Shaq Loves Big Guys, Hates Super Teams

NEW YORK — Shaquille O’Neal is a champion of the big guy.
The retired NBA star, who played for the Magic, Lakers, Celtics, Heat, Suns and Cavaliers during his 19-year Hall of Fame career, is now a sports analyst for “Inside the NBA” on TNT, an actor, real estate developer and businessman.
But it was in his role as the big and tall style ambassador for J.C. Penney that brought O’Neal to New York Monday night. He’s had a collection of big and tall men’s wear with the retailer, called Shaquille O’Neal XLG, for just under a year, and this spring, partnered with the store and Wilhelmina modeling agency to host a model search. The three winners — Chukwukere “A.K.” Ekeh, Ricardo “Ricky” Vichot and Jordan Alexander “Alex” Cochran — are featured in the Penney’s fall campaign for the collection and have been signed to Wilhelmina’s Titan division of big and tall models.
Prior to a panel discussion, O’Neal sat down with WWD to discuss what it’s like finding clothes when you’re 7-feet, 1-inch, 325 pounds, how he thinks the Reebok brand has been diluted since being owned by Adidas, and his distaste for NBA “super teams.”

Lingua Franca Teams With Artist-Activist Diana Weymar

Textile artist Diana Weymar has teamed with Lingua Franca for her “Tiny Pricks” project. For the first time, Weymar’s collection of subversive series of antique textiles, embroidered with short quotes by Donald Trump, is going on public display in New York. The Lingua Franca boutique on Bleecker Street will display works from the project from June 13 to early September, during which time the brand will also offer a series of limited-edition “Tiny Pricks” T-shirts, made from recycled materials.
“When Diana and I found each other on Instagram, an immediate connection was forged. We both picked up the needle as a way to cope during troubling times and I was so inspired by the community of resisters she’s helping to build,” said Lingua Franca’s Rachelle Hruska MacPherson.
Since starting the community-sourced project in 2018, the artist has amassed contributions from more than 400 people. The project is a nod to the women’s suffrage movement, and offers an antithesis to the fleeting quality of Twitter. Also, it’s cathartic: Weymar and Lingua Franca are encouraging others to add to the archive by adding their own hand-stitched work in line with the series, which include phrases such as “I want great climate” and “I’m the

CFDA Teams With Project for Designer Showcase at Vegas Show

The Council of Fashion Designers of America is expanding its association with the Project trade show, starting in August in Las Vegas.
The CFDA x Project initiative will bring five men’s wear designers to the show at the Las Vegas Convention Center within a new section called N:ow Lab, a concept space that will rotate each season. Project is moving from its longtime home at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center to join the women’s and footwear shows at the convention center from Aug. 12 through Aug. 14.
The designers participating in the first edition are Kenneth Nicholson, Lukhanyo Mdingi, NIHL, Sanchez-Kane and Willy Chavarria.
Mark Beckham, chief marketing officer of CFDA, said this initiative is intended to serve as a business platform, or “matchmaking,” for these designers to connect them with potential retail customers. It will not feature runway shows, but will be a “more commercial” push that will include networking events between the brands, retailers, media and influencers attending the show.
The designers were chosen to ensure they have the wherewithal to produce and deliver any orders they might receive from retailers at the show, he said.
“As the men’s wear industry grows, our partnership with Project further reinforces our mission to strengthen the

Model Behati Prinsloo Teams With Seven For All Mankind

LUCKY SEVEN: Model Behati Prinsloo won’t have a Super Bowl-sized audience like her husband Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levin did last weekend, but she is front-and-center for Seven For All Mankind.
The model is the focus of the Los Angeles-based denim and lifestyle brand’s spring campaign. Lensman Guy Aroch shot her along the California coast for the third installment of #wearemankind. The model is a familiar face with the fashion crowd, having worked with Victoria’s Secret, Elizabeth Arden and Swarovski, among others.
As a jeans kind of girl, she modeled styles with denim side stripes, fringe accents, unexpected soft fabrics and pops of color. Malcolm Jackson, Ali Tate Cutler, Alicia Herbeth and Josh Upshaw rounded out her supporting cast for the Delta Galil Industries-owned label. This time around, the “We Are Mankind” initiative plays up the layers that make up individuals. The brand will also be adding new denim and ready-to-wear styles for women and men.
Executives at the denim label met the model in October and appreciated “her genuine obsession with denim and admiration for Seven For All Mankin,” a company spokeswoman said. “What we love most about Behati is that she is more than meets the eye, beyond being in this

The collection features BAPE’s signature camouflage print in the French football club’s patriotic hues on sweatshirts, outerwear and accessories. T-shirts from the capsule mix the Japanese brand’s logo, a gorilla head, with the Paris Saint-Germain crest, a red Eiffel Tower.
The 13 pieces will launch in stores and online on Dec. 1. The collection will be available first at the BAPE store in the Marais district of Paris in honor of its first anniversary, before hitting flagships in the rest of the world.
The Instagram account for BAPE France announced the collaboration by posting a picture of the Parc des Princes stadium, where the Paris Saint-Germain has been the resident team since 1974, with both the BAPE and PSG logos visible on the field. The caption read “#IciCestParis” (“This is Paris”), the football club’s official tag line.

Jean Paul Gaultier Teams With Samba School for Rio Carnival

COSTUME PARTY: Moving from cabaret to carnival, Jean Paul Gaultier has partnered with leading samba school Grêmio Recreativo Escola de Samba Portela for the 2019 edition of the Rio Carnival in Brazil.
On March 4 at the city’s Sambadrome stadium, the school is to parade seven floats themed around the story of the late Brazilian samba singer Clara Nunes.
All of the troupe’s dancers will sport costumes designed by the couturier, working alongside iconic carnival designer Rosa Magalhães, Portela’s artistic director, and themed around the eagle, the school’s symbol. The traditional carnival costume is based on a lavish plumed headdress and heels.
Gaultier, who in September opened his “Fashion Freak Show” revue at the Folies Bergère in Paris, traveled to Rio de Janeiro last month to visit Portela’s hangarlike base in the city’s north, meet with Magalhães and learn about the history of the school. Founded in 1923, Portela is the biggest title holder of the Rio Carnival, having won 22 championships.

Danielle Guizio Teams With FDNY to Create Limited-Edition Capsule Collection

FOUR-ALARM FASHION: With a few relatives who are firefighters, Danielle Guizio understands the round-the-clock dedication that goes with the job. Now the New York-based contemporary designer has created a capsule collection with the New York City Fire Department. Developed to honor the work of New York’s bravest, the nine-piece collection of genderless streetwear features FDNY logos and incorporates uniform accents and fire truck insignia.
Four years into her own company, Guizio started her career as a stylist, working with Lady Gaga’s stylist among others. More recently, she started doing a little personal shopping on the side at the request of her friends including Halsey, whom she first met six years ago. One of Giuzio’s childhood friends is now the musician’s manager. The designer said she first got to know of Halsey via the Internet. “It might have even been before Instagram,” she said.
The pair became friends during their leaner days, when each was trying to make their way. At that time, Halsey was sleeping on the floor with two of Giuzio’s other friends in a New York apartment. As for lending a hand to Gaga’s wardrobe, Guizio said she grew up singing and dancing to the six-time Grammy winner’s music in

LONDON — 24 Sèvres is continuing its commitment to offer exclusive product from LVMH-owned labels that don’t have wide e-commerce presence.
After teaming with Céline on an exclusive range, the retailer’s next project includes the release of an exclusive capsule with Louis Vuitton.
Five of the most buzzy products from the label’s fall 2018 collection have been reissued for the capsule, including a black logo dress, the popular “Vanity” structured tote bag in taupe, the “Party” aviator sunglasses in blue-tinged frames and the famous Archlight sneakers recreated in a blue, yellow and white color palette.
“As the exclusive retailer for Louis Vuitton, 24 Sèvres has been a partner of the Maison since day one. This collaboration was a natural next step,” said a company representative, pointing to the retailer’s commitment to offering unique pieces that can’t be found anywhere else.
“This has informed the regular capsules and collaborations released since the launch in June 2017. Exclusive product is at the center of our product strategy.”

Thorsun Teams With Surf Lodge

George Sotelo has snagged a great summer job.
The founder and designer of Thorsun, a luxury men’s and women’s swimwear brand, has been named the Designer in Residence for the trendy Surf Lodge in Montauk, N.Y.
No, the gig doesn’t mean he’s spending the summer there hanging by the pool, but it does mean he’s designed the uniforms for the staff as well as the upholstery for the outdoor furniture.
Sotelo said he got to know the Surf Lodge team last summer when he did a charity pop-up there for Project Paz, which allowed him to actually sell to customers in person for the first time. “It was successful and super fun,” he said, “and I met a whole new demographic who had never heard of the brand.”
So when Surf Lodge founder Jayma Cardoso reached out to see if he’d follow Rachel Comey and Zimmerman as this year’s designer, he immediately agreed. The gig also allowed him to do women’s ready-to-wear for the first time — he designed three different patterned dresses for the staff. The men are being outfitted in surf shorts and sport shirts in one of his custom prints that he based on the color palette of the resort.

Huntsman Teams With Sotheby’s for First Online-Only Auction

TAILOR MADE: In partnership with Sotheby’s auction house, the Savile Row tailor Huntsman & Sons is staging its first online-only luxury lifestyle sale. Bidding starts May 22 and stretches until the end of June.
“At first I wasn’t interested in doing this collaboration, but then I started thinking of all the interesting things I wanted to produce, and before you know it, we had a lot of possibilities,” said Pierre Lagrange, Huntsman’s owner.
Lots range from bespoke jackets and sportswear to sporting goods and objects for the home.
Some of the pieces serve more than one purpose, such as a safari jacket with a backgammon print (for impromptu games in the Serengeti) and a walking stick that doubles as a cigarette holder, in the vein of James Bond. Other noteworthy pieces include those created in collaboration with Harley Davidson, Adidas and Reebok. There is also an orange suit jacket worn by Taron Egerton in the movie “Kingsman: The Golden Circle.”

Sofia Sanchez de Betak Teams With the Luxury Collection Hotels & Resorts for Japanese-Inspired Capsule Collection

ALL WRAPPED UP: The Luxury Collection Hotels & Resorts has recruited Sofia Sanchez de Betak to launch a capsule collection.
Thirty-plus styles will be featured in the Chufy x The Luxury Collection when it debuts next month at Bergdorf Goodman, The Webster, FiveStory and other international outposts. Known as “Chufy,” the Buenos Aires-born, New York-based art director and fashion consultant was literally on-the-go walking in New York during a phone interview Tuesday.
De Betak chatted enthusiastically despite a near run-in with an electric skateboarder, “a taxi driver fighting with a lady” and a messenger in search of directions. Having visited Japan three times in the past year, she quickly became a fan of the kimonos that were waiting in her hotel rooms upon arrival at the The Prince Gallery in Tokyo and the Suiran in Kyoto. Her new line for The Luxury Collection reinterprets classic styles and prints in “a more personal, upbeat and lively way.”
Generally not in the same place for more than two or three weeks at a time, she eased up on the travel a bit after the birth of her baby, Sakura, a name inspired by the Japanese word for cherry blossom. “Hold on. I actually have an

Tracy Reese Teams With Artist Mel Chin for Art Project Designed to Raise Awareness of Flint’s Water Crisis

EVERY LAST DROP: Conceptual artist Mel Chin recruited Tracy Reese to create a fashion element for his retrospective “All Over the Place” at the Queens Museum in New York.
Coproduced by the public art-focused nonprofit No Longer Empty, the exhibition will feature 70-plus examples of his work — drawings, paintings, sculpture, installations and videos. Running through Aug. 7, the multilocation show will include sites in Times Square and the Broadway-Lafayette subway station. Adept at revealing environmental and socioeconomic systems and injustices, Chin recruited the Detroit-born Reese for “Flint Fit,” a fashion project designed to magnify the water crisis in Flint, Mich.
At Chin’s suggestion, 90,000 used water bottles were collected by Flint residents, who continue to use bottled water for everyday purposes more than three years after lead-contaminated water became a citywide problem. Once shipped to Unifi in Greensboro, N.C., the bottles were shredded and converted into fabric. Reese then designed a water-inspired collection that included rainwear and swimwear. About 14 women at the St. Luke N.E.W. Center produced the nine looks, which will be unveiled in a fashion event Sunday in the museum’s Watershed Gallery.
Chin and Reese had never met before last summer, when he approached her about the prospect. “We

Celebrity Stylist Ilaria Urbinati Teams With Strong Suit

NEW YORK — Expect to see Armie Hammer sporting a black-and-white hopsack sport coat on a red carpet sometime soon.
The jacket is part of a collaboration between celebrity stylist Ilaria Urbinati and the Little Rock, Ark.-based Strong Suit that will be launching for spring.
The pair was introduced around two years ago by actress Cameron Richardson, and the result of that meeting will be a collection of men’s suits, sport coats and dress shirts under the Strong Suit by Ilaria Urbinati label that will launch at Nordstrom’s new men’s store slated to open in New York in April. The collection will also be carried at the retailer’s Los Angeles store at The Grove.
“Ilaria is genuinely looking for the best style for her clients,” said Jamie Davidson, founder and creative director of Strong Suit, which was purchased one year ago by Oxford Industries. “She cares about the substance of the clothes, not the branding. So I’m incredibly grateful that she decided to work with a little start-up from Little Rock.”
The negotiations with Nordstrom, which carries Strong Suit’s regular men’s collection at several stores, started over a year ago. But once they saw the collection, “they were totally on board with it,” he said.
