Michael Kors, Bette Midler Open Gate to Essex Street Community Garden

On a crowded block of Brooklyn, Michael Kors and Bette Middler managed to make the longest day of the year feel like a walk in the park — most literally.
Kors and his husband, Lance Le Pere, joined Midler Thursday night to kick off the New York Restoration Project’s grand opening of the Essex Street Community Garden with a ribbon cutting and summer solstice block party for the Brooklyn neighborhood.
“This is a gift from the heart,” Midler said before cutting the ribbon with garden shears. “We want you to take it into your hearts and let it be the special place in your lives. Please, it’s yours. It’s for you. Enjoy it.”
Kors and his husband partnered with Midler and the NYPR to develop the community park — a 3,200-square-foot green haven that can be used for growing, gathering and celebrating alike. The space will be the first NYC Community garden to be 100 percent solar-powered, featuring a gazebo, Wi-Fi, a projection screen for events and plenty of greenery hand-planted by Kors, Le Pere and NYRP community gardeners.
“I’m a born and bred New Yorker, and I think in New York, what’s the greatest luxury? The greatest luxury is space and nature,” Kors

Gentle Monster Pops Up at Dover Street Market New York

Gentle Monster has popped up at Dover Street Market New York.
The South Korean eyewear brand’s ephemeral boutique is mounted through June 18 on Dover Street Market’s first floor.
A limited-edition, black-and-gold version of Gentle Monster’s Cobalt style has been created to mark the occasion.
While an eyewear brand, Gentle Monster is also regarded for its innovative and experimental retailing strategies. It employs carpenters and architects full-time to execute conceptual interior design projects.
For Dover Street Market, the brand has found inspiration in the extraterrestrial. The company has dubbed its installation “Passengers,” predicated on a narrative where “a crew of extraterrestrial creatures embark on a passage through time and space in search of their next home. Collecting precious stones and flowers along the way, the crew is able to produce energy for their ship and tools.”
This manifests as wire, wood and stone sculptures that resemble the work of artist Nick Cave.
“Dover Street Market is a resting place for creation and magnitude, and our presence within the DSM New York space feels natural because of this. Our pursuit of experimental and episodic content is rooted in the in-person experience. It’s in these conceptual spaces that our creations are able to blur the divide between eyewear

STREET SIGNS: McDonald’s Dabbles in Streetwear

Joseph Robinson is embarking on one of his biggest collaborations to date.
The founder of Joe Freshgoods and Don’t Be Mad, independent streetwear brands based in Chicago, received an e-mail from McDonald’s requesting that he design merchandise for the fast food behemoth.
“I was hesitant at first, because I’m such an independent brand and when you start partnering with companies like McDonald’s sometimes it’s like you have sold out,” said Robinson. “But at the end of the day I thought it would be inspiring to other kids who want to start brands and show them that they can do it, too.”
To build buzz around the launch of Mix by Sprite Tropic Berry, a new soft drink that will be exclusive to McDonald’s, the company recruited Robinson to design a capsule collection of racing-inspired merchandise that will be available at locations in Atlanta, Chicago, Los Angeles and New York on May 25.

Starting at 2 p.m. local time, customers who purchase the Mix drink can take their receipt to a line to receive a piece from the assortment, which includes a short-sleeve T-shirt, a long-sleeve T-shirt, socks and a wool and leather varsity jacket covered in McDonald’s, Sprite and Joe Freshgoods logos. Diamond Disruptor Vashi Opens Store in London’s Mayfair Near Bond Street

DOUBLE THE DIAMONDS: Vashi, the diamond jewelry brand that allows customers to design their own rings and other jewels, has planted a flag at 13a Grafton Street in London, not far from rivals such as De Beers, Boodles, Mappin & Webb, Cartier and Tiffany & Co., which are all located on or around Bond Street in Mayfair.
The 1,000-square-foot store is a five-minute walk from Vashi’s Piccadilly flagship and features an on-site jewelry workshop, a diamond-shaped work surface for collaboration with jewelers and client consultation spaces.
It’s smaller than the unit at 46 Piccadilly, which spans 1,500 square feet over two floors, but at a party this week to mark the opening, founder and chief executive officer Vashi Domínguez said the store serves a specific purpose. “Here, we attract the Bond Street customer. There’s not a big customer overlap with the Piccadilly store.”
Such is the diversity of central London shopping that certain neighborhoods, even if they border each other, can attract a different clientele. Piccadilly is more about tourists and locals, while Grafton Street attracts ultra-high-net-worth individuals and big-spending foreigners.
Although the stores’ addresses are different, Vashi’s approach is the same: Domínguez, whose background is in diamond wholesale and retail e-commerce, wants his customers

Street Signs: Will Streetwear Customers Buy a Tie?

Things are changing quickly within men’s wear. When WWD visited Guillermo Andrade a few months ago at 424 on Fairfax, the Los Angeles store he founded in 2010, Dior Homme was setting up a pop-up and Kris Van Assche was the creative lead. Now Van Assche is at Berluti, Kim Jones is at Dior Homme and Virgil Abloh is the creative director at Louis Vuitton men’s, signaling an arrival of sorts for the streetwear category.
Things have also changed with Andrade, who has his own label, named 424, that is carried at retailers including Barneys New York and Selfridges. Andrade has developed a design identity with his 424 armbands, hoodies and T-shirts with subtle social messages, and for spring is inching into new territory with a few tailored pieces.
Tailored clothing isn’t completely foreign to streetwear. Supreme created a seersucker suit with Brooks Brothers in 2014 and Off-White’s fall 2018 men’s wear collection was based on workplace uniforms. Andrade’s expansion could indicate how streetwear might evolve as it aims to stake out more floor space in department stores and grow up with its customers.
WWD spoke to Andrade about growing his L.A.-made streetwear brand, the viability of the category and the possibility of him taking

Street Signs: Slam Jam Brings Innovative Distribution Model to North America

After almost three decades in business, Luca Benini, the founder of Slam Jam, which is based in Ferrara, Italy, decided it was time to enter the North American market.
“The key objective for Slam Jam is to go international with our distribution by 2020,” said Benini. “Approaching America is a crucial pillar of the strategy, with the very valuable support of market specialist Point.”
Benini partnered with Point Intl., which includes Jason Sherman, Jason Benta and Jordan Thomas, who have held stints within sales at brands including Diadora Heritage, Under Armour and Billionaire Boys Club. They built a relationship organically and got to know each other during Paris fashion week and Miami Art Basel.
Slam Jam is a retailer, distributor and operates production facilities. Long before the luxury and streetwear categories were bedfellows, Benini was connecting these worlds and rooting his brands in skate, art and music. Late last year, Slam Jam teamed with Carhartt WIP to open Spazio Maiocchi, an art space in Milan that hosts exhibitions and fashion events and Benini has helped revive and reposition heritage brands such as Kappa.
In 1989, Benini started distributing Stüssy in the European market and Carhartt WIP quickly followed. Slam Jam currently handles the Italian distribution for

Dover Street Market Ginza Nabs Kim Jones GU Collaboration

GU GOES TO GINZA: Dover Street Market Ginza will be the first store to stock the new Kim Jones collaboration with GU, the lower-priced sister brand of Uniqlo, WWD has learned. The collection will go to sale at DSM Ginza on March 19, two days before the official GU launch. According to a DSM spokesperson, the retailer will also stock exclusive items through a special installation at Ginza’s Elephant Room.

Jones revealed the collaboration, Kim Jones GU Production, via an Instagram post Wednesday and the line is inspired by the designer’s own label, which ceased operations in 2008. Jones recently left his position as men’s artistic director for Louis Vuitton and has yet to disclose future professional plans, although speculation is mounting that he might be the man to succeed Christopher Bailey at the creative helm of Burberry.
In addition to Dover Street Market Ginza, the collaboration will be available online and at select GU stores in Japan and Taiwan, and at all GU stores in Hong Kong.

What you like about Pitti: It’s a meeting place for some of the best-dressed men, from all around the world. It encompasses a broad range of styles and celebrates everything from streetwear to tailoring at its best.
What you don’t want to see anymore at Pitti: Poorly executed dandyism. To be a dandy can be a beautiful style when done with the right attitude but it’s much trickier than it seems. Because of its loudness, its mistakes attract the eye like a roadside accident.
Favorite street style moment at Pitti: I love shooting the January edition of Pitti Uomo, because the low sun makes perfect light for shooting all day.
Your favorite street style icons: What draws me to Pitti every year is the new crop of gentleman that inspire me. But I am also very proud that I discovered some of today’s street style stars like Alessandro Squarzi, Domenico Gianfrate, Lino Ieluzzi.
What you expect to trend at Pitti this January in terms of street style: I never look for trends; I’m looking to create images that inspire.

Street Signs: Inside the Restless Mind of Kith’s Ronnie Fieg

NEW YORK — It’s easy to imagine loving shoes, but imagine loving shoes so much that, at 13, you’d rather spend time with them in a stockroom than hang out with friends. Now imagine, 10 or so years later, partnering with Nike, Asics, Adidas and others to rework the designs you used to study in that stockroom. And then imagine finally selling those shoes and wearing those shoes, but, to your surprise, they don’t quite fit. This is how Ronnie Fieg, creative director and chief executive officer of Kith, feels at the moment.
“Where I am right now is like walking around in a pair of shoes and they look fly and you love them, but they are too small. Well, actually, they are too big now. It’s not too big. I don’t want to say that, but the business is a lot bigger than I imagined,” Fieg said in an interview at Kith’s brand new SoHo office in Manhattan, which is a stone’s throw away from its recently opened store on Lafayette Street and a couple of floors above Kering’s New York headquarters. “I’m always uncomfortable because I’ve never been here before. There is no formula. There is no guideline.

Street Signs: Commonwealth Rises in the Arts District

It’s style, not fashion, Commonwealth seeks to serve under its roof as the streetwear specialty retailer marks a move to the Los Angeles Arts District.
The business, started by Omar Quiambao and Larry Incognito in 2004 as a concept shop with the tag line “For the Greater Good,” brings its street- and skate-inspired boutique to yet another growing pocket of the Arts District where Silverlake Wine, Guerrilla Tacos, Base Coat Nail Salon, CES Gallery and the Museum of Ice Cream all reside. Just footsteps away, Dover Street Market is expected in the spring.
The area reminds Quiambao of New York, where he last resided, and is close to where he now lives in downtown. Opening the 1,500-square-foot shop represents the first time he’s living in the same city as a Commonwealth store.
Quiambao, a graduate of Pratt Institute, has spent the better part of nearly two decades now being a purveyor of what those standing from the outside might call youth culture melded with skate and streetwear. Commonwealth’s brand of that lifestyle mixes high fashion with the street for a store that includes brands such as Pleasures, Wacko Maria, Brain Dead, Padmore & Barnes, Stone Island, APC and Comme des Garçons Play, among

Dover Street Market Hosts Festive Open House

HOLIDAY INSTALLATIONS: With Christmas approaching, Dover Street Market hosted an event to celebrate with a series of signature installations from various brands and designers, and marked Comme des Garçons’ Re/tartan Re/energy Holiday campaign launch.
London-based stylists Charlotte Stockdale and Katie Lyall, co-editors in chief of brand new magazine-cum-posterbook Chaos SixtyNine, held a “teenage bachelor bedroom” themed installation in the basement. “We wanted it to be a space where you could put up all the posters from the magazine freely. That seemed naturally to be a teenage bedroom,” said Lyall.
The space was also used to launch the Chaos Bruv Club Collection, as well as special merchandise. “The Bruv Club is like men’s suiting, racer graphics, a bit skate and a bit gentleman,” said Stockdale. “It’s a nice mix of the two. Bruv Club to us is all-inclusive: boys, girls, anyone up for a bit of fun.”
While the second issue of the biannual title won’t be out until at least May of next year, Charlotte and Katie have collaborations up their sleeves — the first of which will be with Hayden Kays, a British artist influenced by Fifties pop art. It will include custom graphics printed onto Chaos phone cases. They will be available

Street Signs: Roc-a-Fella Cofounder on Building Streetwear Brands

On Nov. 30, Nike will celebrate the 35th anniversary of the Air Force One by releasing five different styles designed by Errolson Hugh of Acronym, Virgil Abloh of Off-White, rapper Travis Scott, Don Crawley of Just Don, and Roc-a-Fella Records cofounder Kareem “Biggs” Burke.
Burke is the unofficial godfather of the group, and in many ways planted the seed from which the rest of the collaborators sprouted. It starts with Roc-a-Fella, which he founded with Jay-Z and Damon Dash in 1994, then moves on to Kanye West, who signed to Roc-a-Fella in the early Aughts. Both Abloh and Crawley, better known as Don C, are directly connected to West — Abloh was his creative director at one point and Crawley served as the road manager and DJ from time to time. And Scott is signed to Good Music, which is West’s record label.
“This is the offspring of what we’ve built,” said Burke. “To see Virgil and Don C’s success, I love that. People talk about legacy and how I want to be remembered and I just want that family tree to keep growing.”
The Roc-a-Fella Air Force One is the only shoe from the capsule that isn’t an entirely new design. In

Balenciaga Brings Copy Shop Concept to Dover Street Market

DO IT YOURSELF: Balenciaga is bringing its copy shop concept to London’s Dover Street Market.
The personalized T-shirt printing service, first unveiled during its takeover of Paris concept store Colette last summer, will be installed in the store from Nov. 30 to Dec. 17, the brand said.
Touch screens will allow customers to create their own designs, using a selection of Balenciaga logos and graphics, to be printed instantly. The T-shirts will be available in black, white, gray and red, in two sizes for men and women, and will feature the mention “Balenciaga Do It Yourself Ts” on the back.
The project is an offshoot of Balenciaga creative director Demna Gvasalia’s men’s wear show for fall exploring the corporate world, with items including sweatshirts bearing the slogan of the brand’s parent company Kering.
To mark the inauguration of the copy shop on Nov. 30, Balenciaga will offer an exclusive colorway of its Triple S sneaker in all Dover Street Market stores worldwide. The London installation will also feature a sculpture by Mark Jenkins and video screens.

Apple Flagship on London’s Regent Street Hit by Thieves

APPLE ATTACK: Apple’s flagship on Regent Street was hit by burglars who robbed thousands of pounds worth of iPhones, iPads and Apple watches early Monday morning.
The thieves, armed with hammers, broke into the store by smashing the windows with mopeds. They threatened the security guard with a hammer and remained inside the store for just under three minutes. They escaped and left a red scooter inside.
A Metropolitan Police spokesman confirmed the incident: “Police in Westminster were called at [12:45 a.m.] on Monday to reports of an aggravated burglary. Ten suspects on five mopeds were reported to have smashed their way into the store and taken Apple products. Two iPhone Xs were later recovered near Kings Cross [train station].”
No arrests have been made, and the police could not confirm the value of the stolen goods.
Smash-and-grab raids have been increasingly frequent in central London, with Mappin & Webb’s Regent Street flagship and House of Fraser on Oxford Street robbed in a similar way last month.

STREET SIGNS: The Making of a Celebrity Sneaker Deal

Reebok spent a year courting Future.
The relationship began in 2015 when the company started seeding the artist, whose real name is Nayvadius Wilburn, with shoes to wear. Then the team began attending his shows, inviting him to Reebok’s headquarters in Massachusetts and detailing how both parties could help each other.
“They made an effort to connect with him,” said Ebonie Ward, Future’s brand manager. “It wasn’t about sending e-mails. They told him they didn’t want to take advantage of him as an artist and use his fan base. They wanted to build a partnership with him. That’s what sealed the deal with Future. It wasn’t about him throwing on a pair of shoes and thinking people are going to just buy them.”
Athletic companies tapping celebrities, specifically hip-hop artists, isn’t a new concept. In fact, 14 years ago, Reebok offered Jay-Z a deal — the first of its kind — that led to the commercially successful S. Carter sneakers, which, when released, were one of the brand’s best-selling products. But the structure of today’s deals, and the climate around them, has evolved and Future’s relationship with Reebok reflects how the market has shifted.

Street Signs: ‘Friendly’ Sneakersnstuff Rolls Out Welcome Mat in New York

Erik Fagerlind, who cofounded the specialty sneaker chain Sneakersnstuff with Peter Jansson in 1999, says 80 percent of its business now comes from e-commerce sales — up from 50 percent five years ago. But physical retail remains a significant part of its growth strategy outside of home country of Sweden, having planted shops in London, Paris, Berlin and now New York.
“In a world where everything is available and accessible, you have to provide a little bit more than product,” Fagerlind said. “You have to provide the service to be relevant with your consumer.”
Sneakersnstuff will bring its popular concept to New York in early December. The 3,500-square-foot shop will be located in the Meatpacking District, designed by Jenny Askenfors of Bofink Design Studio and feature a basement bar. Wil Whitney, who has deep roots in the New York skate and streetwear scene — he was a former manager at Stüssy, helped start Nom de Guerre, a men’s wear brand and Brooklyn shop that closed in 2010, and most recently worked for Noah — will manage the boutique. There are plans to open a Los Angeles flagship in 2018.

It’s a brand I grew up wearing and loving through my adolescence and now I am in this position to be a part of maintaining and growing the brand on all different verticals.”
Vision was founded 40 years ago by Brad Dorfman, who started out producing skateboards before introducing Vision Street Wear. Authentic Brands Group acquired Vision Street Wear, which works with partners in Japan and South Korea, in 2014.
Nick Woodhouse, president and chief marketing officer for Authentic Brands Group, believes Aoki, who played at his bachelor party, is the ideal person to build up the brand.
“I always knew what an amazing creative force Steve is,” said Woodhouse. “He produces terrific content, has an amazing social following and people are fanatical about him. He resonates with youth, he’s

5 Denim Shirt Upgrades Inspired by Charlize Theron’s Latest Street Style Look

Charlize Theron just flipped the script on a wardrobe staple. The Atomic Blonde actress was spotted on the streets of New York City this week wearing a Stella McCartney long-sleeve denim top — with a twist. Her shirt featured super-chic ruffle trim down the front. She paired it with black bottoms, low black boots and a bold red lip for a pop of color. And we basically want to wear the entire look to brunch this weekend.

Theron’s fresh take on the denim button-down feels a bit unexpected thanks to the ruffle detailing (plus, it will set you apart from everyone else in their basic button-front chambray shirts). The look is still neutral enough to go all the bottoms in your closet, but it feels elevated compared to basic button-downs and tees.

Theron’s exact style costs $ 735 if you’re looking for a splurge. If not, we rounded up five similar, budget-friendly styles below.

Street Signs: Louis Vuitton x Supreme Stirs Global Frenzy, but a Well-Managed One

Megacrowds — many destined to be disappointed — greeted the long-awaited arrival of the Louis Vuitton x Supreme collaboration in pop-up shops around the world on Friday.
Just as Michael Burke, chairman and chief executive officer of Louis Vuitton, previously told WWD, the brand revealed the location of the pop-ups on Instagram only one day, or sometimes hours, before the release.
“There will be no marketing and no press release. We won’t be pandering to the customer. It’s all about peer-to-peer communication. We provide a very minimum amount of information and let the people judge us from there,” Burke said.
As reported, the collection, unveiled at Paris Men’s Fashion Week in January, is being sold exclusively through eight pop-ups in Paris, London, Miami, Los Angeles, Tokyo, Beijing, Seoul and Sydney. With the exception of the Miami pop-up, located in an exhibition space on the third floor of Vuitton’s Design District store, the stores have no prior connection with either brand. The Sydney pop-up is located at 95 Roscoe Street in Bondi Beach, while the Tokyo space opened in the Minami-Aoyama district, where more than 7,000 people lined up outside starting from the late hours of Thursday night.
At 8:30 a.m., only 400 of those

New West End Company Lays Out Its Vision for Oxford Street

MODERN VISION: The New West End Company, the U.K. firm that represents businesses across London’s West End area including Oxford, Regent and Bond Streets, has released a study that lays out its vision for the evolution of Oxford Street.
The study, called “The Future of the Oxford Street District,” was created in partnership with the public realm and urban design consultancy firm Publica, economic consultancy agency Volterra and property consultants Gerald Eve. It highlights a series of recommendations for the busy shopping thoroughfare which would improve and diversify the experience on offer, as well as create additional revenue streams.
Taking into account ongoing issues such as air quality and the need for traffic-free zones, the study recommends the creation of clear pedestrian and cycle routes that will enable visitors to safely move around, as well as public areas such as play spaces or open green spaces. The organization of more cultural or community events in the evening is also part of the recommendations, as an answer to the need to enhance the street’s evening economy.
The study takes into account the increased amount of visitors on the street, which is estimated to reach 260 million annually following the completion of the Elizabeth line,

Bergdorf’s Men’s Store Ups Its Street Cred

NEW YORK — Bergdorf Goodman is going street.
Over the past two years the upscale retailer has increasingly been partnering with some of the more trend-setting streetwear labels on special capsules and in-store events to update the mix on the third floor of its Goodman’s men’s store.
Brands from John Elliott and Kith to Off-White and NikeLab have worked with the retailer on special installations, and the latest one will hit today when Kith’s second capsule for the store is delivered.
Exclusives are nothing new for retailers. Merchants are constantly negotiating with vendors for something unique they can offer their customers that also differentiates them from their competitors.
But in the past few years Bergdorf Goodman has pushed the envelope, aligning with hot brands that have generally eschewed traditional retail. The result has been a win-win for both.
“When we joined three years ago, we examined the third floor and where we saw fashion moving,” said Bruce Pask, Bergdorf’s men’s fashion director. “Then we set a direction to put designers in place to address that.”
So together with Melissa Lowenkron, senior vice president of men’s, women’s footwear, handbags and beauty, the store worked initially with John Elliott, who was the first of the new breed of men’s designers to create

This Comparison Of Donald Trump And ‘Sesame Street’ Is Wonderful

As you may have heard, Donald Trump wants to cut funding to the National Endowment for the Arts and the Corporation For Public Broadcasting. While “Sesame Street” is not directly funded by these organizations, the cuts could eliminate the local PBS stations that air the beloved children’s show.

But why would Donald Trump want to get rid of “Sesame Street”? The answer: because it’s his complete opposite.

Dylan Marron from Seriously TV gives us a fantastic side-by-side comparison of Donald Trump and “Sesame Street,” which shows just how diametrically opposed the two are, and, really, have always been.

11 Moments On ‘Sesame Street’ That Championed Diversity And Inclusion

This week, “Sesame Street” announced that its character Julia, who has autism, will make her TV debut in April in an episode that will teach kids about the disorder. That trailblazing decision marks just one of the series’ many groundbreaking moments.

Throughout its 47-year history, “Sesame Street” seems to have always embraced diversity and inclusion by having its Muppets and their human friends discuss important issues (like bullying and divorce) and reflect people kids actually see day to day (like children whose parents are in the military).

Though there are many more to choose, here are 11 other important moments from the creative people behind the beloved show.

Detroit Just Named A Street After Stevie Wonder, And He’s Thrilled

Stevie Wonder moved out of Detroit years ago, but he’ll always have a home in Motown ― and now he can also lay claim to his very own street.

The legendary musician joined Mayor Mike Duggan Wednesday for the public unveiling of “Stevie Wonder Avenue,” a renamed portion of Milwaukee Avenue north of downtown. The new name is marked with a street sign at the corner of Woodward Avenue.

Prepping for the #StevieWonder street dedication ceremony today at Woodward and Milwaukee in #Detroit. #Street4StevieDetroit

A photo posted by carlotta.tutt.holloway (@carlottath) on

“This is just an amazing moment,” Wonder said at the dedication, his brother and Rep. John Conyers (D-Mich.) by his side. “I’m going to freeze this moment … and remember it forever.”

The spot has some significance for Wonder, who once lived on Milwaukee Avenue, according to the Detroit News. A mile west is Hitsville U.S.A., the former headquarters of Motown Records ― now home to the Motown Museum ― where Wonder got his start.

The artist thanked Conyers, saying the veteran congressman’s fight for equal rights has been an inspiration since his teenage years. Wonder took up the cause of championing social justice issues through his music.

He then took a moment during the celebratory press conference to get “real,” urging fans to focus on unifying the nation in the wake of divisions revealed by the presidential election.

“I’ve never seen none of you,” Wonder said, referencing his lifelong blindness, “so when I hear things about people not liking people because of the color of their skin, it is so absurd to me, so barbaric to me.

“I just say to you in this city, even in this state that has now become, at this point, a red state ― I’m just keeping it real ― don’t let the color of the state define who you are,” he added. “Don’t let negativity say this is what you are.”

Before the election, Wonder quipped that voting for President-elect Donald Trump would be like asking the blind musician to drive you to the hospital in an emergency.

“We are on a journey,” he said Wednesday. “When I think about this street, now being Stevie Wonder Avenue, I want all of us to walk down the street that leads us to a place of humanity and equality, of fairness and respect for each other.”

Wonder, 66, was born Stevland Hardaway Judkins in Saginaw, Michigan, and spent his childhood in Detroit. He was a musical prodigy, reportedly teaching himself to play the piano, drums and harmonica by age 10. A year later, Motown founder Berry Gordy offered him a record deal, and in 1963, “Little” Stevie Wonder landed his first of many No. 1 hits with the spirited live recording “Fingertips, Pt. 2.”

He was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in the 1980s, was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2014, and has won more than 20 Grammys

“Naming this street in his honor is reflective of the profound impact that he has had on both the city of Detroit and Motown’s legacy,” Robin Terry, Motown Museum chairwoman and CEO, said in a statement ahead of the dedication.

It’s not the only new honor bestowed on Wonder. News site Slate has declared this “Wonder Week,” delving into the artist’s discography and his enduring influence on popular culture.

And if you read through Slate’s growing list of articles, you may as well listen to a seasonally appropriate soundtrack ― so here’s a compilation of Wonder’s Christmas songs

Saving the Kilda Street Zoo

Saving the Kilda Street Zoo

Vagas is a native of Pondera. She was born there and has spent her entire life in the little town. It is a sleepy gathering of several thousand people near the base of the Sierra Nevada Mountains in central California. The residents are very different than in most California towns. They rarely hurry anywhere. They seem to have all the time in the world. Most of the businesses depend on tourists and travelers passing through. There are always new faces, which will probably not be seen again in the stores and restaurants. Oddly dressed outsiders wander up and down the main street stretching their legs after driving all day. The two motels at the north and south ends of town always fill up as the sun begins to set each evening. Weekends and especially holidays are very busy times in Pondera. The Pondera town zoo has always been part of Vagas’ life too, at least as far back as she can remember. She and Midori have spent many wonderful days there watching the various animals. It isn’t a big zoo-like in a city. The entrance is on Kilda Street. There is a tall brown adobe type of wall across the front with evenly spaced windows on both sides of the opening where the ticket booth stands. There’s a sign on the front of the booth with the hours of operation and .00 general admission in big letters on it. Children under the age of twelve get in for .00. Kids under the age of six get in free. The ticket booth is one of those that has a thick pane of glass with a round hole in it to talk through and a square cut-out near the bottom for collecting payment and dispensing tickets. In that booth is usually an elderly lady named Mary who has worked there selling tickets for as long as Vagas can remember.

Howard Street Block Party Designed to Reel in Holiday Shoppers

NEW YORK — Holiday shopping can be a competitive sport in certain New York neighborhoods but a cluster of SoHo retailers is banding together for more of a goodwill get-together.
A thousand shoppers are expected to show up for Thursday’s Holiday Block Party on Howard Street. Michele Varian, who moved into the neighborhood in 2001 with her signature lifestyles shop at 27 Howard Street, cooked up the pre-holiday event. She made sure to include an ugly sweater contest. A committee will review participants’ photographs and the winner will be revealed on Friday. Block party goers will also find select discounts and extended hours at such stores as Outdoor Voices, The Arrivals, Roll & Hill and The Affirmation, among others.
Trying to take the pajama trend to new heights, Andy Spade’s Sleepy Jones will host an attempt to break the world record for jumping up and down on a Floyd of Detroit-made platform bed. Not surprisingly, the dress code calls for Sleepy Jones pajamas.
With extended store hours until 9 p.m., Opening Ceremony is aiming to ramp up sales to benefit Kids in Need of Defense, a nonprofit whose goal is to ensure that no refugee or immigrant child deals with the U.S. immigration court

Coach Celebrates Opening of Regent Street Flagship

NEW YORK STATE OF MIND: Following the launch of its new house on Fifth Avenue last week, Coach let the good times roll with a party to mark the opening of a Regent Street flagship on Thursday night.
Located on 206 Regent Street, next door to Stuart Weitzman (which is owned by Coach) the new 27,500 square feet space showcases the brand’s new retail concept.
Designed by creative director Stuart Vevers in collaboration with William Sofield, the shop aims to embody the concept of modern luxury and focuses on customization, with stations offering monogramming and made-to-order services.
It also highlights the brand’s playful spirit, with a metallic sculpture of Rexy the dinosaur, who stomps his way across the brand’s rtw and accessories collections, at the entrance of the store. Rexy also appears in street-facing windows, in the form of a neon pink light installation.
Dancers dressed in dinosaur costumes were the main attraction for party guests, including Kate Moss, Henry Holland, Poppy Delevingne, Erin O’ Connor and Daisy Lowe.
“It feels like a home-away-from-home because my house is filled with dinosaurs. I had a sweet chat with Stuart about it and he said that the message is embracing the child within, which is great. He

Gant Relocates Regent Street Space, Launches New Store Concept

LONDON — After almost seven years at the same address on Regent Street, Gant has crossed the road and moved into a space formerly occupied by Hugo Boss.
The new store, at 184-186 Regent Street, spans 4,449 square feet across two floors and is located between Hamley’s toy store and Kate Spade.
Gant chief executive officer Patrik Nilsson said he prefers the new location, called it the “sunnier side of the street with 60 percent more traffic.”
He also said the new location was a better space, adding that 60 percent of the products stocked in the store had been selected based on research the company had conducted.
The brand has implemented a new store concept, shifting from an “American lifestyle” to a more “cosmopolitan and sophisticated” aesthetic, with plans to roll out the same approach to its other locations globally. The store’s interiors include movable oak furniture and brass fixtures, with the aim of giving it a more contemporary appeal compared with the previous setup, which was fixed.
“We’ve used the oak cut, which is also taken from the history we have,” said chief marketing officer, Brian Grevy.
“But we also wanted to have a space that was smart. Actually the science behind going into this new

Buyers Applaud Street Style, Embellishments at Copenhagen Fashion Week

COPENHAGEN — Forget minimalism. Copenhagen Fashion Week, which ended its three-day run on Friday, was all about colors, prints and embellishments. Buyers praised the region’s cool street-style scene, design talents and trade fairs.
Total exports of Danish fashion rose 1.6 percent to 7.3 billion Danish kroner, or $ 1.1 billion, in the first three months of 2016. This comes after a 6 percent rise in 2015 to 26.3 billion Danish kroner, or $ 3.91 billion at average exchange, according to Dansk Fashion and Textile, the trade association for Danish textile and clothing companies. (The association predicts that total exports of Danish fashion will be up 1 percent for the full year.)
“The currency situation with the British pound is a major concern for our members,” said Michael Hillmose, head of international affairs at Dansk Fashion and Textile, noting that it makes prices of Danish goods increase roughly between 5 and 10 percent for U.K. buyers. “Another concern for the wholesale business is the sales shifting to the big international online players. A third is the negative impact of the Brexit on the British economy and the implications of the U.K. leaving the European Union in the long term,” he said. Danish fashion exports to the U.K. were

Brian Trunzo Leaves Carson Street

Brian Trunzo is leaving Carson Street.
Trunzo cofounded the New York City store in 2012 with Matt Breen, whom he met at law school. He declined to provide details on his reasons for departing or his plans.
Trunzo is leaving the brand while it’s in growth mode. The former lawyers recently relocated the men’s store to a larger space on Greene Street in SoHo and shifted its brand offering to focus more on progressive designer merchandise. They also had plans to set up shop in either Los Angeles, San Francisco, Washington, D.C., or Chicago in fall 2017.
Additionally, the founders launched a separate men’s wear line, Deveaux, earlier this year. The American-made collection, which will be in stores for fall, has been picked up by Totokaelo, United Arrows and Biotop in Japan, and Spruce, a men’s wear store in Chicago that’s set to open this year.
“Carson Street is, and will always be, a defining body of work for me. But there’s more work to do out there,” said Trunzo.

Carson Street to Close Store

Carson Street will cease to exist.
The men’s wear store, which was originally named Carson Street Clothiers, will close its doors on June 15.
In a press release, cofounder Matt Breen stated the following:
“When our doors opened in March 2013, we had one goal: to bring something new to the men’s clothing market, both in New York City and around the world. We approached the business from a “fan-first” perspective, which fueled our desire to continuously bring new product to the market, find and cultivate new brands and relationships, and keep Carson Street interesting to its loyal, amazing customers.”
This closure comes shortly after cofounder Brian Trunzo announced he was leaving the business to pursue different projects stating, “Carson Street is, and will always be, a defining body of work for me. But there’s more work to do out there.”
The retailer seemed to be in growth mode. Just a couple weeks ago WWD reported on Carson Street‘s new, larger store on Greene Street — they closed the Crosby Street Store — and its brand roster revamp, which moved away from tailored clothing and into more progressive designer brands including E. Tautz, Lemaire and J.W. Anderson. The founders’ goal was to merchandise these brands

Brooklyn Beckham’s New Girlfriend, Sonia Ben Ammar, Is a Street Style Star In-The-Making

Brooklyn Beckham has a new girlfriend, and we predict she’ll be a major street style star in no time. Paris-based model Sonia Ben Ammar is stunning, with classic French girl style she displays in full via Instagram. We know the look is about casual basics, plenty of flats, and outfits that have perfect little details you only notice when giving them a thorough once-over, and it’s pretty much check, check, check for the lovely.

Sonia’s style holds true to the sartorial standard: she’s got a super collection of perfect skinny jeans and cozy sweaters that are basic enough, but manage to look effortless when styled together just so. Her accessory game mixes some jealousy-inducing bags with the quirky pieces any 16-year-old girl would like (four of her most recently posted pics show one of those stretchy, thin plastic chokers that first emerged in the ’90s).

MORE: 10 Key Style Differences Between French and American Women

Stat-wise, she’s signed with Next Management and has also done some acting and singing. Her and Brooklyn’s relationship supposedly started when their families were vacationing at the same time in the Maldives, and they’ve moved on from “chaperoned” Paris trips to some Hollywood concert canoodling. For the latter she wore a ring-neck tee and carried a chain-strap orange bag. So cool.

Below, a glance at some of her best outfits to date.

Las Vegas Reunites Rat Pack with Sammy Davis, Jr. Street Naming

For both his children and millions of his fans, the dedication of Sammy Davis Jr. Drive in Las Vegas on Tuesday, September 29, 2015 is a fitting commemoration of the legacy of the legendary entertainer and a living reminder of the lasting contributions he made to the city he loved. The intersection of the newly named avenue (formerly known as Industrial Road) with Frank Sinatra Drive and Dean Martin Drive also pays symbolic tribute to the historic “Rat Pack” that did so much to build Las Vegas into a thriving destination.

Known as “Mr. Show Business,” Sammy had a storied career beginning in vaudeville at age 3. His major credits include the hit songs Candy Man and What Kind of Fool Am I, Broadway plays Golden Boy and Mr. Wonderful and the Rat Pack film Oceans 11.

“My father was the true American dream,” explains Manny Davis, Sammy’s son and administrator of his estate. “He had little education and had enormous adversity to overcome. He put himself through the fire because he had something to prove to himself and to society that nothing could keep him down. Some people were not as courageous to stand up to the oppression of his time. But Sammy did, and he gained the respect of all of his peers, white and black, men and women.”

“The dedication means a lot to our family because Vegas wasn’t always town that was tolerant of African Americans. Dad had to go through the back doors and got substandard treatment at all times. Frank Sinatra saw the dehumanization, and the Rat Pack all took a stand. Thanks to their courage, Sammy helped integrate the city, and the impact on the Civil Rights Movement reverberated throughout the country.”

Manny also sees his father as a trailblazer not only in civil rights but also as an artist and a style maker. “The glamorous lifestyle that is so familiar in the lives of entertainers and movie stars of today was all but forbidden and uncool for African American artists before my father’s time. It started with Sammy Davis, Jr., and I love the fact that he did it. He showed that an African American superstar could work with anyone. The sky was the limit. His music is timeless and will always speak to me and millions of others because he came from a time when the words to the music actually meant something. Every time I listen to a song of his, I feel the truth in the words, and it makes me cry. It seems like it applies directly to my life.”

Manny believes the timing of the Las Vegas ceremony twenty-five years after Sammy’s death coincides with a new surge to bring his life’s work to new audiences. A feature film, a Broadway musical, documentaries and a new biography are on the drawing board. “We get offers but not all deals are good deals, so we have to be selective. There’s always talk of a movie based on his life. I think it would be a tremendous challenge for an actor because Sammy was so talented at so many things, singing, dancing, acting, comedy and more. I’m glad that no one expects me to be like Sammy Davis, Jr. because it’s damn near impossible. Anyone who is going to play his role is going to have to do his homework. He’ll have to be really good.”

Biography of a Tenement House in New York City: An Architectural History of 97 Orchard Street

Biography of a Tenement House in New York City: An Architectural History of 97 Orchard Street

I trace my ancestry back to the Mayflower,” writes Andrew S. Dolkart. “Not to the legendary ship that brought the Pilgrims to Plymouth, Massachusetts, in 1620, but to the more prosaic tenement on the southeast corner of East Broadway and Clinton Street named the Mayflower, where my father was born in 1914 to Russian-Jewish immigrants.” For Dolkart, his father’s experience of being raised in a tenement became a metaphor for the life that was afforded countless immigrant children growing up in Lower Manhattan during the past century. In this revised edition of his classic book, Dolkart presents for us a precise and informative biography of a typical tenement house in New York City that became, in 1988, the site for the Lower East Side Tenement Museum. The author documents, analyzes, and interprets the architectural and social history of this building at 97 Orchard Street, beginning in the 1860s when it was erected, moving on to the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries when the neighborhood started to change, and concluding in the present day as the building is reincarnated as the museum. This edition includes new research on the basement storefronts (specifically the Schneider saloon and the kosher butcher), the backyard privies and their reconstruction, and the new Irish Moore apartment. “Biography of a Tenement House in New York City “is a lasting tribute to the legacy of immigrants and their children, who were part of the transformation of New York City and the fabric of everyday American urban life. Meet the Woman Behind Beyoncé’s Street Style Transformation

2015-08-21-1440178778-8853572-beyoncestreetstyleevolution2.jpg

by EDWARD BARSAMIAN

“She wears the crown for all the work that she’s put into the industry,” says Beyoncé’s personal wardrobe curator, Zerina Akers. “But I also want her to have fun. After all she is a woman.”

Over the past year, Akers has worked with the multiplatinum superstar analyzing the right cuts, fits, and silhouettes solidifying Queen Bey’s place in fashion royalty–one which the consummately best-dressed singer maintains through not only her own wardrobe, but a forthcoming partnership with Topshop, too. But there’s another, equally stylish side of the pop icon, and anyone who visits the 33-year-old’s Instagram or website will notice: Recently she has been upping her fashion game with seemingly impromptu shoots no matter where in the world she happens to be. We’ve also seen Bey sport some names outside the runway regulars including Harbison, Marco de Vincenzo, and Romeo Hunte–courtesy of Akers. “I really wanted to bring in some new designers, some younger kids to see what they’re doing,” Akers told us recently, adding, “and then incorporate more international designers and underground streetwear designers out of London.”

It’s been a masterful evolution for the singer who has lately taken to bold color, feminine prints, and punchy accessories. For the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight, Mrs. Carter slipped into a cardinal Harbison jumpsuit, while another occasion saw her opt for a tailored, canary yellow Zadig & Voltaire suit emphasizing the star’s renewed focus on rainbow-like shades. “I wanted to be a little more experimental with color,” says Akers, adding, “like the orange Cushnie et Ochs top and pink Dsquared2 shorts. She’s such a bright person and I feel like in fashion today everyone strays away from color.”

However, one outfit that Akers references as a favorite was an all-cream look Beyoncé wore earlier this summer, which hinted at the shift in wardrobe that’s sophisticated and clean, but accessible: Pairing a topper from Barneys New York with Frame Denim jeans, her ensemble was a study in how to approach neutral dressing at all price points. “High-low is all about color selection, shape, and fabrication of the garment,” explains Akers. “I can get a skirt for $ 50 in matte jersey. It’s going to move and hug the body in a similar way as a skirt that’s $ 795.” Akers says the secret to her A-list client’s style comes down to the fit: She and Bey have been gravitating toward asymmetrical and bias cuts.

But the best part of her role, the stylist maintains, is being able see Beyoncé excited about the looks. “That’s the reward,” says Akers matter-of-factly. “That she’s enjoying herself and feels beautiful and confident.” How else, after all, to run the world?

The Witch of Lime Street

The Witch of Lime Street

History comes alive in this textured account of the rivalry between Harry Houdini and the so-called Witch of Lime Street, whose iconic lives intersected at a time when science was on the verge of embracing the paranormal. The 1920s are famous as the golden age of jazz and glamour, but it was also an era of fevered yearning for communion with the spirit world, after the loss of tens of millions in the First World War and the Spanish-flu epidemic. A desperate search for reunion with dead loved ones precipitated a tidal wave of self-proclaimed psychics-and, as reputable media sought stories on occult phenomena, mediums became celebrities. Against this backdrop, in 1924, the pretty wife of a distinguished Boston surgeon came to embody the raging national debate over Spiritualism, a movement devoted to communication with the dead. Reporters dubbed her the blonde Witch of Lime Street, but she was known to her followers simply as Margery. Her most vocal advocate was none other than Sherlock Holmes’ creator Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, who believed so thoroughly in Margery’s powers that he urged her to enter a controversial contest, sponsored by Scientific American and offering a large cash prize to the first medium declared authentic by its impressive five-man investigative committee. Admired for both her exceptional charm and her dazzling effects, Margery was the best hope for the psychic practice to be empirically verified. Her supernatural gifts beguiled four of the judges. There was only one left to convince. the acclaimed escape artist, Harry Houdini. David Jaher’s extraordinary debut culminates in the showdown between Houdini, a relentless unmasker of charlatans, and Margery, the nation’s most credible spirit medium. The Witch of Lime Street, the first book to capture their electric public rivalry and the competition that brought them into each other’s orbit, returns us to an oft-mythologized era to deepen our understanding of its history, all while igniting our imaginat

112 Greene Street: The Early Years, 1970-1974

112 Greene Street was one of New York’s first alternative, artist-run venues. Started in October 1970 by Jeffrey Lew, Gordon Matta-Clark and Alan Saret, among others, the building became a focal point for a young generation of artists seeking a substitute for New York’s established gallery circuit, and provided the stage for a singular moment of artistic invention and freedom that was at its peak between 1970 and 1974. This extensively researched volume is the culmination of David Zwirner’s January 2011 exhibition of the same name, gathering a number of works exhibited at 112 Greene Street (by Matta-Clark, Vito Acconci, Tina Girouard, Suzanne Harris, Jene Highstein, Larry Miller, Alan Saret and Richard Serra among others), alongside extensive interviews with many of the artists involved, a timeline of the early years at 112 Greene Street and installation views of the 2011 exhibition.

Bird Street School Receive Tribute & Medication Help By Charles Myrick Of ACRX

ACRX Recognition Gallery: American Consultants Rx
http://www.acrx.org -As millions of Americans strive to deal with the economic downturn, loss of jobs, foreclosures, high cost of gas,and the rising cost of prescription drug cost. Charles Myrick ,the President of American Consultants Rx, announced the re-release of the American Consultants Rx community service project which consist of millions of free discount prescription cards being donated to thousands of not for profits, hospitals, schools, churches, etc. in an effort to assist the uninsured, under insured, and seniors deal with the high cost of prescription drugs.

The American Consultants Rx discount prescription cards are to be given free to anyone in need of help curbing the high cost of prescription drugs.

Due to the rising costs, unstable economics, and the mounting cost of prescriptions, American Consultants Rx Inc. (ACRX) a.k.a (ACIRX) an Atlanta based company was born in 2004. The ACRX discount prescription card program was created and over 25 million discount prescription cards were donated to over 18k organizations across the country to be distributed to those in need of prescription assistance free of charge since 2004.

The ACRX cards will offer discounts of name brand drugs of up to 40% off and up to 60% off of generic drugs. They also possess no eligibility requirements, no forms to fill out, or expiration date as well .One card will take care of a whole family. Also note that the ACRX cards will come to your organization already pre-activated .The cards are good at over 50k stores from Walgreen, Wal mart, Eckerd”s, Kmart, Kroger, Publix, and many more. Any one can use these cards but ACRX is focusing on those who are uninsured, underinsured, or on Medicare. The ACRX cards are now in Spanish as well.

American Consultants Rx made arrangements online for the ACRX card to be available at http://www.acrxcards.com where it can also be downloaded. This arrangement has been made to allow organizations an avenue to continue assisting their clients in the community until they receive their orders of the ACRX cards. ACRX made it possible for cards to be requested from online for individuals and organizations free of charge. Request for the ACRX cards can also be made by mailing a request to : ACRX, P.O.Box 161336,Atlanta,GA 30321, faxing a written request to 404-305-9539,or calling the office at 404-767-1072. Please include name (if organization please include organization and contact name),mailing address, designate Spanish or English, amount of cards requested, and telephone number.

American Consultants Rx is working diligently to assist as many people and organizations as possible. It should be noted that while many other organizations and companies place a cost on their money saving cards, American Consultants Rx does not believe a cost should be applied, just to assist our fellow Americans. American Consultants Rx states that it will continue to strive to assist those in need.
