Patrick Stewart Returning as Captain Picard Is the Best Thing to Happen to Star Trek in Decades

When the news came this weekend that Patrick Stewart will indeed be reprising his iconic role as Jean-Luc Picard in a new Star Trek series for CBS All Access, the internet went crazy with PatStew love. The reaction to the announcement was overwhelmingly positive, and it showed just how important Star Trek: The Next Generation is not just to Trekkies but also to more mainstream audiences. And indeed, the reveal that Jean-Lu is returning is certainly one of the best things to happen to Star Trek in — dare I say it? — decades. Though, all the same, it’s also one of the riskiest moves the franchise has taken in some time.

Kristen Stewart Talks Directing Debut

Kristen Stewart’s short “Come Swim” marks the actress’s directorial debut, turning a vision she had in her head for some time into a film now available for streaming globally.
Stewart was on hand Thursday evening briefly speaking about the film’s creation and the thinking behind it following a private screening at the Westside Pavilion. “Come Swim” tracks a day in the life of a man grappling with a broken heart, delving inside his personal thoughts and emotions that become so crippling before he eventually comes to and realizes he will be fine.
“It was like when you are so in your own head,” Stewart explained to those in attendance at the screening. “You have things, feelings that, in a really cliché way, are feelings you just think nobody could possibly relate to. Yet, they’re the most standard. There’s not, like, a thought or a feeling you’re going to have that nobody’s had before you, but somehow when you’re in that, you’re so alone. I wanted to be able to really step inside someone’s head and externalize that and then be able to take a step back afterwards and be like from the outside we see you so clearly.”

Martha Stewart Finds Snoop Dogg ‘Very Attractive’—But Insists She Doesn’t Smoke Marijuana with Him

They’re two of the most unlikely pairs on television — but things between Martha Stewart and Snoop Dogg are strictly professional.

The Martha & Snoop’s Potluck Dinner Party co-hosts earned themselves an Emmy nomination for the undeniable chemistry they have on the their VH1 reality show, leading many to wonder whether their odd couple’s working relationship would translate into a hot romance.

Stewart, 75, was asked that very thing during a visit to Fox-5’s Good Day New York on Wednesday. And she was quick to stress that Snoop is “out of the picture” as a “boyfriend.”

“Snoop is younger than my daughter,” she said of the 45-year-old rapper, adding that she wouldn’t even “fool around once” with him. “We have to have to have a professional relationship, don’t we Snoop?”

RELATED: Watch Snoop Dogg’s Hilarious Reaction to Seeing How Hot Dogs Are Made

That doesn’t mean Stewart doesn’t appreciate Snoop — but just as his friend. “He is very attractive, I must say, he really is an attractive human being,” she said. “Everybody likes him. It’s so nice that he’s popular, and the guests really enjoy him and respond to him nicely. And he has a great sense of humor. He’s fast!”

“Snoop is a lot of fun to work with,” she added.

So if they’re such friends, does that mean that Stewart’s smoked marijuana with Snoop? Not so much. “The moment I signed the contract, I vowed — and I don’t smoke anyway, it hurts my throat — I vowed never, ever to step into the trailer, that trailer that’s on the lot,’” she said. “And I just sort of like, I can take a whiff in the air.”

“My only addiction is my iPad,” she joked later.

Snoop confirmed the sentiment, telling PEOPLE earlier this year, “I’ve smoked around her, but she don’t partake.”

She may not have learned to smoke weed, but Stewart has learned a lot working with Snoop.

“He’s always saying, ‘Teach me to learn, Martha.’ So I’m teaching him my way, and he’s teaching me the world of rap, the world of black entertainment,” Stewart said. “On some of the programs, I’m the only white person there. And the rappers have a vocabulary that’s kind of hard to understand if you don’t really listen. So I’m having the greatest time. Really, it’s a merge of cultures. ”

Martha & Snoop’s Potluck Dinner Party returns for a second season — with guests like P. Diddy, Queen Latifah, RuPaul, Wanda Sykes, and Kate Upton — on Oct. 16 at 10 p.m. ET on VH1.

Kristen Stewart Hated How Her Relationship With Rob Pattinson Was Turned Into A Commodity

Kristen Stewart opened up about her relationship with her former “Twilight” co-star Robert Pattinson.

In an interview with The Sunday Times, Stewart, who was never one to share personal details about her relationship with Pattinson, said she kept things private, “because I wanted things that are mine to be mine,” not because she was trying to hide.

The pair, who dated for more than three years, were one of the most famous celebrity couples in Hollywood. Much to Stewart’s dismay, keeping their relationship out of the public eye wasn’t really possible.

“I hated it that details of my life were being turned into a commodity and peddled around the world. But considering I had so many eyes on me, I suddenly realized [my private life] affects a greater number of people than just me,” she said. “It was an opportunity to surrender a bit of what was mine, to make even one other person feel good about themselves.”

She continued, “If it didn’t seem like a relevant topic, like something that needed help, I would have kept my life private forever. But then I can’t walk outside holding somebody’s hand, as I’m followed everywhere. When I was dating Rob, the public were the enemy — and that is no way to live. It wasn’t this grand statement, ‘I was so confused! Now I’ve realized who I am!’ I have not been struggling.”

Stewart’s comments echo similar sentiments she gave to Elle UK in 2016. She opened up about her sexuality and explained that while she was dating men, presumably Pattinson, “everything personal felt like it was immediately trivialized.”

“It changed when I started dating a girl,” she said. “I was like, ‘Actually, to hide this provides the implication that I’m not down with it or I’m ashamed of it, so I had to alter how I approached being in public. It opened my life up and I’m so much happier.’”

(At the time of the interview, Stewart was dating Alicia Cargile. She has also been linked to French singer Soko and musician Annie Clark, aka St. Vincent.)

Last month, during her “Saturday Night Live” hosting gig, Stewart again took control of the narrative surrounding her relationships and, for the first time ever, referred to herself as “so gay.”

‘I’m Done’: Patrick Stewart Says He’s Retiring From X-Men Movies

The X-Men may have to find a new mutant to seek guidance from.

Patrick Stewart has announced that he is retiring from the “X-Men” movie franchise after 17 years portraying the sage mutant leader Professor Charles Francis Xavier ― a.k.a. “Professor X.”

The 76-year-old British actor shared his decision during a SiriusXM Town Hall discussion on his upcoming X-Men film “Logan.” The full discussion and the film are slated for release on March 3, Entertainment Weekly reported Friday.

Speaking beside his “Logan” costar Hugh Jackman and the film’s director and co-writer James Mangold, Stewart said he came to the decision after watching the latest installment about a week ago and finding himself moved to tears.

“I sat there I realized there will never be a better, a more perfect, a more sensitive, emotional, and beautiful way of saying au revoir to Charles Xavier than this movie,” he said.

Jackman, who has also confirmed that he is leaving the franchise after starring as Wolverine, was one of the first people he said he shared the news with.

“I told [Jackman] that same evening, ‘I’m done too. It’s all over,’” Stewart said.

Stewart has starred in six of the X-Men movies preceding “Logan.” These are “X-Men” (2000), “X-Men 2” (2003), “ X-Men: The Last Stand” (2006), “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” (2009), “The Wolverine” (2013), and “X-Men: Days of Future Past” (2014).

Kristen Stewart Says She’s “So Gay” on SNL and Makes Out With Vanessa Bayer in Steamy Video

Kristen Stewart, SNLKristen Stewart got super candid and turned up the heat on NBC’s SNL.
The actress, who is promoting her new movie Personal Shopper, made her hosting debut on the show Saturday….

E! Online (US) – TV News

SPECIAL TIP UPDATE!

Kristen Stewart Called Herself ‘So Gay’ On ‘SNL.’ Here’s Why It Matters.

Last night’s episode of “Saturday Night Live” was must-see TV for a number of reasons: The Grim Reaper was tapped to play Steve Bannon, Melissa McCarthy showed up and delivered a blistering, pitch-perfect portrayal of White House press secretary Sean Spicer, and host Kristen Stewart said the F-word on live TV during her monologue.

But there was another equally remarkable, though admittedly quieter, moment in the first five minutes of the show that you might have missed: Stewart, for the first time ever, publicly used the word “gay” in reference to herself (see the above video at the 2:26 mark).

Stewart’s sexual identity has been the subject of rumors for years. It’s difficult to avoid speculation about your private life when you’re not just famous but also one-half of one of the most famous couples in the world, as Stewart was when she dated “Twilight” co-star Robert Pattinson for several years. But even after that relationship ended, Stewart was still dogged by the press thanks to her involvement with a number of queer women in the entertainment industry, including Alicia Cargile, singer Annie Clark, who is better known as St. Vincent, and the woman she’s currently dating, model Stella Maxwell

To her credit, Stewart wasn’t exactly secretive about her relationships. In a 2016 interview with Elle UK, the actress used the word “girlfriend” to refer to Cargile, her partner at the time. She also said that “dating a girl” forced her to be more open about her relationships than she was when she was dating a guy. “To hide this provides the implication that I’m not down with it or I’m ashamed of it, so I had to alter how I approached being in public,” she said, adding, “It opened my life up and I’m so much happier.”

But for all of her candor, Stewart had never used the word “gay” ― or any other label ― to identify herself until last night. And really, that’s fine. In fact, it’s very much on trend with how other young people think about their sexuality. A 2016 survey found that 35 percent of millennials identify as something other than exclusively heterosexual (and a whopping 52 percent of individuals between the ages of 13 and 20 reported the same) but didn’t necessarily use a term like “gay” or “bisexual” or “lesbian” in reference to themselves.

Many people find these labels to be less necessary than they once were. As queer people become more and more integrated into mainstream society, thanks to changing cultural norms triggered by things like marriage equality and higher visibility in the media, many feel less of a need to identify as any one thing ― or to talk about it in any kind of public way, like a splashy tell-all interview. But labels can still be hugely useful, not only for individuals to orient themselves within a community, but also as a way to continue to increase that aforementioned visibility and push the LGBTQ movement forward, especially in times of political and cultural uncertainty, like now.

When one of the biggest movie stars of the last 10 years refers to herself as “so gay” on one of the most-watched late-night television shows on the air, it forces people to reconfigure how they think about what it means to be “gay” and who and what that term includes. Suddenly, anyone who only knew Stewart as “that girl from ‘Twilight’” and “Robert Pattinson’s ex girlfriend,” is confronted by her sexuality in a new and startling way, and it upends assumptions about the community, which is exactly why coming out is still so crucial.

It should be noted that Stewart’s “so gay” comment was made in reference to ridiculous tweets President Donald Trump once sent about her relationship with Pattinson:

And, yes, the phrase was delivered with more than a hint of sarcasm and a certain degree of exasperation, which seemed to be leveled at Trump but also maybe at the world’s obsession with her sexuality. And that’s fair. It can’t be fun having your every move photographed and dissected. But in an era when LGBTQ rights are currently at risk in new and frightening ways, public acts of solidarity with the community, including coming out, are more important than ever.

It should also be noted that Stewart’s “so gay” comment doesn’t necessarily mean that she literally identifies as gay. She did date Pattinson, someone who, as far as we know, identifies as male, which may mean she identifies as bisexual or pansexual or sexually fluid or in some other way than “gay,” which is traditionally thought of as being sexually attracted to someone of the same gender. Perhaps she chose that phrase because it packed the most punch and would be the most instantly recognizable to those watching the show ― and because it’s probably the term most people have used behind her back ever since she started dating women. But she also may have decided at this point in her life that it’s the term that feels the most appropriate. We just don’t know.

Regardless, I had to catch my breath when I heard her say it last night. I’m proud of Stewart for standing up and joining the community in a way she hadn’t before, especially at a time when our community is hurting and scared. Coming out doesn’t happen just once and it’s rarely easy. Because heterosexuality is still the assumed default orientation in our society, every time a queer person meets someone new, there’s the chance they’ll be required to explain who they truly are, and in that moment exists the radical opportunity to challenge and change minds. Last night I believe Stewart probably did both, and I think we’re all a little bit better off because of it.

Jon Stewart Finally Went Long About The Election And Donald Trump

How do you stay positive during a Trump presidency? In the words of Jon Stewart, “F**king buckle your seatbelt and get ready.”

The former “Daily Show” host shared these thoughts and more at a TimesTalks conversation that featured Stewart and journalist Chris Smith, author of the new book, The Daily Show: An Oral History

“It is odd to be in a position of knowing that the leader of the free world tweeted that you were a pussy at 1:30 in the morning,” Stewart said while discussing the president-elect.

Stewart echoed thoughts he shared on a recent episode of “CBS This Morning,” that the divisions in the U.S. go beyond party lines.

“Not everybody that voted for Trump is a racist,” he said at one point. “I don’t give a fuck what any of you say to me. You can yell it at me, you can tweet it at me. They’re not all racists. Or they’re not giving tacit support to a racist system … We all give tacit support to exploitative systems as long as they don’t affect us that badly.”

He brought up a conversation with another person who argued that “by saying that [Trump supporters] are not all racists, they are giving tacit support to a man of racist language.” Stewart then pointed out that many of Americans are complicit in exploitative and damaging systems, asking the person to pull out his iPhone.

“I was like, ‘Guess how those are made, guess who makes them?’” Stewart said. “’Oh yeah, but that’s … ‘ What, what is it? It’s not different, we all do that. All of our shit stinks and getting beyond that takes incredible work.”

He didn’t let Trump off easy either, remarking that, as portrayed by Trump’s campaign, Hillary Clinton “was an unqualified Secretary of State because the way she handled classified material. His selection for Secretary of State will be David Petraeus, who pled guilty to mishandling classified material. He said she was unqualified because she gave a speech to Goldman Sachs. His Secretary of the Treasury is somebody from Goldman Sachs. We’re in post-accountability.”

“Let’s look out for the losers,” Stewart said. “Having somebody you agree with have greater control over the levers of power might be a comfort, but it’s not a solution. Unfortunately, I think our expectation now is, ‘Oh, great, one of our team is in charge. I don’t have to think about this anymore.’ And I think it’s never actually been the case.”

During the talk, Stewart had much more to say about the election, Donald Trump, Barack Obama and the media. For posterity, HuffPost transcribed a few of his best remarks.

The quotes have been occasionally condensed for clarity. It should also be noted that Stewart often characteristically undercut his points with jokes about masturbation and dildos to lessen the self-seriousness.

In a long, poignant response, Stewart explained he believes the length of the presidential campaign is largely to blame for our divided country.

How long is the campaign? A year and a half? I assume [television media is] talking right now about whose running in 2020. They don’t give a flying fuck about governance, they care about campaigns and that’s where the fun is for them. That’s devastating. And not only is it devastating news-wise, it’s devastating to all of us.

Because if a campaign is too long, the fault lines between different tribes in our societies solidify. A campaign is 18 months long and you’ve got to choose a side for 18 months and then a disagreement becomes an argument and an argument becomes a fight and a fight becomes a feud and a feud becomes a war.

And those lines harden to the point where you can’t get past that … Because what you become is just teams. And the campaigns are just too long. Have you ever been in a parking lot after, like, a Giants game and it’s between a guy in a Giants jersey and a guy in, like, a Cowboys jersey? They will fight. They will punch each other. What is that fight? Like, “Hey! Your shirt, it’s got a star on it. It’s supposed to have an NY. I’m going to have to punch you in the face.” There’s no reason for that, other than basic human primitive nature, and if we turn our discourse into that, then that’s what it will become.

Stewart wanted to stress that satire doesn’t change government — political activism will.

We [at “The Daily Show,” speaking facetiously] were the destroyers of men. And creators of empires. I think that generally is satire’s role and has always been. The rise and fall of civilization at our whim.

[If Stewart still had his show] I would have probably allowed Hillary to come a little closer in the Rust Belt, but I still think I would have given Michigan to Trump. I had a little something going on where i was going to give Gore Florida. There was a bit we had planned that was going to hand Florida to Gore.

I think of one of the lessons of this book and what we’re talking about is to put satire and culture in its proper place. That controlling a culture is not the same as power. And that while we were all passing around really remarkably eviscerating videos of the Tea Party ― that we had all made great fun of ― [they were] sitting off a highway at a Friendly’s taking over a local school board.

And the lesson there is, as much as I love what we did and I liked it, there is a self-satisfaction there that is unwarranted, unearned and not useful.

He expanded on his thoughts about one side’s demonization of the other.

You’ll read about it in the book, I had a really hard time getting over my defensiveness and blind spots about sexism and racism and diversity and all those things. Not because I think I’m an ignorant, racist, sexist person ― I just think I’m a person. And I’m a fucking idiot sometimes.

This has to stop. This idea that we’re all … that our team is perfect and the other team is demons. And this is not like a Kumbaya, let’s all get along.

Let’s fucking fight, but let’s fight with precision and integrity, and not with just demonization.

And I’ll say this, I know a lot of first responders. I spent a lot of time in that community. A shitload of them voted for Trump. The same people that voted for Trump ran into burning buildings and saved whoever the fuck they could no matter what color they were, no matter what religion and they would do it again tomorrow. So, if you want to sit and tell me that those people are giving tacit approval to an exploitative system ― I say, “OK, and would you put your life on the line for people who aren’t like you? Because they did.” I get mad about this stuff.

He pointed out that Obama wasn’t a perfect president.

There are more people in this country that voted for the thing that you like than the thing that you’re afraid of, but the thing that you’re afraid of is not a monolith anymore than the thing that you like is a miracle cure. It’s not a panacea. And Obama has been in office for eight years and I don’t know about you, but it seems like there’s still shit to do.

And there’s a lot of shit that I didn’t agree with. I thought they were terrible for press freedom. I still am not quite sure I understand a centralized policy of spying and droning. Like, I don’t know.

There will be real victims of the policies over the next four years, but there were real victims, like Barack Obama’s administration deported more people than any in history. That was real and whether we took comfort in the fact that he was one of the good guys that did that, real people paid a price for that. And you have to care about that, even if it’s one of your guys that did that.

Here’s his response after a member of the audience asked how Stewart would remain optimistic during Trump’s term.

Let me ask you this ― so eight years ago all branches of government were controlled by the Democrats ― were you [optimistic] then? [Audience member says yes.] Was it perfect? [Audience member says, “Nothing is ever perfect.”] So, on the flip side of that is anything ever ― what you need to do in this situation is rally the troops for those most vulnerable.

In this time that’s difficult, the way you get [optimistic] is, I think, sort of in the way when I was in the show and I was not feeling it. You’ve worked any place for 16 years, some days you come in and you just don’t have it and you suck. And you hope that other people will pick you up. I was very fortunate, at the show, that we had really great people and when I didn’t have it, they did.

But there will be real ramification to this election. [Find] who are the vulnerable people, where are the vulnerable societies. And not in tweets, in practice. In reality.

If [Trump] tries to deport dreamers, then that’s where everyone has to go, to protect them. If he tries to make a Muslim Registry, then everyone has to go there and help them. You have to find the people that are going be most in jeopardy, I think, and put your attentions on them because now it’s about reality.

But the only thing I would tell everybody to hearten is we’re still the same country. Obama didn’t change and fix everything and Trump can’t ruin everything. If we’re that vulnerable to one guy, that guy — that’s how we’re going out? This incredible experiment in liberty and democracy that we fought and died for is going to go out ― with that guy.

That can’t be how this story ends.

 …

Maybe I’m naive or idiotic, but I feel like ― when has this been easy?

Fucking buckle your seat belt and get ready.

…

[Responding to another audience member with a similar response]

I’m optimistic because, I cant believe how much better this country is than it was when it started. It’s always up and back.

And you [the audience member] said something interesting, you said we’re all going to go back to our liberal bubble. I’m like, yeah, that’s a shame.

Because it does create this idea that, in the same way that I hated ― Sarah Palin used to do this all the time ― “Out here in real America.” There’s no real America. It’s just, it is what it is. Generally people are just trying to get to work.

And I think the key for us is to be like, who needs a ride?

Jon Stewart: Donald Trump Is An Internet Troll Running For President

Comedian Jon Stewart returned to standup on Tuesday night, and wasted no time going after one of his favorite targets: Donald Trump.

“It’s like an Internet comment troll ran for president,” the former “Daily Show” host said of the GOP presidential frontrunner at the 9th annual Stand Up for Heroes event in New York.

(Warning: strong language ahead)

“When I was doing the program, we liked to make jokes about him because he’s hilarious and easily mockable,” Stewart said, according to Entertainment Weekly. “We would mock him with things such as, ‘He looks like a bewigged boiled ham,’ or something like that. So he would tweet in the middle of the night, ‘Jon Stewart’s real name is Leibowitz. He’s a Jew. Why does he run away from his heritage?’ You know, because that’s what I think most presidents would do. I remember Lincoln used to drunk tweet: ‘Hey, emancipate this, you fuck!'”

Stewart, who has had a long-running feud with Trump, was referring to tweets such as these:

Stewart expressed some disbelief that Trump is a serious contender for the presidency.

Are we really doing this Donald Trump thing? We’re really doing that as a country?” Stewart said, according to The Hollywood Reporter. “He’s fucked. I like to put my name in giant letters on everything I own as much as the next guy, but the only other people that do that are like 8-year-olds going to camp.”

Then, he broke out his famous Trump impression.

“Where did I put that building? Oh there it is, Trump. Boom. Where’s my fucking helicopter? Boom, Trump,” Stewart said. “Where’s my wife? Boom, Trump, nice.”

If Trump is aware of Stewart’s jokes, he has yet to fire back on Twitter.

Stewart had words for people who say they like Trump because of his unfiltered views.

“People are like, ‘I like Trump; he says what he thinks,'” Stewart said, per The Hollywood Reporter. ”What he thinks is stupid. That’s like if your friend is like, ‘I would like to fuck your mom.’ Why would you say that? … I don’t give a shit if you’re politically correct, just be correct, correct.”

While it seems Trump got hit with the sharpest of comedic barbs, Stewart also told jokes about Ben Carson, Hillary Clinton, Joe Biden and even himself before wrapping it up with some exasperation over politics.

“I’m done with this shit,” he said, according to EW. “Done, done, done.”

Jon Stewart Gets Body-Slammed By John Cena On ‘Monday Night Raw’

Alas, Jon, that was an inevitability.

Wrestler John Cena is known to exact revenge on those who’ve wronged him, and he did just that on “Monday Night Raw,” schooling comedian Jon Stewart with his signature “Attitude Adjustment.”

“I’m just gonna do what I gotta do,” Cena said before hoisting the recently-retired “Daily Show” host onto his shoulders and body-slamming him to the ground.

While hosting WWE’S “SummerSlam” on Sunday, Stewart surprised fans by smacking Cena with a steel chair during the wrestler’s bout against Seth Rollins.

As CBS Sports notes, the move helped Rollins retain his World Heavyweight Championship and snag Cena’s United States Championship belt as well.

On Monday, Stewart attempted to explain his chair-wielding aggression. As a wrestling fan, he simply could not bear to see Cena “tie the great Ric Flair … because, in my mind, ‘The Champ is Flair,’” Stewart said. “Not on my watch. Wasn’t going to let it happen.”

Flair is a retired pro wrestler who clinched a record 16 world titles during his career. Cena is currently looking to tie that record.

Watch Cena’s takedown of Stewart in the video above.

Kristen Stewart Doesn’t Owe You a ‘Coming Out’ Speech

BY RACHEL KRAMER BUSSEL

Kristen Stewart has issued a bold response to those intent on confirming exactly what sexual label to pin on her. In the latest issue of Nylon, in which the actress appears on the cover, she tells anyone interested in her sexuality: “Google me, I’m not hiding.” She added:

If you feel like you really want to define yourself, and you have the ability to articulate those parameters and that in itself defines you, then do it. But I am an actress, man. I live in the fucking ambiguity of this life and I love it. I don’t feel like it would be true for me to be like, ‘I’m coming out!’ No, I do a job. Until I decide that I’m starting a foundation or that I have some perspective or opinion that other people should be receiving… I don’t. I’m just a kid making movies.

It’s a fitting statement from Kristen Stewart, not only because she’s called fame “the worst thing in the world,” but also because she’s saying, essentially, that the focus on her personal life detracts from discussion of her work — or anything else about her. It’s a reminder that Stewart doesn’t owe the Internet an official “coming out” — and to presume she does is insulting and insensitive.

MORE FROM THE DAILY DOT

Already, her sexuality has become part of the cultural conversation about Stewart — this article being no exception, I admit. Whereas Nylon simply went with “Riding Shotgun with Kristen Stewart” for a headline, countless reports about the interview have honed in on her comments about her sexuality, making it the focal point. Some, such as “Kristen Stewart plays coy over sexuality rumors,” made it seem as if she didn’t go far enough in her statement.

This is natural, I suppose, in a world where, as the Advocate explains, before a celebrity like Stewart has officially “come out, “media outlets create “a glossary of queer innuendo that is meant to signal to a reader that a person is gay or in a same-sex relationship, without actually stating it outright.” Their hilarious list of these ways of saying-it-without-saying-it — which includes “tomboy,” “gal pal,” and “sapphic circle” — highlight the absurdity of our need to make Stewart answer the question “What are you?” not for her satisfaction, but for ours.

By phrasing her comments as she did, Stewart turns the question back on the asker, pointedly making us collectively wonder, “Why do we care so much about who she’s sleeping with? What does it change about how we perceive her whether she’s dating a man or a woman?” Those questions, whether we’re talking about a famous movie star or the rest of us, are much harder to answer than a simple word can ever summarize.

In an interview with Beatrice in 1997, writer Jill Nagle said, “Sex is what academics would call oversignified. You can play tennis with a friend without worrying about ‘what it means,’ but you can’t do that with sex.” That quote has stayed with me, because even though in the intervening years, we’ve made a lot of progress in terms of being more knowledgeable and accepting of a variety of sexual orientations, sex acts, and genders, we still want a simple way of framing a topic that’s actually more complex, in many cases, than one word can summarize.

We still get so fixated on who people are screwing we practically salivate over every juicy detail — witness the media frenzy when an interview with Cate Blanchett was edited in a way that implied she’d had sexual relationships with women, followed by her clarification that she hadn’t, actually. Stewart does not want to be a poster child, and her comments, appearing two months after her mother was quoted in the UK’s Sunday Mirror confirming Stewart’s relationship with assistant Alicia Cargile, are a way of making it clear that she takes such fascination with her sexuality as intrusive.

Stewart is also making a larger point about the changing role of labels like gay, lesbian, and bisexual — namely, that for many people, they are beside the point. She went on to tell Nylon, “I think in three or four years, there are going to be a whole lot more people who don’t think it’s necessary to figure out if you’re gay or straight. It’s like, just do your thing.”

We’ve seen numerous similar sentiments in recent pop culture, from people who are proud, unashamed, and not hiding their same-sex attractions and relationships, but don’t want to be defined by them, from Miley Cyrus‘ pronouncements about being gender- and sexually fluid and Raven-Symone’s rejection of the label “gay” (“I want to be labeled a human who loves humans”) to Maria Bello’s embrace of the term “whatever” to describe her sexual orientation and Ilana on Broad City‘s declaration that “I have sex with people different from me.”

In their way, those rejecting sexual labels are offering up a very optimistic point of view, one that presumes that whatever your sexual orientation, you are entitled to explore it and define it for yourself, regardless of what anyone else thinks. This is, of course, true — though it’s vital to note that we haven’t yet reached the point where living either in the ambiguity Stewart praises or as an out gay, lesbian, or bisexual person means you’re free from discrimination.

Stewart’s right to find the questioning off-putting (if you don’t agree, ask yourself if you’d want your every date, kiss or act of holding hands, let alone what you do in bed, obsessively scrutinized). As Sarah Seltzer pointed out at Flavorwire, just as asking celebrities whether they’re feminists has led to an increasingly pointless PR spin cycle, so too does questioning them about their sexuality often come across futile and passé. Seltzer argues it’s in celebs’ best interest to remain as publicly ambiguous about their sexuality as possible, lest they be pigeonholed.

To some extent, I agree, but in Stewart’s case, specifically, her words don’t sound ambiguous. They sound like the opinions of someone who simply feels there are more important things in her public life than her personal relationships.

That’s not to say having out queer celebrities as role models isn’t important; rather, that those who want to take on that responsibility should be able to do so voluntarily, or else it’s pointless — a debate exemplified in the responses to Roxane Gay saying on Twitter that Stewart’s sexuality is not a big deal. Stewart clearly does not want her sex life to precede her acting in the public eye. She doesn’t want her sexuality to oversignified, or even, it seems, brought up at all.

The latter is unlikely to happen, but we can grant Stewart — and by extension, everyone else — the right to define or not define their sex lives as they see fit.

Petition Calls For Jon Stewart To Moderate A Presidential Debate

Jon Stewart’s “Daily Show” retirement is barely two weeks old, but there’s already a push to bring him back to the airwaves next year — this time as moderator of one of the upcoming presidential debates

“Over the last 16 years, Jon Stewart has played an influential and iconic role in covering U.S. politics and media,” the petition on Change.org reads. “We believe he should continue that tradition as a moderator at one of the 2016 Presidential Debates.”

The petition notes that Stewart has interviewed 15 heads of state, 22 members of the Cabinet, 32 U.S. Senators and seven members of the House of Representatives, as well as “scores of other political leaders from this country and around the world while establishing himself as the most trusted person in (satirical) news.”

In addition, the petition points out that with Stewart serving as host, “The Daily Show” won Peabody Awards for its coverage of the 2000 and 2004 presidential elections.

So far, more than 120,000 people have signed the petition addressed to the Commission on Presidential Debates, the nonprofit and nonpartisan organization that sets the locations and chooses the moderators for each debate.

Neither the CPD nor Stewart have commented on the petition. However, the organization spells out the qualifications on its website:

“The moderators are selected by the CPD. The CPD uses three criteria to select its moderators: a) familiarity with the candidates and the major issues of the presidential campaign; b) extensive experience in live television broadcast news; and c) an understanding that the debate should focus maximum time and attention on the candidates and their views. The moderators alone select the questions to be asked, which are not known to the CPD or to the candidates. They do not meet with the campaigns, nor do the campaigns have a role in moderator selection.”

At least one presidential hopeful has signed the petition:

Stewart has said little about his post-“Daily Show” plans, but his next big public appearance will be as host of WWE’s SummerSlam on Sunday.

He also reportedly intends to be active in animal rescues. Earlier this year, Farm Sanctuary announced that Stewart and his wife, Tracey Stewart, “bought a farm in New Jersey with the intention of providing a home for farm animals rescued from cruelty.”

But the creators of the petition are hoping to bring him back to television at least one more time.

“(S)orry for pestering you so early in your retirement, Mr. Stewart!” an update to the petition reads. “I hope you take all of this as a compliment and see how grateful these supporters are for your work.”

Jon Stewart Proves Ridiculous Interviews Over The Years Were Real

Clear your schedule. You’re going to need a lot more than one moment of zen after this.

Jon Stewart says that a big question “The Daily Show” gets asked is, “Are the interviews they do real?” The show constantly seems to have ridiculous people who share polarizing views like denouncing the notion that President Obama is the Antichrist only because he is, in fact, the second coming of Hitler. You know, stuff like that.

Surely, these can’t be serious, right?

Well, unfortunately …

Image: Tumblr

In order to prove the show didn’t distort peoples’ views, Stewart had Jessica Williams take a camera crew to contact past interviewees. And it looks like they’re still as ridiculous as ever.

The good news is at least person doesn’t think the president is the second coming of Hitler anymore. Now, he thinks he’s the son of Satan — which is pretty much back to the Antichrist theory again. So at least it’s nice everything is coming full circle.

Jon Stewart’s final “Daily Show” as host will air Thursday night, Aug. 6 at 11:00 p.m. ET on Comedy Central.

Jon Stewart Slams Donald Trump Supporters For Defending ‘Mexican Rapists’ Comments

Donald Trump has found himself in the center of controversy since he first announced his bid for presidency, and Jon Stewart is having a field day.

On Thursday night’s show, “The Daily Show” host told viewers he wanted to thank one person “who’s been there really throughout this whole run, but specially near the end of the run.” That person was Trump.

“Donald recently glided back into my life on his solid gold up-and-down people mover, cranked up the unauthorized Neil Young, opened up his crazy hole, and promised me I would never be without material again,” Stewart told his viewers.

The focus of Stewart’s segment was a string of anti-immigrant remarks Trump made during his presidential announcement speech. You may remember hearing the Donald say: “They’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems with us. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists. And some, I assume, are good people.”

Like many of us, Stewart was baffled by these comments, but even more so by the people who continued to defend them.

“The one good thing to come out of this is that the farce of his candidacy is finally exposed: his un-seriousness on display, for all people and voters to see! And the results will be obvious,” said Stewart, before showing that Trump is actually in second place among Republican voters in a national poll in three states flashed on screen.

“F–k me,” was all he could say.

This Jon Stewart Tribute Is Everything You’ve Ever Loved About Him

Mustn’t … cry …

Jon Stewart’s tenure as host of “The Daily Show” is soon coming to a close. And before we get all weepy-eyed, let’s look back at his legacy with a little emotional distance. This guy (along with the show’s other talented writers, of course) was just damned good at getting to the comedic gem of a story.

It should go without saying, but we will say it anyway: we will absolutely miss him. But until that sad day when he no longer sits in the “Daily Show” captain’s chair, let’s enjoy this homage to Stewart presented by John Hodgman, who sacrificed being with his Martian family to make this appearance.

Be … strong.

Patrick Stewart Defends Northern Irish Bakery That Rejected ‘Support Gay Marriage’ Cake

“Star Trek” icon Patrick Stewart has come to the defense of Northern Ireland’s Ashers Bakery, which was found guilty of discrimination last month after refusing to prepare a cake decorated with a same-sex marriage slogan.

The case made headlines in 2014 after Belfast-based activist Gareth Lee requested a cake featuring “Sesame Street” characters, along with the message, “Support Gay Marriage.” Although the bakery’s owners initially accepted the order, they called two days later to cancel it, citing their religious beliefs.

In response, Stewart called the Ashers case “a deliciously difficult” subject in an interview with BBC’s Newsnight, adding that he “found himself on the side of the bakers” because nobody should be forced to write politically-relevant text that they didn’t support.

“It was not because it was a gay couple that they objected. It was not because they were celebrating some sort of marriage or an agreement between them,” Stewart is quoted as saying. “It was the actual words on the cake that they objected to, because they found them offensive.”

He went on to note, “I would support their rights to say, ‘No, this is personally offensive to my beliefs, I will not do it.'”

The remarks may come as a surprise to some fans of Stewart, who has previously spoken out in defense of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community. In January, the actor said his background in theater made him a natural LGBT advocate.

“I think this is where the theater is such an appealing world, because it embraces everything and always has. So there was never a moment where I made an intellectual choice that I would be a supporter of gay civil rights,” he said at the time. “It was always a natural and uncomplicated choice.”

Martha Stewart on Justin Bieber: ‘Grow up’

Martha Stewart has a special connection to Justin Beiber. “I’ve always been a fan. I just want him to grow up.”
Stewart was standing by Beiber’s autographed guitar he donated for the silent auction at the gala Wednesday night raising nearly $ 500,000 to benefit the Martha Stewart Center for Living for geriatric care at Mount Sinai Hospital. The guitar wasn’t sold at the event, held at Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia headquarters for 250 guests. But on Thursday, Stewart was tweeting to drum up interest. Those honored at the event were Al Gindi and the late Samuel “Sonny” Gindi, the founders of Century 21 off-price chain, as well as Betsey Gotbaum, the late Victor Gotbaum and Hester Diamond. “We believe in living life to the fullest and maintaining a great quality of life right to the end,” said Isaac Gindi, partner in Century 21 and Samuel’s son.
“The Martha Stewart Center for Living helps people achieve this.”

Jon Stewart Tells Dana Perino That Fox’s ‘The Five’ & ‘The Daily Show’ Would Make A ‘Sh*t Taco’

“The Daily Show” is not exactly known as friendly turf for Fox News hosts. But on Wednesday night, “The Five” co-host Dana Perino ventured into what many at her channel might regard as enemy territory.

When Jon Stewart explained that his team was “obsessed” with “The Five,” Perino suggested their programs join forces.

“It’s like Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups — peanut butter and chocolate,” Perino said. “Maybe we could all get together here and have a mashup.”

“I think of it more as a shit taco,” Stewart replied. “I’m not saying who’s who. I’m just saying I don’t know that it’s necessarily two great tastes that go great together.”

As he mocked some of her co-hosts, Perino gamely played along. And when Stewart asked about the “dumb guy” on the “The Five,” Perino quickly asked, “Could you be more specific?”

Stewart was referring to Eric Bolling, who Perino noted had a dog named Freedom “after the Freedom Towers, ok, so watch the jokes.”

That elicited an eye roll from Stewart.

“My dog’s named Holocaust,” Stewart shot back. “I’m just saying, you want to have a dog tragedy-off, well, I think I’ve got that covered.”

This Is The ‘Daily Show’ Interview Jon Stewart Regrets Most

Jon Stewart spent 16 years behind the desk of “The Daily Show,” but there’s only one interview he really regrets.

In a discussion with The Guardian, the host said he wishes he questioned former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld harder about his role in the Bush administration’s post-9/11 conflicts. Rumsfeld visited “The Daily Show” in 2011 to discuss his memoir Known and Unknown.

I should have pushed, but he’s very adept at deflecting,” Stewart told The Guardian. “That interview with Rumsfeld went shitty, but it’s still just an interview. He’s the one who has to live with the repercussions of what he really did, so there’s nothing that could happen on my show that carries that same level of regret.”

The host went on to say the reason behind his choice to leave “The Daily Show,” noting that it had nothing to do with the show not working any longer. “It was more, ‘Yup, it’s working. But I’m not getting the same satisfaction.'”

“Daily Show” correspondent Trevor Noah will take over hosting the show later this year when Stewart steps down. Back in March, Stewart joked that he was so thrilled for Noah that he might even consider returning as a correspondent.

Jon Stewart Shows How Weird Rand Paul’s Presidential Announcement Was

Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) made his big announcement on Tuesday, telling a crowd in Louisville that he’s running for president in 2016.

But as Jon Stewart pointed out on Tuesday night’s “Daily Show,” it took a while to get there.

Before Paul went onstage, there were multiple speakers, the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance, the singing of the national anthem and several video presentations — including one that featured a clip from “The Daily Show.”

“Thirty minutes into the show, I had said more at this event than the guy who was there to announce his candidacy for president,” Stewart said.

Along with taking forever to get to the announcement, there were a few weird moments, like when former congressman J.C. Watts (R-Okla.) slipped and said Paul would become “the next United States of America,” as well as a very excited young man in the audience.

Check it out in the clip above.

Martha Stewart Delivers The Dirtiest Joke Of All At Justin Bieber’s Roast

Turns out having Martha Stewart at the Comedy Central “Roast of Justin Bieber” was a good thing after all.

Stewart’s tame joke about the roast on Twitter earlier this month had some wondering if she could deliver the type of edgy and downright mean-spirited cracks that mark these celebrations:

Wonder no more, because Martha Stewart can push the envelope to the extreme. She delivered one of the edgiest jokes of the night, and followed that up with one of the raunchiest.

Check her out in the clip above, then consider purchasing some highly absorbent Martha Stewart bed linens.

Jon Stewart: Why Does The Obama Administration Keep Prosecuting Whistleblowers?

Blowing the whistle seems great!

Herve Falciani blew the whistle on HSBC, the British bank that allegedly helped clients evade taxes. Switzerland rewarded him with charges of industrial espionage.

We wouldn’t do something like that here in America, right?

Thomas Drake, a former National Security Agency official who provided information about mismanagement at the agency to a Baltimore Sun reporter, got the Espionage Act thrown at him.

“I assume you mean the rarely enforced provision of the Espionage Act, that involves rewarding whistleblowers with millions of dollars and unlimited blow jobs,” Jon Stewart said on Thursday night’s “The Daily Show.”

Nope!

Drake ended up pleading guilty to a misdemeanor in the case, but his life was ruined in the process.

Stewart said the United States’ applications of the Espionage Act — which, we’ll remind you, is a World War I-era law to stop people from aiding the enemy — highlights a terrifying trend.

“Of the 11 times in our entire history that the Espionage Act has been used against government workers sharing information with journalists, seven of them have been under this presidency,” he said.

See what else Stewart had to say in the clip above.

Jon Stewart Says Mike Huckabee’s Gay Marriage Stance ‘Makes No F**king Sense’

Daily Show” host Jon Stewart appears to have a new hobby: tearing apart Mike Huckabee’s hypocrisy.

When the former Arkansas governor and possible 2016 presidential candidate was on the show last month, Stewart went after him for attacking Beyonce’s music but performing with Ted Nugent.

Now Stewart’s tearing apart Huckabee for the bizarre explanation he gave for opposing gay marriage. On Sunday, Huckabee said he can’t evolve on the issue because it’s a biblical matter.

“I can’t just ‘change’ with the ‘times’ if it means deviating from ‘biblical law,'” Stewart said (complete with the air quotes) in summing up Huckabee’s opposition to same-sex marriage. Then he pointed out a few other pieces of “biblical law,” at least two of which might not be as important to Huckabee.

“It’s why Huckabee never mixes fabric in his clothes or trims his beard or sleeps with another man’s slave,” Stewart said. “It would be wrong.”

Huckabee also declared that asking him to accept gay marriage would be like “asking somebody who’s Jewish to start serving bacon-wrapped shrimp in their deli.”

Stewart said that analogy “makes no fucking sense.”

“No one is forcing you to get metaphorically married to the biblical abomination that is this bacon-wrapped shrimp,” Stewart said.

And that led to one of the most unforgettable “Daily Show” interviews yet.

Jon Stewart Finds The Most Ridiculous Blizzard Coverage

Snowpocalypse 2015 was such a big nothing in some areas, especially in New York City, that one weather forecaster even apologized.

So what’s a network hyping a storm supposed to do? On Tuesday night’s “Daily Show,” Jon Stewart said they had some options.

“Acknowledge that conditions had changed. Ease up on the breathless hype. Focus your attention on New England, where it was actually really snowing,” Stewart suggested. “Or desperately cling to the original narrative like dingleberries on a sheep’s ass.”

Stewart played clip after clip of reporters overreacting to small amounts of snow. However, he aimed his sharpest icicles at CNN, which sent Don Lemon out in a “Blizzardmobile.”

“Blizzardmobile? Settle down, Batman, it’s a Ford Explorer,” Stewart said. Then, referring to some of the highly controversial statements Lemon has made on the air recently, Stewart showed an image of the CNN reporter working from a Dairy Queen truck.

“And by the way, with the way you’ve been reporting lately, you’re lucky you’re not in an actual ‘Blizzardmobile,’” Stewart said.

But the CNN “Blizzardmobile” gave Stewart an idea: Maybe the “Daily Show” can take it to the next level.

Stewart sent correspondent Jordan Klapper out in a car, a bicycle and a sled to to interview people about everything from Yemen to the Greek election.

Jon Stewart Shocked By Fox News Apology Over Muslim ‘No-Go Zones’ In Europe

On Saturday, Fox News did something that managed to shock Jon Stewart: The network apologized.

“I’ll be damned. It’s the rare Foxus contritus of legend,” Stewart said on Tuesday night’s “Daily Show” after a moment of stunned silence.

Then Stewart pondered just what triggered the mass mea culpa.

“What did they say that was so much wronger than usual that it required a network-wide apology?” Stewart asked. “How bad does bullshit have to smell before the odor is detected by people who live on a mountain made out of that substance?”

The multiple apologies were due to a guest on the network who claimed there were Muslim-controlled “no-go zones” in the United Kingdom and France. These zones, which do not exist, are under Sharia law and non-Muslims are not even allowed to enter, the guest said.

The Fox apology led to a piece about efforts here in the United States to ensure Sharia law is never imposed in places like Alabama, sometimes with surreal results.

5 Reasons Rod Stewart Is Our Favorite Frontman On His 70th Birthday

Rod Stewart turns 70 on Saturday (Jan. 10), and in addition to wishing the rocker a happy birthday, we’d like to pay him a little tribute. Here are five reasons why we love him — a lot:

1. He is one of the last frontmen still standing.
Don’t believe us. Even Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin fame noted in The Telegraph, “There are only three or four frontmen left, from our time, who actually just kick the mic stand up and do it, and that’s me, Rod Stewart and Mick Jagger.”

Last October marked the 50th anniversary of Stewart’s release of his first single, his take on the blues classic “Good Morning Little Schoolgirl.” That’s staying power and Stewart is proof that if you love what you are doing, you can just keep doing it. He maintains an active touring schedule which this year includes New Zealand, Australia and Las Vegas, of course.

2. Half the world’s post-50 population lost its virginity with “Maggie May” playing in the background.
OK, a slight exaggeration, but please raise your hand if you associate that classic with the smell of Brut or English Leather. Uh-huh, point proved.

3. He’s on Facebook.
Sure, a lot of celebrities from the music world are on social media. But how many of them at his age rack up engagement numbers like Stewart’s? He regularly amasses 1.2 million views of his videos posted on Facebook (including the multiple times we hit the play button at work.) And how can you not love a guy who posts photos from his Rome hotel room without his pants on?

4. He invented the long shag haircut for men.
OK, maybe he didn’t invent it, but he sure brought it to the world stage. Stewart was way ahead of those long-shag cuts on Motley Crue’s Nikki Sixx and Tommy Lee. Stewart’s hair style was hair “possibly the flagship mane for this specific mens’ haircut,” according to the Men’s Hair Forum on rock star hairstyles. There you have it.

5. He values education, even if it means paying more in taxes.
Rod Stewart left Britain for Los Angeles in 1975 to avoid paying 83 percent of his income in taxes. In fact, his 1975 album “Atlantic Crossing” is a reference to his repatriation in the U.S. But last summer, he announced that he would be returning to his birth land so that his youngest two children (he has eight in total) could be educated there.

So what do YOU love about Rod Stewart? Let us know in comments.

Stephen Colbert Calls Jon Stewart A ‘Liberal Lion,’ Praises ‘Rosewater’ And Gives Him A Kiss

On his umpteenth stop of his press tour for “Rosewater,” Jon Stewart, the person, sat down with Stephen Colbert, the character, for an endearing meeting of the old friends/nemeses.

In part one of the Thursday night interview, Colbert reminded Stewart to soak up his “Colbert Report” experience because there are only 12 episodes left, then chided him for being the “voice of the left” but failing to increase the youth voter turnout during the midterm elections.

“How does it feel to know that your entire career could have just as well been shouted into a sock and thrown off an overpass?” Colbert asked.

In part two, Colbert put his politics aside and praised Stewart for his directorial debut, even going so far as to say he should “stay in his lane” instead of doing both TV and film so well. Stewart opened up about the inspiration for “Rosewater,” showed a clip and told the story of Jason Jones being mistaken for an actual U.S. spy.

But the best part of the interview has to be the ending, in which Stewart shows how exhausted he is from doing interviews and receives a hug and a kiss from Colbert in return.

Jon Stewart Explains His Unique Brand Of Activism

Jon Stewart, host of Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show” and the writer and director of the new film “Rosewater,” said he has a unique brand of activism that involves “living pleasantly.”

“People always say, ‘Well, are you an activist?’ and I say, ‘No, I’m not really an activist,’ but if there’s some measure of activism in me, it’s the quiet activism of living pleasantly,” Stewart said in a recent interview for Voice of America’s satirical show “OnTen,” which airs in Iran.

“That sense of, when you go to a restaurant, the person who’s waiting tables, like, don’t be a dick to them,” Stewart told VOA’s Saman Arbabi, a writer and producer who created “Parazit,” the VOA television show that has been called “The Daily Show of Iran.” “That mentality, I feel like, I try to infuse in my life and my work, if I can.”

When Arbabi admitted he’s “seen a lot of dickheads in this field,” Stewart laughed and revealed how he keeps his focus.

“I’ve worked a lot of shit jobs, and I’ve struggled a lot,” Stewart said. “I think you never lose, that person is always with you, to let you know that you’re not so great. I’ve been fired enough to know that that person is still in me, and that I have to work harder and get better.”

The episode of “OnTen” featuring Stewart will air on Friday.

Jon Stewart Shows Why China Really Needs That Climate Change Deal

Beijing may have been just about the best possible place to unveil a major deal on emissions because as Jon Stewart pointed out on Tuesday night’s “Daily Show,” the city really needs it.

The air quality is so bad that Beijing had to shut down factories and schools to help reduce smog ahead of the APEC summit. And these efforts worked, leading residents to dub the rare clear skies “APEC blue.”

“Well at least residents didn’t flee in fear of the enormous, ‘SKY FIREBALL!'” Stewart joked, referring to the rare glimpse of sunlight.

That wasn’t the only APEC oddity. From “Hunger Games” cosplay to world leaders acting more like “Mean Girls,” Stewart took a look at the summit’s strangest moments.

Jon Stewart Perfectly Sums Up The GOP’s Closing Arguments

Election Day is here, and the Republicans are poised to win control of the U.S. Senate. For voters planning to head to the polls on Tuesday, “Daily Show” host Jon Stewart looked at what he called the GOP’s “closing arguments.”

On Monday night, Stewart played a series of clips from Republican campaigns that were focused on terrorism and Ebola.

“I thought that was a very powerful and cogent essayistic argument,” Stewart said. “Move over ‘hope and change’ and welcome ‘vote for us or get beheaded while pooping blood!'”

As Stewart learned, the Republicans aren’t just getting help from ads filled with fear. They’re also moving forward with voter ID laws that critics say make it more difficult for young, minority and female voters to cast their ballots. Of course, these Americans traditionally vote for Democrats.

Kristen Stewart Addresses The Irony Of ‘Clouds Of Sils Maria’

“Clouds of Sils Maria,” the latest film from French filmmaker Olivier Assayas, is one of the most meta, layered films on this year’s festival circuit. Not only is the story about a revival of a play within a movie, but the casting itself plays a big part in how we perceive the characters.

Assayas’s film, which screened as part of the New York Film Festival this month, follows Maria Enders (Juliette Binoche), a famous French actress whose big break was playing the young lead role in a play 20 years prior. Now she has the opportunity to star in the revival of the play, only this time as an older woman opposite the character for which she became known. As Maria runs lines with her personal assistant, Valentine (Kristen Stewart), their relationship begins to mirror and complicate that of the women in the play.

clouds of sils

The fictional play, which Assayas described during a press conference as a “condensed, brutalized version” of Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s “The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant,” follows a fatal attraction between an older woman and her manipulative young assistant. As the film progresses, the lines blur between Maria’s relationship to the play 20 years ago and the dynamics between Maria and Valentine, Maria and Jo-Ann Ellis (Chloe Grace Moretz), the actress playing the younger role, and Maria and her past self.

The plot deepens as Assayas’ story becomes dense with thick layers of intertwining relationships. The actresses who star in the film are equally important to its concept. On one level, Binoche’s relationship to her character is very connected to her own relationship to Assayas, as she starred in 1985’s “Rendez-vous,” a film that he co-wrote and which launched her into the spotlight.

stewart

Kristen Stewart, though, embodies the fascinating real-life connections. Multiple instances in the film wink at the actress’ celebrity status and some prior scandals. In one scene, Valentine asks Maria whether the actress had a romantic affair with the play’s director when she was younger. “You wouldn’t understand,” Maria says to Valentine. But the audience might: Stewart had a highly-publicized affair with filmmaker Rupert Sanders while the director was still married. Valentine also helps Maria evade the paparazzi multiple times, which her character angrily calls “cockroaches.” The irony is hilarious and makes Stewart’s great performance even more enjoyable to watch.

“I had to reign in the glee on my face. I had to make sure my cheeks weren’t turning red and I wasn’t in hysterical laughter when I said some of the lines that I said in the movie,” Stewart said during a press conference on Wednesday. There are other moments in the film where Moretz’s Jo-Ann, who is constantly in the tabloids for DUIs and affairs, is a clear commentary on celebrity culture and the media. “I think that my position — just the life that I’m living and my experience — sort of gave [the film] this irony,” Stewart said with a laugh. “[It] just made it a bit more relevant and interesting.”

Stewart was originally cast in the role of Jo-Ann, which may have made for some all too obvious allusions. But Assayas revealed that he initially pictured Stewart in the role of Valentine, and ultimately gave her the part once they met. Unlike many films, “Clouds of Sils Maria” is a work of art that begs audiences to be aware of its internal references to Hollywood and celebrity culture. “It’s a movie where you ultimately never forget that you’re watching those actresses,” Assayas said. “It’s part of what the film’s about.”

“Clouds of Sils Maria” opens in March 2015.

Jon Stewart Gives ‘Schoolhouse Rock’ A Modern Makeover On ‘The Daily Show’

An entire generation learned how a bill becomes a law thanks to “Schoolhouse Rock,” but the old “I’m Just a Bill” video doesn’t fully capture how lawmaking works today.

So on Tuesday night’s “Daily Show,” Jon Stewart used the current inaction in Congress as the inspiration for a new version of the classic tune.

The new rendition is called “How a Bill Becomes an Ad,” and it perfectly captures how absolutely nothing ever gets done in Washington.

Jon Stewart And ‘The Daily Show’ Are Ready For The NEXT Nude Photo Scandal

Some people are blaming the victims of the Hollywood nude photo hacking scandal for taking the pictures in the first place. But on Wednesday night’s “Daily Show,” host Jon Stewart fired back with the perfect response.

“I get it. These women were asking for it,” Stewart said. “It’s like they said to the Boston Strangler’s victims: ‘If you don’t want to get strangled, you shouldn’t have had a neck.'”

With that, Stewart turned to Senior Technology Correspondent Jordan Klepper, who’s clearly ready for the hackers: He appeared completely nude with his (hopefully not real) bank account and password information scrawled across his body.

“I’m taking back my sexual power,” Klepper declared. “You want celebrity naughty bits? Here they are: DING DING DING DING DING. Dinner time, you sick fucks!”

Check out Stewart’s look at the story in the clip above… and see more of Klepper than necessary below.

The 24-year-old actress, who stars in the film alongside Juliette Binoche and Chloe Grace Moretz, looked très chic in a Chanel couture two-piece jumpsuit, which she paired with nude heels. Stewart styled her orange locks in loose waves and rocked smokey eye makeup.
