Dress for Success Lines Up Bruno Magli, Altuzarra, Project Gravitas for Giving Tuesday Initiative

GIVING THANKS: For Giving Tuesday, the nonprofit Dress for Success has rounded up some designer and apparel companies like Bruno Magli, Altuzarra and Project Gravitas to promote its worldwide work.
Committed to helping women reach economic independence, the group has created the #DFSPowerPiece social media campaign and microsite to encourage donations. In addition to the aforementioned three brands, Christian Dior Makeup, Peruvian Connection, Rent the Runway, Sorel and Wander Beauty are involved in this year’s effort. Each is selling an item for the initiative where some of the proceeds will benefit Dress For Success. Magli’s selection is the Gala sued pump, Altuzarra’s pick is the Pencil Skirt and Christian Dior Makeup’s choice is the Ultra Rouge 999 Lipstick.
In years past, the group marked the annual post-Thanksgiving event as “Giving Shoesday,” where people were encouraged to donate shoes to the organization. Chied executive officer Joi Gordon said that this is the first time the group is working with multiple brands that will have dedicated items to help ring up sales for Dress For Success. Some of the participating brands are regular donors to DFS.
“This will obviously be driven by not only the brands, but also our database and social media. We’re excited

LeBron James, Lakers, Play Eminem on ‘White Boy’ Wednesdays: ‘It’s Like Taco Tuesday!’

Numerous athletes have turned to rapper Eminem for their pregame routines — like Naomi Osaka, who recently defeated Serena Williams at the U.S. Open Women’s Finals — and the same goes for superfan LeBron James.

James has not hidden his love of Eminem’s new record, Kamikaze, and has routinely shared videos of himself rapping to songs from the album on his Instagram Story. So when the Los Angeles Lakers took to their practice facility in El Segundo on Wednesday, ahead of the start of the NBA’s regular season on October 16, James took over the team’s music playlist to get his fill of the “Killshot” rapper (who is in the midst of a feud with Machine Gun Kelly).

“Today’s white boys Wednesdays,” James told reporters. “Seriously. You’re laughing, but today’s white boys Wednesdays, so only white boy music day, which I enjoy.”

But the music selection wasn’t just limited to Eminem, James said.

“I love Eminem, but it wasn’t just Eminem. We had a lot of good music today,” he said, before mentioning Luke Walton and Mark Madsen, two white members on the team’s staff. “ Luke and Mad Max, all those guys. It was a good day!”

After reporters laughed at the concept of the team dedicating a day to white musicians, James played it down as just another typical day.

“It’s a universal thing, right?” he asked reporters, according to USA Today. “It’s just like taco Tuesdays. It’s a thing. You guys look at me crazy when I said it, like, ‘Oh, , white boys Wednesdays.’ ”

The music-themed practice session seems to be the team’s attempt to create chemistry with each other, just three months after James, a former Cleveland Cavaliers player, joined the team, along with a slew of other new members.

“We had fun yesterday, too,’’ James said. “That’s what work’s all about. If you’re not having fun doing what you do, then you got the wrong profession.’’

James and the new-look Lakers are hoping to put up a fight against the Stephen Curry and the Golden State Warriors, the team that has repeatedly triumphed over the Cavaliers during the four consecutive times that met in the NBA Finals (the Cavs won a single time in 2016).

But James has been working to temper expectations, as many players on the team are young and haven’t even reached the NBA Playoffs, let alone the championship round. This has led 33-year-old James to take on a mentor role with his new Laker teammates.

“I got to bring in the approach I get from home,” James said on Tuesday, according to ESPN.

“When you have three kids, you have to be patient. I’m not calling these guys kids; they’re young men here, and some of these men have families as well. But you learn that you have to be patient and you have to gauge everyone individually very different to get the most out of them.”

James will make his debut with the Lakers against the Portland Trailblazers on October 18.

Live from the Toronto Film Festival: Tuesday, Sept. 9

2014-09-10-nightcrawler.jpg

When I started attending the Toronto International Film Festival in 1984, no one had yet thought to position this festival as an awards-season launchpad. While there were a handful of big studio movies from Hollywood (filling a gala slot each night) in Toronto each year, the majority of what was shown was undiscovered territory.

Which is what I value most about the film festival experience in general: the chance it offers to discover a film, a filmmaker, an actor – the operative word being discover. That’s less and less of a factor at this particular festival these days; instead, it seems stacked with pre-sold titles.

Not pre-sold in the sense that they’re based on familiar work (remakes, comic-book movies, sequels). Rather, because awards pundits are clocking these things all year ’round, there are few surprises in the awards race, come year’s end. Films like The Theory of Everything (about Stephen Hawking) and The Imitation Game (about Alan Turing) arrive at this festival with anticipation racing and awards’ buzz already in high gear.

Still, there remain opportunities to walk into a movie knowing virtually nothing about it. That happened four times to me on Tuesday, although none provided the chance to have the hair-raising sensation of realizing you’re seeing something new and great.

Indeed, two of them failed to pass the 15-minute test. My first film of the day, David Gordon Green’s Manglehorn, starred Al Pacino as a lonely, aging locksmith in a small Texas town. When nothing happened in the first 20 minutes – beyond an extended look at one of Mr. Manglehorn’s typical days – I exercised my option and bolted, to catch an early show of The Theory of Everything.

My fifth film of the day provoked a similar response: Shelter, directed by Paul Bettany, stars Bettany’s wife, Jennifer Connelly, and the reliable Anthony Mackie. It’s a film about a romance among the homeless in New York. Sorry, no sale. And so, on to the bigger titles.

The Theory of Everything is directed by James Marsh and stars Eddie Redmayne as Hawking. The film starts with Hawking as a an able-bodied graduate student at Cambridge, who meets the girl of his dreams (Felicity Jones) and marries her, despite his diagnosis of a neuromuscular disease very near to ALS. He has, he is told, two years to live – which doesn’t give him much time to finish that unified-field theory before he loses the ability to communicate (and then breathe).

This is, of course, the story of the triumph of the will and the intellect over the weakening flesh. It’s also about an actor’s ability to transform himself into a motionless heap of a man in a wheelchair without losing the ability to communicate his feelings. The movie goes nowhere you don’t expect, but Redmayne and Jones give the kind of performances which (rightly or wrongly) serve as award-nomination magnets.

Acting-wise, I was much more impressed with Jake Gyllenhaal in Dan Gilroy’s energetically twisted Nightcrawler. A small-time thief with a gift for insistently ingratiating gab that can be deceptively malign, his character is a sociopath who stumbles on to the perfect career: trolling the police scanner at night to find accidents and crime he can videotape and sell to local TV.

Before long, his relentlessness and complete lack of empathy turn him into a star shooter, who can name his own price at the bargain-basement local-news program he sells to (and can even lure the news director, played by Rene Russo, into a relationship). Gyllenhaal’s cheeks are sunken, his hair lank, his eyes burning with a strange feverishness that always seems just an inch from violence. Gilroy’s script gives him a series of motor-mouthed but highly formal speeches. He spews Gilroy’s dialogue with an urgency – and a cunning – that makes him impossible to take your eyes off in a movie that grabs you and never lets you go.
