Ampersand Collective Brings Online Men’s Brands Into Retail Space

Some digitally native men’s brands have come together in a brick-and-mortar play for the holiday season.
Called Ampersand Collective, the 10-day pop-up on New York’s Lower East Side will feature gifts for guys from Stuart & Lau, a luggage and accessories brand; men’s outerwear from North & Mark; dress shoes from Wolf & Shepherd; hats and other haberdashery items from BM Franklin; grooming products from Fulton & Roark; timepieces from The 5th; socks and underwear from Nice Laundry, and bikes from Tokyobike.
The idea for the shop was hatched by Stuart & Lau and North & Mark as a way to bring their brands to a different audience.

“I am proud to have brought together some of the best emerging men’s and gear brands together for this short-term residency,” said Matt Stuart, founder of Stuart & Lau. “As mostly digital native brands, this pop-up brings us off-line and offers the opportunity to showcase the brands in a physical location.”
Steve Cho, founder of North & Mark, added: “It’s very exciting to have a physical place where people can come to and try products they normally could only get online. Even in the digital age, people still need to touch and feel products before they purchase. The brands

Sarah Brightman Returns from Space Training for New Album and Tour: ‘I Needed to Earth Myself’

Sarah Brightman is making an astronomical landing with her fifteenth studio album Hymn.

After spending months in Russia training for a trip to outer space that she postponed in 2015, Brightman, 58, opened up to PEOPLE exclusively about the creation of her newest album and the planning stages of her tour.

“I needed to earth myself,” says the soprano singer. “I said I would like to do an album of songs which are full of light, full of hope. Songs that remind me of when I felt safe and familiar with things in my childhood when I sang in my church.”

“If I don’t use and I don’t convey my feelings through it, I feel depleted,” she added. “I don’t function very well and that’s the beauty of having a gift like a voice. You sort of know what to do. You know what direction to take, you know that you want to communicate through it.”

Brightman, who shot to fame after star-turning roles on Broadway musicals Cats and Phantom of the Opera, linked up with producer Frank Peterson for the album-creating process. What came out of two-and-a-half years of planning and recording was the dynamic, choir-filled album, Hymn, out on Nov. 9.

“ is about looking into the good in things because I do believe that good prevails always,” she said, adding that the word “positivity” would describe her album.

“I did experience huge amounts when I was in the space program that actually how precious everything really is on this beautiful planet and how precious that is,” she added.

Now, the “Time to Say Goodbye” vocalist is ready to take Hymn on the road later this fall for a tour that’s “going to be quite beautiful.”

“I have a lot of energy. I tend to before I go on these tours, I become more energetic,” she says. “You create a power for yourself which will protect you because when you go on tour you’re dealing with the hardship of jet lag and moving around continually.”

The “Angel of Music” singer says her set on tour will be divided into two halves. The first will feature a more retrospective aspect to Brightman’s music, which will look like “somebody who is going to the ballet or the opera.” The second will be a bit more modern and feature most of the songs off Hymn.

“I’m wearing all these amazing runway gowns, which I’ve made a little more theatrical by adding things to them. Stones, crystals, all sorts of stuff,” she says. “I’ve got a big choir behind me. Up really high. I’ve got an orchestra on one side, a band on the other side and myself in the middle.”

Brightman’s album is filled with collaborations with artists like French tenor Vincent Niclo on single “Sogni” and Japanese composer Yoshiki on the emotional “Miracle.”

“ is a really interesting guy and we got along very well,” she said. “It was a very interesting collaboration with Japan’s most famous rockstar writing a beautiful contemporary classical piece.”

Along with the collaborations, Brightman’s album jumps from classical and cinematic music to pop rhythms in a cohesive album threaded by its spiritual nature. The album also takes fans back to one of her most famous classics “Time to Say Goodbye” with Andrea Bocelli, which she recreates in a touching English rendition.

“I wrote the lyrics for it but they were very much inspired from the original Italian lyrics when translated,” she said. “It’s quite a grand song, it’s almost like an opera song, but I wanted to do this in a very intimate way.”

Fans can purchase tickets for “Hymn: Sarah Brightman in Concert” through her website.

Movers and Shakers in the Men’s E-commerce Space

Don’t tell these companies that men don’t shop online.
There are now a slew of men’s wear-focused e-tailers offering everything from designer clothing to socks, underwear to streetwear. While some of these businesses have become household names and others are still flying under the radar, all of them have managed to make their mark. They’ve also attracted some big bucks from outside investors, a key indicator that they’re doing something right.
Here, a closer look at some of the major players and their businesses.
Black Tux
Primary business: Tuxedo and suit rentals
Backstory: The Los Angeles-based company was founded in 2013 by longtime friends Andrew Blackmon and Patrick Coyne, who saw an opportunity to improve the traditional tuxedo and suit rental process. Often referred to as the Rent the Runway for guys, the Black Tux has raised $ 60 million in funding since it started, the most recent round coming in March when TZP Group — along with Stripes Group, Menlo Ventures and Raine Ventures — came through with $ 30 million the company said it would use to add more warehouse space. A facility opened in Pennsylvania earlier this year.
Reach: In addition to its own e-commerce site and six of its own showrooms, the company

Rowing Blazers to Open Shop in Former Odin Space

Rowing Blazers is going the retail route.
The preppy brand of vintage-inspired sport coats, button-down shirts and ties will open a 2,500-square-foot store at 221 Centre Street in Manhattan on June 15. The space formerly housed the Odin store.
Rowing Blazers was created last year by Jack Carlson, a former coxswain on the U.S. national rowing team who also holds a Ph.D. in archaeology from Oxford University (a center of rowing worldwide), and is the author of “A Humorous Guide to Heraldry” and “Rowing Blazers,” a coffee-table tome about the “authentic striped, piped, trimmed and badged” jackets worn by oarsman around the world.
Since its debut, the collection of boldly patterned and brightly colored jackets has caught the attention of Millennial customers, and the brand had a successful partnership with J. Crew on a limited-edition capsule of rugby shirts.
In addition, a pop-up that the brand operated on Rivington Street last fall was so successful Carlson believes it’s the right time to take a bigger plunge into the brick-and-mortar world.
“When we started, the idea was to be e-commerce exclusively and maybe add wholesale selectively,” he said. Rowing Blazers does wholesale its line to Asian retailers Beams, United Arrows, Journal Standard and others.

They include Bamford Watch Department, Ralph Lauren’s Double RL, Orange County leather goods maker Esquivel, Levi’s, L.A. ready-to-wear brand Libertine, leather jackets from LTH JKT, gender-neutral line Seeker, Brooklyn women’s ready-to-wear label Suzanne Rae and Unfortunate Portrait T-shirts bearing the art of Los Angeles illustrator Max Dower.
Those companies will absorb anywhere from 50 to 600 square feet under Fred Segal’s 22,000-square-foot roof. The retailer also confirmed all shops-in-shops will open along with store in mid-September.
The latest round of brands to join the slate announced in May includes The Highline, Atelier & Repairs, CAP Beauty, a CFDA store, Eggy, Flower Girl Los Angeles, Framed Ewe Optical, Replika Vintage and The Pancake Epidemic.
Designers to be included in the CFDA store — the first on the West Coast — are expected to be revealed closer to the opening.
The rest of the Fred Segal space will be filled out

Karl Lagerfeld Interviews French Astronaut in Space

ROCKET MAN: Karl Lagerfeld has revealed the real inspiration behind his space-themed show for Chanel in March: French astronaut Thomas Pesquet, who has kept the nation in thrall with his regular reports from the International Space Station since November.
The designer hooked up with the cosmonaut for a remote interview broadcast on French radio France Info on Saturday, in which he asked him everything from what he eats, how he washes and how often he works out.
“I admire [him]. In fact, he has even inspired fashion since I was indirectly inspired not only by where he is, but also by his personality, because I think he is more charismatic than his predecessors,” Lagerfeld said.
The designer installed a giant rocket (35 meters/115 feet high) inside the Grand Palais in Paris for his spectacular fall ready-to-wear display.
“I am very flattered that Karl Lagerfeld draws inspiration from space for his collections,” Pesquet said. “Thankfully he did not draw inspiration from astronauts’ outfits, because obviously here, we tend to wear European Space Agency polo shirts and pants with Velcro fastenings, which is not that great.
“But it’s good. It means space makes people dream, that people are interested in exploration and science, and that’s a good

Dreams on Air Offers Designers Retail Space, Marketing and Incubator

FLOATING A NEW IDEA: For the designers housed at Dreams on Air, the set-up offers the double-barreled approach of retail upstairs and a public relations showroom downstairs.
Apparel, jewelry, handbags, shoes and sunglasses are featured on the 2,500-square-foot first floor of 120 Wooster Street in Manhattan, and one level below, samples from the featured designers are ready for editors, stylists and bloggers. The concept was created by Alise Trautmane, a The New School’s Parsons School of Design graduate and former Designer of the Year in Latvia for her Narciss label, and Sai Kong, who also created a brand. The duo also have marketing and retail experience, which they are putting to use for 25 New York-based emerging designers.
Shoppers can find labels such as Alexandra Nam, Artemis Design Co., Echtego, Eric Javits, Faces, Gwen Salakaia, Hi June Parker, Jordan Matériel, Pirosmani, PÓAR, Saku, Sankt, Sarah Swann, Sarara Couture and S/H Koh. Trautmane said, “Designers share the costs of the rent and the professional staff for retail, [public relations], marketing. Designers keep all the proceeds from items sold minus a small administrative fee. They sell for their retail prices. We do not buy the collections.”

How A Hijab-Friendly Brooklyn Salon Became A Space For Women’s Empowerment

Muslim cosmetologist Huda Quhshi used to lug her supplies around New York City, cutting and coloring women’s hair over sinks in crowded apartments.

But Quhshi’s days of itinerant hairstyling are over. Last month, in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Bay Ridge, the 37-year-old realized her lifelong dream of opening a salon that caters entirely to women. Her salon, Le’Jemalik, has become a kind of sanctuary for women who want to let their hair down in a ladies-only space.

“It’s a place where you can come and feel relaxed, and just have a beautiful experience without worrying that a man is going to walk in,” Quhshi told The Huffington Post.

Le’Jemalik, which means “for your beauty” in Arabic, offers a full range of services, from hairstyling to nails, waxing and makeup. It even sells wedding dresses and offers regular seminars for beauty professionals looking to enhance their skills.

The salon hosted its grand opening on Jan. 29, with hundreds of visitors stopping by to glimpse the space, Quhshi said. It had already attracted a fair amount of media attention, not only as a business run by and for women but as a place where Muslim women, in particular, can feel safe and welcome.

Not all Muslim women cover their hair or wear hijabs. But those who do maintain a commitment to covering in front of men to whom they aren’t related. It’s a tradition upheld by some Orthodox Jewish women, as well.

Some salons have dividers or rooms in the back to accommodate women with these religious requirements. But Quhshi said she wasn’t aware of any other salons in New York City where the entire space is a men-free zone.

Men are allowed in the front waiting area of Le’Jemalik, but the actual service area lies behind a double door that only women may pass through.

Quhshi said the salon has attracted many Muslim and Jewish clients since it opened. But she emphasized that “this space is for all women.”

“I’ve had women from other faiths tell me that they’re so excited about this space, even though they’re not Muslim,” she said. “They’re happy to be able to support a woman-run business and come here just because they want to feel comfortable.”

As a hijab-wearing Muslim woman of Yemeni descent, Quhshi said she hopes she can be an inspiration to other women who may have to overcome bias to achieve their goals.

“I want to help other girls follow their dreams,” she said. “I’m definitely happy to empower other women and make other women feel like I’ve opened doors for them.”

John Glenn’s Importance to the U.S. Space Program — and to the Country Itself

John Glenn died Thursday at the age of 95. One of the founding figures of the U.S. space program and also a long-serving U.S. Senator, Glenn had a profoundly historic and uniquely American life. Let’s take a closer look.

Glenn was born in Cambridge, Ohio, in 1921. He went to elementary and high school in New Concord, Ohio, and attended Muskingum College in the same town, though he didn’t complete his senior year at the school, opting to drop out at 20 and enlist in the U.S. Air Corps after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, according to the New York Times. (The school granted him an honorary degree in 1962.)

Glenn became a U.S. Marine fighter pilot in the South Pacific, flying 59 missions during the World War II and another 90 in Korea. It was during this time he earned the less-than-dignified nickname “Magnet Ass” for his ability to attract enemy fire, but that belies the scope of his service: Glenn was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross on six occasions, among others, according to NASA.

After Korea, Glenn joined the U.S. Navy’s Test Pilot School, graduating in 1954. He continued to work as a test pilot until 1959, being awarded his fifth Distinguished Flying Cross for completing the first supersonic transcontinental flight (code-named Project Bullet) in 1957.

A year later, Glenn was one of seven astronauts selected by the newly formed NASA (whittled down from a pool of 508, per NASA) to become the so-called “Mercury Seven,” America’s first astronauts. (Alan Shepard, Gus Grissom, Scott Carpenter, Wally Schirra, Gordon Cooper and Deke Slayton were the other six members of the group.) Glenn nearly didn’t make the cut: he was close to the cutoff age of 40 and had yet to earn the requisite science degree.

Glenn became the first American to orbit Earth on Feb, 20, 1962, as part of the Mercury-Atlas 6 mission. He was the third American in space and the fifth human being in space. Upon reaching orbit, his words back to NASA were “Zero G, and I feel fine.” He would go onto to circle the globe three times after those words.

“When my flight came up, it was almost as if it was designed by Hollywood for suspense,” Glenn told the Washington Post in 1998. The American space program was “open for the whole world to see” — as opposed to the intensely secretive Soviet program — “so the whole world emoted right along with us.”

The importance of Glenn’s initial mission to the American identity at the time was crucial: the so-called “Space Race” seemed to be a matter of life and death and the unflappable, Midwestern Glenn was seen as the All-American boy to clinch the contest for the U.S.A. His mission was not without trouble, however — it was postponed 10 times, and not only did Glenn have to take manual control of his capsule when the systems went south at one point, but he had to watch his craft’s heat shield burn up upon re-entry and peel off the ship.

NASA officials called his beloved wife Annie (the pair were married from 1943 until Glenn’s death), fearing the worst, but Glenn remained a picture of calm. His pulse never registered above 110 beats per minute during his ascent, the projected minimum and as he passed through the journey’s maximum pressure point, his report was, “Little bumpy up here.” His first words upon emerging from the craft’s splashdown in the Atlantic ocean were, “It was hot in there.”

Glenn returned to Earth an American hero unlike any other. Four million people turned out to his ticker tape parade in New York City; NASA assigned him special personnel solely to handle his mail, the Post noted. The success of the mission essentially paved the way for the continuation of the U.S.’s space program and was a major boon to President John F. Kennedy, who had championed the project, as well as a blow to the perceived dominance of Russia in the space program.

Glenn resigned from NASA in 1964 with the intention of running for the Senate. A concussion and his subsequent recovery postponed his political career until December 1974, when he was elected as a Democratic Senator for his home state of Ohio. Glenn was caught up in the Keating Five scandal of 1989 when he and four other Senators were accused of improperly interfering with a regulatory investigation into the Lincoln Savings and Loan Association in 1987 after the Association’s Chairman, Charles Keating, made contributions of more than $ 1 million to various senators. Glenn and John McCain were the only two of the five to be exonerated of the charges, and in 1992, Glenn made history by becoming the first popularly elected Senator from his state to win four consecutive terms.

Six years later at age 77, Glenn made history again, becoming the oldest person to go into space, aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery’s STS-95 mission. Glenn had lobbied NASA for two years to fly as a “human guinea pig for geriatric studies,” the New York Times reported. He apparently had no idea he was going to fly the mission until being informed he was approved by NASA, he recounted in his memoir. Upon his return from the nine-day mission, he became the 10th — and the most recent — individual to receive multiple-ticker-tape parades in their lifetime.

Glenn was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2012. “On the morning that John Glenn blasted off into space, America stood still,” President Obama said during the presentation ceremony, according to Space.com. “For a half an hour, the phone stopped ringing at Chicago police headquarters. New York subway drivers offered a play-by-play account over the loud speakers. President Kennedy interrupted a breakfast with congressional leaders to join 100 million TV viewers to hear the famous words ‘Godspeed John Glenn.’ ”

“The first American to orbit the Earth,” Obama added, “John Glenn became a hero in every sense of the word.”

Food in the Air and Space

Food in the Air and Space

In the history of cooking, there has been no more challenging environment than those craft in which humans took to the skies. The tale begins with meals aboard balloons and zeppelins, where cooking was accomplished below explosive bags of hydrogen, ending with space station dinners that were cooked thousands of miles below. This book is the first to chart that history worldwide, exploring the intricacies of inflight dining from 1783 to the present day, aboard balloons, zeppelins, land-based aircraft and flying boats, jets, and spacecraft. It charts the ways in which commercial travelers were lured to try flying with the promise of familiar foods, explains the problems of each aerial environment and how chefs, engineers, and flight crew adapted to them, and tells the stories of pioneers in the field. Hygiene and sanitation were often difficult, and cultural norms and religious practices had to be taken into account. The history is surprising and sometimes humorous at times some ridiculous ideas were tried, and airlines offered some strange meals to try to attract passengers. It’s an engrossing story with quite a few twists and turns, and this first book on the subject tells it with a light touch.

Gant Relocates Regent Street Space, Launches New Store Concept

LONDON — After almost seven years at the same address on Regent Street, Gant has crossed the road and moved into a space formerly occupied by Hugo Boss.
The new store, at 184-186 Regent Street, spans 4,449 square feet across two floors and is located between Hamley’s toy store and Kate Spade.
Gant chief executive officer Patrik Nilsson said he prefers the new location, called it the “sunnier side of the street with 60 percent more traffic.”
He also said the new location was a better space, adding that 60 percent of the products stocked in the store had been selected based on research the company had conducted.
The brand has implemented a new store concept, shifting from an “American lifestyle” to a more “cosmopolitan and sophisticated” aesthetic, with plans to roll out the same approach to its other locations globally. The store’s interiors include movable oak furniture and brass fixtures, with the aim of giving it a more contemporary appeal compared with the previous setup, which was fixed.
“We’ve used the oak cut, which is also taken from the history we have,” said chief marketing officer, Brian Grevy.
“But we also wanted to have a space that was smart. Actually the science behind going into this new

Say hello to FemtoSats — the tiny new satellites that could democratize space

First launched in 2003, CubeSats have made quite an impact on space exploration with universities, enthusiasts, and others deploying the small and affordable satellites. Now, a team of researchers at Arizona State University are developing FemtoSats, an even smaller satellite that is easier and less expensive to launch. The FemtoSat, also known as SunCubes, were developed by Professor Jekan Thangavelautham from the Arizona’s School of Earth and Space Exploration. The cubes are amazingly small and light, measuring a mere 3cm and weighing only 35g. These FemtoSats are significantly smaller than their CubeSat counterparts, which are 11cm long and 1.3kg in weight.Related: NASA and Japan just released over 2.95 million thermal satellite photos of Earth, for free The FemtoSats are not only small and easy to deploy, they are also affordable when compared to the CubeSat, which costs up to $ 50,000 to prepare for launch and $ 100,000 to launch into orbit. According to the Arizona State team, each FemtoSat will cost $ 3,000 to deliver into a lower Earth orbit, and, if desired, $ 1,000 to send to the International Space Station. The FemtoSat will be deployed using a CubeSat equipped with a spring that will shoot the FemtoSat out into space. Approximately 27 FemtoSats can be released by a single deployer. This will cut down on launch costs, allowing the FemtoSats to piggyback on existing CubeSat missions. The Arizona researchers hope their FemtoSats will make it possible for the hobbyists, students, and other enthusiasts to explore space. “By reducing the launch cost, it is hoped a wider community of educators, researchers, and hobbyists can develop their own spacecraft,” said the team. “The standard is targeted towards personal, scientific, private, and government payloads.” What would you do with your own personal satellite? Also watch: Raimond de Hullu’s vision for Oas1s green buildings Please enable Javascript to watch this video

Starting on Oct. 1, fans of Jordan and the 1996 sports entertainment classic “Space Jam” can bid on the actual Tune Squad uniform Jordan wore during the making of the movie. Despite there being “signs of wear” and “minor staining” on the uniform, it’ll be available for bidding through online auction house Invaluable via Los Angeles-based auction house Profiles In History.

Invaluable estimates the price to fall between $ 10,000 (the starting bid) and $ 15,000, but in the past, Jordan memorabilia has been auctioned off for upwards of $ 100,000

Think you can afford it?

NASA’s Latest Image Of The International Space Station Is Breathtaking

I spy with my little eye…

Continuing an epic summer of celestial photography, NASA released a stunning image of the International Space Station on Sunday. The shot, captured by agency photographer Bill Ingalls, shows the ISS flying across the face of the moon at a breakneck five miles per second.

There are currently six crew members on board the ISS, which orbits some 300 miles above Earth. The moon, meanwhile, is 238,900 miles away.

Ingalls has served as the senior contract photographer for the U.S. space agency for 27 years. You can see more of his stunning work on his personal website.

Inside the International Space Station (ISS): NASA Command and Data Handling (CDH) Astronaut Training Manual

Learn about the International Space Station (ISS) from the textbooks used by the astronauts! These astronaut and flight controller training manuals, produced by the Mission Operations Directorate (Space Flight Training Division branch) at NASA’s Johnson Space Center, represent a major part of the formal flight crew training process. The manuals and workbooks are extremely detailed and comprehensive, and are designed for self-study. A full listing of all acronyms and abbreviations used in the text is included. They provide a superb way to learn about Station systems, hardware, and operational procedures. Special emphasis on crew interaction with the displays, controls, and hardware is included. This up-to-date training manual covers the (ISS) Command and Data Handling (CDH) System. It details the fundamentals of CDH including basic architecture, hardware, and software. These topics are covered from the Station level down to the Orbital Replaceable Unit (ORU) level, with a special emphasis being placed on the Portable Computer System (PCS), and Operations Local Area Network (Ops LAN) including the Station Support Computers (SSCs). The PCS and SSC are the primary crew interfaces onboard the Station. Because this manual is a teaching tool, each subsection provides a list of objectives that should be concentrated on during reading. The International Space Station (ISS) Command and Data Handling System (CDH) provides the hardware and software primarily used to collect data from onboard systems and payloads; processes that data with various types of software; and distributes commands to the right equipment. This system is primarily composed of computers called Multiplexers/Demultiplexers (MDMs), data buses, and payload network components. There are a total of 44 MDMs onboard the ISS at Assembly Complete. The MDMs exchange data and commands in a hierarchical structure referred to as tiers, using a U.S. Military Standard 1553B architecture to communicate on the data buses. The

Ridley Scott Sends His ‘Martian’ Script Into Space

NASA’s Orion spacecraft was designed to shuttle astronauts to Mars some day. When it made its first successful test flight on Dec. 5 from Florida’s Cape Canaveral, the 11-foot-long capsule didn’t blast anyone to the red planet, but it did keep with the theme, completing two orbits of Earth while carrying the front page of the script for “The Martian.”

The Space Where Zines And Knit Sweaters Overlap

When thinking of bike-centric cities, Los Angeles isn’t the first to come to mind. If you’re intrigued, however, by the experience of pedaling through the stretched out city’s traffic-laden streets without risking your life in the process, admiring the artwork of Lisa Anne Auerbach is a notable alternative.

Auerbach’s artwork combines political awareness with an unpretentious curiosity that allows meaning to cultivate slowly, sprouting up in unlikely spaces. If you know her work, you’re most likely familiar with her charged knitwear, which transform the haphazard act of sticking a bumper sticker onto your vehicle into a laborious, handmade endeavor.

lisa

“The sweaters I started knitting when I was on a bike to show my allegiance to things,” Auerbach explained to The Huffington Post Arts. “They worked like bumpers stickers. The knitting stemmed from this idea of passing out language in a car-centric city, where the place that messages are mostly spewed is through the automobile. The sweaters were, at the beginning, influenced by bicycling in LA.” Auerbach’s political knitwear buzzed online around the time of the 2012 presidential election, touting slogans from 1812’s “War Party” to 2012’s “Jewish Grandmas for Obama.”

In her upcoming exhibition at Gavlak Gallery, Auerbach veers away from the flagrantly political in her knitted works, creating instead tapestries of psychic predictions and flattened bookshelves. Each of Auerbach’s artistic projects feels like a new pocket of Los Angeles, discovered through and vaguely connected to a previous locale, yet still its own entity.

“I had been photographing these small, free-standing businesses for many years,” Auerbach explained. “When I was photographing those, I was thinking about an individual space in the architecture of the city. Having a small business is a very American idea. It’s the individual in the world, making your way, making a statement, being yourself — in an architectural context. At the same time I was doing this project, I started hearing a lot about Megachurches.”

A Megachurch, for the uninitiated, is a (most likely) Protestant church with at least 2,000 people in weekly attendance. The spaces themselves, which are scattered heavily around Southern California and other parts of the states, resemble monster malls more than religious sanctuaries.

“Around 2008 in the electoral cycle there was a lot of language around individualism and commerce and being yourself,” Auerbach said, “but then there were also a lot of ideas floating around about faith and family and God and being together and being unified. I felt like these two architectural elements of the American landscape were really, for me, indicative of the political language and ideas that were really floating around. It felt super American to me.”

Auerbach began photographing both the Megachurches and small businesses as architectural wonders, as well as symbols for the competing American ideals of the time. Instead of hanging up her compendium of Megachurches as framed photographs, she opted for a Megazine, a super-sized zine composed of Megachurch photos and a diaristic account of Auerbach’s visits there.

mega

“There’s something cumbersome about framed photographs and there’s something very precious about them. I didn’t want to give the Megachurches that much space, they’re very corporate structures. They look like malls or casinos; I didn’t want to invest in that. I have a history of making zines and I have a really large printer that prints beautiful photographs, so I wanted to make something ridiculous and oversized.”

While Auerbach’s sweaters brought political messages to the unconventional canvases of knitted garb, her Megazine transforms a traditionally radical medium into a bizarre tour guide through the corporate churches of SoCal.

American Megazine #1 from Lisa Anne Auerbach on Vimeo.

As a foil to her Megachurch series, Auerbach began photographing small business psychics; sites worlds apart yet still somehow related to their gargantuan counterparts. While photographing the independent psychics, Auerbach began getting readings herself, and became intrigued by the vocabulary exchanged in this interaction.

“I was interested in the language being used and this idea of an individual interpretation of some spiritual universe. In a way it felt like similar to how artists work. I felt like they were trying to convince me to see the world in a different way. And they’re doing this on an individual level. I felt like there was this kinship in terms of bringing a broader idea, maybe supernatural in some way, to an audience of one.”

Auerbach incorporates snippets of speech from these readings into knitted tapestries, swarming with blurbs including, “There’s no real time and space” and “Beliefs co-create reality.” The mantras float somewhere between inspirational, cheeky and bizarre, the cartoonish quotes offering a potential portal to a new understanding, with one foot in the world of clairvoyance and the other in the world of art.

The final portion of Auerbach’s Gavlak exhibition focuses on bookshelves, both the knowledge they hold, the time they span and the signs they signify about their owners.

“I have attachments to books for reasons that are incomprehensible,” Auerbach writes on her website. “I think I may ‘need’ to look something up in some book I haven’t opened in a century or so or maybe someone I love gave it to me. Some books I can’t imagine not having available to me anytime of the day or night, even if I never actually open them. They are comforting to have on the shelf, looking at me as I slumber, perhaps reminding me of another time or place or mindset. Anyhow, I don’t trust anyone who doesn’t have at least a few books in the house. You might not be able to judge a book by it’s cover but you can find a lot about somebody from their bookshelves. Or lack thereof.”

book

“It’s almost like a bookshelf becomes a self portrait of whosever’s books they are,” Auerbach told HuffPost. Thus the artist created a zine-like summation of all the books in her massive collection. Titled “Bookshelf,” it features the title and author of each book along with details that swerve back and forth between plot summation, personal experiences and vague observations, treating the book as text and physical object.

One reads:

“I bought this book in order to learn about
Kraftwerk’s cycling team, but I never read
it. Am saving it for a rainy day, though those
are rare in Los Angeles.”

Along with the zine, Auerbach also crafted knitted representations of bookshelves, dizzying black-and-white spreads of book spines with no center. “You could probably make a case for the bookshelves being emblematic of place in some way,” the artist said. “There are a lot books about LA or of LA artists or were read in grad school in LA. There’s probable some LA-ness.”

While the exhibition isn’t consciously painting a portrait of Los Angeles, the new age influence of psychic mantras and the easy breezy pace of a bike ride certainly offer a taste of that Southern California something.

“Who knows if it’s really an LA show? A lot of it has been influenced and inspired by riding my bike in LA,” Auerbach expressed nonchalantly.

Auerbach’s exhibition isn’t until January 31 of next year, but you can get a taste of the work below.

Artist Launches Bonsai Trees And Other Lovely Plant Arrangements Into Space

We’ve heard that outer space is, visually speaking, a pretty majestic experience. Yet although the galaxy beyond is undoubtedly filled with stars and misty clouds for days, there aren’t any decorative touches around to spruce up the space.

Enter Tokyo-based artist Azuma Makoto, aka the official interior decorator of outer space. For Makoto’s recent artistic endeavor, entitled “EXOBIOTANICA,” he launched a 50-year-old Japanese white pine bonsai, along with an arrangement of orchids, hydrangeas, lilies and irises, into the great beyond.

flower

The carefully arranged greenery was expelled from planet earth from Black Rock Desert, Nevada — also the location of the Burning Man Festival. The whole project was taped, thanks to the six GoPro cameras strapped to the balloons which carried the plants. As you could probably guess, the juxtaposition of crisp floral arrangement and the empty wilderness of outer space is a surreal sight to behold.

“I went to Amazon, Brazil last year and created art pieces with plants that were full of aliveness in dense forest where I could hear groan from the earth,” the artist explained to the Huffington Post. “This was a mind-blowing experience since I really felt that I was arranging the plants onto the earth. For this EXOBIOTANICA project, one of my inspiration sources was curiosity – I asked myself, ‘what would it happen when I arrange plants on the globe, from up in the sky?’ as a concept that is completely opposite of what I did in Brazil.”

The goal was simple: “I wanted to explore how flowers and plants would bloom, decay and change outside of the earth. I wanted to seek and tell how their beauties will look with the earth as its background.”

p

Before actually launching the flora into outer space, Makoto, in collaboration with John Powell of JP Aerospace, “experimented number of times under low-temperature and did rehearsals for camera’s angles beforehand so that we would able to estimate what would happen to some extent.” Despite all the preparations that took place, nothing could predict the staggering beauty that results from the strange and enchanting vision of a domesticated floral arrangement floating through the unbridled Milky Way.

Now that he’s tackled outer space, Makoto has set his sights on artistic destinations closer to planet earth, though just as visually compelling. “For the next steps I would like to try various conditions such as the bottom of the sea, volcano, the Arctic and the Antarctic to see what kind of expressions flowers and plants would display. These challenging concepts make me excited by only thinking about it.” We cannot wait to see where Makoto brings his lucky bouquets next.

Starship Gangbang: A Breeding Orgy in Space

Starship Gangbang: A Breeding Orgy in Space

Marooned in space with a busted stardrive, shipmates Natalie and Jaycee decide if they ever want to see Earth again, they will have to have children to finish the return trip home. With ship morale at an all-time low, the two think an orgy will do the trick to bond the crew again while randomizing the paternity of their progeny. This 6,000+ word, lighthearted group orgy contains tons of hardcore oral and anal sex, double and triple penetration, and enough cream pies to satisfy the hungriest of readers! Intended for mature audiences only. Excerpt: “Alright, let’s do this!” Jaycee cried. She stood up and pulled her dress up over her head in one swift movement. Her lacy black bra and panties gave her skin a deep, rich glow in the low light of the lounge. “Shit, I wanted to do that,” Javier said. “You can get the rest.” He took her up on that and caressed her arms and shoulders before moving to unhook her bra. It fell to the floor in front of everyone and he worked his hands down her sides to slide down her panties. The air brushed her inner thighs and she could feel her arousal seep out from between her pussy lips. She turned around and unbuttoned Javier’s shirt, undid his belt, and pulled down his trousers in less than ten seconds. “So are we going to do this one-by-one, a strip show kind of thing?” Andy asked. “Just do what you feel like, Andy,” Jaycee said, stroking Javier’s chest. Andy responded by whipping his boxers off and moving to unzip Natalie’s dress. Thorvald moved to take off her shoes and pull her panties off. She reached up and unzipped Joe’s pants and pulled them down to his ankles. A frenzy of clothes filled the lounge, and soon everyone was completely naked. There was a moment of hesitation. It seemed the ball was back in the women’s court to direct the first real move. Jaycee and Natalie looked at each other. “We didn’t really plan anything,” Jaycee said to everyone. “Should we draw straws to see who goes first?” Javier said. “Names

‘Mad Men’ Finale Review: Dance Fever, Burgers And Space Travel

Do not read on unless you have seen the seventh episode of “Mad Men’s” final season, “Waterloo,” which also serves as the show’s 2014 finale (it returns with seven episodes in 2015).

We all know that when a “Mad Men” episode is heavy on business intrigue and office politics, it’s usually a winner, but even by that standard, “Waterloo” may have been entirely too much fun. Jim Cutler pulled his big moves, and you know what? The late Bert Cooper was not Napoleon in this episode, Cutler was. The man with the big glasses overplayed his hand and he ended up with very little to show for it. Speaking of Bert Cooper, what just happened?! Did he just do a song-and-dance number with a group of prancing secretaries? I do believe that actually did happen. All righty then! “Mad Men,” never stop surprising me!

I’ll write more about what Don’s vision of Bert meant in a moment (spoiler alert: He wants Don to be free), but first, a question: Why does the moon orbit the Earth?

Now, you may think that I’ve been watching a lot of “Cosmos” lately (and you are correct). Of course, we know the answer to that question, but for thousands of years, people didn’t know. They came up with conjectures, ideas and myths — they crafted various kinds of stories. Some of those stories are great, some are a little loony, but, obviously, the truth is that gravity binds these two bodies together. We can’t see gravity, we can’t taste it or touch it, but, among other amazing things it can do, it can make enormous objects that are otherwise separated by vast stretch of icy space influence each other in multiple ways. The Earth and the moon are bound by invisible bonds — they are cosmically connected, forever.

As are Don and Peggy.

There were twin sources of driving tension in this episode: Would the astronauts make it back from the moon, and would SC&P land the Burger Chef account? Both of these things mattered greatly, and yet, they also didn’t matter.

Of course, everyone wanted the astronauts to come home safely (and kudos to “Mad Men” for threading that storyline with genuine suspense and excitement, even though we knew the outcome of the astronauts’ return). The thing is, whether or not their re-entry went perfectly, the astronauts had still accomplished something historic, something truly awe-inspiring. The astronauts (and the NASA teams behind them) had put human beings on the moon — an important symbolic step for the maturation of our species.

That accomplishment would always stand, regardless of what happened afterward. The same is true of another enormous but more personal landmark — the maturation of Don Draper.

Think about all the things that happened to Don before that pitch meeting with Burger Chef. His wife decided that their marriage was over. It had been over in all but name for some time, but just before leaving for Indiana, he got the final death notice from Megan. For Don Draper, here was another failed attempt at intimacy and commitment.

On the work front, Bert Cooper died. He and Don weren’t close, but he’d had Don’s back enough times for it to matter, and Don felt bad for Roger and everyone else who cared about the old coot. And of course, Cooper’s death altered the balance of power inside the agency, something that Cutler didn’t even wait 30 seconds to point out (this week in Lou is the worst: Lou is not actually the worst — that honor this week goes to the odious Cutler). When he got that call from a distraught Roger, Don had every reason to believe that all that he had worked to regain was now gone. He’d have to start over again, with no wife, no allies like Roger and Peggy in the background, no real friends to rally around him. He was as isolated as we’ve ever seen him.

So what did Don do at this very low point? How’s this for momentous: He didn’t pull a Don Draper. He didn’t hobo out to the Coast or make some other self-destructive decision. In a miraculous development, he didn’t think much about himself at all. He made a strategic and personal decision — in the wee, small hours, he decided on a course of action that makes sense from several different perspective. He saw that mission to its completion in a selfless and focused way. He helped Peggy deal with her nerves, he made her believe in herself and he made damn sure the pitch meeting went as well as humanly possible.

This is connection. For Don, this is landing on the moon.

What is true connection but an ability to see someone else’s point of view? What is connection but a desire to put someone else’s needs or a larger goal first? Don didn’t need to let Peggy land the account. He could have gone out on top and garnered the Burger Chef account as a final “screw you” to everyone on Team Cutler. But he didn’t do that. In one of his darkest hours, he didn’t fall down a rabbit hole of self-absorption and pain. He didn’t crawl into a bottle and drown in narcissistic angst. On his way out the door — which is where he thought he was headed — he tried to help his protégée attain a meaningful achievement. He got nothing from that, aside from a powerful rush of pride.

To me, the center of the episode was the look that passed between Don and Peggy when she stood up at the end of her pitch. Don knew she had nailed it, and she knew it too. Don may not be much of a husband or father, let’s face it, but he knows how to do the thing that Peggy just did, and sharing that moment with her — a moment of real and well-earned triumph — was sweet indeed. A collective effort at NASA got men on the moon, and a team effort at SC&P had brought them all to this point, but Don and Peggy were the ones who set foot on that spectacular terrain.

Don and Peggy have orbited each other forever, exerting strong influences on each other; she started out as the satellite and then he took that role, but none of that really matters now. As we saw last week and saw again this week, that connection is more tangible and real than ever. Don didn’t give Peggy talent — she always had it — but he helped her hone it, he pushed her, he toughened her and he made sure that when the moment came, she nailed the pitch. And she taught him too — about friendship, loyalty and persistence. They love each other in all the ways that matter. Like gravity, you can’t see that love, but it’s undeniably there. Don Draper, Dick Whitman — it doesn’t matter. He’s no longer an asteroid, floating through the cold darkness of space on his own, and he knows it. They both do.

Don also knows that there will always be office machinations — it’s just unavoidable during these tumultuous times. But does the end result have to be selling out to McCann? Unlikely. The moon, Bert crooned to Don, belongs to everyone. Why can’t a new firm — one begun by SC&P refugees — belong to everyone he cares about? “The best things in life are free,” apparently, and Don really wants to be free, once and for all.

Coming on top of a generally wonderful episode, Bert’s shoeless dance number was icing on one tasty cake, but it also set up the final run of episodes quite efficiently. Don could accept the large sum of money on the table and sell out to corporate overlords, or he could take off in a rocket to the moon — a risky journey, of course, but he’d have Peggy, Roger and possibly even Pete by his side. Let’s face it, Cutler’s technocratic beliefs and even Roger’s practical/desperate machinations don’t truly constitute vision. Don and Peggy have that — can they also be leaders? We’ll see.

I wouldn’t be against those two. But we will have to wait until 2015 for the answer to all these questions, and that makes me sad. As many have observed — even creator Matthew Weiner made this point — the show generally pulls off a big series of moves at about the mid-point of a typical 13-episode season.

In this 14-episode final season, the show stayed true to form by doing just that kind of thing in the seventh episode, but it’s likely that nearly a year will elapse before we see the end to this series of personal and professional machinations. AMC has done “Mad Men” no favors by stretching out the exit of a show that thrives on ambiguity and atmosphere. “Mad Men” typically marinates in certain themes and ideas before turning on the heat in the home stretch, and that wait between half-seasons will drain a lot of the momentum out of the show’s final run. But it is what it is, and we’ll have to deal with it.

As it happened, there was a lot to savor in this lovely yet energetic episode: We got a vintage Don Draper pitch (he was very smart in the way he reeled in Ted Chaough, who sure seems clinically depressed at the moment); we got a couple of subtle and evocative reminders that Peggy is indeed a mother; and I just loved the series of family tableaux that constituted the lyrical middle section of the episode. It was a brilliant visual representation of the Burger Chef “family supper” pitch: Roger, Mona, their son in law and grandson were an odd kind of family, and yet they shared the wonder of the day together. Betty’s family and her friend’s brood represented a range of viewpoints and ages, but in the end, Sally didn’t kiss the cynical athlete, she kissed the nerdy boy who made her feel a bond with something beautiful. Ted, Roger, Julio, Sally and of course, Don — they were all looking for connections, for bonds that weren’t just practical but emotional.

Numbers, data, surgical accuracy: That’s what Cutler advocated, and that’s the kind of cold, precise science that NASA workers had to use to make the moon shot work. But the journey to the moon wasn’t just about trajectories, angles and engineering calculations: It was a story people told themselves (with help from Neil Armstrong’s memorable pitch: “That’s one small step for man, one giant step for mankind.”).

“Mad Men’s” particular kind of humanism — one that loves individuals and outliers and emotional connections more than insiders, blowhards and data mavens — was all over “Waterloo.” And the moon landing was a brilliant vehicle for that kind of collective resonance and personal accomplishment. What this episode was after was a sense of wonder, and who wouldn’t feel that after seeing Don Draper act like a normal, compassionate, responsible human being. For once, Houston, we did not have a problem.

Cutler’s the only one who couldn’t see that there’s only so much you can do with number crunching and data. People want to be moved, and they were moved by the moon landing — in part, as Peggy noted, because everyone who watched it shared the same range of emotions.

Of course people enjoyed that story of progress and wonder– they’d been starving for it.

A final hail of bullets and favorite lines:

  • First things first: Ryan McGee and I will be recording a podcast with a very special guest on Monday. Around midday Monday, check the Talking TV page or on iTunes (Once it’s ready, I’ll also add the podcast to the bottom of this post).
  • Not only did Bobby break out his telescope, Megan had a telescope on her patio in California. What does this mean? Did Sharon Tate own a telescope??! #telescopetruthers
  • It looked to me as though Bert Cooper owned a Pollock. Cooper, you magnificent bastard, you!
  • “We don’t owe you anything. You’re a hired hand! Get back to work.”
  • In an episode stuffed with memorable moments, Meredith’s awkward attempt to seduce Don was hiii-larious. That moment was also a subtle reminder of Don’s change of status: These days, he’s just another guy at the office without a huge amount of mystique; women aren’t throwing themselves at him on a regular basis, not during work hours anyway. Only the dumbest human that SC&P employs would try to “comfort” Don in that particular way, and he’s way too smart (and/or not desperate enough) for that.
  • “What if it’s quicksand?”
  • “Should I reschedule?” “Get OUT!”
  • Excellent work in the final phone-call breakup between Don and Megan. Jessica Pare infused one simple word — “Don.” — will many layers of meaning, and few people do sad/hurt face better than Jon Hamm. Did you also notice that he was tearing up a little after Bert’s dance routine? He’s going to miss that shoeless elf.
  • “Take off your shoes.” “I don’t feel like it!”
  • “Marriage is a racket!”
  • I’m going to side with “Mad Men”/”Mad Style” bloggers Tom and Lorenzo regarding the development of Joan of late. I don’t think the show has done a good enough job of showing two things: Why she is so anti-Don, and why she is so mercenary these days. Both those things appear to be linked and they’ve practically been the only notes she’s gotten to play, though as we saw last week, she still very much believes in love and genuine relationships. For many seasons, she and Don got along fine, and though I know she’s eager to hang on to the status and partnership she now enjoys, her hostility to Don this season has never been properly explained, in my view. It’s kind of sad, because I think she’s an interesting character, but, on the work front anyway, there hasn’t been enough about her of late to offset the view of her as ruthless toward her once-respected co-worker.
  • Sally stands, stares and smokes just like Don.
  • Roger taking the nameplate from Bert’s office was just the right touch — sad, subtle and, in a way, momentous as well. Note the real emotion in his voice when he said, “Now I’m going to lose you too!” to Don. Roger’s the eternally irresponsible jester, but it’s nice to get these reminders that he feels things deeply.
  • “We have no liquor!”
  • The pitch scene did a great job of getting us inside Peggy’s head; she was so preoccupied and afraid that everything was just reverberating noise to her. Side note: She looked terrific in that scene. Her crisp blue and green dress and her bold red lipstick were just perfect.
  • I loved the shot of the SC&P team in the motel, rapt by the moon landing. There was such genuine interest and sincere delight on their faces. “Mad Men” can get grim and dark, but when it lets itself be optimistic, few other shows can touch it.
  • “Cooper still dead?”
  • “Cutler’s not going to stop until the firm is just Harry and the computer.”
  • The running gag of Harry not really being a partner has never gotten old.
  • “Really.” “It’s a lot of money!”
  • In a season that hasn’t been as .gif intensive as I would like, I hope many different images of Bert dancing around Sterling Cooper are up before morning. I’d bet half the reason that Weiner did the song-and-dance scene is because actor Robert Morse is a Broadway veteran, and Weiner just couldn’t let him leave the show without taking advantage of a few of those skills. And why not?
  • Thanks to everyone who has read these weekly “Mad Men” reviews — I am truly appreciative of the fact that you stopped by, and I hope we can all reconvene here next year.

The Final Trailer For ‘X-Men: Days Of Future Past Is A Traveler Of Both Time & Space

On let the sun beat down upon the final “X-Men: Days of Future Past” trailer. Twentieth Century Fox and director Bryan Singer use an instrumental version of Led Zeppelin’s “Kashmir” to score the last tease before the film’s May 23 release. It works, not just because the song’s lyrics (“I am a traveler of both time and space, to be where I have been”) fit in with the film’s plot: In the post-apocalyptic future, Professor X and Magneto (Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen) send Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) back to the past to change the course of history. The time travel puts Jackman in the same scenes as “X-Men: First Class” cast members Jennifer Lawrence, James McAvoy, Nicholas Hoult and Michael Fassbender, and allows him to integrate with the new “X-Men” while still keeping old faves (hey, Halle Berry!) involved in the story as well. Watch the “X-Men: Days of Future Past” trailer, and ignore any and all similarities between the Sentinels and the Helicarriers in “Captain America: The Winter Soldier.”
