International Talent Support to Unveil New HQ

ITS, A NEW HOUSE: Italy’s International Talent Support design contest — also known as ITS — has found a new home.
Named ITS Arcademy, the new space will house the organization’s headquarters and offices, as well as the remarkable ITS Creative Archive, which features outfits, accessories and talents’ portfolios, gathered from the talent scouting contest’s past 16 editions.
The archive, which features items from Balenciaga’s Demna Gvasalia, Mark Fast, Peter Pilotto and Richard Quinn, among other designers, currently occupies a small attic inside an 18th-century palazzo in the center of Trieste, Italy, where ITS is based.
In addition, ITS Arcademy — a name merging archive and academy — will host workshops, educational and training activities involving former finalists, winners and jurors.
“The talents we bring to Trieste will be coming back as accomplished professionals to share the depths of their soul in a land that has always been, historically, a place for exchanging and sharing. New talents, new professionals will be allowed to blossom, nurturing the sensibility and receptiveness of this territory,” explained ITS founder and director Barbara Franchin, who had already hinted at the project last June during the 2018 edition of the contest.

Borbonese, Istituto Marangoni Team Up on Talent Search

Italian luxury accessories brand Borbonese is launching a project in collaboration with several international schools aimed at expanding its horizons and dialoguing with the new generation of creative minds in order to reach a younger audience.
Called Officina Borbonese, the project kicks off this month in a partnership with Milanese fashion school Istituto Marangoni. About 70 students from the master’s programs in Fashion & Luxury Brand Management and Fashion Start Up will be selected to study and analyze the Borbonese brand and will be asked to pitch new ideas in terms of style, traditional and digital communication, as well as marketing strategies focused on both European and international markets, such as India, China and Korea.
“Officina Borbonese was born to find a contemporary way to communicate the brand’s core values,” said Borbonese chief executive officer Alessandro Pescara. “We would like Officina Borbonese to be a laboratory of both creative ideas and product research. We have in mind a sort of Desk Design Thinking, a space dedicated to creativity, which brings new interpretations of our iconic products, but also new forms of communication, an exchange between the company and the school, getting the world of production and creative imagination closer.”
In particular, Pescara highlighted

California Lawmakers Pass Talent Protections Act to Help Models and Entertainers Fight Sexual Harassment and Eating Disorders

FIGHTING HARASSMENT: Models in California now have a little more legal reenforcement thanks to the passage of the Talent Protections Act, which was created to fight sexual harassment and eating disorders. While not designed solely for models, the law is geared for the state’s fashion and entertainment industries. California Gov. Jerry Brown signed it into law Sept. 30 and it will take effect in January.
The Model Alliance, the New York-based organization that champions models’ rights, worked closely with California State Assembly member Marc Levine, detailing models’ experiences to help develop the law and calling for its support.
Under the law, talent agencies must create educational materials about sexual harassment prevention and retaliation, as well as information about good nutrition and eating disorders for adults. For minors starting out in the entertainment industry, they and their parents, or respective legal guardian, will be required to have training in these areas. The law also mandates that information about nutrition be provided to fashion models.
Models are routinely advised to lose weight, according to what is said to be the largest survey to date on eating disorders among professional models. Published last year in the International Journal of Eating Disorders, the study was an effort

GREEN SHOOTS: Livia Firth’s brand consultancy Eco-Age gathered industry figures, including Italian Chamber of Fashion president Carlo Capasa, entrepreneur Carmen Busquets and British Vogue editor in chief Edward Enninful on the sidelines of Paris Couture Week to select the five finalists of its talent competition for emerging designers.
The 13 jury members met in a makeshift conference room in a stuffy apartment on Tuesday to look at the work of 10 shortlisted designers. The finalists will attend the second edition of The Green Carpet Fashion Awards, to be held on Sept. 23 at La Scala at the end of Milan Fashion Week.

International Talent Support Contest Names Winners

TRIESTE, Italy — International Talent Support — also known as ITS — is back. The 16th edition of the event aimed at promoting the next generation of young designers and offering them financial support, as well as publicity, named its winners on Wednesday here.
The contest went through a one-year hiatus due to scarcity of funds and the loss of two longtime sponsors. Barbara Franchin, founder and director of the talent scouting competition, said this caused a “shock” and she “decided to stop and take time to reflect on what we’ve done, who we are, what’s the contest’s purpose, focusing on the people we helped, if we actually helped any.” Answers came via ITS’ longtime supporters and its team, leading Franchin to bring the contest back.
An international jury gathered at the Magazzino 42 venue, a former warehouse on one of the Italian city’s many piers, to evaluate the works of 30 finalists selected among more than 900 applications ITS received from students from 80 countries. The projects were divided into four categories: fashion, accessories, jewelry and artworks. Collections were showcased with a runway show, while the other projects were displayed through a dedicated exhibition.

African Fashion Weeks Boost Local Design Talent

South African Fashion Week celebrated its 20th anniversary as the pioneer fashion week in the country. It also marked the end of the long twice-yearly fashion week season in South Africa, which began with South African Menswear Week in July and Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Joburg in August, not to mention the 4th Bokeh International Fashion Film Festival in Cape Town in September.
According to Lucilla Booyzen, founder of SAFW, the event throughout the last two decades “has grown into the optimal platform for designers to start, develop and grow their businesses. It is the key voice of fashion in South Africa recognizing the power our diversity holds in this sector, which is one of the most socially inclusive SA industries.”
Since its inception in 1997, SAFW has used the designer competition as a springboard to showcase that individuality and originality in order to identify and nurture new talent as well as to inspire and challenge both emerging and established designers.
This cycle of SAFW — which took place over five days at a new venue, the rooftop of the Sandton City Mall in suburban Johannesburg — opened with the Sunglass Hut New Talent Search competition, which challenged designers to create a collection that would strike a balance

Top Hollywood Talent Agency Cancels Annual Oscar Party to Benefit Refugees Instead

One of Hollywood’s top talent agencies is canceling its annual Oscar party and using the money it would have spent on the shindig to help refugees affected by President Donald Trump’s controversial travel ban.

United Talent Agency announced on Wednesday that the company would be swapping its annual party for a $ 250,000 donation to the American Civil Liberties Union — the group that challenged Trump’s travel ban and was granted a stay, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The company will also be donating part of the money to the International Rescue Committee, a humanitarian organization. UTA also announced plans to host a pro-immigration rally two days before the ceremony at its L.A. office.

“This is a moment that demands our generosity, awareness and restlessness,” UTA CEO Jeremy Zimmer reportedly wrote in a memo to staff. “Our world is a better place for the free exchange of artists, ideas and creative expression. If our nation ceases to be the place where artists the world over can come to express themselves freely, then we cease, in my opinion, to be America.”

UTA reps some of the industry’s most high-profile stars, including Chris Pratt, Will Ferrell, Harrison Ford and Mariah Carey.

Trump’s executive order, signed Jan. 27, prevents citizens from seven Muslim-majority countries from entering the U.S, and indefinitely bars Syrians from crossing the border. The ban has been halted by Homeland Security and several judges across the country, although the Trump administration continues to push for it to be reinstated.

“When fear and division get the better of a society, artists are among the first to feel the impact — and to denounce the ill winds,” Zimmer also reportedly said in his memo.

The news comes as several people have been prevented from making an appearance at the show due to the ban. Iranian director Asghar Farhadi, nominated in the Best Foreign Language Film category, already announced that he will not be attending the show even if an exception is made for him. Along with Farhadi, the Syrian subjects in the documentaries The White Helmet and Watani: My Homeland are also unsure if they will be allowed to travel to the U.S. for the awards show, although both teams are still working to find a way for them to attend.

“After Words” Showcases Marcia Gay Harden’s Talent

Movie Review – Jackie K Cooper
“After Words” (Level 33 Entertainment)

Marcia Gay Harden can do no wrong. Any role she undertakes ends up being a special one just because of her talent, charm and charisma. In her latest film “After Words”, she portrays a single woman in her forties who is at the end of her rope. She has a plan to end her life but delays it until after a trip to Costa Rica. Watching Harden go from a beaten plain Jane to a woman on the cusp of a wonderful life makes for grand movie entertainment.

Jane (Harden) is a librarian in Los Angeles, going through the motions of her life but without any real enthusiasm about it. When her employment is terminated due to a downturn in the economy she takes her savings and splurges on a trip to Costa Rica. Suddenly Jane is a woman with a plan. She will go to a foreign land and while there she will end her sad, dull life.

Juan (Oscar Jaenada) is a man whose life does have purpose. He works to earn enough money to provide his daughter Anna (Jenna Ortega) with some of the good things of life. This particularly means an education at an American school in Costa Rica. He sees this as a way to guarantee her the best opportunities possible. It is expensive but Juan is willing to do what it takes to keep Anna there.

What Juan sometimes does is act as a tour guide. And sometimes his tour guide service provides the older ladies who hire him with something extra in the romance department. When Juan spies Jane he sees a perfect client. The rest of the movie focuses on the effect Juan has on Jane and Jane has on Juan.

Director Juan Feldman paces his story perfectly. The friendship between these two flawed human beings takes time to come to fruition. Juan is friendly and charming but it will take more than that to change Jane’s plans to end it all. Plus there is always the possibility the time in Costa Rica will be the perfect note on which to end it all.

Harden’s Jane is a character who sticks with you after the movie ends. She has many transitions and all are played with truth and believability. Jaenada’s Juan is the perfect counterpoint to her depressing aura. He is so alive, and so eager to please that it would be a crime not to enjoy his world. You certainly are able to see what he sees in her and what she sees in him.

This movie is a romantic fantasy and it must be accepted as that to be enjoyed. You can quibble that someone of Jane’s age must have some friends and/or relatives. You can also nitpick that protected hearts can not open up to adventure so quickly. But if you go with the flow and just accept the story as presented you will have a grand time with it.

The film is not rated.

“After Words” is similar to an old Katherine Hepburn film titled “Summertime”. In it she played a “spinster” on a European vacation who finds love. Hepburn made it all believable and Harden does too. So immerse yourself in the beauty of the Costa Rica setting and let your heart open up to a romantic fantasy.

I scored “After Words” a holiday 6 out of 10.

Levi’s Taps Local Talent for Berlin Store

PERSONAL TOUCH: Levi’s has collaborated with local talents for the first time to celebrate the reopening of its Berlin flagship store on Kurfürstendamm.
For two weeks starting March 30, classics like Trucker Jackets and 501 jeans personalized by young designers Bobby Kolade, Malaikaraiss and Sopopular will be on display in the Levi’s store – Germany’s largest.
Customizing has been part of Levi’s DNA from the outset. The brand’s jeans were personalized by 19th-century miners and Fifties Rockabillies, for instance. But repair and customizing services only entered into the corporate strategy in 2010 with the Levi’s Tailor Shops in European flagships.
The company plans to open such shops in all of its major European stores and intensify collaborations with local designers.
“We want to work more with Berlin talents,” said a Levi’s spokesman. “The city has always been a symbol of freedom and subversion — attributes inherent to our brand.”
