‘Bird Box’ Is Full of Plot Holes. We Tried (and Sometimes Failed) to Plug Them.

For a certain type of fan, half the fun of watching a movie is pointing out the logical inconsistencies. “Bird Box” gave us plenty.

Isla Fisher Says She’s Not Working with a Stylist: ‘Sometimes You Just Pull a Dress’

Isla Fisher is “going rogue” without a stylist these days.

During a night out at the 6th Annual AACTA International Awards at the Avalon Hollywood in Hollywood, California, on Friday night, Fisher revealed to reporters that her bright yellow Monique Lhuillier gown on Friday night was all her idea.

“I’m not working with a stylist right now. So I chose it myself,” she told PEOPLE.

“I think stylists are wonderful,” she continued. “When things come up at the last minute and you’re in a rush, sometimes you just pull a dress. I’ve got a lot of responsibilities, and my career is just a part of a whole big puzzle.”

And Fisher says there are definitely pros and cons to what she calls “going rogue” on the red carpet.

“My stylists in the past have been wonderful and reminded me whether or not to cross your legs, whether to put a hand on your hip,” she said. “But of course, whatever great advice you get, to hoist your dress up, or to maneuver your lady parts into them, more prominent position.

“But whatever you’re told, obviously in the moments pre-the ceremony, when you get out of the car and there’s a line of photographers shouting your name, you just tend to go rogue and do absolutely anything and then look back and regret it.”

As for her daughters’ thoughts on her selection?

“I think the quote was, ‘Mommy you look like a banana tonight.’ I mean, I’ll take anything.”

Fisher isn’t the only celebrity picking out her own looks. Blake Lively also famously does not need help styling herself.

“I’ve always loved fashion,’ she told the UK edition of Marie Claire in its October 2010 issue. “That’s why I don’t use a stylist. Number one, it’s such an expression of self.”

What do you think of Isla’s not-so-wintry look? Sound off below!

Sometimes Obama Is Just A Dad Too

President Barack Obama’s father left him and his mother when he was just a young child, and as president he has made a regular effort to spend time with his family every day.

On Father’s Day, here are some glimpses of Obama just being a dad.

He’s really proud of his daughters

obama family

Despite living in the White House, Obama says that his two daughters, Malia, 16, and Sasha, 14, are actually pretty normal.

“The truth is the girls are wonderful,” Obama told “Extra,” earlier this month. “You know they work hard, they work a lot harder than I ever did when I was a kid.”

“Most importantly, they’re kind, they’re respectful, they don’t have an attitude,” he said. “Partly because maybe my mother-in-law was here, you know we say we don’t want to see any attitude out of them. And they’ve been terrific.”

He wants his daughters to make as much as their male counterparts

As president, Obama has backed legislation to get equal pay for women and has framed the issue as a personal one for him.

“Why would I want my spouse or my daughter discriminated against? That doesn’t make any sense,” he said in April.

He’s got pretty good dating advice

Obama often jokes about the Secret Service detail that he has following his daughters around, but when it comes to dating, he has said that he wants to be hands off.

“What I’ve told them before is, as long as that young man is showing you respect, and is kind to you, then I’m not going to be hovering over every second,” he told television host Steve Harvey in 2013.

Obama also said that it was “a little bit jarring” to see Malia in heels for the first time when she attended her first prom last year.

He helped coach Sasha’s basketball team to a championship

In 2012, Obama said that he helped the head coach of Sasha’s basketball team run through practice drills on their way to winning a tournament championship. Obama also once filled in coaching for the team on short notice.

His daughters still think he is embarrassing

Obama told Extra earlier this month that Sasha and Malia still are embarrassed by him. Some of that may have been on display at the annual Turkey pardon in 2014 when he asked them if they wanted to pet the turkeys and Malia simply said “no.”

He knows how to flaunt dad jeans

Enough said.

Sometimes You Don’t Need a Planner

This blog probably seems odd to be written by a planner, but hear me out. Not everyone should hire a planner. That’s not to say that everyone doesn’t need a planner, but for those people that cannot get out of their own way, a planner might not be for you.

I admit to being an OCD control freak. It’s pretty much my way or no way at all. This is why I didn’t hire a planner. Short of cloning myself, there was no one that I was going to trust with the most important day of my life. And that’s OK. It’s OK to be psycho crazy about your wedding. If you’re normally all about the details and believe that if you want something done right, you better do it yourself, then a planner might not be for you.

Over the years I have run into these brides and grooms, the ones that think they know best and that no professional could possibly be the answer to their prayers. I end up working with these couples and wonder why they have hired me to plan their wedding day. They want what they want and, more importantly, are only willing to get what they want, their way.

There is no suggestion you can make, unless it coincides with their own, that they will deem acceptable. No matter how brilliant the idea is, the planner will be met with “Ok, what else you got?”

“What else I got?” Yes, this is a question I have received and it’s like, well, what else do you want?

That’s the whole joke too. These people want you to suggest everything, but nothing you suggest is ever going to be good enough. It’s like you’re supposed to be Madam Cleo and figure out what they want.

Planners are not mind readers. We can plan your day based on what you like and what you don’t like. But if you don’t help us out, then nothing we create is going to be what you want to see. Help us. Give us pictures. Share your thoughts and ideas. These things are helpful.

But back to the brides and grooms that just don’t want to hear anything we have to say. Why did you hire a planner? Seriously. Ask yourself that question. Because if you cannot come up with a legitimate answer, then you are wasting your money. I have worked with brides that would ask my opinion and if I said “black”, and they wanted to hear “white”, it was an issue. Then there always came the point where I said to my clients to do whatever they wanted to do. My opinion (I knew) meant nothing, and they really didn’t want me to do anything other than agree with them.

And here’s the thing, a good planner, is not going to agree with your bad ideas. Oh, you want to swoop in on a pterodactyl for your grand entrance and you want to know if I think your dress might get wrecked? But when I say “absolutely it will get wrecked, hello, pterodactyl!!!!” you get mad because that’s not what you wanted to hear.

You know why we don’t want you to make these tragic mistakes? Because we’ve seen everything. There are some of the most ridiculous warning labels out there like “don’t eat this” on silica gel. Well, duh, don’t eat it. Why do they have to say that? Because some idiot probably ate it. We are giving you warning labels because we have seen what can and will happen when stupid decisions are made. What happened when someone drank hot coffee that was marked “caution: hot”? She got burned, and then she sued.

Basically, we, as planners, don’t want you suing us or writing bad reviews because we let you do whatever you wanted. When we say that something is a bad idea, or make a suggestion, we aren’t trying to ruin your life and destroy your vision. We’re trying to make it so that your wedding is beautiful and you aren’t in tears because some prehistoric bird ate your gown.

Other things that aren’t helpful? “I went to a wedding and my friend only spent….”. STOP. Everyone lies about what they spend on a wedding. Some go higher, some lower, but without looking at the contracts, I don’t care if you’re besties with them and pinky swore to tell each other the cost of the weddings you’re planning. She is lying to you and you are lying to her. Liars. Both of you. Pants ablaze.

What you do not do, is you do not go back to your planner with this information. When a planner hears that so and so said it can be done for much less, you are basically telling the planner that they know nothing and need to look into this. I’ve done this for clients before and 100% of the time they’ve been wrong on the numbers. Basically, the result was that I wasted a bunch of time to say “I told you so”. It’s not worth it.

The moral of the story is that if you want to plan your own wedding, then plan your own wedding. No one is judging you, and you’re the only person that can figure out if you need a planner and will be able to work with one. Not everyone can work with a planner, and that’s OK too.

Just use the pterodactyl for your trash the dress session instead of your entrance. Ok?

Billy Crystal: Gay Scenes On TV Sometimes ‘Too Much For Me’

Billy Crystal was one of the first actors to play a gay character on television, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t wary of some of the gay content that ends up on the small screen.

The beloved comedian opened up about his feelings regarding the nature of gay scenes on television while speaking at a panel for the Television Critics Association on Sunday in Pasadena, California, the Independent reports.

“Sometimes I think, ‘Ah that’s too much for me,'” Crystal said. “Sometimes, it’s just pushing it a little too far for my taste and I’m not going to reveal to you which ones they are.”

As Deadline reports, Crystal also spoke about his groundbreaking gay character, Jodie Dallas, which he played on ABC’s “Soap” from 1977 to 1981.

Crystal spoke about the role on Sunday, ET Canada reports:

There were times where I would say to [the actor who played his boyfriend], ‘Bob, “I love you,’ and the audience would laugh nervously, because, you know, it’s a long time ago, that I’d feel this anger. I wanted to stop the tape and go, ‘What is your problem?’ Because it made you sort of very self-conscious about what we were trying to do then. And now it’s just, I see it and I just hope people don’t abuse it and shove it in our face — well, that sounds terrible — to the point of it just feels like an everyday kind of thing.

Crystal is currently promoting his upcoming new FX series “The Comedians,” which is his first television series since “Soap.”

In recent years, more and more queer content is making its way onto the airwaves. Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender characters and storylines can be seen in popular shows like “Looking,” “Modern Family,” “Empire,” “Transparent,” “Orange is the New Black,” “American Horror Story” and “Glee.”

Earlier this month, comedian Kevin Hart also sounded off on gay roles in Hollywood. “I can’t [play a gay character] because I don’t think I’m really going to dive into that role 100 percent, because of the insecurities about myself trying to play that part,” he told hosts of the Breakfast Club on New York’s Power 105.1. “What I think people are going to think while I’m trying to do this is going to stop me from playing that part the way I’m supposed to.”
