Cos Broadens Reach in Mainland China With Tmall and Four New Stores

COS SPRINGS IN CHINA: Six years after Cos debuted in China, the minimalist sportswear label will be stepping up its efforts with next month’s online store launch on Alibaba’s Tmall platform.
The two-tiered effort will involve aligning with China’s largest business-to-consumer marketplace for both Chinese and international brands and retailers, and the start of the stand-alone site cosstores.cn. The H&M-owned company will also be extending its reach in mainland China with new stores.
There are currently 28 Cos stores in 17 cities and four more will be added this year. In Shanghai, a new flagship is planned for the Jing An Kerry Centre. Stores in Beijing, Xiamen and Guangzhou will also open in the coming months.
Marie Honda, managing director of Cos, described the launch online as a milestone in the company’s global expansion. Describing the Cos brand as “a fantastic addition to Tmall’s strong portfolio of fashion brands,” said Jessica Liu, president of Tmall Fashion and Luxury. “Chinese consumers are among the most savvy and style-conscious in the world, and we are very excited to introduce Cos’ timeless designs to the more than half a billion consumers on Alibaba’s platforms.”
In honor of the occasion, the brand will be unveiling its installation “New

H&M to Open First Afound Stores in Sweden in June

PARIS — Hennes & Mauritz is opening its first Afound stores in Sweden in June, a discount store that will sell a variety of brands, as the Swedish retailer experiments with formats for engaging with consumers.
“The idea was to create an innovative marketplace in the off-price sector,” noted Mattias Ekberg, creative director of the brand.
“Some people might call us an outlet, but our vision is for the customer to experience a style and deal-hunting paradise,” Ekberg added.
Slow to adapt to the shift of consumers to digital avenues, H&M has been struggling with a decline in business in recent months. The Swedish retailer is in the process of redirecting efforts from the store-expansion-fueled growth to improving existing stores and pushing further into the digital sphere.
The stores will be located in Stockholm and Malmö, opening on June 14 and 16, respectively, with online services open at the same time.
“We want to make it easy for our customers by being where they are, whether it’s digitally or in selected physical stores, and by offering a range tailored to local demand,” said Fredrik Svartling, the brand’s managing director.

Hunting World’s Collaboration With Artist Daniel Arsham Hits Stores

American brand Hunting World’s collaboration with New York-based contemporary artist Daniel Arsham is hitting stores.
The exclusive six-item capsule collection will be exclusively available at Comme Des Garçons-owned Dover Street Market stores in London, Tokyo, New York and Beijing, as well as at Kith in Los Angeles and New York, starting from May 26. On the same day both doors will also launch the merchandise on their respective online shops.
The capsule was extended to a full-look offering, in time for its retail debut, although a preview was teased at the brand’s fall men’s show in Milan last January.
The collection features a T-shirt, a hoodie, a baseball cap and a coach jacket along with a duffel bag and a carry-all style, both priced at $ 1,980. With a streetwear and easy attitude, the collection’s items are splashed with both the brand’s and the artist’s logos, the latter coming under the AA tag. The apparel pieces will retail at between $ 140 for the T-shirt and $ 460 for the hoodie.

Grocery Stores and Chain Restaurants Are Now Legally Required to Display Calorie Counts to Customers

It’s about to get a lot harder to ignore how many calories you’re consuming.

Starting Monday, all restaurant, grocery and convenience store chains with 20 or more locations are required to display calorie counts for all items on their menus to comply with a mandate from the Affordable Care Act.

According to the Washington Post, the nutritional information should be visible on menus, both on display boards in stores and handout menus, and digital ordering kiosks.

While most larger chain restaurants already display nutritional information after Congress passed the law in 2010, the Food Marketing Institute says the effect on grocery stores will be most obvious, where you will now be able to view calorie counts on salad bar stations, bakery items and rotisserie orders.

The changes will likely not be immediate as locations start to follow the new rule and incorporate the information for their consumers. For the first year, the Food and Drug Administration will be educating locations on the best ways to display the newly required information.

Want the ultimate dish on the latest celebrity food news, plus exclusive recipes, videos and more? Click here to subscribe to the People Food newsletter.

“We know that providing calorie information on menu labels actually inspires consumers to make smarter choices about overall consumption, when they want to,” FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb told the Washington Post. “Studies show a reduction of anywhere from 30 to 50 calories a day, on average, for consumers who are eating out — and consumers eat about one-third of their meals outside the home. So over the course of a year, that could translate into three to five less pounds gained, just from the reductions that you achieved through providing more information on menu labels.”

Although the rule went into effect on May 7, the Washington Post reports that the FDA will not be enforcing penalties against establishments who have not posted calorie counts until 2019.

Untuckit Expanding Reach With Retail Stores, Other Apparel Categories

NEW YORK — Untuckit is an old-fashioned feel-good American success story.
Two business school buddies with not a stitch of fashion industry experience started a company in 2011 to provide a solution to a problem they saw in the men’s apparel market: button-down shirts that looked and fit properly when worn untucked.
The business launched as strictly an online play with just the one signature product and financed with $ 150,000 raised from friends and family. They came up with a signature sail insignia for the tail of the shirts and it was off to the races.
By last June, Untuckit had attracted the attention of California venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins, which invested $ 30 million to fund the company’s growth.
Since its founding, Chris Riccobono, executive chairman, and his partner Aaron Sanandres, chief executive officer, have expanded into a range of men’s categories including polos, sweaters, sweatshirts, shorts and even sport coats as well as women’s wear and shoes. And Untuckit also operates 18 stores around the country.
Today, the brand will introduce its children’s collection, followed by men’s pants on Nov. 14. And by the first week in December, the company will increase its owned store count to 25, including three more units in

Indochino to Add Four More U.S. Stores

Indochino will add to its retail presence this summer by opening four more “showrooms” in the U.S. over the next two months.
The Vancouver-based omnichannel men’s wear brand will open stores in New York, Chicago, Washington, D.C. and King of Prussia, Pa., between July 7 and Aug. 11. That will bring the number of stores overall to 17. Indochino refers to its storefronts as “showrooms” since unlike traditional retail, the locations carry no inventory. Instead, customers visit the store to be fitted and to personalize their suits and furnishings in a process similar to that employed by Bonobos and Knot Standard.
The first new Indochino store will be located at 25 Broad Street, across from the New York Stock Exchange in lower Manhattan. It’s expected to open on July 7. Next up is a location at The Shops at North Bridge in the River North District of Chicago on July 14. On July 21, a unit will bow at the Tyson’s Galleria in McLean, Va., outside Washington, D.C., and the last one will open on Aug. 11 in the King of Prussia Mall outside Philadelphia.
The showrooms will average 2,300 to 2,500 square feet, although the Chicago unit will be smaller, at 1,600

Mr and Mrs Italy to Open Stores in Beijing, Miami and Hong Kong

The luxury utilitarian outerwear company Mr and Mrs Italy will be opening stores in Beijing and Miami, and has aims to double sales to $ 100 million in the next five years.
In New York from the company’s headquarters in Rimini, Italy, creative director Geraldina Bassani Antivari detailed some of the brand’s plans. Since joining the company four years ago, sales have increased from $ 1.5 million to $ 47 million. Now the goal is to hit $ 100 million by 2021, she said. She praised chief executive officer and owner Andrea Bucalossi for being “highly organized” and “having that Italian vibe of doing and moving and being quick and fast. Managing sku’s for him is a daily war.”
The eight to 10 producers in Italy that the company relies on know they need to continually research new techniques, cuts and furs. “We don’t want to work with companies that don’t respect the ethical laws,” Antivari said. “We work very closely with all of our wholesalers because we want to be one of those companies that gives service or something that was made for New York or for China.”

Payless Seeks Permission to Shutter 408 Additional Stores

Bankrupt Payless Holdings LLC is asking a St. Louis Bankruptcy Court for permission to shutter another 408 stores.
The footwear retailer, along with 28 affiliated debtors, filed its Chapter 11 petition for bankruptcy court protection on April 4. On May 17, it received the court’s nod to shutter the 389 stores it had planned to close when it filed its voluntary petition. Since then, the company said in court papers that it not only recognized the need to remodel its brick-and-mortar business to align it with worsening retail-industry conditions, it also analyzed whether it needed to close any additional stores to align with its broader financial and operational restructuring. The company, excluding the 389 stores set for closure, still has 3,000 unexpired leases in North America. In the macro picture, Payless has 4,000-plus stores across more than 30 countries.
Among the criteria for whether a store should be closed, the company considered profitability on an earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, amortization and restructuring basis; opportunity for rent concessions from landlords; cash flow, and ability to transfer sales to nearby locations.
Payless said in the court document filed last week that it could close fewer stores if ongoing negotiations with landlords result in consensual modifications

Mall-Favorite BCBG Is Closing Some Of Its Stores

We’ve got some sad news concerning one of your favorite high school shopping hangouts.

Bloomberg reports that BCBG Max Azria Group will close some of its 570 stores, which includes 175 locations in the United States (it’s not closing all of its stores, contrary to certain reports). The design house, founded in 1989 by designer Max Azria, will move its focus to e-commerce, licensing and boutiques.

“Like so many other great brands, BCBG has been negatively impacted by the growth in online sales and shifts in customer shopping patterns and, as a result, has too large a physical retail footprint,” BCBG spokesperson Seth Lubove said in an emailed statement to The Huffington Post. “This realignment will include a reduced focus on free-standing brick-and-mortar stores, concentrating more on in-store boutiques and, increasing our online presence as well as licensing.”

He added, “BCBG is a world class designer and producer of apparel, which with the necessary changes, should be able to be successful. We are looking at a variety of options to accomplish the restructuring of the company.”

BCBG is the latest in a long line of retailers that have shuttered physical locations in favor of online shopping, like Delia*s and The Limited, which recently announced the closure of all 250 of its stores.

While we reminisce about past prom dresses (guilty) and think back to all those “sexy” bandage dresses we wanted to buy in high school but had no place to go in them, let’s take it back to when Miley Cyrus collaborated with Max Azria for a Wal-Mart collection:

Todd Snyder to Close Japanese Stores

TOKYO – Todd Snyder is pulling out of Japan, the market that was home to his brand’s first flagship stores.
Snyder opened his first Japan location in the hip area of Harajuku in March 2014. Called Todd Snyder Townhouse, the three-story shop carries his men’s line, as well as products from other select brands. After the Tokyo store, locations in Kyoto, Osaka and Yokohama followed.
At the time of the Tokyo opening, Snyder said, “Hopefully this is a sign of things to come.” What he likely didn’t realize at the time was that one of the things to come would be a deal with American Eagle Outfitters to sell his company for $ 11 million.
Since acquiring both the Todd Snyder brand and Tailgate, a collegiate-campus retail concept started by the designer and his father in 1991, American Eagle has been investing in store openings and flashy advertising campaigns in the U.S. The first Stateside Todd Snyder flagship will open on Dec.  6 in the Madison Park area of Manhattan, and a Tailgate store opened at the University of Wisconsin in Madison in May, with others planned for next year. The “People Power” Family Superbook: Book 13. Shopping Guide (Online Shopping, Product Reviews, Department Stores, Trade Shows, Closeout – Wholesale, Factory Outlets)

In my opinion, unless you’re a total introvert, agoraphobic, disabled or too lazy to leave the house, your best bet to buy most things you need is locally. Go to the Yellow Pages, read your local newspapers, drive around the shopping areas, go to local free ad websites and talk to people you know about what you need. I generally buy most of my stuff from the big department stores but if I need something like furniture, I’ll check out the furniture stores on the poor side of the town because the prices for the same goods are often much cheaper than a store in the higher class part of town plus you can often haggle with the owner on a cash deal. By shopping on the poor side of town at supermarkets for food, you can often save several dollars on a load of groceries. Beyond that, I generally go to the thrift stores a few times a year to buy t-shirts, clothes and anything else that strikes my fancy as I look around.

Scotch & Soda to Open Additional Stores in New York and Los Angeles

Scotch & Soda is extending its U.S. retail presence.
The Amsterdam-based casual sportswear brand opened a Beverly Hills location this month and will open a Williamsburg, Brooklyn, unit in November.
The Beverly Hills location will be Scotch & Soda’s second Los Angeles shop — it has a store in Venice Beach. The 1,500-square-foot space at 365 North Beverly Drive carries both the men’s and women’s collections. The store features Scotch & Soda’s interior design signatures — brass fittings, glass cabinets and wooden herringbone flooring — with additions including a wall adorned with hanging plants and a facade made from handmade Moroccan tiles.
The Williamsburg store joins Scotch & Soda’s three New York City boutiques. The retailer opened a Greenwich Village shop in May. The 1,800-square-foot Williamsburg unit will be located at 240-242 Bedford Avenue and also carry both the men’s and women’s assortments. The store, which is housed in a former industrial factory hall, will boast high ceilings along with concrete and steel details.
In 2014, the brand recruited Ari Hoffman, previously of Gant and Benetton, to serve as chief executive officer of its U.S. operations. Hoffman was tasked with further developing the retailer’s U.S. business. Scotch & Soda has more than 150 stores

INTRODUCTIONOVERVIEWThis study covers the world outlook for radio, television, and consumer electronics stores across more than 200 countries. For each year reported, estimates are given for the latent demand, or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.), for the country in question (in millions of U.S. dollars), the percent share the country is of the region and of the globe. These comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a country vis-à-vis others. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each country and across countries, latent demand estimates are created. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved. This study does not report actual sales data (which are simply unavailable, in a comparable or consistent manner in virtually all of the 230 countries of the world). This study gives, however, my estimates for the worldwide latent demand, or the P.I.E, for radio, television, and consumer electronics stores. It also shows how the P.I.E. is divided across the world’s regional and national markets. For each country, I also show my estimates of how the P.I.E. grows over time (positive or negative growth). In order to make these estimates, a multi-stage methodology was employed that is often taught in courses on international strategic planning at graduate schools of business.

Thalhimers Department Stores

Thalhimers Department Stores

Thalhimers was founded in Richmond in 1842 by German Jewish immigrant William Thalhimer as a humble dry goods store. It expanded over the years to become a 26-store chain across the Southeast under the leadership of William’s great-grandson, William B. Thalhimer Jr. It boasted the latest in clothing, shoes, and accessories for the entire family, the most modern of housewares, and gourmet foods and baked goods, including the iconic six-layer chocolate cake. Through decades of dramatic political and social change, Thalhimers stood strong, guided by the overarching philosophies of honesty, integrity, quality, and service. Loyal and devoted employees were the heart of Thalhimers, becoming part of the extended Thalhimer family. Sadly, in 1992, as a result of retail consolidation, the Thalhimer name was dropped and the flagship downtown Richmond store closed. A 150-year legacy ended, leaving behind cherished memories, stories, and images.

Millions In Cocaine Delivered To German Grocery Stores, Plus Bananas

Whoops!

Nearly 400 kilograms of cocaine were hidden in banana shipments sent to Aldi supermarkets in and around Berlin, Germany, earlier this week, according to news site The Local. Police spokesman Stefan Redlich called the error a “logistical mistake,” Agence France-Presse reported.

German police initially valued the haul at close to $ 17 million, but they may have lowballed it. An updated statement said the drugs had a high degree of purity and a street price of nearly $ 44 million.

The shipments are presumed to have traveled a well-known drug smuggling route from Colombia to Europe, Germany’s Deutsche Welle reported. Investigators were reportedly still searching through Aldi’s banana supply for other illicit imports.

Amazingly, this is not the first time that Aldi stores in Germany have received cocaine with their bananas. In January 2014, The Local reported that police had found 140 kilos of the drug in those supermarkets in what was hailed as the second-largest bust in Berlin in 35 years.

Someone’s in trouble.

Apple Watch Debuts in London, Paris Stores

TIME TRAVELERS: Apple Watch made its European retail debut on Friday morning with upscale shop-in-shops at Selfridges in London, where the brand filled the windows with an installation of iridescent butterflies, and Galeries Lafayette in Paris.
The stores were packed with mostly male shoppers testing out the 38 iterations of the multitasking watch that’s part personal trainer and executive assistant, part navigation device and instant chat tool. Oh, and it tells the time, too.
“This is just fabulous: It syncs with the iPhone, which means you have the freedom to leave your phone on your desk and still be able to check on everything,” said Herbert Yip, a Hong Kong native who was visiting London with his family.
Yip said he was leaning toward ordering the sports model. “I was going to buy another device to use as my health kit, but when I knew the Apple was coming out with its own, I waited,” he explained.
The Apple Watch shop at Selfridges is located in the Wonder Room on the ground floor, which is also home to brands such as Bulgari, Chopard, Cartier and Tiffany & Co.
Apple has filled the space — which is permanent and spans about more than 1,000 square feet — with towering ficus

7 Clothing Stores With Home Decor Departments Are Truly The Best Of Both Worlds

The only thing better than picking up an amazing new outfit? Nabbing some fabulous home decor while you’re at it. We don’t mean a cute little jewelry tray you stumbled upon in the accessories section — we’re talking full-blown furniture options, lighting and all the accents you could ever hope for. Basically, everything you’d find at, say, HomeGoods or West Elm, only alongside some more fashion-oriented finds.

And the best part? Many of these home departments are either growing, like the one at Anthropologie, or are on the newer side and ready to expand their aesthetic to home accents, like the ones at Nanette Lepore.

So go ahead, get your one-stop shopping on.

ModCloth

modcloth home decor
If you have a retro taste in decor and long for the perfect quirky throw pillow, this is the place for you. Though they don’t sell furniture, ModCloth an eclectic assortment of everything else you need to make your home a bit more charming.

Urban Outfitters

uo home decor
Any home can be transformed into a Brooklyn loft with the ultra-trendy offerings found here. From furniture to ultra-trendy shelving (and everything in between), you can find something that’s a perfect combo of hipster and chic for every room in the house. And don’t forget about the humorous accessories selection with all of the pop-culture references you can think of.

Anthropologie

anthropologie home decor
Looking for a more sophisticated, European version of Urban Outfitters’ home collection? You’ll find it here. They offer just as much, if not more, in terms of furniture, accents and gorgeous hardware, but with a more romantic, feminine touch.

H&M

hm home decor
Offering possibly the most extensive array of accents and accessories from this list, the H&M home department has something for every taste. Though you won’t find furniture here, you can find pillows for the edgier, more modern home, kitchen accessories and plates for the rustic abode and even personality-filled coasters that work in any space.

Kate Spade

kate spade home decor
The same colorfully preppy aesthetic seen in Kate Spade handbags and jewelry is what you’ll find in their kitchen and office supplies. There’s also an “odds and ends” category filled with fun finds like mustached bottle openers, and dinnerware collections that belong in the registry of your dreams.

Nanette Lepore

nanette lepore home decor
This is the perfect destination if you’re looking for feminine, boho-style bedding and textiles reminiscent of the designer’s equally bohemian fashion collections.

Ralph Lauren

ralph lauren home decor
If you’re looking for something clean, classic and luxurious, you cannot go wrong with Ralph Lauren. While the designer brand will cost you a bit more, the extensive array of furniture and accent pieces is pretty much as timeless as the Polo logo itself. With that in mind, go here if you’re ready to make a long-term investment in say bedding or lighting for your home.

Ikea Advertises Adoptable Dogs In Stores, Because Every Home Needs A Rescue Pup

Furniture might help make a living space comfortable, but nothing makes a house a home like a furry best friend.

With that in mind, some Ikea stores are now featuring cardboard cutouts of adoptable dogs in their showrooms amid the furniture, AFP Relaxnews reported. The cutouts have tags on them with QR codes that shoppers can scan to learn more about the individual dogs.

The idea to display the pets inside the store started in Singapore as a collaboration between Ikea and two animal shelters, according to Business Insider. Together they formed the project Home for Hope.

Now, an Ikea store in Tempe, Arizona, is joining in on the innovative plan to find homes for rescue animals.

“We thought it was a perfect way to show people what their home would look like with a pet in it,” Becky Blaine, Ikea Tempe’s marketing director, told the outlet.

All of the six animals featured in cutouts at the store in Tempe have now been adopted from the Arizona Humane Society, and more cutouts will be exhibited in the store at the end of the month, according to the outlet. At least eight pups have been adopted in Singapore so far, according to the Home for Hope website.
