Adele Celebrates Turning 29 With Cheeky ‘Makeover’

Now we know what the cover of an Adele album titled “91” might look like.

While celebrating her 29th birthday on Friday, the songstress shared some makeover shots on Twitter. The look she went for wasn’t the “glow up” you might expect from a superstar, however.

In the photos, the singer looked more like a grandmother than the Grammy-winning talent we know and love, wearing a pink cardigan sweater, glasses on a chain, special makeup and a wig.

Clearly, she has a healthy sense of humor about getting older. The Mirror explained that the look is an homage to British comedian Catherine Tate’s sketch show character, Nan.

See the resemblance in a clip from the show:

The star has quite a lot to celebrate, including recently breaking the Billboard record that Carole King set for the longest-charting record by a woman. (Her 2011 album, “21,” has spent roughly six years on the Billboard 200.)

Happy birthday, Adele! We hope you keep us laughing (and crying) for many years to come.

2 Women Are Turning Old Ivanka Trump Clothes Into Something You Can Feel Good About

The Rational Dress Society is an American social experiment/anti-fast fashion brand that makes just one garment ― an “ungendered, multi-use” jumpsuit designed for daily wear. The company’s development a sizing system that accommodates over 248 body types, but at the moment they’ve got their eyes on just one human: White House advisor and clothing purveyor Ivanka Tump.

The Society’s new clothing drive, aptly titled “Make America Rational Again,” calls on consumers to send “gently used and emphatically discarded” Ivanka Trump merchandise that will be rewoven into new, made-in-the-U.S.A. special edition jumpsuits.

Unlike the Society’s typical suits, the Ivanka versions will be “millennial pink” with gold accents, the video above notes.

Citing the hypocrisy of Donald Trump’s “buy American, hire American” rhetoric ― both the president and his daughter source their products largely from China, where Ivanka Trump’s clothing manufacturer uses a factory that violated labor standards ― the Society’s founders Abigail Glaum-Lathbury and Maura Brewer have a clear message they wish to convey to the president’s daughter.

“You offer a path to women’s liberation and empowerment achieved through inspirational hashtags and pink polyester blouses,” they told HuffPost, addressing Ivanka Trump. “But your promises are empty. We reject the siren call of marketplace feminism in which freedom is measured by buying power. This so-called feminism is achieved on the backs of low-paid garment workers and working-class people everywhere.”

Glaum-Lathbury and Brewer also said the demands of the Rational Dress Society for Trump are simple: “Shutter your businesses, renounce your political ambitions and move to a commune in western Montana.” (Ethics experts would certainly be pleased.)

Make America Rational Again, or M.A.R.A., just launched Thursday. But Brewer and Glaum-Lathbury cheekily said the response “has been tremendous! Huge!” They’ve already received four garments to be recycled: “A sweater, a dress, a purse and an ‘awful and ugly Trump tie I got for Christmas many years ago,’ to quote the donor.”

The M.A.R.A. website offers a mailing address for submitting Ivanka Trump clothes, lists locations of drop-off centers in multiple states and provides information on how to otherwise participate in the drive. The clothing will be collected during the months of May, June and July, then sorted and spun into yarn to make the jumpsuits. The recycled Ivanka Trump versions will be auctioned off some time in the fall, with proceeds donated to organizations focused on ensuring fair labor in the United States.

Oh, and no worries if you bought Ivanka Trump products that were mislabeled as another designer. The Rational Dress Society will take those, too.

“Together, we can transform these itchy plastic blouses, dresses, and pencil skirts into the building blocks of a better future,” the project’s video declares

Why You Can’t Help Turning Into Your Teenage Self When You Go Home For The Holidays

There’s a joke that captures the feeling of “regression” that many adults experience when they go home to spend the holidays with their families. It goes like this: For every day you’re home with your family, you lose five years. So you should keep your trip short enough that you’ll be old enough to drive away.

Many adult children know well that returning to the nest can be even more challenging than visiting your parents in another context. You might go home for the holidays and suddenly be surprised to find yourself behaving like a 16-year-old: You fight with your mom over doing chores or going out with your friends instead of participating in family activities. Maybe you’re still criticizing your little brother and his new girlfriend — or you return to that teenage insecurity of feeling like you can never do anything right.

“It’s variable. At different stages of your life you might regress more or less,” Nadine Kaslow, Ph.D., a clinical psychologist at Emory University and editor of the Journal of Family Psychology, told The Huffington Post. “Maybe you go back to your room, which may still be more decorated like a child’s room. You return to the patterns you had when you lived there. It’s challenging, especially early on, to find your way as an adult.”

While regressing doesn’t happen for everyone, it is a fairly common occurrence. And it’s most common among 20-somethings, according to Kaslow. There’s often more flexibility and ease in the relationship once children establish themselves as adults and perhaps start their own families.

But regression can persist until late in life. As psychologist and family counselor Marie Hartwell-Walker, EdD, wrote in a PsychCentral blog, old family roles die hard.

“Never underestimate the seductive draw of what is familiar,” Hartwell-Walker wrote. “It just feels natural to snap back into our well-rehearsed part. The ‘responsible one’ volunteers for more than she really wants to do. The ‘baby’ goes back to playing the cute card in spite of herself. When with her dad, the independent woman can slip once again into the ‘princess’ role she had as a child while her brother starts to swagger a bit like his former teenage jock self.”

Regression is most common when there’s a struggle to transition the parent-child relationship into an adult-adult relationship. Having a successful adult relationship with your parents requires that you feel able to be your own person, and that you’re able to assert yourself without arguments or power struggles, said Kaslow.

For instance, if you bring home a significant other and would like to sleep in the same bed together, but your parents won’t allow that, it’s important to negotiate the situation as adults.

“It might mean you have to get a hotel room … if you want to respect the family values,” said Kaslow. “If you just disrespect what they say, then you’re like a teenager. But if you just do it because they say so and not because it’s right for you, then you’re not really being an adult either.”

Unresolved family conflicts can also make it difficult for family members to break free from old roles and break out of old habits that no longer serve them. “Those families also have a harder time switching to developing those adult relationships,” said Kaslow.

In a healthy adult relationship, information and stories about one’s life are shared equally between parents and children. The parent and adult child can engage in shared activities together, but there is also a level of freedom for alone time.

In an unhealthy relationship, the parents are often critical or unwilling to adjust old traditions to bring in new ideas and traditions. But don’t confuse parental care, affection or doting for an unhealthy inability to change old habits — your parents will always see you as their child, and may enjoy the feeling of taking care of you.

Creating an adult relationship with your parents starts with taking responsibility yourself to make compromises and respect their wishes — even if it means dishing out the cash for that hotel room.

A Play for Our Times: Pia Wilson’s Turning the Glass Around

A remarkable new play, Turning the Glass Around, by Pia Wilson, fearlessly plunges into the ever-morphing conversation about immigration, race and class. Turning the Glass Around evokes images of Death of A Salesman. Wilson creates a nuanced pressure cooker played out when an economic and emotional meltdown befalls a young interracial couple striving towards the American dream. They forge ahead in spite of their difficult financial circumstances and their parents’ cultural expectations of them.

2014-11-02-IMG_20141030_215051_387.jpg

Daina Lee ( Carmen Gill) is an African-American woman who grew up in wealth and privilege. Much to the chagrin of her parents, she married Korean-American, Philip Lee ( Don Castro ) whose mother (Kristen Hung) doesn’t hesitate to express her harsh feelings about Daina, and about his decision not to marry a good Korean girl. Very soon into the play, Philip loses his job in finance during the recession. His job loss occurs just after his father dies. The sting of this loss is coupled with the fact that Philip is convinced it was a racially motivated firing having to do with the discomfort that the traditional Korean mourning ritual caused others in the office.

Riding the subway to and from endless job interviews, he becomes obsessed with the idea that he has discovered his doppelganger in the form of a blonde-haired, blue-eyed man (Topher Mikels). His descent into this delusion only exacerbates the financial struggle that losing his job already caused in their marriage. Daina stays home all day, becoming increasingly concerned about her husband’s mental health, but also tormented because she can’t ask her parents for help. In Philip’s mind, assistance from her parents will prove that he is incapable of living up to the American dream.

Daina went to the best private schools and hails from a prominent family who clearly never approved of their daughter’s marriage to the son of Korean immigrants. While she is able to talk easily about their differences, he harbors a grudge against his public school education — a reminder of the fact that she “married down.” To make matters worse, Philip’s imaginary “doppelganger,” suddenly arrives at their house, angry and threatening to call the police because, as it turns out, Philip has been spending his days not on a job search, but following this white man around and taking pictures of him on his cell phone.

Philip’s white “doppelganger” meanwhile, takes an interest in Daina and his visits become frequent. Daina herself realizes that she has more in common with this well-bred white country club hedge fund manager than her own husband. Their parents, it turns out, even know each other.

Added to the domestic chaos, Philip’s father appears as an apparition to him (Sam Gold) and forces him to confront his deepest fears and failings directly. In these poignant dream sequences, Philip recognizes that he has an obligation to make the ancestral spirits happy even though he has chosen a path that he knows they cannot understand. The ghost is more of a monster, one who is shaken by all that he sees.

2014-11-02-IMG_20141030_215826_144.jpg

The brilliance of incorporating such phenomena as ghosts into the story is that it points to the spiritual dimension of the American nightmare (Philip’s mother’s term for the American dream). Ghosts stand in for all that we don’t see and cannot, as mere humans, simply work out and resolve in our blindness. In our contemporary recession-slapped America, many tensions involving differences of all sorts, not just ethnicity, class and race, but also gender, age, religious and educational differences bubble to the surface. This portrait of one such complicated dynamic gives a glimpse into this unique moment in our history.

And as such, I can only say, this is just great theater. You experience life from another point of view and recognize what is happening right now, in the world in which we live. Wilson’s prose is effortless. She writes with grace, empathy and brilliance about what we think of when we say we are American. Kevin Spacey should be very proud of having helped give this play its debut, as the production was supported by his foundation. Having just completed its run at Teatro Círculo in New York, I look forward to the next production of this play, and of course, seeing whatever Pia Wilson comes up with next.

Turning the Tables

Turning the Tables

In the nineteenth century, restaurants served French food to upper-class Americans with aristocratic pretensions, but by the twentieth century, even the best restaurants dished up ethnic and American foods to middle-class urbanites spending a night on the town. In Turning the Tables, Andrew Haley examines the transformation of American public dining at the start of the twentieth century and argues that the birth of the modern American restaurant helped establish the middle class as the arbiter of American culture. Early twentieth-century battles over French-language menus, scientific eating, ethnic restaurants, unescorted women, tipping, and servantless restaurants pitted the middle class against the elite. United by their shared preferences for simpler meals and English-language menus, middle-class diners defied established conventions and successfully pressured restaurateurs to embrace cosmopolitan ideas of dining that reflected the preferences and desires of middle-class patrons. Drawing on culinary magazines, menus, restaurant journals, and newspaper accounts, including many that have never before been examined by historians, Haley traces material changes to restaurants at the turn of the century that demonstrate that the clash between the upper class and the middle class over American consumer culture shaped the “tang and feel” of life in the twentieth century.

10 Celebrities You Won’t Believe Are Turning 50 in 2014

-Being within Generation X makes getting older some kind of choose your own adventure situation. How will you age? Will you embrace it, conquer it, surrender to it, deny it? The members at the the front of the spectrum of Gen X are crossing a big threshold this year: They are turning fifty. That's right. You heard me. Gen-Xers born in 1964 are turning FIFTY this year. I am absolutely the person who can't keep it to herself when she is shocked over a person's age. Usually this happens when someone I am talking to mentions having a kid in college or a grandchild and I do a double-take. Sometimes I am incredibly rude and blurt out, "Wait, how old are you?" I assume everyone I interact with is my age. And when it comes to "my age" I keep thinking I am 33 despite the fact that I just turned 38 on Christmas Eve. I am always surprised to find out someone is older than I am, but the surprise is entirely awe and reverence. It is the realization that I am an 8th grader on the school bus and a cool high school kid is TALKING TO ME. When it comes to celebrities I follow the same sort of age blindness. Everyone is in their 30s, right? Except last year Coolio turned 50 and that apparently really shocked me. It just seems impossible that so many Gen X icons are turning 50 in 2014.
