Naomi Watts’ Latest Trick: The Ukulele

Because they embody characters will all sorts of talents and experiences, actors get to learn a lot of nifty skills. Naomi Watts, for example, picked up the ukulele and video games ― sort of ― for her new movie, “The Book of Henry,” which opens this weekend.

Watts plays a single mother named Susan who cedes most adult responsibility ― you know, paying bills and cleaning and managing the family’s stock trading ― to her precocious 11-year-old Henry (Jaeden Lieberher). If she’s not scurrying to her waitressing job or schlepping her kids around in a beat-up station wagon, Sarah is probably playing violent video games or imbibing with her lush co-worker (Sarah Silverman). Not that she doesn’t adore her sons (she also has Henry, an 8-year-old played by Jacob Tremblay); she just plays a little fast and loose with the whole parenting thing.

One night, while tucking Henry and Peter into bed, Susan pulls out a ukulele and serenades them with a rosy sleepy-time song. That required a double whammy for Watts, who doesn’t play the ukulele and feels “very, very uncomfortable” singing.

“As an actor, you get to learn little bits of things through these characters,” she told HuffPost last month at the movie’s New York junket. “I remember one time I had to learn to ride a unicycle. Another time I hard to learn to play an Erik Satie piece on piano. And this time, the ukulele. But I don’t even know if I can still play it.”

Watts shot “The Book of Henry” in late 2015. Opening this weekend, the film is the latest addition to the actress’ busy 2017 slate, which started with festival holdovers “Chuck” and “Three Generations,” continued with a top-secret role in the “Twin Peaks” revival, and revs up even more with the lead role on Netflix’s forthcoming “Gypsy” and as the eccentric mother in the adaptation of Jeannette Walls’ best-selling memoir The Glass Castle

Watts is well aware that not all of these projects will find an instant shelf life. “Chuck” and “Three Generations” have already failed to crack $ 1 million at the box office. “Twin Peaks” may not be a ratings bonanza, but it’s a conversation-starter online thanks to its rabid fan base. And “The Book of Henry,” for all its tone-shifting madness, has the added credential of being the latest project from Colin Trevorrow, the director of “Safety Not Guaranteed,” “Jurassic World” and next year’s “Star Wars: Episode IX.”

“You just never know if people are going to be willing to receive it at that particular time,” Watts said. “It’s always a risk and it’s very painful when things don’t work out in the way that you’d hoped because you put so much into it, you really do. I never take on a project where I just sort of phone it in — I have to bleed for it.”

At least she can cross “ukulele” off her bucket list.

Viral Hair Tie Trick Helps Stressed-Out Parents Stay Sane

Calling all stressed-out parents trying to keep it together! This hair tie trick may be perfect for you.

On May 16, a mom named Shuana Harvey shared a technique that helped her “exercise patience with [her] oh so testy 4-year-old” on Facebook.

“I wore 5 rubber bands on my wrist from the time I got up, to the time I tucked him in just now. The 5 rubber bands represent every time you lose your cool or say something unkind to your child,” Harvey explained. “Every time that happens, you move one band to the other wrist. To ‘gain the band back,’ you must do 5 kind/positive things with your child (dance party, singing a song together, reading together, etc).”

The mom said she plans to use this hair tie trick until it becomes a second nature.

“I’ve found myself so incredibly stressed out, I beat my head against the wall daily because I don’t understand why my 4 year old insists on being disrespectful and a non listener,” she wrote. “I was to the point of crying at least every other day.”

After finishing the day with all five hair ties on the original wrist, Harvey said she felt proud of herself for keeping her cool. “I know it’s only day one, but I’m hopeful this will help our communication skills and our relationship,” she concluded. “If you find yourself being that ‘Angry Mom,’ try this!”

The Facebook post was shared over 11,500 times. Following the viral response, Harvey updated her post to note that she found this trick from blogger Kelly Holmes of “The (Reformed) Idealist Mom.”

In Holmes’ original blog post, “The Hair Tie Trick That Will Make You Go from Angry Mom to Happy Mom,” she shares her personal experience and also offers a “cheat sheet” for parents looking to implement her idea.

After seeing Harvey’s viral post spread throughout social media, the blogger wrote on Facebook, “Every time I see the original post featured somewhere new, I think of how many more parents and kids are feeling connected and having more FUN together because of this little trick.”

Magician Turns Girlfriend Into His Fiancee With His Best Trick Yet

For Neil Henry, the writing wasn’t on the wall, it was in a can of alphabet soup. And it spelled “–M-A-R-R-Y—M-E–“.

Henry, a professional magician, employed all his skills earlier this week to surprise his girlfriend, Charlie Gardner, by proposing to her in front of a live audience at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, inviting her on stage under the pretense of needing an assistant.

Henry set up the bit by first downing a cold can of alphabet soup and slurping up a long piece of string, then asking Gardner to join him on stage.

As she looked on suspiciously, Henry proceeded to slowly pull the string from his mouth. One by one, letters popped out, attached to the string as if by magic, slowly building to one big question.

Gardner reacted with disbelief at first, which quickly turned to shock and tears as she realized just what was happening.

“Having you in my life is real magic,” Henry told her as she stood on the side of the stage, “and I never want that magic to end.”

With a magical flourish, he then lit a piece of paper on fire, somehow turned it into a ring, and popped the question.

Gardner, in between squeals of “oh my god!” said yes.

In an email to The Huffington Post, Henry explained the alphabet soup bit regularly features in his show, though it involves a random audience member and a random word.

“When I decided to ask Charlie to marry me (easiest decision of my life by the way!!), the idea of vomiting up the proposal made me laugh so much I just had to do it,” he said. “I told my mum and she said eeewww… it was then that I knew it was perfect!”

He said he considered tying the ring to the end of the string, “but thought that was just a little too gross!”

Afterward, Henry said he bought the entire audience a drink, then the happy couple went out and grabbed a bite to eat.

“Charlie once said to me that if I was ever to propose it better be amazing as I’m a magician, so I was really keen to do something cool,” he added. “I’m so happy she liked it…and even more happy she said yes!!!”

Sure beats another rabbit-in-a-hat trick.

Don’t Buy Another Pair of Jeans Until You Read This: The Trick for Longer, Leaner Legs

It feels like there are a million different pairs of jeans out there. Some are good and some are…ugly. A pair that fits perfectly is worth a million bucks, while others that don’t do anything for your shape should be tossed as quickly as you can get your arms moving. And even though we just discovered that most of us have way too many pairs in the closet, there’s no time like the new year to toss what doesn’t work and invest in a pair that’s guaranteed to make you look ah-mazing.

dl-1961-jeans

For expert insight on fit, I consulted with Sarah Ahmed, creative director of DL1961, and pestered her about how my legs can look long and lean because, honestly, what girl doesn’t want that?

For length, your best bet is “by far a mid-rise skinny jean. An 8.5- to 9-inch rise really does miracles for the appearance of both the waist and legs.” As an alternative, try a kick flare (it’s the style on the far left above). It’s more subtle than the mega-bells you might be thinking of and can actually add inches, especially if you get your pair tailored to wear with heels or platforms.

If you want to slim stems, Sarah said to look for styles with longer inseams (ask a sales associate to identify some of their options) and try on the darkest shade possible. “A deep blue or black wash tends to smooth the legs, making them appear much leaner.” I brought up the question of moto ribbing, which I think looks eternally cool but can cut legs in a not-so-flattering way. “You can have too much horizontal detailing,” she warned me, suggesting I shop for “ribbing that’s slanted to not have that dreaded digging-in effect.”

What’s your current favorite pair of jeans? Is there a miracle brand that always looks good on you?

One Simple Trick to Dramatically Reduce Stress in 2014

Life rarely perfectly follows a plan.

But that doesn’t mean that you should just give up and not make a plan. It means that you should embrace a realistic expectation of what planning can and can not do for you:

Planning Can Not:

  • Guarantee everything will go perfectly.
  • Make all work fit within the desired estimates.
  • Eliminate all unexpected obstacles.

Planning Can:

  • Give you clarity on your priorities.
  • Reassure you that you’re not forgetting anything.
  • Allow you to get the most important things done on time.

The importance of realistic planning was re-emphasized for me in the completion of my book manuscript — my biggest professional project to date. I would like to share a bit with you about this simple yet very powerful secret to dramatically reduce stress:

On Time is Late
I’m a realistic optimist in the sense that I think very positively but I plan very responsibly. A very simple, yet important principle that I’ve incorporated into my planning is the idea that “on time is late.”

This principle resulted from the fact that I used to plan to do things “on time,” yet then sometimes ended up super stressed out or slightly missing deadlines whenever something unexpected happened.

To solve that problem and reduce my anxiety, I started setting personal deadlines for myself before the actual deadlines. With short, rather predictable projects, that could look like simply making a goal to get things done the day before they’re due. But with larger, more complex projects, like my book, that means pushing myself to try to get everything done far in advance of when it is due.

For instance, I finished writing my manuscript two and a half weeks before my deadline so that I would have a few weeks to go back through and do the style edits and proofreading. And I’m so glad that I did! This was my first book writing project, and I vastly underestimated how long it would take me to do all of the fine tuning and tweaks. But because I gave myself extra time and a personal deadline before my “real” one, I had the time to do what needed to be done and even to delegate some of the work.

This one mental shift in your approach to planning could dramatically decrease your stress levels. Here are some ideas of how to apply the concept of “on time is late” in other areas of your life:

  • Prepare for meetings the day before they happen, including reviewing notes, location and any items you need to bring.
  • Before you go to the grocery store, look out over the entire week to see if there are any gatherings like a BBQ or a birthday party that require some special food purchases.
  • When you have a special event that requires a gift, like a wedding, put time into your calendar to shop for the gift on the next possible free weekend or evening. You want to avoid that last-minute panic at Bed Bath & Beyond just minutes before the bride walks down the aisle.
  • If you have people working for you, delegate projects to them as soon as they come into your inbox instead of waiting until it’s too late to pass them off.
  • Plan on finishing any large projects like presentations or creative projects at least a couple of days before they are actually due so you have a buffer and time to “sit” on them.
  • If you need to leave the house at a certain time, get completely ready first and then work on optional activities.
  • When you have a big trip, go through a checklist like this one at least a week before you leave.
  • If it’s very important you arrive somewhere on time that’s very far away, try to arrive the night before. If it’s very important you arrive somewhere on time that’s near, give yourself at least a 30 minute buffer unless you’re in a big city in which you’ll want to plan even more time.

Aiming for early will play a dramatic role in helping you to achieve more success with less stress!
