly transition,” Ewert will serve as a strategic adviser to the company until the end of the calendar year. The board is currently initiating “a comprehensive search process” to identify a new ceo.
Ewert did not respond to a request for further comment on Tuesday.
Ewert, 54, has been with the parent company of Men’s Wearhouse and Jos. A. Bank for more than two decades. But his tenure in the past few years has been rocky. He was at the helm of the business during a nasty, public fight with the corporation’s founder, George Zimmer, that resulted in Zimmer being ousted from the firm in 2013.

Michael Vollbracht Tribute Planned for September at Parsons

The life and work of Michael Vollbracht will be celebrated Sept. 4 at a memorial at The New School’s Parsons School of Design.
Iris Apfel, Bethann Hardison, Kay Unger, Joel Towers, Jeffrey Banks and Stan Herman will be among the 12 speakers who will pay tribute to the fashion designer and illustrator, who died in June at the age of 70. The event will start at 6 p.m. at the school’s auditorium at 66 West 12th Street in Manhattan.
After years of working as an illustrator, Vollbracht switched camps to fashion design and earned a Coty award in his second season. In 1980, two years after starting his signature label without any outside funding, Vollbracht, a dedicated movie fan, told WWD, “I owe my talent to American films.” He also shared his cinematic view of the world with Bill Blass, whom he helped with a museum retrospective at Indiana University and the company, which he took over the creative reigns from Lars Nilsson in 2003.
In addition, donations in Vollbracht’s honor will be accepted to support a scholarship in his name through the Parsons Scholars program. The Kay Unger Family Foundation will match every donation that is received. Vollbracht graduated from Parsons in

The Salting Lands the September Cover of O, The Oprah Magazine, But Founders Plan Growth Carefully

PROCEED WITH CAUTION: While many brands fortunate enough to land the cover of O, the Oprah Magazin” tend to ramp up production, The Salting has taken a much more measured approach.
Eighteen months after the sharply edited unisex label was launched by Michael Smaldone and Michael Ward, Winfrey donned a gold-colored fedora and caftan on the September cover of her magazine. After O’s creative director Adam Glassman e-mailed to share the news, Smaldone said, “I think I almost fell off my chair. It was pretty great.”
Glassman, whom Smaldone has known for years, liked the looks of The Salting and sent a few of his colleagues in to photograph the collection, and later pulled some items and requested a few hats to be made in Winfrey’s size for her personally. Additional clothes were later sent. About a month ago, Smaldone and Ward were tipped off that a cover shot was a possibility with the caveat that nothing is ever certain.

Starbucks to Open First Italian Store in September

MILAN’S CUP OF JOE: Mark your calendars: Starbucks is about to make its debut in Italy, the country whose world-celebrated coffee culture in the Seventies inspired the American chain’s founder Howard Schultz.
On Sept. 6, the Seattle-based company will host an event in Milan to celebrate the opening of the first Italian Starbucks Reserve Roastery.
Occupying a 25,833-square-foot space inside a historic building that formerly housed the city’s central post office, which overlooks Piazza Cordusio near the Bourse and the Duomo cathedral, Starbucks Reserve Roastery will feature the new store concept inaugurated in Shanghai.
This includes a collaboration with Milan-based bakery group Princi, which in partnership with the American coffee maker opened its first international store in Seattle last year. The world’s biggest Starbucks Reserve Roastery will open in Chicago next year.
According to Starbucks, the opening of the Starbucks Reserve Roastery in Milan will kick off a strategy aimed at bringing the coffee chain to the streets of the most important Italian cities.

Emporio Armani to Host Coed Runway Show in September

MILAN — Emporio Armani is the latest Italian brand to opt for a coed show.
As Camera Nazionale della Moda Italiana president Carlo Capasa revealed during a press conference on Thursday presenting the schedule of the upcoming Milan Men’s Fashion Week, the fashion label will skip its traditional men’s fashion show in June to host a coed runway show in September during the city’s Women’s Fashion Week. The coed show won’t take place at Giorgio Armani’s theater on Via Bergognone, as per tradition, but in a still-undisclosed location. That said, the signature Giorgio Armani men’s show will be held on June 18 at the theater.
Separately, Furla said on Thursday it will also stage a coed presentation in September.
While Emporio Armani joins the likes of Gucci and Bottega Veneta, for example, Capasa announced new entries in the June calendar including London-based Besfxxk and Italian label Vìen. South Korean fashion house Spyder, French brand Ih Nom Uh Nit and Italian fashion houses Doucal’s and Triple RRR, the line designed by Roberto Cavalli’s son Robert. Diesel Black Gold will not hold a show, but will present its spring collection to retailers, while the second Diesel Red Tag capsule collection will be unveiled on the catwalk. NEW ROMANTICS: Ahead of its move next season to a see-now-buy-now format, Mother of Pearl creative director Amy Powney hosted appointments to give press a preview of the fall collection, which will be shown on the runway in London in September.
Powney looked to the 19th-century Romantic period, and the desire of artists and poets to return to nature in reaction to industrialization, for her inspiration, making much of florals and frills.
Her favorite artist, Caravaggio, provided the inspiration for the moody darkness of the palette, his chiaroscuro technique of rendering light and dark coming through in the dramatic flowers printed on heavy satins, the artist’s Renaissance period evident in the opulence of deep black velvets and heavy golden jacquards.
The brand’s sporty DNA was evident in the great quilted zip-front coat in a lush floral satin, and in the baby pink tweed tracksuit that had raw-edge frills on the outside of the sleeves. And the brand’s signature pearls were at work on many shoulder seams, tucked in the folds of yet more frills.
Powney’s Mother of Pearl collections get stronger from season to season and, when the full collection hits the catwalk later this year, it is sure to impress.

BACK AT IT: The morning after the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute “Manus x Machina” Gala — for which he sported icy-blue contacts and matching, custom Balmain with his partner in crime, Kim Kardashian — Kanye West called into the Steve Harvey Morning Show to talk about his career, his controversies with Wiz Khalifa and Taylor Swift, and the upcoming tour for his seventh studio album, “The Life of Pablo.”
When Harvey pressed for exact tour dates, West replied: “My tour game is strong,” adding that he’s looking to start in September. “We’re working on some of the ideas right now. I’m trying to inspire these kids the way Disney inspired me,” he said. This Is How Many Plus-Size Models Appear In September Issue Fashion Editorials

Sometimes it seems as though the fashion industry is more inclusive than ever before. In the past year, there’s been an increase in the number of mature models fronting ad campaigns and more people with disabilities on the runways of New York Fashion Week. Right now, eight black women are featured on September magazine covers

But there are definitely major strides to be made

We flipped through the September issue fashion editorials of seven major magazines — Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, W, Elle, Marie Claire, InStyle and Cosmopolitan — to see if we could find any plus-size models. 

The results weren’t great.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the average waist size for women aged 20 and over is 37.5 inches. Depending on which retail store you consult, this translates to a slightly different pant size, but all of them qualify as plus-size. (At Gap, a 37.5 inch waist is between a size 18 and a size 20, at Coldwater Creek it translates to roughly a size 16. At Lane Bryant, it’s about a size 18.) 

So, if the average woman is plus-size, why are there zero plus-size models in these fashion editorials?

Yeah, we’re not really sure either.

In the fall of 2003 I’m in the streets of Washington, DC doing stills for the filming of “National Treasure.” A young man and his Mom, Christian and Karen Glymph, are closely watching the proceedings. Christian, then aged 17, is a passionate filmmaker, who already has made a number of short films. He shares his work with me and it displays a distinct sense of style and knowledge of technique and conventions. We stay in touch over time and he keeps me posted on his new projects. I am impressed by the development and growth of his work and skills. A few years later, during filming of the second “National Treasure”, I help Christian get a production assistant job on the film. We continue to stay in touch, via phone mostly and email. I do what I can to encourage him. At one point, he comes up with a very fresh, unique story/character idea for a popular film franchise. Excited for and by this, I connect him with the producer of the franchise, loving the possibility of this young, gifted artist having success. Sadly, this producer writes Christian a nasty cease and desist letter, missing the whole point and gift of this connection. Temporarily disheartened by this, Christian eventually evolves his idea into a story unrelated to the franchise but still retaining its essence. This past September, Christian and Karen come to New York from DC to attend the opening of my KINDSIGHT® exhibit at the 92nd Street Y, where, near the end of the opening when most guests have left, we make this picture. Christian and I speak a couple of times following this and he indicates something about some medical tests. But I don’t get the full impact of this until, a couple of weeks ago, as we’re speaking on the phone, he tells me that he has stage 4 brain cancer and is undergoing chemo and radiation therapy. My heart plummets through the floor at this news, and we have a long, good conversation about existence, life, death, spirit, deeper truth and the definition of our being. One thought that emerges strongly for me is wanting to see Christian direct a full on feature film. If you are in a position to help this happen, be ready for a call from me. And if you want to take the initiative and call me, please, do it. I will connect you with Christian. The beacon of kindsight erases the shadow of hindsight.

E! Is Pulling The Plug On ‘Fashion Police’ Until September

LOS ANGELES (AP) — “Fashion Police” is taking a break after losing co-hosts Kelly Osbourne and Kathy Griffin and plans to slip into something new for fall, the E! channel said.

Co-hosts Giuliana Rancic and Brad Goreski and executive producer Melissa Rivers will be back in September with the series, which will “evolve” into its next chapter, E! said in a statement Tuesday.

Previously, E! said the celebrity critique fest would air as scheduled March 30 despite the exits of Osbourne and Griffin.

The hiatus announcement came a day after Griffin went on “The View” and discussed why she chose to quit March 12 after just seven episodes. The comedian, who replaced the late Joan Rivers, her friend and mentor, already had tweeted about leaving because she was uneasy being part of the show.

Griffin told “The View” Monday that the E! series didn’t suit her improvisational style and that she felt forced to “comment about pictures of beautiful women in perfect dresses and say kind of bad things.”

As a feminist and a comic, she said, it didn’t feel right.

Osbourne left the show in late February, after complaining about Rancic’s red-carpet criticism of African-American singer-actress Zendaya’s dreadlocks. Rancic said they suggested the smell of marijuana.

Zendaya went online to slam the remarks as “outrageously offensive” and Rancic later apologized, saying the experience taught her not to perpetuate cliches and stereotypes.

E! did not detail how “Fashion Police” would change or who its new co-hosts will be. The show has faltered since losing the wily, tart-tongued Joan Rivers, Melissa’s mother.

Mabou, age 8, fluently speaks eight languages (with more in the works) and plays eight musical instruments. When I saw and heard her on Katie Couric, my heart soared, for I have long held the deep belief that knowing multiple languages fosters understanding, tolerance and inclusion in our world and that our educational system should teach at least five languages from the very beginning of schooling. In this regard, Mabou’s parents, who recognized Mabou’s penchant for language during her infancy, are great visionaries for fostering and nurturing Mabou’s language and expression abilities. I myself, in my advancing age, have learned how to say “thank you” in many languages and I have found that even this one word said in one’s language opens connection with others all over. I connect with Mabou’s mother, Esther, and a meeting is arranged. They arrive together at the 92nd Street Y and we go into the art gallery there where my KINDSIGHT'” exhibit is currently on view. My hope is that their seeing this work’s celebration of human spirit will clarify my joy in meeting them. I speak limited phrases I know in other languages and in each case, Mabou replies in that language with her angelic voice and smile. We then go out into the nearby streets and make some photos.
