Murderous Religious Cult Leader Dispatched ‘Death Angels’ to Punish Those Who Crossed Him

During a secretive reign of terror and killing carried out by his followers across Miami in the 1980s, a charismatic cult leader appeared to revel in his ability to get away with it all.

“Are you some kind of fool?,” Yahweh Ben Yahweh, the founder and leader of the murderous Nation of Yahweh who called himself “the black God,” said malevolently during a moment of preaching. “You can’t kill God.”

To those who still tried to cross him, “he sent out the ‘death angels,’” former FBI agent Herb Cousins says in the next episode of People Magazine Investigates: Cults, which airs Monday on Investigation Discovery (9 p.m. ET), an exclusive clip of which is shown above.

The audio of Yahweh Ben Yahweh depicts the sinister edge that eventually overtook the religious group, which began by offering Biblical inspiration to young African Americans during a period of racial tension and won endorsements from local leaders for tangible steps to clean up drug-riddled and dilapidated properties around South Florida.

But the group devolved into a cult of personality with an increasingly strong-armed leader who ruled by intimidation — and then violence.

Yahweh Ben Yahweh — the former Hulon Mitchell Jr. — was charged in 1990 along with 15 of his followers with multiple counts of murder, attempted murder, racketeering, arson and extortion. In 1992 he and six of those followers were found guilty, with the leader himself sentenced to 18 years for conspiracy to commit murder.

• For more on the Nation of Yahweh and its charismatic leader’s murderous reign, watch Monday’s People Magazine Investigates: Cults at 9 p.m. ET on Investigation Discovery.

The first killing in 1981 targeted a former sect member who challenged Yahweh Ben Yahweh’s teachings and left to form a splinter group with others. When the defector returned to seek out the leader at a warehouse remade by the group as its so-called Temple of Love, he was beaten by members of the leader’s security team, some of whom carried stainless steel machetes.

“I saw a hammer,” a witness to the beating, former follower Kahlil Amani, says in the excerpt above. “He’s just being pounded out on the floor. … I still could hear him breathing with that sound of death.”

Sometime later in the Everglades, “we find a head and body pieces,” former Assistant U.S. Attorney David DiMaio says on the episode. “They were sending a message with this killing.”

Other defectors, including a woman named Mildred Banks, went to police with their suspicions. She and her husband were then attacked in their home; her husband was killed, and she was left for dead but survived and entered witness protection under a new name.

“They’re going to cut his head off,” Banks recalled of the attackers, she says on the episode.

“She was in fear for her life,” PEOPLE Senior Editor Alicia Dennis says in the excerpted clip. “God was helping them kill their enemies.”

In another audio viewers will hear on the episode, Yahweh Ben Yahweh asserts of his power: “If you don’t love me … you’re a snake.”

Says Cousins, the former FBI agent who slapped the handcuffs on Yahweh Ben Yahweh upon his arrest: “To do what he did, and the way he did it, I personally believe that he was just plain evil.”

The People Magazine Investigates: Cults episode on the Nation of Yahweh airs Monday (9 p.m. ET) on Investigation Discovery.

Billie Lourd Remembers Carrie Fisher While ‘Sending All My Love’ to Those Struggling on Mother’s Day

Billie Lourd has an uplifting message for anybody out there who’s lost their mother: You’re not alone.

On the second Mother’s Day since her mom Carrie Fisher died, the 25-year-old reached out to anybody “having a less than perfect Mother’s Day today.”

“We are not alone. Sending all my love and strength to anyone who needs it. 🙏🏼,” Lourd continued, sharing her message alongside a loving snapshot of her and Fisher.

In the photo, the American Horror Story: Cult actress sits beside her mother on a tiny chair, while Fisher wraps her arms around her daughter.

Fisher was flying from London to Los Angeles on Dec. 23, 2016, when she went into cardiac arrest. Paramedics removed her from the flight and rushed her to a nearby hospital, where she was treated for a heart attack. She died in the hospital four days later.

Before her mother’s death, both mother and daughter were able to work together on Fisher’s last film, Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

Commemorating the one-year anniversary of her mother’s death last December, Lourd and her father, Bryan Lourd, took a special trip to see the northern lights in Norway.

“My momby had an otherworldly obsession with the northern lights, but I never got to see them with her,” Lourd wrote next to two pictures showing green flashes lighting up the sky. “We journeyed to northern Norway to see if we might ‘see the heavens lift up her dark skirts and flash her dazzling privates across unworthy irises.’ And she did.”

“I love you times infinity,” she concluded.

Everyone Missed Something In Those New ‘Game Of Thrones’ Photos

Few things are as great as knowing something before you’re supposed to. It’s the same feeling you get from yelling at Steve on “Blue’s Clues” about what the clues actually mean. He’s giving you that blank stare, not because he’s actually staring into a camera lens and can’t hear you, but because you’re a total boss.

Jon Snow will never have that feeling. Jon Snow knows nothing. However, we might know something new about him and where “Game of Thrones” is going. It’s all because of this photo:

After HBO released Season 7 photos, including this one of Sam and Gilly, fans have been frantically trying to decode what Gilly is reading.

Now, apparently, they have.

As reported by “Game of Thrones” fan site Winter is Coming, Redditor itsjayrr pointed out that the page seems to be out of George R.R. Martin’s book The World of Ice & Fire, which tells the history of Westeros. The passage talks about Azor Ahai, the person who’s supposed to save everyone.

See it here:

Upon our own inspection, it does seem like key words in the image do match up with the text from the book.

On the page from The World of Ice & Fire, we hear about “The Long Night,” a time when winter supposedly lasted for a generation. Then, a hero known as Azor Ahai came along to help rid the land of the White Walkers. A prophecy tells of the return of Azor Ahai, sometimes used interchangeably with the term The Prince That Was Promised. Either way, this legendary character is seen as the person who will ultimately save Westeros.

The paragraph further emphasizes the importance of the prophecy within the “Game of Thrones” universe and makes us wonder: who will be Azor Ahai?

Is it Dany? Is it Jon Snow? Someone else? The debate can go on and on.

Kit Harington told HuffPost that he didn’t care if his character, Jon Snow, is the Prince or not, which is probably for the best. If the page Gilly’s perusing is from The World of Ice & Fire, Snow has bigger problems.

Something is coming to “Game of Thrones,” and it ain’t winter …

It’s Ice Spiders.

Oh what a tangled ice web we weave …

Following the revelation about the book, we checked out our own copy of The World of Ice & Fire.

When you look at the specific section of text, it’s easy to notice that the rest of the page has a reference to the White Walkers using giant ice spiders. There’s even a picture of White Walkers with the spiders. If the book Gilly is using is some version of The World of Ice & Fire, continued reading will reveal the same.

Giant ice spiders have already been mentioned on the show. Old Nan told Bran about them back in Season 1, saying the White Walkers’ spiders were as big as hounds.

Are the spiders coming? Time will tell.

But, yeah, duh, why not?

If this book on the show is being looked to as fact, Sam and Gilly better hope they have Hagrid from “Harry Potter” coming to help. That dude loves spiders. Ron will probably want to stay home.

Ice spiders are coming.

“Game of Thrones” Season 7 premieres July 16.

What Is Steve Bannon Hiding Under All Of Those Shirts?

If layering is an art form, we wouldn’t exactly call Steve Bannon a modern day Picasso

Donald Trump’s embattled chief strategist has a habit of layering multiple shirts on top of one another. And we don’t mean something normal, like an undershirt and a sweater. We mean two button-down collared shirts. Over one another.

Bannon, who was reportedly just pushed off the National Security Council in part by the president’s son-in-law Jared Kushner and may have even threatened to quit the White House, has been called out for this strange style habit, both on Twitter…

…and in horrified headlines:

That got us wondering, though: Does anyone else actually do this? After a bit of digging and trying to wrap our minds around the whole thing, we did find at least one other iteration of this look: On J.Crew’s website, no less!

For what it’s worth, even in its trendiest form, the whole buttoned shirt over a buttoned shirt still looks pretty ridiculous. Plus, the shirt from J.Crew is “sherpa lined,” more like a jacket-type garment and therefore slightly less offensive.

Esquire expertly compared Bannon’s look to a famous scene from “Friends,” in which Joey puts on all of Chandler’s clothes. Here’s hoping Bannon isn’t also going commando, eh?

The mag also assured its readers that this is not a trend they need to worry about adopting anytime soon.

“This is not something that anyone except for Steve Bannon does,” they wrote.

Fashion blogger Ryan Dziadul expressed a similar, if not slightly less judgmental sentiment. “I’m all for fashion experimentation, breaking the so-called rules, and wearing what you want to wear,” he told The Huffington Post. “But wearing two button-down shirts at the same time is just weird. It just seems so…uncomfortable, and not to mention time-consuming.”

Dziadul’s advice to Bannon?

“If you’re desperate to layer, add a scarf,” he said. “But then again, Steve Bannon doesn’t seem like the kind of guy who minds weirding people out.”

All in all, the style just seems incredibly unnecessary, unless Bannon is hiding something under all those layers. Like, say, information about Russia? A dart board with Kushner’s face on it?

Like many other things in the Trump administration, the world may never know the truth.

Want to Buy Green Beauty? Here’s What All Those Buzzwords Mean

In recent years, the trend towards green beauty has transitioned from “super crunchy” to “majorly mainstream,” with huge retailers including Target and Nordstrom expanding their natural beauty sections to keep up with demand. But how do you know if that natural beauty product you’ve picked up is really as good for you as the label indicates? Does “organic” automatically mean healthy, and who even ensures that all the claims are accurate? The FDA doesn’t implement much strict regulation about what harmful ingredients can’t be used in cosmetics, so it’s up to consumers to sift through the thousands of products on the market to figure out what’s actually good for us.

“Sadly, we are on our own when it comes to finding beauty products (and food for that matter!) that are truly safe,” RMS beauty founder Rose-Marie Swift told PeopleStyle. From dozens of different marketing terms to ingredients you probably can’t pronounce, it can feel overwhelming to find a product you can feel good about. So to cut through the clutter, we talked to some of the biggest experts in green beauty to break down exactly what all the terms and buzzwords you can’t stop hearing really mean.

What does it mean to be a certified organic beauty product?

Just because a product is labeled “organic” doesn’t necessarily mean it really is. “As part of the National Organic Program, you have to have a minimum content of 70 percent organic ingredients to get a ‘Made With Organic’ claim on the label,” said Tracey Favre, director of Quality Assurance International Inc. To be in the big leagues and earn an official UDSA seal, a product goes under even more scrutiny.

“For the USDA seal, you have to have 95 percent or greater organic ingredients, and that extra 5 percent can’t be any ingredient that is listed as not allowed under the National Organic Program,” she added. So what about all those other products claiming to be organic? Stay wary – what you see may not be exactly what you think you’re getting. “The USDA doesn’t have jurisdiction over labeling claims on personal care products (they only do on the agricultural ingredients), so you really need to look for those marks to give you confidence of what you’re getting,” Favre said. “That is really key for consumers to understand.”

What about all-natural beauty?

Although there is no official government organization that oversees the natural beauty market or pinpoints a specific definition for it, many brands go through third parties to get certification. “For us, natural means choosing the purest and best forms of the most effective, nature-derived ingredients available,” said Tata Harper, who created her own namesake natural skincare brand.

Buy It! Tata Harper Clarifying Moisturizer, $ 105; sephora.com

According to Harper, the term “natural” in beauty means the complete formula is 100 percent synthetic free. “I thought consumer products were all tested and strictly regulated, and it was really shocking to learn that wasn’t the case,” she told us.

RELATED PHOTOS: Editors’ Picks: Sustainable/Eco-Friendly Items

Since there isn’t a specific regulating body for natural products, Harper turns to Ecocert, an organization that works to specifically certify ingredients as natural. “Getting certified is optional, but it’s what we do to give our customers more clarity,” she said. Read a product’s website and label closely to see how natural the product you’re using actually is.

Buy It! RMS Beauty Magic Luminizer, $ 38; sephora.com

I’ve also been hearing about this thing called clean beauty. What’s that?

Like natural beauty products, for “clean” products, there is no official body by the government to regulate what’s what. But brands looking to reputably claim a “clean” designation get certified by a third party organization to give consumers confidence in what they’re buying.

“Clean safe, non-toxic and verified by a third party,” C2 California Clean co-founder Christine Falsetti told us. “A lot of things that are clean are also green. When I go in the shower, it all washes off into the ecosystem, so if you think about the larger footprint you have, it’s important.”

Buy It! C2 California Clean Advanced Hyaluronic Hydrating Primer, $ 105; amazon.com

So what’s the difference between “clean” and “natural,” then? “I like to think of poison ivy and poison oak – that is something that is naturally occurring and beautiful in nature, but you’re not going to rub that on your body,” Falsetti said. “Or other things, like natural talc, can still cause allergic reactions in a lot of people, so that isn’t considered ‘clean.’”

What ingredients should I be wary of if I see them on an ingredient deck?

First and foremost, if anything on an ingredient list includes the words sulfates and parabens (which are used as artificial preservatives in cosmetics), it’s not green. “They have possible links to cancer and reproductive issues, and even though the link isn’t fully proven, there is enough doubt that we aren’t comfortable using it,” said Lanolips founder Kirsen Carriol.

Another big one to look out for: fragrance. “A lot of people use the word fragrance to mask bad ingredients in the product,” said Vert Beauty owner and makeup artist Amanda Hume. “Fragrance is a big red flag because you can hide a lot of things in it,” Farelli added. “Companies are allowed to use this term to hide the combination of other chemicals used in the ‘fragrance.’”

Mineral oil feels moisturizing on the skin, but in reality, speeds up aging. “It doesn’t penetrate the skin so it seals it and creates a barrier,” Hume said. “This doesn’t allow the skin to breathe (which is an important function of that organ) so it slows down the process of normal cell development which results in premature aging.”

Buy It! Savor Beauty Truffle Face Cream, $ 74; savorbeauty.com

What’s a good place to get started if I want to go green?

Don’t feel pressure to throw out all the beauty products you own and go all in right off the bat. “I think the best place to start is with products you use daily – whichever they are,” Harper said. “Say you use moisturizer daily but you don’t wash your hair daily. Start with moisturizer. Make a personal commitment and take your time finding the best things for you.”

Are you going green in your beauty routine? Tell us how in the comments below.

New Musical Aims To Speak To Those Rattled By ‘Social Injustice’

Broadway playwright and novelist Marc Acito and Grammy-nominated songwriter Amy Engelhardt are teaming up for a new musical project with a socially-conscious slant.

The pair have written a new musical, “Bastard Jones,” that is aiming for a spring premiere at The Cell in New York. The comedy is based on The History of Tom Jones, Henry Fielding’s 18th century novel which follows “an outsider’s quest for acceptance.” The book’s titular character, played by Albert Finney in the 1963 film, “Tom Jones,” is repeatedly rejected for being illegitimate. Both Acito and Engelhardt feel that plot point will particularly resonate among contemporary audiences given the struggles the LGBTQ community and other minority groups are facing under President Donald Trump’s administration.

“In 1749, being illegitimate made you a second-class citizen. We’re channeling our rage at social injustice into a door-slamming sex farce,” Engelhardt, who likened the music she’s written for the show to “Candide, Spring Awakening and Meat Loaf,” told The Huffington Post. Added Acito, “Substitute any oppressed minority with the word ‘bastard’ and it’s the same story, different characters.”

The writers have launched a GoFundMe campaign in an effort to cover production costs. They’re also planning to donate all royalties and proceeds from the show to Cyndi Lauper’s True Colors Fund, an advocacy group for homeless LGBTQ youth.

Acito, who wrote the book for the 2015 Broadway musical, “Allegiance,” told HuffPost that his debut novel, How I Paid For College, was inspired by his own decision to leave home after coming out as gay in high school. Were it not for a friend’s mother who took me in, I easily could have ended up on the streets,” he explained. “I look at any displaced person—homeless, immigrant, refugee—and I don’t see ‘other.’ I see myself.”

Watch Acito and Engelhardt talk about the project in the video above, then head here to read more about the fundraiser.

Help Those Who Are Trying to Overcome a Loss During Holidays

By Germayne Graham
UCF Forum columnist

I lost my cousin to a tragic suicide death 23 years ago and my heart has never forgotten the pain that I felt following this loss.

Usually around the anniversary of his death I start to feel sad, anxious, uneasy or just a little “off.” At first I didn’t immediately relate the feelings that I was experiencing to the memory of my heart. Now that I am aware, I can control my emotions. This empowerment allows one to turn a memory of something bad into something good.

Especially around holidays and special occasions, the pain of loss and death can take a toll on one’s physical and mental health when trying to regain a normal sense of functioning. According to psychiatrist Elisabeth Kubler-Ross, a pioneer in near-death studies, everyone who experiences loss has to work their way through the process or stages of grief. This looks different for every individual and each unique circumstance.

Even after many years have passed, there is an imprint on the heart that is still activated and responds emotionally to the memories of that loss. As we go through this holiday season, please remember to be patient and kind to those who are going through their first year of a loss.

It takes many people a full year to create new memories that exclude the person they lost. Every holiday, birthday, anniversary and special celebration they are reminded of the person who is no longer with them.

There is no formula for the grieving process, however there are things that we can do to help others as they navigate their journey of loss. There are also words that hinder the process. Here are three things to avoid saying to those who may be grieving a loss during this season:

“I know how you feel.” The person who has experienced the loss is simply looking for validation of his or her feelings. It is not helpful at this time to share stories or information that is not requested or needed. Try to keep the focus on them and not you.

Try saying: “Even though I can identify with the feeling of losing someone special, I won’t assume that I know what it feels like for you to lose your_____. Just know that I am here to listen when you need me.

“That was so long ago, you should be over this by now.” Triggers such as music, dates or occasions may involuntarily bring on memories and emotions related to a loss.

What may be more helpful to say is: “Our heart has memories that sometimes our brain may not immediately recognize. Do you want to talk about what you’re feeling right now?”

“Be strong.” This implies that one is being weak when expressing his or her true emotions about a loss.

It is helpful to hear: “I am here for you. There is no agenda – feel free to cry, talk or just sit.”

Please pay attention to family, friends, co-workers and neighbors during this season that should be festive – there are some hurting hearts that need compassion.

And my hope for you is to have pleasant and rewarding holidays. Here’s to a 2017 filled with peace.

This Is The Actual Inspiration Behind Those Crazy Outfits At The Met Gala

Monday night’s Met Gala left onlookers speechless with the elaborate gowns and overall commitment to the theme, “Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology.”

This year the annual exhibit, which opens up to the public at the Metropolitan Museum of Art shortly after the eve of the gala, examines the relationship between hand-made and machine made garments over time. The result? An even bigger display of mind-blowing gowns than those usually seen on the red carpet.

The museum’s website explains that the exhibit, which features over 150 ensembles, will “address the founding of the haute couture in the 19th century, when the sewing machine was invented, and the emergence of a distinction between the hand (manus) and the machine (machina) at the onset of mass production.”

There are feathers! There is intricate design! And if you thought the train on Zoe Saldana’s dress was long, well:

Enough said.

Feast your eyes on the gorgeous gowns below, and if you’re in New York, be sure to visit the exhibit, which runs May 5 to August 14.

Here’s How Far In Advance You Should Send Those Wedding Invitations

The rules of wedding etiquette are constantly changing, making it difficult for modern brides, grooms and guests to find up-to-date and correct information. That’s why we launched #MannersMondays, a series in which we ask our followers on Twitter and Facebook to submit their most burning etiquette-related questions. Then, with the help of our team of etiquette experts, we get you the right answers to your biggest Big Day dilemmas. Check out this week’s question below!

Anna Post — great-great-granddaughter of etiquette guru Emily Post and author of Emily Post’s Wedding Etiquette — is here to help us answer this week’s question. Find out what she had to say below:

Wedding invitations are typically sent roughly eight weeks out from the wedding, with an RSVP deadline about two or three weeks prior to the wedding. These dates are all flexible — the mailing date might easily compress down to six weeks or expand up to ten. Under special circumstances, like a short-notice wedding, the time frame can compress as much as needed. Or for far-flung guest travel, it would likely expand outward even more. You don’t want the invitation following immediately after the save-the-date (otherwise what’s the point of the save-the-date?), so in your case, you might compress the timing a little. Here’s what you should think about as you set your timetable:

Ask your caterer when he or she will need an absolutely final guest count by. This is usually within a week or two of the wedding date. Then count back a week or so to give you time to track down any guests who haven’t replied on time. This is your RSVP deadline. From there, count backward four to six weeks. This is the date you will mail your invitations.

If you plan to send additional invitations as you receive “no” RSVPs, count back an additional two weeks to set your mailing date, so that guests whose invitations are sent later still have plenty of time to reply. Nothing says “‘B-list guest” like receiving an invitation at the last minute. Any B-list guests should never know they were B-list.

Once you know the date you will mail your invitations, plan backward a little further to the date you will need your invitation order to arrive because that’s not the same as the date they will be mailed. In between those two dates, you will need one to two weeks to address your envelopes (this is traditionally done by hand), assemble stuff, weigh (don’t skip this step at the post office!), seal and stamp your invitations. You will also want to double-check that the addresses are correct. Even with a small guest list, this takes time.

You can submit your wedding etiquette questions via Facebook or tweet them to us @HuffPostWedding with the hashtag #MannersMondays.

7 Rules to Live by for Those Who Live With Passion

This post originally appeared on BrandMentalist.com.

There are many ways to live life — there is no right or wrong. However, some of us believe in living a life full of passion — a life where you never feel bored, stagnant, or stuck — a life where you’re constantly excited and inspired. Without passion, life seems meaningless and mundane. To live a conventional life where we embark on a traditional job that doesn’t excite us is scary and dreadful. To live by the rules and marry someone boring is a life in imprisonment. You believe that to live is to always stimulate your senses, to feel, to experience, and to never be bored.

Below are the seven rules you live by.

1. Always find out what your passion is.

The first step to living a life full of passion is to find out what your passion is. Looking back to your childhood, you remember so vividly what you were passionate about, what you could spend hours on without feeling lonely, and what you felt proud of achieving as a kid. As you grow up, sometimes you feel overwhelmed with the responsibilities you have to take. But no matter how busy you are, you always find an interest outside of your role at work or your role as a family member. You always find your passion and make time for it. And if you’re lucky, you can successfully turn your passion into a career.

Your passion keeps your heart beating. It gives you room to breathe and space to relax — truly an inspiring gift to your soul!

2. Get obsessed with your passion.

Once you’ve discovered your passion, you give it all you’ve got and get to know it inside and out. Your passion becomes a huge part of who you are — a part of your identity. It is something you feel proud to call “your interest” as it helps build up your self-image and self-esteem. Even if you start out as an amateur or a beginner, you are determined to become an expert in it. You live and breathe it. It is almost always magical when you bump into someone who is as passionate about the same thing as you are. Your eyes light up when you talk about your passion. You feel energetic and enthusiastic about it. Even when your body is tired, your heart tells you to keep going. You can never imagine living a life without a strong passion for something.

You see the world through your passion — this is the only way you can live and the only way for you to really enjoy life.

3. Be open-minded and curious.

You live life with arms wide open and are open to opportunities especially in your field of passion. You try to listen and understand, rather than judge. By being open-minded, you get to learn more and experience more — shaping your perspective to see things from all angles and to find beauty in different things. Your inspiration is fueled by your curiosity. Your creativity is driven by your desire to learn.

You love meeting new interesting people who live with passion and are curious to learn more. The world contains limitless opportunities and the path of discovery just never ends.

4. Be spontaneous

To live life according to plans is to live a boring life. Your definition of life planning is more of a strategic thought-out process that gives you the ability to assess which approach is best. However, you keep your plan flexible. You are ready to jump on the plane whenever you need to. You are willing to say yes to random and spontaneous opportunities presented in front of you. You are not scared to commit to a decision made on the spur of the moment. In fact, it excites you to just jump right into something and see where it takes you.

Jumping out of your comfort zone gives you an adrenaline rush. Knowing that you have the flexibility and freedom to fly and run wild gives you comfort.

Life is fun. So why not embrace it and be a little unpredictable, right?

5. Love fully and deeply

Your passion in life goes beyond just your enthusiasm for your topic of interest. Your passion penetrates all parts of your life including love. You love fully and deeply with a passion. You don’t let it go dry or stale. You always find ways to spice up your love life. Sometimes you feel vulnerable because of this. But it is the only way to truly feel the emotional side of yourself.

Mediocrity and dull are not in your dictionary. It is to love passionately or nothing at all.

6. Be inspiring

The meaning of life is to find your gift. The purpose of life is to give it away. — Pablo Picasso

Passion is contagious and the only way to be truly fulfilled is to inspire others. As your passion gives your life purpose and meaning, it would be a shame to keep what you know and what you experience to yourself. Telling your life’s story or showcasing your creativity to the world is a way to pass on your passion. You want to inspire others to feel better about life and themselves. You want to inspire others to do more, be more, and achieve more. At the end of the day, to feel uninspired and hopeless is the worst feeling ever. As you are someone who lives with passion and finds happiness and life’s joy through it, you want to inspire others to feel the same way.

7. Travel

The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page. — St. Augustine

Whatever your passion is, there are communities of people who are passionate about the same thing as you. Their perspective on it might be somewhat different. But the beauty of it is to appreciate the difference, to perceive things from the angles you haven’t seen, and to experience things you haven’t done. The beauty of art in a French artist’s perspective might be somewhat different from an American artist’s perspective. The beauty of electronic music to an English producer’s ears might be different to a German producer’s ears.

To travel is to expand the horizon of where your passion is confined.

What Are Those Aviator Sunglasses the Kardashians Are Always Wearing?

People who watch Keeping Up With the Kardashians with a fashion lens might have noticed something going on—nearly every single female has worn the same oversize pair of jet-black aviator sunglasses at some point.

kardashians-black-aviator-sunglasses-porsche

The clan hasn’t ever said exactly what pair they’re rocking, but they appear to be a Porsche style with removable lenses (specifically, P8478). The shades are available in a few sizes, but the oversize fit all the women rock likely means they have the largest option (69 millimeters).

khloe-kardashian-black-aviator-sunglasses-close-up

A zoomed-in shot of Khloe’s pair shows that they definitely have the small hooks that allow the lens to be exchanged for other colors. Compared with the Porsche P8478 style, available now, it’s kinda hard to argue they’re not the same.

Queen Latifah Opens Up About Those Lesbian Love Scenes In ‘Bessie’

On-screen love scenes, gay or straight, should not be a matter of controversy, according to Queen Latifah.

Latifah spoke with BET about a same-sex kiss in the upcoming HBO biopic, “Bessie,” in which she stars as legendary blues singer, Bessie Smith, who was bisexual.

“You know, people feel a type of way when they see any sexuality on-screen, to me, and I think it’s almost human nature,” she said. “People are so fascinated by it. There shouldn’t even be a discussion, but it is because people are still curious and people still wonder how they feel about things. At the end of the day, I don’t really care if someone feels uncomfortable about it. It is what it is, and it’s life. So you either deal with it or not, you know? That’s your choice. It’s just part of who she is. I had to tell the story honestly.”

Latifah, who bares it all in “Bessie,” added that she hopes viewers don’t focus only on Smith’s romantic interests.

“I hope that it doesn’t become the sole issue because it’s really not just, you know, one thing about Bessie. There’s so many parts of who she was. [Her sexuality] was just part of it,” Latifah said.

In the April/May 2015 issue of Uptown magazine, the actress, who has faced rumors over her own sexuality, said she thinks that “people’s ideas in general are antiquated when it comes to who you love” and that society has not progressed quickly enough.

Here’s Who Ben Mendelsohn Wants To Play In ‘Star Wars’ If Those Rumors Are True

Ben Mendelsohn is having quite the moment, and if those “Star Wars” rumors end up being true, he’s bound to become a household name in Hollywood.

The Australian actor has been well-known back home since he was a teenager, but you’ve likely seen him more and more recently in American films and TV shows. He was killed by Bane in “The Dark Knight Rises,” played Jessa’s father in HBO’s “Girls,” and appeared alongside Brad Pitt in “Killing Them Softly.”

This year alone, Mendelsohn’s credits include Netflix’s “Bloodline,” Ryan Gosling’s directorial debut “Lost River,” gambler film “Mississippi Grind ” and indie Western “Slow West.” Let’s also not forget that he might star alongside Felicity Jones in “Star Wars: Rogue One.”

In John Maclean’s feature film debut, “Slow West,” Michael Fassbender (who previously worked with Maclean on two short films), plays Silas, a mysterious traveler headed west in 16th-century Colorado. Silas helps 16-year-old Scottish boy Jay Cavendish (Kodi Smit-McPhee) on his journey to find the girl he loves until they run into Mendelsohn’s Payne, a villainous leader of a gang of bounty hunters.

The Huffington Post sat down with Mendelsohn at the Tribeca Film Festival last month to discuss the wardrobe he took home from “Slow West,” who he’d like to play in the “Star Wars” universe, and his bizarre dance in “Lost River.”

slow west mendelsohn

I loved “Slow West.” It’s so beautifully made.
Yeah, [Maclean] did really well, didn’t he? It’s beautifully shot. He’s got something, that guy. And Fassbender found him, or they found each other. So I just got asked on board when it was all in its shape and I have a little turn in it.

You don’t show up in too many scenes, but when Payne is on screen he definitely makes an impression.
This, I like this. And that coat [points to the film poster].

Payne’s coat is amazing! Did you get to keep it?
I have that coat. I have it sitting on a mannequin at home. I don’t have memorabilia, but try to take a bit of wardrobe, usually because they dress me better than I dress myself. But that coat, that’s a thing of beauty. I’m very proud of it.

Are you going to wear it around?
Yeah, I suppose I might bust it out in moments of great bravery or just deep cold. I did wear it for the premiere in Sundance.

What was it like working with Fassbender?
Michael had a lot of stuff to do. It was all drunk hoo-ha and boy, he did some incredibly dangerous things around a fire, which aren’t in the [final] cut. There was some falling, some drunken shenanigans near fires and rocks, sh*t that I was going, “Oh, f**k.” But there’s a fearlessness to the way he works that is pretty admirable. And Kodi [Smit-McPhee], there’s such a delicateness to him. When he starts acting, he feels like gossamer. It was a good couple of days.

tv show gifs
Image via Tumblr

You’ve been so well-known in Australia, but now you’re finally having a breakthrough in the U.S. What’s that feel like?
It’s cool. It’s been a great several years. I came here for a very, very long time and just couldn’t get any sort of traction going. There were a couple of people who liked me, but it didn’t translate into anything that was employment based. I like to think that what really helped it was the one-two punch of “Animal Kingdom” and either “Place Beyond the Pines” or “Killing Them Softly.” Those combined really seemed to set some wind in the sails. It’s been a dreamy couple of years.

I bet. And now there’s those “Star Wars” rumors …
Yeah, there are those rumors.

So, are they just rumors?
They — I can definitively and honestly say to you that I have no job yet that I know of to go to. That may change. I would be very happy if that came to pass, but at this stage it’s just chatter.

Ideally, if you were in it, what character would you want to play?
It would depend. I think that the Empire has such room. We only know of a few people on the Empire side of the fence. “Star Wars” is populated by so many great types, who wouldn’t want to be a Han Solo kind of dude? And then you’ve got the whole Luke strain. I don’t think that they’re likely to — I’d be thrilled, actually, if they were looking at me for a Skywalkery-type of a number. But yeah, there’s a lot.

You also worked with Gosling again in “Lost River,” where you have singing and dancing scenes. Had you ever done something like that before?
No, I’ve never sung before. That’s me doing my Frankie Laine impersonation. There’s a little film I did where I sing a bit, but nothing like that. And the dance was something we just figured out very last minute just before we were going to shoot the scene. We knew we had it coming up and I went down there and we put on a A$ AP Rocky track and just danced off.

That’s even more bizarre because that’s totally different from the song playing in the scene.
That’s right, it’s not [the same]. But if you ever want to hear what it was that I was dancing to, it is “F**king Problems.”

Did you know the song before that?
Yeah, I was familiar with the opus. I’m a reasonably — I have my phases — but I really like music.

“Slow West” is now playing in select theaters.

5 New Year’s Resolutions Those Over 50 Should Never Make

Resolutions are for those who succumb to peer pressure, right? Besides, does anyone really think the flip of a calendar page is going to give them the determination that they’ve lacked thus far? We prefer a more realistic approach, and so, with the spirit of holiday exhaustion and grumpiness that we happen to be experiencing at the moment, here are five New Year’s resolutions that those over 50 should never, ever make:

Resolve that 2015 is the year you will stop working.
Sorry, we just fell off our chair laughing at that one. No, my Pretties, you actually will not stop working in 2015. In fact, there is an excellent chance that you will never stop working, at least not voluntarily and at least not while you are still breathing.

You may thank the Great Recession for the derailment of your retirement plans. According to the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 1985 only 10.8 percent of the population age 65 or older was working. In 2013, it was 18.7 percent. Nope, nobody is going nowhere unless they are being pushed out the door. Speaking of which, since there are about 1.5 million unemployed Baby Boomers who still can’t find work and would jump at a chance to occupy your desk, you might want to cool any nonsensical retirement talk when you’re within their earshot.

Resolve that you will not be a bawling mess when your nest empties this year.
We think parents who fall apart when their first, last or any kids leave for college are simply misunderstood and are unduly criticized. Critics are fond of slapping the “empty nester” label on them, but that is just so wrong. Plus we all know what happens to empty nests: The gardener uses the hose to flush them out of the rain gutters. Nobody should be hosed for missing their children. Empty nesters are the people who devoted their lives to the support of their kids. We should be lauding them, not hosing them!

Empty nesters should just ignore those who think they need to build lives of their own now. Screw those people. They are clueless and their opinions don’t matter. In fact, you should feel free to start uncorking the waterworks as early as the college application process; just thinking about your son moving to that Big City 3,000 miles away is enough to get you all teary, am I right? And you are absolutely correct: Even the dog senses his pending departure and looks depressed. It’s obvious to all but the blind and the insensitive; dogs know stuff.

Your resolution should be this: I will allow myself the pleasure of being miserable when my kids leave for college. I will also allow myself the pleasure of telling off anyone who suggests I don’t have a life of my own.

Resolve that you will never go on HRT.
For those who don’t speak fluent Menopause, HRT stands for hormone replacement therapy. It comes in many shapes and forms and basically produces what your body no longer feels like producing. It is a near-instant end to hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings and vaginal dryness. It also isn’t the healthiest thing in the world for a lot of women to be on. Personally speaking, HRT was preferable to incarceration for murdering a slow grocery clerk. We mentioned irritability was a symptom, right?

While HRT used to be the gold standard when it came to treatment for menopausal symptoms, its use changed abruptly after a large clinical trial found that it posed more health risks than benefits for some people. As the concern about health hazards grew, doctors became less likely to prescribe it.

HRT is one of those never say never things. Talk to your doctor about it.

Resolve to reinvent yourself — unless you have a real plan.
The idea that people over 50 can have a second career or chase a long-lost dream in middle age gets a lot of lip service. The problem is, it’s one of those things that’s easier said than done — especially if all you do is talk about it.

If 2015 is going to be your year, you need to do more than exercise the old jawbone. You need to have a plan. You need to take the first step. People who have successfully written a second chapter in their lives all have one thing in common: They took action. They got started. They did more than talk.

Resolve to find shoes that are both stylish and comfortable.
They do not exist. You’re wasting your time. Going forward into aging, shoes will either be comfortable or they will be stylish; they will not be both. You will wear flats every day and keep one pair of black heels for the annual New Year’s Eve party you go to and know that you will be carrying them by the time the ball drops.

Giving up stylish shoes is probably harder than accepting elastic waist pants and drugstore hair coloring into your life. But you will. And your feet will thank you for it. Unless of course someone wants to reinvent themselves as a manufacturer of stylish comfort shoes, in which case, they will also be reinventing themselves into one very rich person.

For Those With Absolutely No Interest in Pirates

Facebook’s COO, Sheryl Sandberg, titled her book Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead. In her new memoir, A Fighting Chance, Elizabeth Warren recalls how, during her 2012 campaign for the United States Senate, she would frequently introduce herself to young girls by making eye contact as she said “I’m Elizabeth and I’m running for Senate because that’s what girls do.”

Much has been written about how the power networks in Washington, D.C. and Silicon Valley essentially operate like old-fashioned sausage factories, with much of the tech industry oozing near-toxic levels of a “bro” mentality. In her recent article entitled What Are Misogynist Geeks So Afraid Of? Amanda Marcotte (the author of It’s a Jungle Out There: The Feminist Survival Guide to Politically Inhospitable Environments) writes:

“You see, as a big punk and indie rock fan, I witnessed something similar happen in the 1990s in that scene. Women who wanted to play instruments in rock bands got a lot of shit from dudes. A lot of men who otherwise thought of themselves as progressive and enlightened would immediately bunch up the second they saw a woman playing guitar. This woman could do something they couldn’t do, or could do it better. The possibility that they weren’t inherently better just by virtue of being male was raised. So they tried to shut it down, reassert themselves and their social superiority (usually through sexual harassment, which is the cheapest and easiest way for a man to assert his male privilege). It sucked. Women fought back. Sexist dudes heckled louder.

Eventually, however — in no small part because the ugly attempts to assert male privilege started to evolve into bands like Limp Bizkit (showing exactly how much of an intellectual embarrassment misogyny really is), the women started winning. Nowadays, you go to clubs and women are up there playing. By and large, they are left alone. Occasionally some asshole will try to say something, but it’s a lot better than it used to be, by a long shot. The number of women on stage in punk and indie clubs seems much higher to me than it did when I was in my late teens and early 20s.”

Founded in July 2008, Bay Area Girls Rock Camp is the kind of summer program Marcotte might have loved to attend in her youth. The following documentary by Lily Yu, Judy Lee, and Jeremiah Mellor was recently screened during the 2014 San Francisco International Film Festival.

But what if you’re a spoiled teenage girl who finds herself in the following predicament:

  • Because of your family’s extreme wealth, you have no friends.
  • After staying out all night, every night, haunting the club scene and getting very little sleep, you’re prone to frequent bouts of narcolepsy.
  • Having been indicted for running a lucrative Ponzi scheme, your father (a Bernard Madoff type) is headed off to jail.
  • Although your big dream in life is to be hired as a drummer in a rock band, you ain’t got no talent.

The answer should be obvious: You end up as the protagonist in a new musical — but not just any musical. A musical with all this intrigue and a telltale tattoo, too!

The creative team for Sleeping Cutie: A Fractured Fairy Tale Musical knows its theatre history well. Not only have they named the show’s musical finale “Deus Ex Machina” (after a stage gimmick that was quite popular in ancient Greek theatre), they’ve obviously learned a lesson from the pre-Broadway tryout of 1962’s hit musical, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum.

When Forum was foundering during its Washington tryout, Jerome Robbins was brought in as a show doctor to help the creative team (Stephen Sondheim, Burt Shevelove, and Larry Gelbart). Most people were unaware of the backstage tensions caused by his presence. Jim Brochu describes what happened in his one-man show entitled Zero Hour.

As an experienced dancer, director and choreographer, Robbins quickly identified the problem: The opening number “(Love Is In The Air”) wasn’t working and needed to be replaced. The audience needed to be told what Forum was all about at the beginning of the evening in order for them to understand the inspiration for its particular style of low comedy.

The opening number that Robbins devised (“Comedy Tonight”) became a Broadway classic. After Forum opened to rave reviews in New York, it received the 1963 Tony Award for Best Musical and ran for 964 performances,

Faced with so many fairy tales that have become cultural landmarks (not to mention popular adaptations of the Sleeping Beauty legend for ballet, animation, and updated versions of the story for film and stage), Diane Sampson (who wrote the book and lyrics for Sleeping Cutie) decided to set the tone from the beginning with an opening number entitled “What This Isn’t.”

With the tone of the piece firmly established, she was able to introduce a cast of characters familiar to modern audiences.

  • The Father (Jesse Caldwell) is a classic swindler who, faced with many years in jail, is having major regrets about the number of lives he has ruined. The person he is most concerned about, however, is his teenage daughter who seems alone and directionless.
  • Mary (Stephanie Prentice) is the archetypal housekeeper-guardian left behind to look over Lucy while her father is in prison.
  • Lucy (Marissa Joy Ganz) is a spoiled brat whose mother disappeared when Lucy was very young. As a result, she has never had to think of anyone’s needs but her own.

Supporting characters that cross paths with the principals are handled by proteans Man #1 (John Patrick Moore) and Man #2 (Buzz Halsing), And then there are the two love interests:

  • Charlie (Luke Chapman) is the blind lead singer in a rock group which is auditioning female drummers for their band. He quickly falls for Lucy’s questionable charms.
  • The Woman (Gwen Loeb) is a patient in a rehabilitation center for people with psychological problems who has been chatting online with Lucy’s father and pushing for a chance to visit him in prison.

Co-produced by Playground and Off A Cliff Productions, Sleeping Cutie recently received its world premiere at San Francisco’s Thick House. In her director’s note, Cindy Goldfield writes:

“Directing a new musical is a funny thing. A lesson in trust, intuition, patience, and inspiration. My favorite part of the process (with the input of the playwright, composer, and the actors) is discovering the basic core themes which generally are present even in early drafts… the playwright’s voice ringing out even when they may not be able to articulate it themselves. Forgiveness. Retribution. Acceptance. Renewal. Fate. Recovery. Compassion. The themes of this play are big and lush, sometimes humorous and sometimes scary. Not your usual fare for a traditional musical … which this is not. In working on Cutie, what struck me were the internal struggles of the characters. The courage in reaching out for connection, trusting an intuition, finding strength in vulnerability. These universal human themes inspired me at every turn.”

Sleeping Cutie features a clever, well-crafted book by Diane Sampson, clearly-defined characters and some delightful plot twists. Why then, did I leave the theatre feeling strangely unfulfilled? Perhaps it was because I couldn’t remember a single note (much less a complete song) from Doug Katsaros’s highly functional but not particularly memorable score.

The problem may have more to do with its execution on opening night than its basic composition. While each of the actors had a distinct voice, there seemed to be an odd imbalance at crucial moments. Marissa Joy Ganz’s Lucy tended toward shrillness while Gwen Loeb’s sweet soprano allowed her songs (“How I See It” and “Then and Now”) to resonate with more empathy. Unfortunately, John Patrick Moore’s upper range was simply not up to the vocal demands of Katsaros’s music.

Keeping in mind that this production was mounted on a shoestring budget, these are minor quibbles which can probably be fixed with more money and better musical preparation.

Social Butterflies’ Brains Differ From Those Of People With Fewer Friends, New Study Shows

SAN DIEGO — Being a social butterfly just might change your brain: In people with a large network of friends and excellent social skills, certain brain regions are bigger and better connected than in people with fewer friends, a new study finds.

The research, presented here Tuesday (Nov. 12) at the annual meeting of the Society for Neuroscience, suggests a connection between social interactions and brain structure.

“We’re interested in how your brain is able to allow you to navigate in complex social environments,” study researcher MaryAnn Noonan, a neuroscientist at Oxford University, in England, said at a news conference. Basically, “how many friends can your brain handle?” Noonan said. [7 Personality Traits You Should Change]

Scientists still don’t understand how the brain manages human behavior in increasingly complex social situations, or what parts of the brain are linked to deviant social behavior associated with conditions like autism and schizophrenia.

Studies in macaque monkeys have shown that brain areas involved in face processing and in predicting the intentions of others are larger in animals living in large social groups than in ones living in smaller groups.

To investigate these brain differences in humans, Noonan and her colleagues at McGill University, in Canada, recruited 18 participants for a structural brain-imaging study. They asked people how many social interactions they had experienced in the past month, in order to determine the size of their social networks.

As was the case in monkeys, some brain areas were enlarged and better connected in people with larger social networks. In humans, these areas were the temporal parietal junction, the anterior cingulate cortex and the rostral prefrontal cortex, which are part of a network involved in “mentalization” — the ability to attribute mental states, thoughts and beliefs to another.

“These different brain regions are all singing different songs,” Noonan said. “Networked areas are all singing the same song, and when they’re connected better, they’re singing more harmoniously with each other.”

The researchers also tested whether the size of a person’s social network was linked with changes in white-matter pathways, the nerve fibers that connect different brain regions.

Again, they found that white-matter tracts were better connected in people with bigger social networks. “The nerves were more like a Los Angeles freeway than a country road,” Noonan said.

The researchers couldn’t say whether social interaction caused these changes in brain structure and connectivity, or whether the brain determined how innately social someone was.

In the case of the monkeys, the researchers dictated the size of the animals’ social network, so they concluded that social-group size was causing the brain differences.

It can be inferred that a similar process takes place in human brains, but to prove this, long-term studies are needed, Noonan told LiveScience.

The fact that some brain regions may be larger and more connected suggests other regions might be smaller in the brains of the more socially adept, Noonan said.

“If you’re spending a lot of time in social environments using social skills and your brain’s changing, maybe you’re not learning to juggle in your free time or becoming proficient at the piano,” she said. “The brain is just changing and optimizing to reflect your needs, and if that is thriving within a complex social environment, that is what your brain is reflecting.”
