15-Year-Old Boy Dies in His Sleep After ‘Surfing’ on Roof of an Uber — Leading to Driver’s Arrest

A New York Uber driver is accused of manslaughter after three teenage passengers who’d been drinking allegedly paid him to let them climb onto the roof of his moving car — and then one of them fell off and died, PEOPLE confirms.

The driver, 24-year-old Danyal Cheema, of Huntington Station, was charged Monday with second-degree manslaughter in the death of 15-year-old Ryan Mullen, of Cold Spring Harbor.

Cheema is being held in lieu of $ 200,000 bond following his arrest on Sunday. It was unclear if he’d entered a plea. His attorney, Christopher Renfroe, did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

In the incident shortly after midnight on Sept. 23, Cheema was behind the wheel of his 2010 Toyota Highlander as an Uber driver when he picked up the three teen boys in Huntington, after they had been drinking, according to the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office.

On the way to their destination, the boys allegedly offered Cheema $ 70 cash — and gave him $ 40 — if he’d let them climb onto the car’s roof at an intersection so they could “car surf” as the vehicle took off, the investigation revealed.

Mullen and a second teen then remained on the roof as Cheema drove along Cove Road, with the third boy recording them in a Snapchat video.

Mullen’s subsequent fall led to head trauma “which resulted in his death,” according to the prosecutor’s office. Although Cheema brought all three boys to their destination at a home in Huntington, Mullen “succumbed to his injuries in his sleep later that day,” the prosecutor’s office said.

“This was an incredibly bad decision by the defendant and a bad decision by the boys involved,” District Attorney Timothy Sini said in a news release. “But at the end of the day, this defendant is an adult who was contracted to safely bring those boys home and he failed to do that.”

“We have a culture right now where the mindset is, ‘How can we outdo each other?’ Particularly among young people on social media, and we often see the tragic consequences of that,” Sini said. “A lot of young people think they are invincible and that’s something we need to keep drilling in their heads that this could happen to anyone when you engage in this kind of conduct.”

He added: “In this day and age, we often encourage people to use ride sharing services because it’s a safe alternative to drinking and driving. These boys were doing that; they were drinking that night and they made the right decision to contract with a car service.”

“Unfortunately the defendant made a reckless decision and engaged in reckless conduct that caused the death of a young boy, and he will be held accountable for that,” Sini said.

In his obituary, Ryan was remembered as a “loving son” and “fierce friend.”

He “lived life so large and his time here was short,” his family wrote. “God had other plans.”

Cheema faces five to 15 years in prison if convicted of the manslaughter charge. He is due back in court on Friday.

Adams and Bellisario, 32, announced their daughter’s arrival on Oct. 8 alongside a photo of the newborn baby girl grasping her parents’ hands.

Thank you to everyone who fought for and protected our privacy during this incredible and beautiful time in our lives,” wrote Adams. “Everyone is happy and healthy and loving every moment of this. “I think we’ve all known for a bit,” Hale, 29, told Us Weekly in August. “I’m really happy for her.”

New Book Reveals Barbara and George H.W. Bush’s Secret to a 73-Year Marriage: Never Sleep in Separate Beds

George H.W. and Barbara Bush‘s epic love story is chronicled in a new book by their granddaughter Ellie LeBlond Sosa that reveals details about the former first couple’s “secret” engagement and advice on a lasting marriage. (“It’s a two-way street!”)

A week before her death on April 17 at the age of 92, Barbara Bush gave a last interview for Sosa’s book, George and Barbara: A Great American Love Story, out Friday. According to Sosa, Barbara was “still bright and candid — and in love with my grandfather.”

“You have to go 75 percent of the way,” Barbara said after Sosa asked for marital advice, according to the book. “Be thoughtful and make things nice for your husband or wife … it’s a two-way street.”

She added, “I believe I’ve had a very happy marriage and I’m having a happy marriage.”

George and Barbara shows how deeply Sosa’s grandparents loved and respected each other. The book references some of the numerous love letters the couple wrote each other during WWII, and reveals that George was adamant about remaining sexually abstinent until he was married.

“Some men and women who were uncertain of their fates decided to skip the long-established rule of waiting until marriage, but George and his older brother Prescott did not agree,” Sosa writes.

George and Barbara shared their first kiss before he left for training, which was “a first for both of them.”

While it’s well-known that the young couple married on Jan. 6, 1945, after a “secret” engagement, the book sheds light on how news of their engagement first leaked. During WWII, George served as a Navy pilot, while Barbara pursued studies at Smith College before eventually dropping out. They’d privately agreed to get married when George returned home on leave, but Sosa writes that their secret didn’t last long.

“A classmate at Smith kept pressing Barbara to go out on a double date,” Sosa writes. “After Barbara declined a few times, the classmate decided she must not like men and said she was an item with her roommate, Margie. That’s when Margie told everyone Barbara was actually engaged to George Bush.”

After word got out, the couple told their parents and friends. Their wedding announcement ran in The New York Times, and George made sure to keep a copy.

It remained in his wallet for decades, Sosa writes.

The book also excerpts one love letter George wrote to Barbara on Dec. 12, 1943.

“I love you, precious, with all of my heart and to know that you love me means my life,” he said. “How often I have thought about the immeasurable joy that will be ours some day. How lucky our children will be to have a mother like you.”

The couple’s son, former President George W. Bush, pays tribute to his parents’ 73-Year marriage in the foreword for the book, writing, “Because they were more committed to their marriage than they were to themselves, they were each willing to sacrifice their own needs in order to satisfy the other’s. Throughout my life, Mother and Dad demonstrated truly selfless love.”

The couple’s deep connection supported a relationship that spanned more than seven decades. Together George and Barbara navigated their daughter’s death (Robin died of leukemia when she was three), and the ups and downs of George’s political career and failed reelection bid. (George H.W. Bush served one term as the 41st U.S. president and his son George W. Bush went on to serve two terms as the 43rd president.)

Even when their health began to fail, the Bushes’ love gave them strength.

“Their doctor suggested that consider sleeping in separate beds because rest is so important at their age,” Sosa writes. “But they refused for as long as possible. George argued that when he woke in the middle of the night, he needed to be able to reach out and know that Barbara was there.”

Since Barbara’s death, George H.W. Bush, 93, has been in and out of the hospital. But he still considers himself lucky.

“Enjoying a great book and a wonderful walk down memory lane this morning,” George H.W. Bush tweeted on Friday, holding a copy of his granddaughter’s book. “Yet another reminder of just how lucky I have been in life.”

Carrie Fisher’s Death Should Be A Wakeup Call To People With Sleep Apnea

Carrie Fisher died from sleep apnea among other health issues, according to a recent statement from the Los Angeles coroner’s office. The “Star Wars” actress also had traces of several drugs, including cocaine, in her system.

Though her drug use has grabbed headlines, the coroner’s report is focused on the role of the common sleep disorder, which affects more than 18 million Americans. 

Obstructive sleep apnea, the clinical term, is a health condition that causes breathing to be interrupted during sleep and can disrupt rest throughout the night. The most common sign of the condition is chronic snoring.

Sleep apnea is serious: It raises the risk of dying early by 46 percent, according to a 2009 study. Sleep apnea also increases the chances of sudden cardiac death, a condition that kills approximately 450,000 Americans every year.

Primary care doctors typically don’t inquire about sleep apnea during regular checkups, according to Dr. Douglas Kirsch, medical director at the Carolinas HealthCare Sleep Medicine and president-elect of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. But it’s certainly something that shouldn’t be ignored.

“While it’s generally considered a chronic medical condition that people have for many years, there are some night-to-night risks for a major medical problem,” Kirsch told HuffPost.

How sleep apnea can hurt your heart

The condition on its own can lead to severe health complications. Sleep apnea can cause hypertension, heart conditions and mental health issues like depression. It’s undetermined whether or not Fisher, who died late last year at the age of 60, was getting medical help for the issue.

The disorder occurs when a person’s airway becomes obstructed. This could happen for a number of reasons, including structural issues like oversized tonsils or an issue where the tongue and throat muscles relax and block the windpipe. Being overweight can also increase a person’s risk for developing the disorder.

A blocked airway is essentially what leads to the disrupted breathing that occurs with the condition. When breathing is delayed, it causes oxygen levels in the blood to decrease. This drop essentially puts pressure on the cardiovascular system, which makes the heart work harder in order to keep everything in check.

This process is what ultimately contributes to a higher risk of high blood pressure and heart issues for people with sleep apnea, according to the American Sleep Association. The condition can also lead to irregular heartbeats.

If left untreated, sleep apnea puts a person at greater risk for heart attack and stroke.

The deadly relationship between drug use and sleep disorders

It’s important to note that the coroner listed the cause of her death as “undetermined” and there’s no proven link between the drug use and sleep apnea in the case of Fisher’s death. But experts say substances like alcohol and medications can make the condition worse.

Research has also found that sleep disturbances and addiction may be linked. Those with substance use disorders may be more likely to develop sleep disorders, according to a small 2009 study. Separate research has found a link between chronic opioid use and sleep apnea, indicating the use of those substances may induce disordered breathing while asleep.

What to do if you suspect you have the condition

Because the common symptom of sleep apnea ― snoring ― can also be a harmless sleep problem, many people don’t often think to get checked for the issue. Aside from snoring, Kirsch recommends looking out for daytime sleepiness or waking up in the middle of the night as indicators that you might have the condition. Morning headaches can also be a sign.

Fortunately, there are ways to fix sleep apnea. Some doctors may recommend doing a sleep study, where physicians will examine factors like your heart rate, airflow and blood oxygen levels while you rest to determine whether or not the condition is present. Medical professionals may also determine if you need a continuous positive airway pressure device (more commonly known as a CPAP), which is a mask that helps keep the airway open during sleep.

Some other methods in managing sleep apnea include possible dental procedures or a surgical procedure to fix the issue that may be causing a blocked airway. Lifestyle changes like weight management through diet and exercise and cutting back on alcohol can also help control the disorder’s severity.

“Patients will delay testing because they are worried about the treatment options for [sleep apnea],” Kirsch said. “That’s like not getting your blood pressure checked because you are worried about treating high blood pressure, it doesn’t make sense … I have many, many patients, who after starting treatment, bemoan the fact that they had delayed for so long because they feel so much better. “

As with all medical issues, the best course of action is to start by talking to your doctor.

“If you have a concern about your sleep, speak to your primary care physician about it, and if they are unable to help, seek help from a board-certified sleep physician,” Kirsch stressed.

‘Juice’ Director Says We Can’t Let Future Generations Sleep On Classic Black Films

Twenty-five years since the release of “Juice,” Ernest R. Dickerson is proud that his directorial debut has stood as a cultural staple in America.

This month, Paramount Home Media Distribution will commemorate the film’s anniversary with a special release of a Blu-ray disc. Starring Tupac Shakur, Omar Epps, Khalil Kain and Jermaine Hopkins ― with cameos by Samuel L. Jackson and Queen Latifah ― the powerful drama follows the lives of four teenage friends in pursuit of power and respect in their Harlem neighborhood as they grapple with the trials of inner-city life.

Inspired by his adolescent years growing up in Newark, New Jersey, Dickerson ― who broke into the industry as Spike Lee’s cinematographer ― tells HuffPost that he wanted the drama to accurately portray the obstacles young black men and boys face living in America.

“It took about nine years to get the film made. But it grew from out of several places,” he said. “I wanted to talk about how kids were growing up in society and we were horrified by that. And so, in wanting to craft a thriller and a film noir around 16-, 17-year-old antagonists, it just felt like that was the way to go and the best story to tell. Peer pressure was always gonna be a part of it.”

The commemorative release will feature new and vintage interviews with members of the cast and crew, never-before-released footage and the original film’s alternate ending.

“Juice” marked Shakur’s first major starring film role. He beat out the likes of actor Donald Faison and fellow rapper Treach for the role of the troubled, gun-toting teen Bishop. Shakur’s seminal performance was applauded by fans and film critics.

“He understood the pain inside Bishop and could express that in his acting,” Dickerson recalled. “He made Bishop a more four-dimensional character in that he knew that this anger came from someplace. The anger came from a deep hurt.”

“Part of it was the experience of having to see [Bishop’s] father brutalized and traumatized in prison; that’s one of the things that we end at in the film. That’s the thing that Pac brought, too. When he came to the audition, people believed he was Bishop. And he believed he was Bishop, too,” he said.

The filmmaker added that prior to Shakur’s untimely death in 1996, he was “hoping to find another project” to work on with the rapper-actor.

With its January 1992 opening, the film debuted at No. 2 at the box office. It earned over $ 8 million in its opening weekend and has grossed $ 20.1 million domestically to date, according to Box Office Mojo.

Despite its relatively low earnings, Dickerson says it’s imperative to reintroduce black cult classic films ― such as “Juice,” “Boyz n the Hood” and “Menace II Society” ― to enlighten a new generation of viewers. 

“These films are a part of our cultural heritage,” the filmmaker said. “And we have to make sure that they’re there for future generations to experience, and to enjoy and learn from. These are not throwaway films, this is the cultural heritage of America, and we need to make sure that we preserve that.”

“Not just these films, but all films. Films are important,” he continued. “It’s one of the greatest art forms of the 20th and 21st century. People need to take film much more seriously and the preservation of film much more serious.”

The special 25th anniversary edition of “Juice” is now available on Blu-ray and DVD. It will also be released on Digital HD on June 13.

A 2015 National Sleep Foundation survey found that as many as 25 percent of couples reported sleeping in separate beds ― and 10 percent of couples reported sleeping in separate bedrooms. But don’t assume it’s sign of relationship trouble.

While sleeping separately may sound like a 1950s “I Love Lucy” throwback, sleep experts say it might be the best thing you and your partner can do for your shut-eye. 

Snoring, overactive sleepers, different temperature preferences or opposite sleep/wake times can ruin a partner’s rest, Phyllis Zee, director of the Sleep Disorders Center at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, told The Huffington Post.

And while bed sharing does help build emotional comfort and closeness that benefits relationships, sleeping side-by-side is not the only way to achieve that, Zee said. (Couples who sleep apart can try a morning or nighttime routine for cuddling and sex, she added.) 

“Getting good quality sleep is important for relationships ― bed-sharing or not,” she said. “It’s a personal decision, not necessarily a sign of marital problems.”

How Kids’ Sleep Can Be Influenced by Digital Media

In 2014, the National Sleep Foundation found that most 15- to 17-year-olds routinely get seven hours or fewer hours of sleep, which is a good two hours less sleep than they need for a healthy life. The foundation also found that sleep quality was better among children who turned their digital devices off before bedtime than those who took their devices to bed. It would thus seem that there is a connection between screen time and sleep. Is this connection somatic (purely physical), psychosomatic (caused by the mind) or just mass hysteria brought about by digital ubiquity?

At a very basic level, time on a gadget during bedtime is time not spent in sleep; 6- to 10-year-old children with three technology types in their bedroom achieved 45 minutes less sleep than those without. It is only logical to believe that older children, with their more active social life, would spend more time on gadgets than the surveyed pre-tweens. Delayed bedtime or truncated total sleep time caused by “time displacement” by technology and media items in an adolescent’s bedroom has been reported to result in sleep deprivation, sleep-onset latency (SOL), sleep difficulties, night-time awakenings, and parasomnias.

Time displacement is augmented by biochemical effects of screen time as well. Adolescence is already associated with circadian (sleep) phase alterations, which along with social demands (early school timings etc.), can cause sleep deprivation. It is well-known that light also affects the circadian rhythm. Light suppresses melatonin, the sleep-promoting hormone, and recent studies have found that backlight from gadgets (particularly tablets set to full brightness) can cause statistically significant melatonin suppression after just two hours of exposure. The dose, exposure duration, timing and wavelength of light play important roles in sleep patterns. Suppression of melatonin secretion and alterations of sleep rhythms are more sensitive to short-wavelength light (blue) than mid- (green) or long-wavelength (red) light especially at at the brightness at which gadgets typically work.

Longer screen time is also linked to eating disorders and higher calorie intake. Longer media hours have been found to be associated with consumption of more soft drinks and junk food. There is also strong evidence for a direct connection between screen-based sedentary behavior and weight, particularly when screen time exceeds two hours. How is this related to sleep? A 20-year review of obesity-associated diseases among children aged 6 to 17 conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention concluded that obesity in children is a reason for increased incidence of sleep apnea that leads to sleep deprivation. Sleep deprivation in turn leads to more obesity in a vicious cycle that can effectively be traced back to extensive media use.

The psychological and physiological unrest caused by media and social interaction may also interfere with the ability to fall and stay asleep. Technostress and ICT or information and communication technology stress, the state of mental and physiological arousal observed in persons who are heavily dependent on computers, gadgets and e-games, are now pervasive maladies. Studies have shown that the stress due to excessive technology use is related to sleep disturbances. Researchers at the University of Gothenburg studied the habits of more than 4,100 Swedish men and women, aged between 20 and 24, and found that those who constantly use a computer or their mobile phone can develop stress, sleeping disorders and depression. Sleeping disorders and depression are connected by a common chemical — melatonin and we already know that blue light of the screen can disrupt melatonin in the body, leading not only to sleep deprivation, but also depression. Like obesity and sleep deficit, depression and sleep problems form a vicious cycle, one feeding the other in a downward spiral.

No correlation study can be complete without awareness of possible pitfalls of association. For example, the observed connection between sleep deprivation and technology use may not point to a causal impact of screen time on sleep outcomes. There is a high possibility that the reverse is true because youth who need less sleep or have sleeping disorders may spend more time with technology, either as a coping mechanism or just to pass time. Another possible source of error in such correlation studies is that they are largely based on self-reported or parental reported data of screen exposure and the outcome variables. Such reports could be highly opinionated and are often not validated against an objective standard. Teenagers, for example, can overestimate or underestimate their total sleep time/problems vis-a-vis screen time due to ignorance, peer pressure and even denial. Measurement errors and inconsistencies could also lead to faulty associations.

Like breathing, eating and drinking, sleeping is a life-sustaining activity, and anything that adversely affects it must be dealt with before damage becomes irreversible. However, it is regressive to believe that technology itself must be ousted because of sleep problems, much like advocating that breathing is dangerous because of air pollution. Logical moderation is the key to living. There is clearly a dose-response relationship between screen time and sleep and a threshold for screen-based recreation. For example, the risk of sleep problems was found to increase two-fold in adolescent girls engaging in screen-based activities for four or more hours per day. So, is four hours the magic number? Can the limit be generalized for an entire population? Obviously not. The threshold must eventually be set by every individual based on their own nature and needs.

In Sickness and In Sleep: Married to a Chronic Sleep Walker

I don’t nag my husband, Isaac, to do chores around the house. But sometimes I wake him up in the middle of the night screaming that there are enormous spiders in our sheets, and evil guinea pigs in the closet. I don’t complain when he watches football all day or puts his dirty clothes on the floor directly next to the hamper. But I have been known to sneak down to the kitchen and eat the lunch he so carefully packed for work the next day. I don’t mind that he leaves the toilet seat up after every trip to the restroom, and I don’t hold onto grievances from past arguments. But sometimes in the dead of the night, I will sit straight up and whisper spine-chilling things to him. Things that would give Marilyn Manson nightmares. And for the remainder of his sleepless night, Isaac will lay next to me wondering what he got himself into when he said, “I do.”

In my opinion, Isaac knew exactly what he was getting into when he married me. It’s not like we said our wedding vows and suddenly my sleep walking and sleep talking disorder was activated. I was not a sleeping beauty whose subconscious beast was awaiting a prince charming to kiss it to life. In fact, very early into our relationship, Isaac got a taste of the “crazy train”, as he so lovingly calls it.

He was playing poker with friends one night when I called screaming that someone was trying to break into our apartment. I was hysterical and told him to please hurry home, I wasn’t sure if I could hold the door shut for much longer. I remember wrestling with the door knob, my sweaty hands desperate to hold it shut while the villain on the other side fought to open it. Isaac raced home not knowing what he would find– his girlfriend missing or dead? His apartment burglarized? He found neither. Instead, Isaac screeched into the driveway and flung the door open to find a soundly sleeping girlfriend, no burglar in sight. He woke me up and I immediately knew what had happened– I had acted out (an Oscar-worthy performance, I might add) the nightmare I was having.

My sleep talking isn’t always of the horror movie variety. There was a night a few weeks ago where I sang so loudly (and badly) in my sleep that I was eventually awoken by Isaac’s howling, tears of laughter streaming down his cheeks. A few weeks before that, I was the one doing the laughing. In the middle of a dead sleep, I began giggling uncontrollably. I wandered around the house to try and stifle my giggles, but it proved futile. I could not stop laughing. Isaac said while funny at first, sleep-laughing with a zombie-like, distant expression on my face became exceptionally creepy after 15 minutes.

The stories go on and on. Almost every night I put on some sort of show, even if it’s simply to ask Isaac if Santa Claus brought him the shirt he is sleeping in, to proclaim that I am wetting the bed followed by maniacal laughter (I didn’t actually wet the bed), or to yell at him to not spill any salsa in the sheets (he never eats salsa in bed).

My sleep stories have definitely been a source of comedy in our relationship, but we recently wondered if there may actually be something wrong with me, and my brain. While Isaac would argue that yes, there is definitely something wrong with me (sleep disorder or not), a visit to a neurologist and a gold star on my sleep study proved otherwise. As it turns out, I am simply in the 3.6% of adults who have a sleep walking disorder. In fact, I even used the intercom to sleep talk to the technician monitoring my sleep study! Regardless, the doctor said I had one of the best sleep studies he had ever seen. Of course I did.

Since the sleep study, I have thankfully found ways to naturally decrease my somnambulant adventures. While Isaac recommended a skilled exorcist or priest, I instead tried altering my diet by cutting out all sugar and preservatives. Within just a few days, my nightmares and night terrors became nonexistent. I still sleep walk and sleep talk, but they are never prolonged, terrifying episodes like they used to be. I also cut down on binge-watching crime TV shows which, to nobody’s surprise, seemed to exacerbate my already overactive dream state. Sorry Detective Benson, it’s not you, it’s me.

Do you need some marriage perspective? Consider yourself lucky if your wife has never sat up in a pitch black room and whispered, “She wants to know what your insides look like.” Is your husband’s sloppiness driving you crazy? Be thankful that he has never frantically rearranged the bedroom in his sleep, moving everything to higher ground in preparation for the approaching flood he is dreaming about. Do you enjoy uninterrupted sleep? Be grateful that your spouse doesn’t push you off of the bed in a moment of panic because you are “sleeping on a pile of puppies who need rescuing.”

While Isaac and I, over the span of our marriage, will surely encounter the relationship problems that most couples face, at least we know things in the bedroom will never get dull.

This Is What Happens When You Prioritize Sleep in College

A college student who gets a full night’s sleep may be an anomaly. It’s almost an oxymoron and reading this your initial reaction may be, “That’s not possible.” Still, the National Sleep Foundation recently published new guidelines, “How Much Sleep Do We Really Need?” which shows that Young Adults (18-25 years) require 6-11 hours of sleep, with 7-9 being seen as the sweet spot.

I recently got through reading Arianna Huffington’s Thrive and was taken by the inspection of many people wearing their lack of sleep as a badge of honor. In “Thrive,” former Google China President Lee Kao-Fu is quoted by saying: “I naively used to compete with others to see who could sleep less. I made ‘fighting to the death’ a personal motto.”

On campus, I’m pretty involved. I’m a Peer Advisor, involved in a variety of leadership and media clubs, and I am on my fifth internship. In the fall of my sophomore year, I was working 6 jobs. People would joke with me about how I did it all, and my common response would be “Who needs sleep?” or “There ain’t no rest for the wicked.”

But why is that cool? Why is it, that we admire and aspire to sleep little. So after reading Thrive, I’ve made sleep a priority. I set a “bed-time” alarm, don’t use my phone in bed, and try to schedule sleep above many other things. Has it been easy? Of course not, but I feel much better and it’s given me quite the cynical lens of viewing others.

So I’d like to share, in Gif form what it was like to prioritize sleep:

The First Night Feels Really Weird

I got in bed at 10:00 p.m., and felt like there were so many other things I could be doing. I could do my laundry, or just go chat with my roommates? Or I could sleep.

Get used to being called a grandparent. I have a smart watch and my roommates/friends all share an ever-so-warm eyeroll when it begins vibrating. Guys, I’m about to turn into a Pumpkin…sorry.

Staying Up Late Becomes an Actual Chore
