Eckhaus Latta and Ugg Throw an L.A. Dinner Party in Honor of Their Collaboration

“You can see my house from here,” said L.A. native Este Haim on a summit of Montecito Heights overlooking Los Angeles on Wednesday night. Leave it to Eckhaus Latta to showcase someplace new, a part of town in Northeast L.A. — east of Echo Park — unfamiliar to most. “You can also see the high school I went to. This view doesn’t suck.”
The bicoastal brand, founded in New York City by Zoe Latta and Mike Eckhaus in 2011, was throwing an al fresco dinner party to celebrate their recent collaboration with Ugg.
“We listened to a lot of techno in the car,” she said of the ride over with sisters and Haim bandmembers, Danielle and Alana Haim. “We listened to a bunch of Eiffel 65. And do you remember Rockell? She was a late-Ninties techno artist. When we’re on our way to a party or dinner, we like to put on music that helps inform the vibe of the night to come.”
“These are my sisters,” she continued, as Danielle and Alana appeared. The three were donning the same outfit, head to toe.
“It’s legitimately the same garment,” said Este. “We had the opportunity to, and we just kind of grabbed the bull

Nordstrom, Union Throw Block Party for Concept 005 Launch

Sam Lobban wasn’t about to host just another in-store event for the launch of Nordstrom’s latest pop-up men’s concept shop. Instead, the retailer’s vice president of men’s fashion threw a high-energy block party at the Hester Street Market on the Lower East Side to introduce Concept 005: Union & Company, complete with food, drinks, live music and fun takeaways.
“We’ve been to enough boring cocktail parties,” said Chris Gibbs, owner of Union, the buzzy Los Angeles-based specialty store. “We wanted to create something we would actually go to.”
The event was properly named a block party. The vibe was a neighborhood cookout, with food provided by Jamaican restaurant Miss Lily’s. The only thing missing was an open fire hydrant for children to run around, but the young attendees found fun and games at a ping-pong table instead.
A newsstand near the entrance carried fashion magazines, gave out free candy, and scratch-off tickets for a chance to win a free T-shirt. Games such as dominoes and chess were stationed on picnic tables and wooden speakers were in the rear where Stretch and Bobbito provided tunes for the party.

Tone-Deaf Jewelry Ad Tells Customers To ‘Throw Rocks At Girls’

A jewelry store in Asheville, North Carolina has apologized for its tone-deaf billboard ad that caused outrage on the internet.

The billboard in question comes from Spicer Greene Jewelers and is currently located near Interstate 240. It reads: “Sometimes, It’s ok to throw rocks at girls…,” surrounded by photos of brightly colored jewels, aka “rocks.”

The company issued an apology on Facebook Thursday after the ad sparked a negative reaction on Twitter and in the media

Eva-Michelle Spicer, the co-owner of Spicer Greene Jewelers, told The Huffington Post via email that the billboard will come down as soon as they can replace it with their next campaign (which is usually around every four weeks, according to Asheville paper, The Citizen Times ). When HuffPost asked who came up with the statement, Spicer said, “It’s a common phrase in the jewelry industry. We did not invent it.”

The majority of responses to Spicer Greene’s Facebook apology implied they many thought the ad was funny and that critics of it were being too sensitive.

“BRILLIANT AD…No apology required,” one commenter wrote, while another added, “These people are idiots and will probably never have any shiny rocks thrown at them! The billboard is funny! Get a sense of humor, life will be much better!”

One woman complained about the “snowflakes that whine over everything,” and told the company, “I hope you make a 500% increase in sales.”

Many of the Twitter responses to the company’s apologies also maintained the billboard was “hilarious:”

Others, like Chelsea Clinton, found the ad incredibly offensive and pointed out that joking about violence against women is “never funny.” Especially in a world where women are still stoned to death

“The billboard was intent to be a nostalgic thought of a childhood teaching,” Spicer told ABC News 13 WLOS. “That it’s not ok to throw rocks at girls, it’s not ok to throw rocks at anyone… It saddens me that it was taken that way, because it certainly wasn’t intended.”

Harry Smith’s Last Throw

Harry Smith’s Last Throw

The War of Mlanjeni was the longest conflict in South African history until the second Anglo-Boer War. The loss of life was substantially heavier than that of the Zulu War of 1879 and the political after-effects of it were significantly greater than those that followed the Zulu War. The Zulu War has been the subject of numerous accounts but the silence surrounding the Eighth Frontier War is deafening. Harry Smith’s Last Throw fills this gap: a moving history, vividly drawn out using eye-witness accounts. The narrative is not limited to the British perspective. Xhosa accounts have been translated (many for the first time) to avoid an Anglo-centric bias. For both sides by the 8th War there was a great deal of blood to avenge and brutal killings were perpetrated by many combatants. The author provides a colorful backdrop, explaining how the Dutch East India Company came to the Cape to establish a provision station for ships on the way to its East Indies empire. Dutch Burghers settled there but the Company had no interest in Africa itself. In order to be viable farms had to be large and this created a class of independent-minded who looked increasingly to the interior of Africa, pushing the Colony&supl;s borders. The wars with the Xhosa were the result of the eventual expansion of these boundaries into Xhosa territory.

Trump to Throw Glitzy New Year’s Eve Celebration

WASHINGTON — President-elect Donald Trump will ring in the New Year with 800 guests, including Sylvester Stallone and Quincy Jones at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach on Saturday night, according to Sean Spicer, incoming White House press secretary.
Spicer, who briefed reporters Friday morning, said soon-to-be First Lady Melania Trump and their son, Barron, are expected to attend the glitzy celebration, which will include a cocktail party, dinner and dancing until 1:00 a.m. Sunday. The decor is being provided by Jose Graterol Designs and the band for the night is Party on the Moon. Spicer said the event is sold out.
Stallone, who was reportedly approached by Republican allies of Trump about a prominent arts-related position earlier this month, indicated in mid-December he was “flattered” to be under consideration as chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts, but not interested.
He suggested he would be “more effective by bringing national attention to returning military personnel in an effort to find gainful employment, suitable housing and financial assistance.”
The New Year’s eve celebration promises to dazzle, especially under the discerning eye of Graterol who has decorated the grand ballroom of Mar-a-Lago on past occasions.

Created in northeastern India by local weavers, these intricate rugs provide a livelihood to villagers, particularly women who have been traditionally excluded from opportunities in Indiaâ s workforce. The elaborate process takes several artisans to complete, beginning with patterns that are hand traced and colored. Dependent on which highly detailed construction is chosen for a rug design, it can take anywhere from one week to over six months to complete one of these expertly crafted masterpieces.A portion of the profits from these rugs and pillows goes towards a school lunch program that serves fresh, nutritious daily meals to 1.3 million children in rural India. For many children, this is their only substantial meal of the day. Additional donations are also made to a scholarship program that enhances literacy and learning in Southeast Asia. Nearly 80 percent of children from impoverished families drop out before graduation due to the burden of educational fees, books and uniforms. This program helps compensate for all school expenses in addition to mandating and paying for after-school tutoring for students most in need.

Girl's Best Friend -

Anne Frank Made Me Throw Up

I looked forward to Amsterdam; meeting up with my friend Laura, and attending to unfinished business.

We met at Schiphol Airport, or shit pool, as she called it. It was a relief to see Laura. The last five weeks of traveling, had been a challenging, and I longed for familiarity, and people who spoke English.

Before I left for Amsterdam, I got an email from my mother. “Dani, have fun and don’t smoke too much dope.” Where do I begin with that?

I first visited Amsterdam when I spent a semester abroad studying in Paris, when I was in college. School was a breeze, and it didn’t require a great deal of studying, so I was able to travel every weekend. For six months I took full advantage of my time in Europe. One weekend I decided to go to Amsterdam.

I arrived at the architecturally impressive train station in the city of legal drugs, legal prostitution and cheese. I stayed at Bob’s Youth Hostel, which at the time was a popular backpacker hangout. By coincidence, I ran into a couple of girls from my program back in Paris. They invited me to hang out with them, or I invited myself, I can’t remember. They were partiers. I was not. They wanted to lounge in coffee shops, and smoke dope. I did not. I wanted to go to the Van Gogh Museum and to The Anne Frank House–they did not.

Actually, I didn’t either but my father sent me off to Europe with a list of recommended places to see, and I didn’t want to disappoint him, so I made sure that I ticked each and every one the list before I returned home. Taking the list literally dispels any mystery as to why I spent a good part of my entire adult life in therapy.

I went out to dinner with the girls, and ate a space cake. The details are foggy at best, but suffice it to say that the girls continued on to other coffee shops, and I went back to Bob’s to throw up. I hurled all through the night, which must have been a real treat for the forty other fellow travelers sharing the room with me.

I felt better in the morning so I went to the Van Gogh museum. When one acts for the sole purpose of checking off a list, chances are, one is not going to remember much, as it was in my case. I have zero recollection of what was in the museum; I assume some Van Gogh pieces.

I was still feeling okay, so I walked over to the Anne Frank house. I waited in line, bought my ticket and went inside. Just as I was midway up the attic staircase, a sudden wave of nausea washed over me. Please, no. Any place but the attic! I quickly did an about face, and bolted down the one-way staircase the wrong way. It was too late. There wasn’t time to find the actual exit.

I sprinted outside, ran across the street, and heaved the last few remnants of that evil space cake into the canal. Moments later I found my way back to Shit Pool Airport, and caught the next flight to Paris.

Eighteen years later, I was back at the Anne Frank house with Laura. I wanted to make it up to the attic. And I did. Anne’s story was indeed an incredible example of a triumphant spirit. I only wish that I didn’t see two young guys running through the house laughing and carrying on as if they were at a keg party.

The other part of Amsterdam that I missed all those years ago, due to my drug induced state, was the Red Light District, which inappropriately enough was also on my father’s list. Laura and I walked the streets. It was both sad and fascinating. Women were on display like ducks hanging in a Chinatown food stall. They peered out of their tiny windows at throngs of passerby’s. There was a fine line between giving an innocent look and staring. I didn’t want to be impolite and not look, but I didn’t want them to think that I was in the market, and get their hopes up.

The rows of windows looked like dioramas that I used to make in grade school. I think I expected the girls to be naked. They weren’t. Most of them looked despondent, hot and bothered. I expected them to be a bit more proactive. They could’ve tap danced or juggled, something to get the people’s attention. I’m sure it was a competitive business.

I saw one man writing a woman a check. Huh? Most grocery stores don’t take personal checks. One woman was watching television; that would’ve been me. Two girls sat in one window. I think one was visiting because she was fully clothed and holding the local Multiplex schedule under her arm.

Laura and I entertained the idea of knocking on one adorable Asian girl’s window so we could have a chat. I had a lot of questions, and as hard as she tried, Laura just didn’t have the answers. Do you have to pay for your window space? How come you’re not naked? Do you take Traveler’s Checks and credit cards too? Do you ride a bike to work? Is there central air and heat in the room?

As we were leaving, I saw a man walking into one of the dioramas with a smile on his face and dream in his heart. I ticked both The Anne Frank House and the Red Light District off of my list.

If Someone Makes You Mad, You Should Throw Down With These Shakespearean Insults

Okay, so, the next time somebody grinds your gears, you should definitely throw down with a clever retort like “swaggering rascal.”

Yes, that’s right: some serious metaphorical barbed wire from the Bard himself.

In the most recent episode of the YouTube series “Anglophenia,” Siobhan Thompson shows off some Shakespearean slander that should absolutely reenter the modern vernacular.

And the best part? You can find out what plays and scenes the insults came from on BBC America.

How To Throw A Wedding That Everyone Will Be Talking About

By Elizabeth Mitchell for Brides

Obviously lush flowers and a gorgeous venue are some of the elements of a beautiful wedding, but picture-perfect décor doesn’t ensure an epic party. Score a 10 out of 10 for overall experience by following these simple yet effective tips that will have your guests talking about your wedding for years to come.

1. Ask for song requests.

To ensure everyone is having a great time and dancing the night away, have your guests request a song via the invitation response, recommends Key Largo wedding planner Lynn D’Ascanio of “Give this list of songs to your DJ, along with the name of the person who requested each song. That way, if the dance floor starts to thin out, the DJ can play songs off of the request list.” This pretty much guarantees that the person who requested the song will get up and dance and encourage others to do so as well.

2. Don’t let your friends and family talk forever.

“Many fun events have been driven into the ground by deathly long speeches,” points out Lynn Jawitz, owner of Florisan Wedding and Event Design in NYC. To keep the party popping, ask your speech givers to keep their toasts short and sweet.

3. Remember to thank your guests.

Speaking of speeches, it’s important to let your guests knows how much you personally appreciate them coming. “It’s hard to believe how often this simple step is overlooked,” notes Jawitz. “Bite the bullet, make a speech (keep it short, of course) and just genuinely thank your guests for dropping their lives that day to share it with you.”

4. And keep them in the know.

According to D’Ascanio, the best weddings are the ones that are organized and follow a timeline. “When the events of the day unfold in a timely manner, and the bridal party and guests alike are not left standing around wondering what’s next or where they should go or what they should be doing, the entire day seems flawless.”

5. Add in an element of surprise.

Who doesn’t love a special surprise at a wedding? “You could hire a group of singers or dancers disguised as wait staff to break out into song or dance during dinner,” suggests D’Ascanio. Or you and the groom could perform a practiced dance routine yourselves for the first dance, offers Greg Jenkins, founder of Bravo Productions. “A ‘wow’ factor can be memorable and will ensure your guests have a blast.”

6. Opt for a short ceremony.

If possible, try to keep your ceremony simple and short in length. “A long, drawn-out ceremony takes away that guest energy level at the onset, and sometimes it cannot be recovered for the reception,” warns Jenkins.

7. Give birthday shout outs.

Does your BFF have a birthday on the same day as your big day? Or is it his parents’ anniversary too? “Have your MC acknowledge any birthdays and/or anniversaries with a dedicated song during the reception,” advises Daniela Grafman, wedding & special events coordinator at Vision Entertainment Group LLC. People love attention. Plus, it’s just a sweet gesture.

8. Hire a great band or DJ.

After all, they can, in fact, make or break a party. Florida wedding planner Aviva Samuels of Kiss The Planner, recommends looking for a high energy performer, while being careful not to choose an annoying personality to be your MC. “Great vocals, great dance moves and great spunk will have everyone up on their feet until it’s time to go home. Seamless song transitions and the ability to read the crowd when they want to hear more of the same sound or a desire to switch to a different sound is where a DJ’s talent also comes into play.”

9. Provide transportation.

If you’re hosting a destination wedding or your wedding is in a remote location, be sure to provide transportation for guests from their hotel to your wedding and back, says Lauren Randolph, founder of My Hotel Wedding. “This way people don’t have to worry about driving home drunk, which guarantees that they can party harder.”

10. Allow your guests plenty of free time.

This is particularly important if you have a destination wedding or a bunch of guests in from out of town, says professional wedding planner Sandy Malone of Weddings in Vieques. “Back to back activities after a long trip will run them into the ground. Let them have some time and space to explore and they’ll be refreshed and excited at all of your events.” We concur.
