CEO Talks: Bonobos’ Micky Onvural Takes Unique Marketing Approach to C-suite

Micky Onvural has walked an unconventional path to the top post at Bonobos. She spent most of her career in marketing at brands such as Kellogg’s, eBay and Trulia. But Bonobos founder Andy Dunn saw something in the U.K. native that made him tap her in 2016 to serve as chief marketing officer for the men’s wear brand he founded in 2007. With the company’s acquisition by Walmart Inc. in 2017 and Dunn’s new role as head of digital brands for the mega-retailer, Onvural stepped up to chief executive officer.
Here, the mother of three talks about how her background has helped Bonobos evolve, particularly in terms of its out-of-the-box marketing campaigns; her management style, and how she balances work and family.
WWD: Tell me about your background and how long you’ve been at Bonobos.
Micky Onvural: I started my career at L’Oréal in the U.K., running hair coloring brands. From there I went to Kellogg’s and did kids’ cereal. Then I went to eBay — none of this had anything to do with running a men’s wear brand — and ran global brands for them in the U.K. In 2004, I moved to the U.S. and ran global brands for eBay on

Istanbul-based In the Mood for Love Takes on London

HIGH SHINE: Istanbul-based label In the Mood for Love is turning its attention to the London market.
The two-year-old brand, best known for its exuberant sequined creations sold at contemporary price points, quickly built a presence across key European retailers including Printemps in Paris, Tsum in Moscow and La Rinascente in Italy and now sees an opportunity to continue its growth trajectory in the U.K. market.
To introduce itself to the market, the label has tapped the London-based influencer Soraya Bakhtiar. Bakhtiar, who said she was drawn to the maximalist nature of the brand, brought together a group of fellow influencers and London-based designers to celebrate the label, hosting a dinner at Blakes Hotel, which came complete with sequined place mats and pink sparkly scrunchies used as napkin rings.
Guests included handbag designers Tara Ghazanfar and Gunes Mutlu; personal shopper and influencer Bettina Looney; jeweler Anissa Kermiche and author Katherine Ormerod, who all came dressed in sparkly creations and trendy padded headbands to match.

Wool Week Takes Over London’s Covent Garden With Colored Washing Machines

SPIN CYCLE: Britain’s annual Wool Week always sets out to quash misconceptions about the fabric, and this year they didn’t disappoint, unveiling an installation of stacked, colorful washing machines in London’s Covent Garden. Dubbed The Wool Care, the installation will be on show until Oct. 21, and is meant to demonstrate the fact that wool is washable, durable — and cool.
“We always thought this was the last frontier. A lot of people think you can’t throw wool in a washing machine, but you can, and when you wash wool, you’re not creating micro-plastics. Wool biodegrades naturally in the sea,” said Peter Ackroyd, chief operating officer for Campaign for Wool.
Hackett, Vivienne Westwood, Marks & Spencer and Adidas are among some of the retailers who took part in the launch earlier this week. “Vivienne Westwood has spread the message of wool extremely well, she talks about buy well, buy less, buy wool,” Ackroyd said.
Jeremy Hackett of the men’s wear brand Hackett unveiled the installation with his dog Muffin and his Aston Martin, which has bespoke wool interiors. Among the other retailers who are preaching the gospel of wool is the outdoor apparel brand Finisterre, which is changing the perception of wool as an “old-fashioned and stuffy” material.

Westminster Debate on U.K. Fur Ban Takes Shape, Backed by Stella McCartney

LONDON — The fur debate continues to unravel in the U.K. with the Labour party now demanding a total fur ban in the country, during a debate held today at Westminster.
Ahead of the debate, designer Stella McCartney wrote an open letter in support of the cause.
In her letter, McCartney highlights the recent shift in attitude toward fur as an indication that the country needs to take a step further and ban fur, to reflect the public sentiment.
“Over the past few years countless brands and designers have woken up to the unequivocal cruelty of the fur industry and have subsequently stopped using fur in their collections. More than 80 percent of British people believe it is unacceptable to buy or sell any animal fur. The world is moving in a more positive direction and it is time for the UK to take the vital next step,” wrote the designer, who has never used fur or leather in her collections.
McCartney added that she sees the U.K.’s current policy of banning fur farming 20 years ago yet allowing fur imports into the country as “hypocritical and unacceptable” and addressed the argument that real fur is a more sustainable and environmentally-friendly option to its

Kanye West’s Collaborator Takes the Blame for Sample Used Without Permission: ‘I’m Sorry’

Kanye West just dropped his highly anticipated album Ye on Friday, and the singer is facing even more controversy over his first track, “I Thought About Killing You.”

Berlin-based record label PAN accused West, 40, of using an unauthorized sample of Kareem Lotfy’s Fr3esh album from the mono no aware compilation.

“It’s sadly another case of an artist who capitalizes on culture without any original ideas and because culture trickles up, this means we are all basically working for him,” the label’s founder Bill Kouligas told Pitchfork.

Adding that his company may pursue legal action, “Everything leads to him, he’s the ultimate narcissist,” says Kouligas.

While a rep for West had no comment on the report, his frequent collaborator Francis and the Lights, who co-produced the song alongside Benny Blanco, has already taken the blame.

“Yo I’m sorry I added that beat at the last minute and we’re reaching out now,” Francis tweeted. “Do you want to know anything else about it? It’s not Kanye or anyone else’s doing but mine so please direct any aggression or criticism at me.”

Balmain Takes a Stand for Racial Inclusivity at Cannes

Balmain has taken a stand at the Cannes Film Festival — dressing 16 actresses at a press call for the project “Noire N’est Pas Mon Metier,” or “Black Is Not My Profession.”
The multimedia project, which includes a book, photo exhibit and documentary directed by Aïssa Maïga, aims to expose discrimination in the French and American entertainment industries. It is a compilation of personal stories shared by Maïga herself, along with actors Nadège Beausson-Diagne, Mata Gabin, Maïmouna Gueye, Eye Haidara, Rachel Khan, Sara Martins, Marie Philomène Nga, Sabine Pakora, Firmine Richard, Sonia Rolland, Magaajyia Silberfeld, Shirley Souagnon, Assa Sylla, Karidja Touré and France Zobda.
Maïga approached Balmain creative director Olivier Rousteing to dress the project’s ensemble — a request he immediately accepted. While it is not common for fashion brands to take political stands, particularly regarding race, Rousteing hopes that Balmain can lead by example — incentivizing other labels to throw their weight behind important causes.
“The moment I was asked to participate, I knew it was right for me, and for this brand, to form a part of this moment,” Rousteing told WWD. “The simple message of the importance of inclusion that these actors are bringing to us is one that I’ve often

Geraldina’s Antifashion Approach Takes Shape

LONDON — Geraldina Bassani Antivari’s label was the designer’s answer to the challenges brewing in the industry.
“There’s no service in the industry, it’s very inhuman. They don’t cater to real people, they cater to models and to people who want to be part of the fashion world. I know there’s a whole fun side to that, but real people in their day-to-day lives, want staples,” said Bassani Antivari, who also works as the creative director of the label Mr & Mrs Italy, known for its fur-lined parkas.
“For us, it really started by noticing that there are plenty of women who really know what they want, but they can’t find it. Selection is always very small, styles are often discontinued and it’s not all about quality — brands are going down with the quality and up with the prices. Everything is just moving too fast and we wanted to stop for a second and ask what we really want to offer.”
Four years ago, Bassani Antivari set out to change all that with the launch of Geraldina, which she describes as timeless products that spotlight the “best you can find in Italy,” in terms of both print and fabric.

The next five were Calvin Klein, Michael Kors, Alexander Wang, Carolina Herrera and Christian Siriano, according to ListenFirst, a leading social analytics firm. ListenFirst’s social engagement score is based on the volume of social post engagements, fan growth and brand mentions across Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr, YouTube and Google from Feb. 8 to Feb. 14.
Overall, “NYFW fall/winter 2018” was mentioned 478,000 times during that time frame, down 31 percent from the spring shows in September. Although NYFW was on the whole less buzzed-about this season, participating brands were able to keep their own engagement high, according to Miranda McWeeney, fashion and beauty industry lead at ListenFirst.
“Brands that followed the celebrity strategy, such as Victoria Beckham, won fashion week from a social engagement perspective, but the actions were unrelated to the collections. On the other hand, brands that struggled to keep pace this season had a high focus on the collections themselves — engagement with posts of this kind have a potentially higher value for the brand, but generate far less engagement,” said McWeeney.

The Council of Fashion Designers of America’s Retail Lab is changing over again and this time, the space is devoted to Title of Work.
Led by designer and artists Jonathan Meizler, Title of Work’s shop will remain in the space for three months and will feature several installations and special events during its run.
“I am excited to share my vision in a three-dimensional environment from an artistic and social perspective,” said Meizler. “I want people to come to the space and let their guard down and experience what a lot of people are feeling and thinking at the moment.”

Burger King Takes on McDonald’s with New Double Quarter Pound Burger

Burger King is taking direct aim at its longtime rival McDonald’s with its latest burger creation.

The fast food restaurant recently revealed their Double Quarter Pound King Sandwich, which is very similar in both name and ingredients to McDonald’s Double Quarter Pounder.

For $ 5.39, the heavy-duty sandwich features half a pound of beef (two patties), two slices of American cheese, sliced onions, pickles and ketchup on a toasted sesame seed bun, clocking in at a whopping 900 calories and 54g of fat. In comparison, McDonald’s version also includes mustard spread and will set you back 770 calories and 45g of fat.

WATCH THIS: Food Hack: Make The Best Burger Topping Ever

“We’d like to offer our deepest condolences to all the flat-top fried double quarter pound burgers out there,” Burger King said in a press release. “We’re flame grilling the competition.”

RELATED: The Most-Ordered Dish at Each of America’s Favorite Chain Restaurants

This isn’t the first time Burger King has gone head to head with McDonald’s. In October, their Halloween ad featured the tagline “Come as a clown, eat like a king” along with a Ronald McDonald character dressed as the clown from It.

While the burgers seem very similar, there’s only way one way to find out which one is best: a good old fashioned taste test.

Demi Lovato Takes a Seat for Fabletics

Don’t tell Demi Lovato that sitting is the new smoking.
Multitasking may be a sport of sorts for the self-described singer-songwriter-actress-entrepreneur-philanthropist, but for her newest ad campaign for Fabletics, she decided to take a seat. Wearing coordinating leggings and a bra top with sneakers, Lovato is all smiles in one shot lounging in a leather chair taking a selfie. (The image would appear to be a wink at the “Selfie-Worthy Styles” on the Fabletics by Kate Hudson site.) In another of Lovato’s new ads, she appears in a neon cropped top and leggings, twirling her ponytail while semi-reclined on the floor surrounded by albums. Last season she took a more athletic approach, standing with both hands wrapped apparently ready for sparring.
Despite the Annal of Internal Medicine’s report that excessive sitting can run the risk of early death – regardless of how much you exercise — Fabletics is taking a more relaxed approach to branding this time around. But the five-year-old brand creates clothing to inspire shoppers to stay active — however they define that. JustFab Inc. co-chief executive officers Don Ressler and Adam Goldenberg launched Fabletics with Kate Hudson to offer stylish, high-quality gear at an accessible price point.

Net-a-porter Takes Evolution Over Revolution Approach for Spring

LONDON — Net-a-porter has been rethinking the way it approaches its seasonal buys and shifting its attention away from the traditional fashion calendar and ephemeral trends, toward ideas that have been unfolding over several seasons, items that have social media mileage and buzzy new names in the contemporary market.
“The idea that each season we present the woman with a new vision of who she is going to be, is simply outdated for us,” said Lisa Aiken, the company’s retail fashion director, explaining that while the Net customer is always on the hunt for newness, she also has an intimate knowledge of her personal style and isn’t looking for radical shifts.
For spring, the retailer is standing behind a number of trends that have been developing over the last few seasons, including tailoring, bright colors and high glamour.
Tailoring has already taken off for fall; suits made up 30 percent of the company’s ready-to-wear buy for fall 2017 and to date, 6,000 blazers have been sold on the site. For spring, Net is planning to build on the trend’s burgeoning success, with tailored pieces in lighter fabrications such as linen and brighter colors.
The retailer has also been cautiously introducing Eighties or Nineties-inspired pieces,

Under Armour Stock Falls as Cofounder Kip Fulks Takes Step Back

Shares of Under Armour Inc. fell 4.3 percent Monday as investors were apparently rattled over a report that the company’s cofounder Kip Fulks was taking a further step back at the company and the activewear giant is considering exiting some smaller-volume businesses, such as the tennis and outdoor categories.
The company’s stock closed down 68 cents to $ 15.23.
An Under Armour spokeswoman said the company is in a quiet period and had no comment on the report from the Wall Street Journal. The company will report its latest quarterly results on Oct. 31.
Fulks, a college classmate of chief executive officer Kevin Plank, has slowly become less and less active in the day-to-day operations of the Baltimore-based company. Since May, he has been a strategic adviser working on improving the brand’s efficiency, but since Under Armour was founded in 1996, he has also served as chief operating officer, chief marketing officer, president of footwear and innovation, and president of product. He has also held roles in sourcing and quality assurance.
Sources said Fulks is on a sabbatical, a benefit offered to all employees with over 10 years of service. When and if he will return is unknown at this point.

Misha Nonoo Takes On-Demand Manufacturing to Offer Wider Size Range

BEING MORE DIRECT: Having relaunched the business as direct-to-consumer more than a year ago, Nonoo started to think about on-demand manufacturing four or five months in. Seasonality was an initial motivator to sell straight to shoppers, but sustainability made her seek a manufacturing partner that would spare any fabric liability, take care of marking and grading and ensure cutting and sewing with a two-day turnaround time.
After six factories bid for the direct-to-consumer business, the designer decided on her existing partner — a “very entrepreneurial” Chinese factory owner, who was born and raised in New York City. Once an order is placed on her site, the item is cut and sewn in two days and then shipped directly to customers with U.S. ones receiving their merchandise in three days. “In a way, it’s this idea of going back to old school luxury but almost on a fast fashion calendar. In doing that, I realized that not only would I cut out more inventory, I would also cut out contributing to more waste. I would also be able to offer more sizes,” she said.
Earlier this month she started offering her Easy Eight in sizes from extra small to extra large, and from

Fifth Harmony’s Ally Brooke Posts Inspiring Message Before She Takes the VMA Stage: ‘Dreams Do Come True!’

Ahead of the highly anticipated Fifth Harmony appearance at Sunday’s MTV Video Music Awards, Ally Brooke shared an inspiring post on Instagram about her career and living her dream.

The 24-year-old singer — who has been performing since the age of 9 — shared a tweet she posted in 2012 about the VMAs being a source of inspiration for the singer. “Watching the VMAs just inspires & motivates me even more 🙂 #dreamer #believer #oneday,” Brooke wrote back in the day.

“On September 6, 2012, I tweeted this….today, August 27, 2017 I will be taking the VMA stage with my girls….can’t describe my emotion,” Brooke wrote. “It’s hard for me to not breakdown in tears as I read this….thank you to GOD for this opportunity….it’s something I’ve dreamed of for so long….my cup of joy & gratitude is overflowing….I want to encourage everyone out there to KEEP DREAMING.

“Work hard. Follow your heart! Dreams do come true! Always believe. I am taking every millisecond in today. And will leave my heart on that stage tonight, more than I ever have 💛.”

Brooke’s career launched after the San Antonio native auditioned for TV’s The X Factor in 2012. It was there that she landed a spot on what would eventually become Fifth Harmony. Although 5H didn’t win the televised competition, the group went on to have success of their own.

In May, Brooke opened up to PEOPLE Chica about 5H as well as her “biggest inspiration” — the late Tejano singer, Selena Quintanilla.

“Selena is my angel,” Brooke said. “She is my biggest inspiration. Being from San Antonio, Texas, I really feel that connection to her because she had a lot of performances and a lot of her most iconic performances in San Antonio. Back in my hometown, we love her. We all as a community celebrate her and adore her. We keep her memory alive.”

PEOPLE Now spoke with the foursome —  Lauren Jauregui, Brooke, Dinah Jane and Normani Kordei — backstage during their Thursday rehearsals for the VMAs, where they will perform their new hit single “Down.”

“We’re extremely excited,” said Jauregui. “This is definitely one of the biggest moments of our careers — something we’ve worked so hard for to get to a place where people would want us on the stage, so we’re excited as heck for it.”

The group released their third and self-titled studio album — their first without former fifth member Camila Cabello — on Friday.

Jon Bernthal Takes a Vow of Silence for Pilgrimage

If there’s any actor that might be considered an “actor’s actor” who has gone to great lengths for his craft, then Jon Bernthal has worked his butt off to get where he is now.

It’s been five years since Bernthal was a regular on AMC’s The Walking Dead, but he then got an even more high-profile gig as The Punisher in the second season of Netflix’s Daredevil. Bernthal’s version of Marvel’s Frank Castle proved popular enough to get him his own series, which he shot earlier this year and is expected to debut later in 2017.

Between doing those shows, Bernthal still found plenty of time to make movies, and he even found time to chat with IGN about a variety of topics.

Brendan Muldowney’s Pilgrimage couldn’t be any more different from Bernthal’s normal role, if there is such a thing, because it takes place during 13th century Ireland as it follows a group of monks on a dangerous journey through the rugged Irish landscape to bring a sacred relic back to Rome. The diverse group of monks is played by Stanley Weber, John Lynch, Hugh O’Conor and none other than Tom Holland, and Bernthal is playing a character simply known as The Mute, a man unable to speak who comes from a violent past.

Tesco Takes Toxins Out of Textiles From F&F Clothing Range

DETOX DIET: After committing to the Greenpeace Detox Campaign in June, Britain’s Tesco, one of the world’s largest retailers, said it would immediately begin the process of becoming toxin-free by 2020.
Tesco’s clothing brand, F&F, has joined 79 other international brands and suppliers in the fight against climate change. The F&F brand offers clothing for men, women, children and babies.
The brand has promised to eradicate hazardous chemicals from its supply chain together with brands such as the Swedish fast-fashion giant Hennes & Mauritz and Levi Strauss & Co.
It has committed to sell only products manufactured in a way that protects not only the environment but also workers and their supply chains.
The Greenpeace Detox Campaign, which was launched in 2011, now monitors 15 percent of worldwide textile production.
“In only six years, forerunners of the textile sector went from total denial and opacity of their supply chain to transparency and the banning of all hazardous chemicals. Tesco’s commitment shows the rest of the industry that using hazardous chemicals is not an option anymore” said Kirsten Brodde, Greenpeace Germany’s project lead of the Detox Campaign.
Part of Tesco’s commitment includes thinking ahead and eliminating questionable substances which have not yet been proved to be toxic. Tesco also

Rafe Totengco Takes Rafe New York Bags on Summer Roadshow

Rafe New York founder Rafe Totengco is among the many designers using the summer holiday to multitask with travel and trunk shows. Totengco, who founded his company in 1997 with a few clutches, small bags and some belts, found a niche with his shell-inlay minaudières, which he introduced in 2009.
The bags, handmade in his native Philippines, retail for $ 650 — $ 1,200 at neimanmarcus.com, his own site and Les Suites in Paris, Tryano in Abu Dhabi, Rustan’s in the Philippines, Masari in Indonesia and Harvey Nichols in Dubai and Kuwait among others.

Bride Takes Typical Bridesmaid Pics With Her Best Guy Friends Instead

A bride kicked a popular wedding convention to the curb — and the results are pretty adorable.

Rebeca Sinohara, a 24-year-old computer-engineering student from Itajubá, Brazil, was a little bummed before her wedding. She wanted to take getting ready photos ― the pics that are typically taken of the bride and her bridesmaids as they primp for the big day ― but she didn’t have any close girlfriends to ask.

“Of course I have girlfriends from childhood and high school, but we are not as close as before,” Sinohara told Buzzfeed.

She did grow close to five of her male classmates during her time in college, so she asked her bros to stand in for the pics. Her buddies were game, and even donned pretty pink robes for the shoot.

(Story continues after the photos.)

Sinohara posted the photos to her personal Facebook page on May 16, where they got a lot of attention and soon went viral.

And the wedding? It went off without a hitch.

“The wedding was simply amazing,” she told Buzzfeed. “Renato and I share a great love, and it’s easy for people to see and feel that when they are around us. It was a very simple and intimate event, and everything was planned just the way we like.”

College Lacrosse Team Takes Field Using Donald Trump Speech

Some college teams take to the field backed by a fight song, but not the Adelphi University Lacrosse Team in Garden City, New York.

They’ve been taking to the field backed by the strains of this Donald Trump speech:

“In all of our cities and in all of our towns, I make this promise: We will make America strong again. We will make America proud again. We will make America safe again. And we will make America great again! God bless you and good night. I love you!”

The team’s unique choice in fight music came to light on Wednesday after Barstool Sports posted a video on Twitter and Instagram.

Although Trump’s presidency has been polarizing, team coach Gordon Purdie insists his players aren’t trying to make a statement.

“The men’s lacrosse team has traditionally chosen patriotic music for its pre-game warm-up,” Purdie said in a statement to the New York Daily News. “It was not intended to provoke or be taken as a political statement. We’re sorry if anyone was offended.”

An opposing coach told the paper the Adelphi Panther have been using the Trump speech as their coming out music since April, but declined further comment.

Adelphi athletic director Danny McCabe told Newsday that the Trump speech doesn’t violate any of rules regarding warm-up music.

“The men’s lacrosse team’s regular-season pregame warm-up music is selected as a team and approved for use so long as they do not contain vulgarity or inappropriate subject matter,” McCabe said. “The songs they proposed and used this season meet those guidelines. As such, we are obliged to follow the policy.”

Not everyone agrees with the team’s choice, based on Twitter reactions.

Regardless of the reaction, the team seems to be doing well with a 14-3 record on the season and the top seed in the NCAA tournament that begins on Saturday.

Woman Takes Engagement Photos With Her One True Love: Popeyes Chicken

When it comes to being engaged, Elyse Chelsea Clark is throwing caution to the wind, er, wing.

The New Orleans bartender is such a fan of Popeyes Chicken that she decided to do a series of engagement photos with her favorite fast food.

Then she posted the poultry-centered pics on Facebook with this note: “I’m finally engaged!”

The Popeyes engagement pics taken by photographer Whitney Tucker show Clark looking romantically at chicken boxes…

Strolling through the park with the object of her affection …

And smooching that box with the same passion that is typically reserved for love’s kiss.

Oh, and she likes the biscuits too.

The photos might be funny, but Clark’s passion for Popeyes is real and true.

“I have a really big love for Popeyes,” she told the New Orleans Times-Picayne. “I eat it all the time.”

The chain responded to Clark’s engagement spread with this tweet.

Ben Carson Gets Stuck In A Public Housing Elevator, Twitter Takes Him Down

This is not a joke.

In what seems like a “Saturday Night Live” sketch come to life, Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson actually got stuck in an elevator on Wednesday while in an affordable housing complex.

The incident occurred while Carson, who has said he believes too many people are in public housing, was touring Courtside Family Apartments, which is located in Overtown, a low-income neighborhood in Miami.

Former Miami Heat star Alonzo Mourning, who helped develop the complex, waited for Carson outside of the elevator as firefighters rescued Carson and six others, including Carson’s wife Candy. According to a reporter from the Miami Herald who was on the scene, the HUD secretary was stuck in the elevator for about 20 minutes.

Carson, a retired neurosurgeon who does not have experience in housing policy, stopped at the complex as part of a nationwide “listening tour” of affordable housing developments for low-income residents. The tour comes after The Washington Post reported in March that President Donald Trump’s administration is considering a $ 6 billion cut to HUD, shrinking the department’s budget by 14 percent.

So, naturally, when Twitter heard the news that Carson was stuck in an elevator in an affordable housing complex, users had to weigh in.

Here are the next-level responses:

Jeff Bezos takes this massive robot for a ride

Jeff Bezos takes this massive robot for a rideAmazon CEO Jeff Bezos demonstrated this insane-looking, 13-foot-tall mechanical robot at the second annual MARS (Machine-Learning Automation, Robotics & Space Exploration) conference. The robot, called Method-2, is a product of Hankook Mirae Technology, a South Korean company. If you think it looks like something out of a sci-fi flick, that’s because the creator worked on major sci-fi films such as “Terminator” and “Transformers.” Bezos must have felt the same way, since he was quoted as saying “Why do I feel so much like Sigourney Weaver?” referencing the actress’s 1986 flick, “Aliens. …

Stephen Colbert Happily Takes Trump’s Challenge To ‘Say It To My Face’

President Donald Trump recently expressed frustration about media outlets that quote anonymous sources in negative stories about his job performance. During his Feb. 24 speech at the Conservative Political Action Conference, Trump dared these negative sources — if they’d like to say “Donald Trump is a horrible, horrible human being” — to “say it to my face.”

Well, Stephen Colbert is happy to take on that challenge.

“Sir …” he said after the clip played, to applause from the crowd. “It would be my honor to say it to your face.” He beckoned the camera closer, smashing his face against the glass to make sure his message was crystal clear.

Just before that, Colbert had a very simple, but poignant, line about the president during his opening monologue.

After spending part of this monologue responding to the borderline unbelievable ending to the Oscars on Sunday ― where “La La Land” erroneously won Best Picture until it was announced that “Moonlight” was the true winner ― Colbert transitioned to Trump.

“Speaking of heartbreaking mistakes,” Colbert said, followed by a slight pause. “Donald Trump … “ he continued, to the crowd’s applause.

When the audience finally settled down, Colbert began to talk about Trump’s upcoming address to a joint session of Congress, where the president is expected to present a plan for the nation’s healthcare.

Yet earlier on Monday at the White House, Trump had said the mystifying line “Nobody knew that healthcare could be so complicated.”

After showing the clip of the president’s quote, Colbert followed up his “heartbreaking” comment with a more poignant response to Trump.

“It’s just that you didn’t know,” Colbert said, “That’s like if I performed open-heart surgery tomorrow and said, ‘Wow, nobody said it’d be so wet in here.’”

Heartbreaking for sure.

PEOPLE’s Jess Cagle Takes You Behind the Scenes of Oscars Sunday

It’s finally Oscar Sunday, and PEOPLE is taking fans right to the center of the action.

Jess Cagle, Editor-in-Chief of PEOPLE and Editorial Director, Time Inc. Style & Entertainment Group, is prepping for ABC’s official Oscar pre-show, Oscars Opening Ceremony: Live from the Red Carpet. The pre-show, which is hosted by Good Morning America anchors Robin Roberts, Lara Spencer and Michael Strahan, will feature Cagle as a contributor alongside Marie Claire‘s Nina Garcia and Vanity Fair’s Krista Smith.

Of course, one can’t head to the biggest night in movies without a full stomach. Cagle and his date (and partner) Matt Whitney, writer for the TV show Timeless, grab a bite to eat in West Hollywood before heading to the Dolby Theatre for the night’s festivities.

Cagle also offered a view of the cloudy skies above Hollywood, where rain is predicted to threaten the awards show’s red carpet. Luckily, he shared yesterday that a rain structure is already in place to keep celebrities (and their fashion choices) protected from any unfavorable weather conditions.

After a good meal, the final step before heading to the Academy Awards is looking the part. Cagle assisted Whitney in getting picture-perfect for the red carpet, giving a tutorial on how to successfully tie a bow tie.

Oscars Opening Ceremony: Live from the Red Carpet airs on ABC at 7 p.m. ET. The Oscars themselves will air at 8:30 p.m. ET and The Oscars: All Access live stream from the red carpet and backstage will begin at 7 p.m. ET.

For more Oscars fun, watch the PEOPLE & EW Red Carpet Live Oscars pre-show on Feb. 26 at 5 p.m. ET/2 p.m. PT on the People/Entertainment Weekly Network (PEN). Go to PEOPLE.com/PEN, or download the app on your favorite device. Then watch our Red Carpet Fashion Wrap-Up after the Oscars!

But before you do any of that, be sure to get your own Oscars ballot to play along during the show.

Fabrizio Viti Takes Takes His Shoes on the Road in California

Italian shoe guru Fabrizio Viti, who unveiled his first collection last July, took his newest shoes on the road for a pair of trunk shows with Barneys New York in San Francisco and Beverly Hills this week.
While Viti is based in Paris (his “day job” as style director of women’s shoes at Louis Vuitton keeps him in the City of Light), he said that his favorite place to shop is Barneys.
“I never think about the business part; I design the collection, you know? But when it was time to be [in a store] somewhere, my first wish was Barneys because that’s where I would go in New York in the Nineties, so I’ve always aspired to be here,” he said.
Looking around the multibrand shoe department, he said, “It’s funny, I’ve probably designed many of the shoes that have been here over the years,” referring to his past stints working with Tom Ford at Gucci, Miuccia Prada and also Marc Jacobs during his tenure at Vuitton.
Viti’s trunk show was preceded by a lunch at Freds hosted by Katherine Ross and Alexia Niedzielski that drew Gaia Repossi, Jaclyn Smith, Tara Subkoff, Alice Eve, Rochelle Gores Fredston, Joséphine de La Baume, Rebecca de Ravenel,

Love Takes Action: An Astrological View

For the past two years, my HuffPost blogs have focused on astrology and the myriad ways this ancient art is helpful and meaningful for life today. I was galvanized by HuffPost’s call for articles under the heading #LoveTakesAction. It is an antidote to the swirling hate around us in these fractious and difficult times and I am happy to contribute. Personally, and in my astrology practice, I am encouraging people to focus on what they can do without becoming overwhelmed by the fray, the double talk, and polarization we find all around us.

The first category HuffPost suggested is ways people take action to show and even mobilize love. Each astrological sign takes action in different ways and hewing to your own resonant talents and ability will maximize your effectiveness and keep your energy balanced.

Aries: Leads the campaign and marches. He is a natural warrior for justice.

Taurus: Raises money for organizations that matter and promotes concrete goals towards tolerance and peace.

Gemini: Disseminates real information that encourages people to think and take action.

Cancer: Nurtures those who come across their path whether in a soup kitchen, shelter, or random encounters.

Leo: Dramatizes with very public and heartfelt performances which portray the world you want to live in.

Virgo: Analyzes and categorizes information to discern the actual facts and communicates this information clearly.

2017-02-13-1487000444-7693330-zodiacsigns.jpg

Libra: Engages with tact and diplomacy in relationships, action and dialogue that try to balance love and hate while taking a middle course.

Scorpio: Transforms him or herself with radical, personal actions that serve as a model for passionate tolerance of all the forms love can take.

Sagittarius: Teaches through conversation and ideas that laughter and good humor can overcome obstacles.

Capricorn: Organizes business structures based on responsible solutions and ecological solutions for all people.

Aquarius: Creates a circle of friends and common-minded people who act together on social projects.

Pisces: Works with charitable and religious organizations that reach out with compassion to the neediest.

These suggestions are calls to love action for each sign. I hope they resonate with you and enhance your quest for a more harmonious world.
