Wash. Teen Was Lured into Woods for Camping Trip Before Friend Allegedly Raped, Killed Him

The Washington 16-year-old who police allege was raped and beaten to death by his childhood friend and the friend’s brother was lured into the woods on the premise of a camping trip and then assaulted for nearly 45 minutes, according to charging documents obtained by PEOPLE.

The Lewis County Sheriff’s Office has charged Jonathon Adamson, 21, and his 16-year-old brother Benito Marquez with first-degree rape and murder in the death of Benjamin Eastman, who was last seen alive on June 23 before his body was found on June 28 on a remote parcel of land owned by Marquez’s relative.

According to the charging documents, Marquez, who is being charged as an adult, was a childhood friend of Ben’s. He and his brother allegedly lured Ben into the woods for a camping trip on June 24, but then knocked him to the ground and assaulted him for nearly 45 minutes.

The charging documents allege Adamson told police he and Marquez sexually assaulted Ben with a stick while he was still alive.

Before burying Ben, the brothers allegedly beat him in the head with a rock to ensure he was dead.

The brothers are also both charged with tampering with physical evidence and unlawful disposal of remains and are currently being held on $ 10 million bail. Information about whether they have entered a plea or retained attorneys was not immediately available.

Victim’s Father: ‘My Son Is Loved’

Ben lived with his father in Randle, and his father, Benjamin Eastman, sat in the front row Monday during the suspect’s court appearance, reports KOMONews.com.

“I wanted them to look at me, I wanted to look them in the eye,” the father told the outlet.

Ben’s father told the outlet that Ben was a joyful, happy teenager, and the two enjoyed camping, fishing and dirt biking together.

Ben’s father said there are “evil people out there. I don’t know what makes them tick. I don’t want to know. I’m loved, and my son was loved and that’s all I’m about.”

According to local station KIRO7, hundreds gathered for a vigil at the White Pass Junior and Senior High School in Randle. Principal Chris Schumaker said it was fitting the service began in the gym because Ben loved sports so much and was always in the gym.

Ben and his family were fans of the Miami Dolphins, and during the vigil, the family released aqua and orange balloons representing the Dolphins team colors, the outlet reports.

Teen Mom 2’s Javi Marroquin and Briana DeJesus Lock Lips in Steamy Social Media Post

Things are really heating up between Javi Marroquin and Briana DeJesus.

Over the weekend, the Teen Mom 2 lovebirds both shared a steamy photo of themselves locking lips on social media.

“King and Queen,” Marroquin wrote alongside the picture on Sunday, which featured the couple wearing color-coordinated outfits and kissing in front of a brick wall.

And on Saturday, DeJesus shared two other photos in addition to the snap, including one of Marroquin standing behind her with his arms around her waist. Letting the pictures speak for themselves, she captioned them with just a heart emoji.

In October, Marroquin told PEOPLE that he and DeJesus had “decided to make it official” after Teen Mom 2 reunited them for a reunion taping in Los Angeles.

“We are dating,” Marroquin said. “We’ve been friends for a while and we weren’t in a rush.”

The reality stars both have children from separate relationships. DeJesus, 23, has two daughters: 6-year-old daughter Nova with ex-boyfriend Devoin Austin, and 3-month-old daughter Stella with ex-boyfriend Luis Hernandez.

Marroquin shares 3-year-old son Lincoln with ex-wife Kailyn Lowry, who also stars on Teen Mom 2. He has a close relationship with his former-stepson, Isaac, from Lowry’s previous relationship with Jo Rivera.

RELATED VIDEO: Marriage Boot Camp Reality Stars: Kailyn & Javi Feud over ‘Infidelity’

Since making things official, the two have frequently posted about each other on social media, with Marroquin flying to Florida with Lincoln and his former stepson, Isaac (from Lowry’s previous relationship to Jo Rivera), to spend time with DeJesus, her daughters and her sister Brittney at a water park.

But even though Marroquin is dating his ex-wife’s costar, it seems everything is fine between him and Lowry.

In an Instagram post in mid-October, Marroquin shared a sweet post of himself kissing his ex on the cheek. “Despite everything that happened between us I’m happy we are at a place where we can go to events..have a good time and be civil,” he wrote. “We’re doing a pretty good job raising these kids 🙌🏻 @kaillowry #oneteam.”

There’s still drama between Marroquin’s ex-wife and his new girlfriend, however.

Two weeks ago, during part two of the Teen Mom 2 reunion, DeJesus said she didn’t think she and Lowry could ever be friends. “It’s not going to happen,” she said. “We tried today and it’s not working out.”

Hillary Clinton, Yara Shahidi Keynote Teen Vogue Summit in L.A.

“Thanks so much for all of your help,” Hillary Rodham Clinton said backstage at the inaugural Teen Vogue Summit on Saturday morning. As she posed for a photo with a large group of police officers at 72 and Sunny’s Playa Vista campus in Los Angeles, Clinton told the photographer, “This is a very important group. Take a good picture.” The former Secretary of State and presidential candidate had just completed the opening keynote conversation with activist and “Black-ish” actress Yara Shahidi.
While the question-and-answer session lasted 40 minutes, it took less than seven for the discussion to shift toward the previous night’s vote on tax reform. “In the last 24 hours, the Senate passed this absolutely horrible tax-cut plan,” Clinton said, as the crowd booed in support of her sentiment. “It’s great for Donald Trump and his family. It’s great for the billionaires who support him, but it’s going to make life much harder for middle-class families and poor families. It even cuts the tax deduction for teachers who buy supplies for their classrooms and their students.”

“Now it takes care of you if you have a private yacht or a private plane,” she continued, “but heaven forbid if you buy some

Elementary School Principal, 59, Accused of Asking Teen Girls to Go Skinny-Dipping at His Home

A 59-year-old Arizona elementary school principal was arrested on Tuesday after allegedly posting online ads asking teenage girls to go skinny-dipping with him at his house, PEOPLE confirms.

Karl Judd Waggoner is held on the suspicion of luring and aggravated luring of a minor. He remains in the Pinal County jail in Arizona in lieu of a $ 100,000 bond and is awaiting formal charges as the county attorney reviews the case, authorities say.

It was unclear Wednesday if he has retained an attorney.

Law enforcement began investigating Waggoner, a principal at Four Peaks Elementary School in Apache Junction, Arizona, after a detective with the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office came across an online ad on Craigslist asking for teen girls to come out to a skinny-dipping party at Waggoner’s home in nearby Scottsdale, Arizona.

A sex crimes detective then posed as a 14-year-old girl in order to engage Waggoner, who allegedly had “sexually inappropriate conversations, discussed engaging in sexual acts with the undercover detective and provided sexually explicit photos,” Pinal County Sheriff Mark Lamb tells PEOPLE.

“Our detective found the ad last week,” Lamb explains, alleging, “All through this holiday weekend, he was posting online and soliciting for young girls. We decided to move on it Tuesday morning and we picked him up near the school.”

• Want to keep up with the latest crime coverage? Click here to get breaking crime news, ongoing trial coverage and details of intriguing unsolved cases in the True Crime Newsletter.

“Our detective was very clear that he portrayed himself as a 14-year-old girl,” Lamb says.

He says the undercover investigator was “going back and forth” with Waggoner for six days.

After Waggoner was arrested, Lamb says he allegedly “admitted to having the profile and the communication with the investigator.”

Lamb says the sheriff’s office has reached out to law enforcement in Texas, where Waggoner previously worked, on the suspicion that there may be a history of wrongdoing. Their investigation is ongoing.

Sally Marks, a spokeswoman for the Apache Junction Unified School District, where Waggoner works, tells PEOPLE he was hired on July 18 and started at the elementary school on Aug. 7. He is now on leave, she says.

“We are very very shocked to hear the news,” she says, noting he “received glowing recommendations from everyone we talked to.”

• PEOPLE’s special edition True Crime Stories: 35 Real Cases That Inspired the Show Law & Order is on sale now.

“We did a background check on him and nothing showed up,” Marks says. “All the standard things we do, fingerprinting, background checks. We also did personal checks. … We are supposed to go back five years and we went back 15. He was very qualified. We were initially thrilled.”

Waggoner had allegedly moved to Arizona to be closer to elderly relatives, Marks says.

News of his arrest has reportedly shocked the school community.

“When I first met him, I thought something was a little strange about him,” Kay Garrett, whose granddaughter goes to the elementary school, told local TV station KNXV. “He seemed nice — but wow.”

Family of Tenn. Teen Elizabeth Thomas Prepares for ‘Highly Emotional’ Trial of Ex-Teacher and Alleged Kidnapper

On July 25, Tad Cummins, the 51-year-old Tennessee man accused of kidnapping his 15-year-old student for 38 days and taking her across the country, will go on trial in federal court.

Cummins is currently behind bars in Nashville, charged with kidnapping and sex crimes in the alleged abduction of Elizabeth Thomas, then a freshman at Culleoka Unit School in Maury County. Meanwhile, Elizabeth’s father says the family is still coming to terms with the “horrific experience” he allegedly put them and their loved one through.

“It’s a highly emotional issue,” Anthony Thomas tells PEOPLE. “ is going to be very difficult for everybody.”

Both authorities and Elizabeth’s family allege Cummins “groomed” Elizabeth for months before the alleged abduction. Shortly after the pair was reported missing, becoming the subject of an ongoing AMBER Alert, Cummins was fired from his teaching job after having previously been suspended for allegedly kissing Elizabeth on school grounds.

It is unclear at this time whether Elizabeth will testify, but the family plans on attending the trial to show their support for her.

“We’ve spoken many times as a family,” Anthony says. “ is just something we’re going to have to go through.”

When she returned home after being missing for more than a month, Elizabeth was taken to an undisclosed location to work with psychologists and counselors. While she was not physically harmed, she had allegedly undergone a series of traumatic events, authorities said.

Thomas would not disclose how Elizabeth is currently doing but he said that with the family’s support and help of counselors, she is making progress.

“We are doing fine,” Thomas says. “It’s just a process you have to go through. being very supportive.”

• Want to keep up with the latest crime coverage? Click here to get breaking crime news, ongoing trial coverage and details of intriguing unsolved cases in the True Crime Newsletter.

On April 20, 38 days after she went missing, Elizabeth was recovered safely in Northern California where investigators say she had been staying in a remote cabin with her accused abductor. Cummins was arrested and later extradited back to Tennessee, where he awaits trial.

If convicted, Cummins faces a minimum of 10 years to life in prison.

PEOPLE’s calls to Cummins’ public defender, Dumaka Shabazz, were not returned.

He also faces charges in California for alleged kidnapping and possession of stolen property.

Cummins’ public defender in California, Benjamin Galloway, issued a statement defending his client, claiming he has “no history of violence and no criminal history whatsoever,” and that he didn’t coerce, force or threaten Elizabeth, Cummins’ former student at the Culleoka Unit School in Maury County, Tennessee.

The Thomas family attorney, Jason Whatley has said any suggestion that Elizabeth might have gone willingly is “amazingly absurd.”

“This is classic grooming and manipulation,” he adds. “And I predict this case will be studied years in the future about how authority figures like Tad Cummins can mess up young children who believe their lies and are manipulated into doing things they would never do.”

Teen Vogue Is Evolving Thanks To Elaine Welteroth

You may have noticed that Teen Vogue is getting political. At first, this may seem surprising. But to those who have been following the changes at the magazine, it was inevitable. Teen Vogue was recently taken over by a new editor-in-chief committed to making the publication more inclusive and aware of the world we live in. The new E.I.C, Elaine Welteroth, has created an editorial vision that’s expanded and prioritized its coverage of politics, feminism, identity, and activism as it relates to Teen Vogue’s audience.

This has caused a huge shift for the publication. Teen Vogue’s website has increased by 6.5 million unique visitors since last year when the magazine’s leadership pivoted. Welteroth is just the second person of color at a Conde Nasté subsidiary to hold a E.I.C position, and has more than risen to the challenge.

Diversity is a key component of her editorial strategy. Young readers are hungry for content that reflects a broad range of experiences, which is something Welteroth undoubtedly built upon from her time on Teen Vogue’s YouTube page hosting a show called “3 Steps To.

The new E.I.C may be the youngest in Conde Nasté’s history, but she’s proven that “serious” topics like religion, business, and politics should not be reserved strictly for older generations.

The Manchester Attack And The Resilience Of Teen Girls

In Manchester on Monday, what should have been a joyful evening of music and dancing at Ariana Grande’s “Dangerous Woman” concert turned into horrific tragedy. Just as fans were filing out of the arena, many with pink balloons in hand, a young man standing in the ticket area detonated a bomb.

The terror attack claimed at least 22 lives, and left nearly 60 injured. It was the deadliest attack in the U.K. since 2005.

We don’t yet know what the proclaimed motivations of the attacker who terrorized Manchester Arena were ― the 22-year-old man who carried out the attack died in the blast ― but what we do know is that the majority of Ariana Grande’s fans are young women and girls. By all reports, the arena was filled with children, mothers and daughters, teen and tween girls who had traveled to the show in pairs or packs.

Teen girls learn how to express passion and love with abandon in a world that largely devalues, objectifies and mocks them.

Pop concerts like Grande’s provide a space where fandoms thrive. And Grande’s fandom, known affectionately as Arianators, is comprised largely of teen girls and LGBTQ youth. (“SO EXCITED TO SEE U TOMORROW,” 18-year-old Georgina Callendar, the Manchester bombing’s first-identified victim, tweeted at Grande on Sunday.) One can surmise that Monday’s concert-goers, ranging in age by decades, many wearing their idol’s signature cat ears and high pony, went out for a night into a space they believed would bring them (or their children) joy and a chance for unencumbered self-expression. For a few hours, the fans in attendance could sing along, losing themselves in the music and soaking up a bit of Grande’s subtle, transgressive sexuality.

Any terror attack flips the switch from assumed safety to fear, from light to darkness, evoking mourning from around the world. But there is something especially hideous about the targeting, whether intentional or not, of young people ― especially young people leaving a space that was supposed to belong to them, at least for a night.

As the New York Times’ Ceylan Yeginsu, Rory Smith and Stephen Castle wrote of the attack:

The violence is intended to stoke fear and to deliver a message. And it was the message of the Manchester blast that was so chilling: the slaughter of teenagers, the anxiety of parents who had been waiting to take their children home, the frantic search for loved ones amid chaos and sirens.

Teen girls are magical beings. I don’t consider this a political statement, more a statement of fact. And, no, Twitter trolls, this does not mean I believe teens are physically immune to the ravages of a terror attack. It means that teen girls learn how to express passion and love with abandon in a world that largely devalues, objectifies and mocks them. It was depressing but unsurprising that in the hours just after the Manchester bombing, at least one male journalist found it an appropriate moment to show disdain for Grande’s music and her largely girlish fan base on Twitter. (The tweets have since been deleted.)

Teen girls can find joy in drugstore glitter, as well as deeply intimate friendship. They can be smart as hell. They can read up about politics and racial inequality and gender-based violence with just as much enthusiasm as they do about their favorite bands and YouTube stars. And, as Harry Styles articulated in a widely-shared Rolling Stone interview last month, when they find meaning in a musician and their songs, they show up for that artist, again and again and again: “Teenage-girl fans ― they don’t lie. If they like you, they’re there.” That artist becomes the recipient of their unbound love.

You see this same love manifesting between teen girls (and boys and adults of all genders) in the wake of the Manchester bombing. In the hours following the attack, there was an outpouring of collective grief and support for victims, their loved ones and Grande herself ― both online and from within Manchester.

Members of other fandoms, from Justin Bieber’s Beliebers to Demi Lovato’s Lovatics to One Direction’s Directioners, each community named after their chosen idol, vowed they’d be there for Arianators.

Twitter, which sometimes feels like nothing more than a cruel cesspool, showed up for Georgina Callendar’s best friend Sophie after she posted a beautiful remembrance of her on Twitter.

“To my beautiful best friend I hope you rest in peace my darling. I love you so much and will always miss you,” she tweeted.

The messages began pouring in.

“I’m so sorry for your loss. I do not know you but I am sending you all my thoughts and endless amounts of my love,” one young woman wrote

“i know saying sorry won’t help but i really am. u have so many people that are here for u in this time,” tweeted another

(Strangers tweet their condolences to Callendar’s BFF, below.)

And in Manchester, the community is rallying, as flowers fill the streets near the arena, and blood banks are overwhelmed with donations.

Teen Vogue writer Lauren Duca received an email from a 23-year-old who lives in Manchester, which she posted on Twitter just after midnight on Tuesday.

“We in this city have not reacted to this terror attack with vitriol; or with fear,” the author of the email wrote. “Our first reaction has been to take to the streets with water, with supplies, to open our homes to those who are stranded and also, sadly, to guide the families who have lost their children through to the centre of a city they don’t know. If you do choose to write about us, please know that [we] reacted with kindness, empathy and love. Not with hate.”

Nothing can fix the senseless violence and loss of life that occurred in Manchester. There is no making it better, and there is no undoing the trauma and violation that those directly touched by the terror attack ― and those impacted by any terror attack around the world ― experienced.

But what we can do is remember that, like the young women who fill concert halls to dance and laugh and bond, choosing unfettered love and joy whenever possible is the only way forward.

Dancing with the Stars’ Rashad Jennings Opens Up About Being Bullied as a ‘Chubby’ Teen with a 0.6 GPA

Rashad Jennings understands firsthand the effects of childhood bullying, and is making it his priority to set a positive example to the next generation of leaders.

The Dancing with the Stars finalist spoke at Bright Star Secondary Charter Academy in Los Angeles on Wednesday morning, where he answered students’ questions and opened up about how he overcame the odds as an overweight, fifth string running back with a 0.6 GPA in high school and advanced to the NFL.

Speaking exclusively with PEOPLE, 32-year-old Jennings reveals that he was bullied as a teen, which is one of the reasons that he now wants to be an uplifting role model to students in the way that he leads his life.

“I was definitely bullied,” Jennings tells PEOPLE. “I was made fun of a lot because I was a 0.6 GPA, chubby kid with glasses and all that good stuff. But I was just goofy enough not to show people how I was feeling inside. That’s why I say you never know what somebody’s dealing with behind their eyes, because I personally just don’t do a good job of showing my struggles unless I tell it. It doesn’t come off my face.”

Jennings, who will compete against Normani Kordei and David Ross next week for the coveted Mirrorball Trophy in the DWTS season 24 finals, recently binge-watched Netflix’s 13 Reasons Why, which opened his eyes up even further to the negative impacts of teasing and bullying.

“There’s so many different metaphors in of how a kid can get to that position and you don’t even realize it — in a matter of a couple months how from home life, maybe no attention or don’t feel comfortable to open up, every kid’s been there,” says Jennings. “It makes you stop and analyze how a couple decisions that you can make and how you speak to somebody could push them right over the limit.”

Thankfully, despite being bullied in his teen years, Jennings says he never contemplated taking his own life “because unlike the show, I did have outlets and people that listened.”

“It just reminded me of why I enjoy talking to kids about the importance of uplifting each other and being wholesome,” Jennings says reflecting on the Netflix series, and adds, “because you don’t know — you never know what somebody’s dealing with in their heart and behind their eyes. We don’t have that ability.”

Although Jennings humbly believes that “there’s nothing special about me, I just always find myself in special positions,” he is using his celebrity and voice for good.

“Kids need to see something worth mimicking. I know that I do too. I personally need to see something worth mimicking to give me encouragement to stand on the things that I believe in and know to be true,” he says about the importance of speaking to students. “To give them a hope that dreams come true, hard work pays off, that you can become anything that you desire, because sometimes you forget that in everyday work. Even adults — we forget that. We quit striving because we’re comfortable and that’s another type of failure to me.”

“For these kids, especially in high school, they are looking for substance,” he continues. “You don’t know if you’re planting a seed in somebody’s life or watering it. I never know which one I’m doing, and so I’m always conscious to do one or the other.”

Dancing with the Stars‘ season 24 finale airs Mondays at 8 p.m. ET and Tuesday at 8:30 p.m. ET on ABC.

The Trans Teen Artist Fighting Discrimination With Wearable Works Of Art

“Adulthood is bullshit,” multi-hyphenate creative Hunter Schafer told Dazed when she was selected as one of the Dazed 100, a list that highlights the next generation of youth culture. “And I think some of the most successful and radiant people are those who have been able to get back to that instinctive and child-like part of their selves again.”

It’s an amusing comment coming from someone who, at 18 years old, has accomplished more than many twice her age. Schafer, who has been drawing since she can remember, is a gifted illustrator and comic artist, tweaking the styles of influences like Tim Burton and Skottie Young to create aqueous ink and watercolor images that combine moody fantasy with teen angst. “My parents were really good about not sitting me down in front of a TV,” Schafer told The Huffington Post. “They really nurtured the creative part of me.”

When Schafer got an Instagram account, she started exploring the potentials of photography. Today, with almost 5,000 followers, she uses the platform to hone her artistic vision and weave visual stories about herself and her community. “I became more aware of an aesthetic that I was interested in and wanted to uphold,” she explained. “I realized that just drawing things wasn’t enough for me; I could convey my voice artistically through other mediums outside of two-dimensional, surface work.”

Influenced by David Bowie, Schafer is a quickly evolving artist driven by experimentation, self-discovery and play. Her works break down binaries of all kinds ― between exterior and interior, personal and political, authentic and artificial, serious and fun.

Schafer is also an activist, specifically advocating for trans youth. Having transitioned at 14 years old, Schafer has actively protested North Carolina’s House Bill 2, which forces transgender individuals to use bathrooms that don’t reflect their gender identity. After the bill passed, Schafer joined a lawsuit filed by the ACLU and began sharing her experiences through art and writing. Though HB2 was technically repealed in March, the compromise passed in its place perpetuates the discriminatory views that propelled the original law, and does nothing to protect trans populations from prejudice or abuse.

As a high school student based in North Carolina, Schafer has firsthand knowledge of the emotional damage and physical danger inflicted upon trans teens when they are denied the basic liberty of using a bathroom. “Every time I use a public bathroom, I have to make a choice,” she wrote for Teen Vogue. “Do I break the law, or do I disregard my comfort and face the risk of harassment and violence?”

Initially, Schafer viewed art and activism as separate parts of her life. But more recently, she’s begun to experiment with the ways creative expression and political resistance can bolster one another. For her high school senior thesis project, Schafer is working on a series of garments aimed to fight discrimination against trans communities, exploring how imagination can wrestle the body away from binary understandings of gender.

One of Schafer’s recent wearable creations is a pair of bulky red underwear with two large hands covering up the wearer’s genitals. Lettering across the unorthodox undergarments reads: “Peel away every perception.” On the item’s backside is a black-and-white line drawing of a wrinkled face, lips pursed in what resembles judgment. The garment speaks to the absurdity of discerning one’s identity with one particular body part we rarely even, if ever, see.

“The piece is dealing with how people perceive me versus how I feel,” Schafer said. “I am encountering new facets of being trans every day. I need to process that through my work. They’re almost like journal entries.”

Another biographical ensemble, titled “Puberty,” is a yellow two-piece featuring felt cutouts of writhing torsos placed atop the wearer’s breasts. The outfit, with its exaggerated, proportions, visualizes the changes a body undergoes during puberty, or gender transition. Awkward, unruly and ultimately beautiful, the outfit visualizes the experience of inhabiting a changing body.

Schafer also communicates her personal experiences through illustrations, like this 2015 series on Rookie, which navigates the difficulty of dressing up for formal events like school dances, where a strict gender binary was especially enforced. “I longed to escape, and to express what I felt inside me — not what was expected of me,” she said in a statement.

So far, Schafer has enjoyed incorporating the spirit of activism into her art. “I want to do something meaningful with my work,” she said. “Being able to translate my experiences as a trans person into my artwork, and using my work as a platform to support marginalized communities in general, those are things that are really important to me now. They’re definitely becoming part of my artistic identity.”

Aside from the many media she’s already successfully dipped into, Schafer is beginning to explore modeling and modern dance as other modes of storytelling. In part, she credits the internet for eliminating rigid boundaries between artistic disciplines and encouraging young artists to create without limitations.

“The internet is changing the young artistic scene because we have such a fast way to share and react and create our own platforms,” Schafer said. “I think the internet has empowered young artists to create these online personas and carry out aesthetics that they want to try out. We can receive direct feedback from other young artists, react to them, and share and spread our ideas. It’s completely youth led and that’s what is so wonderful.”

Schafer is currently finishing up her final year of high school and is planning to take a gap year before college to live and make work in New York City. Her contributions as an artist and activist are wildly impressive, regardless of the fact that Schafer is still a teenager. Thankfully, the young creative force shows no signs of slowing down or growing up anytime soon.

One New Jersey teen has a very tough decision to make — which Ivy League school to attend.

As it came time to apply to colleges, Morris Hills High School senior Ifeoma White-Thorpe decided she’d “shoot shot” and go for the nation’s biggest and most prestigious universities, WABC reports.

One-by-one, the results came in. White-Thorpe had gotten into all eight Ivy League schools.

“It was definitely a surreal experience,” White-Thorpe tells PEOPLE. “I don’t think anyone applies to these type of schools expecting that they’re going to get into one of them.”

Beginning with Harvard College, the 17-year-old was accepted to Yale, Princeton, Dartmouth Cornell, Columbia, Brown and the University of Pennsylvania.

“I remember when I got my Harvard acceptance, how excited and thrilled and how humbled I felt by it because I was just like, ‘Wow! Out of the thousands of candidates they get they chose me,’ ” she says.

“I feel like I’m still in a daze now that I think about it I’m like, ‘Wow! Is this really me?’ ”

As if choosing between the eight schools weren’t difficult enough, White-Thorpe was also accepted to Stanford University.

“At this time, there is no school that I particularly favor over the other,” she says. “I like all of the schools equally. Moving forward, I’m going to go to all of the accepted students days and feel it out.”

FROM COINAGE: 5 Financial Mistakes to Avoid in Your 20s

The teen is student government president at the Rockaway high school, according to WABC. She said she hopes to study biology and pursue a career in global health, noting that she wants to continue her research in cardiac arrest and the sickle cell disease trait.

But aside from that, the teen says she’s looking for a great social climate at her school of choice.

“I’m really looking for a strong community,” she tells PEOPLE. “A strong support system.”

While White-Thorpe was surprised at the good news, the teen’s mother said she expected nothing less from her determined daughter.

“She has always been a hardworking girl,” Pat White-Thorpe told ABC News.

“As a little girl, she was a great writer. I remember when she was in kindergarten. She spoke on behalf of the kindergarten class and it blew our minds away.”

Awesome Teen Made Her Sister A Shirt That Exposes The Sexism Of Dress Codes

When 13-year-old Grace Villegas wore a long-sleeve, off-the-shoulder shirt to school this week, she didn’t expect her teachers to comment on it. But that’s exactly what happened.

Villegas told Yahoo Style that her Charlotte Russe shirt led teachers at her Kansas middle school to give her “looks that made me uncomfortable in my own skin.” The teen also said that several teachers made comments about the amount of skin she was exposing.

According to her older sister, Isabella, 18, one teacher told Grace that “she was revealing too much chest and shoulders,” and another told her, “You’re just making bad decisions today, Grace.” Isabella told The Huffington Post that Grace eventually changed outfits due to the shame she felt.

When the teen got home and told her older sister what had happened, Isabella was angry. So she decided to channel that frustration into a statement-making T-shirt.

I wanted girls to know that they don’t have to stay quiet.
Isabella Villegas, 18

The shirt Isabella made outlines her issues with school dress codes and the way they are enforced ― specifically when it comes to young women. The tee reads:

DRESS CODE:

-promotes the objectification & sexualization of young bodies

-blames the wearer for the onlooker’s perceptions/actions

-perpetuates rape culture

-is BS

Later that evening, she tweeted about it:

The tweet gained significant traction. As of Friday, it has nearly 1,200 retweets and 3,000 likes. And hundreds of people have tweeted back at Isabella.

The 18-year-old told HuffPost that while she doesn’t think dress codes should be completely abolished, they shouldn’t exist as tools of shame.

“Young girls should not be shamed for showing their shoulders and other non-sexual parts of their body for non-sexual reasons,” she said. “[Grace] went in feeling confident, and left feeling like her teachers no longer view her as the good student she is. I wanted girls to know that they don’t have to stay quiet.”

Teen Plans To Tell The Immigrant Stories Trump’s Administration Never Would

When Valeria Alvarado learned that President Donald Trump had called for a weekly list of crimes committed by undocumented immigrants, she took action.

The 19-year-old Villanova University student decided to create an organization that would fight Trump’s actions by highlighting positive immigrant stories. Alvarado recently started the Facebook page “We, Too, Are America,” a name she acknowledges has also been used by other pro-immigrant movements on Twitter and to celebrate Black History Month.

“When I read [Trump’s executive] order, I knew it would unfairly define a community of over 11 million people by the actions of a few,” Alvarado told The Huffington Post on Thursday. “Being close to the community, I decided to do a counter-list where we would publish a weekly list of accomplishments by the undocumented community.”

The positive response she received over the initial idea prompted her to open up the platform to not only include stories about undocumented immigrants but also feature achievements by refugees and the immigrant community as a whole. The student says these groups are also negatively affected by Trump’s recent directives.

Alvarado is an immigrant herself; she moved from Monterrey, Mexico to the United States at the age 4. The teen is currently spending a semester abroad in Rwanda studying post-genocide restoration.

“I could not believe my eyes when I first read Trump’s plan to publish this list,” Alvardo told Remezcla in a recent interview. “This ‘crime list’ idea is not new. The Nazis used to publish a list of Jewish crimes before the genocide started. The RTML radio in Rwanda used to convince people that Tutsis were to blame for the crimes of the few. I am not trying to homogenize these situations with each other, but it is unbelievable that we are repeating history’s same mistakes.”

Alvarado, who is a U.S. citizen, recognizes that not all immigrants have the opportunity to become legal.

“I was lucky enough to become a citizen in 2013,” she told HuffPost. “I use the word ‘luck’ because I believe the citizenship process requires more than just hard work, it requires luck. There are so many in our community still stuck in the process, after years and years of working hard towards becoming a citizen.”

The “We, Too, Are America” Facebook page has accrued more than 1,000 followers in its first six days. Alvarado and her small team plan to publish their first weekly list of immigrant stories on Monday, Feb. 6.

“We, Too, Are America wants to publish stories from all walks of life and all professions,” she said. “Our goal is not to build the ‘model minority’ image, but instead, counter a false image with a positive and more diverse image of our community.”

The 2016 election was the first time Alvarado had the opportunity to vote for a presidential candidate, a privilege she took seriously. While the outcome was not what she expected, she intends to keep fighting for her ideals.

“Voting for the first time was a bittersweet moment,” she told HuffPost. “I was happy I was able to go in the voting booth to exercise my rights. I also had to think about the privilege I have as a citizen; our undocumented friends and family did not have an opportunity to vote in an election that would alter their lives. The three million more Americans and I that won the popular vote are disappointed in the outcome, pero como siempre me ha dicho mi papa: ‘es tiempo para ponerte las pilas’ (which translates to, ‘but like my dad always told me: ‘it’s time to get to work’’). A Trump presidency will not bring us down. We will not stand by silently.”

Lots of Beautiful Hair at Teen Choice, Some With Splash of Color

Teen Choice delivered! Rita Ora added a light breeze of pink to her signature platinum blonde tresses and Britney Spears, honored as a style icon, splashed her ends with blue and purple to create what might even be described as an ombre.

All the stars collecting awards in Los Angeles for best movies, acting and music were, of course, beautiful. Most of them stuck with recent trends of natural looking cuts and colors with subtle, soft color transitions. We didn’t really see any big departures from what’s been popular.

Winning an award as a TV comedy actress, “Glee” star Lea Michele stayed with her long layers and caramel highlights. What can you say? It works!

Teen Choice for best TV drama went to the cast of “Pretty Little Liars.” Accepting the award were cast stars including Lucy Hale, who does a lot of long brown layered wavy hair, recently went short with a bob, but then had extensions to do a long ponytail in a cool, slick-back look to accept her award with other cast members. Also going with a center part and slick-back look from the “Pretty Little Liars” cast were Janel Parrish and Shay Mitchell.

Actress and singer Zendaya (star of Disney’s “Undercover KC”) went with a ballerina bun high on top to walk the Teen Choice blue carpet. She changes the style of her dark, brown hair often, and the results are nearly always fantastic.

So, no new trends emerged but we saw lots of beautiful hair. Love those kids! Love change!

Teen Who Was Told She Would Never Speak Is Now A Talented Singer

This young woman has something to sing about.

Born with a birth defect, Amber Simone Chinn was not expected to breathe, much less speak, on her own. But now, the 19-year-old is a powerful singer, and a video of her performing has gone viral, WGRZ reported.

Chinn was born with craniosynostosis — a defect in which the joints between the skull bones close prematurely — which led to a procedure at the age of 6 months, from which she was not expected to fully recover, the news outlet reported. Chinn’s parents were told she would never talk, but she beat the odds, calling her recovery a miracle.

At a friend’s graduation party earlier this month, Chinn was caught on camera singing by the pool. The video of her performing “The Worst,” by Jhene Akio, was uploaded to Facebook and has received over 2 million views as of Tuesday.

“It’s hard to grasp,” Chinn told WGRZ. “I have confidence, but I never thought me sitting by the pool, a random video would be so viral.”

Now, the young musician is a student at SUNY Buffalo State and is working with local music producers on an original song. On her GoFundMe page to create a music label, Chinn cites her performance of “The Worst” as a “music video about women empowerment and the need to confront and walk away from domestic abuse.”

Last December, another young woman shared a small musical moment to address a larger issue. Single mom Kimberly Henson uploaded a video of herself singing Sam Smith’s version of Whitney Houston’s “How Will I Know” to her baby daughter. Overnight, she reached more than 20 million people on Facebook alone, WLTX reported. In January, she released an original song called “Tiny Hearts” to share her experiences as a single parent.

“I may have taken a different path and missed little things here and there,” Henson told The Huffington Post. “But coming home and being a little person’s superhero means a lot of more in the end.”

Teen Dupes New York Times Into Reporting That Dylann Roof Was A Brony

Amid the whirlwind that is a national breaking news story, one British teen wanted to see whether a major newspaper would publish utter lies.

Benjamin Wareing, 16, told a Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter with The New York Times that he knew Dylann Roof, the suspected shooter in the killing of nine people in a Charleston church last week. He told the Times that Roof’s racist manifesto that surfaced online was eerily similar to a Tumblr page Roof posted on, and noted that the alleged murderer is a fan of “My Little Pony.”

But as Fusion points out, Wareing made it all up. He never knew Roof, never saw a Tumblr page — and never provided proof of its existence to the Times — and certainly didn’t know whether Roof was a Brony.

Wareing had tricked The Gray Lady’s Frances Robles into reporting this:

Benjamin Wareing, a blogger in Britain, said the writings are nearly identical to blog posts that Mr. Roof posted several months ago on a separate Tumblr page. Mr. Wareing was preparing to write an essay on the dangers of Tumblr and troubled youths, so he took notes on the writings.

“He just made really stupid but obvious statements about people from other races,” Mr. Wareing said in an email. “He would call black citizens ‘nuggets’ and such. He never made direct threats at all on Tumblr, at least it didn’t seem like that, just weird ramblings about how he felt he ‘didn’t fit in.’”

Among his writings were images of 9/11 “memes” and of “My Little Pony,” Mr. Wareing said.

The paragraphs were only available for a few hours, and Robles was working furiously to update the story during a time when every news outlet was trying to get exclusive information. Fusion reports that she updated her story more than a dozen times in 12 hours. But Wareing’s trick shows just how hungry publications are, and how quickly reporters — and their editors — will grab at sexy information and overlook the verification process.

Wareing said on his own blog that a friend of his in South Carolina — who was a “friend” of Roof’s on Facebook but didn’t know the suspect — was getting hassled by reporters on social media who were eager for a scoop. So Wareing gave the Times’ Robles some juicy information: the Tumblr anecdote, which was republished by several other news outlets.

“I told her that Dylann Roof had some ‘elusive’ and mysterious Tumblr page in which he posted his deepest thoughts,” Wareing wrote. “Without providing any screenshots or ANY proof of its existence other than my own word, the reporter published it as fact. Oops.”

Wareing also published email correspondence he had with Robles to back up his claims.

Wareing told The Huffington Post that no Times fact-checkers reached out before or after Robles’ story was published. He said her final message to him said, “A few readers are telling me you were a hoax…”

“People could think that this was a joke or a lark, but it wasn’t,” Wareing told Fusion, noting that he wanted to be a reporter some day. “Our ultimate goal of this was to see if a reporter would publish something that was completely untrue.”

The Times story has since been corrected and the following note attached:

Editors’ Note: June 22, 2015
An earlier version of this article included a reference to a British blogger who claimed that Dylann Roof’s manifesto was similar to earlier blog entries Mr. Roof had written. That passage was removed from the article after questions were raised about the blogger and his claims. Subsequently, the blogger said in a post online that he had fabricated the information about Mr. Roof’s supposed earlier blog entries.

The New York Times declined to comment further.

‘Teen Mom’ Star Maci Bookout Gives Birth To A Baby Girl

She may not be a teen anymore, but she’s still a proud mom.

“Teen Mom” star Maci Bookout announced over Twitter on Friday that she had given birth to her second child, a baby girl named Jayde:

Bookout had previously said she was anxious about the birth, not knowing how she would feel about having another child. But based on the tweet, it seems everything is going fine.

As for her son, Bentley, Bookout told People magazine in March that the 6-year-old was “so excited for the baby.” You can probably see that excitement in a recent photo of Bookout with Bentley and boyfriend Taylor McKinney:

Jayde and I are the luckiest girls in the world thanks to these two wonderful men! @tmon3yyy Amazing shot by @brittanyphotographs

Dan Williams, Oklahoma Teen, Surprises All 1,076 Girls At His School With Valentine’s Day Gifts

Wanting every girl at his high school to feel loved on Valentine’s Day, one big-hearted Oklahoma teen decided to surprise all of them with cards and candy this year — a total of 1,076 girls.

According to KFOR, Dan Williams, a student at Edmond High School in Edmond, Oklahoma, had to work all summer to raise enough money for the surprise gifts. “To know that someone cares about them, that’s the best feeling in the world I think,” he told the news outlet.

(Story continues below)

Though Williams intended the gifts to be anonymous, he was reportedly unable to keep his identity a secret for long.

He’s since won the praise of his classmates — and the school itself.

On Valentine’s Day, Edmond High School, whose mascot is a bulldog, honored the young man with this tweet:

Dan Williams: You’re a champ.

No, The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show Isn’t Bad for Teen Girls

“Wait, you WATCH that?”

Last night was the 2014 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show in London, where 47 models, including the famed Victoria’s Secret Angels, strutted the runway in a immense spread of fairytale undergarments. They’ve done it every year for nearly 20 years (I’ve been watching since I was 12), and every year, that runway goes right into a pile of people who don’t like it and don’t think I, a teenage girl, should either.

When I look at the Victoria’s Secret Angels, I see gorgeous, happy women, who work for a company that sticks with many of them for the long haul — a rarity in this industry. Sure, they’re thin, but they’re not fragile — they’re toned. I mean, legs like that don’t come from eating carrot sticks and water. They look like they really enjoy what they do. I mean, who wouldn’t? I’d like to try and frown when I’m strapped into that much sparkling wing acreage. Watching the show is a glimpse into their world. You get these little moments that are usually confined to the pages of a catalogue or a six-foot poster in your mall. Taylor Swift sings a song that perfectly describes your life in the background, and Hozier smizes at you (and everyone else watching, but it was a special moment). It’s a fun fantasy. That’s why it bothers me so much when people use it as a negative factor in the body image conversation, especially targeted at teenage girls.

I’m a 17-year-old girl. A lot of people would tell you that puts me in the prime “issues with her body” range. I shouldn’t be inspired by these charismatic and successful women and their amazing careers in an industry they love. Because I enjoy the show, I’m obviously some sort of bimbo who doesn’t understand that I’m being negatively influenced, and that everything they do is fake and that they’re just famous for looking good in underwear. I shouldn’t appreciate the hard work it takes to do what they do and attempt to emulate that work ethic. I most certainly should not feel serious confidence and girl power after watching them do their thing for an hour in beautiful underwear. I should probably be looking at them and comparing my ankles to theirs, and be trying to stretch my spine three inches, and destroying myself in a gym attempting to recreate their abs. I should feel incomplete, like I am not measuring up. My self-confidence should be shattered every time Karlie’s faces beams at me while I sit on my couch eating kettle corn. I shouldn’t feel content with my body and the way I am, because I don’t look like these Angels. Or at least, that’s what the media is telling me and other girls (and boys) my age and beyond. If they’re telling you that too, let me give you a piece of advice: ignore it. I say this thing a lot because it applies to a lot of things, including loving the Victoria’s Secret Angels: If you love it, own it. Taylor Swift agrees with me on this. (Probably.)

Strangers Rally Together To Rescue Teen Driver Trapped In Flipped-Over SUV In River

These teens are lucky to be alive.

Three young men, ages 16 and 17, were in an SUV, speeding down a highway in Salt Lake City last Thursday, according to Fox13. In an attempt to avoid cars that were stopped at a traffic light, the driver swerved around the other vehicles and crashed into the Jordan River, with the truck landing on its roof, Deseret News reported.

“I saw it. The vehicle exploded in front of me right there, just pieces and parts. It’s like nothing you would see in your entire life,” witness Brian Adams told Fox13 of the wreck.

Strangers then jumped into the river, flipped the SUV over and helped save the teens.

We have three teenage boys that went to the hospital. It would have been entirely different if those people hadn’t been here,” Lt. Brian Burvis of the Salt Lake City Police Department told ABC4.

When the truck crashed, a couple ran to the river and fished the passengers out, according to the outlet. More people started piling in the water to help save the teen driver, who was stuck behind the steering wheel, and had been underwater for a few minutes, KUTV reported.

The bystanders were able to turn the truck over to its upright position to get the driver above water, while the fire department was able to remove the teen from the vehicle, the outlet reported.

Ten people jumped down into the water. Just bystanders that saw it happen, just flipped it over so that he wouldn’t die,” Adams told ABC4 of the effort to save the driver.

The three teens were brought to the hospital and are expected to make a full recovery, thanks, in part, to the strangers’ teamwork.

It was just very, very lucky,” Burvis told Deseret News.

Teen Cosplayer Sexually Assaulted And Beaten Near Comic-Con, Police Say

A teen cosplayer who had been attending Comic-Con in San Diego was attacked, sexually assaulted and left bloody and unconscious on the side of a road early Sunday, according to reports.

Police said late Tuesday that they had arrested a 29-year-old man at the nearby Marriott Marquis San Diego Marina, and charged him with sexual contact with a minor and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

The suspect has not been identified.

“The victim, a juvenile female, was transported to a hospital for evaluation and treatment,” the Port of San Diego Harbor Police said in a statement posted on G33K-HQ. “This investigation is ongoing.”

Earlier in the day, the victim’s parents posted a plea for information that was widely circulated on Facebook and Twitter as well as in fan forums and blogs.

The victim, who had been dressed in a creative take on a Roger Rabbit costume, was out with friends on Saturday night but left them after a disagreement, Raw Story reported.

Messages from family and friends posted on social media indicate the victim is currently in the ICU and may be suffering from bleeding in the brain. However, a more recent post on Facebook says “each day she is getting better.”

The Huffington Post is not linking to these posts so as to avoid revealing the identity of the victim.

It’s not yet clear whether the suspect attended Comic-Con, although the hotel where he was arrested is the event’s official headquarters and as a result is popular among attendees.

The assault has led to renewed calls in the cosplay community for a strict and more formal anti-harassment policy at the annual comic book and movie convention. Earlier this week, the group Geeks for CONsent presented a petition calling for a new policy, saying some women — especially those who attend in costume — report being being groped, harassed and insulted.

This Tribute To Late Teen YouTube Star Zach Sobiech Is Guaranteed To Make You Cry

Some people continue to inspire, even after they’ve left us.

That can be said for Zach Sobiech, the 18-year-old singer and songwriter whose YouTube hit, “Clouds,” went viral last December and, at one point, reached No. 1 on iTunes.

Sobiech lost his battle to a rare form of cancer this past May, but his legacy has continued to touch the hearts of people across the globe.

On Thursday night, a choir of about 5,000 singers came together to sing a triumphant version of “Clouds” at the Mall of America in Bloomington, Minn. The event, held one year after “Clouds” hit YouTube, was organized by local radio station, KS95.

In the crowd were Sobiech’s parents, Laura and Rob Sobiech, and his girlfriend, Amy Adamle.

Everybody came together, and it was for Zach, and it was for everyone in the room,” Rob Sobiech told the Pioneer Press. “And it was for other kids who have cancer.”

“I know [Zach is] smiling right now,” Adamle added, “just like all of us are.”

Watch the incredible performance of “Clouds” in the video above.
