Target Shines a Spotlight on Fashion Tech

SYDNEY — Target Corp. is partnering with American fashion tech developer Anina “Net” Trepte on a “Future Jewelry” event at its Internet of Things concept store Target Open House in San Francisco.
On July 26, Trepte, the founder and chief executive officer of 360 Fashion Network, will stage a wearable-tech fashion show and panel discussion within the store.
According to a Target rep, the event is the first that Target has hosted in partnership with a vendor specifically about smart jewellery.
It coincides with the unveiling of a small range of Trepte’s products inside the store’s “Garage” area — an incubator space where early stage tech products are selected for hands-on testing, with the potential to subsequently roll out into wider retail.
To be displayed over August, the products include the new 360Fash Tech “Totwoo Love” Kit, a plug-and-play jewelry-maker kit that Trepte developed with Beijing-based smart jewelry company Totwoo, which allows fashion and jewelry designers to create smart jewelry without the need to code or solder; Totwoo’s new Love Bloom smart pendant; and 360Fashion Network’s new charging wallet and smart safety ring.
The Target rep declined to comment on any retail plans that Target has for the products.

Kate Beckinsale Shines at Piaget Pre-Oscar Party in Hollywood Hills

Seems like there are a lot of 10-year anniversaries during Oscar Week this year. Essence celebrated a decade of its Black Women in Hollywood event on Thursday, Women in Film toasted the same miletone for its Oscar nominees party on Friday, and Swiss watch and jewelry maker Piaget is also celebrating its 10th year of Oscar weekend initiatives.
Since 2007, Piaget has been presenting sponsor for the Film Independent Spirit Awards, the show honoring indie films and actors, which takes place the day before the Oscars on the beach in Santa Monica. This year, the company also threw a lavish cocktail bash in a private home in the Hollywood Hills to showcase some of its high jewelry pieces created for the Oscars red carpet.
Piaget ambassador Jessica Chastain was to be the party’s guest of honor, but at the last minute was unable to make it to town. Luckily, event cohost The Weinstein Company had also invited its talent roster, which included Kate Beckinsale and young “Lion” star Sunny Pawar. Saroo Brierley, the real-life inspiration for the film, as well as actors Sam Heughan, Billy Brown, Paz Vega and director John Singleton.

Natalie Portman Shines in Sequins at UCLA Nazarian Center 5th Anniversary Dinner

Natalie Portman – Photo credit: Vince Bucci

Dressed in a sequined Christian Dior mini dress, Oscar-winning actress Natalie Portman took the stage at The Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts in Beverly Hills, CA to present Israeli author Amos Oz with the UCLA Israel Studies Award.

Oz is the author of over 41 books, which have been translated into 42 languages. His International bestselling memoir, A Tale of Love and Darkness has been adapted by Portman who will play the role of Oz’s mother Fania. Portman will also be making her directorial debut in this screenplay. The film is slated to premiere at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival.

“As both an Israeli and an American, I understand well the importance that Israel is,” said Portman. “His beautiful and moving memoir, A Tale of Love and Darkness, which I am so proud to bring to the screen, weaves his own life with a history of a young state of Israel. The two are linked. Thank you Amos for packing your suitcases for this long Jewish travel, putting words to our longings and for never losing to cynicism and your insistence on peace, even when it is not as popular as it should be.”

The award presented to Oz is a sculpture created by Soraya Nazarian, an internationally renowned artist and sculptor, and is entitled Strong Roots, Grounded. The tree’s strong roots portray identity, origin and strength to weather difficulty and the unknown.

Following the awards ceremony, an elegant dinner was held on the patio catered by Lucques.

Being a maid wasn’t all bad. At least it wasn’t shooting insurgents and dodging bullets. Sure, there were some real skanky people out there who left the room in a way he wouldn’t even see in his worst nightmare, but he was happy with his job. It was something mindless that paid the bills. When he went home, he didn’t have to worry about explosions or how close to the enemy line he was. He had a beer or two and relaxed before bed only to start it all over again. It was nice to be back in Atlanta. It had been years, but it was still home. The Meliá Hotel was a nice place and they treated their employees right. All he had to do was be on time and do his job. He could handle that in his sleep. So what if he was a bit lonely? That was life. He’d spent the last thirty years with no significant other—he could last the rest of his life. Maybe he’d go out to eat at his favourite restaurant, Escorpion, after work. The tequila was great and so was the food. Mexican was his favourite. Kasey Adams. Just the name made Quinn hard. Fuck. Nope, no matter how much he wanted a goat taco it wasn’t going to happen. Kasey worked as a waiter at Escorpion. They’d met there one night and had really hit it off, but Kase was just too happy and shiny. Quinn was trying to avoid Kasey, not invite him back to his place for a fuck. Because if he saw Kasey, that invitation would be out of his mouth before he could think twice. Kasey was a sexy bastard and if Quinn laid eyes on him he wouldn’t hesitate to ask him over. Kasey still thought he could fix the world. He’d once told Quinn that ‘everything is a path that leads us to where we need to go’. If that wasn’t glass half full, Quinn didn’t know what was. He was too old, too tired and the shine had worn off him at nineteen when he’d shot his first person in Afghanist

The Roger Ebert Documentary ‘Life Itself’ Shines At Sundance

As I write this fourth update, I have now seen 15 movies at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. (I should add: I am very, very tired.) I’ve been sitting at my computer for the last 10 minutes trying to think of some fun anecdote to share, but, honestly, I can’t remember much of anything right now, so let’s just get to the movies. Movies that include one of the most special films at the festival, the Roger Ebert documentary, “Life Itself.”

“Life Itself”

life itself

“Life Itself,” a title that was taken from Roger Ebert’s autobiography, chronicles the life of the famed film critic – including the last few months of Ebert’s life in, at times, ghastly detail. It’s heartbreaking to see Ebert in such poor shape for those last few months, especially contrasted with the guy who used to be so full of life. But even in those final months, Ebert’s writing was still very much full of life.

I don’t want to paint “Life Itself” as a sad film. There’s a sequence where outtakes are shown of Ebert and Gene Siskel filming a television promo that are downright hilarious. Thankfully, a lot of time is spent on Siskel (who died in 1999) and the strange relationship the two shared. It was Siskel’s insistence on hiding the severity of his condition from Ebert -– Ebert had been hurt that he wasn’t in Siskel’s inner circle concerning his condition — that led Ebert to be as open as possible about his future medical conditions.

It’s a shame Ebert didn’t live to see this film released, but in an interview conducted for the film, he was fairly sure that he would never live to see the finished film. “Life Itself” will take you through the emotional gauntlet. No, Ebert wasn’t a saint and this documentary doesn’t sugarcoat that fact. But it does give us a look at this man who lived an extraordinary life and inspired so many. “Life Itself” is one of the best films at Sundance.

When “Laggies” begins, it almost feels like a distant cousin to “Bridesmaids.” (Note: I am in no way comparing “Laggies” to “Bridesmaids,” just the first ten minutes.) There are some laughs! I laughed a few times! Keira Knightly plays Megan, a woman with an advanced degree, yet who is content doing not much of anything with her career. After her best friend’s wedding, during which her boyfriend (Mark Webber) unsuccessfully tries to propose, she’s asked by a high school student, Annika (Chloë Grace Moretz), to buy Annika and her other underage friends some alcohol. Megan agrees, then moves in with Annika and falls in love with Annika’s dad (Sam Rockwell). Yes, the plot of this movie is as dumb as that sounds.

Again, there are some legitimately funny scenes, but “Laggies” suffers from way too many “Nobody in real life would ever make the decisions that these characters do” moments. Annika, a stranger, calls Megan and asks Megan to pose as her mother for a meeting at the principal’s office. With no hesitation, Megan agrees. Nobody would ever agree to that! Who are these people? You know what? Never mind, I don’t want to know.

“To Be Takei”

to be takei

I had no idea that George Takei had worked with John Wayne. “To Be Takei” is filled with enough footage and fun facts like that one to satisfy the weary popular culture connoisseur – and, yes, there’s a lot of “Star Trek” – but the film focuses mostly on Takei’s extraordinary post-“Trek” life, in which he’s become one of the leading voices in the LGBT movement.

If you’ve paid attention to Takei’s life, I’m not sure there’s a lot here that someone wouldn’t know – Takei has discussed his unfortunate time in a Japanese internment camp during World War II many times in the past – but Takei just emits joy. It’s impossible to watch Takei speak and not feel some sort of happiness. The film is sprinkled with interviews with the rest of the living “Star Trek” cast, including William Shatner who, honestly, comes off as an asshole. (I can see why when Takei told Shatner to “get off your high horse” at a celebrity roast, he states he wasn’t joking.)

Regardless, Takei has lived a fascinating life and makes for a great case study, even if you don’t know the difference between a Klingon and a Romulan.
