Former Special Education Teacher Allegedly Caught with Victim While Awaiting Sex Assault Trial

A former special education teacher in Connecticut who is awaiting trial for allegedly having sex with two students is in more trouble after authorities say that she was recently caught with one of her alleged victims in her car, PEOPLE confirms.

Laura Ramos, 32, was charged last year with two counts of second-degree sexual assault after police claim she admitted to having sex with one of her 18-year-old special education students.

She was later hit with an additional sexual assault charge after police said that she allegedly had sexual contact with another student.

As she awaited trial, Ramos was told not to have contact with her alleged victims and was freed on $ 50,000 bond.

Instead, according to police, Ramos has continued to have contact with one of her former students. Police say she was pulled over in late in June a beachside community in Connecticut where she was found to be driving with one of the alleged victims.

As a result, Ramos has been charged with violation of a protective order, according to court records viewed by PEOPLE.

The case against her began last year after the principal of Central High School in Bridgeport, where she taught, called police on June 9, 2017. According to the police report obtained by PEOPLE at the time, another teacher reported that a student had told him Ramos was allegedly having sex with one of her special education students.

According to this teacher, the student claimed that Ramos had been texting him about “her guy,” who didn’t want to have sex anymore and whom this student believed to be the victim.

This student said the victim was often seen with Ramos — “making eyes at each other, like flirting” — according to the Connecticut Post.

Ramos initially denied the allegations when questioned by police on June 12 but, in a later interview, allegedly admitted to having sex with one of her students from December to April, usually in her car, according to the paper.

At the time, Ramos resigned from her job “in lieu of … termination proceedings,” according to local TV station WVIT.

Prosecutors are seeking to revoke Ramos’ bond and remand her to prison while she awaits trial. A hearing will be held on Friday.

Ramos’ attorney, Edward Gavin, did not respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment on Thursday, but he told the Post, “Laura Ramos has faithfully attended every court appearance and will continue to do so. We will address the motion at the hearing.”

If convicted, she faces up to 10 years in prison.

Family of Tenn. Teen Elizabeth Thomas Prepares for ‘Highly Emotional’ Trial of Ex-Teacher and Alleged Kidnapper

On July 25, Tad Cummins, the 51-year-old Tennessee man accused of kidnapping his 15-year-old student for 38 days and taking her across the country, will go on trial in federal court.

Cummins is currently behind bars in Nashville, charged with kidnapping and sex crimes in the alleged abduction of Elizabeth Thomas, then a freshman at Culleoka Unit School in Maury County. Meanwhile, Elizabeth’s father says the family is still coming to terms with the “horrific experience” he allegedly put them and their loved one through.

“It’s a highly emotional issue,” Anthony Thomas tells PEOPLE. “ is going to be very difficult for everybody.”

Both authorities and Elizabeth’s family allege Cummins “groomed” Elizabeth for months before the alleged abduction. Shortly after the pair was reported missing, becoming the subject of an ongoing AMBER Alert, Cummins was fired from his teaching job after having previously been suspended for allegedly kissing Elizabeth on school grounds.

It is unclear at this time whether Elizabeth will testify, but the family plans on attending the trial to show their support for her.

“We’ve spoken many times as a family,” Anthony says. “ is just something we’re going to have to go through.”

When she returned home after being missing for more than a month, Elizabeth was taken to an undisclosed location to work with psychologists and counselors. While she was not physically harmed, she had allegedly undergone a series of traumatic events, authorities said.

Thomas would not disclose how Elizabeth is currently doing but he said that with the family’s support and help of counselors, she is making progress.

“We are doing fine,” Thomas says. “It’s just a process you have to go through. being very supportive.”

• Want to keep up with the latest crime coverage? Click here to get breaking crime news, ongoing trial coverage and details of intriguing unsolved cases in the True Crime Newsletter.

On April 20, 38 days after she went missing, Elizabeth was recovered safely in Northern California where investigators say she had been staying in a remote cabin with her accused abductor. Cummins was arrested and later extradited back to Tennessee, where he awaits trial.

If convicted, Cummins faces a minimum of 10 years to life in prison.

PEOPLE’s calls to Cummins’ public defender, Dumaka Shabazz, were not returned.

He also faces charges in California for alleged kidnapping and possession of stolen property.

Cummins’ public defender in California, Benjamin Galloway, issued a statement defending his client, claiming he has “no history of violence and no criminal history whatsoever,” and that he didn’t coerce, force or threaten Elizabeth, Cummins’ former student at the Culleoka Unit School in Maury County, Tennessee.

The Thomas family attorney, Jason Whatley has said any suggestion that Elizabeth might have gone willingly is “amazingly absurd.”

“This is classic grooming and manipulation,” he adds. “And I predict this case will be studied years in the future about how authority figures like Tad Cummins can mess up young children who believe their lies and are manipulated into doing things they would never do.”

The Trial of Monogamy

The Trial of Monogamy

A male child Udoka, born to a family of five daughters and one son is raised by his single mother after the boy’s father dies prematurely in a rural third world community. The boy drops out of school at a very early age and joins the company of village loafers called “ofekes” and “ofo-ogolis.” These specialize in hanging around where there are wedding ceremonies, burial, and chieftaincy installation ceremonies, venues where there will be free food and free drinks. During one of such ceremonies in which Mr. Odike his cousin is taking a second wife, the uneducated Udoka sees, and falls in love with Chioma who is educated and who hails from a completely different social background being a catechist’s daughter. Udoka gets rebuffed. Twist of fate again brings both young people together and through encouragement from Chioma, Udoka goes to school, progresses, and ultimately marries Chioma. Further twist of fate sees the couple move over to Atlanta in America where Chioma trains for, and becomes a registered nurse and starts earning well. Her new situation positions Chioma into seeing Dr. Gerald an attending consultant in the hospital where she works. Chioma falls in love with the rich medical doctor and without provocation, divorces her beleaguered husband who, laden with the burden of debts and child support, flees from Atlanta back to his Akunwanta native land. Chioma gets disappointed by Dr. Gerald after she aborts a baby she was expecting for him. The polygamous nature of the common Akunwanta origin of the divorced former couple holds out the only opportunity whereby Chioma can find a place as a second wife to a now prosperous and polygamous Udoka. The monogamy by law policy in Atlanta as opposed to the accepted polygamy by culture in Akunwanta plays out favorably for both parties as it becomes possible for Udoka to remain monogamous in Atlanta but polygamous in Akunwanta. One man’s apparent poison plays out as another man’s delicious meat. Will the one learn from the
