Fashion For Good Extends Reach in South Asia With Callout to Innovative Start-ups

DISRUPTORS WELCOME: The sustainability-minded Fashion for Good is expanding to South Asia with the launch of a regional innovation program.
In line with that, the Amsterdam-based group is in search of South Asia-based innovative start-ups “with disruptive sustainability solutions” for the fashion supply chain. Select innovators will have the chance to showcase their solutions, as part of Fashion for Good’s Innovation Day on Nov. 24, during Mercedes Benz Sri Lanka Fashion Week. They will also have access to the group’s global partners such as its founding partner the C&A Foundation, as well as corporate ones like C&A, Adidas, Kering and PVH Corp.
Fashion for Good’s managing director Katrin Ley said, “If you look at the problem that the fashion industry is facing, the main production of garments is happening in Asia. To improve the [carbon] footprint of the fashion industry, you need to be present in the [dominant] manufacturing countries. If you want to make a difference, you need to be able to implement those solutions locally. Given that those markets are also growing from a consumer perspective — all of the end-of-use, recycling, landfill problems that we’re seeing so much of now in North America and Europe — will at one

Perry Ellis Installs Solar Roof on South Carolina Plant

Perry Ellis International Inc. is going solar.
The company has completed the installation of a 2,432-panel rooftop solar installation on one of its largest distribution centers in Seneca, S.C.
The 83,000-square-foot roof of the 350,000-square-foot facility is the latest move in the company’s commitment to reduce its carbon footprint. PEI worked with Con Edison Solutions, a leading national energy services company and subsidiary of Con Edison Clean Energy Businesses Inc., to design and install the system. It is expected to generate approximately 1.15 gigawatt hours of energy annually, which will provide 60 percent of the energy needs of the facility.
“As a global fashion company with offices and production facilities around the world, we are placing an ever-growing focus on sustainable facets of our operation,” said Oscar Feldenkreis, chief executive officer and president of PEI. “While the industry as a whole has made some great strides, it is important to keep the momentum going to bring about positive change. This is our first major solar power installation and serves as a launchpad for additional initiatives in renewable energy and company-wide Corporate Social Responsibility programs.”

Ferragamo Touts Exclusive Product at New South Coast Plaza Boutique

ALL GLAMMED UP: Salvatore Ferragamo has opened a door at South Coast Plaza, which also marks the release of an accessories capsule exclusive to the Orange County boutique.
The capsule, designed by creative director Paul Andrew and men’s ready-to-wear design director Guillaume Meilland, includes footwear and men’s, including a men’s backpack bearing South Coast Plaza’s directional coordinates and silk quilting on footwear and handbags. The capsule, the company said, is inspired by California.
The pieces exclusive to South Coast range in price from $ 725 for the men’s leather and denim sneakers to $ 1,890 for the silk quilted messenger handbag.
The store’s footprint totals over 5,500 square feet and is broken down into four rooms with an assortment that includes men’s and women’s shoes, ready-to-wear, bags and leather goods, among other accessories.
The design, which was initially rolled out for the company’s Beverly Hills location, draws some references to Hollywood with Art Deco lamps, anchored by wool carpeting and seating in pink velvet and bouclé on the women’s side and red leather for the men’s. Travertine and marble make up the boutique’s exterior.

South African Fashion on Show at Zeitz MOCAA

South Africa’s fashion and art crowd descended upon Cape Town this week for the pre-opening party of contemporary art museum Zeitz MOCAA’s first fashion exhibition, “21 Years: Making Histories With South African Fashion Week.”
SA Fashion Week, founded by former model Lucilla Booyzen in 1997, marked the anniversary last October with a small exhibition shown during the presentation of the SAFW 2019 fall collections in the Johannesburg suburb of Sandton City. Booyzen chose 21 designers as a historical recap of the past 21 years of SA fashion, and planned a book to accompany the exhibit.
“When Erica de Greef, the senior fashion curator of Zeitz MOCAA, heard that I was going to do a book and an exhibition, she was incredibly excited, and she then planned to do an edited version of what I did in Johannesburg at Zeitz,” Booyzen recounted.
Curated by de Greef, the exhibition occupies two gallery spaces on the museum’s fourth level and features 21 ensembles from 21 designers, spanning different styles, multiple collections and various seasons, showcasing, in effect, a micro-history of South African fashion since 1997. On show are designers such as Clive Rundle, Amanda Laird Cherry and Loxion Kulca, alongside younger names such as Sindiso Khumalo, Thebe

EXCLUSIVE: Jacquemus to Present First Men’s Collection in South of France

CLOSING ACT: He’s already the opening act of women’s Paris Fashion Week, and now Simon Porte Jacquemus is to close Paris Men’s Fashion Week, with his own event set the day after the official season ends — and somewhere far, far away from the City of Light.
The maverick designer will present the first men’s collection under his Jacquemus label in a yet-to-be-disclosed southern French city on June 25.
Among the possible locations, Porte Jacquemus, whose sun-soaked universe is deeply inspired by his upbringing in Provence, has deep ties with Marseille, where he spent much of his youth. The designer already presented a catwalk show there last May, as the special guest of the city’s OpenMyMed festival.
For that, he had models in looks from his spring 2017 women’s collection walk across a soaring flat footbridge linking the open-air Place d’Armes in the Fort Saint Jean, a 17th-century military complex with panoramic views over the port of Marseille, to the Rudy Ricciotti-designed main building of the Museum for Europe and the Mediterranean, or MuCEM.

Alexander McQueen, Givenchy to Open South Coast Plaza Boutiques

Alexander McQueen and Givenchy are the latest luxury brands to sign leases at South Coast Plaza. They are to join more than 250 boutiques at the retail center in late spring, and the McQueen boutique will be the only Orange County location for the brand (there is a store on Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles), while the Givenchy boutique is a Southern California exclusive (it’s one brand that’s missing on Rodeo Drive).
Family-run South Coast Plaza, which the late Henry Segerstrom built into one of the most profitable retail centers in the world, with annual sales topping $ 1 billion, is already home to Dior, Tiffany & Co., Gucci, Prada, Louis Vuitton, Harry Winston, Hermès and The Webster. Segerstrom was many times the first to bring European brands such as Courreges to the States. SCP this year celebrated its 50th anniversary.

The Givenchy store at the Aventura Mall in Miami.

The McQueen boutique will be located on Level 2 of the center in the Nordstrom Wing, while the Givenchy boutique will be located on Level 2 near Jewel Court. The locations are significant because South Coast Plaza has more than 1 million feet of retail space, and customers often must park — or valet

The new store is nearly 1,600 square feet and located in the Carousel Court in the center of the plaza. South Korea Has A New President, But His Hot Bodyguard Is Stealing The Show

After a year-long scandal surrounding South Korea’s former president, the country finally swore in their new leader, Moon Jae-in, this week. Moon represents a turning point for the country whose government was embroiled in a high-profile corruption scandal.

And that’s all well and good, but there’s someone in the new president’s camp who is causing a different type of scandal.

His name is Choi Young-jae, according to the Korea Times, but you may know him on Twitter as the new South Korean president’s hot bodyguard.

Choi is said to be a part of President Moon’s “handsome brigade,” a term coined by Korean media and given to the group of apparently good-looking individuals who have been selected to be the “attractive public face of the new administration,” according to the Korea Times.

Even in the attractive presidential bunch, Choi’s smoldering good looks have captured the internet’s heart.

Twitter user Elena Yip, who was one of the first people to publicly praise the distractingly handsome bodyguard, even imagined a romantic storyline for Choi that would fit right into passionate Korean drama TV.

The way he’s always photographed staring sternly into the crowd makes for the perfect inspiration for fan fiction.

After pictures of Choi went viral this week, South Korean blog AllKpop.com did the internet a favor and unleashed even more photos of the now-famous bodyguard.

No one seemed to mind the additional eye-candy, but, sadly, that’s all that Choi can ever be for most people. Korea’s Special Warfare Command told the Korea Times that Choi is “‘unfortunately’ married and has two daughters.”

Fans of Moon’s bodyguard will just have to find other ways to get the man’s attention.

In addition to protecting one of South Korea’s most prized assets, Choi is also doing the world another favor: He’s obliterating the stereotype that Asian men are weak and unattractive.

Thank you, President Moon, for introducing one of your finest protectors to the internet. Our collective thirst thanks you.

Richard Ford On His New Memoir And The Challenge Of Writing About The South

The preteens and teenagers in Richard Ford’s fiction are captivated ― if perplexed ― by their parents’ choices. A 15-year-old drifts around in search of his twin after his parents are arrested for robbing a bank. An even younger boy witnesses a domestic spat just before his mother flees from his life.

Like his protagonists, Ford is taken with the task of understanding his parents. His most recent book, Between Them, is not a fictional exploration of that particular family dynamic, but a pair of memoirs, one dedicated to his father, who died when Ford was 16, and one to his mother.

“Hardly an hour goes by on any day that I do not think something about my father,” he writes of Parker Ford, a hardworking traveling salesman forced to stay still after a major heart attack. Of his mother, Edna Akin, he writes, “The act of considering my mother’s life is an act of love.”

Of the pair and his relationship with them: “Our parents intimately link us, closeted as we are in our own lives, to a thing we’re not, forging a joined separateness and a useful mystery, so that even together with them we are also alone.”

This sort of matter-of-fact observation is what Ford has come to be known for, and accounts for his categorization as a writer of “dirty realism,” alongside Raymond Carver, Tobias Wolff and Cormac McCarthy. The style lends itself well to memoiristic writing, where analysis of one’s own life runs the risk of slipping into sentimentality. That’s not the case for Ford; by describing the details of his parents’ lives, and describing what he failed to ever learn about them, he gracefully pays them tribute.

Below, the author discusses the challenges of memoir-writing and his own Southern upbringing:

Is this your story, your parent’s story, or something of both?

Their story. It’s their story. It’s not my story at all. I mean, I get to tell it because I’m the only one who knows it. I’m the only person left alive who knew my parents. And so it’s inescapable if I want to testify to their experience that I be the person who tells it. I wasn’t obsessively trying to keep myself out of it, but I never imagined it as being my story, or that their importance as two people owed itself to me in any way.

How did the writing process differ for you, between writing fiction and writing these short memoirs?

Well, it was sort of a sensate difference, in that it seems starker to write about my parents because it all depended on the factual rudiments of their lives. So it seemed a little grainier, whereas writing fiction for me, which I’ve done for most of my life, has kind of a plushness to it, as if underneath the surface there’s a volume. And with any kind of nonfiction writing that depends on facts entirely, there is not that plushness. Even when I was provisionally commenting on things that [my parents] did ― supposing this or supposing that ― it still seemed fastened to the mast of the book’s factual underpinning.

You’ve talked about writing and word choice as a mode of discovery ― the meaning of a sentence may change based on a desired tone or sound. How did this function for you when writing about true things rather than made-up ones?

That’s a good question, because you still do ― one still does ― write a sentence, and you come to a point at which you need a verb, or you need even an adjective. In a piece of fiction, you can choose a word without any investment in its content. Only an investment in its effect, or where it might lead the sentence. With a piece of nonfiction you still have a choice. But you have to say about the word and its use, “Is this accurate?” Accuracy is not a phenomenon in writing fiction in the same way that it is a phenomenon in writing memoir or writing nonfiction.

There are some kinds of accuracies in fiction that obtain. If you’re writing about Great Falls, Montana, you can’t say the Missouri River runs south there. There is that sort of geographical accuracy, but even that can be subject to all kinds of fantastical whims. But still, I think, that the Missouri River runs north there is kind of inescapable.

I remember one time I wrote a story for The New Yorker, and I put the address of the YWCA, and let’s say that I said that the YWCA was at 613 2nd Street NW. And the fact checker for The New Yorker called me and said, you know, the YWCA is actually at 132 2nd Street S, and I said, “That’s fine, but it doesn’t have enough syllables.” And they said, “Well, no, this is where it is.” I said, “No, just go away.”

I was raised by two people, and they each had a view of things and a view of me, and I had a view of them which was not always consonant. I felt like if I tried to make everything completely add up, it would renounce something true about the book.
Richard Ford

These two memoirs have some redundancies and also some contradictions. Why did you choose to include them?

I was raised by two people, and they each had a view of things and a view of me, and I had a view of them which was not always consonant. I felt like if I tried to make everything completely add up, it would renounce something true about the book.

Books are written by human beings. I knew that I was leaving some things inconsistent, and I was willing to do that for the sake of a certain kind of accuracy. But also, I wasn’t there. I was there after 1944, but I wasn’t there before that.

Entire paragraphs of this book are composed of strings of questions, without answers. Why did you choose to do this?

Regarding my father, since his absence was predominant in my life, it was to try to penetrate those absences, rather than just saying, “I don’t know,” which wouldn’t make much of a story. I thought that the questioning strategy for the narrator ― me ― was in and of itself interesting.

It reminds me of some of your stories.

And in Canada also. I think it’s just something that ― in the end of “Rock Springs,” when the narrator says, “Would you think he was anybody like you?” you want to give that question over to the reader in an almost conversational way.

I do it because there are certain stories in my past, that I didn’t write, but Frank O’Connor did, that seem to me to be touching and alluring, because they represent, in their first-person interrogative style, a certain kind of human impulse to understand what is otherwise not understandable. There’s a way, when you answer the questions that you pose, of gaining dominion over your life, and demonstrating that dominion. I guess that’s why.

How has your Southern upbringing influenced your approach to writing?

Well, I grew up down the street from Eudora Welty. I started off with the assumption that one could be a writer. You could be from where I was from and be a writer. It was something that was supported in the community.

I think also, because I grew up in a racist society, in which we were constantly being told that what wasn’t true was true, that I had a natural and have a natural skepticism about what I receive, and what I’m told. And that causes me to try to provide explanations for things that I don’t believe, and that’s a way in which fiction can operate. Fiction can be a kind of imaginative explanation of something, when the discrepancy between apparent fact and truth is too wide to believe.

Fiction can be a kind of imaginative explanation of something, when the discrepancy between apparent fact and truth is too wide to believe.
Richard Ford

Even though you’re from the South, you tend to set your stories elsewhere.

Well, because everybody had written about everything I knew before I got there, and had done it better than I was going to be able to do it. If I had just let myself become a writer of the South, about Southern topics, for Southern readers, I wasn’t ever going to be a great writer, and that’s what I wanted to be. And I still do. And I had to be able to have a subject over which I was the world’s greatest expert. I was not going to be the world’s greatest expert about the South. First of all, I didn’t like the South very much, and second of all, I liked the literature that I knew about the South immoderately. Faulkner, Welty, Flannery O’Connor, Walker Percy. I thought that stuff was just great. Why did there need to be another one of them, which was all I was going to be able to be?

How has your parents’ life on the road impacted you as a writer?

I know in the book I call them transients. And in a sense they were people who didn’t, until I was born, stay in one place very long. And so I’m on a constant quest for some new experience that I could come to know and maybe use. I just never have been comfortable feeling, “This is my home and, by god, I have to stay here.”

And my parents ― my parents were both in their own way fleeing certain circumstances that obviously didn’t make them very happy. Without being miserable and malcontents, and they weren’t because they found each other at a very early age and immediately started making each other wildly happy. So when I think about where I reside, I think I reside wherever my wife is.

Do you think you’ll write more memoirs in the future, or are you more likely to return to fiction for now?

I don’t think I have anything else to write in a memoiristic way. I’ve written a few essays that are kind of memoiristic. My agent, who was very taken by the character of my grandfather really would like me to write a book about him, but I don’t know what I would write. He was a force of nature sort of guy, and did as best he could to ― he was a rakish guy, a real-chaser-after women.

And I’m certainly not going to write any autobiographies. As close as this memoir comes to autobiography, that’s close enough for me.

South Korea’s Brilliant Idea: Make Elections Better With ‘Game Of Thrones’

South Koreans voted for a new president on Tuesday. News outlets used a little pop culture inspiration ― and a lot of computer-generated imagery ― to count down the final, ahem, battle.

Remember that moment in season five of “Game of Thrones” when Drogon, one of the dragons, swoops into the arena and saves Daenerys Targaryen’s life? Seoul Broadcasting System re-created that, replacing the mother of dragons with election winner Moon Jae-in.

Moon and his opponent, Hong Joon-pyo, were also re-imagined as two warriors from that series riding into view in fur capes. A thorough analysis of the choice of capes and horses, plus the background landscape, failed to determine whether the candidates are meant to be Jon Snow and Robb Stark or Theon Greyjoy and Ramsay Bolton. You decide:

Broadcasters also spoofed some of South Korea’s favorite video games ― familiar reference points in a country where, by many accounts, more than half of the citizens play such games. Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation did several renderings of the candidates competing in Mortal Kombat.

Moon himself released custom Starcraft maps that, when one zoomed out, spelled his name, Engadget reported. Starcraft has been popular worldwide since its release in 1998, but it’s especially so in South Korea, where it has sold some 4.5 million copies and launched a professional e-sports league that lasted 14 years.

Seoul Broadcasting System also parodied the movies “Rocky” and “Terminator.”

We would be remiss if we didn’t include this artful dabbing from the candidates themselves.

With or without all the cornball pop-culture pandering, the final voter turnout was expected to hit record numbers at a time of high political tension in South Korea. Some forecasts suggested 80 percent of voters would go to the polls. As of this writing, the National Election Commission of South Korea has reported that early voter turnout was at 60 percent, according to the British newspaper The Independent.

Gianvito Rossi Showcases Collections at New South Coast Plaza Boutique

Gianvito Rossi returned to Southern California after launching his shoe brand in 2007 to present his pre-fall and spring 2018 collections at his new boutique in South Coast Plaza. The cocktails were hosted by Friends of CASA and drew a who’s who of Orange County, including South Coast Plaza comanaging director Anton Segerstrom and his wife, Jennifer. Afterward, a smaller group adjourned to AnQi by House of An for a private dinner in the designer’s honor.

But Rossi’s fans up in Los Angeles also wanted to celebrate, so Erica Pelosini organized a dinner on Friday night at the Beverly Hills home of Nathalie Marciano. “I’m bringing a taste of Italy to Los Angeles,” said the stylist of her endeavors to host as many of her compatriots as possible. There literally was a taste of Italy, as Paul Marciano (Nathalie’s ex-brother-in-law) lent his personal chef for the evening to prepare caprese salad, pasta and lamb chops.
“I put rosemary everywhere,” said Nathalie of her decorating efforts. She didn’t have to do much; her new home is a showcase for an impressive art collection

Dior Homme Opens New Store in South Coast Plaza

Dior Homme is maintaining its expansion, opening its seventh store in the U.S. at South Coast Plaza.
Owned by LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton and overseen by creative director Kris Van Assche, the luxury brand plans to unveil a clean, modern storefront in Costa Mesa, Calif., on Tuesday. The men’s store joins the Christian Dior boutique for women that opened its doors in 2010. In the past seven years that location has secured a spot as one of the brand’s top 10 doors selling women’s fashion, buoyed by business from regional customers as well as international traffic.
Showing growth in the last few years, Dior Homme also can take advantage of South Coast Plaza’s proximity to Hollywood. Joe Jonas, Mahershala Ali and Rami Malek were some of the celebrities who donned clothes by the brand during this year’s awards season.
“South Coast Plaza is an important market for us,” said Renaud de Lesquen, president of Christian Dior Couture and Parfums Christian Dior. “We have wanted to open a Dior Homme boutique in South Coast Plaza for a number of years, but we also wanted to make sure we had the ideal space and perfect location within the plaza in order to best showcase

Swedish fashion brand J. Lindeberg plans e-commerce expansions into both North and South America in 2017, moves that could expand online revenues by more than 100 percent in 2018, the company said.
The brand recently became available in Canada. David Feiner, acting director of e-commerce, said the company believes “there is a huge opportunity to capture the Canadian market, and we see the online channel as a catalyst. We look forward to quickly expanding into these new territories.”
Jonas Andersson, president of U.S. operations, said, “We have barely scratched the surface for J.Lindeberg in the Americas, specifically online. We remain committed to fueling growth in this digital world and furthering our partnership with BestRetail.”
BestRetail is a provider of cloud-based retail platforms, and provides J. Lindeberg with the platform for its online presence.
Andersson said the company re-platformed in the summer of 2015, which has helped it double its online business in 2015. The company said it expects “similar results for fiscal 2016.”
Founded in 1996 in Stockholm, the brand is distributed in more than 35 countries. It offers active lifestyle collections in menswear, womenswear, golf and skiwear.

South African Raku Animal Figurine – Leopard

South African Raku Animal Figurine – Leopard

Bring the safari to you with these spectacular ceramic African wildlife art pieces. Abstract and colorful, they represent a small sampling of South Africa’s native animals, captured with Raku glazing techniques. The vibrancy and unique quality of these sculptures bring the essence of African life into your home, making you feel as though you have traveled the world without ever leaving your living room! Each piece was created by a South African artisan named Lorraine Marinkowitz, inspired by the natural beauty of the wildlife in South Africa, and the colors and geometric shapes used by the Ndebele tribe to decorate their homes. Since the manufacturing process only allowed the use of earth-tones, Lorraine developed a special technique to achieve the bright colors and geometric shapes present on her work. Hare: In many cultures, the hare is thought to be good luck, and shouting the word on the first day of the month is said to bring a family good luck. Ladybug: A symbol of luck and love, it’s said that the number of spots on a ladybug are the number of months that will pass before a wish for love will come true. Leopard: Leopards are featured in art, mythology, and folklore wherever they are found. Penguin: An animal loved worldwide for their apparent lack of fear of man and playful personalities. Barbados – Bridgetown & the South

Barbados – Bridgetown & the South

Surrounded by miles of magnificent white sand beaches, protected by coral reefs and brushed by the constant breeze of the trade winds, Barbados is a swimmer’s paradise. The west coast beaches are calm and lapped by the Caribbean. The south coast has small to medium waves that are great for windsurfing and boogie boarding, while the southeast coast has big waves and is only suitable for strong swimmers. Because of its location, tropical storms and hurricanes common to other Caribbean islands generally miss Barbados. As a coral island, Barbados is home to a vast array of caves and underground lakes, which provide some of the purest drinking water in the world. The island is also home to rainforests, marshes and mangrove swamps, along with pastures and sugarcane fields. It has a diverse and interesting landscape, making it a fascinating place to explore. Bridgetown is the only city outside of North America that George Washington visited. The house where he stayed has been renovated, and is now known as the George Washington House. Bridgetown is the main shopping center in Barbados and is home to a large and varied selection of shops. You will need to take your passport with you in order to take advantage of the tax-free shopping. If you are planning a purchase of high-end jewelry, precious stones, electronic or photographic equipment, the shops in Barbados offer some great duty free deals, some even sell at wholesale prices. Christ Church is the southernmost parish, bordered by St Michael to the west, St George to the north, and St Philip to the east. Grantley Adams Airport is in this parish, and it is one of the most developed parts of the island, with numerous restaurants, nightclubs, hotels, and bars. The beaches are generally safe for swimming, but can have strong currents and occasionally strong waves. There are lots of water sports on the south coast, including windsurfing, kite surfing, wake boarding, snorkeling, jet skiing, and a host of others. All of the det

The Success of Tesco’s International Expansion in South Korean Market. Examination and Analysis of Key Factors

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2011 in the subject Business economics – Trade and Distribution, grade: A, University of Kent, language: English, abstract: This study examines the international business strategies adopted by Tesco for its expansion and development is South Korea. Tesco is a global brand and a world leader in the retail food industry. Using qualitative secondary information, this dissertation presents a market analysis and discusses the FDI policies of the target market to analyze the external factors contributing to the expansion of the company. The findings suggest that the expanding retails sector and the favourable government policies led to the expansion of Tesco in South Korea. Tesco was well suited for its expansion because of the firm’s internal resources including size, experience and expertise. The dissertation concludes that the multi-national or multidomestic approach adopted by the company was underlying success factor that contributed towards the success of Tesco in South Korea. Its multi-domestic or multinational corporate structure and strategy is clearly reflected through its market entry, leadership, business strategies and its growth and expansion strategy. The dissertation also highlights several initiatives undertaken by the company since 2008 that lead to exemplary success and compares it with its competitors’ unsuccessful strategy.

‘South Park’ To Take On Police Violence In New Episode

The national debate on police violence has spread from Ferguson and Baltimore all the way to the small town of South Park, Colorado.

On this Wednesday’s episode of long-running animated series “South Park,” the town’s residents decide to abolish the police because they’re fed up with people who “impose their authority on the underprivileged.” Given the Comedy Central show’s history of iconoclasm, and its focus in Season 19 on political correctness, we’re gonna go ahead and guess that it doesn’t end well.

Here’s a clip from the episode, in which one of the town’s police officers defends his kind, saying that “not all cops are racist, trigger-happy assholes.”

“South Park,” which was created by college friends Trey Stone and Matt Parker, has a long and storied history of tackling controversial topics. Many of its most inflammatory episodes have focused on religious figures like Muhammad to the Virgin Mary.

Back-to-Back Fashion Weeks in South Africa

And then there were two.
Less than a month before it was scheduled to take place, Africa Fashion Week was abruptly canceled. The event’s owner, African Fashion International, issued a statement confirming that “Africa Fashion Week, scheduled to take place from November 4 to 7, 2015, will no longer take place in its current format. In its place, AFI plans to convene leading stakeholders on the continent to the first Africa Fashion Forum.”
No reason was given for the development, which AFI positioned as “a new strategic direction.” The South African fashion industry was abuzz with speculation. Perhaps it was because Mercedes Benz, which had sponsored previous Africa Fashion Weeks, was no longer a sponsor, although it remained the headline sponsor for AFI’s two other properties, MBFW Johannesburg and MBFW Cape Town, industry officials said. Others believed that with the South African Fashion Week taking place from Oct. 22 to 26, followed immediately by Lagos Fashion and Design Week from Oct. 28 to 31, African designers might have preferred to show at Lagos, which has proven to be a successful platform, attracting a pan-African audience, not to mention more international media and buyers, than Africa Fashion Week.
AFI declined further comment, except to

South Coast Plaza Eyes Men’s Market With Debut Look Book

CUSTOM APPROACH: South Coast Plaza is showing some love to the male shopper.
The Orange County shopping center this evening will host a private event at the Berluti store to celebrate South Coast’s first men’s fall marketing book.
It’s a strategic move for the center as more chatter builds around men’s and the HENRYs consumer — high-earnings, not rich yet shoppers — or male Millennials.
“With the international growth in the men’s wear category, we wanted to shine the spotlight on our unparalleled collection of men’s boutiques, which represent some of the world’s most coveted names, from fashion-forward brands to esteemed sartorial leaders,” said South Coast executive director of marketing Debra Gunn Downing in a statement.
The book includes looks from Berluti, Boss, Burberry, Dolce & Gabbana, Salvatore Ferragamo, Giorgio Armani, Louis Vuitton, Oliver Peoples and Ralph Lauren.
South Coast counts more than 70 boutiques that sell men’s apparel or accessories and both new and existing tenants have taken more notice of the male customer.
COS, expected to open in October, and Massimo Dutti, slated for a November opening, will both carry men’s.
Roberto Cavalli relocated this year and added men’s when it reopened its doors. Dolce & Gabbana opened at South Coast Plaza, also earlier this

Consumption, Media And Culture In South Africa: Perspectives On Freedom And The Public

Consumption, Media And Culture In South Africa: Perspectives On Freedom And The Public

This book is the first of its kind to bring together a collection of critical scholarly work on consumer culture in South Africa, exploring the cultural, political, economic, and social aspects of consumption in post-Apartheid society. From sushi and Japanese diplomacy to Queen Sophie''s writhing gown, from middle class Sowetan golfers to an indebted working class citizenry, from wedding websites to wedding nostalgia, from the liberation of consuming to the low wage labour of selling, the chapters in this book demonstrate a variety of themes, showing that to start with consumption, rather than ending with it, allows for new insights into long-standing areas of social research. By mapping, exploring and theorizing the diverse aspects of consumption and consumer culture, the volume collectively works towards a fresh set of empirically rooted conceptual commentaries on the politics, economics, and social dynamics of modern South Africa. This effort, in turn, can serve as a foundation for thinking less parochially about neoliberal power and consumer culture. On a global scale, studying consumption in South Africa matters because in some ways the country serves as a microcosm for global patterns of income inequality, race-based economic oppression, and hopes for the material betterment of life. By exploring what consumption means on the ''local'' scale in South Africa, the possibility arises to trace new global links and dissonances. This book was originally published as a special issue ofCritical Arts.

Youth and Higher Education in Africa. The Cases of Cameroon, South Africa, Eritrea and Zimbabwe

Youth and Higher Education in Africa. The Cases of Cameroon, South Africa, Eritrea and Zimbabwe

Student activism in Africa, at least since the early 1990s, has been preoccupied with popular struggles for democracy in both their respective countries and institutions of higher learning. The changing socio-economic and political conditions in many African countries, characterized by the decline in economic growth and the introduction of multi-party politics, among several other factors, have had different impact on students and student political organizations in African universities. This book recounts the responses of students to these changes in their attempt to negotiate better living and studying conditions. The four case studies contained in the book – Cameroon, South Africa, Zimbabwe and Eritrea – clearly reveal the very important aspects of the situation in which African students find themselves in many countries, and underscores the need to understand the character and development of higher education on the continent. Ministries of Higher Education, Vice Chancellors, Deans of Students, Student Unions and parents will find this book very useful in terms of understanding the tensions that often arise at institutions of higher learning and why solutions seem to be elusive.

Women and Gender in the New South: 1865 – 1945

Women and Gender in the New South: 1865 – 1945

In every age and in every culture there have been women who challenged the prevailing gender prescriptions and struck a nerve, resulting in waves of either change or repression. In Women and Gender in the New South, Elizabeth Hayes Turner draws on a multiplicity of sources—part of the great outpouring of works in the field of women’s history that has emerged in the past 40 years—to bring together in one volume the history of conservative, moderate, and even radical women’s groups. The book demonstrates how women and men from different racial and economic backgrounds not only weathered but also shaped the political and cultural landscape of the New South. Employing women''s history, gender analysis, and race and class studies, Women and Gender in the New South shapes this accumulated scholarship into an interpretative overlay that takes southern women and men from the ravages of one war to the opportunities of another.

Photographer Carolyn L. Sherer Documents ‘Living in Limbo: Lesbian Families in the Deep South’

Carolyn L. Sherer began photographing lesbians and their families in Birmingham, Alabama, in 2011.

Still one year before President Barack Obama even announced his support for same-sex marriage, the risks for these queers in the south — which could (and still can) range from intimidation to physical violence — were high. In fact, many of the subjects chose not to reveal their faces in Sherer’s photos.

Now, “Living in Limbo: Lesbian Families in the Deep South” has become an important historical document that shows the public LGBT families exist and thrive in all parts of America — even its most conservative pockets.

The Huffington Post spoke with Sherer this week about the legacy of the project and what she was trying to accomplish by bringing visibility to these experiences. Check out photos from “Living in Limbo: Lesbian Families in the Deep South” along with Sherer’s interview below.

What was your overarching vision for this “Lesbians Living In The Deep South”?
In terms of content, my work is about authenticity and a search for common humanity in marginalized groups. I am interested in exploring issues of identity and always work in series to document individual stories to create a composite portrait of a community.

In this case, a specific incident inspired me to put a face on my previously invisible lesbian community in Birmingham, Alabama. When my friend was keeping vigil by her partner’s hospital deathbed, the brother of her beloved locked Kay out of their home. The police had to let her into the house to get a change of clothes to wear to the funeral. Worse, at the memorial service their close heterosexual friends said they did not know the couple was gay — or that gay people could be treated that way in Alabama. I realized that the distinctly southern “don’t’ ask, don’t tell” culture had to end.

Conceptually, I fretted about how to make the work in a way that the participants could feel safe. I departed from my tradition of environmental portraits to make studio shots. Yes, the format provides the viewer the opportunity to focus on intimacy and relationships, but it was also a practical decision in terms of protecting participant privacy. It’s important to understand that this work was created in 2011 in a deeply conservative southern state. I did not know the potential for consequences, and at the time it felt quite risky to many of the women I approached. Each family decided to face the camera or not, and whether to include any children in the family. They were given complete control of their environment, choosing what to wear and how to stand. While being photographed, participants were asked to focus on their feelings about three words delivered in series: Lesbian, Pride and Prejudice.

Who are the individuals featured in these photographs?
40 lesbian families with diverse racial and socioeconomic backgrounds — all with roots in the Birmingham, Alabama area. The act of participation in most cases was a decision to come out of the closet — at least in more public circles.

It was my coming out story too.

Did these families have any hesitation or worries about taking part in this series?
Initially, yes, many of my friends refused to participate due to fear of consequences. After the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute (BCRI) agreed to show the work and I got public endorsements from the Birmingham Museum of Art and Southern Poverty Law Center, things loosened up considerably. The value of the early support of BCRI can’t be underestimated. Remarkably, this work was already on the walls in 2012 when President Obama and the NAACP endorsed gay marriage. It attracted nearly 17,000 visitors in a two-month run and prompted much private and public dialogue about who is entitled to equality.

Why is visibility such as this important for LGBT people living in the south?
The Birmingham Civil Rights Institute is hosting travel of “Living in Limbo: Lesbian Families in the Deep South” as part of its mission to advocate for human and civil rights. In spite of the fact that they live in the heart of the Civil Rights Movement, the LGBTQ community in Alabama lacks a single law protecting them from discrimination. People do still lose jobs and child custody because of their sexual or gender identity. I hope that individuals living in liberal areas of the country can remain aware of the implications of making equality a state’s rights issue.

I want the viewer to feel a quiet intimacy, and wonder about the reality of the lives of the people they see.

Voltage Valet Grounded Electrical Adaptor for use in South Africa and parts of India

Voltage Valet Grounded Electrical Adaptor for use in South Africa and parts of India

PackingLight.com’s job is to outfit the traveler with all of the travel essentials one needs to venture anywhere. Our selection of Voltage Valet Grounded Adaptors allow you to connect your grounded three pin appliance into the outlets of the world. The Voltage Valet GUE plug modifies grounded appliances to fit the electrical outlets found in the South Africa and within some establishments in India (15 amp sockets). The question you may have is: do I need a grounded adaptor? The answer is if your North American appliance has two flat blades and one round pin, your appliance is grounded and you need one of our grounded adaptors. In addition, you need to check your appliances to see if they are dual voltage and capable of working on 240 voltage overseas. We urge visitors to link to our Foreign Electrical page to get more in-depth information on when you need adaptors and converters for travel. Most often we find our customers do not need converters/transformers to bring down the 240 voltage found in foreign countries. The reason is they possess appliances that are already dual voltage with the capability to use anywhere without using converters. That is correct, people with most battery chargers and small travel appliances can check their appliance and discover their appliance has a rating specification that reads “100/240V”–indicating that the appliance is dual voltage and can work on the high 240 voltage abroad. So please check your chargers for MP3 players, digital cameras, razors, camcorders, cell phones, etc. and look for yourself. In addition, check your compact, folding hair dryers, travel curling irons and straighteners, travel steamers, irons, and coffee makers. If they’re built specifically for travel and/or purchased from PackingLight.com, we can save you the cost of buying a converter when you probably don’t need it!NOTE: Some countries use more than one type of outlet and you should carry the appropriate adaptor for each outlet listed. Again, adaptor plugs DO NOT convert electricity – they simply modify foreign outlets. To determine the adaptor plug you need see our link to Voltage Valet’s country list in the Electricity Guide section. http://www.voltagevalet.com/elec_guide.htmlIf you have any further questions call us on our toll free number: 1-800-349-0525. French Dirt: The Story of a Garden in the South of France

French Dirt: The Story of a Garden in the South of France

A story about dirt-and about sun, water, work, elation, and defeat. And about the sublime pleasure of having a little piece of French land all to oneself to till. Richard Goodman saw the ad in the paper: “SOUTHERN FRANCE: Stone house in Village near Nimes/Avignon/Uzes. 4 BR, 2 baths, fireplace, books, desk, bikes. Perfect for writing, painting, exploring & experiencing la France profonde. 0 mo. plus utilities.” And, with his girlfriend, he left New York City to spend a year in Southern France. The village was small-no shops, no gas station, no post office, only a café and a school. St. Sebastien de Caisson was home to farmers and vintners. Every evening Goodman watched the villagers congregate and longed to be a part of their camaraderie. But they weren’t interested in him: he was just another American, come to visit and soon to leave. So Goodman laced up his work boots and ventured out into the vineyards to work among them. He met them first as a hired worker, and then as a farmer of his own small plot of land. French Dirt is a love story between a man and his garden. It’s about plowing, planting, watering, and tending. It’s about cabbage, tomatoes, parsley, and eggplant. Most of all, it’s about the growing friendship between an American outsider and a close-knit community of French farmers. “There’s a genuine sweetness about the way the cucumbers and tomatoes bridge the divide of nationality.”-The New York Times Book Review “One of the most charming, perceptive and subtle books ever written about the French by an American.”-San Francisco Chronicle

To Dream of Pigs: Travels in South and North Korea

The scariest place on earth.’ So said President Bill Clinton on his visit to the no-man’s land between South and North Korea. The minefields and barbed wire mark the jagged edge of world peace. If the world is to see a nuclear war, Korea is the likely flashpoint. The contrast between the two Koreas – the dynamism of the South confronting the oppression of the North – could not be more stark. Yet, as the author reveals, Koreans from both sides exhibit similarities of thought and perception. Both, for example, believe that to dream of pigs is to wake up rich. South Shore 3360027 Logik Collection Dresser Pure White

This stylish dresser is trendy, functional and well suited to modern needs. Youll love the contemporary look of the recessed kick plate and the choice of two different sets of plastic handles (red or clear). About South Shore We manufacture affordable furniture for the North American market and we share our passion and tips with the consumers so they can create the decor that suits their way of life. A recognized leader in North American furniture manufacturing industry for three generations, the enterprise now relies on a team of over 700 employees in three factories, 2 in Quebec and one in Mexico. History of South Shore In 1940 Eugene Laflamme established South Shore Furniture by buying a bankrupt wooden toy manufacturing business previously owned by Pierre and Jean de Ste-Croix-de-Lotbiniere. Understanding the seasonal nature of the toy business, South Shore diversified production to include kitchen tables and chairs. The factory was rebuilt on the original site in 1941 and again in 1951 after it was damaged by fire. When the wooden furniture market suffered with the appearance of Chrome furniture in 1952, South Shore expanded its product range to include bedroom furnishings. In 1970 Guy Laflamme succeeded his father as managing director for South Shore Furniture. During this period of time the company expanded its production by incorporating Morrissette et freres in Laurierville. Then in 1978, it was J.W. Kilgour Ltd. of Coaticook that became another South ShoreTM factory. Over the years all 3 factories have undergone several phases of investment and expansion to make South Shore Furniture what it is today. In 1986, Jean Laflamme joined the company and in 1999 Guy Laflamme designated him President while he maintained the position of President of the Board of Directors. Mr. Jean Laflamme represents the third generation at the head of South Shore Furniture. In 2010, it was the 70th anniversary of the company and also the year the Mexican plant was acquir

Listen To ‘South Park’s Fake Lorde Song, ‘Push (Feeling Good On A Wednesday),’ In Full

“South Park” has released the full fake Lorde song, “Push (Feeling Good On A Wednesday),” from the recent episode in which it was revealed that Lorde is actually character Randy Marsh in disguise. Lorde expressed her love for the caricature, praising the episode’s humor and “message of transgender acceptance.” While the song was recorded by Sia, that didn’t stop Lorde from taking a crack at the chorus herself. Further, “South Park” is giving the song away for free, so now there’s nothing stopping us from singing, “Now we push, push to stand together / Because I am Lorde, ya ya ya,” everywhere at every moment.

“Reunion,” South Coast Repertory, Costa Mesa

Three chums meet up in a motel room after their 25th high school reunion. It’s the same room they had 25 years ago, after graduation. There’s ritual, there’s anticipation, and there’s the chance to compare how much each has moved on. Two have left town. One stayed put. One has twin sons and two-week-old daughter. One is divorced, with a son. And one, unmarried, still lives in his parents’ house. Is this an occasion to catch up, reminisce, and relive glory days? Not even remotely. Gregory S. Moss’ “Reunion,” directed by Adrienne Campbell-Holt for South Coast Repertory, is a corker of a story that examines, at times in excruciating detail, the complex relationships of boys who became men who, for one night, became boys again.

Set in a Boston suburb motel room, the production brims with id and angst, with traces of testosterone thrown in for good measure. To describe it, it’s funny. The three friends party like it’s 1989. They trash a motel room like rock royalty. And they talk smack about each other and about high school girls. Their zingers become more lethal. To describe it, though, it’s powerful and, at times, scary. Campbell-Holt turns Moss’ story into a true confessions catharsis that won’t provide much relief for Peter (Kevin Berntson), Max (Michael Gladis), and Mitch (Tim Cummings), but will certainly give us a lot to think about.

The story begins purposefully awkward. It takes awhile for the three to open up. It’s been a quarter century, after all. Of course, alcohol, pot, and boom box rock-and-roll provide the social lubricants, just as it did in high school. Then it becomes surreal.

Once things get rolling (rocking too, for that matter), the revelations are startling, to put it mildly. So is the acting. The three actors managed to convincingly switch back and forth at will between teenagers and middle-aged adults, with all the psychoses and hang ups of both age groups.

At first Berntson’s Peter is gung ho and eager, poised if not gawky. He’s the only one of the three who tried to stay in contact. By the end you understand why. You feel he set up the reunion to show his two friends how much he’s matured since high school. Of course, when all three revert to form, he becomes the toy nerd for the other two (stuffed in a mattress; taped to a door). Even that doesn’t get him to leave. No, that’s because of some intelligence he gleans, intelligence that shows that things haven’t changed much since high school.

Gladis’ Max and Cummings’ Mitch sit on a keg of dynamite. It’s not because of what Max had done to his infant son or because Mitch never moved on emotionally after high school. When you learn their secret, you understand how things not addressed at the time or even later, in therapy, continue to simmer and impact subsequent events. Untreated, as happens here, they boil over.

Performances are 7:45pm, Tuesday through Saturday, 2pm, Saturday and Sunday. The show runs until March 30. Tickets are $ 22 – $ 62. The Theatre is located at 655 Town Center Drive, Costa Mesa, CA 92626. For more information call (714) 708-5555 or visit www.scr.org.

The Korean Way in Business: Understanding and Dealing with the South Koreans in Business

South Korean companies and technology have suddenly conquered the world. Samsung, Hyundai and LG are industry leaders and the global brands. Korean culture in the form of K-Pop music videos and “Korean Wave” films and TV dramas are watched everywhere from Tel Aviv to Singapore to Rio. Korean gourmet food trucks ply the streets of New York and LA, and kimchi has found a place on the shelves of well-stocked supermarkets around the world. With just a fraction of Japan’s land area, less than half its population, and no natural resources–how have Korean companies managed to conquer the world in such a short period of time? What is the “secret sauce” of Korean business practices and companies that makes them so successful? To find out, readers need more than statistics and company profiles. Learning the basics about Korean culture, about Korean social etiquette and Korean business culture, will enable you to understand for the first time how Koreans think and why they work so effectively to achieve their goals. This understanding will enhance your own effectiveness in doing business with Koreans, or in competing with them–whether in Korea or elsewhere. “The Korean Way in Business” is a must-read for business professionals who wish to know the secrets underlying the commercial practices and business success of modern-day Koreans.

Rashad Charjuan Owens, Suspect In Deadly South By Southwest Crash, Charged With Murder

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — The drunken-driving suspect who police say killed two people after he smashed his car through a street barricade at the South By Southwest festival did not use his brakes and even accelerated as he approached crowds, according to an arrest warrant released Friday.

Rashad Charjuan Owens was charged with one count of capital murder, though additional charges can be added later. Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo has said Owens intentionally steered toward pedestrians early Thursday in hopes of escaping an officer who was trying to pull him over. Acevedo has suggested Owens could face two capital murder charges and as many as 23 counts of aggravated assault with a vehicle. The 21-year-old from Killeen, about 70 miles north of Austin, remains in police custody after a district court judge set his bail at $ 3 million. Jail records did not list an attorney for him.

According to the arrest warrant, Owens told police that he “got scared” when he saw police lights behind him around 12:30 a.m. Thursday because outstanding warrants meant he could go to prison for five years. Owens told police he’s facing old kidnapping warrants issued as part of a custody battle over his daughter.

A breath test indicated Owens’ blood-alcohol content was .114, exceeding the legal limit of .08, the arrest warrant released Friday says.

The officer who tried to stop Owens was looking for suspected drunken drivers when he spotted a 2012 gray Honda Civic that didn’t have its headlights turned on, the arrest warrant says. Owens then made a turn from a middle lane and “would have caused a crash” with the police cruiser had the officer not turned to avoid it, according to the warrant.

Investigators say Owens then cut through a gas station and sped the wrong way down a one-way street before crashing through police barriers blocking a street closed for South By Southwest festivities — forcing another police officer manning the roadblock on foot to dive out of the way.

Police say Owens then plowed into a crowd of concertgoers, hitting and killing a man from the Netherlands on a bicycle and an Austin woman on a moped. Investigators say he eventually crashed into a taxi and parked van and tried to run before police subdued him with a stun gun.

The warrant says a video from the police unit giving chase “shows the Honda accelerating into crowds, not simply crowded areas but crowds of people who are hit by the car and flung into the air.” It adds that Owens drove “for almost three city blocks, accelerating into crowds and does not use his brakes, as in the video there are no brake lights visible from the rear of the Honda.”

Court records indicate that Owens pleaded guilty to driving under the influence in Fairbanks, Alaska, in October 2011, when he was 19. He also was charged with leaving the scene of an accident, but that was later dismissed.

Owens also faced 2012 charges in Alaska of criminal mischief, and a warrant was issued for him after he failed to appear in court. In 2010, meanwhile, he was arrested in Texas by Killeen Independent School District police for criminal trespassing and pleaded guilty.

Young Heroes: Of the North and South

Young Heroes: Of the North and South

When people read about the Civil War, it is often stories about daring soldiers in battle. But soldiers were not the only ones involved in the war. In every town and city, on every farm and in every school, children played a role in the conflict. Whether Union or Confederate, young people cheered their soldiers in the army with letters from home. They took care of the family homes and farms while fathers and brothers were away in battle. And all children suffered from the difficulties and the uncertainties of war, just as grownups did. "Young Heroes of the North and South tells the story of the many brave and courageous children who participated in the Civil War — from the home front and on the battlefield. Discover how young people helped in the war effort by raising money for food and medical supplies. Explore the ways children assisted on farms, lifted spirits by performing in plays, and helped nurse wounded soldiers. Meet young people who served as spies and marched into battle as drummer boys and soldiers.

Hollywood North Still Draws Films From Down South

In the old days, filmmakers flocked to Hollywood for its abundant sunshine, beautiful people and sandy beaches. But today a new filmmaking diaspora is spreading across the globe to places like Vancouver, London and Wellington, New Zealand.

Fueled by politicians doling out generous tax breaks, filmmaking talent is migrating to where the money is. The result is an incentives arms race that pits California against governments around the world and allows powerful studios — with hundreds of millions of dollars at their disposal — to cherry-pick the best deals.

The most recent iteration of the phenomenon came earlier this month when James Cameron announced plans to shoot and produce the next three “Avatar” sequels largely in New Zealand. What Cameron gets out of the deal is a 25 per cent rebate on production costs, as long as his company spends at least $ 413 million on the three films.

“There’s no place in the world that we could make these sequels more cost effectively,'” says producer Jon Landau. It is neither the archipelago’s volcanoes nor its glaciers that are attractive, because the “Avatar” movies will be shot indoors. Sure, Peter Jackson’s award-winning special effects infrastructure is there, but the deciding factor was the money. “We looked at other places,” says Landau. But in the end, “it was this rebate.”

In exchange, the local economy will benefit hugely, Landau says, comparing the ripple effect to the boost that comes from new home construction. “We’re doing lumber, we’re catering for hundreds of people a day. We’re housing people in hotels. We’re going to a stationery store and tripling their business in a year.”

The deal was “the best Christmas present we could have possibly hoped for,” says Alex Lee, an Auckland, New Zealand-based entertainment lawyer. The news is especially welcome because the local screen industry is facing a potential drought: The Starz pay TV series “Spartacus” finished this year and Peter Jackson’s “The Hobbit” trilogy is set to wrap next year. Thanks to the “Avatar” sequels, the 1,100 workers at Weta Digital Ltd., the ground-breaking digital effects house Jackson co-founded in 1993, can keep plugging away through 2018.

“It would have been a real shame if we had lost any of that talent and they had to move to follow the films,” says Wellington Mayor Celia Wade-Brown.

Driving the trend are powerful global forces squeezing the entertainment industry. Falling DVD sales are putting pressure on movie-making budgets, while the demand for ever-more-amazing special effects grows. The spread of technology and skills around the world is creating a huge number of special effects suppliers some using cheaper labour than can be found in Hollywood.

Government largesse has helped create mini-moguldoms in Vancouver, Montreal, London, New York and Wellington, all of which are aggressively one-upping each other to become the next new hotbed of activity. As the work spreads, branch offices of visual effects companies have opened up in new locations. Even though digital work is borderless, workers must live and be paid locally to generate the income taxes and spending that governments seek.

The tax incentives race is destined to accelerate next year. State incentives in California — home to “Star Wars” pioneer Industrial Light & Magic — are too small to accommodate big-budget movies. Democratic Assembly member Raul Bocanegra is preparing a bill to expand their scope, but it could take months to get through committees, says his chief of staff, Ben Golombek.

And the U.S. federal incentive, an arguably difficult-to-use tax deduction of up to $ 20 million per film or TV episode, is set to expire at the end of 2013.

“Once our federal incentive ends in two weeks, you’re going to have a lot of people who are going to go elsewhere,” says Hal “Corky” Kessler, a tax incentives lawyer with Chicago-based Deutsch, Levy & Engel.

Industry business leaders say they’re simply following the money.

“This is no different than any other multinational business,” says Sir William Sargent, co-founder and CEO of Framestore, a London-based special effects business that worked on likely Oscar-contender, “Gravity,” and has offices in Montreal, New York and Los Angeles. “We’re just going to where our customers are.”

Even if the U.S. moves to counteract growing incentives overseas, the efforts won’t prevent another jurisdiction from offering a bigger break.

Joseph Chianese, executive vice-president at consulting company EP Financial Solutions, says the competition to offer attractive incentives is intense. More than 30 countries and 44 U.S. states now offer tax breaks to filmmakers.

The mix “changes daily, but it’s not going away,” Chianese says. :We have now trained a generation of filmmakers and TV makers that production doesn’t have to happen here anymore.”

Burt Waikiki Brings Hawaii Lifestyle To South Africa… Kind Of

What do you get when you combine viral online marketing with Hawaii’s laid back lifestyle? Apparently, Burt Waikiki.

Burt is a long-haired, speedo-clad, womanizing personal trainer from the Hawaii island of Kauai whose mission is to share his secret to balancing mind, body and soul by flirting with women and lifting weights made of coconuts. Oh, and apparently he saves puppies, which makes sense because why not?

bw

Also known as “The Guru of Goodness,” Burt is the star of a new viral marketing campaign launched by digital agency McCann and Kauai restaurants — a chain of Hawaii-inspired health food restaurants in South Africa.

The campaign’s purpose is to introduce the world to the “Kauai lifestyle.” This includes “healthy eating, being active and having time to chill,” according to Kauai’s marketing manager Leanne Jefferies.

“Even though the islands are far away, there is no excuse for us not to live by these principals in South Africa,” Jefferies told AdLip.com. “Our brand heritage is fun, informal and laid back. So we wanted to do a fun campaign.”

burtwaikiki

While the campaign’s efforts aim at promoting the island lifestyle, it’s clear that the videos are mostly for comedy rather than accuracy. Kauai’s residents do have a very strong voice when it comes to community health and the Aloha State actually does embrace yoga, but not everyone has a parachute to casually land on the beach or a “palace” on the sand with fake flower leis strewn about.

We’re also pretty sure that “scubaerobics” isn’t really a thing.

The original concept for Kauai restaurants began 17 years ago when the founders, originally from California, experienced life on the island of Kauai. Or, as they put it, “discovered the succulent fruits of this veritable Garden of Eden.”

What still remains unclear, however, is why the laid back, zen-seeking guru, Burt Waikiki, is named after one of Hawaii’s busiest and crowded cities, which isn’t even on the island of Kauai.
