Calvin Klein to Shutter Flagship, Trim Staff, With ‘Go-Forward’ Plan

Calvin Klein Inc. is to shutter its Manhattan flagship in the wake of Raf Simons’ departure as chief creative officer and amid a changing fashion and retail landscape.
Steve Shiffman, chief executive officer of Calvin Klein Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of PVH Corp., revealed the closure among several strategic changes to the brand and organization. It was learned that approximately 100 employees were let go at the company across the entire business.
The brand’s three key initiatives include relaunching Calvin Klein 205W39NYC under a new name, design approach and creative direction. The new name is still under wraps.
The new business will focus on connecting directly to all the other Calvin Klein brands and amplifying each category with its product mix and aspirational experiences. The company plans to close its historic flagship store at 654 Madison Avenue this spring. It couldn’t be learned if another PVH or Calvin Klein brand would be taking over the lease.
The flagship, which was reimagined under Simons features a floor-to-ceiling installation by artist Sterling Ruby, had showcased the 205W39NYC collection. Ruby had transformed the decor from its minimal design by John Pawson to a maximal design featuring an overwhelming wash of bright yellow painted walls.

Payless Seeks Permission to Shutter 408 Additional Stores

Bankrupt Payless Holdings LLC is asking a St. Louis Bankruptcy Court for permission to shutter another 408 stores.
The footwear retailer, along with 28 affiliated debtors, filed its Chapter 11 petition for bankruptcy court protection on April 4. On May 17, it received the court’s nod to shutter the 389 stores it had planned to close when it filed its voluntary petition. Since then, the company said in court papers that it not only recognized the need to remodel its brick-and-mortar business to align it with worsening retail-industry conditions, it also analyzed whether it needed to close any additional stores to align with its broader financial and operational restructuring. The company, excluding the 389 stores set for closure, still has 3,000 unexpired leases in North America. In the macro picture, Payless has 4,000-plus stores across more than 30 countries.
Among the criteria for whether a store should be closed, the company considered profitability on an earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, amortization and restructuring basis; opportunity for rent concessions from landlords; cash flow, and ability to transfer sales to nearby locations.
Payless said in the court document filed last week that it could close fewer stores if ongoing negotiations with landlords result in consensual modifications

Jeffrey Rudes to Shutter SoHo Flagship

NEW YORK — Jeffrey Rudes will close his 5,800-square-foot store at 57 Greene Street in SoHo today. The boutique, which opened to much fanfare in July 2015, housed the designer’s luxury men’s wear and was his only freestanding store.
The reason for the closure was to focus on the brand’s “more lucrative” online business and selected wholesale accounts, a spokesman said. He added there were no plans at this time to open other freestanding stores. Rudes sells to Ron Herman in Los Angeles.
Based in Los Angeles with a design atelier in Bologna, Italy, Rudes had staged his men’s wear presentations at the SoHo store three times. In January, Rudes showed his men’s wear collection in a private duplex apartment in Paris, but also showed at the store as part of New York Fashion Week: Men’s.
At the fall 2017 presentation in Paris, Rudes, who designs alongside creative director Lorenzo Marchese, told WWD his aim is to nudge the customer gently forward each season and to offer clothes that are “wearable, approachable and consistent.”
The SoHo store was conceived by Rudes in collaboration with Steed Hale, principal of Steed Hale Interior Design & Co. Among the design elements were a renovated red brick and iron-columned
