Jussara Lee Taking Her Message of Sustainability to a Multisensory Performance in New York

SECONDHAND NEWS: Committed to sustainability as an individual, designer and business owner, Jussara Lee used that ideology as a rookie costume designer for “Inside the Wild Heart.”
Based on the writings of one of Brazil’s most famous writers, Clarice Lispector, the immersive theatrical experience was conceived by Andressa Furletti and Debora Balardini and directed by Linda Wise. The show bows Thursday in New York. Lee was initially approached by the Brazilian theater company Group.BR about helping to fund the production. She offered to pitch in with the cast’s attire instead.
Lee described Lispector’s work as “amazing,” but the project’s upcycling is what really sold her. Working with a low budget meant “that it was all about secondhand and vintage shopping. I was very interested in that and told them, ‘We’ll make adjustments. We’ll make things fit. That’s what we do best,’” said Lee, adding that she liked the idea of reusing “things that had already been extracted and polluted. There is so much clean-up to do and so much stuff in this world.””
In addition, the project forced her to switch up her usual routine and do some thrifting at Beacon’s Closet in Brooklyn and “all the other underlings.” It was also an

Madison Cox on Taking Up the Baton From Pierre Bergé

MARRAKESH, Morocco — Until the death of Pierre Bergé last month, Madison Cox was best known as a gifted — though ultradiscreet — landscape gardener with a list of clients including Marella Agnelli, Michael Bloomberg and Sting.
News that he tied the knot with Saint Laurent’s longtime companion and business partner in March raised his public profile a notch. Now the 59-year-old finds himself thrust into the limelight as president of the Fondation Pierre Bergé-Yves Saint Laurent, in charge of preserving the legacy of fashion’s most famous power couple.
The elegant, quietly spoken Cox assumed the mantle with the inauguration earlier this month of the Yves Saint Laurent museum in Marrakesh, where he has lived part-time for the better part of two decades. He is also president of the Fondation Jardin Majorelle, which runs the neighboring garden, bought by Saint Laurent and Bergé in 1980.
Cox has been less involved with the Yves Saint Laurent museum in Paris, inaugurated last month, and admits he is still working out how to balance his passion for gardens with his new responsibilities.
Here, Cox talks about taking up the baton from Bergé, learning how to run a museum and coping with his newfound fame:

Adam Pascal Talks Crossword Puzzles, Sobriety And Taking The Role Of Shakespeare In Something Rotten On Tour

2016-12-20-1482264826-9400906-PascalAdamheadshotPhotoJoshLehrer.jpg

I met up with Adam Pascal at the St. James Theatre where he, along with the rest of the talented cast, welcome theatergoers to the Renaissance nightly in the tongue-in-cheek Broadway show Something Rotten. Although the Broadway show will be ending its run on January 1st, Adam, along with Rob McClure and Josh Grisetti, will be taking the show on tour. I met up with Adam Pascal in his dressing room at the theatre. He’s still as good-looking as he was in his Rent days, and was introspective and thoughtful as we covered a wide variety of topics.

Is there something that you bring with you to every dressing room?
A crossword puzzle book. I’m obsessed with crossword puzzles. I find them very soothing and meditative. I’m not someone who puts up pictures and moves into dressing rooms. If it’s a good part, I’m not in the dressing room too much!

You live in California. Is your family still there?
Yes, it’s the real bain of my existence, being separated from them. But moving back here isn’t the right choice for us. We’ve been out there for ten years, so my kids have their lives and their friends out there. This is what I do, and I do love it. And as long as people keep responding positively to the work that I do onstage, then I’m going to strive to do it and keep getting better and expanding my perceived abilities.

What’s the best part of it for you?
Feeling like I did a good job. That’s why I prefer theater to camera work. You get a full complete experience; getting to the end of the story and knowing that you just entertained however many people, hopefully a full house. And you get a sense of accomplishment every day. You don’t get that immediate gratification, that reaction, in film and television work as its very impersonal, and I respond to the feeling of a job well done.

This show is, in part, a spoof on Shakespeare. How you ever performed in a Shakespeare production?
No, I haven’t.

Would you want to?
I don’t think I would. It’s not my thing. To be completely frank with you, I’m not moved by it, I don’t understand the language enough to be moved by the material. So I don’t strive to get to that level where I could be a Shakespearean actor. I think it needs to be in your blood. Maybe I’m too simple, but I’ve seen a number of Shakespearean productions and I was left feeling empty and bored.

2016-12-20-1482264767-2815398-SRAdamPascal0074rscusethisname.jpg

You’ve originated a lot of roles. This role was originated by Christian Borle. Is there a different kind of pressure taking on a role that someone else originated?
I find that there is less pressure, and I think that I prefer taking over a role originated by someone else. If I’m originated something, it’s a lot slower of a process. When you take over for someone, the hard work is done and you just have to slip into the costume, metaphorically speaking. I’ve found that I’m good at interpreting something that someone else originated and making it my own. I find it easier. I’m lazy quite frankly!

I thought you did a great job making it your own.
I wouldn’t know how to copy someone else’s performance; it would feel like stealing. And I love what Will and Christian did, but I wouldn’t know how to do it the way each of them did it because that was unique to them.

You have an accent for this role. Is that fun?
Yeah, I love it. I like to disappear as much as I can into a role. So the more makeup, the more accents, the better. That’s what makes it fun, to be as far removed from me personally as I can get.

How was it performing the day after the election results?
Coming back here, the day after the election, was a difficult experience, and the mood was reminiscent of coming here after 9/11. It was hard to come in that day, and the mood in the theater was grim.

The ultimate message of the show for me was about being true to yourself. What allows you to believe in yourself?
That’s a good question because I have a hard time believing in myself. Every job I get, I say “how am I here?!”. I feel like an imposter. I know that I’m good at it, but I have a hard time internalizing that I’m good at it. And I feel like, at any moment, someone is going to pull back the curtain and say “aha you suck!”. It’s really more of a question of this being what I know how to do. I’ve been successful for twenty years in theater so I’m going to continue to work in theater because it’s where I seem to have the most luck. And I feel incredibly lucky.

You have so many fans.
I grew up playing in rock bands. I will always be colored by the experience of, for many years, playing in empty bars and empty clubs, and what that feels like to pour out your creative soul and be ignored. So, to even acknowledge that I have fans, I feel like “wow there are actually people here.” It will forever be ingrained in my mind that I will walk out there and there will be a couple of people at the bar. So I’m incredibly humbled by my fans; it’s quite amazing and I’m forever thankful for them.

Do you have any kind of mantra that you live by?
Not really. I find that, if you have a mantra, you eventually break it. If you have a code of “this is how I live my life” you eventually break it. I’ve been sober for almost four years, and I definitely was somebody who said something and did another and I spent many years living like that. So now I just try to be good to my family and be honest and act in a way that I didn’t act when I was using. I guess you have a different perspective after you go thru that kind of thing. When you risk losing everything that matters to you, and you somehow come out of it without having lost it, for me, I just try to keep my head down and live my life the way I should live it. And not talk about it or preach to other people. Because no matter what anybody told me, I had to figure it out. And so, like I said, I want to walk the path that I think I need to walk, keep my head down and stay out of other people’s business. Look at the hypocrisy of this world – look at the president-elect – there’s no bigger hypocrite than that.

Hamilton is such a craze and it brings me back to Rent and the phenomena surrounding it, for different reasons than Hamilton, but similar in the sense of it being a movement.

There are such strong similarities. If anything, Hamilton is a bigger phenomenon because of social media and the internet. In 1995, social media didn’t exist. So our show basically was a word of mouth thing. Hamilton went nuclear much quicker because of social media. And yeah, I know some people in the show, and I’ve definitely watched them and was nostalgic about my experience. I was a little envious that they were able to have this type of experience without the incredibly heartbreaking loss that we endured, losing Jonathan Larson the opening night of our dress rehearsal off-Broadway. Our experience was, and always will be, colored by Jonathan dying right when this thing was taking off. I envy them not having this heaviness surrounding them, and being able to enjoy the experience without the sadness we had to deal with.

Something Rotten ends its Broadway runs January 1st. What’s next for you?
Me, Rob and Josh are going out on tour. We start immediately, on Jan 10th, and the following week we officially open in Boston.

See Adam Pascal in Something Rotten on Broadway, or on tour early next year. Get tickets here.

This Model-Turned-Designer Is Taking High Heels Down A Notch

Brazilian beauty Mari Giudicelli’s sky-high career has included modeling gigs for international brands like Maryam Nassir Zadeh, Ulla Johnson and Eckhaus Latta, but the recent FIT graduate is now setting her sights on something a little closer to the ground — shoes.

Earlier this year, the Ford model-turned-designer launched an eponymous collection of comfortable and reasonably heeled footwear that is expected to make its in-store debut this fall.

Featuring four classic styles, including the ankle boot, the loafer and the mule, Giudicelli’s collection is a critique of the high-heeled fashion industry that prioritizes aesthetic over functionality, comfort and foot health.

“There’s a lot of media and celebrities being thrown in your face. [The message is that] ‘heels make you sexy, heels make you look good, and makes your legs look great’ … but there should also be that much information about how bad they are for you,” she told HuffPost Rise.

Watch the video above to catch a sneak peek of her new collection which features “Brazilian-sourced wood, lizard skin and rabbit fur,” and learn more about her vision.

Leonardo DiCaprio Taking A Selfie Is Beyond Entertaining

Human Academy Award Leonardo DiCaprio is as close to a perfect specimen as we’re going to get in our lifetime.

Because, amid a bevy of iconic roles and shelves full of awards, “The Revenant” actor is at heart a humanitarian, an environmentalist and an expert at hiding from his fans. He’s also great at taking selfies.

To prove it, here’s a selfie the actor took in support of the recently-signed Paris Agreement (again, he’s amazing).

With that stare, we’d agree to anything.

And though we’re pretty sure DiCaprio hasn’t taken a photo with a gigantic Twitter phone/mirror thing before, he seems really happy with how his selfie came out.

Like, really happy. It’s like he didn’t even know that he was actually that handsome.

Keep the selfies (and monkey photos) coming, Leo.

Taking My Own Advice

A human being is a part of the whole called by us, the “Universe” — a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feeling as something separated from the rest — a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty.

Decades later and Albert Einstein’s words still hold much value and truth.

We are not separate from the whole. This is the understanding I came to after living a life on the opposite end of the spectrum.

When I studied adolescent development in graduate school, I was particularly fascinated with the theory of egocentrism and the concept of personal fables: As teenagers, we hold the belief that we are unique and special, separate from the rest. We desire to be the center of attention, and believe that nobody could ever understand our personal experiences.

Thinking back to my younger years, I felt like nobody understood me. The theory relates to adolescents specifically, but I wonder if it could be applied to one’s entire lifespan, depending on a person’s development. It’s only been in the last two years that I have let go of my personal fable and have come to integrate and embody the depth of Einstein’s words.

So why is this important?

I travelled to India, embarking on a journey of transformation and when I returned I was living by Einstein’s words: seeing the energy everywhere I went, experiencing the intricate connections that exist in everything, viewing life as one giant web, each moment interwoven into the next.

However, I was undermining a very important reality… One’s individual journey.

I came back to North America to a loved one who had fallen ill and decided that, with all the tools I had acquired while away, it was my responsibility to heal this person. I had learned so much about health and healing during my travels and felt like I held the key to her recovery.

How many of you have experienced that moment when you’re suddenly filled with hope, believing that you’ve discovered the missing link to another’s liberation?

When I was away I faced my own health issues and came to appreciate the importance of treating the body like a temple so that it is able to heal.

How we nourish ourselves in terms of what we consume and the kind of attention we give our bodies has a huge impact on our health. Self-love is essential in this equation.

And when I realized this, I was determined to transmit this “knowing” and “awaken” all those around me, adhering to Einstein’s notion that we are not separate from the whole.

But here’s the thing I was undermining: While there is truth in the fact that we are all one, it’s not our job to make others see what we see and do what we do.

Every person is here to experience his or her own journey and all we can do is commit to our own path, take the necessary steps to stay on course, lend a helping hand to those who desire support and love and accept those who don’t.

I know that staying away from processed foods, refined sugars, and GMOs is critical when it comes to treating my body well; I know that exercising from a loving place and consciously moving my body on a regular basis is fundamental to my health; I know that meditating daily supports my mental clarity and stability; I know that drinking tons of water and getting good sleep impacts my vitality; And I now know that it’s not my role to impose these truths on others who are not willing to receive them.

You know what I’m talking about, don’t you?

Disease occurs when energy is blocked inside the body and what we consume in the process has massive impact on our ability to release those blockages. I have read a plethora of research papers on the importance of nutrition, exercise and a loving mindset when it comes to healing the body. I have watched my own health transform based on these facts. And yet, I cannot enforce these lessons. All I can do is live by them.

This created a lot of personal pain and frustration at one point — I had to give up the role of savior, even with those I love most in this world.

Many of us grow up attached to this identity (e.g., the savior, the giver, the martyr, the helper, etc.), especially women. We are conditioned to believe that it is our obligation to heal/save/fix/change the people we love in this world. But it’s not.

While giving up this identity was painful, it has also been one of the greatest lessons I’ve learned.

It’s not up to us to light another person’s flame; we must ignite our own flame while loving those around us, as they are, and know that the flame may catch at some point… or it may not.

The butterfly effect is something to consider, especially in relation to Einstein’s words: A small change made in this complex system of life can have huge consequences elsewhere… But it is not our role to ensure that happens. Instead, we must trust in the unfolding and continue living our own truth.

Again, we may think we have the solutions for others’ pain. We may be convinced that if she stopped comparing herself to others and had more love and appreciation for her body in this moment or he was willing to see the mind-body connection and work through the emotional hurt in order to heal the physical pain than everything would be different.

While these things may be accurate, there’s a fine line between knowing something to be true and inflicting it onto those who are not ready to receive it.

Thus, after spending countless months trying to make other people see what I see and do what I do and witnessing more damage come from this process than good, I have chosen to surrender and trust in the butterfly effect.

I choose to embody what I preach, instead of merely talking the talk and expecting others to follow; I choose to infuse love into everything I do, whether it’s the food I eat, the activities I engage in, or the stillness I come to; I choose to lend a helping hand to anybody who crosses my path and desires support; And when I fall into an old pattern of neglect, self-hatred, comparison, or lack of presence, I choose to see it and I bring compassion into the equation.

We are human beings — accepting that this is an ongoing journey of growth is part of the process.

So what can we do when it comes to helping those we love?

We can live by what we speak. We can love and honor our bodies every moment of the day. We can help those who want support, while trusting that they have all the inner resources needed. We can light our own fires and allow them to burn brightly. We can be the change. And we can trust that everyone is doing the best they can.

And it’s still a work in progress, as Rumi states, “Yesterday I was clever, so I wanted to change the world. Today I am wise, so I am changing myself.”

See How The World’s Most Beautiful Ballerinas Are Taking Fashion By Storm

Move over A-list celebrities and big-time supermodels—the ballerinas are here! The fashion industry has been flirting with the dancer for awhile now and another company has just joined the list. Wolford, maker of both high-quality tights and Kim Kardashian West’s favorite dress-slash-skirt, has debuted some stunning images created in connection with photographer Dane Shitagi’s Ballerina Project, an Instagram-friendly collection of the world’s top dancers striking gorgeous poses on city streets and in leafy parks.

Here’s Boren in Paris, wearing Wolford.

The images were created to go along with the company’s new “ballerina kits,” specially packaged combos of pieces like leg warmers, tights, and bodysuits that dancers might need during a rehearsal, intel gleaned from Wolford’s ongoing relationship with American Ballet Theatre dancers Isabella Boylston and Stephanie Williams.

Prior to these pointe-shoed beauties, the last ballet megastar to attract our attention was Misty Copeland, making big waves with her impressive Under Armour ads.

For fall 2014, AG Jeans relied heavily on ballerinas to show off how very stretchy its newest denim launch was. Gap jumped on the trend early, shooting San Francisco Ballet’s Yuan Yuan Tan back in 2012.

The ballet love affair is nothing new either. Way back in 2007, fixture company Brizo paired with Jason Wu and shot a campaign with dancers wearing Wu gowns and posing (beautifully) underwater. The relationship between luxury brands and the dance world has also resulted in a few campaigns featuring high-profile industry stars, though not until recently was the actual dance on display. Watch company Movado, for one, was a large sponsor of New York City Ballet and ran ads featuring principals like Paloma Herrera and Mikhail Baryshnikov.

A Wedding Photog Slipped While Taking A Picture And The Result Is Priceless

Photographer Chase Richardson slipped and fell while he was in the middle of taking bridal party pictures at a wedding last June. Poor guy!

Fortunately, though, his wedding fail was not in vain because it resulted in this excellent photo:

Richardson snapped the photo at the nuptials of Kristina and Will Moore in June 2014 at the McClain Lodge in Brandon, Mississippi. He explained to The Huffington Post that it had rained all morning leading up to the wedding, which gave way to some slippery pavement.

“When it came time to take the wedding party photos, the rain had subsided, but everything was wet,” he said. “So I decided to shoot the wedding party under a covered patio that was basically a concrete slab. I was framing up the photo of the entire wedding party, and I took a step backwards and slipped in a puddle. It was all kind of a blur, but I hit the ground, broke the lens I was using and cut my finger open. Embarrassing! I shot the rest of the wedding with a very noisy, broken lens and a bleeding finger.”

The groom told HuffPost that Richardson was a total trouper and didn’t miss a beat.

“[My] first thought was just hoping he was okay, it was a pretty nasty fall,” Will said. “We saw there was blood on his hand and hoped he wasn’t hurt too bad. He got up and went right back to work though.”

Richardson didn’t even know he had captured the moment until after the wedding when he was looking through what he had shot.

Fast-forward to a year later, when Richardson tweeted the photo at Jimmy Fallon along with the hashtag #weddingfail.

The “Tonight Show” host ended up featuring the photo on his show. Afterwards, the picture also made the rounds on Reddit where it received more than 5,800 upvotes at the time of publication.

“I think after all of this, I would have to say that this little accident has been worth it,” Richardson said.

The Architecture of Barry Byrne: Taking the Prairie School to Europe

The Architecture of Barry Byrne: Taking the Prairie School to Europe

Barry Byrne (1883-1967) was a radical architect who sought basic principles as fervently as his mentor Frank Lloyd Wright and his inspiration Louis Sullivan, forging an individual style with taut planar skins enveloping modern space plans. In 1922 he designed the first modern Catholic church building, St. Thomas the Apostle in Chicago, and in 1924 he traveled to Europe where he met Mies, Mendelsohn, Oud, and other modernist architects there. He was the only Prairie School architect to build in Europe, designing the concrete Church of Christ the King, built in 1928-31 in Cork, Ireland. A dedicated modernist and progressive Catholic, Byrne concentrated for much of his career on Catholic churches and schools throughout North America, many of them now considered landmarks. This book charts the entire length of Byrne’s work, highlighting its distinctive features while discussing the cultural conditions that kept Byrne in the shadows of his more famous contemporaries. Illustrated by more than one hundred photographs and drawings, this biography explores the interplay of influences and impulses-individualism and communalism, modernism and tradition, pragmatism and faith-enduring throughout Byrne’s life and work.

Rising Star Pico Alexander Talks Social Media, Bioluminescence and Taking Risks

2015-06-03-1433346089-8240349-ALEXANDERPICOBway.com.jpg

I met up with Pico Alexander at the Cafe at the Signature Theatre on the eve of his 24th birthday. He was taller than I expected with a thick head of hair that he hid under his fedora hat. Pico has a spiritual energy to him, with a look and demeanor that reminds me of a young Johnny Depp. When I make the comparison he smiles and blushes; “He was my favorite when I was a kid. I used to pause the dvd Edward Scissorhands because I was crying so much. I felt so bad for him! Like when he punctured the waterbed or tried to cut the steak. I love that guy. Thank you for saying that.” Sodas in hand, we sat down, with piano music playing in the background at the Cafe, and started chatting:

Where does the name Pico come from?
My grandfather started jokingly referring to me as Pico when my mom was pregnant with me. And then when I was born, they wanted to give me a serious name, so they named me Alexander. But nobody ever called me Alexander except for one teacher in sixth grade.

Growing up, you went to LaGuardia High School. What did you focus on?
I auditioned for music and for acting because that’s what my parents were breeding me to be. I played classical piano and trumpet for awhile. My mom has this fond memory of me getting into her car after the audition and saying ‘Mom, i’m going to be an actor’. But in reality I had been writing that in journals for years.

You are kind of a man of mystery. You aren’t very active on social media. You don’t use twitter or have an instagram account.
No social media for me.

Why’s that?
I think that I spent too much time comparing myself to other people and it didn’t seem very real anymore. All of a sudden you have more than a thousand friends and everybody is posting all the best things that happened to them. And it kind of unsettled me really. I started posting a status and waiting to get the likes. If I got the likes then I was validated as a human for that day and if I didn’t it was like “f***, nobody likes me”

Who is Pico?
I don’t know. I’m trying to figure that out. I’d be hesitant to give any sort of an answer because its always changing.

What would your friends say about you?
They would probably say I’m one of the most immature people they’ve ever met!

In what way?
I can be my share of selfish and uncompromising and loud and obnoxious and a bit of an asshole and definitely mean to my share of people. And not very empathetic. And these are the things that I’m working on now. It definitely took me awhile to realize that I’m not the center of the universe.

Did your off-Broadway show Punk Rock help in that way?
Sure, I think Punk Rock had an effect.

2015-06-03-1433348599-5262989-pico2.jpg

Let’s talk about What I Did Last Summer. Who do you play?
I play Ted. He’s a local boy, a Canadian. He can be a little bit of a rowdy influence and he’s a friend of Charlie, the protagonist. Charlie meets Anna Trumble who is a bit of an outcast and eccentric and she taps into his potential and tells him that he has a gift and he has to work on finding out what it is. She unlocks that for him and he goes and finds out there is more to life than what he originally thought.

Do you have a pre-show ritual?
We pretty much just lose it back there in the dressing room. It’s me, Noah Galvin, and Dan Weiner our drummer. We all share the dressing room, get hyped up, and listen to music.

I saw that you played a young Joe Carroll in FOX’s The Following. What was it like being on set?
The scene was a lot bigger beforehand. There was a fish in the scene and the character Doctor Strauss puts the fish on the table and its flopping around and the Doctor wants to illustrate to Joe that he’s enraptured by it. Which was super interesting because, by law, you are only allowed to take a fish out of water for 20 seconds at a time. So we had a dude standing by with a bucket who would constantly interrupt the scene and grab the fish and throw it in the bucket and take another fish and put it on the table.

I read online that you want to swim with sharks. Is that right?
Yeah, I’d love to swim with sharks! Sharknado. A bit of a metaphor for wanting to risk it all in a way.

What are some of your hobbies?
I’m writing a lot lately. And I’m very fascinated with my dreams. I’m taking a sober year this year. I had a crazy experience at the end of last year. I was away on a small island with my family and I swam in this bio-luminescent bay and thought – it’s not going to get any better than this – and on the spot decided to try a year of sobriety as a challenge. Because of that, my dreams are so vivid this year. So I want to really focus on that unconscious self this year and connect with that self and see what it is that I truly want.

Do you meditate?
I meditate a little bit. Not as much as I’d like to.

One question I ask everyone: What’s one thing you would tell your 15 year old self?
To slow down. Listen. Observe. Help people. Help them up not push them down. And to be honest. High school is a really tough time for everybody and we don’t really understand that at the time. Be honest about your fears and your shortcomings. And just be nice.

What do you like best about yourself?
That’s crazy. I never think about that. It’s so easy to get wrapped up in melancholy. I think I like my honesty. I’ll ask people questions that might be uncomfortable but will also put myself one hundred percent out there. I’d rather fail than be mediocre.

Is there anything that you want people to know about you?
No. He laughs. I’m always weary of putting anything in writing because it’s always changing. If I had to choose, I would want them to know that I’m loyal.

Do you have any favorite quotes?
I like the quote “It is written” from The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. Because it means it is what it is and everything is what it is and that’s ok.

Taking Pause and Tending to the Roses we Have Been Gifted

Stop and Smell the Roses

The House had The rose garden that the garden club ladies made mention of on many occasion. They tended to the urban myth that roses are impossible to care for unless you are deemed and esteemed, an expert. The promise of mold and strange bacterial fungi will ravage the gifts planted in 1908 that was bestowed upon me when the title papers were signed, if I did not take heed.

Thankfully I did not register what They, the astute members of the G Club were talking about or I may have reconsidered moving in. I was already wary to the tending of plants flowers and all that. I like them. I just never had a desire or a talent for tending to them. I did not come into this world with a curiosity or a passion nor develop the intellect for growing anything other than my three sweet peas now turned teens. What to do with the pressure? How do I keep the roses alive? Maybe hire an expert to tend to the thirty plus bushes now in my care?

For sheer self preservation, I decided not to listen for the time being. Nothing new-check out my early report cards. I collect two large baskets and pair of gloves and some clippers. In full bloom and nearly my height I breathe in their magnificence, for starters. I could get used to this. I hand crank the rusty -may need a tetanus shot-lever to start the water drip to the roots-evidently the water can’t spray directly on the roses and it must be done when the sun isn’t overtaking us. I had listened up a little. It’s 6 am and my people are all tucked in. I am bare foot in the dirt. I clip at leaf 5 or below-not remembering why this is the rule but it’s one of the ten thousand Rose Rules. I have a basket of dead roses and a basket to fill my house up with. Each morning I collect ten or more vases worth. I need more vases and more friends to share these beauties with. Each bush is unique. I loved to collect the rainbows and sort them out like I am mastering a painting-something new with each piece of rose art. They become my paints and my canvas. I fall in love with them, well most of them. I talk to them-mostly about my children and what I am up to that day or evening. It seems cat lady strange to say but I feel like they listen. I keep my tending simple so I keep on with it. Clip, chat and make rose art in as many vases as I can find.

I decide nothing chemical can touch this treasure of mine. I keep clipping and loving them and that is it. I am not holding my breathe for an invitation to the Garden Club-what would I have to offer them? I love my roses and I tend to them? That’s it. And they would have a list of the ten thousand to do’s I missed to do to tend them. I am not a good meeting go-er anyway.

Three bushes withered away by July. I am to blame-Professor Plum did it I wish to say-but no I did. I didn’t love them. I was not thankful for those lost treasures. They did not Lift me up-they had no scent and they didn’t feel like a part of our magical world. I really didn’t like those few bushes -I could not connect with them. I neglected them with my lack of attention and appreciation.

Funny how my rose garden became a little lab experiment. When we neglect having intention and thankfulness with our hearts toward something-it will wilt and eventually die. I was very very intentional when I met my next roses to fill the spaces of the gone bushes. We are quite famous for being the City of Roses so I spent hours up at our public gardens and breathed in and took photographs of the names of my favorites of this plethora of options-a bouquet buffet to chose from. I found the right ones and brought them home from the rose garden store place. Yes I play favorites with my roses, I can not help being more drawn to a color or fragrance, yet I do love them all now. And they thrive.

My simplistic tending routine brought me beauty and such peace that had escaped me in past days. I spent a decade racing around like a lunatic and now I get to do what my mamma always should-ed me to do-stop and smell the roses. And I did everyday from May through mid October. For ten years and now the baton has been passed once again. My roses Lifted me up with their beauty and their fragrance and their patience with my style of tending and appreciating.

Have you stopped and smelled the roses lately? How do you tend non conventionally to your garden ? Your life?

Natasha Lyonne on How Women Are Taking Over Comedy

Natasha Lyonne, director Jamie Babbit, and writer Karey Dornetto sat down with the What’s Trending team at this year’s South by Southwest festival to talk about their new film, “Fresno.” The conversation covered both Fresno the movie and the city, as well as the state of women in comedy today.

The film is a dark comedy about two sisters who work as hotel maids in the California city. You don’t see a lot of films set in Fresno, and apparently the city has been touchy on the topic.

“A lot of people were like, ‘Don’t mess with Fresno!'” Lyonne told us.

“I grew up in a terrible town called Cleveland,” Babbit said. “I grew up in an underdog city so I really responded to living in an armpit and wanting to get out. So when we decided to make the movie in California rather than Clevend, I thought about, ‘what is the Cleveland of California?'”

But movie title aside, the film is more about complicated women and the relationship between them. It’s a roll that “most women don’t get to play” according to Dornetto.

Lyonne describes it as “not apologizing for being sort of not thrilled with being alive.”

“I think when I see funny movies about women I get really excited.” Babbit said. “‘Bridesmaids’ really blew me away.”

“I loved that it was a movie about female friendships, which is something you don’t really see.” Babbit said. “We wanted to tell a movie about sisters who want to kill each other.”

On the subject of women in comedy, Lyonne said, “I think it’s such a great time for women in comedy. Amy Poehler and Lena Duham… there’s just so many exciting things going on right now.”

“I don’t know how men got the upper hand way back when,” Lyonne said. “It’s going to end and die soon. Hopefully some of them will stick around so we can use them for what we need them for. Reproduction and such.”

Paul Marciano Taking Guess Foundation to Italy

ITALIAN CAUSE: The Guess Foundation, which launched in Los Angeles in 1994, is coming to Italy this year. The organization aims to capitalize on the brand power of Guess fashion to push for greater sensitivity to violence against women, which Paul Marciano — Guess chief executive and creative director and Guess Foundation president — called “a social plague that unfortunately remains widespread.”
“We feel a specific duty to call the media’s attention to this problem in Italy, as well,” he added. According to 2014 statistics from the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights, 27 percent of Italian women have experienced physical or sexual violence, of which 19 percent is at the hands of a partner. The Guess Foundation is planning to mark Denim Day in Italy this spring, and to organize a series of special fundraisers in local Guess stores, with the first events tentatively slated for May or June. Popularized in the U.S., the Denim Day movement originated in Italy as a protest against a 1998 Italian Supreme Court ruling (since overturned) that an 18-year-old girl could not have been raped because she was wearing tight jeans, which were deemed too difficult for an assailant to remove without her assistance.

Emma Roberts Reveals Why She Loves Taking Off Her Makeup

When actress Emma Roberts isn’t making waves on FX’s “American Horror Story,” she’s probably pages-deep in her latest book obsession. If anything, you’ve probably seen her latest red carpet wins and her FOMO-worthy Instagram account.

We got the chance to catch up with the Neutrogena Brand Ambassador in New York City, where we talked all things beauty. And while Roberts loves the “idea of a strong brow, great lashes and a red lip,” she delved into a topic that’s been making its rounds in Hollywood lately: no makeup.

Growing up in the limelight, Roberts feels more comfortable in her own, natural skin. “I think I appreciate wearing no makeup than other people, because I have to wear it for work,” she begins, adding, “I really feel like myself and confident without makeup on.”

Roberts applies her no-makeup philosophy to other women, saying that the confidence she harbors from wiping off her mascara and foundation is “something that” she “thinks all girls should feel.” She attributes her thoughts to younger girls as well, highlighting her younger sister as a prime example. Roberts concludes “I just think it’s important to know that you look beautiful without makeup on,” adding that experimentation is great, too.

So, the next time you need an ego boost, it might come down to getting your makeup remover… or that untouched tube of lipstick.

Catch Emma Roberts on “American Horror Story,” which airs Wednesdays, 10 PM EST on FX.

Dear Medical Science: What’s Taking You So Long?

When I was a little kid, I had a lot of faith in you guys. Maybe I watched too many Star Trek episodes, but I figured by now — 50 years later — you’d have invented some miracle laser-like gizmo that could cure everything. The patient would lie down on a diagnostic bio-bed. Then the doctor would wave the gizmo over the illness-ridden body and — presto! — the affliction would magically vanish.

Where’s the gizmo, guys? We want the gizmo. Okay, forget the gizmo. I’ll settle for a Miracle Pill that does the same thing.

For decades we’ve been throwing money at you and, I hate to say it, I was kind of hoping for something more by now. Okay, I’m an impatient patient. Sue me.

That’s not to say you haven’t made some amazing advances. You’ve given us meds for cholesterol, ED, depression, AIDS, blood pressure and a host of other ailments; there are bionic hands, heart transplants, new vaccines, nerve regrowth, facial reconstruction, MRIs, laparoscopy and a whole lot more.

But, to cite a few examples, you still can’t cure Alzheimer’s; cancer, in all it’s many delightful forms, still mystifies you; you haven’t put the kibosh on multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s, diabetes or heart disease; hell, you haven’t even rid the planet of hemorrhoids yet.

Guys, we don’t want to go through all that suffering anymore. We’re sick of getting sick. It’s the 21st Century. Stem cells were discovered in 1978. You promised us limitless possibilities, yet here we are, 36 years later, still twiddling our thumbs.

Here’s how primitive we still are: Kidney patients still have to be hooked up to washing machines; basal cell carcinomas still have to be dug out by hand; skulls still have to be drilled to get to brain tumors; casts are still used for broken limbs; we still repair wounds with thread or staples; tooth extractions still require a set of pliers; amputations still involve saws; hoses explore our digestive systems; we still use catheters (the last major improvement was the flexible catheter, invented by Benjamin Franklin in 1752, hello.)

Let’s take cancer. If you are unlucky enough to get pancreatic, ovarian or lung cancer, you can pretty much put a down payment on a tombstone. After decades of research, here’s what we have in the arsenal: surgery, radiation and chemotherapy.

Not very impressive guys. Surgery is still horrible no matter how you… um… cut it; radiation is… well… radiation. Then there’s the wonder of chemotherapy (invented in the 1940s.) Good job there, fellas. Poison the victim and hope that the cancer succumbs and the patient survives. What a breakthrough. Remember the old medical practice of bleeding patients to cure them of just about everything? Today, we ridicule that boneheaded procedure as hopelessly medieval. Ha ha. Guess what? A hundred years from now, scientists will get a huge guffaw out of chemo.

Where are the Pasteurs, Flemings and Salks of yesteryear? If it had taken the estimable Dr. Salk as long as it takes you, half the world’s population would still think the iron lung is a marvel of ingenuity.

Here’s what really bothers me: Everyday we read about your latest earthshattering breakthroughs. “Scientists Build Liver Out of Stem Cells!” “Scientists Solve Mystery of Aging!” “Researchers Discover New Drug that Shrinks Tumors!” Wow, I say excitedly. Finally.

Then what happens? Nothing. It seems as if none of these exciting new medical miracles ever make it from the lab to the hospital. They just seem to… disappear. We never hear about them again. What happened? Was it all just optimism? Is there a need to publish something to justify the investment? Is the FDA dragging its feet? Is Big Pharma quashing them? Are the rats faking it? What?

All I know is that my internist did not offer me a new liver the last time I saw him, not that I need one. Yet.

The Spirit of the Marshall Plan: Taking Action Against World Hunger, School Lunches for Kids Around the World

The Spirit of the Marshall Plan: Taking Action Against World Hunger, School Lunches for Kids Around the World

Invoking the same spirit that fueled the Marshall Plan to rebuild Europe, author William Lambers calls for a global school lunch program to fight child hunger. 300 million children suffer from hunger worldwide. School lunch programs fight child hunger and also boost school attendance and performance. This book highlights the use of school lunch programs in Europe following World War II and how they can be used today in countries like Afghanistan, Kenya, Guatemala and Sudan. The future of these nations depends on a nourished and educated youth. Special attention is given to the work of charities such as Food for the Poor, Childslife International and the World Food Program. Supporting the U.S. government McGovern-Dole Food for Education program is seen as key to ensuring every child around the globe can receive a school lunch. McGovern-Dole helps fund the work of the World Food Program, Catholic Relief Services and other organizations that carry out school lunch programs in developing countries.

Taking a Hard Look at What’s Important: Validating our Values

When someone asks what our values are, we can probably start listing things that seem important to us in life right away. These things will determine how we assess our level of success, and so getting them right is very important.

However, as we eagerly list those values we may not quite as readily step back to decide which of those are actually ours and not ones that have been handed to us over the years. These ‘hand-me-down’ values are still very valid, so much so, that by now making that distinction may seem like a bit of a struggle.

I first noticed this when talking to students at the business school about their careers, goals and aspirations. What they considered to be important to them as they thought about their new post MBA lives was strikingly similar. It made sense; a set of like minded, highly driven individuals with similar backgrounds were likely to have common values. But equally, they were also very different people, and though I didn’t get this information the first time, after a bit of prodding I found out that:

Jo, had lost his father when young and grown up in a small home in Kansas, Peter was dealing with huge financial burdens and was born and raised in London, and Emily came from a long line of doctors in Kenya and was breaking away from her family tradition to pursue her dreams of becoming an entrepreneur. So, I pushed further and asked about their backgrounds and what that meant in terms of who they wanted to be, and how they defined success.

Soon the validation started trickling in,

I mean sure, when I say making an impact, of course I am talking much more than money.

When I said I’d never move back to Kansas, I mean I guess, if my mother needed me to, I would… It’s actually not so bad.

Hearing the students start to modify that initial checklist inspired me to do the same. Which of the values I held most dearly were ones I actively chose? It made me think about how far away from my Mediterranean origin I had come, and more so about the fact that I never really chose a fast paced, big city lifestyle, but yet here I was, allowing the city to define what success meant to me.

While we busily chase what everyone else chases, and make comparisons based on selective information through things like social media, it may be hard to really take the time to examine what really matters to us, personally. It gets even harder if it directly conflicts with what matters to those around us, or more accurately what appears to matter. I suppose we can call this, ‘value pressure.’

For the business students it was as important as ever to perform that validation, as they thought about their future careers and continued to define success for themselves, but I worried that might not happen. What I also realized was that we are all at risk of pursuing a path assuming it will define success for us. Without taking the time and being flexible enough to examine those values constantly and checking to see which hold true, and which lost value along the way, we may stop really remembering or trusting what we believe. It is then that we risk that all the effort we put into our endeavors, career and projects lead us down a path where our values just aren’t valid.
