Alexis Arquette’s Sister Patricia Celebrates the Transgender Pioneer’s Legacy 6 Months After Death: ‘I Wouldn’t Change a Thing’

Alexis Arquette was undoubtedly one of the first transgender activists in Hollywood.

Coming from a family of actors, Alexis was accepted when she came out. Her sister Patricia was concerned about the impact her sister’s revelation would have on her career — though Alexis was not.

“Alexis was really also very powerful, and strong, and really brave, very brave,” Patricia told PEOPLE while at the Let’s Toast the Extraordinary Achievements of Alexis Arquette pre-GLAAD Media Awards dinner sponsored by Ketel One in Hollywood.

“We had a long conversation when Alexis told me that she was transgender, and I said, ‘Okay. So what do you do about Hollywood? How will you get work? People are not progressive in Hollywood and it could really negatively impact your career. Are you thinking everything through?’ ” the Academy Award Winner recalled.

Patricia affirms that despite the obvious risks, Alexis was confident in her decision to come out in Hollywood.

“Alexis was very brave to make that decision,” her sister continued. “She really wanted to help progress the world and move the world forward.”

Alexis died last September at age 47, but childhood memories of Alexis are still vivid for Patricia.

“Alexis and David both had these beds that sort of look like space pods. They were like these tubes that you could get in,” the 48-year-old recalled. “My mom was making Alexis’ bed and realized that a big chunk of the mattress was missing out of the corner. She said, ‘Alexis what happened to your mattress?’ Alexis said, ‘I need the foam to make a puppet.’ So she pulled out this puppet with this little sparkly dress on it and my mom said, ‘Oh, my god, it’s gorgeous. My kids are so creative.’ “

Patricia was joined at the event by brothers David and Richmond along with her boyfriend Eric White. Not only were they there to remember their sister, but also to honor the many lives that she touched.

“We’ve gotten so many letters. I’ve had letters from people all over the world who said their first experience of a trans person was with Alexis,” Patricia shared in awe of her late sister.  “Watching Alexis in Last Exit to Brooklyn — which was Alexis’ first movie — she played a trans person in the 1950s which was considered really a crossdresser at that time. That’s what people called trans people then.”

Patricia also noted ,”Alexis was incredibly creative our whole lives. I grew up with Alexis putting on makeup, trying on high heels …. Alexis was my best friend when we grew up, so I wouldn’t change one thing about Alexis.”

TLC’s ‘Say Yes To The Dress’ Will Welcome A Transgender Bride

TLC’s “Say Yes to the Dress” will break fresh ground later this month when the reality series features an openly transgender bride.

Hairstylist and makeup artist Gabrielle Gibson, 33, will select her wedding dress on the March 25 episode of “Say Yes to the Dress.” The New Jersey native, who works as a hairstylist and makeup artist, announced the news in a Feb. 28 Facebook post, along with a snapshot of herself posing in a lacy, mermaid-style gown at Kleinfeld Bridal in New York.

“This so super exciting and surreal to me all at the same time,” Gibson wrote on Facebook. Being picked to be on “Say Yes to the Dress,” she added, was “an amazing experience, and the crew was an absolute dream.”

Gibson will tie the knot with her fiancé, Jaden Rogers, in a “country chic” November ceremony. She isn’t the first openly trans bride to be featured on the franchise; that honor goes to Precious Davis, who appeared on “Say Yes to the Dress: Atlanta” last year. She is, however, the first to appear on the original “Say Yes to the Dress,” which is based in New York.

Calling herself a “huge fan” of “Say Yes to the Dress,” Gibson told PinkNews that she’d like her appearance to help educate viewers on trans issues, even if it’s just in a small way. “With everything going on in the media surrounding violence towards trans women of color,” she said, “I wanted to show that we are people who just want to live and be happy.”

Being able to appear on the show, she added, was “a life experience and memory” that she will forever cherish. “It just felt so amazing to be treated as a bride and a human being, and not a sideshow,” she said. “It’s validating to know that someone thought I was interesting enough to be a part of the show and wanted to hear my story.”

Rogers, who also identifies as transgender, feels similarly. “I hope that we serve as an inspiration for those out there who have ever felt unwanted, to know that we are here living as our true selves,” he told LGBTQ blog Unicorn Booty, “and that trans women of color are beautiful and deserve to be treated with dignity and respect.”

Transgender Model To Caitlyn Jenner: ‘We Do Not Need You To Save Us’

Transgender model Isis King tweeted a blunt open letter to Caitlyn Jenner on Friday after the reality star criticized the Trump administration’s decision to rescind Obama-era guidance that protected transgender students in public schools.

King, the first openly transgender contestant to compete on “America’s Next Top Model,” calls out Jenner in the letter, referencing an incident at the TransNation Queen USA Pageant in October in which Jenner allegedly ignored King’s presence, then cut in front of her to take an empty elevator for herself and her team.

“I could not believe that this happened to me and immediately felt as if I had just been asked to move to the back of the bus,” King writes in the letter. “It was as if I was not good enough, not worthy enough, not rich enough, not famous enough to ride with these three white women. … The amount of privilege that was thrown in my face made me feel so uncomfortable.”

King seemed to suggest that the insult represents a larger issue in the trans community when it comes to power, privilege and visibility: “I have, like so many women of color, helped blazed [sic] trails for our sisters, brothers and siblings, and I have seen how you treated me. We do not need you to save us.”

On Thursday, Jenner tweeted a video message directed at President Donald Trump “from one Republican to another,” calling Trump’s blow to the rights of trans students a “disaster” and telling the president “we’ll see you in court.”

The video was met with harsh criticism from parts of the LGBTQ community. Jenner was an outspoken supporter of Trump during the 2016 election ― even attending his inauguration.

UPDATE: 1:25 p.m. ― King said in an interview with that Jenner called following the tweet of the open letter, and the pair have now “resolved everything.”

Caitlyn Jenner Says GOP Is ‘So Off’ On Transgender Issues

Caitlyn Jenner has repeatedly made headlines for her staunchly Republican views, but she isn’t afraid to criticize her party’s presidential hopefuls.

In fact, the 66-year-old Olympian told The Cut in an April 27 interview that she believes Ted Cruz and his supporters aren’t considering the big picture when they chime in about the so-called “bathroom bills” that are a part of anti-LGBT laws that have been adopted in North Carolina and elsewhere.

She suggested that Cruz was misinformed when he implied that allowing transgender people to use restrooms that best correspond with their gender identity will only prompt male “sexual predators” to enter the ladies’ room.

“The issue isn’t about men being in women’s restrooms, okay?” she said. “That is illegal.” She added that she and other trans people just want to “pee and get the hell out of there! It’s so simple!”

Jenner also thinks Cruz and other Republicans aren’t taking into account the public safety of transgender youth, who are at an increased risk of depression and suicide compared to their cisgender peers, when he expresses support for “bathroom bills.”

“We have a nine-times-higher suicide rate in the trans community than the general public,” she said.

She isn’t off, either: last year, a study by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and the Williams Institute, which analyzed results from the National Transgender Discrimination Survey, found that 41 percent of all transgender people will try to kill themselves at some point in their lives, compared with 4.6 percent of the general public, USA Today reported

In an interview with Time magazine this week, Jenner suggested that those who back “bathroom bills” like the one in North Carolina are “so off.”

“They need some help,” she said. “And I’m here to help.”

Meanwhile, Jenner offered faint praise for Donald Trump in a speech at the Time 100 gala this week, and said she took the Republican frontrunner up on his pledge to allow trans people to use the appropriate restroom

When she experienced a call of nature during her time in New York, Jenner said she headed straight for the Trump Tower to use its facilities.

“I obeyed all the rules, I promise you, I didn’t throw any feminine products down the toilet,” she joked, according to People. “And it actually worked out quite well. It was very good.”

We’ll say this about Jenner’s attempts at reconciling her politics with her transgender identity: at least they’re earnest.

‘Inside Out: Portraits Of Cross-Gender Children’ Beautifully Documents Transgender Kids

For the past 12 years, Dutch photographer Sarah Wong has documented the lives and experiences of a group of children who have transitioned — or are in the process of transitioning — to live as their authentic selves.

Wong captured these images of children involved with VU University in Amsterdam, where they engaged in a type of therapy that aimed to support children who experience gender dysphoria. A number of these kids took or have taken puberty blockers in order to delay the effects of puberty until they decide how they want to live their lives. However, the photos were taken at the kids’ homes, schools, ballet classes — spaces where they felt most comfortable.

Wong shared the images with the world through a book called Inside Out: Portraits Of Cross-Gender Children, published in 2011. A medical research journalist from the Dutch Volkskrant newspaper, Ellen de Visser, wrote the book’s text.

The Huffington Post chatted with Wong this week about the children in these photos, as well as her own experiences documenting the lives of these kids.

The Huffington Post: Who are the children captured in these photographs?
Sarah Wong: These are Dutch, cross-gender children aged 5 up to 17. I photographed them since 2003 by request of their parents. I worked as a photographer in health care and had just finished a photo book about a children’s hospital. We met, and the cross-gender children immediately touched my heart.

“At the end we’re all the same — souls who want to be happy and live compassionately.”

What was your goal/intention with photographing these children?
My goal was to help them to find happiness. With their portraits I wanted to empower them — no sensational journalistic approach. Not a boy in a dress or a girl with a football. When people saw the portraits they said, “lovely children, but who are they?”

The photographs showed lovely children, with a strong consciousness: this is who I truly am. At the end we’re all the same — souls who want to be happy and live compassionately.

What were the experiences of these children like at this European clinic?
The children had very good experiences at the VUmc because of the puberty blockers. The greatest nightmare from a cross-gender child is your body growing the wrong direction. A boy doesn’t want breasts and girls don’t want to have a beard. The puberty-blockers gave relief and thinking time, and they could grow up like “normal” teenagers.

Why, as a photographer, is providing these stories and experiences visibility so important?
As an artist your work can have a great impact on public opinion. I was always very interested in identity and compassion and felt sometimes more like a psychologist or detective-profiler, than a photographer.

I realized very young, at age 21 in art school, that as an artist, your photographs can have a great impact on the public opinion. I was very much inspired by Robert Capa and Henry Cartier Bresson, Magnum photographers.

It’s very important for society to see these images — theres nothing sensational about transgender kids. Again, at the end we’re pretty much the same: we’re all souls who want to live happy and give meaning to our life and others.

It was during the project that I suddenly understood why these photos were incredibly important for the kids. They showed who they really were. The photographs were almost forensic proof for them.

Mostly, photography is about the emotions and ego from the artist. Well, during this project my ego shrunk every photoshoot because I was in service of them. And I liked very much the idea that the photographs we made were for a greater purpose. Unfortunately, I could never expose them in a museum because of the integrity of the children. Now that they’re older I’m looking for a great spot. Society and public opinion has changed.

What do you hope viewers take away from these images?
I truly hope The Huffington Post audience will take the compassionate way of looking. This means a way of looking with the heart — free from personal emotions.

If you get emotional with someone’s suffering you are not in a position of empowering someone. The very first doctor who helped these children was a pioneer as well. During the weekend he was a deacon in a church. The reason he wanted to help transgender gender people was because of this compassionate way of looking at them — not as a doctor but as a human being.
