Festival season is finally here, and so, too, are a number of fashion trends.
Coachella weekend one saw the emergence of a number of trends, primarily in the hair category, as influencers and guests looked to accessories, classic styles and colorful looks to complement their festival gear.
A go-to festival style, textured waves left its mark at Coachella, with many taking a grungy and grittier take on the classic beach waves with hair that looked like it had been dipped in a swimming pool prior to styling.
Others went for bold, colorful looks with balayage highlights and full coloring in pastel hues of pink, purple and blue.
Read on to see the five key hair trends that emerged at Coachella.

Boy with Cancer Who Took Picture With MLB Star Reunites With Him 13 Years Later as a Dodger

When Devin Smeltzer was just 9 years old, the young Philadelphia Phillies fan found himself frequently feeling the urge to go to the bathroom. Doctors would soon find a grapefruit-sized tumor pressing against his bladder, and he was diagnosed with cancer just a month before his 10th birthday.

Smeltzer, who started playing baseball when he was just 4 years old, found a bit of happiness while going through treatment when he was able to take to the field. The game of baseball gave Smeltzer a feeling of normalcy as going to crowded places like school and church were taken away because of his compromised immune system, he told Spectrum Sportsnet.

Smeltzer got his chance to mingle with major league players in 2006 when he visited Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia, the home of his favorite MLB team. It was there that Smeltzer—who, at that point, had lost his hair due to chemotherapy and radiation treatment for his pelvic rhabdomyosarcoma—was able to spend time with two of the Phillies’ players, pitcher Cole Hamels, and second-baseman, Chase Utley. A picture was taken of Utley signing his autograph on a Phillies hat for an eager Smeltzer, who was then a patient at St. Christopher’s Hospital in Philadelphia.

RELATEDWWE Vet David Otunga Helps His Niece, 24, Secure a Heart Transplant: We Are ‘Overjoyed’

“The picture of me and Chase has been in the living room for a long time,” Smeltzer, 22, told the news outlet. “When I go back home, it’s always very humbling to see that picture because of where I’m at today. It’s crazy to believe that I was going through such a hard time at such a young age, and how far I’ve grown.”

In the years since, Smeltzer has maintained his love of baseball, and continued playing the game when he entered college. In 2016, he was selected in the fifth round of the MLB draft by the Los Angeles Dodgers, and his cancer is now in remission, according to the LA Daily News. A year before Smeltzer’s selection in the draft, Chase Utley was traded from the Phillies to the Dodgers, where he has played ever since.

Smeltzer has since been a pitcher in the Dodgers’ farm system in the minor leagues, and during spring training this year, the team brought him into the clubhouse where manager Dave Roberts had the picture of Smeltzer and Utley in hand.

After telling the team Smeltzer’s unlikely story, Utley and the pitching prospect had a chance to reunite, more than a decade after taking their picture together in Philadelphia.

“I was able to play through it,” Smeltzer said to Utley in the Dodgers clubhouse. “I just wanted to thank you for everything you did. It means a lot.”

Smeltzer is now leading a campaign to raise funds for Katie’s Krusaders, an organization that provides financial and personal support for kids with cancer or other childhood diseases. He hopes to raise money for every strikeout he throws this season, so he can help other children who are in the same position he once was.

“It’s a pretty special and unique story with Devin,” Utley told Sportsnet of Smeltzer. “I can’t even imagine what he was going through, what his parents were going through… Hopefully, at some point, he’ll be pitching at Dodger Stadium.”

Two Pups Took Engagement Pics And The Cuteness Is Off The Charts

Spring is here and puppy love is in the air for this canine couple.

In March, Luna, a Pomeranian, and Sebastian, a French bulldog, of the Instagram account @SebastianLovesLuna, posed for some paws-itively precious engagement pics around Washington D.C.

Sebastian and Luna’s owner, Emily Abril, who used to be a portrait photographer, got behind the lens for the shoot.

“I’ve always described them as an old married couple,” Abril told The Huffington Post. “One minute they are licking each other’s faces, the next minute they are barking and chasing after each other and then they’re napping.”

But it wasn’t love at first sight for the pup pair.

“Luna came a month prior and ruled the house,” Abril said. “Now, they balance each other out. They are playful and loving.”

Sebastian “pupped” the question at the Lincoln Memorial in June 2016. Now the wedding is set for either this fall or next spring. Abril hopes to set up a wedding registry for the couple that will raise money for an animal welfare organization.

For more on Sebastian and Luna’s adventures, head over to Instagram.

Mom Thanks Kind Cashier Who Took The Time To Comfort Her Restless Son

A routine shopping trip turned into something more for one mom after a cashier went “above and beyond his duty” for her son.

On Feb 18, Lauren Walker visited a Marks and Spencer food hall in Scotland with her 10-month-old son and her mother. During their shopping trip, Walker’s son, Alistair, grew restless. When the family reached the checkout, Alistair recognized the cashier as the man who said, “hello” to him when they first arrived and yelled, “Hiya hiya!” That’s when the cashier went above and beyond and comforted Walker’s restless son by letting him help behind the checkout.

Walker was so moved by the cashier’s kindness that she posted about her experience on the official Marks and Spencer Facebook page and shared a video of Alistair helping the cashier. In her post, she wrote about how much her son enjoyed spending time with him.

“He smiled and squealed the full way through it because he was having so much fun!” she wrote in her post. “This man made my shopping experience so much easier and the fact he took time with my son as well was great.”

Walker told The Huffington Post she and her son have never experienced something like this while out shopping. Once Walker finished up paying, Alistair didn’t want to leave his new friend.

“This is why I recorded it while my mum was packing the shopping because it was so kind of him and you could see he was great with kids,” she said. “My son wasn’t happy when it was time to leave because he was enjoying himself too much!”

Walker hasn’t seen the cashier since, but did receive a reply via a Facebook comment from Marks and Spencer.

“It looks like your little one was having a great time and it’s really good to see how our colleague was so helpful and interactive with our customers,” the company wrote. “I’ll make sure this is shared on our internal employee page and that our Store Manager gets to hear about it too! We can then give him the recognition he deserves.”

When asked if she had anything else she’d like to say to the kind cashier, Walker said she wanted to say, “thank you.”

“He went above and beyond his duty of care just because he thought all he was doing was his job!”

Tired Of Baby Questions, This Couple Took Pics With Their Pup Instead

Australian couple Matt Kay and Abby Lee were tired of people asking them when they were going to have kids.

With the the help of their photographer friend Elisha Collins of Elisha Minette Photography, the couple of two years came up with the idea of of doing a newborn-style photo shoot with their canine bundle of joy instead.

“Our families joke around about when are we having kids,” Abby told The Huffington Post. “We thought the newborn shoot would be a humorous response.”

“We came up with the idea when we were on the long drive home from picking Humphrey up from the groodle (golden retriever-poodle mix) breeder,” Elisha told HuffPost. “Abby and I have the craziest sense of humor and we feed off of each other with ideas.”

The pictures of the impossibly photogenic pup and his fur parents began to go viral after Elisha posted them to her Facebook page earlier this week.

“We did this shoot just for a little bit of humor between ourselves and our closest family and friends that have the same sense of humor as us,” she said. “We did not expect this to get as big as it has.”

Elisha stressed that the photo session was not intended to make fun of new parents or those who enjoying sharing about their kids on social media.

“This was just clean, simple Sunday afternoon fun,” she added.

Zoe Saldana’s Husband Took Her Last Name—Against Her Wishes

Zoe Saldana's 2013 wedding to smoking-hot artist Marco Perego was shrouded in such mystery, the world didn't really know it had happened until reports about a supposed summer wedding started surfacing the following fall. And…

Zoe Saldana Doesn’t Get Why Everyone’s Shocked Her Husband Took Her Name

Zoe Saldana is here to remind men that it’s NBD to take your wife’s last name.

“Fathers, sons, brothers, men everywhere: Your legacy will not perish if you take your partner’s surname, or she keeps hers,” the actress wrote in a June 8 Facebook post.

In an interview for the July cover story of InStyle, Saldana revealed that her husband, Italian artist Marco Perego, chose to adopt her last name after their 2013 marriage.

“I tried to talk him out of it. I told him, ‘If you use my name, you’re going to be emasculated by your community of artists, by your Latin community of men, by the world’,” she told InStyle. “But Marco looks up at me and says [she puts on a cute Italian accent], ‘Ah, Zoe, I don’t give a sheet.’”

The news made headlines across the web (including in this publication), because, it’s still the assumed default for a woman who marries a man to change her name to match his — however retro that may seem. According to a 2013 YouGov poll , 61 percent of respondents thought that women should take their husbands’ last names, while less than half of those polled even thought that a man should be allowed to take his wife’s name.

Saldana shared her thoughts on Facebook about the public reaction to her husband’s name. “Why is it so surprising, shocking, eventful that a man would take his wife’s surname?,” she asked. “Women have never been asked if its ok for them to give up their names — why doesn’t that make the news?”

She went on to reassure men that their identities would not be erased by a simple name change, imploring us all the rethink the way we define what being a masculine man means:

Men, you will not cease to exist by taking your partner’s surname. On the contrary — you’ll be remembered as a man who stood by change. I know our sons will respect and admire their father more because their father lead by example.
Gentlemen, I implore you to think outside the box- remove the box altogether. Let’s redefine masculinity. A real “man” leads along side his partner. A real man accepts his mortality. A real man acknowledges that nothing can be done alone.

(You can read the full Facebook post below.)

Fathers, sons, brothers, men everywhere: Your legacy will not perish if you take your partner’s surname, or she keeps…

Viola Davis Refused To Do ‘How To Get Away With Murder’ Unless Annalise Took Off Her Wig

In one of the most memorable scenes of this year’s television season, Viola Davis’ “How to Get Away with Murder” character Annalise Keating removed her wig, jewelry and makeup on screen.

As it turns out, that scene was integral to Davis’ decision to take on the role, according to comments the actress made at the show’s recent For Your Consideration panel (via Vulture):

There was something for me that I didn’t buy about Annalise in private. It felt like who she was in private had to be diametrically opposed to who she was in public. And so in order to do that, I felt like I had to physically take the wig off. I mean, I have no eyebrows. I have eyelashes that I put on, and there was something extremely vulnerable about that act — and I know it seems like a very simple act at the end of the day — but for me, that simple act really surmounted to something very powerful in the end, because what it was was someone being very, very private in public, which is absolutely the cornerstone of what we do as artists.

The scene was but one of many that broke network TV barriers in the first season of “How to Get Away with Murder,” which garnered praise for its depiction of gay sex and nuanced exploration of sexual violence.

For more of Davis’ comments from the panel, head over to Vulture.

It Took Getting Engaged For Me To Learn The Truth About Marriage Proposals

2015-05-15-1431713785-1163422-whatgettingengagedtaughtmeabout2.png

Few people get to spend their workdays watching heartfelt proposal videos all day, and I count myself lucky to be one of them. As the Senior Editor of HuffPost Weddings, I also read tons of meet-cute stories, attend bridal fashion shows and scroll through hundreds of gorgeous wedding photos. It’s a tough job, but someone’s gotta do it.

When I first started doing this job two years ago, every flash mob, Jumbotron and writing-in-the-sky marriage proposal could bring me to tears. This is the best proposal ever, I thought again and again. How perfectly suited this Bruno Mars song is to marriage proposals! We featured flash mob after flash mob after flash mob. We — and our audience — couldn’t get enough.

Now, as Associate Editor Kelsey Borresen and I joke, it takes a lot to impress us. Run-of-the-mill flash mobs usually result in eye rolls. And don’t even get me started on the latest wave of fake arrest marriage proposals (who wants to be scared to death before one of the happiest moments of your life? No one).

When a staff writer from another department pitches a proposal video, they’ll often tell me it’s the “best marriage proposal ever.” Their copy exudes a lovely naiveté, the writing filled with over-the-top adjectives and pronouncements. I’m not really a fan of calling anything “the best ever.” Certainly there is something out there that is even bigger, better, more meaningful and over the top. Why put all our eggs in one Tiffany blue box — err, basket?

But after my boyfriend of 10 years (hey, I edit HuffPost Divorce too) popped the question recently, it became clear that, in fact, my proposal was the best proposal. He did it in a completely surprising way — on a Friday morning before I had left for the office, during a routine workday task. It was the last story idea in Kelsey’s morning pitch e-mail: High school sweetheart proposes to long-time girlfriend. I clicked and found out that the proposal was mine.

What followed (after the initial crying, tackling him to the floor and calling everyone I know) was a full day of surprises including lunch at our first date spot, dinner with our families (with a surprise visit from my sister, who flew in from Arizona), and a surprise party at my parents’ house with all my closest friends. It was perfect. And everyone I told about my proposal agreed.

In the week after we got engaged, I joked with colleagues that I was going to write a story called “10 Signs My Marriage Proposal Was The Best Proposal Ever” (that, or “Proof That My Marriage Proposal Was The Best Proposal”). What I realized in recounting the story again and again was that my proposal was the best proposal because it was just that — my proposal. My boyfriend — err, fiancé (still getting used to that!) — could have asked me to marry him in any number of ways and all of those ways would have been perfect because he is the perfect person for me, and me for him.

So go ahead — plan an elaborate flash mob, a scavenger hunt or simply roll over in bed and say, “Hey, wanna make this official?” Your marriage proposal will be the best proposal ever because it’s yours. And I promise, no more eye-rolling from me.

John Mayer Just Took Instagram Filters To The Next Level

We all have that one friend who takes choosing an Instagram filter very seriously. You know, the ones who debate whether to go with the dramatic Brannan or the bright X Pro II for so long that they start to look older than the selfie they’re trying to perfect? Well, today that friend is John Mayer, because the singer did to his face what a Brita filter does to water, or what Grey Goose does to vodka. He filtered the hell out of it:

So good to see my friend Ricky again. It’s been a while.

And if you (understandably) didn’t recognize him from the Instagram photo, Mayer is posing with Allison Williams’ fiancé, Ricky Van Veen.

When I Was a Kid, We Took Pictures With Cameras

We all know there’s more than one downside to the omnipresent smartphone–the invention of the ‘selfie’, the calloused thumbs, the inability to bullshit our way through a discussion about, well, anything that can be Googled.

But you know what my favorite upside is? The ability to take a picture at any given moment. No, I’m not talking about catching a nominee for the ‘People of Wal-Mart’ blog; I’m talking about taking pictures of my kids.

2014-12-06-IMG_4837.JPG

The truth is, I really didn’t take any pictures at all before I succumbed to the allure of that sleek rectangular gadget. In fact, everything I’ve learned about photography has indirectly been the result of stumbling across a photo app a few years ago. Now that I’m able to take photos at any given moment, countless events that were once seemingly insignificant (like, uh, dental visits) have been captured on-the-fly, off-the-cuff, and even in middle of the street. The fact is, even if I had owned a camera, those spur-of-the-moment memories would likely have never been immortalized had I not been wielding my trusty iPhone.

2014-12-06-IMG_2094.JPG

So the next time someone collides into me on the street whilst checking Facebook, I’m going to think about that perfect photo of my kid–the one that was taken by a phone, the one that’s going be sitting on the mantle for the next six years, and yes, even the one that’s going to be sitting on a hard drive for the next sixteen.

2014-12-06-IMG_2307.JPG

Sure, I’ll likely succumb to carpal tunnel syndrome within the next year or two and end up with the permanent posture of someone decades older than me, but that hike we took on our family vacation? It holds a permanent place via some pixels in square form.

2014-12-06-IMG_2092.JPG

And when I’m in line for a coffee and the guy in front of me is haphazardly ordering a chai tea latte with almond milk and an extra pump of chai while day trading stocks, instead of whacking him upside the head, I’ll just take it as a trade-off. He gets to be obnoxious, I get to remember that look on my daughter’s face when she’s grown, and maybe her kids will get to know her a little bit better because of it.

2014-12-06-IMG_6794.JPG

Admittedly, not all of the disadvantages involve other people, and the perceived urgency my phone causes in me is distressing. It’s just slightly possible that I don’t need to take my phone in with me every time I use the bathroom. And it’s probably a good idea to actually interact with my kids in addition to getting the perfect shot for Instagram.

2014-12-06-IMG_2271.JPG

Maybe, if I’m lucky, my kids will take up photography. Or at least look back on the photos I’ve taken and appreciate them. It’s possible that in a few short years they will have their own phones and will be telling me to go stand in front of some foggy woodland scene so they can post it somewhere. I certainly hope so. I’ll try not to be annoyed.

This is the moving story of Little Benjamin, a lovebird chick suffering from splayed leg syndrome.

Texas, Ohio Fight Over Air Force One Where Lyndon B. Johnson Took Oath Of Office

By Jon Herskovitz

AUSTIN, Texas, Jan 15 (Reuters) – The foundation that backs the library for President Lyndon Baines Johnson is locking horns with the Air Force museum in Ohio over an Air Force One jet that Johnson admirers believe belongs in Texas.

The LBJ Foundation is seeking to have the modified Boeing 707 that came into service under President John F. Kennedy and in which Johnson took the oath of the presidency hours after Kennedy’s assassination, transported to Austin and put on display near the LBJ Presidential Library.

“It would mean so much and it would become one of the most popular tourist destinations in Texas,” said Tom Johnson, chairman emeritus of the LBJ Foundation.

Even though the plane served as the primary presidential jet from 1962 to 1972 – from Kennedy through Richard Nixon – the foundation believes it is inextricably linked to the Johnson presidency.

Along with the move and display at the LBJ library on the University of Texas campus, the foundation also wants to restore the interior of the plane, also known as Special Air Mission (SAM) 26000, to better reflect the state it was in when it was used as the primary presidential plane.

There is a separate Air Force One plane on display at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Library in California, which is on loan from the U.S. Air Force.

The LBJ Foundation, which has identified sources of funding for the move, display and interior restoration, is hoping the Air Force will lend out this plane in a similar fashion.

“They have many, many spectacular planes at Dayton. We just want one of them,” said Johnson, who is not related to the 36th U.S. President.

The National Museum of the U.S. Air Force, located at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base near Dayton, said the plane is staying in Ohio.

“The museum is not considering a donation or loan of SAM 26000 to the LBJ Library & Museum or to any other entity,” museum spokesman Rob Bardua said in an email.

The plane was used by U.S. presidents through 1992. The museum sees the plane that carried presidents, heads of state and other dignitaries as an important historic aircraft.

“It was built to indicate American air superiority to the world and was not uniquely identified to one president,” Bardua said.

The plane flew Nixon to China and the Soviet Union for historic meetings at the height of the Cold War. It was also used by former Secretary of State James Baker for talks with Iraqi leaders about removing their troops from Kuwait ahead of the 1991 Gulf War.

The plane is painted to reflect its exterior in 1963 and the interior is configured for its use in 1998, when it was delivered to the museum. (Reporting by Jon Herskovitz, editing by Scott Malone and Gunna Dickson)
