Why Chris Hemsworth Doesn’t Like Thor: The Dark World

Chris Hemsworth has revealed why he doesn’t like Thor: The Dark World.

Speaking to GQ, Hemsworth briefly touched on what didn’t work in The Dark World, saying the 2013 movie didn’t quite take enough risks and felt a bit too “familiar” as a result.

“The first one is good, the second one is meh,” Hemsworth said. “What masculinity was, the classic archetype—it just all starts to feel very familiar. I was so aware that we were right on the edge.”

Hemsworth previously discussed why he pushed for a major tonal shift with the third film, Thor: Ragnarok. Seeing the slightly poor response The Dark World was receiving, Hemsworth knew a changed was needed and credited Ragnarok director Taika Waititi for successfully bringing about this change.

Thor: The Dark World Director to Helm Sopranos Prequel Movie

Alan Taylor, known for his work on Game of Thrones, Lost, Thor: The Dark World and Terminator Genisys, is reportedly set to direct a prequel film of The Sopranos.

According to The Wrap, Taylor has signed on to direct The Many Saints of Newark, a prequel film written and produced by David Chase, the creator of The Sopranos. Taylor won the 2007 Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Directing for The Sopranos’ sixth season episode “Kennedy and Heidi.”

The story is set in the 1960s during the peak of riots caused by racial tension in Newark, New Jersey. Various characters from the Sopranos are expected to appear in the film, though its cast will naturally be entirely new due to the age differences.

Thor Gets a Beautiful but Imperfect Sendoff

Jason Aaron and Russell Dauterman’s “Death of the Mighty Thor” storyline lived up to its name in The Mighty Thor #705, with Jane Foster making the ultimate sacrifice in order to save Asgardia from the Mangog. Now all that’s left is for the Odinson and his fellow gods to pick up the pieces and mourn a fallen hero. The result is a heartfelt, bittersweet series finale, though one that wraps Jane’s story on a conflicting note.

While Jane’s own arc as a frail human-turned-goddess of thunder has been the driving force of this series, The Mighty Thor has also explored how this upstart Thor has impacted the gods of Asgardia. With Jane dead, that latter element comes into focus here. Both Odin and his son face their own emotional roller coasters as they grapple with the knowledge that Jane did what no god was capable of. As ever, worthiness and the responsibilities of godhood weigh heavily on Aaron’s Thor run. This issue succeeds well in casting Odin as a more sympathetic figure, a welcome change from the blustering, antagonistic force he’s been throughout most of Aaron’s run. As for the Odinson, this issue succeeds in casting him as a man both embracing his inner hero and one tempered by recent tragedies.

Thor: Ragnarok Remains Box Office Champ in 2nd Weekend

Thor: Ragnarok held strong in first place during its second weekend at the North American box office, earning an estimated $ 56.6 million.

Marvel Studios’ latest, which had the fourth-largest opening of 2017 last weekend, now has a domestic total of $ 211.6 million, eclipsing the earnings of the first Thor movie and Thor: The Dark World. Additionally, Ragnarok’s global total now stands at $ 650 million, making it the twelfth consecutive film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to soar past the $ 500 million mark in worldwide earnings.

Meanwhile, this weekend brought with it the debut of Daddy’s Home 2, which placed second with an estimated $ 30 million, and received an “A-” CinemaScore from moviegoers. The Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg-led Christmas comedy’s opening weekend didn’t quite reach the heights of the original film, which debuted in 2015 to $ 38.7 million.

Beta Ray Bill Was Dropped From Thor: Ragnarok

Beta Ray Bill almost featured in the latest Thor movie, Thor: Ragnarok.

In an interview with CraveOnline, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige revealed the character initially had a cameo in the film. However, because his appearance was too quick, Feige didn’t think it did justice to Beta Ray Bill. So, he was ultimately cut from the movie entirely.

“There was a Beta Ray Bill, but it was so quick that you would have the same complaints that you have now,” Feige said. “He was in it a little bit more and it just didn’t do justice. And the feeling is, if you can’t do it justice, do it later.”

Thor: Ragnarok Director Won’t Whitewash Akira Movie

Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi confirmed to IGN that he has been approached about directing a live-action feature film adaptation of Akira, but he was coy and non-committal about whether he would.

He confirmed there had been “talks” but alternated between speaking about the project in the past and present tense even as he also offered his thoughts on his approach to adapting the material and casting the film.

When I asked Waititi if he was going to direct Akira, he replied, “I am — that was more or less a rumor. There was, I mean, I was in talks to do that, for sure, and something that I was very passionate about — am passionate about.”

How Thor: Ragnarok’s Valkyrie Cuts Thor Down to Size

Valkyrie makes her Marvel Cinematic Universe debut later this year in Thor: Ragnarok, and IGN had an opportunity to speak with star Tessa Thompson this past weekend at San Diego Comic-Con about her role in the upcoming film, including her dynamic with Chris Hemsworth’s Thor.

“She cuts him down so to size, and that’s so exciting because Chris Hemsworth is a big person,” Thompson told IGN. “To be able to cut someone down to size and you can’t even look them in the eye is just so fantastic.”

Thompson went on to jokingly add that “it’s good because as an actor sometimes when you’re tasked to do something on-screen you can kind of do it in daily life, so I just like to do that to Chris all the time.”

You Have to Watch Thor: Ragnarok to Understand Avengers 3

One of the biggest questions coming out of Avengers: Infinity War’s first footage is, “What the heck is Thor doing floating around in space?” IGN got a chance to catch up with Thor: Ragnarok star Chris Hemsworth at San Diego Comic-Con, where he confirmed the answer to that question will be revealed in the upcoming Thor movie.

“I think you’ll have to watch our film first to understand what Avengers is about,” he teased.

Watch our full interview with Hemsworth below:

Hemsworth also spoke to the experience of filming with characters like the Guardians of the Galaxy for the first time in Infinity War, saying, “We read the script for the first time and I think all of us had the same sort of excitement about who we’re going to meet, who we’re going to hang with, and a lot of those guys I hadn’t even met in person let alone on screen, so it felt like a sort of fanboy experience.”
