What This Mom Wanted To Teach Her Son By Shaving Her Head

Virginia Mellen’s method of teaching her son an important life lesson is a bit unconventional, but also empowering.

On Sunday, Mellen posted in the Facebook group Pantsuit Nation about how she first shaved her head in high school and then a few times in college. The look made her feel “comfortable, confident, and attractive.” Yet when the desire to shave her head crept up recently, the 27-year-old mom at first hesitated. Questions like, “Is this OK to do now that I’m a mom?” and “What will people think now that I’m older?” floated through her head. But then she thought about her 15-month-old son, Avi.

“I want my son to grow up with a mom who doesn’t make decisions about her appearance based on what other people think,” she wrote. “I want him to know that there is no particular way a mom or a woman is ‘supposed’ to look.”

Despite any hesitations, Mellen had her head shaved on March 11 and posted about the experience in the Pantsuit Nation group. She told The Huffington Post her son is too young to comment on her look, but he does enjoy feeling her hair with his hands and rubbing his cheeks on it.

“I think he enjoys the velvety feel of the short hair,” Mellen said.

Many other parents are into Mellen’s look, too. She told HuffPost that since she shared her post, which has gotten more than 47,000 reactions as of Wednesday, she has received photos from moms showing off their shaved heads and dyed hair.

“I love seeing everyone celebrate their individuality,” she said. “I have been surprised at the number of women who have said they wish they could shave their heads but they are ‘too old’ or ‘don’t have the face for it.’ But I urge them to go for it!”

When asked whether she had advice for other moms who might avoid doing something they want to do simply because they are mothers, Mellen suggested they “take a step back.”

“Ask if you have doubts because of what other people may think,” she said. “I am still a fairly new mom, but the most important knowledge I have gained so far is that there is no right way to be a mom. There is such enormous pressure on mothers to be a certain way, but I think even young kids can benefit from seeing our individuality.”

Why Will And Kate Teach Their Kids ‘Kindness, Respect And Honesty’

Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge want to instill strong values in their children.

While visiting a London school in honor of Children’s Mental Health Week in the U.K., the former Kate Middleton spoke about her dedication to this cause.

“People often ask me why I am so interested in the mental health of children and young people,” she said, according to People. “The answer is quite simple: it is because I think that every child should have the best possible start in life.”

Kate also discussed her own children and her goals as a parent to 3-year-old George and 1-year-old Charlotte.

“My parents taught me about the importance of qualities like kindness, respect and honesty. I realize how central values like these have been to me throughout my life,” she said.

“That is why William and I want to teach our little children, George and Charlotte, just how important these things are as they grow up,” she added. “In my view, it is just as important as excelling at maths or sport.”

During the school visit, William and Kate spoke to children about the importance of sharing their feelings and supporting other kids who may be struggling. The Duchess of Cambridge awarded a “Kindness Cup” to a special little girl who exemplifies this kind of support in her school community.

“It Takes A Man To Teach A Boy To Be A Man”

I’d like to say it was at a younger age when I really appreciated my father. But sadly, it really didn’t occur until college. Because that’s when I found out how much he means to me.

And no, I don’t mean being all alone in a dorm. I had a roommate, and friends. I had a good job, lots of work and fun, and even met my future wife there. It was a school very much like LaGrange College in fact, with lots of good professors, small classes, and plenty of scholarship, service and social occasions to make memories to last a lifetime, and started me on a great career with a top internship. In fact, college was, for the most part, a pretty wonderful existence.

That didn’t mean I didn’t miss him. I wasn’t great at writing letters (the occasional postcard had to suffice), but he did write me. I have to admit, handwriting wasn’t his strength. After all, he was a doctor, and I am sure all of the nurses and secretaries in town are adding a knowing smile, as there is some truth to this myth. But it was enough to know he did write. And I called once a week, a tradition I continue today. Nowadays, I write at least once a month.

2015-06-20-1434839832-8805965-Pic54.jpg
My dad, my mom, and our kids enjoy Rock City on the Tennessee-Georgia border off Lookout Mountain
.

But I realized how important it was to have a dad when so many other kids in college didn’t have one. One friend lost his to a heart attack. Another had his father tell him, to his face, that he didn’t want him or his mother. There stories of divorce and a lack of caring. My wife’s father suffered from alcoholism and also divorced his wife less than a month before we were married.

Dr. Quincy Brown, Associate Pastor for Serve Ministries Peachtree City UMC emailed me a great Father’s Day sermon titled “Growing Pains,” discussing an episode from that TV show involving an absentee father, and the pain inflicted on the son, played by Leonardo DiCaprio. Dr. Brown related a recent tale about a barbershop conversation, when he said “It takes a man to teach a boy to be a man,” which was supported by fathers and mothers in attendance.

“I went on further to explain that in my experience, no mother or any other woman can ever make a boy or a man love himself as a man. An attractive woman might make him feel terrific for the moment, but she still can’t make him feel loved deep down inside or feel that he is a man, no matter how attractive she might be. A man may even be “love struck” when he meets a beautiful woman and may even want to marry her. If he does, he may be in for a rude awakening, because when the passion cools down he’ll be faced with the pain and reality of his own loneliness and emptiness that festers from his unhealed father wound.

And then to avoid facing his pain, he’ll look to another performance, climb another mountain, or seek another beautiful woman…and another…in attempts to prove to himself that he is a man. Or he may try to deaden the pain through alcohol, drugs or addictive behaviors which can eventually ruin his health, get cancer, die of a heart attack, and never get close to the ones he loves, or ruin those relationships. That is, he’ll keep “acting out” until he faces why he looks in the wrong places for the love he never received as a child.

Expressed in each young man in the barbershop story of abandonment from their fathers is that every man craves deep, intimate connections with other men. But unfortunately, men are often left without the tools for creating these loving, nurturing relationships. A big reason for this has to do with the primary role fathers typically play in families. Rather than nurturing their sons or developing intimacy with them, fathers often spend the majority of their time enforcing the rules.

The absentee-show-up-as-you-please, stoic, and unemotional approaches to life are often accompanied by a seemingly unreachable set of expectations from fathers. Countless men all secretly carry around with them stories of fathers that they could not please: “All my life I have felt as if I just couldn’t cut it in my father’s eyes. It always seemed like the bar was raised just above my reach.”

Because so many boys do not have a father affirming their “leap into manhood,” that transition is often filled with feelings of fear, anger and frustration, instead of confidence and security. Lonely and discouraged boys become isolated and alienated men. In this isolated state, men continue to desire closeness and connection, but they often have no concept of how to achieve it.”

I found that I could handle all kinds of challenges in life, from college, to the corporate world, to building a relationship with a wonderful person, to creating a great pair of kids. I have all kinds of tools that I can call upon in these situations, from both parents. Whether it is a work ethic, a fun-time activity to share, all kinds of knowledge, how to love another, and respect for the Almighty, they set me on a path that was very different from some friends. Standardized tests will reveal I’m not always the sharpest tool in the shed, but I had great parental teachers in all things that helped me make up the difference.

Why I Wear YOGASMOGA Clothing When I Teach Yoga

“What do you think of Western Civilization?” asked a journalist in an apocryphal exchange with Gandhi.
I think it would be a good idea,” Gandhi replied.

The United States of America was built on slavery and exploitation of workers and if the statistics in John Oliver’s amazing exposé on cheap fashion are accurate, then we can all be proud that we’re not quitters.

Oliver claims that the chairman of H&M is the 28th richest person in the world and the co-founder of Zara is the 4th richest person in the world, primarily due to the fact that only 2% of the clothing we wear in this country is produced in the United States and the rest is produced around the world in sweatshops and sometimes by children.

The founder of Lululemon famously claimed that outsourcing production of his yoga clothing to Asia and employing children was a good way of spreading wealth to the less fortunate. That’s almost like saying slavery was a good thing because there were just too many people living in Africa and they would have died of starvation if we had not brought them to the new world.

As Thomas Piketty reports in “Capital in the 21st Century,” income inequality will continue to grow because as billionaire Nick Hanauer bravely states in his TEDTalk, wealthy people like him don’t create jobs; hiring more people (particularly in America which has bizarre concepts such as “minimum wage”) is a last resort for corporations that are more concerned with enlarging profits than with silly ideas such as fairness and human rights.

Look, let’s be honest: we are all the beneficiaries of virulent capitalism — from the foreign cars we drive to the disposable clothing we wear to the plethora of food choices we have to the iPhones in our pockets. And I’m not going to be nominated for sainthood anytime soon (I’m sitting here typing this article on my Apple computer and I’m wearing GAP outlet store sweatpants) but there is another paradigm… another way of conducting business that doesn’t exploit others… that doesn’t see trade as a zero-sum game… that pays people honestly for their time, talent and effort.

A mile from my home is a YOGASMOGA store and being somewhat of a traditionalist when it comes to yoga I was initially put off by the name. Then I learned that it was founded by an Indian brother and sister so I decided to check it out.

The first thing the retail experience associate Morgan told me about it was that all of the clothing was made in America and that the dying process was eco-friendly. Wow! Then I found out that YOGASMOGA stays true to the ethos of yoga from design to delivery; every step of the process maintains sustainable practices. Their high-quality proprietary fabrics are produced in California not too far from their Brentwood store and each piece is colored with formaldehyde-free dyes and monitored by the most stringent EPA standards so that the colors don’t fade or bleed or expose our bodies or the environment to toxins.

YOGASMOGA’s idea of sustainability also means that every piece is cut and manufactured domestically, which means less gas used on transporting goods.

I spoke with marketing director Faith Shea and she told me that, “It also means camaraderie and appreciation for every member of the YOGASMOGA team. Everyone in the company knows every member of the production process — from the creative people to production people to the retail floor salespeople. It’s not surprising to see members of corporate working side-by-side with factory employees, or fulfillment center managers grabbing coffee with the e-commerce team.”

In addition, Faith told me that, “Understanding that textile production is typically done in some of the world’s most impoverished communities, YOGASMOGA recognizes its obligation to give back which is why we created the Namaskár Foundation, which coordinates the manufacture and sales of hand woven bracelets made in remote villages of the Himalayas.  Each bracelet is sold by YOGASMOGA for $ 10 and the net proceeds of all sales benefit healthcare, education and micro-lending initiatives for Himalayan women and their families.”

As yoga teachers we have to be the change we want to see in the world which means making ethical purchases and insuring that everyone gets paid fairly for their time, talent, and effort. And that’s why I am going to wear YOGASMOGA clothing when I teach yoga. Not only because the clothing feels great on my body and is well-made but because every human being deserves to be treated with dignity; we have to stop corporate greed from exacerbating the inequalities in our civilization, we have to re-learn how to conduct business ethically like they are doing at YOGASMOGA.

Yes, Mister Gandhi, Western civilization would be a good idea.

Carnegie Mellon Students Create Interactive Graphic Novel To Teach How To Stop Sexual Assault

A class at Carnegie Mellon University has created an interactive graphic novel aimed at helping students better understand how to spot warning signs and intervene to stop sexual assault in real social situations.

The online game, “Decisions that Matter,” walks users through various scenarios on campus. Your character might experience catcalling, notice someone being groped by a friend or go to a party where a sexual assault may or may not take place, depending on the choices you make. The game is meant to provide a better way for students to understand how an approach called “bystander intervention” actually works.

cmu decisions that matter

The class’ goal was to create something students wouldn’t “roll their eyes” at, unlike some other products on the market.

“We think this is really different — a welcome experience — that makes people want to think harder about it,” said Andy Norman, an adjunct faculty member in CMU’s philosophy department.

“One of the things I first said when they came to me,” said Jessica Klein, CMU’s coordinator of gender programs and sexual violence prevention, “I said, ‘I am so tired of these cheesy products with these standard stock photos of white people in a business setting.’ It’s so not relatable.”

In fact, the students are so pleased with their project, they’re offering it for free to other colleges to use in their freshman orientation programs. Klein said her office is discussing how they’ll incorporate it into their own schoolwide efforts. One possibility is that the school will hold small group sessions, perhaps within a fraternity or led by a resident adviser, where students can play through the game and then discuss it.

The interdisciplinary project course is designed to combine social sciences with technology in ways that address actual issues in society. The class, part of CMU’s Entertainment Technology Center, went through 30 revisions of the game’s script and play-tested the results. Students were trying to guard against elements “that sounded corny or sounded too preachy, or [where] the point was too obvious,” Norman said.

“They worked very hard to make sure the story is not predictable and the answers you are expected to give are not predictable,” he explained.

cmu well it might

Savannah Badalich, a student at the University of California, Los Angeles, noted with approval that the game includes “a diverse group of students saying things students would actually say.”

“I love that it covers sexual harassment, and in a real setting off the bat,” said Badalich, who founded the anti-rape group 7000 In Solidarity at UCLA. Sexual harassment is one of the hardest things to explain to students, she said — especially certain ideas, like how catcalling is actually harassment.

Badalich added that she hopes “Decisions that Matter” will eventually also incorporate stalking, intimate partner violence and LGBTQ relationships.

If the game doesn’t address those issues, then it “erases the experiences of LGBTQ survivors and male survivors,” said Tracey Vitchers, chair of the nonprofit advocacy group Students Active for Ending Rape.

“Other problematic aspects of ‘Decisions that Matter’ have to do with the positioning of the characters themselves,” Vitchers told The Huffington Post. “[Character] Natalie is positioned as having very little agency, which reinforces negative stereotypes about survivors and/or potential survivors. And Luke, her love interest, is positioned as an unintentional aggressor who simply doesn’t understand that what he is doing is wrong.”

Vitchers said she’s not a fan of most other products on the market, usually in the form of apps, that claim to offer a way for potential victims to stop attacks. While she agrees that bystander intervention can help create a community emphasis on stopping rape, Vitchers said she’s worried colleges will focus too much on these approaches at the expense of discussing consent.

But Klein hopes the game will help reach people who do not think they’re capable of perpetrating this type of violence, as well as people who might intervene in a situation.

“It’s so easy for people to say, ‘Well, I wouldn’t have gone to that place in the first place,’ and that’s so victim-blaming,” Klein said. “You don’t know what you would do unless you’re actually in that situation. [In this game], you’re confronting what you actually might do in that situation.”

Mom Creates Comic To Teach 7-Year-Old Daughter To Accept Her Natural Beauty

When 7-year-old Natalie McGriff struggled to embrace her natural black beauty, her mom was the first one to encourage her to love her hair and her beautiful brown skin and to apply the confidence that comes with self-acceptance.

But it wasn’t easy.

Natalie didn’t see herself reflected on TV and among the toys she owned — and because of this lack of representation began to describe herself as “ugly,” said her mother, Angie Nixon.

Nixon was determined to teach her daughter valuable lessons on self-image and self-love.

“I started a Facebook group called ‘Natalie You Are Beautiful’ where strangers and friends could post positive affirmations for her,” Nixon told The Huffington Post. “She enjoyed reading them but it still wasn’t helping her.”

Invested in her mission, Nixon took a more creative approach. She hit on the idea of a comic book that would portray the 7-year-old as a superhero with crime-fighting afro puffs. The hero’s curly hair, a trait that Natalie found hard to accept, became her crowning glory that came with special magical powers.

Natalie was immediately on board. She gave her mom story ideas for the comic and the two made the book together.

Shortly after, the pair launched The Adventures Of Moxie Girl, a comic starring a fictional Natalie who activates the superpowers in her magical puffs to fend off book-eating monsters that attack her local library.

“I was hoping to improve and raise the self-esteem of my daughter. I also wanted to instill in her a love for reading,” Nixon said. “I wanted her to realize how powerful she is and that she shouldn’t have to change for anything.”

moxie girl

Nixon submitted the comic book to a crowdfunding festival in their hometown of Jacksonville, Florida, where attendees cast ballots on who would take home the large cash prize.

It turned out Natalie wasn’t the only one who fell in love with Moxie Girl — voters championed the idea and daughter and mother took home $ 16,400 to put towards a larger print run for the comic. The book will come out in June, Nixon announced on Instagram.

Now Natalie has much stronger self-esteem — and so does Nixon. She advises other parents to always feed their children positive affirmations and model the self-respect they want their kids to have.

“How can I tell my daughter her hair is beautiful in its natural state, if I alter mine?” she said. “I have to embrace my natural beauty before I am truly able to tell her to embrace hers.”

“We have to work on ourselves as parents first. We have to model the behavior that we want to see in our children,” Nixon said.

Teaching Information Fluency: How to Teach Students to Be Efficient, Ethical, and Critical Information Consumers

Teaching Information Fluency: How to Teach Students to Be Efficient, Ethical, and Critical Information Consumers

Teaching Information Fluency describes the skills and dispositions of information fluency adept searchers. Readers will receive in-depth information on what it takes to locate, evaluate, and ethically use digital information. The book realistically examines the abilities of Internet searchers today in terms of their efficiency and effectiveness in finding online information, evaluating it and using it ethically. Since the majority of people develop these skills on their own, rather than being taught, the strategies they invent may suffice for simple searches, but for more complex tasks, such as those required by academic and professional work, the average person s performance is adequate only about 50% of the time. The book is laid out in five parts: an introduction to the problem and how search engine improvements are not sufficient to be of real help, speculative searching, investigative searching, ethical use and applications of information fluency. The intent of the book is to provide readers ways to improve their performance as consumers of digital information and to help teachers devise useful ways to integrate information fluency instruction into their teaching, since deliberate instruction is needed to develop fluency. Since it is unlikely that dedicated class time will be available for such instruction, the approach taken embeds information fluency activities into classroom instruction in language arts, history and science. Numerous model lessons and resources are woven into the fabric of the text, including think-alouds, individual and group search challenges, discussions, assessments and curation, all targeted to Common Core State Standards as well as information fluency competencies.

For many visitors to Hawaii, it can be difficult to get a glimpse of the local color and culture. After all, if you stay in Waikiki for your whole vacation, you’ll never hear pidgin phrases like “da kine” — which can mean anything you want it to — or understand the local practice of only using the words mauka (mountain-side) and makai (ocean-side) when giving directions.

Thankfully, Hawaii Vines — a Facebook page that hopes to spread aloha with Hawaii humor — offers 7-second windows into the vibrant, fun-loving and diverse culture on the islands. Below, 7 of our favorites:

What Gay Families Can Teach the Duck Dynasty Dude

2013-12-27-homosexual_1746767c.jpg

No matter what religion you are or are not, the holidays are usually a time for family. I guess we tend to notice other families more around this time because everyone is out shopping, celebrating, and doing what families do together every November through December.

This Halloween, my friend and I took her four year old son out trick-or-treating in my neighborhood in Los Angeles. I live right near a school, on a quiet, tree-lined street, so we figured this would be a great place for festivities. As we walked down the sidewalk, several porch lights were lit up, but when we knocked on the doors — there was either no answer or the people inside were not prepared.

“What the heck?” I said, “There are kids all over this neighborhood — why isn’t anyone playing?”

Then we saw a door all lit up with fall-like decorations, so we thought that was a good bet. But when we knocked, a particularly rude woman came out and said, “We don’t celebrate Halloween. It’s rude to just go knocking on people’s doors!”

Yikes. What is wrong with these people? I thought. I told my friend we should try closer to the school. As we turned the corner, we saw a line of about ten kids under the age of eight coming towards us. They were wearing glowing bracelets and lead at the front by a festively dressed gay dad, with his husband watching the back of the line. The dads and kids were singing some sort of Halloween song and having a great time — so we stopped and asked them where we could find other houses that were celebrating. They invited us to their neighborhood, which was a few blocks over.

When we got there, EVERY house was decorated and every parent was not only handing out candy, but very involved — getting their kids dressed, telling them scary stories, building Haunted Houses. Every parent also happened to be a gay parent.

Throughout the holiday season I have watched these families interact. And I couldn’t help but remember that less than five years ago, not far from this neighborhood, I was stopped on a street corner by a group of picketers trying to convince me to sign a petition against gay marriage.

“Why do you care so much?” I asked.

One woman answered, “Gay marriage threatens traditional marriage!”

“The only one who can threaten YOUR marriage is YOU,” I laughed.

This particular woman was there with her child and went as far as to say that (gay) men have no maternal instinct and shouldn’t be raising kids — alluding to them most likely being pedophiles. This was not the first time or nearly the last time I have heard this sick statement.

I happen to be a straight woman, raised in a traditional two-parent home — with a mom and dad that loved the hell out of my siblings and me. Growing up in the melting pot of Los Angeles, we were fortunate enough to live around a diverse group of people. As a child, I knew a lot of gay men and women and it neither confused me, nor caused me to become gay.

Now as an adult, my experience in general has been that gay parents tend to be extremely involved in their children’s lives and try just a little bit harder than their heterosexual counterparts. I suppose it’s because they have to. If you’re heterosexual, you can marry (and divorce!) whoever you like. You can also get pregnant by accident.

Gay couples have had to fight to have their relationships recognized. If they want children, they have to save, plan, and pray that either their in vitro works or that they are able to adopt. In order to go through what they go through, you have to really WANT a family.

As a heterosexual, this has taught me that family should never be taken for granted and secondly, I thank my lucky stars I haven’t had to fight as they have.

In the past few years, we have come a long way with regards to treatment of gay Americans, but we have a long way to go. We got the Phil Robertson from Duck Dynasty all over every headline last week because of racist and anti-gay statements, which have outraged some and caused others to say, ‘Meh. He’s a redneck saying redneck stuff.’ Same way I’ve heard people excuse racism in older people because they ‘came from a different generation.’ It was wrong then and it’s wrong now.

As the New Year draws near, my hope is that we embrace love wherever it is found and however it looks and that we learn from our differences — instead of being afraid of them. But most importantly, that we look at OURSELVES so that we need not be ‘threatened’ by the lives of others.
