Former Special Education Teacher Allegedly Caught with Victim While Awaiting Sex Assault Trial

A former special education teacher in Connecticut who is awaiting trial for allegedly having sex with two students is in more trouble after authorities say that she was recently caught with one of her alleged victims in her car, PEOPLE confirms.

Laura Ramos, 32, was charged last year with two counts of second-degree sexual assault after police claim she admitted to having sex with one of her 18-year-old special education students.

She was later hit with an additional sexual assault charge after police said that she allegedly had sexual contact with another student.

As she awaited trial, Ramos was told not to have contact with her alleged victims and was freed on $ 50,000 bond.

Instead, according to police, Ramos has continued to have contact with one of her former students. Police say she was pulled over in late in June a beachside community in Connecticut where she was found to be driving with one of the alleged victims.

As a result, Ramos has been charged with violation of a protective order, according to court records viewed by PEOPLE.

The case against her began last year after the principal of Central High School in Bridgeport, where she taught, called police on June 9, 2017. According to the police report obtained by PEOPLE at the time, another teacher reported that a student had told him Ramos was allegedly having sex with one of her special education students.

According to this teacher, the student claimed that Ramos had been texting him about “her guy,” who didn’t want to have sex anymore and whom this student believed to be the victim.

This student said the victim was often seen with Ramos — “making eyes at each other, like flirting” — according to the Connecticut Post.

Ramos initially denied the allegations when questioned by police on June 12 but, in a later interview, allegedly admitted to having sex with one of her students from December to April, usually in her car, according to the paper.

At the time, Ramos resigned from her job “in lieu of … termination proceedings,” according to local TV station WVIT.

Prosecutors are seeking to revoke Ramos’ bond and remand her to prison while she awaits trial. A hearing will be held on Friday.

Ramos’ attorney, Edward Gavin, did not respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment on Thursday, but he told the Post, “Laura Ramos has faithfully attended every court appearance and will continue to do so. We will address the motion at the hearing.”

If convicted, she faces up to 10 years in prison.

Kindergarten Teacher Kidnapped 16-Year-Old to Create Child Porn: He ‘Manipulates and Rationalizes Like a Child’

A former Las Vegas kindergarten teacher was sentenced to life in prison on Monday for kidnapping a 16-year-old girl and creating child pornography with her in his apartment for two months, PEOPLE confirms.

Melvyn Sprowson, 48, was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 12½ years by Judge Stefany Miley, court documents obtained by PEOPLE show.

In March, Sprowson was convicted on four counts of unlawful use of a minor in the production of pornography, one count of first-degree kidnapping and one count of child abuse. He had pleaded not guilty and represented himself.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports that at his sentencing hearing on Monday, Sprowson told Judge Miley that he still loved the victim.

Sprowson met the teen through a Craigslist ad he posted in August 2013, reports CBS8 Las Vegas.

Prosecutors alleged that he had the victim send him photos of her wearing very little clothing. The two exchanged several photographs, and eventually met at a roller-skating rink, reports the Review-Journal.

• Want to keep up with the latest crime coverage? Click here to get breaking crime news, ongoing trial coverage and details of intriguing unsolved cases in the True Crime Newsletter.

Sprowson and the victim developed a relationship after a few weeks. When the girl’s disapproving mother discovered her daughter’s contact with Sprowson, she took away her daughter’s phone as punishment, reports the Review-Journal reports.

Sprowson said he intended on keeping the girl in his apartment until she turned old enough that the two could get married, the Review-Journal reports. According to the victim’s testimony at trial, Sprowson removed her from school and prevented boys from entering his apartment while she was there.

While the girl was in his apartment, she wasn’t allowed to have any contact with her family. When Sprowson left the apartment with the victim, he concealed her identity with baggy clothes and a baseball cap. One time, Sprowson drove the victim right past her family’s house, reports the Review-Journal.

After Sprowson was charged but released from custody, he reached out to the victim on Instagram, reports the Review-Journal.

“This is someone who is absolutely incapable of doing two things: number one, doing what is right, and number two, knowing what he did was wrong,” Prosecutor Jacqueline Bluth said, as reported by the Review-Journal. “I’ve never once heard him take responsibility or accountability for what he has done.”

The paper also reports the victim’s grandmother asked Miley for the maximum sentence.

“This is a grown man who lies, manipulates and rationalizes like a child,” the victim’s grandmother said. “So I don’t see any hope of him not doing the same thing to another child.”

During his sentencing, Sprowson said, “This is an issue of age of consent. This is not an issue of me being a criminal and having criminal intent,” according to the Review-Journal. “One day I will die, and I will wake up in the arms of Jesus. That is my sole consolation in this whole process. The Lord knows what happened. I have a clear conscious before God.”

Sprowson at one point seemed to insist that he should not have even been charged with a crime, reports the Review-Journal.

“If she was 18 and not 16, would I have been charged with kidnapping? The answer is absolutely no,” he said. “If she was 18 and not 16, would I have been charged with child abuse? The answer is no,” Sprowson said.

Sprowson told the judge he plans to appeal, according to NBC3 News Las Vegas.

N.J. Substitute Middle School Teacher Accused of Sexually Assaulting Student and Sending Him Explicit Messages: Reports

A New Jersey substitute middle school teacher is accused of sexually assaulting a male student in addition to allegedly sending him sexually explicit messages online, the Associated Press, CBS News and NJ.com report.

Nataly Lopez, 27, has been charged with first-degree aggravated sexual assault, second-degree sexual assault and third-degree endangering the welfare of a child, the Union County, New Jersey, Sheriff’s Office said in a statement obtained by CBS News.

She allegedly had sex with the student in her car at least twice and exchanged messages with him for weeks, according to the AP.

Lopez taught in Elizabeth, New Jersey, but was not an employee of the school district there, according to these reports. Instead she worked for Source4Teachers, a third-party company that staffed substitute teachers for the district.

The age of the student involved has not been released. Law enforcement could not immediately be reached for comment on Monday.

• Want to keep up with the latest crime coverage? Click here to get breaking crime news, ongoing trial coverage and details of intriguing unsolved cases in the True Crime Newsletter.

CBS News reports that Lopez was arrested without incident at her home on Thursday afternoon and is being held in the Union County Jail.

In a statement, according to NJ.com, Elizabeth Schools Superintendent Olga Hugelmeyer said the district banned Lopez from entering its schools as soon as they became aware of the allegations against her.

“Law enforcement and social service agencies were notified, as was the substitute’s employer,” Hugelmeyer said. Source4Teachers said in its own statement that Lopez had been blocked from working with client school districts until police have finished investigating.

Lopez underwent both state and federal background checks as part of her employment, the company said, according to NJ.com. Her “background checks … showed no previous history of any illegal or inappropriate action,” the company said.

Lopez pleaded not guilty to her charges on Friday. She remains in custody and a detention hearing is scheduled for Wednesday, according to court officials.

It is unclear if she has retained an attorney who could comment on her behalf.

The school district did not immediately return a message seeking comment and a Source4Teachers spokesman was unavailable for comment on Monday.

Why Do I Need a Teacher When I’ve got Google?: The essential guide to the big issues for every teacher

Why Do I Need a Teacher When I’ve got Google?: The essential guide to the big issues for every teacher

Why do I need a teacher when I’ve got Google? is just one of the challenging, controversial and thought-provoking questions Ian Gilbert poses in this urgent and invigorating book. Questioning the unquestionable, this fully updated new edition will make you re-consider everything you thought you knew about teaching and learning, such as: Are you simply preparing the next generation of unemployed accountants? What do you do for the ‘sweetcorn kids’ who come out of the education system in pretty much the same state as when they went in? What’s the real point of school? Exams – So whose bright idea was that? Why ‘EQ’ is fast becoming the new ‘IQ’. What will your school policy be on brain-enhancing technologies? Which is the odd one out between a hamster and a caravan? With his customary combination of hard-hitting truths, practical classroom ideas and irreverent sense of humour, Ian Gilbert takes the reader on a breathless rollercoaster ride through burning issues of the twenty-first century, considering everything from the threats facing the world and the challenge of the BRIC economies to the link between eugenics and the 11+. As wide-ranging and exhaustively-researched as it is entertaining and accessible, this book is designed to challenge teachers and inform them – as well as encourage them – as they strive to design a twenty-first century learning experience that really does bring the best out of all young people. After all, the future of the world may just depend on it

Geeking Out With Misty Copeland’s First Ballet Teacher On The Bigness Of Today

misty copeland

“I realized that I could put her body into positions and she could hold them and all of the positions were beautiful.”

Tuesday morning, the American Ballet Theatre stopped delaying the inevitable and finally appointed Misty Copeland a principal ballerina. The first black principal in ABT’s 75-year history, Copeland is also a bonafide cultural icon — a Time cover star with more than a half a million followers on Instagram. As Copeland’s famously varied fans could tell you, the 32-year-old is a true anomaly: neither white nor lanky, but blessed with a physically extraordinary body deemed by short-sighted gatekeepers early in her career as unfit for ballet.

The challenges started early for Copeland. Much of her childhood played out in a two-room motel suite with five siblings and a single mom in San Pedro, California. She also came dauntingly late to ballet: she was 13, an age when most future students have been training half their lives, when a ballet teacher coaxed the shy, watchful girl down from the bleachers at the San Pedro YMCA to join a class unfolding in the gym. That teacher was Cindy Bradley, a soft-spoken former company dancer who would go on to play an intimate and complex role in Copeland’s life, even raising the dancer in her home for a time amidst an ugly custody battle.

We rang Bradley at her studio, where she continues to teach ballet. In between conversations with students, she told us what it feels like when a teacher’s wildest dreams come true.

Here is a blast from the past – Capezio ad when Misty was a spokesperson circa 2002: ENJOY!

Posted by Misty Copeland on Thursday, August 26, 2010

What has today been like?
The phone keeps ringing! It’s just incredible.

What was it that led you to persuade Misty to join your class that day, nearly two decades ago?
The fact that she was watching so intently and that she seemed very shy. I knew she had to be asked. She wouldn’t come down without being asked. She was 13, and she was just tiny.

Did you see something in her immediately?
When she came down, she took the bar and we started class and I realized that I could put her body into positions and she could hold them and all of the positions were beautiful. I knew immediately that she was extremely gifted.

Was it her build, or some innate ability?
It was the lines. I would take her leg and pull it out, extend it, and then take her foot and point it and say, “Ok, hold that.” She was able to make beautiful lines from the beginning. She just had all the makings of a beautiful dancer.

misty copeland

Where dancers typically master the art of standing on pointe over the course of several years, Copeland — seen here at age 14 — took just three months, according to Bradley.

And no training.
She was on her drill team at middle school, but that was it.

You’ve said before that you were struck with a vision of a possible future for the little girl in front of you. Does today’s news come close to what you saw in your mind on that basketball court?
I think at the time, I was seeing her potential of what she could do as a dancer. I also knew that she could possibly be in a position of being a role model. But all of this took the incredible hard work — continuous hard work — by Misty. I knew she was going to do great dancing, but this is just almost too impossible to even dream of.

Do you see her young self when you watch her dance today?
Absolutely. We actually just got back from New York City where we saw her do “Swan Lake.” When I look into her eyes, she is still that sweet girl. That heart that we fell in love with is still there, that I think the world has fallen in love with. They’ve fallen in love with Misty, not just her dancing.

“I will forever fight, performing like it’s my last show.” #lifeinmotion

That Super-Hot Math Teacher Just Landed a Magazine Cover

The Internet’s favorite hot math teacher, Pietro Boselli, has gone from impressing lecture halls with his biceps to landing the cover of Attitude magazine.

One of Boselli’s students at University College London made the connection back in March, and a quick dig through social media confirms that Boselli is both brawny and brainy. Per his LinkedIn account, he graduated with honors and holds engineering degrees, while Instagram confirms he’s no stranger to the runway and has competed in the bodybuilding world.

But as proof that being that ridiculously good at taking selfies isn’t all sunshine and rainbows, Boselli has spoken out about the downside to being so attractive. “Fellow professors and students have taken me less seriously because of my modelling career, so much so that I’ve felt ashamed of it at times,” he told Grazia, saying he related to Kit Harington’s comments about feeling uncomfortable with being viewed as a heartthrob. “People generally assume you can’t be intelligent if you’re a model. I was so scared of being undermined or taken less seriously than other students when at university that I kept my modeling career under wraps. I canceled my contract with the agency, took my pictures offline, and erased my modelling experience from my CV.”

Pietro, trust us: Being crazy handsome and super intelligent is not a bad thing.

Come watch a male model cuddling a tiny puppy and thank us later.

A Writer’s Writer and Teacher Is Gone

2015-05-15-1431706527-9942360-ZinsserobitNYTmaster6755.12.2015.jpg

New York Times 5.12.2015

On May 11, 2015, at the age of 92, Bill Zinnser died in his home on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. Many will wonder, who was he? A sports star? A celebrity? An inventor? A diplomat? Well, while he was a bit of all of these he was none. He was a writer and one of the greatest teachers of non-fiction writing and memoir we have had the honor to grace the Western world.

A former WW II correspondent and journalist, whose scope ranged from combat to culture (he wrote over 600 movie and theatre reviews), it was not until he was in his 50s that he took up the cudgel of helping others write well. He remarked that he was complaining to his wife about how poorly was the writing he encountered in so many authors that she exhorted him to do something about it.

The result is a shelf full of books on writing well – as well as studies on American pop music and baseball (two of his passions); 19 books in all. Bill Zinsser’s signature book, “On Writing Well“, has become a treasure and bible for non-fiction writers, and has sold over 1.5 million copies.

I met Bill Zinsser late in his life, and not at the beginning of mine. In 2011, I joined some 20 others for an evening writing workshop he taught at The New School in NYC (Ink-Stained for Life: What Makes for a Great Teacher). I stayed in contact with him after that, as his physical life became more compromised but not his wit or wisdom. My Zinsser experience fueled my passion for writing, as well as an appreciation that writing is a craft — but one that must be infused with the writer’s authenticity and humanity.

Writing, as Zinsser liked to say, is a craft no less and no more worthy than plumbing or carpentry. All take the same determination to get the job done well: that means waking each day and getting to work. There is no mood for writing, as there is no mood for plumbing. Sit down and write, he used to proclaim. Make no bones about it, writing well must be learned, word by word, day after day. But if you do try, I can hear Zinsser’s dictums. Begin with simplicity and clarity. Achieve brevity and make clutter the enemy. Don’t weary your reader with dense language because we are rich with alternatives. A reader shouldn’t have to labor to understand; a writer owes the reader the pleasure of reading, which should not be a chore. His crowning principle, I think, is humanity. The writer must be a person, someone the reader can trust. Otherwise, it’s just words.

Eight semesters ago, with my colleague Dr. Deborah Cabaniss, I began teaching medical writing for the lay public to doctors and neuroscientists at the Columbia University Medical School Department of Psychiatry. More recently, this teaching expanded to the New York Academy of Medicine, the American Psychiatric Association’s annual meetings, and to young writers associated with Commonweal Magazine. I am amazed at the hunger so many professionals (young and older, early and advanced career) have to speak (write) their mind, outside the confines of professional journals and scientific venues. And goodness knows, we need their educated ideas to counter the avalanche of uninformed opinion written by anyone with a keyboard that appears throughout social media sites.

I owe Bill Zinsser, as do so many others, a big thank you for giving me the prescription for what it takes to be a good writer and teacher. It all may sound simple, since in fact it is when well done, but that doesn’t mean it is easy to achieve. Whenever I write, even today with this piece, I hear his slightly cranky, ever kind, Yankee voice urging me on and telling me to be sure to get it right.

Parking with my Sexy Teacher

Parking with my Sexy Teacher

Cynthia knows what’s in store when Mr. Richmond gives her “that look” after class. He wants to take the barely-legal schoolgirl out in his car at lunch hour. He wants to park with her and kiss her and touch her and make her scream with delight. But what does Cynthia want? LEXI WOOD is a sock puppet who came to life one night while her keeper was out picking up Chinese food. When nobody’s around, she bashes her face against a typewriter until stories come out. And those stories are shocking. Lexi’s exterior is 53% acrylic, 37% nylon, and 10% recycled tinsel. On the inside, she’s full of bloodlust, wanderlust, lust-lust, bathtub gin, and pills she found on the floor. She also got into those tranquilizers you give your cat to get it in the travel carrier. You shouldn’t leave those things lying around. Handmade in Vulgaria. When she’s feeling dirty, Lexi likes to be held in soapy water and rubbed vigorously. In her spare time, she sits on the shelf, waiting for someone to shove a fist in her hole. Who would? Lexi Wood!
