SXSW Review: ‘Ali & Cavett: The Tale of the Tapes’

The title is just a tad misleading. While “Ali & Cavett: The Tale of the Tapes” does indeed pivot on the 50-plus-year friendship between legendary heavyweight champion Muhammad Ali and erudite TV talk-show icon Dick Cavett, both director Robert S. Bader and Cavett himself — frequent collaborators who co-wrote the film — always make it […]

SXSW Film Review: ‘Unfriended: Dark Web’

In “Unfriended: Dark Web,” the horror begins with a MacBook’s startup bonggg. Without leaving the computer screen — and Stephen Susco’s film will never leave the computer screen — the audience quickly learns several key things: A boy named Matias (Colin Woodell) has a stolen laptop, a deaf girlfriend named Amaya (Stephanie Nogueras), and a […]

See The Full-Throttle Trailer For ‘Baby Driver,’ The Ansel Elgort Movie That Rocked SXSW

Ansel Elgort drives getaway cars and Jon Hamm plays a psychopathic bank robber in “Baby Driver,” already one of 2017’s big-screen highlights. Crowds and critics went wild for the movie Saturday at its South by Southwest premiere, and new trailer makes it easy to see why.

“Baby Driver” marks Edgar Wright’s first directorial feature in four years. Known for clever action comedies, Wright previously made “Shaun of the Dead,” “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” and “The World’s End.” He also co-wrote “Ant-Man.”

Because Elgort’s monikered title character relies on pumped-up music to pull off successful getaways, the movie’s soundtrack makes it a sort of jukebox musical. It’s a romance too, with the titular Baby falling for a waitress (Lily James) and attempting to give up his crime life. Overnight reviews have called the film “a blast,” “wildly successful” and “a ‘Gone in 60 Seconds’ for the ‘La La Land’ crowd.”

“Baby Driver,” which also stars Kevin Spacey, Jamie Foxx and Eiza González, opens Aug. 11.

Check out the international trailer below, which is even more thrilling:

The New School’s Parsons and Panasonic Team for Wearable Prototypes at SXSW

Students at The New School’s Parsons School of Design and Panasonic Corp. have joined forces to unveil two wellness wearable prototypes at SXSW Interactive in Austin, Tex., next week.
The MFA candidates and undergrads worked with Game Changer Catapult, Panasonic’s innovation acceleration team, to finesse the Göbie bracelet, which is designed to trigger impromptu opportunities to play. Using haptic feedback, gesture recognition and a visual LED language, the device encourages users to interact in person. Its connected app recognizes when other Göbie users are nearby and “prompts a spontaneous play experience that fosters a sense of community no matter the location.”
Panasonic linked up the students with business leaders, engineers and a UX designer in its acceleration team. The aspiring designers are from Parsons’ MFA Industrial Design and MFA Design and Technology programs as well as the one for the BBA Strategic Design and Management programs. They decided on wearables that are meant to enhance social interaction and to help wearers catch a better night’s sleep.
With a blizzard of events, parties, all-night gaming, talks, networking opportunities, festivals and performances running March 10 to 19, SXSW could be a prime time to try Sleepwise, a compact device with an app that helps wearers

Lil Bub And Instagram Help Find Loving Homes For Pets At SXSW

We all know social media basically exists for the sole reason of sharing adorable animal pics. But one recent initiative demonstrated how posing with a pooch can garner more than just likes.

Lil Bub, South by Southwest and Instagram recently teamed up to find loving homes for cuddly creatures. Through a meet-and-greet and photo opp at the annual music festival in Austin, Texas, the famous Internet cat helped raise $ 7,000 in three hours for animal rescue centers, Mashable reported.

“The people who attend SXSW are influential, and are using their networks to promote adoption and to help share photos of these adorable guys. I think it’s really powerful,” Olivia Melikhov, ASPCA’s senior manager of social media, told Mashable.

There has been no shortage of amazing moments at this year’s SXSW, including a private concert for a fan injured in the SXSW car crash, or that time Lady GaGa had someone puke on her, but we think a charity initiative involving the Internet’s favorite cat definitely tops the list.

Lil Bub, the goofy and lovable dwarf cat with a jaw deformity that causes her tongue to permanently hang out of her mouth, uses her internet fame for good. Her website calls her “an advocate for homeless and special needs pets all over the universe.” and to date she has raised more than $ 60,000 for various charities.

It’s no wonder that SXSW hosted so many animal friendly events, with Austin’s current standing as the largest no-kill city in the nation. A report from the City of Austin revealed that the city shelters have a 91 percent live animal outcome, with 4,3000 dogs and cats rescued in the three month period the study covered. That’s a number made all the more impressive by the fact that 6 to 8 million cats and dogs are entering shelters each year, according to The Humane Society of the United States.

It’s more important than ever to help loving, adoptable animals find permanent homes. Good thing, in Austin at least, there is no shortage of friendly faces willing to help out. As Instagram partnerships employee Charles Porch told Mashable, “Our community is so powerful on Instagram and they love a reason to get together and if we can pair that with dogs that need to be adopted, then these dogs are going to have the most beautiful photography of any dog up for adoption today.”

“Wild Canaries” Cast Serves Up Comedy-Suspense at SXSW

Jason Ritter, Alia Shawkat and Lawrence Michael Levine stopped by the Samsung Blogger Lounge at SXSW 2014 to talk with What’s Trending about their latest film “Wild Canaries.”

The film is described as a “comedy-suspense film” according to director Lawrence Michael Levine. The plot centers around the potential murder of a couple’s elderly neighbor. In an attempt to find truth, the couple, played by Levine and his real-life wife Sophia Takal, don their trench coats and shades and become amateur sleuths.

Indiewire gave a positive review of the film, stating that it “transcends the clichés of NYC hipster comedies.”

“The idea that I would ever be doing anything “hip” is strange to me,” Levine said.

Apart from movie chat, Alia Shawkat answered “Arrested Development” rumors and Jason Ritter talked about his Charles Mansion transformation in his upcoming role.
