Theory Men’s Spring 2019

Well-known for his take on creating timeless wardrobe pieces with a cool minimalistic twist, Theory’s Martin Andersson’s spring collection keeps building on the same principles it has for the few past seasons: mobility and innovation.
“We asked ourselves, who is the Theory guy, and concluded that he’s into travel,” Andersson said at the brand’s spring presentation.
A capsule collection focusing on the idea of mobility and travel — packable seam-sealed blazers, travel Mac coats, water-resistant shirts and even a tracksuit — were all designed to be worn from the office straight to the airport.
Andersson has a knack for giving wardrobe staples a cool, minimalist élan via color and cut. His spring palette spanned forest greens, navy, khaki and bright pops of electric yellow and pink that were inspired from Dan Flavin’s light installations at Dia: Beacon.
A standout were the khaki pieces, such as khaki chinos with a contrast waistband paired with a bright pink sweater — a perfect blend of casual and sporty.

Theory Partners With Phaidon

NEW YORK — Architecture is always a reference point for Martin Andersson, the men’s creative director at Theory. But this time, he’s letting consumers in on the process.
On Tuesday night at Theory’s Meatpacking District store, Andersson presented his men’s pre-fall 2018 collection, which was situated next to Marvin Rand photographs that will be up in the store for a week or so. The late photographer is known for his graphic photographs of California architecture and landscape, which is documented in “California Captured,” a recently released book published by Phaidon.
“I’m really inspired by Los Angeles and all the facets of L.A.,” said Andersson. “It started with me looking at David Hockney paintings and some midcentury architecture, then we started thinking about the Theory man in L.A. and this whole little world came up. Then we had the opportunity to partner with Phaidon around this book, which captures exactly what influenced the collection.”
To further celebrate the partnership, Theory will hold a panel discussion at its Meatpacking District flagship on June 5 that will feature Andersson; Sam Lubell, who edited the book, and Giancarlo Valle, an architect. As retailers look for ways to connect with shoppers, panels are becoming a regularly utilized tool.

Johnny Galecki Says ‘Everybody’s Very Comfortable’ with The Big Bang Theory Ending in Season 12

Looks like The Big Bang Theory will be calling it a day soon!

During an appearance at the Television Critics Association winter press tour in Pasadena, California on Saturday, star Johnny Galecki told reporters that the popular CBS sitcom was most likely going to end in season 12.

“The only manner in which the cast has discussed wrapping has been that we’re all going to be very sad when that day comes,” Galecki, 42, said according to TVLine. “But I think at this point everyone’s very comfortable with 12 seasons being a good time to go home and see our families.”

The show — which is currently in the middle of it’s 11th season — also stars Jim Parsons, Kaley Cuoco and Mayim Bialik.

But although The Big Bang Theory may be ending soon, Young Sheldon is just getting started.

CBS announced on Saturday that they had decided to renew the show’s new spin-off sitcom — which centers around a 9-year-old version of Parson’s character — for a second season.

Young Sheldon has made a huge impact on our schedule in the short time it’s been on the air,” said CBS President Kelly Kahl in a statement according to Entertainment Weekly. “While the show’s DNA is clearly rooted in The Big Bang Theory, Young Sheldon has staked out its own place in the TV universe with a unique creative tone, brilliant writing and a gifted multi-generational cast. We can’t wait to see Chuck, Steve, Jim and Todd’s vision for how the Cooper family deals with Sheldon growing a year older…and smarter.”

EW also reported that Young Sheldon is currently ranked as the No. 1 new comedy this season and that it’s the No. 2 comedy on television overall, right behind The Big Bang Theory.

Lisa Kulson Steps Down From Theory

Lisa Kulson has resigned as women’s creative director of Theory, a post she has held since February 2014, WWD has learned.
Kulson joined Theory in 1997 as head designer and left in 2002 to create her own namesake line. She returned to Theory in 2012 as a consultant, and assumed her current role two years later. She took over responsibilities following the departure of Olivier Theyskens, who had been the brand’s artistic director.
Theory said Kulson is leaving to pursue other creative projects.
Known for her modern women’s collections, Kulson’s style has always reflected her love of travel and luxury, attention to details and technical skills.
Andrew Rosen, Theory’s chief executive officer and founder, expressed his “sincere gratitude and respect to Lisa for her commitment to the company and its evolution into a leading force in the marketplace. She is a true talent, and has a great eye. Lisa and I have worked closely together for many years, and she will always be a part of the Theory family.”
Rosen began working with Kulson when Theory launched its second collection. Asked to describe her aesthetic, he said she designs clothing with a modern sensibility. “She’s great with fits and fabrics and has a great eye stylistically.

Theory Men’s Spring 2018

Like many transplanted Europeans, new Theory designer Martin Andersson, previously of Cos, couldn’t resist the allure of Americana.
“I concentrated on the great American classics rooted in uniforms, sports and workwear,” Andersson said at the brand’s rooftop presentation, with Manhattan’s skyline as a backdrop.
The sporty pieces included sweatpants, hoodies and bombers in cotton, technical nylon and paper-thin leather. The workwear influences were clear on updated Dickies-inspired pants with a single pleat, as well as a “geeky” take on a railroad-stripe suit.
Punches of yellow and orange gave the mostly neutral lineup jolts of energy.
The tailored clothing offering had a subtle Fifties feel with the addition of the Gansevoort silhouette, a softly constructed suit with a natural shoulder and narrow pants. The new style came in a travel jersey and a technical nylon and polyester seersucker. Ultrathin anoraks worn under blazers enhanced the technical yet modern urban feel.
The lineup might come across as unexciting at first, but after a closer look, the minimalist approach felt like a perfect palate-cleanser.

‘Big Bang Theory’ Star Jim Parsons Marries Longtime Partner Todd Spiewak

“Big Bang Theory” star Jim Parsons and his longtime partner Todd Spiewak are officially married. A rep for the actor confirmed the news to People.

There aren’t many details about the wedding, but Page Six reports the nuptials took place at The Rainbow Room in New York City.

For the past couple years, Parsons has noted that he and Spiewak were never in a rush to tie the knot. When asked during a 2015 appearance on “The View” about whether he saw marriage in his future, he said, “I don’t know. I guess I kind of think so.”

“So much of my adult life, that wasn’t really a possibility, and I have grown more interested in the idea, and certainly supportive of the notion, and if my [getting] married would help the notion in general, even that would be enough to make me want to do it,” he said.

Parsons and Spiewak, a graphic designer, have been together for over 14 years. Last November, the 44-year-old star shared an Instagram photo on the couple’s anniversary and gushed about Spiewak in the caption.

“I met this guy (the one with the mic) 14 years ago today and it was the best thing that ever happened to me, no contest,” Parsons wrote. “One of his greatest gifts to me is that he no longer takes me to sing karaoke. Also, I believe this was a selfie with an actual camera, as our phones couldn’t do that back then hahaha! #todd #anniversary.”

Congrats to the happy couple!

Newbark and Theory Link for Footwear Collaboration

Los Angeles-based stylist sisters Maryam and Marjan Malakpour and their footwear brand Newbark have linked with Theory to design capsule collections beginning with a pre-fall collection launching next Thursday in Theory’s Melrose Avenue flagship.
“We met Andrew Rosen when we were selected as CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund finalists last year, so that’s how the opportunity came up, and we’ve been working on this for the last six months,” Maryam said.
The Malakpours took their core loafer and sandal styles and used Theory’s ready-to-wear fabrics and leathers such as red velvet, zebra print calf hair, denim and Army green cotton retailing for $ 264 to $ 345. The retailer already sells shoes from the regular Newbark collection.
The collaboration will launch with a two-week pop-up inside the Theory in Los Angeles before rolling out in other Theory stores. At Thursday night’s party, where hipster singer Cherry Glazerr will perform, guests will also be able to customize their shoes with one-of-a-kind Swarovski patches.
The sisters launched Newbark in 2009 with a folding leather travel flat, after growing tired of aching feet from traveling. “It’s like when your feet are barking it means they’re hurting, that’s where the name comes from,” Marjan said.
They expanded into a full footwear and accessories

Your ‘Big Bang Theory’ Faves Get Raises After Leads Take Salary Cut

Any way you put it, everyone on CBS’s “The Big Bang Theory” makes bank. But some cast members ― Jim Parsons, Johnny Galecki, Kaley Cuoco, Kunal Nayyar and Simon Helberg ― have a considerably larger slice of the pie, given that they’ve been around since the show started in 2007.

Amid contract negotiations for the upcoming Seasons 11 and 12, the five leads reportedly each took $ 100,000 in pay cuts from their $ 1 million per episode salaries to even the playing field with other series regulars Mayim Bialik and Melissa Rauch.

Up until this week, the negotiations were ongoing, with Bialk’s and Rauch’s status still unknown, but according to Deadline, the actresses have finalized deals that would keep them around for the two-season renewal.

The two started on the long-running sitcom in Season 3 and became series regulars the following season, earning an estimated $ 175,000–$ 200,000 per episode. However, given that Bialik and Rauch’s roles have considerably expanded in recent years, contract negotiations were prolonged as they both reportedly aimed to match the salaries of the five leads.

Under this new contract, Rauch and Bialik, the latter of whom has been nominated for four Emmys for her role, will likely earn $ 425,000–$ 500,000 per episode, Deadline reports, largely due to Parsons, Galecki, Cuoco, Nayyar and Helberg’s decision to spread the wealth. The new deals also reportedly contain a development component for both Bialik and Rauch.

“The Big Bang Theory” might’ve just dipped to a series low in ratings after its most recent episode, but rest assured, this show will outlive us all.

Mandy Moore Throws Cold Water On ‘Tangled’ And ‘Frozen’ Fan Theory

Sorry fans, Mandy Moore has outright rejected the theory that connects Disney’s 2010 animated feature “Tangled” with its 2013’s animated blockbuster “Frozen.”

Fans have theorized that “Frozen’s” king and queen of Arendelle were on their way to the wedding of Rapunzel and Flynn from “Tangled” when their ship sank and they died. Fans believe that’s why the newlywed couple make a cameo in “Frozen” as they are obligated to be at Elsa’s coronation ceremony.

It’s a rather disturbing theory and Moore, who voices Rupunzel in the Disney Channel’s new “Tangled” TV series, as well as the 2010 movie, was not having it.

“That’s a pretty morbid fan theory,” Moore said while looking slightly horrified in an interview with TVLine, published Friday. “It feels like someone is really reaching, like into ‘Lost’ territory or something.”

“There is no connection as far as I know,” she continued. But I don’t think there is any connection. No. But sure, people can imagine what they will all day. That’s their prerogative.”

The theory actually goes a step further and connects the sunken ship that appears in Disney’s the “Little Mermaid” as potentially belonging to to the king and queen of Arendelle.

It’s all very creative and the co-director of “Frozen,” Chris Buck, further connected films within the Disney universe when he participated in a Reddit AMA in August 2015.

According to Buck, the king and queen didn’t die on that ship. Rather, they washed up on the shore of a “jungle island,” where the queen gave birth to a baby boy. Together they all lived in a tree house before tragedy struck and the king and queen were eaten by a leopard. The baby boy was left to be “raised by gorillas.” If that sounds like the start to Disney’s “Tarzan,” it’s no coincidence that Buck also directed that movie and further helps cement the theory that all Disney films are somehow connected.

Johnny Galecki Comments On That Supposed ‘Big Bang Theory’ Trump Warning

The vanity card at the end of Thursday night’s episode of “The Big Bang Theory” was no bazinga.

At the close of the episode on the eve of the presidential inauguration, a card from creator Chuck Lorre flashed on the screen with lyrics to George Harrison’s song “Beware of Darkness” and a timely quote from Monty Python:

Run away! Run Away!

Monty Python

The card is largely viewed as an anti-Donald Trump message, especially since Lorre, an outspoken critic of Trump, has referenced the now-president in cards before

While stopping by Build Series to talk about his new horror movie “Rings,” actor Johnny Galecki, aka Leonard from “The Big Bang Theory,” said he didn’t see the card, but talked about Lorre’s character, calling him “generous” and “giving.”

“I know whatever he wrote, his heart’s in the right place,” said Galecki.

Though, the actor added, “We’re a comedy at the end of the day, and I think there’s a danger in making this show a political lightning rod, so we’re aware of that. Other people would do it better, anyway.”

While Galecki makes solid points, the comment that “other people would do it better” is debatable. After all, with everything going on in the world, it’d be pretty great to hear the “Soft Kitty” song right about now.

For everyone who needs to hear “Soft Kitty”:

This book consists of both expository and research articles solicited from speakers at the conference entitled “Arithmetic and Ideal Theory of Rings and Semigroups,” held September 22-26, 2014 at the University of Graz, Graz, Austria. It reflects recent trends in multiplicative ideal theory and factorization theory, and brings together for the first time in one volume both commutative and non-commutative perspectives on these areas, which have their roots in number theory, commutative algebra, and algebraic geometry. Topics discussed include topological aspects in ring theory, Prüfer domains of integer-valued polynomials and their monadic submonoids, and semigroup algebras. It will be of interest to practitioners of mathematics and computer science, and researchers in multiplicative ideal theory, factorization theory, number theory, and algebraic geometry.

A Ridiculous ‘Walking Dead’ Morse Code Theory Makes Too Much Sense

Even in the world of “The Walking Dead,” you gotta have a code. Who would’ve thought that code would be so literal?

Sunday’s episode of the show featured Negan and his goon squad coming to Alexandria to terrorize the residents and take half their stuff. Negan also brought Daryl, and Daryl apparently brought his ninja skills. That’s the theory anyway.

While watching the episode, some fans noticed how Daryl was acting super weird. Sure, he was just tortured for days and forced to listen to “Easy Street” on repeat, but fans think this was something more. Daryl seemed to be blinking a lot when Rick looked over at him. The theory now is that these blinks were Morse code.

OK. Whoa. Wait. C’mon. This is hogwash, right?

Remember: Negan almost immediately forbid Rick from speaking to Daryl. This would obviously be a way around that. There’s something else that’s even more convincing, however. Redditor radda explains:

What the what!?

Yup. A Morse code chart was prominently shown on the wall earlier in the episode.

Peep this, peeps:

And that has us feeling like:

If Daryl is sending Morse code, and that’s still a big if, Comicbook.com and various Redditors say it could be decoded as, “I EAST.”

Other guesses include “6 miles East,” “East of Hilltop,” or possibly a highway such as “I-30 East.” Whatever the actual translation, it would all mean one thing:

Daryl is telling Rick the location of Negan’s headquarters.

Was Daryl just tortured into weird head nods and blinks? Perhaps he still hears “Easy Street” in his head and he’s just bopping along. (That’s some catchy stuff after all.) Or maybe, just maybe, Rick now knows the location of Negan and the Saviors. Maybe he’ll follow through on his promise.

“The Walking Dead” airs Sunday at 9 p.m. ET on AMC.

After years of dating, our favorite “Big Bang” couple is finally going to consummate their relationship, aka engage in coitus, aka go “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine,” aka “The Force Awakens,” aka it’s “Terminator 2: Judgment Day.” In other words, they’re having sex.

Entertainment Weekly reports it’s all going down in the show’s Dec. 17 episode. The show taped the moment on Nov. 17, and the producer wanted to issue a statement on it before the news leaked.

Executive producer Steve Molaro said, “After over five years of dating, we felt the time was right for Sheldon and Amy to finally consummate their relationship, and we’re so excited for the audience to see the journey over the next several episodes,” according to Variety.

The announcement leaves us with a lot of unknowns. Mostly, uh … how? Amy broke Sheldon’s heart in the Season 8 finale, telling him she wanted a break. Does this mean the couple is getting back together? Is this a one-time thing? And this is Sheldon Cooper, remember. Uh … how?

In the original pilot for the show, Sheldon’s character supposedly did reveal he’s had sex before, and you can still find some clips online, but that script went through major changes. The Sheldon we know and love has always been pretty romantically inept. It was years before he even kissed Amy on the show. So coitus would be to go where no Sheldon Cooper has gone before.

‘Walking Dead’ Basically Confirms That Theory You Suspected

We’ve already learned who took Morgan’s peanut butter bar, but “The Walking Dead” answered even more questions in Sunday’s Season 6 episode, “JSS.”

(Warning! Spoilers! There is no sanctuary!)

First of all, yeah, it was the Wolves sounding that horn we heard in the season premiere. While Rick and the other survivors are out leading a zombie parade, the Wolves break into Alexandria and just start smashing people’s faces. The horn was from a truck they crashed into the walls during the assault.

Morgan made it back in time to kick the crud out of people with his bow staff, Napoleon Dynamite-style, but the real MVP of the episode was Carol. She finally gave up her goody-goody act this week by disguising herself as a Wolf and then completely destroying the attackers.

The most important part of the episode, however, was that it might’ve confirmed a popular theory fans have had online:

The theory: Enid is helping the Wolves.

Image: Tumblr

No! Just when Carl finally finds something he likes besides pudding! Typical, right?

Enid’s possible involvement with the Wolves has been speculated on for a while. As evidence, fans point to the fact that she has a mysterious past and doesn’t seem to share the same fear of the walkers as the other Alexandrians, she frequently goes outside the walls and, of course, there’s this Easter egg from Season 5 showing Carl looking at Enid’s comic:

“Wolf Fight.” Yeah, we see what you did there, AMC.

It turns out the title of the episode, “JSS” is actually Enid’s mantra: Just Survive Somehow. This week opens with a flashback showing Enid’s parents getting killed and then follows her through all the unpleasant JSS situations she gets herself into, one being a pretty graphic scene involving a turtle.

Let’s just say Bear Grylls would be proud. (And then he would probably drink a gallon of his own pee or something.)

(Oh yeah, that’s the good stuff.)

Enid is pretty nonchalant about the Wolves attacking the whole time. People are dying everywhere and she doesn’t even care. She just walks to Carl’s house to say goodbye because it’s suddenly time for her to peace out. Oh, and she has keys to the whole town, apparently.

When Carl asks her about the Wolves, she says they’re “just people” and that Alexandria is “too big to protect.” She goes on saying, “There are too many blind spots. That’s how we were able to …” Then Carl cuts her off.

Uh, what now? “We”? Let the girl finish, Carl!

Considering Enid’s motto, ”just survive somehow,” it makes perfect sense that she’d do whatever she could to stay alive. And if she encountered the Wolves outside the walls before, surviving may even include giving them intel and helping to bring down Alexandria.

Is Enid actually helping the Wolves? Only time will tell. But at this point, we can at least be pretty sure she’s just this kid in disguise:

“The Walking Dead” airs Sundays at 9:00 p.m. ET on AMC.

Update: An earlier version speculated that the photos Aaron found on the dead body were given to the Wolves, but actually they were photos that were previously lost.

Theory Men’s RTW Spring 2016

Knowing oneself is a virtue and Theory’s key to success is having a bead on the uniform dressing for the on-the-go metropolitan guy.

This season, vice president of men’s design Ben Stubbington added an array of minimalist yet sophisticated pieces to the Theory man’s wardrobe, including an ultralight, garment-dyed cotton poplin khaki blazer over a matching shirt and narrow slate gray chinos and an unlined trucker jacket in lightweight suede paired with tailored shorts.

Half of the models in the presentation were women in men’s clothes, which Stubbington said was because the looks flattered the women as much as the men.

While the aesthetic is clean and spare, there is something compelling and precise — which is what makes the Theory girl raid her boyfriend’s closet.

This Theory Perfectly Explains Why ‘The Hobbit’ Movies Were So Bad

Look, some of us liked “The Hobbit” trilogy. They’re not the perfect movies, but it’s a perfect adventure. Oh, and there’s a dragon who’s a total baller.

Other people, however, didn’t really appreciate the films. In fact, they really hated them.

And that’s how frenemies are made.

The criticism has been that the movies were overly exaggerated, there was too much CGI and it didn’t need to be stretched into a trilogy. Now, a fan theory suggests the films were actually meant to be a little ridiculous and needlessly drawn out.

The Theory: “The Hobbit” films were bloated with CGI and long-winded because they represent Bilbo’s own exaggerated retellings of his adventure.

Redditor Questionbdp posed the idea as “internal justification” for why the movies were a “disappointment,” and it actually makes sense. The Redditor explains:

What Bilbo actually experienced during his adventure with the Dwarves was probably far less significant and monumental than the movies make it out to be, because the movies show how Bilbo retells his adventures, not how he actually lived them.

The theory goes on to say Bilbo probably felt bummed after he returned from his adventure to find all the other Hobbits didn’t care and were selling off all his stuff. (You nasty Hobbitses!) Because of this, he makes his story larger than life and “events which only filled a small book turned into three separate movies.”

Commenters called the theory “brilliant,” and one even joked, “Lol, Peter Jackson, is that you?”

Speaking of Jackson, even he says “The Hobbit” movies were meant to be a different tone than “Lord of the Rings,” but could this be the reason why?

In J. R. R. Tolkien‘s original stories, Bilbo authors his own memoir, There and Back Again, so it’s entirely possible that he embellished a bit. The dude was pretty good at making stuff up when explaining how he escaped the Goblin tunnels to his Dwarf bros, after all. And how else would you explain Legolas running up a crumbling tower?

Image: YouTube/MakeAGif

Ugh … #SMH.

Jackson said he doesn’t have regrets when it comes to the films, so we’re thinking he either completely missed that Legolas scene, or perhaps there’s a bigger plan at work.

Please let there be a bigger plan at work.

Did ‘Game Of Thrones’ Showrunners Confirm That Major Jon Snow Theory?

Kit Harington may not be the best at keeping secrets, as his uncut hair at Wimbledon revealed over the weekend. But we expected a lot more secrecy from “Game of Thrones” showrunners Dan Weiss and David Benioff.

Spoiler alert for the “Game of Thrones” Season 5 finale.

As it turns out, the two writers practically confirmed a major Jon Snow fan theory months ago, and we all missed it. As fans of the show know, Harington’s Jon Snow was killed off in the “GoT” Season 5 finale. While this could mean Jon is simply dead, fans have speculated numerous ways the former Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch could eventually return. One of those theories is that Jon will warg into his direwolf Ghost, or that he possibly already warged in the final moments of the episode. While this is just a theory, Weiss and Benioff have already discussed it in public.

Earlier this year, Weiss, Benioff, Harington and John Bradley (Samwell Tarly) discussed the series during a roundtable at the Oxford Union. When a fan asked what other character Harington and Bradley would want to play on the series, Harington said, “I’d like to be a warg. I’d like to put myself into a wolf.” Yes, Harington actually said those words before we ever saw Jon Snow get stabbed.

Even more shocking is what Weiss said in response. “Two words for you: Season 6.” Either Weiss was just joking and playing into the fan theory, or he accidentally let a huge spoiler slip. Following the Season 5 finale, Harington flat out told Entertainment Weekly that he’s “dead” and “not coming back next season.” But that doesn’t necessarily mean we won’t see Jon outside of his physical body, whether that happens in Season 6 or possibly Season 7. Or perhaps it was just a cruel joke and Jon is really gone for good.

Information Theory: Coding Theorems for Discrete Memoryless Systems

Information Theory: Coding Theorems for Discrete Memoryless Systems

Information Theory: Coding Theorems for Discrete Memoryless Systems presents mathematical models that involve independent random variables with finite range. This three-chapter text specifically describes the characteristic phenomena of information theory. Chapter 1 deals with information measures in simple coding problems, with emphasis on some formal properties of Shannon’s information and the non-block source coding. Chapter 2 describes the properties and practical aspects of the two-terminal systems. This chapter also examines the noisy channel coding problem, the computation of channel capacity, and the arbitrarily varying channels. Chapter 3 looks into the theory and practicality of multi-terminal systems. This book is intended primarily for graduate students and research workers in mathematics, electrical engineering, and computer science.

Queueing Theory for Telecommunications

Queueing Theory for Telecommunications

Queueing theory applications can be discovered in many walks of life including; transportation, manufacturing, telecommunications, computer systems and more. However, the most prevalent applications of queueing theory are in the telecommunications field. Queueing Theory for Telecommunications: Discrete Time Modelling of a Single Node System focuses on discrete time modeling and illustrates that most queueing systems encountered in real life can be set up as a Markov chain. This feature is very unique because the models are set in such a way that matrix-analytic methods are used to analyze them. Queueing Theory for Telecommunications: Discrete Time Modelling of a Single Node System is the most relevant book available on queueing models designed for applications to telecommunications. This book presents clear concise theories behind how to model and analyze key single node queues in discrete time using special tools that were presented in the second chapter. The text also delves into the types of single node queues that are very frequently encountered in telecommunication systems modeling, and provides simple methods for analyzing them. Where appropriate, alternative analysis methods are also presented. This book is for advanced-level students and researchers concentrating on engineering, computer science and mathematics as a secondary text or reference book. Professionals who work in the related industries of telecommunications, industrial engineering and communications engineering will find this book useful as well.

Algebraic Structures and Operator Calculus: Representations and Probability Theory Volume 1

Algebraic Structures and Operator Calculus: Representations and Probability Theory Volume 1

This series presents some tools of applied mathematics in the areas of proba- bility theory, operator calculus, representation theory, and special functions used currently, and we expect more and more in the future, for solving problems in math- ematics, physics, and, now, computer science. Much of the material is scattered throughout available literature, however, we have nowhere found in accessible form all of this material collected. The presentation of the material is original with the authors. The presentation of probability theory in connection with group represen- tations is new, this appears in Volume I. Then the applications to computer science in Volume II are original as well. The approach found in Volume III, which deals in large part with infinite-dimensional representations of Lie algebras/Lie groups, is new as well, being inspired by the desire to find a recursive method for calcu- lating group representations. One idea behind this is the possibility of symbolic computation of the matrix elements. In this volume, Representations and Probability Theory, we present an intro- duction to Lie algebras and Lie groups emphasizing the connections with operator calculus, which we interpret through representations, principally, the action of the Lie algebras on spaces of polynomials. The main features are the connection with probability theory via moment systems and the connection with the classical ele- mentary distributions via representation theory. The various systems of polynomi- als that arise are one of the most interesting aspects of this study.

Live Without Pain: A New Theory on What’s Wrong With You and How to Fix It.

This is the US version, UK version also available. Do you have an illness or injury that just won’t heal? Do you suffer from unexplained aches, pains, stiffness, or fatigue that won’t go away, no matter what you try? The culprit may literally be right under your nose or hanging around your neck. Simon King explains his theory, based on careful observation, that many necklaces, rings, watches, piercings, and dental work affect your sensory nervous system and muscle reflexes – whether you can feel anything happening or not! Based on a well-known but under-appreciated mechanism called ‘Proprioception,’ Live without Pain reveals how many common items activate proprioceptive mechanisms which leave you vulnerable to pain, and how you can remedy these without drugs, surgery or exercises. It offers individuals and health practitioners alike simple solutions that build health; sometimes resolving even long-term health issues in the process. ‘Big Bang Theory’ Recap: Penny’s Married?!

The problem with big swings is sometimes you hit a home run and other times strike out. Maybe a football metaphor would be more appropriate for tonight’s “Big Bang Theory.” The problem with Hail Mary passes is sometimes you complete and score a touchdown and other times the ball lands yards away from the receiver. Bringing all the characters together for what felt like a big Thanksgiving episode and then making Penny married on top of all that felt like a big swing Hail Mary combination — and it didn’t hit a grand slam or reach the end zone. That’s not to say the episode didn’t have its highlights. It just didn’t all come together.

Do I find it plausible that when Penny and Zach were dating they had a drunken holiday in Vegas and got married by a fake Elvis? Yes, I find that entirely plausible. Do I find it plausible that Penny would think Vegas weddings aren’t real? Absolutely not. The entire premise of the episode’s A-story is comical but broad and flimsy. One would have to be really dumb and have little cultural awareness for this to ring true. It’s another example of the writers stretching her stupidity to its breaking point, and while it can be funny at times, it ruins her credibility. As frustrating and neurotic as Leonard is (and he is very), Penny doesn’t have much of a leg to stand on when she gets angry. Her mistake is so hair brained and epic, any anger comes across as false. Paired with Leonard’s extreme reaction, it equals a whole bunch of off-putting behavior.

This is all cut somewhat when Zach arrives, as he’s humorously less intelligent than everyone else (and he gets a few good jokes in). But it’s not enough. By the episode’s end, it was a lot of high concept story with little payoff. Penny and Leonard’s reconciliation is swift in the spirit of the holiday — and true to “Big Bang Theory” — but vague and inconsequential. Will Penny and Leonard get married someday? Probably. Did this episode bring them closer together or farther apart as a couple? It did neither.

Meanwhile, various shenanigans are happening on the fringes of this story. In a somewhat meandering, yet eventually humorous subplot, Sheldon starts out the episode dreading going to Wolowitz’s mother’s house for Thanksgiving. (He compares his plight to African American slavery in a series of three jokes all told in poor taste.) But he ends up bonding with Bernadette’s father Mike over football and making fun of Howard. It’s fun to watch Parsons play drunk and see Sheldon’s gridiron knowledge again (introduced in season three episode six). On the other hand, the humor at the expense of Howard’s daddy issues is more problematic, as it undermines the superb episodes from last season that tackled his problems. Bernie’s father as the straight man among all the crazy was a good touch. The show mined a lot of comedy out of throwing him into that dynamic. Amy’s reaction to Sheldon’s slap on the butt too was a winning moment, thanks to Mayim Bialik.

Then you have Raj cooking and Howard’s mother upstairs and the episode begins to feel stuffed. These runners were tolerable and worked once or twice, but made the half-hour feel scattered. Putting all the characters in one place and letting the sparks fly should have worked like gangbusters for “Big Bang,” but its aspirations ended up being the episode’s biggest failure. Little moments and jokes broke through but this wasn’t up to par with stronger recent installments. But sometimes Thanksgiving can be dysfunctional, so who can blame them? Now let’s go throw around the pigskin … as long as this isn’t a kosher household.

“The Big Bang Theory” airs Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET on CBS.

‘Big Bang Theory’ Recap: Sheldon Vs. Newhart Round Two

In an old-school sweeps move, “Big Bang” pulled a bit of stunt casting and brought back TV legend Bob Newhart to reprise his role as the gangs’ beloved childhood icon Professor Proton. The Professor, AKA Arthur Jeffries, is a former kids’ science show host that was last seen in May being hired by Sheldon and Leonard for some quality time. Newhart went on to win his much-deserved first Emmy award for the role and his performance in tonight’s episode only reinforces his merit. The man’s comic timing and line delivery at 84 has clearly not waned and “Big Bang” manages to use him in a mostly constructive way.

At the top of “The Proton Displacement”, Sheldon, Leonard and Amy run into Jeffries at the pharmacy on “Restock the Medicine Cabinet” day. Sheldon is thrilled and in a move foreshadowing his behavior to come he decides he won’t bother him … he’ll talk to him instead. Immediately Newhart’s presence is felt, not only in the audience’s retro applause for the great actor, but in his perfectly measured responses. If they were going to make the man a recurring cast member today, I would be very on board. Need further convincing? The punchline before the credits is just him sighing. And it works. Despite the abundance of old jokes, Newhart uses his age to his advantage and provides a perfectly exasperated foil to Sheldon’s antics.

The Professor Proton plot that follows concerns the aging scientist asking Leonard for help with a research paper and Sheldon getting jealous. Yes, Sheldon repeatedly asking if he’s annoying is annoying, but the writers carefully dole out Sheldon’s worst tendencies. They then counter those tendencies with the others getting genuinely mad and/or Dr. Cooper failing marvelously. Amy almost confronts Sheldon about his annoying personality, and though she doesn’t, we can see that she so badly wants to. In contrast, Professor Proton has no problem confronting him and shutting the door in his face. All of this leads to Newhart’s character asking Leonard why he puts up with Sheldon. Though it’s been addressed before, it was great to see the show hit this question head on again. It feels earned following Sheldon’s misbehavior and stirs some true emotion from Leonard.

Sheldon responds to Professor Proton’s rejection by calling up a TV scientist of his own. In a clever meta turn, Dr. Cooper enlists Bill Nye the Science Guy. Fresh off a spin on “Dancing With the Stars”, Nye has been making it a habit of turning up on broadcast TV recently. The show gets a lot of mileage playing their fictional TV scientist off the real TV scientist. The Nye of “Big Bang” was inspired by Professor Proton apparently, but Newhart’s character only sees it as a ripoff act. The jokes around this premise were among the best of the episode (much better than most of the old jokes made about Newhart previously) and this may have been the 84-year-old’s best scene of the half hour. It also gives the show an opportunity to take Sheldon down a notch when his plan to use Nye fails miserably.

Round two of Sheldon versus Newhart wraps up with Professor Proton coming to understand Sheldon, apologizing to him and then not getting mad when he finds out that Sheldon hacked into his email account. That last part didn’t come across as believable to me, but the episode would have had to be twice as long to unpack that move. Sheldon returns the favor by calling his paper “inspired” and the two plan their revenge on Bill Nye. How sweet.

Over in our B story that doesn’t involve TV legends and kids’ show scientists, Howard hijacks Raj’s girls’ night. Howard’s oblivious eye to his best friend’s suffering felt unusually cruel — and bordering on Sheldon-esque behavior. Wolowitz really walks all over him and it’s pretty painful for most of the episode. (Also, that Jewish joke. Yikes.) Thankfully, Howard comes to and they remember why they’re best friends. This story does yield some hilarious moments though, such as Penny’s delightful inability to use glue and Amy declaring Howard and Raj will have sex before she and Sheldon. As for those light saber belt buckles? I wouldn’t be surprised if they show up in stores by Christmas.

“Big Bang” followed up one of its strongest episodes with another solid entry. Any episode that includes Bob Newhart, Bill Nye and electronic light saber belt buckles is alright by me. It didn’t feel like a major step forward in character or plot development, but it was a fun outing that didn’t jeopardize real emotion. We’re in desperate need of a funny Penny A-story I’d say, but with Newhart around who’s going to complain?
