Gen Z Females Spend More on Beauty Than Apparel

Teens are spending more on beauty than they are on apparel.
That was the conclusion from Piper Jaffray’s 35th semiannual Generation Z survey of more than 6,000 U.S. teens.
According to the latest data, teen spending rose 6 percent from the fall’s survey, and is up from 2 percent a year ago. Food, beauty and video games continue to dominate wallet share. In apparel, the athletic cycle is “above historic average, but [the] streetwear cycle accelerates [it],” the report concluded.
For beauty, females spent $ 368 per year, with spending for skin care leading the way. That’s an increase of 18 percent year-over-year. Top beauty destinations were Sephora at 44 percent; followed by Ulta, 28 percent; Target, 11 percent; CVS, 3 percent and Walmart, 3 percent. The top skin care brand was Neutrogena at 24 percent. Cetaphil and Clinique tied for second place at 7 percent. They were followed by Clean & Clear at 6 percent and Mario Badescu at 4 percent.
For apparel, streetwear saw the largest incremental gains led by Vans for footwear and Supreme for apparel. Overall, Nike held the top spot for apparel brands at 23 percent. Next was American Eagle, 10 percent; followed by Adidas, 6 percent and Forever 21 at

Brits Spend More on Fashion Than the French, EU Stats Show

BRITISH DANDIES: Britons spend more on clothing and footwear as a percentage of household expenditure than their French, Spanish, German and Greek counterparts, according to Eurostat, which crunches data on the European Union and its inhabitants.
According to the report, households in the EU spent an average 4.9 percent of their total expenditure on clothing and footwear. Estonian households spent the most, with 6.8 percent, followed by the Portuguese with 6.3 percent and the Italians, 6.2 percent.
Britain was on par with Luxembourg, with both spending about 5.6 percent. According to Eurostat, Greece and France both spent 3.8 percent, while Bulgarians splashed out the least, at 3.2 percent.
The Eurostat report, which was published in early January and is based on 2016 numbers, said nearly 400 billion euros was spent on clothing and footwear in Europe in the year.
According to the most recent figures from Mintel and the British Fashion Council, Britons are poised to spend even more on their closets in the coming years.
The U.K. men’s clothing market grew by 2.8 percent in 2016 to reach 14.5 billion pounds. Although the men’s wear sector still only accounts for 27 percent of the total clothing market, it is growing at more than twice the

Rihanna Runs on Less Than Four Hours of Sleep a Night

STAYING AWAKE: What does it take to become Rihanna? Less than four hours’ sleep per night, apparently.
The “Wild Thoughts” singer shares insights into her personal life and inspirations as guest editor of the December issue of Vogue Paris, scheduled to go on sale on Dec. 1. The issue comes with three separate covers shot by Inez Van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin, Jean-Paul Goude and Juergen Teller.
A section titled “A Girl Like Me” opens with a candid shot of Rihanna divebombing into a pool in the Dominican Republic. In the accompanying caption, she reveals that she usually likes to spend her days off on tour sightseeing rather than sunbathing.
“I have a lot of trouble switching off. Even when I get home early, which means before 1 a.m., I start binge-watching shows or documentaries, which I love. I can’t go straight to bed. As a matter of fact, I only sleep three or four hours a night,” she is quoted as saying in the French text.

Iman Shumpert Wants to Be More Than an NBA Player

When WWD interviewed NBA player Iman Shumpert three years ago, his life was much different. Shumpert’s girlfriend at the time, artist Teyana Taylor, is now his wife, and they have an almost two-year-old daughter named Iman Jr. and nicknamed Junie — he’s set to star in a VH1 reality TV show with his family next year.
Shumpert also looks and behaves differently. He’s cut off his signature high top fade — he explains why later on — and feels less inhibited by what it typically means to be a basketball player.
“I’m playing ball. I’m rapping. I’m doing my clothing line, but every time I try to do the other stuff people say that I’m not focused on basketball,” said Shumpert, sounding frustrated. “It doesn’t make sense.”
Despite this, Shumpert is diving deeper into his creative endeavors and relaunching his clothing line, Post 90s, next year, and helping raise money for the hurricane victims in St. Maarten with a jersey he’s designed with his brother. Here, the Cleveland Cavaliers player talks about kneeling during the national anthem, working with fashion brands and his other projects.

Ashley Graham, Candice Huffine Reflect on Impacting More Than Just Sales With Lane Bryant Ads

NEW YORK — Being on the set of a national lingerie ad campaign with major models conjures a stereotype of thumping music, empty Champagne glasses and frazzled assistants scurrying to-and-fro, procuring their every demand.
But the vibe was far more girl power than fashion diva at Lane Bryant’s shoot for its fall lingerie campaign on Monday.
Reprising their roles in the latest ads were Ashley Graham of TED Talks, Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition and Candice Huffine, whose May cover of Elle and runway jaunt for Prabal Gurung have her on the radars of major casting directors. And while these women have been modeling for the plus-size retailer for well over a decade, it’s only been in the last few years that they’ve caught the attention of the overall fashion industry — not to mention the public, whose outcry for stylish clothes in a greater size range is finally being heard.
“I wanted to be a model so badly, it was my calling,” said 32-year-old Huffine, who has been modeling for 17 years, 10 of those signed with Lane Bryant. Even after all that time, she didn’t anticipate the fame that would sweep over her and her fellow plus-size models who appeared in the 2015 “I’m

Paris Men’s Sizzles — In More Ways Than One

PARIS — Call it the Macron effect. With Paris men’s fashion week in full swing since Wednesday, retailers and brands say there’s a positive global energy that is helping propel business, boosted by the recent election of President Emmanuel Macron — a man well-connected with the nation’s luxury conglomerates and also contributing to the goodwill toward France.
“I moved to Paris three months ago, and I have to say that, especially since the elections, there is a high level of confidence, trust and energy. I am hearing that from all over the world,” said Balmain’s new chief executive officer Massimo Piombini.
“It’s a global energy that is spreading. There is a global drive,” agreed Pascal Morand, executive president of the Fédération Française de la Couture du Prêt-à-Porter des Couturiers et des Créateurs de Mode.
That’s despite Paris being further rattled by an attack on the Avenue des Champs-Élysées on Monday, marking the fifth time in four months that security forces were targeted in the city. Morand said the federation and its members are working with state services and police to ensure safety during the men’s season and the women’s couture shows, which begin July 2.

6 Reasons Introverts Are Better At Dating Than Extroverts

It might seem like extroverts have a leg over introverts when it comes to dating, but introverts are the ones who actually bring more to the table. Sure, extroverts are naturally outgoing and talkative, but introverts lure dates in with their thoughtful conversation, unmatched listening skills and super sexy sense of mystery.

Below, self-identifying introverts and experts on introversion share six reasons introverts are surprisingly good at dating.

1. Introverts are masters of mystery.

Introverts are alluring to others because they aren’t inclined to give everything away at once, said Laurie Helgoe, the author of Introvert Power: Why Your Inner Life Is Your Hidden Strength. In a world of TMI, that sense of mystery is powerful.

“A conversation with an introvert is like a journey to a vast and complex new landscape; you see part of the picture but also know there is much more to interest you down the road,” Helgoe told HuffPost. “Because introverts aren’t in a rush to tell all, they have the luxury of coming up with insights, ideas and funny observations that others miss.”

2. They genuinely listen to what their date has to say.

Forget monopolizing the conversation. Introverts would rather listen then spill their whole life story, brag about a recent vacation or lecture their date on news of the day. They value a back-and-forth conversation and ask follow-up questions. (Bonus points for that: A recent Harvard Business School study found that people who asked a lot of questions, particularly follow-up questions, were considered more likable by others.)

In short, introverts win their dates over with their genuine curiosity and ability to listen with intention, said Michaela Chung, the author of The Irresistible Introvert: Harness The Power of Quiet Charisma in a Loud World.

“As someone who has gone on a lot of dates with both introverts and extroverts, I can honestly say that the most exceptional dates were with fellow introverts,” Chung said. “Instead of flitting from topic to topic or telling one long-winded story after the next, introverts slow down, look you in the eye and truly listen. Introverts draw you in by posing interesting questions and sharing their own unique perspectives.”

3. Introverts tend to have deeper and more meaningful relationships.

Introverts would rather have a few promising relationship leads than dozens of open chats with people they’re only vaguely interested in, said Steven Zawila, a writer and the editor of the blog Charming Introvert.

“As an introvert, I take my time when I’m getting to know someone romantically and I don’t really try to get too physical until I know them better,” he said. “I compare myself to my extroverted friend: He enjoys hitting on a lot of women at bars and clubs and taking things to the next level fairly quickly. He has a lot of numbers in his phone but my relationships have lasted longer and been more meaningful, I think.”

4. Introverts know who they are and what they want.

Introverts put forethought into everything they do ― and that includes sizing up the pros and cons of a potential relationship. Generally speaking, they know who they are and what they want, Jennifer B. Kahnweiler, the author of The Genius of Opposites: How Introverts and Extroverts Achieve Extraordinary Results Together.

“A huge benefit of reflection while dating is that introverts have probably taken the time to get to know themselves as a single person,” she said. “Most introverts aren’t looking for that other person to ‘complete’ them, which actually makes them more a interesting person to their date.”

5. Introverts won’t spend time on the date staring at their phone or looking for someone else to talk to.

Introverts may be wary of small talk, but once they’re committed to a conversation, they truly lock in. Chung compared her experience dating to the experiences of an ex-roommate to illustrate some key differences in how extroverts and introverts look for love IRL.

“My roommate, an extrovert, seemed to be the epitome of extroverted charm: she was outgoing, witty and full of energy,” Chung explained. “At first, I envied her easy ability to chat and flirt with any guy in the room, but as I spent more time with her, I realized that her attention was always divided. She was constantly looking at her phone or scanning the room.”

As an introvert, Chung felt like her friend was missing out on opportunities to have deep, meaningful conversation with worthwhile matches.

“Introverts naturally slow down in conversation and give you their full attention which is so refreshing,” she said.

A post shared by Marzi (@introvertdoodles) on

6.  Introverts provide refuge from a too-fast, too-intense world.

One of the biggest selling points for dating an introvert, according to Helgoe? In this fluid, constantly changing modern world, introverts provide stability and calmness to the ones they love.

“When an introvert confidently owns his or her preference for a slower pace, the message is, ‘I’m not trying too hard. I’m comfortable with pauses. I have time,’” she explained. “That’s powerful. An introvert is less interested in performing and competing and more willing to truly be with you.”

Danganronpa 3 Is Weird, Wonderful, and Prettier than Ever

At first glance, Danganronpa is pretty weird. Each game follows a new group of high school students held captive by a robot bear forcing them to kill each other in order to escape. With each new murder comes an investigation, and eventually a trial to present evidence and prove who committed the crime. With me so far? You should be.

Danganronpa is an underrated gem in PlayStation’s library of exclusives, a subversive and sardonic adventure game that mocks anime tropes while simultaneously embracing them. Its humor is dark and its grisly crime scenes are darker still, but the series also has an unexpected heart. Its portrayal of hope versus despair is mostly tongue-in-cheek but occasionally unexpectedly profound, using exaggerated characters and situations to actually send a fairly inspiring message: even when you think there’s no hope left, there might be some.

Mario Testino Goes Larger Than Life in Berlin

MARIO MAKES IT BIG: Mario Testino’s “Undressed” is the Helmut Newton Foundation’s largest-scale show to date. In this exhibit of 50 published and private photographs of men and women often wearing nothing more than their tattoos, Testino blew up his images to completely fill the walls in three halls of Berlin’s graciously proportioned Museum of Photography.
Looming over 10 feet from the ceiling to the walls’ lower wood moldings, and spanning sometimes 23 feet in width, this site-specific installation conceived exclusively for the Helmut Newton Foundation offers a spectacular yet also intimate view. For as the photographer noted prior to the show’s opening June 2, the enormous size and full bleed from corner to corner means there are no distractions. The viewer is almost compelled to immerse his or herself in the images, turning from “a voyeur into a participant. We’re in a moment when people want to interact with what they see, and not just look. They want to be part of it, so who knows? Maybe people will now go home and take photos of each other like this.”
That means equal undressing rights for all, with full frontals, male and female, to enticing back views, moments of amorous play

It Doesn’t Get Much Cuter Than This Baby’s Donut Smash Photos

We all know parents love a good baby cake smash, but the donut smash might be even cuter.

In honor of National Donut Day, photographer Sarah Gibson of Indigo Bird Photography took pictures of an adorable baby named Atlas smashing a donut dessert spread. And clearly, he loved it.

Atlas’ mom reached out to Gibson about doing a themed photo shoot for his first birthday, the photographer suggested a donut smash, and the rest was history.

The photographer said the baby was “intrigued” when he saw the dozen colorful donuts and “just went to town once he tasted the icing!”

“He liked the chocolate frosting the best! He tried all of the flavors, but kept going back to the chocolate one. That’s a baby after my own heart!” she added.

Atlas’ big brother, Malachi, helped out by singing and dancing to get his baby to look at the camera instead of the donuts the whole time.

Though this was Gibson’s first donut shoot, she said it definitely won’t be her last. “I love the added element of humor the donuts bring to the session. I mean, who doesn’t love donuts? And Atlas started throwing the donuts once he was full of sugar, which is something that hasn’t happened at a regular cake smash.”

Added the photographer, “Now I’m looking for a baby who wants to do a taco smash!”

Donald Trump Was Funnier Than ‘Saturday Night Live’

In a now infamous clip from July 2015, Rep. Keith Ellison (D-Minn.) suggested on ABC’s “The Week” that Donald Trump might become the president. To this, host George Stephanopoulos and New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman broke out into laughter.

Then, and since that time, Trump’s words and actions have appeared so ridiculous and terrible that from a certain perspective, it is darkly hilarious this person became the President of The United States.

In the week leading up to the “Saturday Night Live” season finale last weekend, Trump-related reporting went into overdrive, as The New York Times and The Washington Post published extremely damaging stories about the current administration on a daily basis. By Thursday, the Times felt their readers could use a story titled “Trying Not to Drown in a Flood of Major Breaking News.”

After an “SNL” season defined by very popular but hit-and-miss Trump parodies, the show finished with an episode that barely even addressed the major headlines of the past week. In a cold open that mirrored the show’s opening after Hillary Clinton’s loss, Alec Baldwin played Trump while singing Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah.” The real Trump had had a terrible past few days, and the show probably correctly assumed the viewers already knew that. It seems the writers decided there was little they could possibly add, other than acknowledge it, shrug and wink.

“Donald Trump presents something of a conundrum to political humorists who consider him a gift from God but a man who has repeatedly proven himself zanier, wackier, and funnier than whatever professional ridiculers can come up with,” wrote James Andrew Miller, the author of Live From New York: The Complete, Uncensored History of Saturday Night Live as Told by Its Stars, Writers, and Guests, back in fall 2015 for Vanity Fair.

Miller continued on about Trump for this piece, describing him as someone “who one-ups and out-does his own comic critics; who out-lampoons the lampooners; and who raises the bar so high that comedians have trouble reaching it.”

“SNL” may have had a very successful season in terms of achieving a relatively large viewership, as they beat out their typical ratings on just about a weekly basis.

But even if this country turned its tired eyes to “SNL” in seeking catharsis for the Trump mess, the 42nd season of the show often faltered in trying to top the inherent hilarity of the news itself.

Trump was a tower, and “SNL” never escaped that shadow.

The problem “SNL” faced this season was not lost on critics.

The Verge published a review of the Alec Baldwin-hosted episode in February with the lede, “’Saturday Night Live’ is enjoying its highest ratings in over 20 years, despite lending absolutely no credence to the argument that comedy might improve under the Trump administration.” The article went on to give praise to Melissa McCarthy’s Sean Spicer impression (focusing on her physical comedy gifts), but then argued, “The rest of last night’s mostly political episode was a series of riffs on the easiest possible joke you could make about anything Trump does: he’s stupid and he’s sad and he doesn’t know what he’s doing.”

A review on The Ringer of McCarthy’s turn at hosting the show in May pointed out that as this season went on, the writers seemed to struggle to cover Trump in a meaningful way. “SNL is at its best when it uses current events as a segue into comedy, rather than comedy as a means of commenting on current events,” wrote Alison Herman. “That speaks to a larger truth about ‘Saturday Night Live’: Often, the show appears to do political sketches more out of obligation than passion.”

The New Yorker focused on “the limits of Trump mockery,” pointing out that the show’s writers seemed to have more meta-jokes about how they can’t just keep making fun of him forever as the season went on. “If, in the past, ‘Saturday Night Live’ had been goading Trump to lash out, now it seemed that the show, like the rest of us, was asking him to cut it out,” wrote the New Yorker’s Ian Crouch.

Oftentimes, this “SNL” season felt like one big sigh, an under-the-breath muttering of “are we doing this again?” and then a satirical recap aimed at the deluge of bad Trump news. And, of course, none of this was helped by the show’s decision to have Trump host the show while he was still a candidate (an experience former “SNL” star Taran Killam confirmed was “not fun”).

The 42-year-old sketch show is far from in dire straits, though. As previously mentioned, the ratings were good this season. Still, there does seem to be this underlying problem ― an inadequate cog within an otherwise generally well-oiled machine.

The show just can’t beat actual news about Trump for hilarity. Even if the former is darkly and perversely funny, it still creates a huge elephant in the room for every “SNL” episode tasked with responding to the trending topics of the week. It’s always Trump. And this new reality is consistently more absurd than the political satire Americans are typically accustomed to.

Baldwin admitted to this problem in an interview with his wife, “Extra” correspondent Hilaria Baldwin, last February. “Another thing I find that’s so weird about the stuff we’re doing, we’re just repeating back what he says … Doing this is strange, but what is even more strange is this is real.”

In April, Splitsider had a great review of the show that also focused on this feeling that “SNL” inherently just goes through the motions as a result of Trump’s increasingly absurdist presidency. Here’s a passage:

“Saturday Night Live” hasn’t gotten edgy or daring or important in the age of Trump: instead life has turned into a mediocre “Saturday Night Live” sketch. “Saturday Night Live” is uniquely qualified to capture that particular moment in our zeitgeist. “What if Donald Trump were president, and he was, of course, super vulgar and obnoxious and arrogant but also super racist?” is the half-assed “Saturday Night Live” sketch idea that has become our horrifyingly half-assed reality.

Week to week, the show became predictable as well. Trump and his administration were super popular characters every single week. And so the show beat jokes to death, as if “SNL” had done featured more cowbell or Stefon over and over again, multiple times, in all its episodes.

On top of this, viewers could essentially know most of the jokes beforehand, having read about or watched it all in the news. During the week, it was likely people on social platforms like Twitter and YouTube would have made better riffs on the weekly headlines. Days later, “SNL” could offer a team of writers, expensive set design, costumes and movie stars to act out the news, but that wasn’t always enough.

This season had a few truly inspired Trump-related sketches that are deserving of the heaps of praise they received. “Through Donald’s Eyes,” starring the wrestler John Cena, comes to mind. The first iteration of McCarthy’s Spicer, obviously. “Black Jeopardy” with Tom Hanks, which came before the election but still holds up.

“SNL” undoubtedly had many highs this year, but the season finale could not come soon enough. With Trump still in office, how many times could the show really have something new to say? The man’s been the best joke in New York City for decades. At a certain point, all anyone can do is shrug and agree that the guy is still just as absurd as the week before.

Over the course of Trump’s rise, “SNL” has been far from alone in struggling to parody him. The creators of “South Park,” Trey Parker and Matt Stone expressed frustration that Trump is so ridiculous and hinted a desire to stop including him in their show. In the latest press tour for “Veep,” the team behind the show spoke out repeatedly about how their political show could never match the absurdity of the real-life Trump presidency.

“[Trump] is ruining comedy,” executive producer David Mandel matter-of-factly told HuffPost last year.

And on top of this, very obviously, Trump making comedy tricky is far from the worst thing the existence of his administration has wrought. This is something “SNL” is aware of, too. In a Hollywood Reporter interview, “Weekend Update” anchor Colin Jost summed this up well as he said:

“Anytime people are paying more attention to politics, it’s good for our show. But you almost feel like a war profiteer at times because we’ve benefited from a situation that’s so tough.”

The higher ratings this season reflect that “SNL” was mostly successful in addressing these problems. Baldwin’s Trump was funny!

But Trump was funnier.

HuffPost reached out to the Live From New York author, James Andrew Miller, to see if he’d comment as a follow-up to that prescient 2015 summarization of the Trump problem “SNL” would face.

Miller had this to say about the show’s future:

As a politician and president, Trump is an outlier in virtually every respect, so it stands to reason that even after 42 years, “SNL” is swimming in uncharted waters. And looking ahead, that means questions like, “Will the audience get burned out on Trump sketches?” and “If investigations reveal more troubling information, will things get too serious for satire?” are difficult to answer. “SNL” has seen a lot in its history and will do its best to adapt to whatever happens, but one thing can clearly be said as of now: The Trump victory was one of the best gifts to the show since it first went on the air in ‘75.

Given the seemingly endless amount of damning leaks about the Trump administration, “SNL” may not even have to reckon with a Trump presidency come next season. But in the off chance that’s not the case, the show may be doomed to exist in Trump’s dark, looming shadow.

More Than 5,000 People Complained To The FCC About Colbert’s ‘Homophobic’ Trump Joke

Earlier this month, Stephen Colbert referred to President Donald Trump as Russian President Vladimir Putin’s “cock holster” in a fiery, if tongue-in-cheek, rant that instantly sparked controversy.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) announced May 19 that it had received over 5,700 complaints from viewers about the May 1 episode of “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” with most condemning the host’s “cock holster” joke, Politico reports

The nature of the individual complaints varied widely. Still, many pinpointed what they saw as the homophobia underlying Colbert’s words. “By using accusations of being gay as an insult,” one Illinois viewer wrote, “it implied that there is something wrong with being gay.” A New York felt similarly, telling the FCC, “I really thought we left this kind of bigotry in the wastebin of history. Instead I have to endure it during dinner with me and my husband’s son.”

Viewers from both sides of the political spectrum were equally angered by the Colbert rant, even if their complaints differed in their specifics. “I know all you Commie shills hate this president,” one complaint from Florida read, “but it is your job to keep these Leftists from dragging this nation further into the gutter.”

There’s no word yet on what impact the volume of complaints will have. On May 5, FCC chairman Ajit Pai said his agency had launched an investigation into Colbert’s Trump joke and would “apply the law fairly and fully.”

“I have had a chance to see the clip now and so, as we get complaints, and we’ve gotten a number of them, we are going to take the facts that we find,” Pai said on The Rich Zeoli Show on Talk Radio 1210 WPHT, “and we are going to apply the law as it’s been set out by the Supreme Court and other courts and we’ll take the appropriate action.”

If the commission determines that Colbert violated FCC regulations, Pai added, he’d likely face a fine.

Two days after the “cock holster” remark aired, Colbert himself addressed the controversy. On the May 3 installment of “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” he said he didn’t regret making the comments but would “change a few words that were cruder than they needed to be” if he could.

He also shrugged off the claims of homophobia. “I just want to say for the record, life is short,” he said, “and anyone who expresses their love for another person, in their own way, is to me, an American hero.”

The public backlash, meanwhile, seems to have had little impact on Colbert’s ratings. Viewership of “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” has been boffo in recent weeks, CNN reports. The week following the controversy turned out to be a real win for the show, which beat its closest rival, “The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon,” by its highest margin (410,000 viewers) since September 2015.

The Absolute Worst Song Ever Is More Terrible Than You Ever Imagined

Here’s yet another reason to hate the media: We’re making you listen to the worst song ever recorded.

This past weekend, a HuffPost writer found a ditty called “Fast Food Song,” which rose to No. 2 on the UK Singles Chart in 2003 for a group called the Fast Food Rockers.

Music is a subjective thing, but we’re pretty certain that no one can listen to this and not realize it’s a recording so terrible that playing it to others without warning might constitute a violation of the Geneva Convention.

The song’s chorus is annoyingly catchy ―“Pizza Hut, Pizza Hut/ Kentucky Fried Chicken and a Pizza Hut/ Pizza Hut, Pizza Hut/ Kentucky Fried Chicken and a Pizza Hut/ McDonald’s, McDonald’s/ Kentucky Fried Chicken and a Pizza Hut.”

We guarantee that anyone who hears it is going to have this earworm stuck in their noggin for the next 24 hours.

Although this song was a pretty big hit in jolly old England, the Fast Food Rockers were never foisted on Americans ― yet another reason to appreciate our British allies.

The British trio (four people if you count “Hot Dog,” a non-singing person in a giant blue dog suit who joins in the video romp) freely admitted to the BBC its music was cheesy. So much so, that the follow-up single was called “Say Cheese!”

We haven’t listened to that one yet. We don’t have the guts. If you’re more daring, here’s the link.

Please forgive us. “Fast Food Song” is the musical equivalent of the Mealbreakers gallery below.

The Casting Of A White Actor As Native Hawaiian Hero Cuts Deeper Than You Think

Prominent filmmakers by now have whitewashed so many roles meant for people of color that the internet doesn’t have time to put down its digital torches and pitchforks from one film outrage before the next one goes viral.

But the latest case of cultural appropriation wades into a painful part of American history and targets a very small minority that has been struggling for decades to understand its place within the U.S.: Native Hawaiians.

When it was announced on Tuesday that Zach McGowan ― a white actor who has starred in TV hits including “Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.” and “Shameless” ― was cast in the role of real-life Native Hawaiian hero Benehakaka Kanahele in the WWII-era drama “Niʻihau,” people online, Hawaiians especially, responded with anger.

Their ire was a familiar refrain: Why must a white actor play a role meant for a person of color ― again? The announcement reminded many people of Emma Stone’s controversial casting as a part Native Hawaiian and Chinese woman in Cameron Crowe’s “Aloha.”

“In movies and television, you get everyone except us ― everyone but us portraying us,” Anne Keala Kelly, a Native Hawaiian filmmaker, told HuffPost. “It’s a total exploitation of an actual historical event about an actual Hawaiian person.”

Kelly says this issue cuts deep for Native Hawaiians who are still reeling from the illegal overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom led by a group of American businessmen in 1893 ― a controversial event that opened the door for the Hawaiian islands’ annexation and eventual statehood in 1959.

Kelly published a documentary about these events in her 2008 film, “Noho Hewa.”

During Hawaii’s annexation and eventual path to statehood, there was an increase in Western presence in the islands that nearly wiped out Native Hawaiian culture: Hawaiian language was banned in schools, Western-owned plantations dominated the lands and, eventually, military presence increased dramatically and tourism skyrocketed.

The casting of a white man in Kanahele’s place is salt in a wound for Hawaiians who have been left feeling erased by Western influence. Kelly called it “Poly-face” ― a version of the phrase “blackface,” but directed at the indigenous people the film “Ni’ihau” portrays: Polynesians.

“It’s cultural cannibalism, it’s like someone eating you while you’re alive,” Kelly told HuffPost. “They’re erasing me, or any Hawaiian, as we’re standing here. It’s the narrative equivalent of ethnic cleansing. We’re being marginalized while we’re still here.”

Gabriel Robertson, the director of “Ni’ihau” did not respond to HuffPost’s request for comment.

It’s cultural cannibalism. They’re erasing me, or any Hawaiian, as we’re standing here.
Anne Keala Kelly

Whitewashing and cultural appropriation aside, critics also say the political timing of “Ni’ihau” puts Hawaii residents ― both native and transplants ― in a dangerous situation at a time when tensions between North Korea and the U.S. have spiked under the Trump administration.

According to early reports, the film retells the true story of a Japanese pilot who crash-landed on Ni’ihau (a private Hawaiian island where tourism is famously banned to protect the native population) during the attacks on Pearl Harbor. The surviving pilot convinced two of the island’s residents of Japanese descent to defect against the U.S. The pilot and the defectors took Kanahele and his wife hostage, but were eventually killed after the Hawaiian couple fought back against their captors.

The U.S. Army awarded Kanahele, who was shot three times during the struggle, with the Medal for Merit and the Purple Heart for his heroic actions.

Ku’ualoha Ho’omanawanui, a professor of Hawaiian literature at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, believes that recounting this story now could stoke anti-Asian fears and provoke more tension between the U.S. and North Korea.

The film “is particularly problematic in an age of Trumpian political warmongering with North Korea, with Hawaii as a potential nuclear target, and a potential ground zero for nuclear annihilation, especially if China gets involved,” he told HuffPost.

Indeed, North Korea has ramped up its nuclear program in an attempt to develop technology advanced enough to deliver a strike that could reach the U.S. And while most experts believe Hawaii faces no immediate threat from the Hermit Kingdom, military officials in the Pacific have renewed their focus on protecting the islands from a potential strike.

Ho’omanawanui said of the film, “This kind of careless, insensitive decision-making ― including the casting [decision] ― does not consider the real-world impacts on Native Hawaiians, Hawaii residents, and other peoples of color when we are not made visible as real people with a full range of human experiences and emotions.”

“Rather we are characters for white people to try on and mimic in their quest to fulfill their own ignorant, arrogant, incorrect fantasies about Native Hawaiians and other peoples of color.”

Both Kelly and Ho’omanawanui are convinced that the film, which has already received mainstream attention, will once again show the masses a Westernized version of their native culture ― and they’re upset that non-Hawaiian people have taken control of a heroic narrative that belongs to a Native Hawaiian.

“There is no reason Native Hawaiians or other people of color shouldn’t be cast in this film,” Ho’omanawanui said. “Moreover, there is no reason they shouldn’t be included as writers, directors, producers and crew, and there’s equally no reason white people need to take the lead in telling this or any other story.”

As a filmmaker, Kelly thinks the only way to solve Hollywood’s problem with cultural appropriation is for prominent filmmakers and producers to first realize there is a problem. But as big-budget films that whitewash roles for minorities continue to roll out, it’s clear some filmmakers are not learning.

“It’s impossible to bridge a gap if the people in power pretend [that there is no problem] or deny that a gap exists,” she told HuffPost.

Kelly says she believes the average American audience would care about true Native Hawaiian narratives if native filmmakers were given a chance to represent their own people.

“The tough part is that most people would give a damn. Most people would care if they heard the truth. Most people do care about justice,” she said. “But they’re being entertained into not caring about it.”

And if Hollywood’s powers-that-be still aren’t convinced that the modern movie-watching audience is craving more authenticity in stories about people of color, the backlash trailing “Ni’ihau” should be proof enough.

This Kindergarten Teacher’s Students Can Dance Bachata Better Than Us

One Washington, D.C., teacher is passing on his love for salsa, bachata and more to his kindergarteners ― one dance step at a time.

KIPP DC Promise Academy teacher Edwin Sorto, who is an experienced salsa dancer, and his classroom of “dancing minis” are viral sensations thanks to the videos he uploads to the Mr. Sorto’s Class Facebook page.

“They work incredibly hard at both academics and dance and they absolutely deserve the recognition,” Sorto told USA Today in an article published Wednesday. “They’re proud of what they do and love to see people’s reactions, comments, and likes on their videos. Their parents are also incredibly supportive. My kids are great, and this is just one more thing that keeps them engaged in school.”

There’s almost no musical genre too difficult for these kiddos, thanks to Sorto. They’ve mastered bachata …

salsa ….

and merengue.

“It’s amazing the way they learn,” Sorto told Telemundo’s “¡Qué Noche! con Angélica y Raúl” last year. “The way they enjoy the music, just like we Latinos do.”

As if that weren’t enough, Sorto is also teaching his students how to read in Spanish. “They’re only 5 but reading with confidence,” he wrote in the caption of a video of two students reading out loud.

But these students’ claim to internet fame is certainly their sweet moves ― which go far beyond Latin genres.

“[I’m] now focused on building the next generation of dancers through my own students,” Sorto told USA Today.

Can we join in on these lessons?

There’s A Japanese Word For People Who Buy More Books Than They Can Actually Read

Book hoarding is a well-documented habit.

In fact, most literary types are pretty proud of the practice, steadfast in their desire to stuff shelves to maximum capacity. They’re not looking to stop hoarding, because parting with pieces of carefully curated piles is hard and stopping yourself from buying the next Strand staff pick is even harder. So, sorry Marie Kondo, but the books are staying.

The desire to buy more books than you can physically read in one human lifetime is actually so universal, there’s a specific word for it: tsundoku. Defined as the stockpiling of books that will never be consumed, the term is a Japanese portmanteau of sorts, combining the words “tsunde” (meaning “to stack things”) and “oku” (meaning “to leave for a while”).

We were reminded of the term this week, when Apartment Therapy published a primer for those looking to complete book-hoarder rehab. Several blogs have written on the topic before, though, surfacing new and interesting details about the word so perfect for book nerds everywhere.

While most who’ve written on the topic of tsundoku use the word to describe the condition of book hoarding itself, The LA Times used the term as a noun that describes the person suffering from book stockpiling syndrome, or “a person who buys books and doesn’t read them, and then lets them pile up on the floor, on shelves, and assorted pieces of furniture.”

Tsundoku has no direct synonym in English, Oxford Dictionaries clarified in a blog post, defining the word as “the act of leaving a book unread after buying it, typically piling it up together with other such unread books.” An informative subreddit provides even more context, explaining that “the tsundoku scale” ranges from just one unread book to a serious hoard. “Everyone is most likely to be ‘tsundokursed’ one way or the other,” it warns.

According to Quartz, tsundoku has quite a history. It originated as a play on words in the late 19th century, during what is considered the Meiji Era in Japan. At first, the “oku” in “tsunde oku” morphed into “doku,” meaning “to read,” but since “tsunde doku” is a bit of a mouthful, the phrase eventually condensed into “tsundoku.” And a word for reading addicts was born.

Speaking of addictions ― the term “bibliomania” emerged in England around the same time as “tsundoku.” Thomas Frognall Dibdin, an English cleric and bibliographer, wrote Bibliomania, or Book Madness: A Bibliographical Romance in the 1800s, outlining a fictional “neurosis” that prompted those suffering from it to obsessively collect books of all sorts.

Bibliomania has a dark past, documented more as a pseudo-illness that inspired real fear than a harmless knack for acquiring books we won’t have time to read. “Some collectors spent their entire fortunes to build their personal libraries,” Lauren Young wrote for Atlas Obscura. “While it was never medically classified, people in the 1800s truly feared bibliomania.”

Tsundoku seems to better capture the lighter side of compulsive book shopping, a word that evokes images of precariously stacked tomes one good breeze away from toppling over. While there’s no English equivalent quite as beautiful, no one’s stopping you from incorporating the Japanese word into your regular vocabulary.

“As with other Japanese words like karaoke, tsunami, and otaku, I think it’s high time that tsundoku enter the English language,” Open Culture wrote in 2014. “Now if only we can figure out a word to describe unread ebooks that languish on your Kindle. E-tsundoku? Tsunkindle?”

More Than 5 Million People Have Watched This Mom’s Powerful Spoken-Word Poem

A spoken-word poem has gone viral for its refreshing look at how difficult it is for many moms to be seen as more than mothers.

In a video of her spoken-word poem that the United Kingdom’s Channel 4 News posted on March 30, poet Hollie McNish explains that she only feels like an individual at night in the few hours she gets before she goes to sleep and wakes up to do it all over again.

“Cinderella’s clock strikes at midnight each time. My clock strikes loudly at nine,” she said in her poem, which has been viewed more than 5.8 million times as of Friday.

McNish rhythmically described the feelings of being described as “so-and-so’s mum” and the idea of mothers being “underpaid, overworked” as “snot rags” and “milk makers.” She also emphasized the strength of mothers, but stressed that crying every once in a while isn’t a sign of weakness.

“Someone said that moms are the rocks that never crumble,” she said. “I don’t think that’s true ‘cause I do.”

At the end of her poem, McNish reminds her fellow mothers that their “stories are many.” And the poem in its entirety proves that their stories are worth telling.

Batman Composer Hans Zimmer on Why He Connected More With Christian Bale’s Version Than Ben Affleck’s

Batman composer Hans Zimmer had a hard time connecting with Ben Affleck’s version of the DC superhero.

In an interview with Inverse, Zimmer admitted that it felt jarring to go from composing music for Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy to scoring Batman v Superman, as he felt like he was betraying everything Christian Bale had done with his take on the Dark Knight.

Zimmer spent months trying to come up with something for Ben Affleck to recapture that same connection he had with Bale’s Batman, but he ultimately couldn’t “quite shake that off.” Zimmer finds Bale’s performance to be more unresolved and about him witnessing his parents getting killed.

Front Row at Isabel Marant: VIP-ier Than Ever

PROJECT RUNWAY: Alicia Keys, Emily Ratajkowski, Liya Kebede, Jourdan Dunn and Caroline de Maigret figured among a noticeably bulked-up VIP contingent at the Isabel Marant show on Thursday night. There were also the power couples, including show producer Alex de Betak and his wife, Argentinian style icon Sofia Sanchez de Betak, who mingled with the guests.
In the countdown to lights down, de Betak chatted about a company he’s cofounded called Bureau Future, a digital creative atelier that develops contents for events produced by Bureau Betak as well as special projects. “This season, we did a soft start, which has been very successful, from projects for Alexander Wang to YSL to Yazbukey, with a few more fun things coming out for the end of the week,” he said.
Sanchez de Betak, who is working on the launch of Chufy, a travel-inspired brand working with artisans around the world, said the first collection will be dedicated to her homeland, with gaucho pants, riding boots and the like. She’s also releasing a book, published by Assouline, next month. “It’s a travel book about off-the-beaten-path special destinations like private houses.”
Keys, who had her other half, music producer Swizz Beatz, in tow, was more coy about what’s coming next. “Nothing to reveal yet,” she
