Nicole Miller Tells Staff to Ditch the Plastics in the Office

NICOLE MILLER CLEANS HOUSE: In an effort to do her part to reduce plastic refuse, the New York designer has lowered the boom in-house on staffers to do a better job of recycling. She first made her case in the company’s internal newsletter about four weeks ago. By using refillable cups instead of throwaways, the 80-person company has reduced plastic trash by 100 percent in that time, Miller said.
But the designer is not new to recycling, having made various efforts through the years. Hangers and plastic bags are among the necessities that are used again and again. Filtered water was offered to the company’s 80 staffers years ago. Miller said, “I was very frustrated by the huge pile of plastic cups in the recycle bin every night. I got on everyone’s case about bringing their own coffee cups and cold drink cups. And the more I got into it the more issues there were.”
Miller has also used the newsletter to remind employees about using a refillable water bottle at the gym and having mesh bags at the ready for grocery store and other shopping. The Seventh Avenue office is eliminating plastic cups and bowls in favor of paper or glass

Josie Natori Receives Honorary Degree From Manhattanville College, Tells Graduates to Embrace Change

AFTER SCHOOL WITH JOSIE: As the keynote speaker at this year’s undergraduate commencement at her alma mater Manhattanville College, Josie Natori was in for a few surprises.
Saturday’s stormy weather in New York caused the commencement to be moved indoors to the campus’ chapel where Natori had graduated 50 years ago. That morning-of change of plans was something she only learned about upon her arrival and the new location made the occasion even more memorable. “For me, selfishly, it was very nostalgic,” she said Monday.
Another surprise was the honorary degree that Manhattanville bestowed on the founder and chief executive officer of The Natori Company. “Of course, I burst into tears,” she said. Her former dean Elizabeth McCormack, who became president of the school in 1966, was in the crowd, as were Natori’s husband Ken and her son Kenneth. In her remarks, the designer said, “Change is the only constant — and right now, it happens in the blink of an eye. Embrace change or be left behind.”

Kumail Nanjiani Tells Grads To ‘Have Sex With An Immigrant’

Immigrants may feel a little tense about what’s happening in American these days, but comedian Kumail Nanjiani has a plan to make things feel a little more relaxing for everyone.

“Have sex with an immigrant,” Nanjiani told the graduates of Grinnell College in Iowa during a commencement speech. “We’re going through a tough time right now, and it would just be really great for morale.”

Nanjiani graduated from the liberal arts school in 2001. Grinnell invited him back this week to deliver the commencement address to the graduating class of 2017. During the ceremony, the school awarded Nanjiani an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters.

The star of HBO’s “Silicon Valley” opened up to the graduates about his experience moving from Pakistan to Iowa for college and how it shaped the way he moved through the world.

“When I came to Grinnell I was a devout Muslim who had never romantically touched a girl and I was going to get a degree that guaranteed me a job,” Nanjiani said. “By the time I graduated I was basically a Rastafarian with a white American girlfriend and a philosophy degree. College changes you, is my point.”

He also offered advice on how to take on bigotry, even if it is uncomfortable.

“We cannot expect others to understand our point of view if we don’t understand theirs,” he said. “It’s uncomfortable and awkward and infuriating and it hurts your brain, but with that pain can come growth and real change.”

“Being a fish out of water is tough, but that’s how you evolve,” he added. “I think that’s scientifically accurate — I don’t know, I had a liberal arts education.”

Nanjiani advised the graduates to live with intention and not fear failure ― unless, he joked, you’re the person who created the exploding Samsung Galaxy phones.

“I never thought big picture,” Nanjiani said. “That would have overwhelming. So what I’m saying is, you can go slow. Allow your dreams and goals to change, but live an intentional life.”

He continued: “Here’s the big secret I’ve learned in the last few years: Nobody knows what they’re doing … Everybody’s winging it out there. Some people are just better at pretending to be confident because nobody’s done ― nobody’s cooked.”

Watch Nanjiani’s full commencement speech below.

Homeland Security Chief Tells Trump He Can Use Saber ‘On The Press’

After President Donald Trump received a ceremonial saber at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy Wednesday, Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly could be heard on an open microphone telling him, “You can use that on the press.”

“Yeah,” Trump replied with a chuckle as Kelly smiled at the commencement ceremony in New London, Connecticut.

The exchange occurred after Trump delivered the commencement speech to new graduates, remarks in which he complained about how he’s being covered by journalists.

“Look at the way I’ve been treated lately, especially by the media,” Trump told the crowd. “No politician in history, and I say this with great surety, has been treated worse or more unfairly.”

The Trump administration has been embroiled in controversy over its ties to Russian officials, with the furor intensifying after reports this week he urged then-FBI Director James Comey in February to drop the agency’s probe into the matter. Comey was fired by Trump last week, one of the move that has prompted impeachment talks.

The White House has denied that Trump pressured Comey.

Kelly, a former U.S. Marine general, introduced Trump at the ceremony. He urged graduates to “tell the truth … even though it’s uncomfortable’’ and others “may not want to hear it.”

Tone-Deaf Jewelry Ad Tells Customers To ‘Throw Rocks At Girls’

A jewelry store in Asheville, North Carolina has apologized for its tone-deaf billboard ad that caused outrage on the internet.

The billboard in question comes from Spicer Greene Jewelers and is currently located near Interstate 240. It reads: “Sometimes, It’s ok to throw rocks at girls…,” surrounded by photos of brightly colored jewels, aka “rocks.”

The company issued an apology on Facebook Thursday after the ad sparked a negative reaction on Twitter and in the media

Eva-Michelle Spicer, the co-owner of Spicer Greene Jewelers, told The Huffington Post via email that the billboard will come down as soon as they can replace it with their next campaign (which is usually around every four weeks, according to Asheville paper, The Citizen Times ). When HuffPost asked who came up with the statement, Spicer said, “It’s a common phrase in the jewelry industry. We did not invent it.”

The majority of responses to Spicer Greene’s Facebook apology implied they many thought the ad was funny and that critics of it were being too sensitive.

“BRILLIANT AD…No apology required,” one commenter wrote, while another added, “These people are idiots and will probably never have any shiny rocks thrown at them! The billboard is funny! Get a sense of humor, life will be much better!”

One woman complained about the “snowflakes that whine over everything,” and told the company, “I hope you make a 500% increase in sales.”

Many of the Twitter responses to the company’s apologies also maintained the billboard was “hilarious:”

Others, like Chelsea Clinton, found the ad incredibly offensive and pointed out that joking about violence against women is “never funny.” Especially in a world where women are still stoned to death

“The billboard was intent to be a nostalgic thought of a childhood teaching,” Spicer told ABC News 13 WLOS. “That it’s not ok to throw rocks at girls, it’s not ok to throw rocks at anyone… It saddens me that it was taken that way, because it certainly wasn’t intended.”

Burnt-Out Art Student Tells Off Professor With Message Hiding In Plain Sight

A college student has turned the act of telling someone off into an art form.

Lama Ali, who attends school in Virginia, had three final assignments due on the same day for her fashion drawing class. Exhausted after working on one painting for seven hours straight, the 20-year-old decided to include a message in American Sign Language to her professor:

“You got me fucked up,” a bunch of hands in the painting spell out in ASL, interwoven among the female figures.

“Honestly the idea just came to me while I was finishing up the piece,” Ali told The Huffington Post. “I was looking at it and thought, ‘This could really use something else.’ And then the idea struck me: Why not secretly express how I was feeling while struggling at the library at 4 a.m.?”

Ali, who does not know ASL, told HuffPost she taught herself a little bit just for this particular assignment.

“You know it’s bad when you have to learn a whole other language to express how done you are,” she said.

Once the fashion design major had finished her masterpiece, she posted it to Twitter on Dec. 7, where it has received over 113,000 likes and 48,000 retweets. And people really love her unbridled level of full-on pettiness.

“As petty as the idea was, I was actually really excited to make this piece,” Ali said. “Because I really felt like I was making something that showed my creativity and emotion rather than just completing the assignment.”

But, pettiness aside, most people straight up love it:

Ali said that she decided to use sign language because she wanted the message to be there, but not be immediately clear. She also wanted to practice drawing hands, so ASL seemed like a great way of marrying both those ideas.

“I remembered seeing a post on Tumblr long ago with a similar phrase in sign, and I thought the letters would look cool with the figures on the painting.”

Inspired by the post, she decided to look up the letters in ASL to spell out the message. Someone on Twitter even did the good work of circling them in the painting:

Ali told HuffPost that when she finally presented the piece to her professor in her class, he absolutely loved it.

“Most of my friends in class actually knew about the secret message, so I was really surprised when no one laughed or blew my cover during critique.”

She also admits that her professor still doesn’t know about the message, despite her post getting so much attention.

“The last time I checked, he still had no clue,” she said.

Sean Hannity Tells His Radio Audience He Really Hopes Trump Isn’t A ‘One Term Führer’

Like satire? Find it every day on The Political Garbage Chute.

NEW YORK, NEW YORK — On his radio show this week Sean Hannity, conservative firebrand and loyal Donald Trump supporter, had a slip of the tongue while discussing what he believed would happen during the first of the alleged billionaire’s presidential terms. While ranting to his audience about how he believed the “lame-stream media” would treat Trump, Mr. Hannity used a German word that many associate with one of the most ruthless, murderous dictators in human history.

2016-11-22-1479848645-2444203-Sean_Hannity_by_Gage_Skidmore.jpg

“I just know those loony liberals will be after our dear president from the start,” Hannity opined, “and I just do not want them turning him into a one term führer.”

Hannity was apparently unaware he’d used the word “führer,” a term that has become most synonymous with German dictator and winner of the 1938 prize for Most Mangled Penis, Adolf Hitler. Mr. Hannity continued his rant through to the commercial break. When he returned to the live broadcast, his producers had made him aware of it, and he addressed his use of the word.

“So apparently when I was all hopping mad back there,” Hannity said incredulously, “I may have used a German word for Donald. Obviously I don’t really think of him as a führer. He’s more like president-emperor, know what I mean? He won with the consent of like, 18% of the country’s population, which of course gives him a massive mandate. That mandate will allow him to do pretty much whatever he wants, what with a Republican Congress and whatnot.”

Mr. Hannity told his audience that it would be “absolutely disastrous” for the American people if Trump was limited to one term.

“How does anyone expect any of his final solutions to our problems to work,” Hannity asked, “if we don’t repeal the 22nd Amendment and give him as many terms as he wants until his arteries finally give out on him and he dies in a heap of orange diarrhea?”

As the show progressed, Hannity kept coming back to his slip of the tongue, and each time he found more reasons to excuse it. Ultimately, he decided that since there wasn’t any direct mention in the word’s definition to the Nazis, that it was “another case of libtards being libtarded about libtarded things.”

“And what’s so wrong about me calling him my führer,” Hannity asked rhetorically, “look up the definition, liberals, it just means ‘a ruthless, tyrannical dictator.’ It doesn’t say anything about having to be a Nazi. Duh.”

Michelle Obama Tells Vogue ‘It’s Time’ To Leave The White House

First Lady Michelle Obama’s days in the White House are numbered, and she’s savoring every last moment as she prepares to say goodbye.

“Looking out on the South Lawn and the Washington Monument and it had just rained and the grass was really green and everything popped a little bit more,” she told writer Jonathan Van Meter for Vogue’s December cover story. “It’s soooo beautiful. And for that moment I thought, I’m going to miss waking up to this, having access to this anytime I want.”

Yet she’s ready for the next step, she said.

“On the flip side . . . it’s time. I think our democracy has it exactly right: two terms, eight years. It’s enough. Because it’s important to have one foot in reality when you have access to this kind of power. The nature of living in the White House is isolating. And I think Barack and I—because we’re kind of stubborn—we’ve maintained some normalcy, mostly because of the age of our kids. I go out to dinner with my girlfriends; I go to Sasha’s games; Barack has coached a little basketball with Sasha’s team. But at the same time, when you can’t walk into CVS?”

And while she admits that she doesn’t know what that step will be, she vows to continue fighting on behalf of the issues she cares about.

“I will always be engaged in some way in public service and public life,” she said. “I’ve always felt very alive using my gifts and talents to help other people. I sleep better at night. I’m happier.”

Van Meter spent a month by the first lady’s side, accompanying her to various engagements and speaking to her staffers.

He shows just how revolutionary her tenure has been. She took a “job with no salary, a platform with no power” and loaded it with significance and purpose, he wrote.

“Everything we do is by choice,” she said. “I could have spent eight years doing anything, and at some level, it would have been fine. I could have focused on flowers. I could have focused on decor. I could have focused on entertainment. Because any First Lady, rightfully, gets to define her role. There’s no legislative authority; you’re not elected. And that’s a wonderful gift of freedom.”

She is the perfect mix of substance and insouciance, Van Meter argued.

He highlights her accomplishments in the last eight years ― like Reach Higher and Let Girls Learn, two education initiatives ― as well as her impeccable style and penchant for SoulCycle and carpool karaoke with late-night host James Corden.

Particularly remarkable has been her choice to spend so much time learning from young people.

“It makes us want to live right and do right and be right—Every. Single. Day—so that we don’t ever disappoint these kids and they have something to hold on to, and so that they know—as I say all the time—I can do this. You can do this,” she said.

Why the Word SIMPLE Tells Me Absolutely Nothing About What You Want for Your Wedding – A Rant

SIMPLE is probably my least favorite word in the bridal vocabulary. What does it mean when a bride says she wants a SIMPLE wedding? That tells me absolutely nothing. I’m a wedding planner, not a psychic! 2016-04-26-1461699237-4796847-110813_SandyMalonePortraits201640x427.jpg

Just so we’re all clear on this, Merriam-Webster explains the word SIMPLE as having three primary definitions:

Not hard to understand or do
Having few parts, not complex or fancy
Not special or unusual

I have never met a bride or groom who didn’t want their wedding to be “special,” and regardless of what kind of wedding the couple chooses, rarely will it have “few parts” and be “not hard” to do. But even if the true definition of SIMPLE is what the bride and groom want, the word still tells me absolutely nothing about their vision of their wedding day.

To make sure I wasn’t missing something, I dug a little deeper for the extended definition of the word SIMPLE:

Free from guile
Free from vanity
Free from ostentation or display
Of humble origin or modest position
Lacking in knowledge or expertise
Stupid
Not socially or culturally sophisticated

You get my point now, right? SIMPLE is probably the most overused word in weddings, while at the same time, its definition absolutely, positively does not apply to what the bride and groom are describing. A wedding is a “display” of your love, although it doesn’t have to be ostentatious. And nobody wants their wedding to be considered “not socially or culturally sophisticated” even if they’re DIYing every part of it! And let’s not pretend there’s not a little vanity in mind. Otherwise, brides wouldn’t spend so much on wedding gowns, shoes, hair and makeup. Your wedding day is one of the only days you’re allowed to be vain without feeling bad about it!

I believe most couples use the word SIMPLE when they mean easy and low stress – but wedding planners have to figure out what they’re describing. Some couples mean they’re not going to do fancy décor, or invite a lot of people. Telling a wedding planner that you want a SIMPLE wedding doesn’t give them enough information to estimate a budget or give you recommendations. Using a non-descriptive word like SIMPLE when talking about a wedding does a massive disserve to the couple and their vendors.

Some brides and grooms use the word SIMPLE as a synonym for inexpensive, and that’s not usually true. In fact, sometimes the things that look like the simplest choices are actually quite time-consuming and expensive to execute.

There’s a better way to describe what you need and want for your wedding to your vendors, and it involves using a LOT of adjectives.

  • When you start planning your wedding, think about what you really want in terms of details for your big day. Think color, texture, vibe – and write those things down. Do you have a particular theme in mind? Whether it’s a “Frozen” Winter Wonderland, or a tropical island paradise, the theme will dictate some of the colors you use, and style of display.
  • 2016-04-26-1461700105-7226675-JessicaandDavebouquetandflowercrown.jpg

  • Do you want a lot of candlelight? Or elaborate flower arrangements? Or both? How do you picture the lighting – will fairy lights on the tent and in the trees suffice, or do you want to create a more vintage feel with the bulbs of Italian lights strung throughout your event? For a modern wedding, you’ll probably want colorful uplighting, and maybe some designs. Nowadays, you can have pretty much anything you want, as long as you can afford it. The more elaborate you get, the more expensive it will be.
  • Use pictures to show what you like. It doesn’t have to be a picture of what you want exactly. It’s fine to say “this is the cake I want, except I don’t want the designs on the sides,” or “just like this but with three tiers, stripes on two tiers, and sugar flowers in more colors.” For choosing flowers, you can show your florist three different bouquets and explain that you like the colors in one, the shape of another, and the way the stems are wrapped in the third. A good wedding vendor will tell you what they need to do to create the look you want for your wedding day based on everything you show them.
  • 2016-04-26-1461699611-3233967-tracyandjeffcaketable.JPG

  • Consider the way you want your guests to feel at your wedding. Do you want things to feel very formal? Or do you prefer a more relaxed atmosphere with less structure? These are the things that will help determine whether you do a seated/plated meal with place cards, or a free for all with food stations that stay open for an extended period while your guests dance, mix, and mingle. Tell your caterer what you have in mind so they can recommend the best food options for your budget and vision.
  • Music plays a big role in the event, too. Tell your wedding planner what kind of wedding reception you want to have. For a party feel, you have to play party music. You’ll probably want something lower key during cocktails and dinner, but maybe not if you’re doing stations instead of asking all your guests to be seated at one time. A live band can do a lot to reinforce a theme – calypso music for something tropical or zydeco for a Mardi Gras celebration, for example – but you can do the same with a DJ as long as you create a fantastic playlist. Remember to choose songs your guests will want to dance to or the party won’t get started easily. Ask your wedding planner for suggestions. If you can’t afford live music all night, maybe you can afford a guitar trio or jazz quartet for cocktails and dinner, and then switch it up later in the evening.

Some couples are crazy-easy to work with because they’re super descriptive about their wants and needs. We did a neon wedding for two brides, and even dyed the flowers. Another bride wore a fantastic designer gown with a skirt that lit up when the reception started, and the lights went down, so we created a light-themed wedding reception with black lights, glow necklaces, glasses and bracelets. And I’ve tied enough burlap and lace around vases for “vintage” weddings that I could do it with my eyes closed.

Your wedding planner and wedding vendors want you to be happy on your wedding day, and that means we have to deliver as promised and help you execute your own vision of your big day. We don’t have crystal balls – although I wish we did. We can’t read your mind. If you want something, you have to tell us about it. Describe what you have in mind, and send us pictures if you have them. A wedding planner’s ability to create your dream wedding depends, first and foremost, on your ability to explain what kind of wedding you want, in detail.

Until next time, happy wedding planning from Sandy Malone Weddings & Events!

Leah Remini Tells All In New Memoir About Scientology

Actress Leah Remini announced this week that she will soon release a memoir about her 30 years as a member of the Church of Scientology. The book will be “bold, brash, and bravely confessional,” according to publisher Ballantine Books. Troublemaker: Surviving Hollywood and Scientology is set to arrive on Nov. 3.

Remini, who is best known her starring role on the long-running sitcom “King of Queens,” became a Scientologist as a child, but publicly left the Church in 2013 because she didn’t want her 9-year-old daughter, Sofia, to become indoctrinated in its precepts.

She revealed her plan to write a tell-all about her time in the Church soon after her departure, but details were scarce until this week. Now, thanks to Remini’s Twitter account, we even have a cover:

A number of books released in recent years — most notably Lawrence Wright’s Going Clear, which was adapted into an Emmy-winning HBO documentary — have thrown open the doors of the famously secretive Church of Scientology. One of the central figures in “Going Clear” was “Million Dollar Baby” screenwriter Paul Haggis, and the book describes the lengths to which the Church will go to keep its most famous members — especially Tom Cruise — in the fold. But Troublemaker will be the first book to reveal the perspective of one of Scientology’s many celebrity members in their own words.

There’s no telling what she’ll say, though there’s certainly a good chance that much of it will paint the Church in a negative light. Remini has been a rather outspoken critic of Scientology over the past two years. At one point, she even filed a missing persons report for Shelly Miscavige, wife of David Miscavige, the head of the Church of Scientology, which the LAPD called “unfounded.”

The Church, for its part, sent The Huffington Post a statement slamming Remini’s book and behavior over the past couple years as a “pathetic quest to get publicity and seem relevant.”

“Ms. Remini needs to move on with life and stop obsessively blaming others for her problems, be it her former religion or those she has worked with professionally,” Scientology spokesperson Karin Pouw said.

The Church has a history of responding aggressively to criticism of its practices. Just this week, two movie theaters near the Scientology headquarters in Clearwater, Florida, canceled plans to show the film”Going Clear,” allegedly as a result of pressure mounted against them by the Church.

9 Things No One Tells You About Wedding Planning

by Terri Pous, BRIDES

It’s an unfortunate, but often inevitable, part of planning a wedding that there are just some things you won’t know or realize until after the big day is over. Sure, you may have a planner or wise family and friends to open your eyes to what’s really worth stressing about or what guests will actually notice, but most of the time, those things don’t dawn on you until later. The best resource for this kind of advice is real brides, so we asked some on the BRIDES Facebook page to share their time-honored insights. Here, some of the best tips:

Make a list of all the most important photos you want taken on your wedding day, give it to your photographer, but make sure you have a copy of it with you so that nobody misses anything. You’ll never get those moments back to get those pictures that you missed that day.” —Dawn Cavaluzzo Cooper

It’s your day! Don’t be so busy appeasing others that you don’t make yourself and you future spouse happy in the process.” —Ashlyn Beierle

It takes approximately 250 hours to plan a wedding… Make sure you have good people by your side. Also, don’t be afraid to ask a professional for help! Whether it is hiring a wedding planner or just having a consultation to figure out a couple things you are stuck on. Most of all, try to relax and don’t take everything so seriously. Understand that things are bound to go wrong, but there are always other options.” —Kailey-Lynn Hatfield

Everything will turn out okay and that no matter what goes wrong during the wedding, there’s always a way to keep the atmosphere positive.” —Ashley Kenny

Things will not go perfect on your wedding day, but you will be the only person to notice it. Don’t stress yourself out when you see the little hiccups and enjoy your day.” —Paulina Cotsaris

Save, save, save money! Weddings are so expensive. I can’t believe how much money my wedding has added up to be. Plan a budget!” —Iesha Palmer

Do not start planning the second you get engaged because you will change your mind on lots of things and have to redo them. I was so excited that I just started planning anything and everything I could. I wish I would have just let getting engaged sink in for a few weeks or months, and then started slow.”– Kayla Lynn

Allow at least a week, and possibly two, to call people that were sent an invitation but didn’t respond.” —Angela Pileggi Pelekanos

I wish I had known more about cultural traditions. I could have incorporated one or two to put a unique stamp on my wedding.” —Taylor Williamson Hebenstreit

6 Things No One Tells You About Long-Distance Relationships

The story never gets old: A girl meets a boy. They fall head over heels in love to realize later on one is bound to leave somewhere far.

My story, however, comes with a little twist. I traveled nearly 6,000 miles from home to get lost in thick Indonesian jungles with a person living in my hometown. Yet, moving to France in just a month after we return from the trip.

While I desperately wished to quit my job, pack my bags I couldn’t. Saying immediate good-bye forever at that point would have torn my heart apart as well. So I opted for that type of relationships I never believed could work — long-distance relationship (LDR).

Two years fast-forward, we are still together. We are still in love and I now have two homes in two different countries where I spend equal amount of time.

There’s one important most thing I need to tell you upfront: Long-distance relationships suck. You may eventually discover some positive aspects, but on your “bad days” you will curse each mile separating you.

Yet, if you ask me, “Is it actually worth to get into LDR?

Absolutely. Every. Single. (Pun intended). Minute.

If you found yourself at the point when you need to decide whether love on the distance is possible for you, here are some important things I have learned the hard way.

1. You got a free ticket for an emotional non-stop roller-coaster ride.

2015-08-18-1439906521-4684325-C953D6F0C2.jpg

I have always thought of myself as a big girl who doesn’t cry. The first month of LDR turned me into a total weepie.

It’s not that we weren’t doing “good”. It’s just due to complete novelty of the situation; I have experienced a vast variety of feelings from deep, depressive sadness to anger, joy, anxiety, enthusiasm and everything in between.

If you think it gets better in time, sorry, it doesn’t.

You will still have “good days” when you do your daily chores, feel excited about something, have fun times with friends. And there would be bad days. Terribly wrong days full of self-pity, heart-wrenching loneliness and drilling pain.

When you are together, your joy and happiness can’t be tamed. When you are apart, your sadness grows to the size of your personal universe.

2. You will become really creative in filling up your time.

To avoid the sadness consuming me, I started to get creative with keeping my brains occupied most of the day. I took language classes, learnt to cook a few dozens of new dishes, started biking regularly into the countryside, worked long hours, started a blog, revived some long-forgotten friendships, de-cluttered my flat, gave away my clothes and did some charity projects.

My partner started learning to play the guitar, learned to skate, became a pro-chess player, continued to study another language and make new friends and useful professional connections in his new home country.

Now you get the point, you will have a lot of “waiting” time you will need to productively waste unless you don’t want to be a sad girl all the time.

3. You will have a lot of tough choices to make.

2015-08-18-1439906742-7814172-DSC06541.JPG

Let’s start with some relatively simple questions both of you will need to answer honestly: “Where is this all heading?” and “What’s next?”; “How do you see our future together?” and “How can we close the distance?”

Add to the above developing the ultimate visiting schedule, shared expenses and financial planning, plus questions from all sort of random folks asking when/why don’t you get married or dump him.

4. Your friends’ may not be as supportive as you think.

If they are not in LDR as well, they won’t get all of your woes and complains 75 percent of the times. They will sound as sympathetic and compassionate as they can, but deep down inside you know they don’t understand your feelings.

Some would be much worse, asking seemingly hilarious questions like: “Does your boyfriend even exist?”, “How do you cope with the physical aspect of being in relationships?” and “Maybe you should date someone else?”.

Right. And than a cat becomes a dog.

5. In time, you develop an odd feeling of sureness.

2015-08-18-1439907055-7802456-FAEVFTT6YM.jpg

Your relationships are definitely not about sex. You are rather friends without benefits when you are not together. If that’s not true love, why would each if you bother to sustain this whole thing?

You are very honest with your partner and can share anything in person or online — fears, dreams, hopes, pain, insecurities. Suddenly, “jealousy” becomes an empty word for you as you grow a thousand per cent sure in your partner.

6. You will make it till the end.

I have never believed long-distance relationships work. I was proved wrong.

You will make it through. You can be a happy couple even if you don’t share one zip code.

If it is your person, you will survive everything together and make it through all the future couple struggles and life difficulties.

Joe Plumeri Tells New York Law School Grads: ‘Go Play In Traffic’

Businessman Joe Plumeri, who currently serves as vice chairman of the First Data Board of Directors, gave the commencement address at New York Law School on Tuesday. He dropped out of New York Law School in the 1960s to pursue a job on Wall Street but was awarded an honorary degree this week.

In his energetic speech, Plumeri said graduates must have commitment, purpose and vision in order to have success. He encouraged graduates to commit fully to whatever they wanted to do, using the analogy that Vikings burned their ships when they landed at a place they wanted to conquer. But without purpose, Plumeri said, they won’t succeed.

“The purpose has got to be genuine concern for what you do and the people you do it for,” he said.

Plumeri told the graduates to “go play in traffic” to find their vision.

“Now you’re saying, ‘What’s wrong with the guy? He wants me to go get hit by a car!'” Plumeri said. “That’s not what I want you to do. What I want you to do is engage.”

He further explained that “playing in traffic” is all about going out there and exploring your vision, making blunders and taking risks.

“Go out, play in traffic,” he said. “Something’s gonna happen eventually.”

Robert De Niro Tells Graduating Art Students: ‘You’re F***ed’

“You made it,” actor Robert De Niro told New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts graduates on Friday. “And you’re f***ed.”

The reality check to aspiring actors, dancers and others with creative degrees in the opening lines of De Niro’s commencement speech received an uproarious applause.

“The graduates in accounting? They all have jobs,” the legendary actor continued. “Where does that leave you? Envious of those accountants? I doubt it. They had a choice. Maybe they were passionate about accounting but I think it’s more likely that they used reason and logic and common sense to reach for a career that could give them the expectation of success and stability. Reason, logic, common sense at the Tisch School of Arts? Are you kidding me? But you didn’t have that choice, did you? You discovered a talent, developed an ambition and recognized your passion.”

That aversion to practical thinking, he told students, is what will make them successful.

“When it comes to the arts, passion should always trump common sense,” De Niro told the new alums. “You aren’t just following dreams, you’re reaching for your destiny. You’re a dancer, a singer, a choreographer, a musician, a filmmaker, a writer, a photographer, a director, a producer, an actor, an artist. Yeah, you’re f***ed. The good news is that that’s not a bad place to start.”

De Niro, a two-time Oscar winner, warned students to expect rejection and to not take it personally, like when he jokingly found out he couldn’t play Martin Luther King Jr. in “Selma.”

In the end, he sounded confident that the Tisch graduates will get their big breaks.

“I’m here to hand out my pictures and resumes to the directing and producing graduates.”

‘Bravetown’ Director Tells Why Latin Americans Can Relate To Theme Of Losing Family To War

Daniel Duran has made a name for himself directing music videos for some the world’s biggest Latin stars. Now, the 35-year-old Venezuelan-born director has combined his passion for music with a dramatic script for his first feature film, “Bravetown.”

Duran’s directorial debut focuses on 17-year-old New York City teen Josh Harvest (Lucas Till, “X-Men: First Class”), who is a troubled but talented DJ sent to spend time with his estranged father (Josh Duhamel) after an accidental drug overdose. As Josh arrives to deal with his own family problems, he begins to realize that residents of the small Army town in North Dakota are struggling to come to terms with losing many of their loved ones to war.

“Bravetown” also includes performances by Kherington Payne (“Fame”) and Oscar-nominated actress Laura Dern (“Wild”), as a clinically depressed mother unable to cope with the loss of her son.

Duran recently discussed the film with The Huffington Post via email. He opened up about how his relationship with his father connects him to the film, and how many Latin Americans can identify with the movie’s theme of losing loved ones to violence.

daniel duran
Director Daniel Duran (left) and actor Josh Duhamel on the set of “Bravetown.”

You were born and raised in Venezuela. How did you end up doing a film that deals with topics like the trauma of returning war veterans and how a town in middle America is dealing losing loved ones to war?

From the start, the theme was something I felt was very universal because it’s a story about a DJ that has these personal and family problems — problems that affect anyone in the world, from any nationality — and that was my main focus.

I think when you deal with conflicts concerning family, love, heartbreak, father-son relationships, they’re topics that anyone can identify with and that’s where I got hooked in this project. Plus, the movie is charged with music and I come from that world with my music video [background]. It was easy for me to understand Josh’s musical world and how he used music to deal with the whirlwind of emotions he was living. It is a movie that exists in a totally American world, but at the same time it touches upon very universal themes.

How did you feel personally connected to the story?

I feel I connected with the emotions. I also come from a family with separated parents, in which I didn’t have a relationship with my father. The difference is that Josh experienced that as a teenager, and for me it was imagining what that relationship would’ve been like. But unlike Josh, my relationship with my mother has always been spectacular and I never had the type of issues he had [with his mom.]

On the other hand, I felt I identified with Josh’s musical connection as a DJ because music has always been present in my life and in my creations. One of the things I’ve always liked is to talk to young people and I feel that his movie connects with teens, because despite it being a very mature story, it is seen from their point of view.

What kind of obstacles did you face while working on “Bravetown?”

This was my first film and it was a big cast. I think my first obstacle was how to face that challenge and the insecurity I had at one point about being able to succeed. Having English be my second language was also a big obstacle, to think that at some point I wasn’t going to be able to communicate exactly what I wanted. Thank God I had the proper words to be able to express what I wanted to the crew and cast, to be able to steer the wheel of this boat.

Back to the theme of losing loved ones to war and how you deal with that, there are plenty of people in Latin America who can relate to what it’s like to lose someone to violence.

Perhaps in Latin American countries we don’t lose soldiers, but we have a high percentage of deaths caused by crime. That’s a kind of war with which we’ve have to deal. I think that people from other countries will identify with “Bravetown,” because it’s that feeling of losing a loved one to violence that creates wounds that are difficult to heal. And how you face that loss, that is the important point of the movie.

What was it like working with Laura Dern, who recently was nominated for the Oscar for “Wild”?

Laura is a true lady and working with her was incredible — a delight. I learned a lot from her. For me it was an experience to create that character with her because it was written one way and when we sat down to talk, we gave it a different tone. That’s the magic that happens when you work with someone with her talent.

This was your first film, but what can we expect from you in the future?

I want to continue telling great stories and entertaining. Right now I’m focused on closing the chapter with “Bravetown,” but I am starting to read and write ideas. But I don’t know what’s coming yet.

And now that you are closing the chapter, how do you feel about your first film?

I feel very happy, excited and enthusiastic about people seeing my first project. I think it was an incredible project with an excellent cast. … I [also] had the opportunity to work with my director of photography Angel Berroeta — who has been with me since my music videos and with pride I can say he’s from Maracay, Venezuela — Salvadorian writer Oscar Torres, Argentine production designer Tomas Voth, Venezuelan composer Angelo Milli. You could say this was a movie made by Latinos for Americans, and that makes me very proud.

“Bravetown” will be in select theaters beginning on Friday, May 8.

CORRECTION: This article has been edited to correct the reference to Laura Dern, who has been nominated for Oscars twice, but has not won.

Jon Stewart Tells Dana Perino That Fox’s ‘The Five’ & ‘The Daily Show’ Would Make A ‘Sh*t Taco’

“The Daily Show” is not exactly known as friendly turf for Fox News hosts. But on Wednesday night, “The Five” co-host Dana Perino ventured into what many at her channel might regard as enemy territory.

When Jon Stewart explained that his team was “obsessed” with “The Five,” Perino suggested their programs join forces.

“It’s like Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups — peanut butter and chocolate,” Perino said. “Maybe we could all get together here and have a mashup.”

“I think of it more as a shit taco,” Stewart replied. “I’m not saying who’s who. I’m just saying I don’t know that it’s necessarily two great tastes that go great together.”

As he mocked some of her co-hosts, Perino gamely played along. And when Stewart asked about the “dumb guy” on the “The Five,” Perino quickly asked, “Could you be more specific?”

Stewart was referring to Eric Bolling, who Perino noted had a dog named Freedom “after the Freedom Towers, ok, so watch the jokes.”

That elicited an eye roll from Stewart.

“My dog’s named Holocaust,” Stewart shot back. “I’m just saying, you want to have a dog tragedy-off, well, I think I’ve got that covered.”

Dreaming of Dior: Every Dress Tells a Story

Dreaming of Dior: Every Dress Tells a Story

Charlotte Smith had already had more than her fair share of fabulous dresses and adventures. She lived life to the fullest in London, Paris and New York before falling in love with Australia and making it her home. Then she discovered that she had inherited a priceless vintage clothing collection from her American Quaker godmother, Doris Darnell. When the boxes started arriving, they were filled with more than three thousand pieces dating from 1790 to 1995, from Dior and Chanel originals to a dainty pioneer dress. But when she unearthed her godmother’s book of stories, the true value of what she had been given hit home. This wasn’t merely a collection of beautiful things; it was a collection of lives. Women’s lives. Tiny snapshots of our joys and disappointments, our entrances and exits, triumphant and tragic. This is a book for any woman who knows a dress can hold a lifetime of memories. Charlotte Smith is Curator of The Fashion and Textile Gallery in Sydney which is also home to The Darnell Collection, the 5000 piece vintage collection Charlotte inherited from her godmother, Doris Darnell. Born in Hong Kong and raised in the United States, Charlotte has a degree from Hollins College in Art History and has lived and worked in America, England, and France for Impressionist art dealers. She moved to Australia in 1998 and opened a shop selling French country antiques. Charlotte has one daughter. Grant Cowan has worked as an illustrator on magazines like “Harper’s Bazaar,” “Glamour” and “Red “magazine. He studied fashion design and lived in London before moving to Australia to teach fashion illustration. Grant is a freelance fashion illustrator and works with fashion schools in Sydney.

Jane Lynch Tells The Real Story Of How Lisa Kudrow Became Phoebe

Actress and comedian Jane Lynch knows a little something about Lisa Kudrow’s career before Kudrow landed the iconic role of Phoebe in the beloved TV series “Friends.”

In a conversation with HuffPost Live’s Alyona Minkovski about the final season of “Glee,” Lynch both debunked the “Hollywood urban myth” that claimed she auditioned for the quirky “Friends” role and explained how Lisa Kudrow nailed the part.

“Lisa Kudrow got the role [as Roz] on ‘Fraiser’ and was fired,” Lynch said, later adding, “And then Lisa, they cast in ‘Friends,’ and then I mean, come on, that was the role of a lifetime.”

As far as for the aforementioned urban myth, Lynch said, “I read … that I auditioned for that, too” and later added she wished she had gotten that caliber of audition at that time in her career.
