NYPD Officer Sues Over ‘Deplorable’ Conditions for Pumping Breast Milk: ‘It’s Just Inexcusable’

Simone Teagle, a New York City Police Department officer, has filed a lawsuit against N.Y.C., mayor Bill de Blasio and others, alleging that she faced poor treatment for pumping breast milk at work.

According to her personal injury claim, Teagle is suing for $ 5 million on account of pain and suffering, mental anguish and punitive damages. The New York Post was the first to report the news.

In the claim, Teagle, who used to work at the 113th Precinct, alleges that the respondents have “failed and refused to provide her and other similarly situated female employees who are nursing mothers with a proper location to express milk.”

A representative of the NYPD told PEOPLE, “The NYPD is in full compliance with the law.” The New York City Law Department declined PEOPLE’s request for comment.

Teagle told PEOPLE that, starting in February 2018, she had to pump milk in the bathroom, the locker room or her car for her son, who is now 11 months old.

RELATED: Brie Bella Opens Up About Her Struggle with Breastfeeding: ‘Mom Guilt’s the Worst Feeling’

In the locker room, she said, “There’s no window. There’s no air ventilation. There’s mold on the walls. There’s dirt on the floor. … It’s just a deplorable place. If I didn’t pump there, I would pump sometimes inside of the bathroom, which is difficult because you often hear women using the bathroom while you’re pumping, which is disgusting.”

She continued, “Sometimes, if I didn’t want to deal with those conditions, I pumped in my car. … Then I would take my milk and put it into an insulated lunchbox and keep my milk there until I could get home to refrigerate it.”

Teagle said that her supervisors’ treatment of her was similarly unnerving. She recalled, “I asked supervisors for a break. They’d give me a hard time often roll their eyes at me. They were very annoyed with me taking a break and how many times a day I needed to take a break to express milk.”

In August, the claim says that Teagle was asked to list her breaks for breast pumping in an Interrupted Patrol Log, which several other people can access.

“I started to just skip breaks,” she said. “It caused a medical condition for me with swelling in the breasts and the breasts being overfilled because it was just easier to avoid conflict by not even asking for a break.”

Teagle’s mastitis, according to Mayo Clinic, “is an inflammation of breast tissue that sometimes involves an infection. The inflammation results in breast pain, swelling, warmth and redness. You might also have fever and chills.”

Teagle was transferred to another command in September. Eric Sanders, Teagle’s lawyer, told PEOPLE that said she is still facing issues there.

“She doesn’t have a facility, and she basically will have to either pump in the bathroom … or she’ll have to do it in her private vehicle,” Sanders explained. “The police department is a multi-billion dollar agency. It’s just inexcusable that she would have to do that.”

Sanders said of police officers, “They have the same rights to nurse. They have the same rights to take care of their family. They have the same constitutional rights as anyone else.”

Teagle hopes that her lawsuit helps other women in her position. She said, “I’m hoping that women who are pregnant now, women who are going to have babies in the future … that they’ll have a facility that’s suitable for them, and they won’t feel discouraged or embarrassed about pumping milk or asking to pump milk.”

Richard Simmons Sues National Enquirer Over Reports He Transitioned

Richard Simmons is suing the National Enquirer, Radar Online and American Media, Inc. for their “cruel” coverage of false claims.

The lawsuit was filed Monday in Los Angeles Superior Court and accuses the defendants of libel and invasion of privacy-false light, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The publications allegedly used Mauro Oliveira ― a former assistant who has apparently stalked, harassed and blackmailed Simmons ― as their source for stories about the “real reason he disappeared” between June 2016 and March 2017.

The Enquirer and Radar Online claimed Simmons underwent gender confirmation surgery, which his rep called a “complete fabrication,” in a series of “cruel and malicious” articles.

“The National Enquirer and Radar Online have cheaply and crassly commercialized and sensationalized an issue that ought to be treated with respect and sensitivity,” the suit says. “Principles of freedom of speech and press may protect their prerogative to mock and degrade the LGBTQ community. But freedom to speak is not freedom to defame. Mr. Simmons, like every person in this nation, has a legal right to insist that he not be portrayed as someone he is not. Even the most ardent supporter of sexual autonomy and LGBTQ rights is entitled to be portrayed in a manner that is truthful.”

People magazine spoke with AMI about the filing.

“We stand by our reporting about him, all of which was based on solid sourcing and material evidence,” the company responded. “Should he choose to proceed with his lawsuit, we will defend it vigorously, and we look forward to the public vindication of our reports.”

Simmons stepped out of the spotlight back in 2014, which has led to much speculation about his absence, an LAPD drop-by and even a podcast titled “Missing Richard Simmons.” In April, the exercise guru released his first public statement in three years, insisting he was never “missing” and that he had been dealing with some health concerns.

“This has reminded me that when you need help you can’t be afraid to reach out and ask for it,” he said. “We all think we should always be able to solve our problems all by ourselves and sometimes it’s just bigger than we are.”

Melania Trump Sues the Daily Mail for Hurting Her ‘Once-in-a-Lifetime Opportunity’ to Make Millions as First Lady

A new filing in Melania Trump‘s libel lawsuit against the Daily Mail casts her role as first lady as a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity … multi-million dollar business relationships.”

President Donald Trump‘s wife on Monday re-filed a defamation suit against Mail Media, the owner of the Daily Mail, for publishing allegations last August that she once worked as a prostitute. In the lawsuit filed in the Manhattan Supreme Court, Trump’s lawyer, Charles Harder, argues for the first time that the article damaged the first lady’s “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity” to make millions by launching a “broad-based commercial brand.”

The filing, which asks for compensatory and punitive damages of at least $ 150 million, reads: “Mail Online’s conduct was extreme and outrageous in falsely making the scurrilous charge that the future First Lady of the United States worked as a prostitute. Plaintiff had the unique, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, as an extremely famous and well-known person … to launch a broad-based commercial brand in multiple product categories, each of which could have garnered multi-million dollar business relationships for a multi-year term during which plaintiff is one of the most photographed women in the world.”

“These product categories would have included, among other things, apparel, accessories, shoes, jewelry, cosmetics, hair care, skin care and fragrance,” the filing continues. “The also constitute defamation per se because they impugned on her fitness to perform her duties as First Lady of the United States.”

According to CNN, Harder and a White House spokeswoman issued identical statements denying that Trump intends to profit during her tenure as first lady. “The first lady has no intention of using her position for profit and will not do so,” said Harder, whose firm, Harder Mirell & Abrams, is representing the first lady. “Any statements to the contrary are being misinterpreted.”

Trump previously filed a similar lawsuit against Mail Media and a blogger in Maryland, but that suit was dismissed by a judge,  The Washington Post reported.

According to the Post, the law firm representing Trump said in a statement Tuesday that she had settled with the Maryland blogger, Webster Tarpley, who agreed to apologize and pay her an undisclosed “substantial sum.”

The Daily Mail has since retracted the story in question, which cited a Slovenian magazine’s report that a modelling agency Trump worked with in New York in the 1990s also served as an escort business offering sexual services.

The Daily Mail said in a retraction statement at the time that it “did not intend to state or suggest that these allegations are true, nor did it intend to state or suggest that Mrs. Trump ever worked as an ‘escort’ or in the ‘sex business.’ ”

Model Janice Dickinson Sues Bill Cosby For Defamation Over Rape Claims

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Model Janice Dickinson has sued Bill Cosby for defamation over statements by his representatives that called her claims the comedian raped her in 1982 lies.

Dickinson’s lawsuit filed Wednesday in Los Angeles Superior Court seeks unspecified damages on defamation, false light and intentional infliction of emotional distress claims. The suit states Dickinson requested a retraction from Cosby about statements calling her allegations, made last year to “Entertainment Tonight,” a lie. An email sent to Cosby’s attorney Martin Singer was not immediately returned. Singer called Dickinson’s claims that Cosby raped her in a Lake Tahoe, California, hotel room in 1982 “false and outlandish” in a letter to The Associated Press last year.

Dickinson’s suit states the denials by Cosby’s camp have caused her embarrassment, humiliation and led to her being re-victimized.
