Tamera Mowry Says Woman Who Called Cops on Black Man Babysitting White Kids Should Be Arrested

Tamera Mowry wants consequences for the woman who called the police on a black man babysitting white kids.

“I hope this woman was arrested for harassment,” Mowry, 40, said Wednesday on The Real. “She followed him for an hour! I would have cursed that woman out. I don’t like entitlement and I don’t like prejudice.”

Georgia man Corey Lewis was stopped by police for “babysitting while black” over the weekend, sparking nationwide outrage. Lewis recorded the encounter on Facebook Live when he noticed that a strange woman was following him.

“We then left to go get gas across the street,” Lewis told CBS46. “She moved closer to the gas station and waited there.”

The woman eventually called the police, and Lewis’ footage shows a Cobb County officer questioning the children. The parents were in disbelief.

“I said, ‘Are you saying that because there’s an African American male driving my two white kids, that he was stopped and pulled over and questioned?’ and he said, ‘I’m sorry ma’am, that’s exactly what I’m saying,” the mother told the TV station.

“This is what happens when you don’t have black friends,” Loni Love said on The Real while introducing the segment.

“I have to say this because we’re on The Real,”Mowry said. “If it was the opposite, we all know that this would have never happened. They would have been like, “Oh look how cute! They adopted some black kids!”

All four panelists agreed that there should be consequences when people call the police for “dumb stuff.”

Love added, “We can’t go to a barbecue, we can’t sell lemonade, what the hell are we supposed to do? We are Americans, we pay taxes, we do our thing — leave us alone and let us live our life!”

Rebecca Taylor, Goop and The Glow Host Event Supporting She Should Run

STEPPING UP TO THE PLATE: Rebecca Taylor thinks America would be a different place if more women were in elected office.
The designer hosted a gathering Thursday afternoon in honor of International Women’s Day along with Jean Godfrey June of Goop and Violet Gaynor of The Glow at La Mercerie, the café, bakery and restaurant in the furniture and design store Roman and Williams Guild. The event supported She Should Run, a nonpartisan organization whose mission is to expand the talent pool of women running for office in the U.S.
“I’m very passionate about where politics are at the moment in America,” said Taylor, cofounder and chief creative officer of Rebecca Taylor. “I know so many women who would make contributions to politics. America would be a different place if you had more women in charge.
“I’m from New Zealand and we were the first country to give women the right to vote. We have a 37-year-old female prime minister,” she added.
Jean Godfrey June, beauty director of Goop — which sells Rebecca Taylor La Vie on its site — explained why they decided to support this event. “The brands are very aligned. The cause is what drew us to it. It’s an incredible

Their goal is to have 250,000 women running for elected office by 2030. Rebecca Taylor will be donating 10 percent of all product proceeds from her online store on Thursday to She Should Run.
“Supporting and celebrating women is something I’ve always been passionate about. Now more than ever, it’s so important that we continue to empower women and celebrate each other’s accomplishments,” said Taylor, cofounder and chief creative officer of Rebecca Taylor.
Explaining why the company decided to support the She Should Run organization, Taylor said, “We stand behind their mission to provide a network for women leaders looking to run for elected office and their belief that our society will benefit from different perspectives and experiences that women bring to leadership. Christian Siriano Thinks ‘Fashion Designers Should Still Be Celebrated’ on the Red Carpet

Actresses in Hollywood have been making a powerful statement against sexual harassment on the red carpet this awards season in support of the Time’s Up movement. Stars stood together at the Golden Globe Awards by wearing all black and musicians joined in at the Grammy Awards by pinning white roses to their outfits. Supporting from behind the scenes? Stylists and designers who work tirelessly to pull together powerful looks for their clients, like Christian Siriano.

Siriano dressed 11 women at the Golden Globes and three at the Screen Actors Guild Awards so far this season, and he’s proud to align himself with the movement. He also hopes the creative process behind getting “red carpet ready” will continued to be honored.

“I’m glad all these powerful women are coming together and it’s time that their voice is heard,” Siriano told PeopleStyle at the launch of his new E.L.F. Cosmetics collection. “ fashion is still very important. Fashion designers should still be celebrated.”

Siriano pointed out that the red carpet is about “celebrating creativity and art” as a whole.

“It’s not just about showcasing the actors. The designers are being showcased. The hair and makeup teams are being showcased. We’re all in the industry together,” Siriano told us. “Actually, none of us can survive without the other, which I think sometimes people forget.”

Looking for more style content? Click here to subscribe to the PeopleStyle Newsletter for amazing shopping discounts, can’t-live-without beauty products and more.

He continued, “Wearing a beautiful dress is a privilege too because without that, there would be no red carpet to go on. It’s a balance about supporting all of each other, so I hope to see that more.”

Siriano called the all-black movement at the Golden Globes “pretty great,” but wasn’t afraid to admit it created quite the challenge for him as a designer dressing 11 different women for the event. “It’s been hard,” he laughed. “It’s been a really rough one.”

To donate to the Time’s Up Legal Defense Fund, which will provide subsidized legal support to women and men in all industries who have experienced sexual harassment, assault or abuse in the workplace, visit its GoFundMe page. “I remember we were doing a velvet gown and somebody asked for a velvet gown. I was like, ‘Oh, I already did a velvet gown, but what if she doesn’t wear it?’ It was crazy and a juggle of everything, but it all worked out. Everybody looked really powerful and amazing,” Siriano said.

To communicate empowerment through each look he designed, Siriano made sure each woman felt like herself when she put on the clothing.

“Debra was killing it. She was like, ‘No, I don’t want to wear a frilly dress, which everybody thinks I’m going to wear,’” he told us. “She told me, ‘I want to wear a pant and something cool and powerful.’ So that was fun.”

TWD: Why Abraham Should Have Been the Crossover Character

Warning: Spoilers for The Walking Dead/Fear the Walking Dead follow…

AMC’s Talking Dead recenly revealed that Lennie James’ Morgan would be the connective tissue, the crossover character, between The Walking Dead and Fear the Walking Dead.

There’s been plenty of speculation since it was announced at SDCC that there would be, in fact, a crossover between the two shows (despite Fear the Walking Dead, from a time standpoint, taking place in the past) on how the shows would connect, especially since creator Robert Kirkman confirmed at NYCC that the crossover would come via a specific character.

Bridget Foley’s Diary: When Should Ivanka Cry Uncle Over Dad?

Before the presidential campaign and election, Ivanka Trump self-identified and was perceived as a businesswoman passionate about women’s empowerment. You’d have been hard-pressed to hear someone speak negatively about her, with words such as lovely, hard-working, self-directed and genuine typical descriptives.

And then, Dad ran for president and won.

Throughout and after the election, and especially since her role in the Trump administration shifted from merely “daughter,” as she said she initially intended, to G-20 Summit-attending formal adviser, Ivanka has taken her hits, critics questioning not only her qualifications but also her motives and her silence in light of various presidential outbursts. Following President Trump’s shocking equal assignation last weekend of “blame on both sides” when white supremacists, many brandishing swastikas, stormed Charlottesville, Va., to protest the planned removal of a statue of Robert E. Lee, the criticism escalated exponentially, with many wondering, how could Ivanka not speak out?

Whether or not she knew just what she was getting into in accepting her White House role, surely Ivanka knows her father, and she is accustomed to life in shared spotlights, his and her own. Though thrust into the former as a child when her parents’ public marital woes made for tabloid grist, she chose the latter early on. London Mayor Says U.K. Should Not ‘Roll Out Red Carpet’ for Donald Trump on State Visit

When – and if – President Donald Trump‘s state visit to the U.K. happens, don’t expect much fanfare from London Mayor Sadiq Kahn.

Kahn, who has gone head-to-head with the president before, told CNN in a new interview, “State visits are different from a normal visit, and at a time when the President of the U.S.A. has policies that many in our country disagree with, I am not sure it is appropriate for our government to roll out the red carpet.”

In January, U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May conveyed to Trump an invitation from Queen Elizabeth to visit Britain, which he accepted.

Shortly after, however, an online petition calling a potential Trump visit an “embarrassment” to the host nation garnered more than 1.8 million signatures. Last month, the Queen didn’t mention Trump’s planned trip to the U.K. during her speech at the opening of Parliament.

At the time, Trump administration and Downing Street officials respectively denied that the trip had been canceled, saying instead that an exact date had just not yet been scheduled.

Last week, however, the White House confirmed that Trump’s state visit to the United Kingdom had been delayed until 2018. They gave no reason for the postponement.

A source recently told U.K. outlet The Sun that Trump was concerned about the reception he’d receive, and allegedly asked Prime Minister Theresa May to ensure her countrymen and women were cordial.

President Trump and Khan have clashed in recent months, with the president lashing out at Khan just hours after the London Bridge terror attack in June: “We must stop being politically correct and get down to the business of security for our people. If we don’t get smart it will only get worse,” Trump tweeted at the time.

RELATED VIDEO: London’s Mayor Suggests Canceling President Trump’s State Visit After His Criticisms on Twitter

He added, “At least seven dead and 48 wounded in terror attack and Mayor of London says there is ‘no reason to be alarmed’ !”

Trump was responding to an interview Khan did with the BBC regarding the police action being taken after the attack, during which he said, “Londoners will see an increased police presence today and over the course of the next few days. There’s no reason to be alarmed.”

In response, Khan’s aide said in a statement that the mayor had “more important things to do” than comment on Trump’s tweets. Trump, however, doubled down on his insult, writing on social media, “Pathetic excuse by London Mayor Sadiq Khan who had to think fast on his ‘no reason to be alarmed’ statement.”

RELATED VIDEO: Exclusive: Natasha Stoynoff Speaks Out: ‘I Don’t Want Women to Feel Afraid’

Further speaking about Trump to CNN this week, Khan also said, “If you somehow think it is not possible to be a Muslim and a proud westerner I am happy to disabuse you of that idea, whether you are a reporter for CNN or Donald Trump.”

The Queen traditionally issues an invite for a state visit to the sitting U.S. president once during their four or eight-year term. She has met with every American president since she assumed the throne in 1952 — except for Lyndon B. Johnson.

While presidents sometimes make multiple visits to the U.K. for official state business, a state visit hosted by the Queen usually includes a stay at Windsor Castle and a dinner attended by members of the royal family.

Carrie Fisher’s Death Should Be A Wakeup Call To People With Sleep Apnea

Carrie Fisher died from sleep apnea among other health issues, according to a recent statement from the Los Angeles coroner’s office. The “Star Wars” actress also had traces of several drugs, including cocaine, in her system.

Though her drug use has grabbed headlines, the coroner’s report is focused on the role of the common sleep disorder, which affects more than 18 million Americans.

Obstructive sleep apnea, the clinical term, is a health condition that causes breathing to be interrupted during sleep and can disrupt rest throughout the night. The most common sign of the condition is chronic snoring.

Sleep apnea is serious: It raises the risk of dying early by 46 percent, according to a 2009 study. Sleep apnea also increases the chances of sudden cardiac death, a condition that kills approximately 450,000 Americans every year.

Primary care doctors typically don’t inquire about sleep apnea during regular checkups, according to Dr. Douglas Kirsch, medical director at the Carolinas HealthCare Sleep Medicine and president-elect of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. But it’s certainly something that shouldn’t be ignored.

“While it’s generally considered a chronic medical condition that people have for many years, there are some night-to-night risks for a major medical problem,” Kirsch told HuffPost.

How sleep apnea can hurt your heart

The condition on its own can lead to severe health complications. Sleep apnea can cause hypertension, heart conditions and mental health issues like depression. It’s undetermined whether or not Fisher, who died late last year at the age of 60, was getting medical help for the issue.

The disorder occurs when a person’s airway becomes obstructed. This could happen for a number of reasons, including structural issues like oversized tonsils or an issue where the tongue and throat muscles relax and block the windpipe. Being overweight can also increase a person’s risk for developing the disorder.

A blocked airway is essentially what leads to the disrupted breathing that occurs with the condition. When breathing is delayed, it causes oxygen levels in the blood to decrease. This drop essentially puts pressure on the cardiovascular system, which makes the heart work harder in order to keep everything in check.

This process is what ultimately contributes to a higher risk of high blood pressure and heart issues for people with sleep apnea, according to the American Sleep Association. The condition can also lead to irregular heartbeats.

If left untreated, sleep apnea puts a person at greater risk for heart attack and stroke.

The deadly relationship between drug use and sleep disorders

It’s important to note that the coroner listed the cause of her death as “undetermined” and there’s no proven link between the drug use and sleep apnea in the case of Fisher’s death. But experts say substances like alcohol and medications can make the condition worse.

Research has also found that sleep disturbances and addiction may be linked. Those with substance use disorders may be more likely to develop sleep disorders, according to a small 2009 study. Separate research has found a link between chronic opioid use and sleep apnea, indicating the use of those substances may induce disordered breathing while asleep.

What to do if you suspect you have the condition

Because the common symptom of sleep apnea ― snoring ― can also be a harmless sleep problem, many people don’t often think to get checked for the issue. Aside from snoring, Kirsch recommends looking out for daytime sleepiness or waking up in the middle of the night as indicators that you might have the condition. Morning headaches can also be a sign.

Fortunately, there are ways to fix sleep apnea. Some doctors may recommend doing a sleep study, where physicians will examine factors like your heart rate, airflow and blood oxygen levels while you rest to determine whether or not the condition is present. Medical professionals may also determine if you need a continuous positive airway pressure device (more commonly known as a CPAP), which is a mask that helps keep the airway open during sleep.

Some other methods in managing sleep apnea include possible dental procedures or a surgical procedure to fix the issue that may be causing a blocked airway. Lifestyle changes like weight management through diet and exercise and cutting back on alcohol can also help control the disorder’s severity.

“Patients will delay testing because they are worried about the treatment options for [sleep apnea],” Kirsch said. “That’s like not getting your blood pressure checked because you are worried about treating high blood pressure, it doesn’t make sense … I have many, many patients, who after starting treatment, bemoan the fact that they had delayed for so long because they feel so much better. “

As with all medical issues, the best course of action is to start by talking to your doctor.

“If you have a concern about your sleep, speak to your primary care physician about it, and if they are unable to help, seek help from a board-certified sleep physician,” Kirsch stressed.

We Are Not Hysterical: 18 Strong Female Voices You Should Read

For every positive attribute a woman may possess ― strength, persistence, decisiveness ― there seems to be a popularly used synonym that casts the same quality in a negative light. Women who lead may be painted as curt, loud or cold ― or, worst of all, hysterical.

To combat this message, the staff at New York City’s Strand Book Store compiled a list of strong female voices who, like Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.), refuse to be silenced.

Writes Strand: “On the heels of yet another female U.S. Senator being told to more or less ‘calm down’ while passionately doing the job she was elected to do, we are again wondering this: why are outspoken women so quickly accused of being hysterical? Being unapologetically loud and standing firm on your values are viewed very differently among genders, and when this perceived ‘hysteria’ halts progress, we have a problem.”

Below are 10 titles by women with strong, clear voices, as selected by Strand Book Store:

Mother of All Questions by Rebecca Solnit

In a tone that is incisive, challenging and more than a little disturbing, Solnit speaks volumes on women who refuse to be silent, the gender binary, and so much more. She is fearless in addressing misogyny, the casualness of rape jokes in contemporary comedy, and the need for men to join the third wave. Reassuring and honest, this essay collection embraces modern day feminism and voices that celebrate it. Looking for more leadership? Check out Solnit’s Men Explain Things to Me, or as we consider it, the bible of “mansplaining.”

I Am Malala by Malala Yousafzai

When we grow up, we want to be like Malala. With a strength that many will (thankfully) never need to channel, Malala offers forgiveness to the members of the Taliban that shot her in the head at just 15 years old in Pakistan. Her miraculous recovery can only be overshadowed by her determination to voice the need for girls’ education in a world of suppression. Through education, these girls can pursue the lives they dream of and the independence they may only read about. With her own education and determination, Malala is the youngest recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize for her efforts.

My Beloved World by Sonia Sotomayor

Another example of strong women in our government, Sonia Sotomayor was the first Hispanic and third woman appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court. As many stellar female role models, Sotomayor learned early in life to depend on herself if she wanted to succeed. She was inspired by television characters in her career choice, and her sheer determination ensured that she became a lawyer and earned a degree at Yale Law School. Her memoir inspires us to take further steps to see women in every role of federal government.

A Woman Looking at Men Looking at Women by Siri Hustvedt

A beautiful collection of essays from novelist and feminist Siri Hustvedt, author of The Blazing World and What I Loved. In the first of three sections, Hustvedt investigates how gender biases affect our perception of the world in a most timely fashion. Her feminist perspective is combined with elegant writing as she draws connections between the oft incompatible humanities and the sciences.

Plenty Ladylike by Claire McCaskill

A wonderful story that is pro-feminine ambition, Plenty Ladylike explores the life of a woman who has faced it all. Paying her way through law school as a waitress (a trying job on its own), McCaskill has faced and overcome opposition her entire career. When seeking support on her way to the Missouri House of Representatives, voters would suggest she just go get married instead. Once she was elected, secret meetings were held by fellow politicians to block her efforts. When given every opportunity to give up, she refused, and that persistence definitely makes us a fan.

No Is Not Enough: Resisting Trump’s Shock Politics and Winning the World We Need by Naomi Klein

The title alone reminds us that now is not a time to be timid and quiet. Klein’s new release offers real action and strategy for countering the surreal world of politics currently dominating the U.S. She also draws a strong correlation for readers between shock politics and climate change based on two decades of extensive research. A great read on in-depth information of the current administration and how to continue the resistance.

Too Fat, Too Slutty, Too Loud: The Rise and Reign of The Unruly Woman by Anne Helen Petersen

Turn brazen into a compliment with this soon-to-be-released fireball by Buzzfeed culture writer Anne Helen Petersen. Inside, she examines pop icons who are known for their unruly attitudes (think Lena Dunham or Nicki Minaj) and tops us off with a no-nonsense analysis of why this has become a make it or break it point for today’s celebrities. Plus, you can meet Anne Helen Petersen in person at Strand for the book’s release on June 20th.

Hunger: A Memoir of [My] Body by Roxane Gay

Freshly released and on the coattails of her heartbreaking collection of short stories, Difficult Women, Roxane Gay has captured us again with the new memoir, Hunger. In it, with bravery and honesty that is raw as it is resilient, Gay catalogs a lifetime with being at odds with her own body. In a society where being bigger can actually make you invisible, this book provides a voice to an underrepresented population of women here and around the world.

Whipping Girl: A Transsexual Woman on Sexism and the Scapegoating of Femininity by Julia Serano

As an activist, professional biologist, and transsexual woman, Julia Serano provides a unique perspective on gender, tying together the social and science perspectives in one well-crafted book. She hits hard on the theme of femininity, emphasizing our predisposition to equate it with weakness and passiveness, and she explores where this theme stems from. Sex Object: A Memoir by Jessica Valenti

A New York Times bestseller, Sex Object is praised as “an antidote to the fun and flirty feminism of selfies and self-help” by New Republic. Valenti is unabashed in nailing down the ways that sexism affects all areas of our lives. Using the her young adult life in NYC as a foundation, the personal becomes political in a memoir that is less about storytelling and more about a society that still puts women in second place.

8 Things Every Broadway Fan Should Watch, Read Or See Before The Tonys

Still deciding whether to forego rent this month and see Bette Midler in “Hello, Dolly!”? Is your obsession with Ben Platt starting to verge on unhealthy? Were you put on this earth to see Laura Linney and Cynthia Nixon swap roles every night in “The Little Foxes”?

Well, fear not, theater fans, because the Tony Awards are upon us, with host Kevin Spacey leading the festivities this year on CBS. The stars of stage and screen (alert: Cate Blanchett will be in attendance) will gather in New York City on Sunday night to celebrate the stellar year in theater.

This Broadway season took us everywhere, from working-class Pennsylvania in Lynn Nottage’s Pulitzer-Prize-winning play “Sweat” to inside the hearts of a fractured family facing the HIV/AIDS crisis in “Falsettos.” Also, though he may not be nominated, but now is a good time as ever to thank the theater gods for casting Jake Gyllenhaal in “Sunday in the Park with George.”

So whether you’re a diehard fan or just tuning into this whole Broadway thing, it’s time to do your homework and check out some theater #content from around the internet about the shows nominated this year.

And for those “Hamilton” fanatics, yes, the Tonys still happen when the musical isn’t nominated, but, rest assured, Lin-Manuel Miranda will be there.

“Dear Evan Hansen” (Best Musical)

From the minds of “La La Land” songwriters Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, “Dear Evan Hansen” has won over audiences (and Hollywood) thanks to a career-defining performance from Ben Platt and catchy ballads that tug at the heartstrings. Watch Platt and co-star Laura Dreyfuss’ performance on “Late Night with Seth Meyers” below.

“Sweat” (Best Play)

The early favorite to pick up the award for Best Play this Sunday, Pulitzer winner “Sweat” is the most politIcally relevant of the bunch, exploring the lives of factory workers in a small Pennsylvanian city. HuffPost recently interviewed playwright Lynn Nottage about what the play says about Trump’s America.

Nottage is also working on a companion piece titled “Floyd,” which will … twist … be a comedy.

“The Little Foxes” (Best Revival of a Play)

Laura Linney. Cynthia Nixon. Period piece. Need we say more? Set in a small town in Alabama circa 1900, both deliver tour de force performances and then switch roles on the subsequent night. They’re also close friends offstage, and brought the fun to “Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen” earlier this year.

“Falsettos” (Best Revival of a Musical)

We cried and then we cried some more. This musical revival about an imperfect family struggling to stay together in the wake of a divorce and a father’s coming out was a standout this season. The cast is slated to perform at the Tonys this Sunday, so read this comprehensive piece from BuzzFeed about why the show means so much to the LGBT community and how it’s more timely than ever.

“Hello, Dolly!” (Best Revival of a Musical)

As turn-of-the-century matchmaker Dolly Gallagher Levi, Bette Midler has been earning rave reviews for her long-awaited musical comeback to Broadway. The glorious cast album was recently released and, trust us, your ears will immediately thank you for this musical theater goodness.

Also, the movie adaptation starring Barbra Streisand is currently streaming on Netflix, so what’s the holdup?

“Jitney” (Best Revival of a Play)

From the mind of August Wilson, “Jitney” follows a group of drivers of unofficial and unlicensed taxi drivers ― called “jitneys” ―who transport residents of Pittsburgh Hill District in the 1970s because others refuse to do so. If you haven’t seen Wilson’s best known play “Fences,” the powerful film adaptation starring Viola Davis and Denzel Washington was released last year and also explores the experience and struggle of working class black Americans.

“Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812” (Best Musical)

This interactive musical needs to be seen to be believed and it’s far too complicated to explain (seriously, it’s adapted from a section of War & Peace), so check out the cast, including Josh Groban, performing two songs on the “Today Show.”

“The Present” (Cate Blanchett for Best Actress)

No one plays morally complex women like Cate Blanchett, and the Oscar winner is in fine form in this surprisingly modern adaptation of an unfinished Chekhov play. Directed by the actress’ husband Andrew Upton, the standout scene features a drunk Blanchett pouring vodka all over herself, as she dances on a dinner table. Watch his interview with the cast below, and for more vodka and Blanchett, check out “Blue Jasmine.”

The Tony Awards air at 8 p.m. June 11 on CBS.

What You Should Know If You Love Someone With High-Functioning Depression

Everything feels a lot harder when you’re dealing with high-functioning depression ― including relationships.

Experts say the condition often isn’t noticeable to most people, because those who experience it tend to mask it well. This arguably makes the disorder difficult for partners to detect and the people who deal with it hesitant to speak up in the first place.

The symptoms are aligned with those of depression, including irritability and extreme sadness. But the average observer wouldn’t necessarily know it based on how the sufferer is acting.

Luckily, knowledge is power. Education about mental health issues helps people who don’t experience them understand the disorders a little bit better. And in a world where only 25 percent of people with mental illness feel like others are sympathetic to their condition, compassion can go a long way.

We asked our Facebook communities to share some truths they wished their loved ones knew about high-functioning depression. Here’s what they had to say:

1. High-functioning depression zaps energy.

“I wish my fiancé understood that some days, I can’t turn my depression off. I can’t always just get out of bed immediately and take on the day like he does. I need to motivate and really push myself to do so, and it takes a great amount of effort.” ―Lindsey Diamond

2. Just because the condition is hard to see, doesn’t mean it isn’t there.

“I may seem happy and I am able to joke, but when I get home, the mask comes off and I cannot function beyond basic necessities … Everything is difficult.” ―Theresa Allen

3. Sometimes it stands in the way of social gatherings.

“[I want them to] stop demanding that I attend every party with them because they need to know I want some time alone.” ―Samra Suleman

4. Other times it helps to stay distracted.

“For me, it is having to be busy at all times. The point is to mentally exhaust myself so the bad thoughts don’t creep in as I lie in bed each night.” ―Katherine Deubner

5. The condition isn’t anyone’s fault.

“I wish he knew when I’m at my low points it’s no ones fault. Sometimes I’m just sad, sometimes I just need to lay in bed, sometimes I need him to do what I normally do around the house.” ―Sandra Ringle

6. There’s often no explanation for why it’s happening.

“I wish my partner knew that there is rarely (if ever) a specific ‘cause’ to my depressed states. I do not have a tangible answer to the question, ‘What’s wrong?’” ―Beranger LeFranc

7. It feels like an internal battle.

“Basically it’s like an argument between my heart and my brain. While I’m crying my heart out my brain thinks, ‘What the hell is wrong with you. Look at how great things are!’ And my heart says, ‘If you can’t figure it out, we’re going to die.’ That’s what it seems like when for no obvious reason I find myself in a total emotional meltdown.” ―Michael Aldieri

8. High-functioning depression is unintentionally isolating.

“I wish he knew that I don’t want to shut him out, I just don’t know how to let him in.” ―Liv Kerr

9. An affectionate gesture goes a long way.

“I just need to be held and then left alone for a while. What I’m feeling is as if I’m underwater and my lungs can’t get air.” ―Sandra Ringle

10. It’s hardly in a person’s control.

“I wish my partner understood how little control I really have over my depression. I can do every little thing correctly, eating right, taking care of myself, exercising daily, centering my mind with yoga and all it takes is one trigger to undo all that work.” ―Emily Maia

11. You’re not doing anything wrong.

“I wish he knew that even though he is the most amazing man I’ve ever met, there is a piece of me that is broken and it has nothing to do with him. He could make me smile every day, but as soon as that switch gets flipped I will have a really hard time being able to pump the brakes on my depression and anxiety.” ―Emily Thomas

12. Your support is so important.

“I wish he knew how overwhelming being sad during a depressive state is … sometimes it would be really nice to get a hug, instead of just the cold shoulder and being ignored because it is difficult to understand. Support is worth more than words could ever say.” ―Avarie Downs

The bottom line is this: Don’t give up on someone with high-functioning depression. Your love means everything.

Why You Should Always, Always Check Your Sunscreen’s Expiration Date

Picture me, age 14: Blond, blue-eyed and pasty-pale.

It was a scorching hot weekend in June, and I was on a three-day camping trip with my dad. As two fair-skinned, freckle-faced Caucasians, we diligently applied sunscreen — SPF 45 — each morning before emerging from our tent, and every couple of hours thereafter. Coppertone would have been proud.

Sunday evening on the way home, though, I felt red and hot. I could see the signs of sunburn emerging, and I felt tired and dizzy from too much time in the sun. When I awoke on Monday morning, my shoulders and upper back were covered in second-degree burns, oozing, pussy blisters screaming across my skin. Getting dressed was a non-starter — even the lightest, gentlest fabrics felt like daggers on my shoulders. I was a mess.

The problem? Our sunscreen was more than a year expired.

As sunscreen ages, its sun-protection ingredients degrade, reducing its effectiveness. Keeping a fresh bottle on hand, and using it every time you’re out in the sun, will keep you from getting sunburned — which can cause your skin to become dry, discolored, wrinkled and prone to bruising over time — and also help prevent skin cancer, the most common cancer of all.

Thanks to that painfully unforgettable experience, I’ve become relentless in my sunscreen advocacy crusade. You won’t find me preaching about wearing a high SPF — any broad-spectrum sunblock over SPF 15 will do — but you will hear me insist that you check the expiration dates on your sunscreen bottles. I wouldn’t wish the (highly preventable!) burns I experienced on anyone.

The good news is the Food and Drug Administration requires companies to print expiration dates on sunblock, since it’s classified as an over-the-counter drug. And while dermatologists often say that a bottle of sunscreen, usually around 6 ounces, should last only about a week with daily, full-body use, we all know that’s not how the average person uses it. We buy a bottle at the beginning of summer and leave it in the car, or forget it at the beach, or tuck it under the bathroom sink, using it again the next summer (or many summers later) after rediscovering it, never questioning its efficacy.

But now that you know sunscreen expires — with potentially disastrous results — you’ll surely remember to check your bottles.

If your sunblock doesn’t have an expiration date on the bottle for some reason, though, keep Dr. Shari Lipner’s advice in mind.

“Sunscreens are designed to last for three years,” says the assistant professor of dermatology at Cornell University’s Weill graduate school of medicine. “If your bottle does not have a date printed on it, write the date that you purchased it [on the bottle] and make sure to discard after three years.”

She also notes that storing your sunscreen in a hot car can degrade key ingredients, causing it to become less effective. “If the consistency seems off — runny or grainy,” she advises, “discard and buy a new sunscreen.”

And if you do end up with a sunburn this summer, don’t freak out. There are ways to treat it and reduce its more insufferable side effects. First, says Lipner, get out of the sun as soon as possible. Then, take a cool shower or bath, and apply cool compresses to any burned or red areas for 10-15 minutes, four times a day.

“Aloe vera and moisturizer are soothing and will help the skin heal faster,” she says. And you can take ibuprofen to help with swelling. “If it blisters, never pop the blisters. Let them heal on their own to avoid infections,” Lipner says.

Still need a reason to apply (non-expired!) sunscreen regularly? Consider this patient of Lipner’s: “The worst sunburn I ever saw was in a 23-year-old woman who fell asleep on the beach. Her face and body was completely blistered. She did not seek care immediately and her wounds became infected.”

Yikes! Don’t be that woman. Before the days grow hotter, get thee to the drugstore for a fresh bottle of SPF.
