Tom Brokaw Slams Woman Who Accused Him of Sexual Harassment: ‘I Am Angry, Hurt and Unmoored’

Journalist Tom Brokaw eviscerated one of the women accusing him of sexual harassment in a memo to some NBC News colleagues Friday.

The Hollywood Reporter obtained a copy of the email, in which Brokaw, 78, characterizes  Linda Vester as “a former colleague who left NBC News angry that she had failed in her pursuit of stardom.” (The Associated Press confirmed the authenticity of the memo, too.)

In a Washington Post report published on Thursday, Vester, 52, claimed Brokaw made an unwanted advance, including a forcible attempt to kiss her, on two occasions in the 1990s. At the time, Vester was in her 20s and did not file a complaint.

But Brokaw staunchly denies her allegations, writing, “I am angry, hurt and unmoored from what I thought would be the final passage of my life and career, a mix of written and broadcast journalism, philanthropy and participation in environmental and social causes that have always given extra meaning to my life.”

Vester, he said, “has unleashed a torrent of unsubstantiated criticism and attacks on me more than twenty years after I opened the door for her and a new job at Fox news.”

He went on to give his version of their two meetings, during which he said she discussed her career and “office gossip.”

“I deeply resent the pain and anger she inflicted on my wife, daughters and granddaughters – all women of considerable success and passion about women’s rights which they personify in their daily lives and professions,” he concluded. “We’ll go on as a family that pursues social justice in medical emergency rooms, corporate offices, social therapy, African women’s empowerment and journalism. And no one woman’s assault can take that away.”

In a separate memo,  NBC News chairman Andy Lack told the staff, “We take allegations such as these very seriously, and act on them quickly and decisively when the facts dictate.”

Time’s Up Raises $21 Million for Legal Defense Fund to Help Victims of Sexual Harassment

The Time’s Up legal defense fund is already helping victims of sexual harassment.

Two months after the Time’s Up movement launched, the National Women’s Legal Center has started matching victims of sexual harassment with a network of lawyers and public relations professionals provided by the legal defense fund.

“Since Jan. 1, we’ve had over 1,600 people seek assistance,” NWLC President and CEO Fatima Goss Graves tells PEOPLE. “That number is continuing to grow, which tells us that the need is great.”

“People have begun to boldly share their stories and now their boldly beginning to seek assistance,” adds Graves.

To date, over 600 attorneys have joined the network.

“Some attorneys take cases pro bono while others will do it at reduced rates,” says Graves. “Everyone who joins this network has agreed to provide a free consultation. We are continuing to build out and recruit additional attorneys.”

The Time’s Up initiative has raised over $ 21 million for the legal defense fund, which helps victims of sexual harassment protect themselves from sexual misconduct and the fallout from reporting it.

“The donations have come from a real range of donors, more than 20,000 people have given to the fund. People have given from every state in the United States and globally,” says Graves.

More than 20,000 people and groups have donated so far, in sums ranging from $ 5 to $ 2 million.

“It’s critical that we keep the momentum up. We have been really successful in raising so much in such a short period of time and driving attention to the cause,” she says. “The need is so great. We aren’t going to stop.”

Movement starters Meryl StreepReese WitherspoonJennifer Aniston and Shonda Rhimes each donated $ 500,000, while Taylor Swift and Oprah Winfrey chimed in with $ 100,000 each. Natalie Portman, Emma Stone, Jessica Chastain and Cate Blanchett continued the donations with $ 50,000 each.

To donate to the Time’s Up Legal Defense Fund, which will provide subsidized legal support to women and men in all industries who have experienced sexual harassment, assault, or abuse in the workplace, visit its GoFundMe page. Learn more about Time’s Up, an organization of women in entertainment combating sexual harassment and inequality, on its website.

More than 300 prominent actresses and female agents, writers, directors, producers and entertainment executives signed an impassioned open letter that officially announced the movement on New Year’s Day.

“The struggle for women to break in, to rise up the ranks and to simply be heard and acknowledged in male-dominated workplaces must end; time’s up on this impenetrable monopoly,” the letter read in the New York Times.

Transparent’s Jeffrey Tambor ‘Vehemently’ Denies Sexual Harassment Allegations

Jeffrey Tambor “adamantly and vehemently” denies the sexual harassment claims brought against him by a former assistant.

In a statement to Deadline on Wednesday, the Transparent star said, “I am aware that a former disgruntled assistant of mine has made a private post implying that I had acted in an improper manner toward her.”

“I adamantly and vehemently reject and deny any and all implication and allegation that I have ever engaged in any improper behavior toward this person or any other person I have ever worked with,” Tambor, 73, continued. “I am appalled and distressed by this baseless allegation.”

The Golden Globe and Emmy-winning actor’s denial is in response to claims Tambor’s former assistant, Van Barnes, reportedly made this week in a private Facebook post. Barnes accused the actor “of implied inappropriate behavior,” according to Deadline.

A spokesperson for Amazon Studios, the production company behind the Jill Soloway-created dramedy, confirmed to the outlet that they have launched an investigation.

WATCH: Jeffrey Tambor Dedicates His SAG Award to Transgender Men and Women

The allegations against Tambor come more than a month after the former head of Amazon Studios, Roy Price, resigned following a sexual harassment claim that was brought against him.

In mid-October, The Hollywood Reporter published an interview with Isa Hackett — daughter of author Philip K. Dick and executive producer of Amazon series Man in the High Castle — in which she alleged Price propositioned her at San Diego Comic-Con in 2015.

Hackett said she was “inspired” to go public with the incident following the “braver” women who came forward with accusations against disgraced mogul Harvey Weinstein.

McKayla Maroney’s Olympic Teammates Support Her After Sexual Abuse Revelation: So Proud of ‘Your Strength’

McKayla Maroney’s 2012 Olympic teammates are rallying around her after the elite gymnast alleged on Twitter that she was a victim of years of sexual abuse by former USA Gymnastics team doctor Larry Nassar, who was fired in 2015 after almost two decades with the organization.

“I was molested by Dr. Larry Nassar, the team doctor for the US Women’s National Gymnastics Team, and Olympic team,” Maroney, 21, wrote in the Twitter post under the #MeToo hashtag, which has remained a trending topic on social media after a number of women accused Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein of sexual assault earlier this month.

“It started when I was 13 years old, at one of my first National Team training camps, in Texas, and didn’t end until I left the sport.”

Just hours after revealing her story, members of Maroney’s 2012 Olympic team voiced their support, including Aly Raisman, Jordyn Wieber and Kyla Ross.

Maroney’s heartbreaking post goes into detail about Nassar’s alleged assaults.

According to Maroney, Nassar’s behavior worsened during the 2011 World Championships, when she was given a sleeping pill by the doctor during a flight only to wake up in his hotel room later.

“Sure, from the outside looking in, it’s an amazing story,” Maroney says of her storied career. “I did it. I got there, but not without a price.”

RELATED VIDEO: Shawn Johnson East Reacts to Weinstein Scandal in Wake of Sexual Misconduct in USA Gymnastics

More than 80 women have accused Nassar of sexual assault. In July, Nassar pleaded guilty to three child pornography charges in federal court, ABC News reported via ESPN. In exchange for Nassar’s guilty plea, U.S. prosecutors have agreed not to pursue charges in two additional incidents of alleged sexual crimes with minors. He is scheduled to be sentenced in federal court on Dec. 7, according to the Lansing State Journal.

He still faces 33 charges of criminal sexual conduct in Michigan, according to USA Today. The Lansing State Journal reports jury selection begins in the state case the same week as his federal sentencing.

A lawyer for Nassar did not immediately respond to a request for comment from PEOPLE. A spokeswoman for Attorney General Bill Schuette declined to comment on Nassar’s case. He remains in federal custody in Michigan.

Maxine Waters Just Used Comey’s Testimony To Call Out Trump’s Alleged Sexual Assault

Maxine Waters put President Donald Trump on blast on Wednesday afternoon using his favorite communication medium: Twitter.

A few hours earlier, the Senate Intelligence Committee published James Comey’s seven-page prepared testimony, detailing the former FBI director’s interactions with President Trump. (Comey will be testifying in front of the Senate Intelligence community on Thursday.)

In his testimony, Comey wrote that on Feb. 14 he told Attorney General Jeff Sessions that the President had addressed him alone, something that presidents normally do not do. Comey ― who at the time was still the FBI director ― asked Sessions not to allow President Trump to engage in one-on-one conversations with him because it was “inappropriate.”

Comey wrote (emphasis ours):

I spoke with Attorney General Sessions in person to pass along the President’s concerns about leaks. I took the opportunity to implore the Attorney General to prevent any future direct communication between the President and me. I told the AG that what had just happened ― him being asked to leave while the FBI Director, who reports to the AG, remained behind ― was inappropriate and should never happen. He did not reply.

Later Wednesday afternoon, Congresswoman Maxine Waters used Comey’s testimony to call President Trump out for his lengthy record of alleged sexual harassment and assault. (Sixteen women have publicly accused the president of sexual assault.)

“So Comey told Jeff Sessions he didn’t want to be alone with Trump. Women across the country can relate,” she tweeted.

Only an hour after Waters tweeted the spot-on sentiment, the tweet had received over 5,000 retweets and 12,000 likes.

Friendly Reminder From Lauren Jauregui That You Can Be Sexual AND A Feminist

Lauren Jauregui is arguably Fifth Harmony’s most outspoken, politically “woke” member. Since penning an open letter to Donald Trump supporters, and chatting with HuffPost back in March about immigration and feminism, Jauregui has made it clear she is not afraid to fight for what she believes in.

In an interview with Vulkan Magazine, Jauregui shared her thoughts on feminism, the meaning of modern-day girl power, and the role Fifth Harmony plays in conveying a positive and inspirational message for other women.

The interviewer asks Jauregui if she feels her passion for feminism is somewhat hypocritical, given the “sexualized image” that she and the other members of Fifth Harmony embody. Her response to that criticism could not have been better.

I would say that regardless of how the brand has been created, we are four hard working women who have succeeded in making our dream to become artists a more possible reality through this. We’ve reached millions of people all over the world who watch our interviews and listen to the message beyond the sexualization, which is to love yourself first and to understand your worth.

Jauregui openly acknowledged that some of her song’s lyrics have flirtatious, sometimes even provocative, undertones, but she was quick to point out that embracing one’s sexuality should not take away from any feminist convictions. She explained that “women embracing their sexuality should never be a reason to disregard their intellect or ability to speak on topics beyond that.”

Jauregui also noted that numerous fans have turned to the group’s songs for comfort and emotional support.

“We had so many of our fans tell us how worthless they felt before they found out about us and watched our interviews and listened to our music,” she said.

Now if that isn’t female empowerment, we don’t know what is.

Keke Palmer Accuses Trey Songz Of Using ‘Sexual Intimidation’ To Get Her In His Video

“Scream Queens” star Keke Palmer has accused Trey Songz of featuring her in his new music video, “Pick Up the Phone,” without her consent.

On Saturday, the actress shared a post on social media in which she alleges Songz ignored her wish to not be included in the video and accused him of using “sexual intimidation.”

“This is preposterous,” she wrote in an Instagram caption. “How am I in this video Trey? After you found me in a closet HIDING because I was so afraid of anymore conflict. Literally my last option was to hide because you all would not listen when I said I did not want to be in the video the FIRST time. Just cause you give someone food and alcohol and throw in a little sexual intimidation doesn’t mean they will buckle.”

The 23-year-old actress said she was “secretly filmed” for the video, which shows her for a brief moment sitting on the couch using her phone as MikexAngel says, “I palm her p***y like Keke / Like Keke, like Keke.”

She referenced a few of her previous Instagram posts, in which she called out the entertainment industry’s sexism and misogyny.

“This is the sexism and misogyny I refer to because if I was a dude, he wouldn’t have even tried me like this,” she wrote. “Let this be a lesson to all, I’m not for the bullshit. I’m serious about my business and you will not use my likeness without MY permission. When you in front of a boss you treat them like one, like I treat YOU. NO MEANS NO!!!!!!!”

This is preposterous. How am I in this video Trey? After you found me in a closet HIDING because I was so afraid of anymore conflict. Literally my last option was to hide because you all would not listen when I said I did not want to be in the video the FIRST time. Just cause you give someone food and alcohol and throw in a little sexual intimidation doesn't mean they will buckle. Yet, you still disrespected me as a young women, whom you've known since she was TWELVE. YOU STILL, defied my wishes and in turn showed your lack of respect for a brand that took me fourteen years to build and put me in the video against my wishes. Come on bruh, I clearly said no and you said okay, yet I was being secretly filmed when you told me "let me just show you the idea"?? Wow. This is what I'm referring to in my previous post, this is the sexism and misogyny I refer to because if I was a dude, he wouldn't have even tried me like this. Let this be a lesson to all, I'm not for the bullshit. I'm serious about my business and you will not use my likeness without MY permission. When you in front of a boss you treat them like one, like I treat YOU. NO MEANS NO!!!!!!! People have to listen to women and stop questioning them and their intelligence. Speak up, cause when you look someone in the face and they say "I understand. You don't have to feel pressured to do the video" and they STILL put you in it, it is a violation. It would be great to be able to handle these things privately but why when they aren't respected?

A photo posted by Laurennnn Palmer (@kekepalmer) on

Following her initial post, Palmer shared two videos in which she described the alleged secret filming, which she said happened at a party hosted by Songz. She also responded to a couple of people on Twitter, reiterating her story.

Later that night, Songz seemingly responded to the accusations with a few tweets. Though he didn’t use her name, it appears he was referring to Palmer, claiming, “Babygirl buggin. Point blank period. Got my number, coulda called, saw the cameras and the lights, heard action.”

Neither party has commented further, but The Huffington Post has reached out to representatives for Palmer and Songz, and will update this post accordingly.

Sexual Assault Survivor Draws Powerful Comic About Election Day

In the wake of President-elect Donald Trump’s win, one woman put her feelings on paper in the form of a gut-wrenching illustration.

Created by artist Amy Camber, the short comic illustrates what so many sexual assault survivors experienced during such a tumultuous and triggering campaign season. As a survivor herself, Camber told The Huffington Post that she felt compelled to create the comic.

“These past weeks have shaken me to my core,” Camber said. “Every woman I know was reeling after hearing Trump bragging about sexually assaulting women. What he said, along with his dismissal of those words as ‘locker room talk,’ reminded us every time we’ve been demeaned, treated as less-than, spoken to inappropriately, or touched without our consent.”

Over a dozen women have publicly accused Trump of sexual assault, and yet ― somehow ― our country still voted him into the highest office of power.

“It was one thing to endure this [misogyny] during the campaign but, now, this is our President-elect,” she told HuffPost. “It’s sickening. And I don’t want people to forget about what he said.”

While Camber pointed out that this comic illustrates her specific experience with assault and the triggers she faced during the election, she realizes it’s an experience many survivors share.

Now, more than ever, Camber hopes that survivors will come forward with their stories.

“In the upcoming weeks, we will be asked to suspend judgement, to wait and see what he’s ‘really like,’” Camber said. “But just as we’ve seen a rise in hate crimes and despicable acts of racism and xenophobia this past week, the damage of Trump’s campaign is already done.”

Head over to Camber’s personal website to see more of her work.

The Naked Country: Sexual Freedom in Ancient Greece

The Naked Country: Sexual Freedom in Ancient Greece

Over a thousand prostitutes served in the Temple of Aphrodite in Corinth, and it was a mark of great piety if a woman went there and coupled with a stranger. Sex was at the heart of life in ancient Greece, and so was the beauty of the human body – which was why completely naked servants served at banquets, and athletes and wrestlers trained and competed in the nude – watched often by an enthusiastic audience of women none of whom were averse to a closer encounter. The Greeks loved to look at a beautiful naked body, and were not averse to a close encounter with one. In an exchange of letters, brother and sister Arsenius and Ligeia frankly describe their enthusiastic entry into adult life in Corinth (described by historians as sex-mad) and the more sophisticated capital, Athens. Their tastes developed quickly, and are surprisingly similar to those of today.

9 Harrowing Images That Capture The Lasting Impact Of Sexual Assault

Survivors of assault and abuse are sharing their experiences on a powerful new Tumblr, Lasting Impact.

(Story continues below.)

lasting impact

Founder Alison, who asked that her last name remain private, created Lasting Impact to raise awareness about the long-lasting impact that incidents of sexual assault, domestic violence, and emotional and physical abuse have on those who experience them. The project is also a place for survivors to share stories of healing.

“As a survivor of childhood sexual assault, I struggled for many years with mental health issues that impacted almost every aspect of my daily life and left me feeling confused and alone,” Alison told The Huffington Post. “It wasn’t until I began to connect with other survivors that I came to realize that this is a common and valid response to trauma, and it was only then that I truly began to heal.”

lasting impact

The Tumblr entries come from survivors who write in to share how their experiences affected and changed them. Some also share how they have healed from their traumas and found hope for the future.

“Survivors often face a myriad of psychological, emotional, social, and physical challenges following an assault, and I wanted to expand the conversation about sexual assault and domestic violence to include the complex, long-term toll trauma takes on an individual,” Alison told HuffPost.

lasting impact

Alison also hopes that the Tumblr will be a positive place for survivors.

“While the campaign focuses primarily on the challenges faced by survivors, it also shows that we all have an incredible capacity for courage, resilience, and growth,” she told HuffPost. “Survivors’ stories do not have to begin and end with fear, violation, and despair. It is my hope that when survivors read these stories, they recognize that their experiences are valid and understand that no matter what they are feeling, they are never alone.”

Carnegie Mellon Students Create Interactive Graphic Novel To Teach How To Stop Sexual Assault

A class at Carnegie Mellon University has created an interactive graphic novel aimed at helping students better understand how to spot warning signs and intervene to stop sexual assault in real social situations.

The online game, “Decisions that Matter,” walks users through various scenarios on campus. Your character might experience catcalling, notice someone being groped by a friend or go to a party where a sexual assault may or may not take place, depending on the choices you make. The game is meant to provide a better way for students to understand how an approach called “bystander intervention” actually works.

cmu decisions that matter

The class’ goal was to create something students wouldn’t “roll their eyes” at, unlike some other products on the market.

“We think this is really different — a welcome experience — that makes people want to think harder about it,” said Andy Norman, an adjunct faculty member in CMU’s philosophy department.

“One of the things I first said when they came to me,” said Jessica Klein, CMU’s coordinator of gender programs and sexual violence prevention, “I said, ‘I am so tired of these cheesy products with these standard stock photos of white people in a business setting.’ It’s so not relatable.”

In fact, the students are so pleased with their project, they’re offering it for free to other colleges to use in their freshman orientation programs. Klein said her office is discussing how they’ll incorporate it into their own schoolwide efforts. One possibility is that the school will hold small group sessions, perhaps within a fraternity or led by a resident adviser, where students can play through the game and then discuss it.

cmuahole

The interdisciplinary project course is designed to combine social sciences with technology in ways that address actual issues in society. The class, part of CMU’s Entertainment Technology Center, went through 30 revisions of the game’s script and play-tested the results. Students were trying to guard against elements “that sounded corny or sounded too preachy, or [where] the point was too obvious,” Norman said.

“They worked very hard to make sure the story is not predictable and the answers you are expected to give are not predictable,” he explained.

cmuummm
cmu well it might

Savannah Badalich, a student at the University of California, Los Angeles, noted with approval that the game includes “a diverse group of students saying things students would actually say.”

“I love that it covers sexual harassment, and in a real setting off the bat,” said Badalich, who founded the anti-rape group 7000 In Solidarity at UCLA. Sexual harassment is one of the hardest things to explain to students, she said — especially certain ideas, like how catcalling is actually harassment.

Badalich added that she hopes “Decisions that Matter” will eventually also incorporate stalking, intimate partner violence and LGBTQ relationships.

If the game doesn’t address those issues, then it “erases the experiences of LGBTQ survivors and male survivors,” said Tracey Vitchers, chair of the nonprofit advocacy group Students Active for Ending Rape.

“Other problematic aspects of ‘Decisions that Matter’ have to do with the positioning of the characters themselves,” Vitchers told The Huffington Post. “[Character] Natalie is positioned as having very little agency, which reinforces negative stereotypes about survivors and/or potential survivors. And Luke, her love interest, is positioned as an unintentional aggressor who simply doesn’t understand that what he is doing is wrong.”

Vitchers said she’s not a fan of most other products on the market, usually in the form of apps, that claim to offer a way for potential victims to stop attacks. While she agrees that bystander intervention can help create a community emphasis on stopping rape, Vitchers said she’s worried colleges will focus too much on these approaches at the expense of discussing consent.

But Klein hopes the game will help reach people who do not think they’re capable of perpetrating this type of violence, as well as people who might intervene in a situation.

“It’s so easy for people to say, ‘Well, I wouldn’t have gone to that place in the first place,’ and that’s so victim-blaming,” Klein said. “You don’t know what you would do unless you’re actually in that situation. [In this game], you’re confronting what you actually might do in that situation.”

How Laura Kipnis’ ‘Sexual Paranoia’ Essay Caused A Frenzy At Northwestern University

Northwestern University film professor Laura Kipnis was cleared in a Title IX investigation by the university on Friday, following graduate student complaints over an essay she published in February in the Chronicle of Higher Education.

The article, titled “Sexual Paranoia Strikes Academe,” discussed university policies governing sexual misconduct, student-faculty relationships and speech on campuses. It described lawsuits between a Northwestern philosophy professor and two students who accused him of sexual assault.

Students took issue with the piece, saying Kipnis was describing a real-life case and that her facts were off. They accused Kipnis of retaliatory behavior and creating a hostile environment, and the school opened an investigation into the case.

Complainants in the case told The Huffington Post that they reached out to Kipnis about their concerns, and she did not offer to correct her piece. They then turned to the Chronicle and asked for specific corrections. One sticking point was Kipnis’ original assertion that the unnamed professor and the graduate student were dating. In the actual case on campus, the student in question has said she was not dating the professor. The Chronicle has since changed its wording to say that “according to his complaint,” the professor and student had previously dated.

On Friday, Northwestern told the parties they reached a conclusion of “no findings,” meaning the evidence did not reach a preponderance of evidence that Kipnis was “responsible” for the charges. The complainants told HuffPost that university investigators declined to provide them a copy of the full investigation report.

The investigation became public prior to its conclusion thanks to another Kipnis essay published Friday in the Chronicle of Higher Education. In that piece, Kipnis described the reaction to her first piece and the charges brought against her.

Some in the academic community worried that Kipnis’ critique of university policies around sexual misconduct could result in a Title IX investigation that could have put her status as a tenured professor in jeopardy. Title IX is a requirement that colleges address and prevent discrimination and harassment on campus, as well as sexual assault involving students.

However, the students who made the complaints about the February essay said they were mainly concerned with alleged errors in Kipnis’ essay. They’re also upset about a tweet from Kipnis suggesting dating was being redefined as rape.

Students thought the tweet was directed at a specific student on campus who has accused a philosophy professor of sexual assault. Kipnis told The Huffington Post that it wasn’t about anyone in particular.

“[The complaint] was just about the factual inaccuracies,” one of the graduate students who filed the complaints told The Huffington Post. “The basis of our complaint was that she said things that were false and she refused to correct them. I’m not even sure I support the ban on faculty-student relationships.”

The Chronicle added some corrections to the original piece after students contacted the publication.

Both experts and Kipnis have pointed out that had she not been an employee of Northwestern, she would not have been responsible for answering to the students’ complaints.

In her latest essay, Kipnis questioned “why a professor can’t write about a legal case that’s been nationally reported, precisely because she’s employed by the university where the events took place.” Such a block would suggest that “academic freedom doesn’t extend to academics discussing matters involving their own workplace,” Kipnis said.

“It doesn’t serve the institutions and the entire academic community if they feel like they have to talk about the issue on eggshells,” said Joe Cohn, legislative and policy director at the civil liberties group the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education.

Cohn argued that there should have been a mechanism where Northwestern could have quickly dismissed the complaints against Kipnis prior to the investigation — similar to how a court can dismiss a lawsuit.

“Administrators who receive complaints should always read them to see if there is something to this, but when a complaint falls so far out of what is appropriate, [administrators] should as quickly as possible say so,” he said.

“I think what people don’t really realize with this Title IX apparatus, and what’s coming out in this case, is that it makes faculty more vulnerable to [self-censorship], really, because these cases are possible,” Kipnis told HuffPost.

Kipnis said she decided to write a second essay because she got the sense from other faculty members that they were afraid to voice concerns about criticizing Title IX issues, and because she believes the investigation process for student complaints should be more transparent.

She said she had not been deeply reviewing everything about campus sexual assault and Title IX, and didn’t until recently know of groups like Know Your IX and FIRE, which are active in the debate over campus sexual assault and harassment. Suddenly, she said, she found herself put on trial by Northwestern under this law.

Kipnis also said that investigators from the school approached her about mediation. According to Kipnis, they told her the complainants were willing to drop the case if she would apologize and promise to never write about the issue again.

The complainants say they never made such an offer to investigators or anyone else.

“That never happened,” the graduate student told HuffPost. “We never offered to withdraw our complaints, we never asked her to apologize, we never asked that she never write about this again.”

One of the other complainants also wrote to the investigators about the mediation offer after Kipnis’ second essay was published: “I would like to make unequivocally clear that is is absolutely false,” she said in an email shared with HuffPost. The complainants said they have not heard a response from the investigators.

The complainants said they side with Kipnis on a number of issues she raised about the Title IX procedure in her essay. For example, they don’t understand why Kipnis had to jump through hoops to find out the charges against her and couldn’t get them in writing, or why it took two weeks to inform her of the complaint. They were similarly upset that the investigators prohibited recording interviews.

“I don’t get why they’re so insistent on that, it adds protection for everybody,” the graduate student said, noting she also found errors in the notes taken by investigators.

Kipnis offered a more succinct remark about the control against transparency by investigators: “Secrecy invites abuses.”

“Northwestern University is firmly committed both to academic freedom and to free speech, but it is also required to investigate and respond to allegations made by complainants that particular actions or statements might violate Title IX,” Alan Cubbage, vice president for university relations, said in a statement. “Northwestern is confident that its policies and procedures comport with the law and that they were followed here.”

As for grad students’ concerns that Kipnis’ alleged errors in her first essay would have a “chilling” effect, preventing other students from reporting assaults to Northwestern, neither side seems to find common ground.

Kipnis and Cohn questioned what would establish a preponderance of evidence that students have really been dissuaded from coming forward with future complaints.

Asked the grad student in response, “What reasonable person would want to report their assault if it meant a professor of their own university would take to the Chronicle of Higher Education to publicly misrepresent some of the most traumatizing events in your life?”

Rape Survivor: Working On A Sexual Assault Documentary Helped Me Heal

Ari Mostov says she was bitter that she felt pushed out of her “dream school” in 2013, after campus officials didn’t take her report of rape seriously.

Now, the 22-year-old is channeling her energy into “It Happened Here,” a documentary about campus rape — work she said makes her feel like she is making an impact and has also helped her heal.

Mostov filed a complaint in May 2013 against the University of Southern California that resulted in an ongoing federal investigation of the school. In the complaint, Mostov detailed that the university’s Department of Public Safety had told her she had not been raped because her assailant stopped and did not orgasm.

Records later obtained by The Huffington Post showed that the DPS had also labeled Mostov’s report as an “injury response” rather than rape, which she believes shows how the school kept sexual assault statistics low.

The increased scrutiny on USC began to subside in 2014. Some of the complainants graduated, while others said they became too stressed to continue speaking about their cases in public. Mostov was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder and clinical depression. She had found university employees’ responses to her report of an assault to exacerbate her mental anguish, so she left USC behind.

“I knew returning to school, it was going to be absolute hell again,” Mostov said, so she took time off to address the aftermath of her assault on her own terms.

Mostov was a film and screenwriting major at USC, and was able to find some short-term production work after leaving school. Then she was introduced to Marjorie Schwartz Nielsen in November 2014, who agreed to hire Mostov to help work on the “It Happened Here” release and subsequent campaign and promotions. The film debuted on the cable channel Pivot earlier this year and began being screened on college campuses in conjunction with the White House’s “It’s On Us” anti-sexual violence campaign. It will be released on iTunes and Google Play on May 12.

Working on the film, Mostov said, has been “one of the most amazing experiences” of her life.

“For the longest time I wasn’t able to think about what happened, I wasn’t able to grieve,” Mostov said. “Not being able to return to the school of my dreams and all of this hurt and pain I was putting off — I was finally able to put it to work.”

Nielsen said the survivors she has worked with and interviewed came forward for various reasons — that their assailant attacked someone else, that they felt their school’s atmosphere was getting worse, that they were tired of hearing stories similar to theirs — but what has kept them involved is a desire for “not letting the momentum die.”

“None of them pursued civil suits against their attackers,” she said. “They took up activism because they wanted it to change things.”

Neilsen said the social activism component is critical because to actually eliminate sexual violence, awareness isn’t enough — advocates need to address actual solutions.

At each screening, Neilsen said she explains campaigns some colleges have hosted on their campuses to inspire copy-cat demonstrations, and asks students in attendance to take the White House’s “It’s On Us” pledge.

The “It Happened Here” team has had more than 130 screening requests for the film, including some from organizations in France, Canada and Bangladesh. It’s stretching beyond college campuses, getting screened at several California high schools. On March 30, Mostov and Neilsen spoke about sexual assault at a TEDxYouth event in San Diego. Over the summer, the team will plan for more screenings at schools in the fall. They said they are particularly hoping to get more high school students to see the film, so they can start engaging young people before they arrive at college.

“This affects everyone, and really, in order to stop the cycle, we need to get ahead of these behaviors,” Mostov said. She envisions a day when asking for consent is as routine as asking for a condom.

“We’re really hoping to help to teach people, especially the younger generation, that they have a right to advocate for themselves,” she added. “It’s personally something I really struggled with because I didn’t know.”

Mostov wants to send the message that “I am brave.”

“I am doing this, this happened to me and I’m not going to be silent about it,” she explained. “My story matters too. This is what happened. I don’t care if you don’t believe me, I don’t care. This is what happened to me.”

Protecting Your Children From Sexual Predators

Protecting Your Children From Sexual Predators

Predators are everywhere and they can strike at any time- and they come in all shapes and sizes. More than 1.2 million families will report child sexual abuse by the end of this year. Research suggests that many hundreds of thousands more boys and girls from all backgrounds and of all ages may experience abuse that is not reported. To keep your family from becoming part of these frightening statistics, you must read this invaluable book. Protecting Your Children from Sexual Predators details everything you need to know and everything you need to do to keep your child safe. You will learn how to identify potential sexual predators, how to recognize the signs of the grooming behaviors that come before the actual act of sexual abuse, and how to arm your children with the necessary skills to prevent abuse. Sexual predators commit the most heinous acts against the more defenseless members of our society. They often are disguised as harmless and caring people; they may interact with your children as their baby-sitters, youth group leaders, clergy, teachers, coaches, neighbors, medical professionals, and family members. What these predators hold in common is their ability to earn the trust of both the children they attack and their parents. In Protecting Your Children from Sexual Predators, Dr. Leigh Baker gives you the unique opportunity to meet these predators up close and to examine:* The ten most common characteristics they display, such as refusal to take responsibility for their actions, sense of entitlement, and the need for power and control* How they lead their victims through the five stages of sexual abuse* The four types of personalities they commonly exhibit* How female sexual predators can gain access to your child* The ways that juveniles offend against other children* How sexual predators travel the Internet and the many ways that they can harm your child through cyberspace* How baby-sitting can pose a danger to your child if you don’t take the necessa

Sexual Harassment At Comic-Con Leads To Call For New Convention Policy

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Amid the costumes and fantasy of this weekend’s Comic-Con convention, a group of young women drew widespread attention to a very real issue — allegations of sexual harassment at the annual pop-culture festival.

Geeks for CONsent, founded by three women from Philadelphia, gathered nearly 2,600 signatures on an online petition supporting a formal anti-harassment policy at Comic-Con. Conventioneers told Geeks for CONsent they had been groped, followed and unwillingly photographed during the four-day confab.

Meanwhile, what Geeks for CONsent and others regarded as blatant objectification continued on the convention floor. Scantily clad women were still used as decoration for some presentations, and costumed women were described as “vaguely slutty” by panel moderator Craig Ferguson. When Dwayne Johnson made a surprise appearance to promote “Hercules,” 10 women in belly-baring outfits stood silently in front of the stage for no apparent reason.

Groping, cat-calling and other forms of sexual harassment are a larger social issue, not just a Comic-Con problem. And many comics and movies still portray women as damsels in distress. But Geeks for CONsent says things are amplified at the festival, where fantasy plays such a large role.

“It’s a separate, more specific issue within the convention space,” said Rochelle Keyhan, 29, director of Geeks for CONsent. “It’s very much connected (to the larger problem) and it’s the same phenomena, but manifesting a little more sexually vulgar in the comic space.”

“Comic-Con has an explicit Code of Conduct that addresses harassing and offensive behavior,” said Comic-Con International in a statement on Sunday to The Associated Press. “This Code of Conduct is made available online as well as on page two of the Events Guide that is given to each attendee.”

Earlier, Comic-Con spokesman David Glanzer told the Los Angeles Times that “anyone being made to feel uncomfortable at our show is obviously a concern for us.” He said additional security was in place this year, including an increased presence by San Diego Police.

Keyhan’s focus on Comic-Con began with a movement launched in her hometown called HollabackPhilly, to help end public harassment against women and members of the LGBT community. She and her colleagues developed a comic book on the subject in hopes of engaging middle- and high-school students, which is what brought them to Comic-Con.

Costuming, or cosplay, is a big part of the popular convention, with male and female fans dressing as their favorite characters, regardless of gender. A man might wear a Wonder Woman outfit, and a woman could dress as Wolverine. Keyhan and her colleagues — all in costume — carried signs and passed out temporary tattoos during the convention that read, “Cosplay does not equal consent.”

In addition to the existing Comic-Con’s Code of Conduct, Geeks for CONsent wants the 45-year-old convention to adopt a clearly stated policy and says staff members should to be trained to handle sexual harassment complaints.

“It makes it feel safer for the person being harassed to report it and also for bystanders who witness (inappropriate behavior),” Keyhan said.

Toni Darling, a 24-year-old model who was dressed as Wonder Woman on Saturday, said the issue goes way beyond Comic-Con.

“I don’t think it has anything to do with cosplay or anything to do with costumes,” she said. “People who are the kind of people who are going to take a photo of you when you’re not looking from behind are going to do that regardless, whether you’re in costume or not.”

Still, she’d like to see an advisory in the Comic-Con program against surreptitious photography, and a clearer statement from Geeks for CONsent. She found some fans were afraid to take photos, even when she was posing at a booth on the showroom floor.

“The kind of behavior that needs to be modified,” she said, “is somebody taking a photo of you bent over while you’re signing a print.”

Jimmy Savile Sexual Abuse Scandal: 500 People Reported Incidents By Late Entertainer, Children’s Charity Claims

LONDON (AP) — A British children’s charity says at least 500 people have reported abuse by the late entertainer Jimmy Savile, with the youngest alleged victim just 2 years old.

The National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children said Monday that the most common age group for victims was 13 to 15. Peter Watt, the charity’s director of child protection, said Savile was a “prolific sex offender … (who) lost no opportunity to identify vulnerable victims and abuse them.”

The cigar-chomping, platinum-haired Savile was a British television fixture for several decades, but after his death at 84 in 2011, witnesses and victims came forward to accuse him of sexual abuse. Police have since described the television and radio presenter as a serial sexual predator who used his fame to target young and mostly female victims, from star-struck teens at television recordings to patients in hospital beds.

A police investigation concluded last year that Savile’s abuse spanned half a century and included at least 214 offenses, most against victims under 18.

The NSPCC researched Savile’s crimes as part of a BBC documentary to be aired Monday.

It found more alleged victims than previously thought at Broadmoor psychiatric hospital. Police say they have received 16 allegations of abuse inside the institution.

Savile visited frequently as part of his charity work and was given his own set of keys to the hospital. In 1988, he was hired as an adviser to help resolve staff-management tensions at Broadmoor.
