Alexandra Shipp on Being True to Yourself

SHIPP SHAPE: Alexandra Shipp is the kind of person that offers to warm your hand as she shakes it on a cold winter morning in Milan. Best known for her role as the superhero Storm in “X-Men: Apocalypse,” she was eager to talk about her next film ahead of the Max Mara show. “Love, Simon” is based on the popular book “Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda” and due in theaters on March 16.
“It’s the first time a major studio — Fox 2000 — takes on a LGBTQ subject along the lines of “Sixteen Candles” or “Breakfast Club” and what coming out means for a young man,” Shipp said, referring to two iconic Eighties films.” It’s an invitation to be true to yourself, to who you are and not be defined by who you sleep with. It’s about integrity.” Shipp won’t linger in Italy as she is due back in the U.S. to promote the movie. No complaints from the actress, except perhaps for the travel fatigue, which she waved away in light of the opportunity to talk about the script. “I’m happy to do that. I believe it can save a lot of lives. The most important thing is to be true to

Mika Brzezinski Reveals True Story Behind President Trump’s ‘Face-Lift’ Tweet: He Begged for the Name of My Doctor

Mika Brzezinski is setting the record straight about President Trump‘s tweet regarding her alleged face-lift — which wasn’t a face-lift at all.

In a candid new interview with Vanity Fair published on Friday, the Morning Joe co-host reveals that she got a procedure to tighten the skin under her neck — and explains why the president knew about it.

Brzezinski says she started laughing when her coworker Willie Geist first showed her Trump’s widely derided tweets, in which he claimed she was “bleeding badly from a face-lift” when she and her fiancé and co-host Joe Scarborough visited the Trumps at Mar-a-Lago around New Year’s Eve.

“I said … ‘S–t. I kind of wanted to keep that to myself,’ ” she said of the procedure.

“I had a turkey neck. My mom told me to get it done,” she explained. “I was FaceTiming all my friends, telling them to get it done, that it wasn’t so bad.”

RELATED VIDEO: Exclusive: Natasha Stoynoff Speaks Out: ‘I Don’t Want Women to Feel Afraid’

Brzezinski said that she told Melania Trump about the procedure when the TV hosts stopped by Mar-a-Lago on New Year’s Eve. But it was the then-president-elect who was impressed.

“The irony of it all is that Donald kept saying, ‘That’s incredible. You can’t even tell. Who did it? Who did it?’ He kept asking for the name of the doctor,” Brzezinski recalls. “He literally asked 10 times. ‘Is he down here? Who is he?’ ”

A White House spokesman declined to comment on the subject.

Trump’s Twitter attack on Brzezinski — in which he also called her “crazy” and “low I.Q.” — isn’t the first one she’s been subjected to. Last summer, Trump tweeted that she was “a neurotic and not very bright mess!”

WATCH THIS: People at the White House: The Final Interview with The Obamas

Brzezinski and Scarborough told Vanity Fair that they actually mended fences with Trump at the time after his son-in-law and senior adviser, Jared Kushner, brokered a meeting with the four of them.

She said Trump even apologized for the tweet.

“Jared said we should end the meeting right then and there, because it was one of the only times he had heard him apologize,” Scarborough said.

This time, however, the couple said they are not holding out hope for an apology.

This Couple’s Splash Mountain Proposal Is A Disney Fantasy Come True

Nothing quite says true love like a thrilling plunge down a waterfall ― at least for Eugene Williams and his new fiancé, Chris.

Williams popped the question during the couple’s Monday visit to Disneyland, and his proposal was not for the faint at heart. While many couples opt to use Sleeping Beauty Castle or other Disney landmarks as a backdrop for the big moment, Williams asked Chris to marry him with a handmade sign on Splash Mountain’s climactic, 50-foot drop, and made clever use of the attraction’s on-ride camera to capture the moment for posterity with a souvenir photo.

Williams told HuffPost that he “always knew” that he wanted to propose to Chris at Disneyland, as the California-based couple visit the Anaheim theme park at least once a month. He said he chose Splash Mountain specifically after seeing a viral photo of a 16-year-old Disneyland visitor, who came out as gay to her parents in a similar fashion.

Despite Williams’s best effort, there were a few unexpected twists and turns along the way, as one would expect of a thrill ride proposal. “I wanted to get to the park before it opened, but Chris and I overslept and ran into traffic on the way. I was very angsty and nervous the whole time leading to him seeing the photo,” he explained. “I was worried my plan wouldn’t work and the park would be too crowded to get our own log ― after all, it was a hot day.”

Fortunately, a polite request to a Disney cast member ensured that Williams could pull off his plan without a hitch after all. “I was nervous the whole time on the ride, but just kept giving him hugs and kisses on the ride,” he said. “I told my boyfriend that we should pretend to be shocked for the photo. When the ride was over we walked to see our photo and he said he immediately knew when he saw the sign in the photo what it was and he cried!”

Williams uploaded the photo to Reddit Tuesday, where it had racked up over 1,200 comments as of Wednesday afternoon. “We are big Disney park fans, and now every time we go we’ll be reminded of that one time I proposed and he said yes,” he told HuffPost. “My fiancé means a lot to me and seeing the joy on his face when he saw the photo was priceless.”

28 Things Anyone With A Feminist Mother Knows To Be True

Anyone with a feminist for a mom knows she’s given you some of the best life advice you’ll ever get.

She’s a strong woman who makes her opinion known and doesn’t take shit from anyone. Whether she’s been working a 9 to 5 her entire life or has stayed at home to raise you ― she’s a role model in every way.

To celebrate Mother’s Day, HuffPost Women asked our readers to share one lesson they’ve learned from their feminist mothers growing up. The responses, paraphrased below, were heart-wrenching, honest and full of love.

So, for my feminist mom — and every other mother — this is for you. Here are 28 things anyone with a feminist mother knows to be true. Happy Mother’s Day!

1. Always trust your intuition. You did get it from your mama.

2. Get a good education so you can support yourself if need be.

3. Don’t ever accept anything less than equal treatment.

4. Exercise your hard-won right to vote.

5. Actions really do speak louder than words.

6. You can be delicate and strong at the same damn time.

7. Self-care is everything.

8. Being a strong woman means lifting up other women around you.

9. Relationships shouldn’t complete your life, they should complement it.

10. You don’t need to smile for anyone.

11. Don’t water yourself down to be “likable,” especially for a partner.

12. Gender roles are bullshit.

13. Value your intelligence, even when those around you don’t.

14. Life is about balance; don’t ever lose sight of your needs and wants.

15. Value diversity and acceptance.

16. A sense of humor goes a long way when you’re in a society built by and for men.

17. Respect and learn from the women who came before you.

18. Always maintain an avenue for financial independence.

19. Housework is a shared chore.

20. You can be a strong independent woman and still live happily ever after.

21. Speak your mind.

22. No one can validate your self worth except you.

23. Compassion is key.

24. Do what makes you happy.

25. Being a woman does not dictate what you can and cannot do.

26. Always negotiate your salary.

27. Don’t let anyone view you as a body instead of a mind.

28. You are always enough.

Woman Takes Engagement Photos With Her One True Love: Popeyes Chicken

When it comes to being engaged, Elyse Chelsea Clark is throwing caution to the wind, er, wing.

The New Orleans bartender is such a fan of Popeyes Chicken that she decided to do a series of engagement photos with her favorite fast food.

Then she posted the poultry-centered pics on Facebook with this note: “I’m finally engaged!”

The Popeyes engagement pics taken by photographer Whitney Tucker show Clark looking romantically at chicken boxes…

Strolling through the park with the object of her affection …

And smooching that box with the same passion that is typically reserved for love’s kiss.

Oh, and she likes the biscuits too.

The photos might be funny, but Clark’s passion for Popeyes is real and true.

“I have a really big love for Popeyes,” she told the New Orleans Times-Picayne. “I eat it all the time.”

The chain responded to Clark’s engagement spread with this tweet.

Caitlyn Jenner: Move On HB2 ‘NOT A True Repeal’

Transgender celebrity Caitlyn Jenner voiced her concerns on Twitter about the repeal of a controversial “bathroom law” in North Carolina.

The bill, HB2 ― which was signed into law last year ― bars people from using the bathroom that corresponds to their gender identity. On Thursday, North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper (D) signed legislation repealing the controversial bill. But critics, including Jenner, say it’s hardly enough.

Part of the new legislation bars North Carolina cities from passing their own nondiscrimination protections for LGBTQ people. The bathroom prohibition would also stay in effect until 2020.

Chris Sgro, executive director of Equality NC, said the repeal only doubles down on the original discriminatory bill.

“It doesn’t do anything to better the lives of LGBT North Carolinians,” Sgro said.

Jenner, an Olympic gold medal winner and reality show star, has faced criticism for her political opinions in the past. Most notably, she has praised President Donald Trump. On Twitter, critics reminded her of her support for the president.

“I am here, since I’m on the Republican side, to help the entire Republican Party do a better job when it comes to LBGT issues,” Jenner said last year. “I have kind of positioned myself with the Republican Party to try to help these people understand.”

‘True Detective’ Season 3 Has A Pulse, Might Be In The Works At HBO

Don’t put dirt on the grave of “True Detective” just yet, because the critically acclaimed and deeply inconsistent crime anthology series might have a little life left in it.

According to Entertainment Weekly, “True Detective” Season 3 is currently in development. No official announcement has been made by HBO regarding the series’ revival.

Creator Nic Pizzolatto has reportedly written at least two of the opening episodes, but this time around, he won’t be shouldering the burden of the delicately layered storytelling alone. “Deadwood” mastermind David Milch is also reportedly on board to help steer the ship in a new direction. Details, however, seem scarce at this time, as EW reports that the extent of the collaboration is in its “early days.”

The last we heard, “True Detective” was on an indefinite hiatus, with HBO programming chief Casey Bloys revealing that the series is “not dead but there’s no take on a third season yet.”

After a celebrated Emmy-nominated first season starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, the series slumped harder than most sophomore slumps in recent memory with an underwhelming second season that wasted the talents of Rachel McAdams and Colin Farrell.

However, McConaughey has repeatedly expressed interest in returning to the series, sharing his fondness for his character Russ Rustin “Rust” Cohle in an interview last year.

“I miss Rust Cohle, man … I was a happy man when we made that for six months, because I was on my own island,” he said. “I miss watching him on Sunday nights. I miss watching ‘True Detective’ on Sunday nights.”

On a beach somewhere, McConaughey gently places his bongos down and checks his phone only to find hundreds of missed calls from HBO.

The Huffington Post has reached out to HBO and will update this post accordingly.

‘City of the Sun’ Reveals True Middle East: Juliana Maio Speaks

When thinking of Egypt one normally would not equate the country as being friendly to those of Jewish faith or heritage. Juliana Maio, author, producer and entertainment lawyer, brings to light a past of rich history when Jews were born and lived in Egypt peacefully. Her amazing fictional novel City of the Sun combines espionage, romance and drama with historical facts in telling the story of a 1941 Cairo that led to the Jewish-Arab conflict.

2017-01-05-1483639637-5523252-maio.JPG

A Jewish-Egyptian herself, Maio was the second generation of her family of European Jewish faith to be born in Egypt. At the young age of only three, in 1956, Maio and her family were forced to leave her home-land and flee to France due to the Suez Crisis. After being raised in France, she traveled to the United States to complete her higher education, receiving her B.A. from the University of California, Berkeley, and her Juris Doctor degree from UC Hastings.

Maio, wishing to share her rich heritage, reconnected with her Egyptian roots after the birth of her daughter. Through much research Maio wrote her novel City of the Sun out of love, as if birthing another child.

Egypt’s Role with Nazis Exposed

Maio’s City of the Sun reveals Egypt’s role with the Nazis against the British rule. From the lovely Juliana’s story one learns much of how the past has played on the continued conflict between Jews and Arabs today. Cairo, once known as the “Paris on the Nile,” makes the perfect backdrop for a story filled with espionage and passion. Although most know about the Nazi battles of World War II few realize that Egypt was deeply embroiled in the conflict as well. City of the Sun takes the reader on a ride back to 1941 into a land deeply affected by the state of the world and war.

“Drawing from her Jewish-Egyptian heritage and personal experience as a refugee and immigrant, Maio delivers a powerful story of history, espionage and love with City of the Sun. The novel follows Mickey Connolly, an American journalist who is in Cairo to report on the war in North Africa in 1941. Mixing true historical events with a fictional story of love and espionage, Maio creates a poignant tale, while painting an accurate painting of a pivotal moment in history.”

Amazing Interview with Juliana Maio

The advantaged Europeans and continued British military occupation along with the intensifying Arab-Zionist conflict eventually drove Jews, who were seen as traitors aligned with Western powers, out of Egypt. The Arab-Israeli war of 1948 and the creation of the State of Israel as a homeland for the Jewish people further deteriorated relations. With the Suez Canal Crisis in 1956, involving France, Britain and Israel, followed by wars in 1967 and 1973 between Egypt and Israel, associations between Jews and Muslims in Egypt were completely damaged.

I was fortunate to have a chance to speak with the author about history, her real-life story and views.

2017-01-05-1483639737-3519253-155.jpg

Carol Ruth Weber: The ten years of research it took of learning so you could write your amazing story must have been an emotional roller coaster. What did you learn about yourself and did this journey change your life’s outlook or direction in life in any way?

Juliana Maio: Yes, yes, yes! Refugees tend to distant themselves from where they came from. Leaving my birth place at such an early age I quickly assimilated myself within the French culture. I was sent to boarding school where I immediately became French and learned to reject my Egyptian background.

I was in search of my identity. I never expected to be so fascinated. The journey led to me finally accepting myself as culturally Arabic. So much material from everyone’s point of view propelled the history that I then had to fictionalize into the story, balancing the two together just right. I am proud of my immigrant status and being grounded by my child, job and husband. It took a very long time, needing to understand with so much passion, who I was, who were my parents.

CRW: The story speaks to the crucial historical moment in time when Jews and Arabs lived peacefully together prior to the expulsion of the Jewish people from the Arab land. Do you have any memories of being three years old and leaving your homeland?

JM: Being so young when we were forced to flee, I have no actual remembrance of when I actually lived in Egypt. In my mid-twenties working as a lawyer I went to Egypt for a client. Getting off the plane I breathed in the air and it felt familiar. The food, music and history is in my core DNA. When I am in Egypt I feel immediately accepted, like they can tell I am one of their own.

CRW: In 1941 80,000 Jews lived in Egypt, now you tell me there are only 11. What holds for the future of Jewish-Arab relations?

JM: The country is made up of a very young population. With such a large percentage of people being under 25 years old most there now have no idea that Jews ever lived there, making them the “Forgotten Jews.” The Jews who are still there are made up of one man and some elderly women who had refused to leave. The Jews, who would not leave and stood ground because it was their country, faced hardship and jail. Out of dire circumstances 99-percent of Jews left the country. Putting aside bad times in order to have good memories has helped.

Today I am saddened to see the hatred between Jews and Muslims. Politics have hijacked the hearts and minds. This is a 100 year old conflict. At the end of World War I the French and English mapped out boundaries in the Arab world creating countries that should never have been grouped together and creating dictatorships. The Arabs did not have a chance to form their own countries. Israel was formed out of a need for Jews to have their own country making it an “Island of Democracy in a Sea of Madness.”

CRW: Through research, heritage and writing, you are now viewed as a leading authority on past and current issues surrounding Middle Eastern culture. How has the culture of the past impacted the culture of today for the people living in the Middle East and Middle Easterners living around the world?

JM: The French and English came to the country as if they owned it, especially during war soldiers pouring in imposing their lifestyles of drinking and prostitution onto the Arabs. It was a matter of politics. The English and French divided the Middle East. Britain had Egypt with the main interest being the Suez Canal.

Due to trade in India the English could not afford to lose the Suez. They imposed themselves politically and economically, disregarding Arabs as primitive and barbaric. The Arabs in turn developed an aversion to the British which transferred to the entire West. As a direct result to what the British did back then to the Arabs gave rise to new Islamic Extremists beginning with the Muslim Brotherhood. Egypt, being promised independence from England by Hitler and German propaganda, sided with Germany.

CRW: Jewish people had long been wanderers looking for a homeland before Israel was born, how did they come to live in Egypt in the first place?

JM: Before the wars in Egypt since Biblical times, before the Suez Canal and modernization, people from Middle East, Africa and Italy brought their own religions and languages to live there due to economic reasons. Most lived together speaking French, then the International Language of Diplomacy until the first half of the twentieth century. Cairo was absolutely beautiful back then. The Europeans made it their playground, a magnificent city, a beautiful blend of the East and West. I wanted to capture that moment for City of the Sun so the world would not forget.

CRW:
Not well taught in the United States one learns from your book that the Battle of El Alamein was a pivotal victorious moment for British allies, fighting in North Africa against the German and Italian army. What did you learn about this moment having on the ultimate outcome of the war and what effect did it have on the Jewish people?

JM: If Germany had conquered Egypt it would not of been good news for the Jews. During World War II whoever won control of the Suez Canal would win the war. The British declared Martial Law and took over, taking away the Arabs weapons and control. British and the allied Navy were in Cairo, the entire Mediterranean was important. Without the battle, we could of lost the war.

Bullycide: True Stories Exposing The Influence Bullying has On Youth Suicide Vol. 1

Bullycide: True Stories Exposing The Influence Bullying has On Youth Suicide Vol. 1

Have you or someone you know been a victim of bullying? The Devastating Effects Of BullyingChildhood bullying is on the rise, according to some studies, but can it actually cause death? According to the CDC, suicide accounts for 4,400 deaths per year in young people. This, of course, doesn’t take the number of missed suicide attempts into consideration. A Yale University study found that those who are being bullied are estimated to be between 2-9 times more likely to contemplate suicide than those who aren’t being bullied. ABC News reported that every day 160,000 kids stay home from school due to fear of bullying. Many high-profile bullying cases have garnered attention to the link between bullying and suicide across the globe in recent years. While, in the past, bullying could easily be brushed off as “kids being kids” or just a part of growing up, it can no longer be ignored. From children being bullied for their sexuality to the types of toys they play with, it’s becoming a very real problem that can’t always be brushed off by ignoring the tormentor. The New Age Of BullyingSocial networking sites and texting have been blamed for the recent rise in bullying, especially since these add a level of anonymity not felt or seen in the past. Pictures, messages, and posts can spread like wildfire and what goes on online can infiltrate the classroom and the “real world.”In the following book, we’ll go over some of the most recent child suicide cases instigated by bullying. While most cases are those who were teenagers at the time of their deaths, some have been as young as 11- and 12-years-old. By learning what to look for in a victim and gaining awareness of early warning signs, it might be possible to prevent the tragedy before it happens. And with more awareness and education on the parts of teachers, parents, and other adults involved in the child’s life, bullying could even be curtailed in the future. Time For ChangeAfter reading these stories, hopefully it will shed some

Valentina’s Home-Brewed True Love Perfume Oil 0.33oz

Naturally free from harmful chemicals petroleum-based artificial fragrances and drying alcohol this little perfume roller lets you stay focused on your highest intentions all day long. Whether you are a single person looking to boost your love energy or a couple celebrating an anniversary or patching a rough spot in your relationship this intoxicating natural scent blend can help set the mood. The Story of Valentina When I was a nine-year-old on Cape Cod I found an old book of gypsy spells that my mother had left for me when she died. I quickly set about performing the spells with my fourth grade friends. The nine-year-old gypsy became the tweener stalking the aisles of health food stores always looking for the best ingredients for my little herbal recipes. In high school I put together love spell kits for friends with boyfriend troubles. As a late teen I ran away to Paris where I read tarot cards by the banks of the Seine. Paris led to Hollywood and eventually to Portland. I had always dreamed of offering the natural ingredients in my spell kits to anyone who needed a little magic to focus their lives. We began making our products at home over the same big green kitchen stove we made pancakes for our kids on. Valentina’s Home-Brewed was born. I always try to remember that life is an adventure that starts every day. It’s up to us to make today count. I would be honored if you would include my products when you create your own daily rituals in life.

Wheelchair Wisdom: To Thine Own Self Be True

If I were given the opportunity to present a gift to the next generation,
it would be the ability for each individual to laugh at himself.
— Charles M. Schultz

Socrates said, “Know thyself.” In Shakespeare’s Hamlet, Polonius cautions, “To thine own self be true.” But what self are we getting to know? To what self should we be true? Where is the self located anyway? On second thought, which self is reading these words?

These questions pondered by playwrights, philosophers, and other serious thinkers–if answers could be worked out through mathematical calculations, mathematicians and scientists would be the most enlightened people on planet. But the self continues to elude the greatest thinkers of our age.

What I know is, there seem to be two voices.

The first voice–the false self–judges and criticizes: “I’m not good/rich/thin/smart enough,” or “Now that I’m in a wheelchair, I have to prove myself,” or “I am now unlovable.”

Our humanity comprises only a small part of the rich experience available to us as total beings. As human beings, we all put a great deal of effort into trying to be who we think we are supposed to be; this is the false self.

The false self is also called the personality or ego. Some aspects of it are inherited; others are developed through experimentation with families, friends, and the culture we live in–our education and our religious upbringing. Though aspects of the personality may change over a lifetime, the false self tends to become frozen and rigid, full of regret and resentment over missed opportunities.

The need to control is probably the most prominent characteristic of the false self.

It is from here that many characteristics spring, because the need to control often runs our lives. This is ironic, considering that we have so little control over reality and what happens in the world around us.

The need to control inevitably leads to frustration and disappointment.

The false self’s characteristic need to control sends it on a search for power from external sources. We have to seek outside ourselves for something that makes us feel good.

We are constantly looking for that event, that nod of approval, that recognition that will make us feel more secure. This constant search for approval is evidence of the false self’s insatiable need for recognition by any means, even negative ones.

Even when the false self is able to break out of a rut, it usually jumps into another one. A new marriage may repeat the patterns that doomed the previous ones. Giving up smoking often leads to overeating.

WHAT ARE SOME ASPECTS OF THE FALSE SELF?

  • • Needs to be right, make others wrong
  • • Needs to control and dominate; runs life
  • • Searches for power from external sources
  • • Seeks outside ourselves for something that makes us feel good
  • • Has an insatiable need for approval and constant recognition
  • • Has a tendency to judge self/others, makes irrational comparisons
  • • Is full of regret, disappointment and resentment over missed opportunities
  • • Tends to become frozen and rigid

WHAT ARE SOME NEGATIVE BELIEFS/FEELINGS OF THE FALSE SELF?

  • Being in a wheelchair, I am powerless, helpless and invisible
  • • I can’t do it myself
  • • I’m all alone
  • • I have lost my sensuality
  • • Others do not want the burden of being my friend

As stated earlier, the false self functions in the realm of personality and the ego. In this realm, we identify with what we look like, what we do for a living, how much money we have. The false self is like a spoiled, jealous child–always wanting to be number one.

It wants you to believe that you are your body.

Contrary to what your false self will let you believe, you are perfect the way you are. Rather than feeling inadequate when you see that someone else has more worldly or physical success than you, ask yourself why you can’t accept yourself the way you are.

Ask yourself what would happen if you shifted your perspective? Instead of seeing yourself as a stressed out human being grasping for enlightenment, for some kind of spiritual experience, think of yourself–as Pierre Teilhard de Chardin so eloquently put it–“as a spiritual being having a human experience.”

Is there a way out? Yes, but not through the false self. When we live in the false self, our lives are narrow, confined, and repetitious. Another notable characteristic of the false self is its tendency to judge. Judging others feels good in the short term, at least. It gives us a momentary sense of superiority and strength over those we are judging.

We also use judgment to put ourselves down. We may spend an unnecessary amount of time comparing ourselves to others, and when we find that they have things we don’t have, we beat ourselves up. We may tell ourselves we need to improve, which sounds very well intentioned, but is really a subtle form of self-judgment.

The true self–the second voice–is our true guide, supporting and acknowledging: “I am healthy, resilient, intuitive and courageous.” The true self affirms our true essence, which is love.

PRACTICE:

Things to act upon and questions to ponder:

• How do you hold yourself back?
• Recall a time when you have done this.
• What beliefs and thoughts are you holding that limit you?
• What mistake are you afraid of making?
• What mistake have you made that you have not let go of?
• When you hold yourself back, in which part of your body do you feel tightness or imbalance?
• What needs to be loved right now?
• Place your hand over your heart and feel the loving going in and through your body.
• Forgive yourself for any judgments you are holding against yourself.
• Describe how you’re feeling inside.
• What have you learned?

Celebrate your True Self,

Much Love,
Linda

7 Things I Learned on My Journey to True Love

2015-08-19-1439995202-2034426-IMG_7933.jpegAs you may have heard, I met the love of my life through The Huffington Post. Who knew a mouthy manifesto I wrote after a bad post-divorce date would lead me to my very own Magic Mike, a man who makes me giggle like a school girl on HuffPost Live?

Honestly, being struck by lightening and resuscitated by Channing Tatum himself would have seemed more in the realm of possibility.

You see, I have had a black cloud stalking me for decades. At 42, I have done it all… dating (high school, college, adult… oh my!), flings, short-and long-term relationships, tripping down the aisle. Nursing a shattered heart, I convinced myself that I gave birth to the man who would piece me back together. I flirted. I dated. I dreamed. But I didn’t think my soulmate was in the forecast.

Here’s seven things I learned on my terrifyingly dark, unpaved third world country type of road to happiness (chock full of I-need-a-barf-bag-to-deal-with-twists-and-turns moments).

1. It happens when you least expect it. It’s so annoying but it’s so true. If you told me my dream guy would read my post, which was basically designed to rip men a collective new a$ $ , and relate to my rant enough to craft a thoughtful response, I would have laughed. Hell, I would have scoffed. Cackled, maybe. But that’s exactly what happened.

2. Be fierce. Repeatedly striking out in love is a gift. When you f*ck up, you lose your fear of failure. Empowered by my perfectly imperfect track record, I was unabashedly myself when I met Mike. I didn’t sacrifice one ounce of who I am and he adores me anyway.

3. Be open (just not in a prostitute kind of way). Date against type, my friends. I am infatuated with a man I would have discounted under traditional dating circumstances. I am a serial plant killer and he is a gardner extraordinaire. Come football season, we will be screaming for different teams in our living room. We will definitely vote for sparring politicians. But, wow, the synergy, the sparks, the soulful love we have is undeniable.

4. Kiss frogs. Come on now, don’t be shy. Every single frog — even the wart covered ones who get off hearing themselves ribbit — are a value add. They teach you about yourself if you listen. They bring you closer to your proverbial prince.

5. It’s cosmic. Finding true love is a spiritual awakening. It’s intuitive. You just know. When you cross paths with your soulmate, love blooms faster than a celebrity dons extensions after a bad haircut. It’s involuntary.

A soul connection differs from a honeymoon phase type of giddiness. The person is a natural extension of you, without warning, without effort, without compromise. The attraction is wild. When you hold hands, there’s an electric current, there’s a perfect fit. The amount of time you’ve been together doesn’t matter; the time you spent apart does.

6. Haters exist. Some people despise happy endings. They don’t believe in fairytales. Others are jealous. I have a friend who has been dismissive about my relationship since the beginning. Readers have left dozens of negative comments. I knew the first time I spoke to Mike that he was like no other. He understood me without explanation. Trust your gut, the telltale signs, the palpable energy. Haters be damned.

7. Live in hope. I have paid my misery dues for a lifetime. I buried my beautiful mom and filed for divorce months later. I have been lied to, spit on, let down. I have felt excruciating pain. I have been emotionally abandoned. I have lost. I ended relationships that weren’t right even though I knew I would be criticized for my choices. Despite everything, I always basked in the rays of hope. I believed in brighter tomorrows. And, finally, my day has come.

The Flexible Golf Swing: A Cutting-Edge Guide to Improving Flexibility and Mastering Golf's True Fundamentals

The Flexible Golf Swing: A Cutting-Edge Guide to Improving Flexibility and Mastering Golf's True Fundamentals

For more than 400 years, the secret of the golf swing has been one of the most fascinating and frustrating mysteries known to mankind. Despite remarkable advances in golf club technology, golf instruction, and golf course conditioning, the average golfer''s handicap hasn''t changed in the past 30 years. Not coincidentally, the nation as a whole is becoming less healthy due to the sedentary lifestyle that is harming our bodies at an alarming rate. We are then taking our dysfunctional bodies to the golf course.Roger Fredericks, a leading golf instructor and golf fitness pioneer who has worked with the likes of Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, and Arnold Palmer, takes readers on a step-by-step journey to explain precisely why golfers have a hard time improving and more importantly, what to do about it. In The Flexible Golf Swing, he lays out his commonsense approach and explains in detail the true fundamentals of the golf swing, and precisely how the mechanics are merely symptoms of how a body functions.

Thrive My Way to Finding My True Success

As the 4th of July holiday weekend comes to a close, I reflect on the independence that’s afforded to me as a citizen of this country. This type of independence is not only to exercise my faith freely, but also my freedom to choose my path to a greater emotional, physical, and spiritual health.

For the last six months, I’ve been trying to search for the measure of success. I started my career working for a major media company where leaders modeled working long hours and stress is quite the norm. As a Type A millennial, I ran the race in full force, which resulted in promotions, pay raises, and recognitions from top leaders. Who wouldn’t want these? Those results fueled me to run harder and stay in the course.

In Newton’s Third Law of Motion, he stated, “what goes up must come down.” Well, down went everything that made me human. Work became priority because there was no way that I would show any kind of weakness at work. My usual sleeping pattern of 7-8 hours dwindled down to 5-6 hours. For family and friends who know me well, sleep is very important to me and I have been known to fall asleep anywhere. All through college, I took naps in order to recuperate from my afternoon and evening classes. This habit followed me through my first few years in the workplace, and I would nap on my lunch break in my car. Those sleeping habits quickly were the first ones to suffer as soon as my career took off.

In my effort to lower my stress as the doctor and my mom nurse prescribed, I got hooked on yoga. I immersed myself in everything that yoga can provide. Meditation became a daily ritual that included prayer-based meditation, Deepak Chopra and Oprah’s 21-Day Meditation Challenge, and Sound Baths. These rituals changed the way I dealt with stress and learned how to center myself, especially living in New York City.

Even though I found my rhythm at work even in the lack of sleep I was getting and putting more emphasis in my yoga practice, something was still not adding up for me. The stress level at work compounded in a way I could no longer sustain. My measure of success was no longer adding up to what I thought I was modeling after. My wake up call was a panic attack that occurred shortly after wrapping up a weeklong event. I knew that moment of inability to breathe that I was no longer being true to myself. No amount of money, success, or status was helping me get to my center because of the lack of care for myself.

In this journey of what success means, it’s the courage to make independent choices for what is right in your life. The influence of our culture, media, and even our loved ones can easily dictate what choices look good for our life. Only our individual selves can truly depict what is the true measure of success.

The Future of Fashion: Earth Day, Fash Rev, True Cost

2015-05-26-1432640916-4246228-TheFutureofFashion.jpg

It feels like divine momentum that Earth Day and Fash Rev Day are only 24 hrs apart. A multitude of good can spring from even the most dire circumstances — so how can we best harness the energy of change?

By becoming it, Baby. As individuals, we can consciously decide what we allow into our space; we can vote with our $ , supporting what we value & want to see flourish; we can stand up for the beauty of both our planet & our very own; we can take charge of what is being produced because we demand what we desire. Take today as the bouncing-off place into a brighter present, and ask #WhoMadeMyClothes?

The future of fashion is in our hands (and hearts, hopefully). It’s beautiful to witness the change in culture that’s being created by conscious companies and individuals alike. Looking for organic materials? There’s a filter for that. Want vegan couture? There’s a badge for that. Love made in the USA? It’s right here for you. Fair-trade? Sustainable? Recycled? Artisan-crafted? All at your finger tips thanks to prescient people who know that sustainability in its manifold expressions is the currency of the future.

2015-05-26-1432640959-6586204-TheFutureofFashion_4.jpg

On Earth Day, a panel of fashionable movers & shakers hosted by Amanda Cole discussed the state of the fashion industry. “Only in fashion is the idea that you get rid of it after three uses,” says David Dietz, founder of Modavanti. This wastefulness and disregard for oneself and the planet is at the core of the fashion catastrophe. “There are more slaves today than at any point in history,” states Ben Skinner of Tau Investment. “And guess what, we’re buying what they’re producing.” From the mud, beauty is emerging, though. What I had felt subconsciously for a while rang true when pronounced: New luxury is value-based. “Not everybody wants to be the next Valentino,” Sass Brown of EcoFashion Talk says. “There’s a shift in what people value in their lives.” And make no mistake, doing good and doing well can be a stylish pair.

2015-05-26-1432641004-327176-TheFutureofFashion_5.jpg

Since we get dressed (most) every day, every fresh sunrise presents the opportunity to feel good and make a choice. Personally, I find it funny that while all of my food choices and beauty care are organic, green, and glorious, my wardrobe isn’t. There’s a lag in the fashion industry regarding sustainability, style, and availability. We’re getting there, for sure, but it’ll take more than my desire to see organic cotton tees become part of the permanent collections at global chains. If you demand quality, you’ll create a bigger market for quality products. And wouldn’t you treasure one well-made piece way more than three throw-away things? (Your closet will thank you too).

During the panel on Earth Day I got to meet Andrew Morgan, the immensely kind and smart director of The True Cost. His documentary, which debuts in NYC on 5/28 and will be available globally the next day, highlights the blinding contrast between the tricky triangle of the glamorous fashion set, the reality of the garment workers, and the fashion clients who (for the most part) really are consumers at this point. The movie’s not a downer trying to induce pity and guilt; rather, The True Cost intends to draw attention to the current practices of the fashion industry so that we as creators and clients can bring about positive change. Executive-produced by Livia and Colin Firth and spear-headed by Andrew and his team, this clear-eyed documentary inspires us to take a closer look at what we wear. “Maybe the whole story line of clothing needs to be reinvented,” Morgan shares. “We have to take this story,” he continues, “and have to make it something that overwhelms the old story. A story so much more beautiful that it crushes the old story.” Find the movie trailer at the end of this post.

2015-05-26-1432641048-3963351-TheFutureofFashion_6.jpg

What’s the true cost of the clothes produced thousands of miles away from us? What’s the true cost of skins we didn’t need to take, of crops that didn’t grow naturally, dyed with chemicals that poison our water, touched by hands whose lives are shadows of humanity? What’s the true cost of cheap, mass-market fashion? Also, what’s the true cost of designer fashion? The fact that it’s sold for a lot doesn’t mean it cost a lot to make.

2015-05-26-1432641086-6010042-TheFutureofFashion_3.jpg

The True Cost has the potential to lead us full circle to Earth Day, every day. And the fashion industry could actually become a guardian of the environment, if we as clients vote for change with our dollars. Go watch the movie and let yourself be moved. Sometimes, it’s easier to create change as part of a group than shift patterns in the nitty-gritty of our personal lives. But you know how it goes: once one thing changes, everything changes. From macro to micro; from micro to macro. You have so much more power than you sometimes think. Go change and be part of the change. It’s good for your health, too (and makes you look hot).

Ten years from now, we’ll look back at who we were and what we wore, and we’ll be glad we made the decision to call all of our power back to us. We can take pleasure in fashion and love the earth and all her beings at the same time because true style is priceless.

Shift shopping from medication to mindfulness.
Conscious clients rule.
Shop better. Love more.
New luxury is value-based.
Doing good and doing well can be a stylish pair.

This Owl Ring Bearer Is A ‘Harry Potter’ Fan’s Dream Come True

This dashing ring bearer was a real hoot.

Groom Shaun Palmer surprised his bride Adele and all of their guests by having an owl named Bilbo carry the rings down the aisle at their July 2014 wedding in Roker, Sunderland, United Kingdom. But it wasn’t until the video was posted to YouTube on Friday that it began making the rounds online.

Internet folks have pointed out that this bird bears a striking resemblance to the late Hedwig of Harry Potter fame.

Palmer told The Huffington Post that he first came up with the idea to have an owl ring bearer after seeing it advertised at a wedding show a couple years before their nuptials and thought it would be an awesome way to surprise his bride. He said, though, that his best man Chris — who was tasked with intercepting Bilbo at the altar — wasn’t totally on-board with the plan at first.

“I actually booked the owl before I’d even spoke to Chris, my best man,” he said. “When I did phone him, I said, ‘How do you feel about an owl landing on your arm to bring our wedding rings down the aisle?’ He said something along the lines of ‘no chance’ to which I replied, ‘Well, it’s a bit late now — I’ve booked it!'”

The groom told HuffPost that the owl was both “brilliant” and “so well-behaved.”

After the ceremony, the handler stayed with Bilbo so the guests could meet him and take pictures.

“It gave a great bit of extra theater to the day,” Palmer said.

Watch the video above to see the bride’s sweet reaction.

7 Ways to Live as Your True Self

You feel a disconnect with who you are and with what your life looks like. You show the world one person but know there is a different one within, waiting to come out and be seen. You are ready to become this person, your true self, and are wondering how to do so. Here you will find seven ways to help you identify your true self and help you make the transition to become and live as your true self easier.

Listen To Your Inner Voice

Listening to your inner voice will help you become aware of and identify your true self with honesty. It will help you strengthen your voice and overpower anyone else’s voice you are hearing. Ask yourself questions and become aware of how you respond mentally, physically, emotionally, spiritually and energetically, and to what you have to say. It will help you identify your wants, likes, dislikes, desires, etc., without judgements and restrictions, and as a result help you naturally start living as your true self.

Give Yourself The Freedom To Be You

Giving yourself the freedom to be you by letting go of comparisons, labels, status, criticisms, cynicism, etc., will empower who you are within and give you the courage to actualize. It will also allow you to accept your uniqueness and individuality, regardless of whether or not you have any kind of support when becoming who you know you really are.

Make Changes

Making changes to allow your inner self to show through is a must. Getting yourself and everything around you to reflect what you are feeling within reinforces the freedom to express your true self. Empower yourself to make the necessary changes so your true self can actualize. These changes can range from your physical appearance to your lifestyle, and from your relationships to your place of employment. Be bold, take responsibility and break through any fear of going beyond your comfort zone.

Commit To Your Choices And Decisions

Committing to your choices and decisions reinforces the value and worth behind who you are. It validates the belief and trust you have for yourself, especially once doubt and uncertainty arise. It helps you to trust your initial choice and decision of becoming your true self and living as your true self, making it easier to move forward and adjust to your new normal.

Learn To Trust Yourself

Trusting yourself is a necessity in becoming your true self and living as your true self. There will be moments when you are standing out in a crowd or when you are going against the norm because of who you are or what you want. In those moments, trusting yourself will give you the willpower and the courage, along with anything else you might need, to continue pursuing what is in your heart.

Try New Things

Trying new things will help you be able to know if something works for you or not, instead of just wondering or assuming. There are some things you might be uncertain about. You might even be uncertain about whether or not this will work for you, but if there is any desire or curiosity, encourage yourself to at least give it a try. Sometimes if something is not working for you, trying something new might be what you need to redirect you to your path of happiness.

Set Yourself Up For Success

Setting yourself up for success and approaching this transition, and everything else you might come across in life, with a successful outlook will set you up for exactly that. It will help you adapt an optimistic attitude and help you become a person who always finds a solution instead of a person who makes excuses. Expecting success also allows you to follow your happiness, which is fully aligned with your true self. And when you are aligned with your true self, you naturally do what you need to, to live as your true self.

Here’s Who Ben Mendelsohn Wants To Play In ‘Star Wars’ If Those Rumors Are True

Ben Mendelsohn is having quite the moment, and if those “Star Wars” rumors end up being true, he’s bound to become a household name in Hollywood.

The Australian actor has been well-known back home since he was a teenager, but you’ve likely seen him more and more recently in American films and TV shows. He was killed by Bane in “The Dark Knight Rises,” played Jessa’s father in HBO’s “Girls,” and appeared alongside Brad Pitt in “Killing Them Softly.”

This year alone, Mendelsohn’s credits include Netflix’s “Bloodline,” Ryan Gosling’s directorial debut “Lost River,” gambler film “Mississippi Grind ” and indie Western “Slow West.” Let’s also not forget that he might star alongside Felicity Jones in “Star Wars: Rogue One.”

In John Maclean’s feature film debut, “Slow West,” Michael Fassbender (who previously worked with Maclean on two short films), plays Silas, a mysterious traveler headed west in 16th-century Colorado. Silas helps 16-year-old Scottish boy Jay Cavendish (Kodi Smit-McPhee) on his journey to find the girl he loves until they run into Mendelsohn’s Payne, a villainous leader of a gang of bounty hunters.

The Huffington Post sat down with Mendelsohn at the Tribeca Film Festival last month to discuss the wardrobe he took home from “Slow West,” who he’d like to play in the “Star Wars” universe, and his bizarre dance in “Lost River.”

slow west mendelsohn

I loved “Slow West.” It’s so beautifully made.
Yeah, [Maclean] did really well, didn’t he? It’s beautifully shot. He’s got something, that guy. And Fassbender found him, or they found each other. So I just got asked on board when it was all in its shape and I have a little turn in it.

You don’t show up in too many scenes, but when Payne is on screen he definitely makes an impression.
This, I like this. And that coat [points to the film poster].

Payne’s coat is amazing! Did you get to keep it?
I have that coat. I have it sitting on a mannequin at home. I don’t have memorabilia, but try to take a bit of wardrobe, usually because they dress me better than I dress myself. But that coat, that’s a thing of beauty. I’m very proud of it.

Are you going to wear it around?
Yeah, I suppose I might bust it out in moments of great bravery or just deep cold. I did wear it for the premiere in Sundance.

What was it like working with Fassbender?
Michael had a lot of stuff to do. It was all drunk hoo-ha and boy, he did some incredibly dangerous things around a fire, which aren’t in the [final] cut. There was some falling, some drunken shenanigans near fires and rocks, sh*t that I was going, “Oh, f**k.” But there’s a fearlessness to the way he works that is pretty admirable. And Kodi [Smit-McPhee], there’s such a delicateness to him. When he starts acting, he feels like gossamer. It was a good couple of days.

You’ve been so well-known in Australia, but now you’re finally having a breakthrough in the U.S. What’s that feel like?
It’s cool. It’s been a great several years. I came here for a very, very long time and just couldn’t get any sort of traction going. There were a couple of people who liked me, but it didn’t translate into anything that was employment based. I like to think that what really helped it was the one-two punch of “Animal Kingdom” and either “Place Beyond the Pines” or “Killing Them Softly.” Those combined really seemed to set some wind in the sails. It’s been a dreamy couple of years.

I bet. And now there’s those “Star Wars” rumors …
Yeah, there are those rumors.

So, are they just rumors?
They — I can definitively and honestly say to you that I have no job yet that I know of to go to. That may change. I would be very happy if that came to pass, but at this stage it’s just chatter.

Ideally, if you were in it, what character would you want to play?
It would depend. I think that the Empire has such room. We only know of a few people on the Empire side of the fence. “Star Wars” is populated by so many great types, who wouldn’t want to be a Han Solo kind of dude? And then you’ve got the whole Luke strain. I don’t think that they’re likely to — I’d be thrilled, actually, if they were looking at me for a Skywalkery-type of a number. But yeah, there’s a lot.

You also worked with Gosling again in “Lost River,” where you have singing and dancing scenes. Had you ever done something like that before?
No, I’ve never sung before. That’s me doing my Frankie Laine impersonation. There’s a little film I did where I sing a bit, but nothing like that. And the dance was something we just figured out very last minute just before we were going to shoot the scene. We knew we had it coming up and I went down there and we put on a A$ AP Rocky track and just danced off.

That’s even more bizarre because that’s totally different from the song playing in the scene.
That’s right, it’s not [the same]. But if you ever want to hear what it was that I was dancing to, it is “F**king Problems.”

Did you know the song before that?
Yeah, I was familiar with the opus. I’m a reasonably — I have my phases — but I really like music.

“Slow West” is now playing in select theaters.

17 Things Every Former Tomboy Knows To Be True

Art by Eva Hill

In fourth grade, I wore the same pair of overalls every day for an entire year. In fifth grade, it was a pair of Adidas sneakers, which I insisted on slipping my feet into every day until there were gaping holes in the toes. (The only way my mom got me to stop wearing them was by throwing them in the garbage while I was sleeping one night.) I hated the idea of looking “pretty,” I always wondered why I had to play softball and not baseball with the boys, and I was never ready for school picture day. I was a “tomboy.”

Tomboys are, by definition, young girls who tend to conform to traditionally masculine characteristics and habits when they’re young. As a former tomboy, I’m no stranger to dirt, sweat and an overwhelming obsession with Michael Jordan (he was and still is the King).

Of course, there’s nothing wrong with being a girl who’s more interested in learning to bead or braid than play sports or prefers pink to green. Being “girly” is nothing to be ashamed of — I was just never that.

My childhood was filled with bruised knees, softball tournaments and cleats. And I know there are many women out there who can relate. These experiences shaped who I am today, leaving me with amazing memories, a specific fashion sense and a wicked competitive streak.

This one goes out to every lady who still has trouble putting on her $ 1.99 CVS eyeliner. Here are 17 things every former tomboy knows to be true:

1. Your shoe obsession will always be with sneakers, not heels. Practice makes perfect except when it comes to heels and… walking in them.

2. Your favorite movie as a kid was a straight-up action flick. And people still look at your weirdly when you tell them that. (For me, it was “The Fugitive.”)

3. You appreciate the beautiful simplicity of a ponytail. Everything else takes too much time.

4. You know how to stand up for yourself. After years of proving yourself on the kickball field with the boys you’re not afraid of a conflict or some friendly competition.

5. Putting on makeup is still a big mystery. When you’re forced to get dressed up, half the time you walk out looking like this.

6. Your childhood pictures are more embarrassing than most, because you look like a little boy.

7. Sweatpants not leggings. Always and forever.

8. You pride yourself on being competitive in every single sport. Maybe a little too competitive.

9. The girly clothing store “Limited Too” still makes you cringe a bit. So. Much. Glitter.

10. You were one of the only girls who played the saxophone or trombone in middle school. You wanted to be with boys and the flute just didn’t do it for you.

11. Wall ball was your jam in elementary school. And if anyone ever challenged you today, you could still (gleefully) crush them.

12. You’ve broken a bone — probably more than once. Whether you were playing sports or riding your skateboard, you were always falling and breaking something.

13. Pink will never be your color of choice. In the words of Amy Poehler, “Good for her! Not for me.”

14. You constantly have to remind people that just because you happen to be a woman doesn’t mean you don’t understand sports. So please, stop explaining football to me.

15. You said “dude” a lot, growing up. And you probably still do. .

16. LEGO space ships remind you of your childhood — not Easy Bake ovens.

17. Instead of hopping on the elliptical at the gym, you head straight to the squat rack. So please, dudes in the weight-lifting corner — stop looking surprised when I know what a hang clean is.

7 Steps To Finding Your True Purpose

SPECIAL FROM Grandparents.com

With average life expectancy now approaching 80, Americans can look forward to spending almost two decades enjoying retirement. That free time can seem heavenly at first—until the days stretch on. “[After] the honeymoon stage comes the disenchantment stage,” says Dr. Sara Yogev, psychologist and author of “A Couple’s Guide to Happy Retirement.” “People feel like everything is purposeless. They can get depressed, and we would like to avoid that stage.”

Discovering your purpose—your driving force—is a proven way of escaping that emptiness. “From what we know from research, those that have a sense of purpose are happier,” says Dr. Yogev. “Their adjustment to retirement is better and their marriages are happier.” What’s more, studies show that retirees with a defined, actionable purpose have improved cognitive function and a reduced risk of stroke.

Of course, uncovering your fundamental motivation is no small task. We asked Dr. Yogev for tips on how to get the ball rolling.

1. Write your values and interests down
Nothing helps crystallize your thoughts like seeing them on paper. Take time to contemplate your strongest-held interests and central beliefs. Then, rate them. No, really. “Put them on a scale and rate them 1 to 10,” suggests Dr. Yogev. This exercise will help you prioritize what’s most important to you, which can guide you toward your essential purpose.

#2. Ask yourself how you want to be remembered
Contemplating your legacy—the accomplishments that live on after you pass—is key in resolving your reason for being. “Imagine your grandchild is talking to his own grandchildren about you. What is said? Would he say you were generous and kind? Would he say you were reliable?” asks Dr. Yogev. These questions can help guide you towards finding a purpose for which you will be proud to be remembered, and is compatible with who you are and how you are seen by others.

To help this exercise along, remember your own mentors and idols, and consider modeling your behavior after theirs. “Think about people you admire and respect. Who are they? What is it that they do that might be realistic for you to do, in some way?”

#3. Enter your state of flow.
According to Dr. Yogev, a state of flow is, “when time goes by and it flies, since you’re so immersed what it is you do.” For some people, it’s a social engagement. For others, all it takes is a favorite solo activity, like fishing or reading. Dr. Yogev asks, “Is it a stamp collection? Is it when you write or paint something? Maybe it’s when you’re with friends.” Consider the details, and use them as a guide toward finding your purpose: “What are you doing? Who is with you?”

#4. Don’t confuse purpose with passion
While your purpose and your passion can match up, they might not. “Be careful with the word ‘passion,'” says Dr. Yogev. “Passion is stronger than purpose. Most people have or can find something that gives them purpose, but isn’t necessarily something they feel passionate about. Expect to find a sense of purpose in retirement, where you feel needed, valued and contributing—but not necessary passion. Fewer people find passion most find purpose.”

For example, you may be passionate about rescuing elephants in Africa, but it may not fulfill you as much as volunteering at the senior center. Volunteering may make you feel useful and valued, but you might not consider it a passion. Ultimately, “You want to feel a sense of productivity,” she says. “As long as you feel productive, and it’s something that gives you a sense of appreciation, [you’ll be fine].”

#5. Remember: Your purpose is your own.
If you and your spouse share similar purposes, that’s fine. However, it’s important not to enter retirement believing they must mesh. Dr. Yogev says, “We cannot force or impose our values on a spouse. He/she needs to find one for themselves. Don’t force each other to do what is meaningful to you.”

Not only will this give you the freedom to choose your own path, but it will provide fuel for your marriage. “Give enough space,” she urges. “It can make a couple’s life richer. When you have dinner together, you have something to talk about.”

#6. Devise a plan of attack.
When it comes to purpose, “It’s important to be able to translate something you’re interested in to action mode, to a timeline,” says Dr. Yogev.

In other words, it’s nice to have dreams and goals, but to make them a reality, you must create an actionable strategy, complete with concrete dates to meet objectives. If your purpose is to teach English to immigrants, for example, you might set time aside to research local programs, and then choose an exact day to begin volunteering. “Be specific in your actions,” says Dr. Yogev. “Otherwise, nothing happens.”

#7. Find a compatible organization.
Once you have an idea of your purpose, motivate yourself by seeking out similarly minded people. “I’m a big proponent of volunteering—helping yourself by helping others,” says Dr. Yogev. “Find a cause or activity you care about, and find ways to engage in it.” To get you started, here are a few of our favorite philanthropies, clubs, and groups catering to older adults:

  • Encore.org: As stated in their FAQ, Encore, “advances the idea of leveraging the skills and talents of experienced adults to improve communities and the world.”
  • SCORE: Formerly the Service Corporation of Retired Executives, this non-profit pairs mentors with small businesses, to the benefit of both.
  • Senior Corps: The U.S. government’s main service engine for older adults includes Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP), Foster Grandparents, and Senior Companions, among many other groups.

President Obama Reading Mean Tweets Is Your American Dream Come True

Hail to the tweets.

President Barack Obama kicked off his appearance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” Thursday by reading his very own mean tweets.

Kimmel’s announcement this week that the president would be stopping by the show was obviously huge news for the late night host, but the commander-in-chief’s decision to participate in this popular sketch took things to a whole new level. During the segment, Obama was confronted with all kinds of crazy criticisms, and the stakes seemed even higher than the waistband on his jeans.

It’s fitting that Obama now joins Katy Perry as a “Mean Tweets” alum because this appearance was straight up fireworks.

“Jimmy Kimmel Live” airs weeknights at 11:35 p.m. ET on ABC.

Bill Murray Played The Mayor On ‘Parks & Rec,’ Making Amy Poehler’s Dreams Come True

In the stretch toward its final episode, “Parks and Recreation” is pulling out all the stops. On Tuesday night, that meant a little old guest appearance by Bill Murray. Yes, BILL MURRAY was on “Parks and Recreation.”

The actor appeared as Walter Gunderson, the deceased mayor of Pawnee — a character widely referenced throughout the show’s history but never before depicted. The mayor spoke to his residents from the grave in a little video message, and had an open casket at his funeral.

Getting Murray to play the mayor of Pawnee has been a dream of Amy Poehler and the “Parks and Rec” cast and crew for years. Back in 2011, Poehler mentioned her wish to cast him in an interview at PayleyFest and during an appearance on “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.” She brought it up it again in an interview with Entertainment Weekly at Sundance in 2013.

“I want Bill Murray to play the mayor,” she said “And I just dream about it every night. I whisper it to a bird and then I open the window and the bird flies away.”

Show creator Mike Schur told Entertainment Weekly that when they did finally manage to snag the actor, he was the perfect addition on set.

“He was just the most delightful person,” he said. “Not only was he incredibly complimentary of the show, he went around to every one of the actors and told them how great they were and cited specific episodes and moments. He hung out on the set for three hours, watching us shoot the show.”

The man, the myth, the legend.

10 Reasons Charles Manson Found True Love Before I Did

2015-01-05-MansonMarch2009.jpg

Courtesy of Wikimedia Commons

I was disturbed to find out that Charles Manson is engaged to be married. And I was disturbed not because Manson is still in prison. Or that he’s a convicted serial killer. Or that he has a swastika carved into his forehead. Or that he’s most likely nuts; I’m sorry — mentally challenged. Or that he’s marrying a beautiful, though perhaps deluded, 26-year-old woman. No, all that is beside the point. I was disturbed because Charles Manson found true love before I did. That really hurt.

The thing I keep asking myself is “How?” How could a deranged serial killer find true love before I did? After much soul searching, tears, therapy, and medication, I managed to at least attempt to answer that question with the following ten fairly logical reasons Charles Manson found true love before I did.

  • Location, Location, Location! Where could I be on any given night? Anywhere. With anyone. My romantic partner would just have to trust that I’m remaining true to her and behaving myself. No such trust necessary for the future Mrs. Manson, who goes by the name Star, though her actual name is Afton Burton. She can be confident of her loved one’s location every moment of every day for the rest of his godforsaken life. And that’s security. Heck, that’s maximum security.
  • Name Recognition. There are hundreds of Mark Millers. There’s just one Charles Manson. Granted, what sane person would name their baby after a convicted cult leader/serial killer? So, his new wife will never have to ask for clarification: “Excuse me, which Charles Manson are you referring to?” And when she informed her parents, “Oh, by the way, I’m marrying Charles Manson,” they immediately knew whom she meant, thereby explaining their no doubt placing their heads into the oven soon after.
  • Forehead carvings. I’ll give Charles Manson one thing: the man knows about the power of personal branding. Literally. Of course, most people, including myself, would never carve a swastika onto the middle of their forehead. Or any other body part. I realize that that refusal eliminates a whole population of potential dates. Granted, crazy potential dates, but who among us is perfect? Gotta wonder, though — is Star okay with the nutty swastika carving, or does she rationalize it somehow? “Oh, well, Charlie got that during a very stressful period of his life… You’ve got to take the time to look beyond the swastika carving to the lovely person inside…”
  • Not looking for love. There’s an ancient Zen philosophy that says things we desire come to us best when we are not looking for them. Well, obviously, there’s my trouble right there. I’ve spent so much time, energy and money in search of my soulmate, and she’s just not appearing. In contrast, Charles Manson no doubt just accepted the fact that he wasn’t destined for love, and so wasn’t looking for it at all. Instead, he spent his time dealing with prison, playing guitar, issuing wacky proclamations, and carving offensive symbols into his body. And yet love came to him nonetheless. Lesson learned!
  • Cult leader. Charles Manson was the leader of the Manson Family cult, a group of people who worshipped and adored him and would do his bidding no matter how illegal, immoral, or deranged. That’s a lot of power and personality and one could see how that kind of dynamic image might appeal to a woman young enough that her own personality and image are still being formed. Or perhaps Manson has even hypnotized her into loving him. In any case, I’m giving some serious thought to starting my own cult. Don’t worry, though, I’ll use my power for good, not evil. It’ll be a two-person love cult.
  • “Helter Skelter.” Manson is strongly associated with this famous song by a famous group, the Beatles. Supposedly, he misinterpreted the lyrics as a call to violence. It also became the title of books and movies on Manson. Obviously, I need to a theme song myself; I need to align myself with a well-known tune that will become associated with my image. Perhaps something polite, respectful, with an appeal to one of my soulmate’s parents. Got it! Herman’s Hermits’ “Mrs. Brown You’ve Got a Lovely Daughter.” What do you think? Too old school? Something more recent, perhaps, like Pharell Williams’ “Happy”? I can be flexible.
  • Caring about the planet. Star says she was first attracted to Manson after reading about ATWA, Manson’s environmental philosophy that stands for air, trees, water, animals. Smart. If you’re going to be crazy and imprisoned for your whole life for cult murders, try to balance it out with a caring philosophy about the planet. Just think how many prisoners have to settle for love with their fellow inmates simply because they don’t make public their deep and sincere environmental or humanitarian concerns. Attention, potential soulmates: Did I mention how deeply I feel about ending world hunger? Let’s discuss it over a glass of wine.
  • No sexual pressure or disappointment. Because Manson is serving a life sentence, he and Star will never be allowed any conjugal visits; solely a hug at the beginning and end of each visit. Therefore, any exclamations of “Sorry, I’m not in the mood” are a moot point. As is any sexual dysfunction or the possibility of disease. Granted, that’s not much of a marital sex life, but when you’ve snagged a man like Charles Manson, you get so much more in the bargain, that I suppose you’re okay with that.
  • Ability to reveal his truer self to his woman. You and I obviously have one image of Charles Manson, one formed to a large degree by the media. But the future Mrs. Manson is looking way beyond that. She has stated to CNN, “The man that I know is not what they have in the movies or in documentaries and the books. He’s nothing like that. He doesn’t tell people what to do. He’s not manipulative at all.” Granted, Manson has accumulated 108 serious disciplinary violations in prison since 1971, has shown no indication of remorse for his nine murder convictions, and has been denied parole twelve times. But apparently when he’s with Star, he’s just the sweetest little angel.
  • Women go crazy for musicians. Charles Manson was an aspiring singer-songwriter-guitarist. You can hear him on YouTube. And we all know the allure musicians have for women. That does it. I’m signing up for music lessons today. If things go according to my plan, by this time next year, I’ll be serenading my own “star.” Maybe even auditioning for “The Voice.” Just hopefully not from prison. And if I succeed, I swear I’ll never admit that Charles Manson was my role model.

True Story Of Kill Or Be Killed In The Real Old West

True Story Of Kill Or Be Killed In The Real Old West

Old West Gunfighter’s Forgotten Memoir Found. Reveals True Story of Kill Or Be Killed Shootouts In The Real Wild West. Recently discovered memoir by one of the Old West’s most feared (but virtually unknown today) gunfighter’s and lawmen puts you behind a pair of Colt .45 six-guns and immerses you in the real life man-on-man fast draw shootouts, hell-bent-for-leather outlaw chases and narrow escapes from renegade Indians in the Real Old West. If you’ve ever wondered what it was like to strap on a six-gun and have a face-off-in-the-street gunfight where only the fastest gunslinger walks away then this rare eyewitness account of what it was like to live and die in the Real Old West is a must read that you can instantly download as an eBook. This memoir has been painstakingly preserved just the way it was written almost a century ago on a ribbon typewriter using what would be considered politically-incorrect language today. So don’t expect Zane Gray or Hemingway. But what you can expect is having the same experience if Frank “Pistol Pete” Eaton invited you to: “Hang up yer shootin’ iron, pull up a chair and sit a spell” .with him on the front porch of his Perkins Oklahoma home and listen as he describes in vivid details his colorful life as the Old West’s most UN-famous, famous gunfighter, hired gun regulator and lawman. “The book is great. I have read other so called real west books and a few magazines, but this one tops all the others.”- Franklin Foster, Warwick, R.I.

The True Story Behind ‘Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer’

    2014-12-16-RandyBrooks_HP.jpg

This story was written and performed by Randy Brooks for the live, personal storytelling series Oral Fixation (An Obsession With True Life Tales) on December 13, 2011, at The McKinney Avenue Contemporary in Dallas.

The theme of the show was “Home Is Where the Heart Is.”

“Randy tells a hilarious story about his childhood Christmas spent with his idiosyncratic family and how it led to his writing ‘Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer,'” says Oral Fixation creator and director Nicole Stewart. “Read the story he wrote about those fun days, and be sure to watch the video below to see him sing his famous song! It’s our holiday gift to you.”

I’m tempted to say that when I was growing up in Kentucky in the 1950s, Christmas was a simpler affair. But of course it was simpler — I was a kid! I had no responsibility but to sit and wait for Christmas to happen. And as far as I knew, it was simple for adults, too, since I was under the impression that Santa Claus took care of everything.

But Christmas really was simpler for the male gender back then because some believed that the women would take care of all the cooking and the cleaning. After our holiday meals, the women would clear the table and disappear into the kitchen, while the men set up a card table in the living room in front of the black-and-white television. Beer and cigars appeared, and Granddaddy and his brothers — Uncle Lewis and Uncle Henry — commenced playing cards with one eye and watching football with the other.

Sometimes I’d climb up in Granddaddy’s lap, and he’d let me have a sip of his beer. He always drank either Schlitz or Oertle’s ’92. I never had to acquire a taste. I liked it right away; it tasted like Granddaddy. As he became more involved in the card game, I became more involved in the beer — until I fell asleep in his lap.

All of us grandchildren called my grandmother Dot-Dot. “Dot” was short for Dorothy. As a toddler I added a second Dot, and it stuck. The real mystery is why anyone ever called her Dorothy in the first place since her name was Katherine.

Granddaddy suffered a stroke when I was just seven. Uncle Lewis and Uncle Henry passed away around that same time. But Dot-Dot lived on into my young adulthood.

She was a funny little thing. As time thinned her hair, she took to wearing a luxurious wig of a brunette color not found in nature among women her age. A true Kentuckian, she liked her bourbon. A memory lingers of her leaving our house one night, giggling, with wig askew, and my dad asking if she was sure she was OK to drive.

This was my mom’s side of the family. I never knew my dad’s parents as well. We would pay them an obligatory visit on Christmas afternoon, and I would receive a little dress shirt and bow tie or some gift similarly repugnant to a young boy.

Granddaddy Brooks died of an overabundance of Southern cooking while I was still quite young. His widow, my dad’s mother, was a repository of ailments. My most enduring memory of her is that she would sit at the dinner table going, “Ooh… ooh… ooh. Well, honey, aren’t you going to ask me what’s wrong?”

The other fixtures around my childhood Christmas table were Great-Great-Great Cousin William and his wife, Aunt Edna. They were a colorful duo. Cousin William was vice president of a distillery (and believed in bringing his work home with him). He and Aunt Edna would have a drink or two before leaving their house, another couple at our house before dinner, and by the time we all sat down at the table, they were attacking each other like Republicans and Democrats. Cousin William liked to bait Aunt Edna by speaking ill of Sam, their dachshund. Truth be told, I think he was secretly fond of Sam, but he never failed to get a rise out of Edna by saying that he had a good mind to “slip Sam the needle.” Edna would spit out some venomous response, to which Bill would reply, “I think maybe I ought to slip you the needle, Edna!” The rest of us would laugh heartily, but nervously — never quite certain whether we were witnessing performance art or mayhem in the making.

A recurring story of Aunt Edna’s had to do with their courtship. Coming home from a date on a moonless night, the porch light was burned out, and Cousin William couldn’t locate the keyhole to open the door. Aunt Edna said, “I told him, Bill, if that thing had hair around it I bet you could find it!”

But back to Dot-Dot. If memory serves, she passed away in 1982. My mother tells me that Dot-Dot was a harsh taskmaster, a former school teacher who expected perfection from her children. But as the oldest grandchild, I could do no wrong. Dot-Dot and I had a special relationship.

About five years after her death, I stumbled upon a Merle Haggard song called “Grandma’s Christmas Card.” As I listened, I anticipated that Merle was taking us where so many country songwriters did during that period: singing the praises of some beloved figure for two verses, only to reveal in verse three that the beloved figure had passed away.

I thought, “Merle, if you were half the songwriter you think you are, you wouldn’t manipulate your audience like that. You’d break the news in the first line of the song that Grandma was dead — and then if you could still come up with three verses and a chorus, you’d really have something!”

So I climbed in bed with my guitar and wrote my own Merle Haggard Christmas song. I dredged up those childhood memories of the Christmas poker games with Granddaddy and his brothers, and most of all, Dot-Dot, with her wig and her whiskey. Had she lived just five years longer, I’m sure no one would have gotten a bigger kick out of the song that resulted. And whenever it’s played on the radio, I suppose that, in a way, my relatives and their idiosyncrasies live on in other families’ Christmas celebrations. Merry Christmas, everybody.

Rain on Your Wedding Day: A True Life Story of Having to Execute ‘Plan B’ Twice Last Weekend

Every wedding should have a “Plan B” for inclement weather. Unless your wedding ceremony, cocktails and reception are all planned to be held entirely inside, you just can’t risk not having alternative arrangements in place should Mother Nature decide to play a dirty trick on your wedding day.

Even if you’re all inside, you still need to be prepared with extra umbrellas and a dressing plan if it becomes not feasible to dress at home because the rain is so torrential.

I know, I know… I’m talking about one of those taboo subjects you’re not supposed to talk about – rain on the wedding day. But it happens. Here in the Caribbean, we often have short sprinkle showers throughout the day that don’t affect the evening’s activities at all, but we don’t wait to see what happens. If I plan a wedding that doesn’t have enough interior space to host all of the wedding events, we must have a backup plan and enough tenting to cover everybody if a three-minute torrential downpour happens. Even though it’s short and sweet, soaking wet dinner tables and wedding guests make for a miserable evening.

You wouldn’t believe how many of my brides and grooms actually argue with me about tenting at their venues, even when I made it clear at the time they chose it that it would have be in place to cover the guests and give us something to hang the lighting on for the reception. It’s something I absolutely, positively will not back down about. You hired me to plan your “dream wedding” and I can’t do that if we’re looking for snorkel gear for your guests at 9 pm on a Saturday night.

I wish I didn’t have a recent nightmare story to tell – but I do. Two of them actually. Just this past weekend. But because we had a “Plan B,” everything turned out alright. I hope other brides and grooms reading this will take my words to heart and learn from my experience.

Last weekend, I had two weddings back to back here on Vieques Island. We’ve had beautiful weather for weeks and the sudden tropical wave of rain that ambushed us midweek was incredible. We were socked in for a couple of days, but you never know how fast it will change back to sunshine the same way it can turn into rain in a blink.

The most important thing for a wedding couple to remember during their wedding weekend is that as long as they continue smiling and having a good time, regardless of the weather, their family and friends will keep smiling too. And that’s the moral of the two intermingled stories I’m about to tell you about two amazing couples who never stopped smiling last weekend. Hence, they both had a fabulous wedding weekend despite the weather.

Jacquie and Tim from Philly got married on Friday, following two days of activities that included a beach party pig roast on Thursday. Mother Nature smiled on the bride and groom and gave them amazing weather for their beach party on Thursday – a pretty enough day for everybody to get some tan and quite a few to get pink. But the entire group had a blast and enjoyed the pig on the beach. That night, it started to rain.

I never sleep well the night before a wedding if it’s raining – it’s just automatic for me as a wedding planner. My job is to take on the stress and worry for the bride so she can keep having fun. And to keep reminding her it’s going to be all good because we have a “Plan B” if we need it. And this time we did.

In almost eight years of wedding planning, I don’t think I’ve ever been so wet for such a long period of time. Despite the torrential rain on Friday morning, we set up for the wedding (inside and outside) as though the weather would, in fact, be clear by the time of the beach ceremony planned for 4 pm. Jacquie was pretty insistent that she wanted that beach ceremony unless it was a deluge and I planned to give her that. Mother Nature was not on the same page despite my pleading emails to her.

Stacy and Darwin from the Boston area were getting married on Saturday, so their rehearsal dinner/beach party picnic was on Friday during the monsoon. After setting up at Jacquie’s villa, I hightailed it down to the beach for Stacy’s party and the whole thing just broke my heart. When my staff is freezing and dying before the guests even arrive, it’s not a good beach day.

But the guests arrived and the bride and groom kept smiling and they had fabulous lunch and a LOT of margaritas to keep them warm. The father of the bride sent big compliments to the caterers. Horrible weather but still a great party. Yes, we had a tent set up for them at the beach. Just in case. Thank God.

Meanwhile, I had to make a judgment call on Jacquie and Tim’s wedding and by 1pm it was obvious we were going to have to move things inside their villa. Fortunately, the wedding venue was big enough to hold the entire crew for the reception activities and nobody would be sloshing around outside under a tent. Which was a good thing since it was raining sideways by the time the bride went down the aisle and we were about five miles per hour from having the little tempest declared an official Tropical Storm.

I contacted all the vendors and told them to switch locations. I called in extra staffing and asked everybody to arrive at the villa as fast as they could. We had to remove every piece of furniture from the ginormous great room and hide it all inside a downstairs bedroom. The rugs got rolled up. The tables and sofas were moved. I converted the TV room into the bar and DJ station and the dining room into mission control for our team (which worked great since they were having a cheesecake buffet for wedding cake and that couldn’t be displayed to the guests until after dinner anyway or it would melt).

We set up the ceremony in the great room because the very large covered porch was not immune to the gusting wind and rain. The backdrop for the pictures was a huge glass window facing the water – so you can see they’re in the Caribbean – it just looks like they got married during a hurricane. We nicknamed it “Hurricane Jacquie” because the bride had suffered through horrible weather for all of her pre-wedding events as well. There was a jinx on her I never figured out – she was sweet as can be and maintained a great attitude throughout.

The ceremony was beautiful and everybody was dry (except our staff) and then we quickly converted the great room into the dining room while the guests mingled and enjoyed cocktails and passed appetizers. I love this picture of the bride and groom from their balcony just after the ceremony – I think the umbrellas say it all. 2014-11-10-JaclynandTimwithumbrellasEA.jpg

After dinner, the tables disappeared and the dancing continued for the remainder of the reception. Some of the boys even braved the rain to go out to the bar cabana and enjoy cigars. Nobody – and I mean NOBODY – was letting rain dampen their spirits (pun intended). The bride and groom loved their wedding and thanked us profusely. We thanked them for being good sports and leading such a happy attitude for their entire group. Sure, the bride was disappointed she didn’t get to exchange vows on the beach, but nobody could have seen that from the way she was behaving in front of the guests. I adore her. And the groom was a doll too and so much fun all night!

It rained all night – and again, I didn’t sleep. Mentally, I couldn’t process having two beach weddings move to “Plan B” within 24 hours. I mean, I knew I could do it, but I didn’t want to break another bride’s heart. I also knew my staff was dying. Everything takes longer in the pouring rain. We have to be 100 percent more careful since all the posh multi-million dollar villas have expensively tiled floors that are like ice rinks when wet. I didn’t think we even had time to dry all the towels still soaking wet from the floors the night before.

Dawn brought sunshine and I bounced out of bed with renewed energy. Oh yes, I brought all our rain gear – but that was to scare away the rain. If you’re not prepared, you’re guaranteed to get screwed. And this time it worked. That and listening to Rihanna’s “Umbrella” over and over again to scare away the rain.

The clouds drifted by our island all day making me nervous, but at ceremony time, the weather was lovely and the sky was clear. Their beach ceremony was gorgeous and we only had a little bit of drizzle for a short period when they were sitting down under the covered porch for dinner anyway, so it didn’t hurt the party. I love this amazing picture of bride and groom Stacy and Darwin on the beach after dinner – this sky tells the whole story. It’s hard to believe it wasn’t raining. 2014-11-10-StacyandDarwinonthebeachatnightEA.jpg

Seems Mother Nature finally received my desperate requests. I’m guessing she had a backup of email from other panicked Caribbean wedding planners and just missed my message about Jacquie’s wedding. She got it for Stacy and Darwin’s wedding, thank God!!! They were such a wonderful couple too and they deserved beautiful weather after their soaked beach party.

What’s the moral of the story? Rain doesn’t ruin your wedding day if you have a “Plan B.” No, you might not have the exact wedding that you planned and you may have to be flexible and adjust your expectations, but only you can ruin your wedding day, not the weather.

My brides and grooms (both couples) never let their guests see them sweat. They never whined. They didn’t complain (except gently, in private, to me – and they were entitled!). Because both couples kept smiling, so did their guests. Granted, Stacy and Darwin lucked out with the wedding day after a horrifically wet beach party, but I think that was good karma for their great attitudes the day before at the beach.

Keep smiling and your guests will keep smiling with you. At the end of the day, you’re married and you’ll have a fabulous wedding day as long as you’ve got that “Plan B” ready to roll if you need it.

Until next time, happy wedding planning from Weddings in Vieques and Sandy Malone Weddings & Events!

I Never Met a Story I Didn’t Like: Mostly True Tall Tales

For years, Todd Snider has been one of the most beloved country-folk singers in the United States. He had a Top 40 hit with “Talking Seattle Grunge Rock Blues,” which gave national audiences the first taste of his insightful songwriting, at once satirical and sincere. Hailed by critics as one of the top albums of 2004, “East Nashville Skyline” was followed by “The Devil You Know” and “The Excitement Plan.” Snider’s songs took on George W. Bush and America’s recent involvement in foreign war, along with a host of more intimate topics. As good as Snider’s albums have been, his in-concert monologues are even better. His shows are a loose-limbed, informal experience: it’s often just him and a guitar. He introduces songs with stories that can run as long as twenty minutes, always displaying his charm and wit. As he’s allowed his storytelling to evolve along with his music, Snider has become not only a modern day Bob Dylan but a modern day Will Rogers as well–an everyman whose intelligence, self deprecation, experience, and, above all, humor make him a uniquely American character.

‘True Blood’ Turns Ted Cruz Fundraiser At George W. Bush Library Into A Bloodbath (SPOILER ALERT)

True Blood” fans know to expect plenty of bloodshed, often in unique circumstances. But on Sunday night’s episode, the show stepped it up a notch.

SPOILER ALERT: STOP READING IF YOU HAVE NOT WATCHED THIS EPISODE.

Vampires Eric and his progeny Pam attended a Ted Cruz fundraiser supposedly held at the George W. Bush Presidential Library in Dallas to search for the parents of their enemy, Sarah Newlin.

Trying to blend in, Eric dons a Western-style suit with a bolo instead of a necktie while Pam puts on a purple dress worthy of a gala on either side of the aisle.

But when she catches a glimpse of herself in a mirror, Pam utters a line that would light up Twitter:

Even some on the right admitted they got a kick out of the scene:

When Sarah shows up with the yakuza in hot pursuit, a bloody massacre ensues.

“True Blood” is in its final season so you can expect even more bloodshed before the Aug. 24 series finale.

Sarah had her own set of childhood memories, a boy tied to a chair, a dark leather belt, forgotten birthdays, being hungry, vacant eyes, and lost innocence. These are the memories that put dark clouds on her days, and caused her to cry out in her dreams. These are the memories of a child living a life enveloped within child abuse.”I Love You Baby Girl”, is the true story of the adversity and triumphs one girl faced as she fought against those that threatened her very survival. Cry with Sarah as her pain is described, wonder how she could survive the constant abuse, cheer her on as she fights back, and rejoice with her when she finally breaks through to freedom from a life of heartbreak.Amazon Reviews (4.4 of 5 stars):This is a good book with a horrific story. I applaud the author for sharing her story of triumph and perseverance. It opens the question: Why don’t we protect our children and listen to them. This is the incredible true story of a young girls early life. She was horribly abused, physically and sexually, and yet she found a way to pick herself up from that and become a full person again. If it doesn’t make you feel something then you are dead inside. I think it is an important read. Be aware of the world around you and what might be going on right under your nose.

It is 1931, the genesis of a new and glamorous industry – commercial air travel.  But when a horrific crash of the most popular airliner captures the public’s attention and threatens to ruin the airline industry, business stands to lose millions, and political careers hang in the balance.  When the government blames the accident on bad weather and poor piloting technique, a seasoned aviator has reason to believe otherwise.  World War I ace pilot, Austin Blue races against time to expose the real cause of the airplane crash, as he wrestles with the complications of his failing marriage, and a budding relationship with the beautiful new woman in his life who has some secrets of her own.  Follow the trail of intrigue, and the quest for truth, as the story moves from the corrupt streets of Chicago, to the suspicious wreckage of a doomed airliner in a desolate mid-west farm field, and on to the frozen Canadian town where the answers just might lie beneath the heaviest snows seen in more than a century.

True Linkswear True Jade Womens Golf Shoes – White Grey Kelly

2013 True Linkswear True Jade Womens Golf Shoes Made for Golf, Ready for Anything The TRUE jade is a women’s hybrid golf shoe designed for the course, the road, the trails, the gym, the airport or wherever else life takes you. The jade is similar to the Men’s TRUE sensei, but on a women’s last. The jade is our first women’s model with our new sensei outsole design which provides excellent traction and stability on the course, on the trail, on the road or wherever life takes you. Early feedback on the TRUE jade has been very positive as a golf, walking and workout shoe. The synthetic jade upper is very comfortable and breathable so you can walk the course or around town and never worry about your feet. Like any zero drop minimalist running shoe, the TRUE jade can take some time to adapt to because the muscles in your legs may be used to running in shoes that have a raised heel, a high arch, padding and gel or air bags. In order to transition properly to running in the TRUE jade, we would suggest starting with very short jogs of half a mile to a mile. Your body will awaken to proprioception and your stride will shift from a heel strike to a natural mid-foot strike fairly quickly because it “feels right”. If you build mileage too quickly and your body has not adapted to your new running motion, ?unnecessary injury can occur. So, just start slow, add distance carefully, listen to your body and enjoy the run! Features: True Linkswear True Jade Womens Golf Shoes TRUE barefoot Women’s Platform Mesh Upper Mesh Liner Memory Foam Heel TRUE sensei rubber outsole Golf>Run>Hike>Anything Moisture wicking 3D mesh liner for maximum breathability, durability and comfort TRUE lite synthetic upper keeps the TRUE sensei ultra light and breathable Zero drop heel and TRUE sensei rubber outsole for ultimate flexibility and feel whether on the course or on the road.
