Dropel Labs Uses Hydrophobic Tech for Waterproof, Stain-proof Cashmere T-shirts

KLUTZES WELCOME: Dropel Labs, the in-house innovation hub of Dropel Fabrics, is trying to upgrade the basic cashmere T-shirt with a waterproof, stain-proof version.
Using hydrophobic technology and Grade A Mongolian cashmere, the company has created a $ 150 machine-washable version that is being sold directly to consumers online.
Having consulted with Dropel Fabrics’ founder Sim Gulati for the last year, Jordan French recruited Timo Weiland to help out with design and implementation. The men met as undergrads at Vanderbilt University more than 10 years ago. Before starting his own consultancy business Notability Partners, French put his engineering skills to work for a variety of companies and organizations, including NASA.
In a joint interview, French and Weiland mentioned how Miroslava Duma, founder and chief executive officer of the New York Fashion Tech Lab, is an investor in Dropal. And after a meeting in Moscow, Duma suggested to French that the stain-proof garment launch in Russia where consumers appreciate such advanced capabilities. Dropel Labs is selling women’s and men’s cashmere T-shirts in white, black and gray through its e-commerce site.
Finding new solutions in a priority for Weiland, who is part of the CFDA’s new 11-person innovation and technology committee. The group will be meeting quarterly

How The Defenders Uses Color to Define Its Characters

Warning: Contains spoilers for all of Marvel’s The Defenders. Do not read unless you’ve seen it or don’t mind.

Marvel’s The Defenders released this past weekend, and it’s got some problems. I came away from the show with mixed opinions, but one of the things that really impressed me was its use of lighting and color to distinguish each character.

For the first half of the series has nearly all of Daredevil’s scenes tinted red, Jessica Jones in blue, Luke Cage in yellow, Iron Fist in a dark and brooding green, and Sigourney Weaver’s Alexandra with a crisp white.

‘Spider-Man’ Producer Uses Perfect Word To Explain Why The Cast Is So Diverse

With a great “Spider-Man” movie comes a greatly diverse cast.

Marvel and Sony’s new spin on the story, “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” includes actors from all different backgrounds, ethnicities and ages taking on pivotal roles. Zendaya and Jacob Batalon play Spider-Man’s friends, Laura Harrier is his love interest, and Marisa Tomei plays a younger version of Aunt May.

Everyone seems flipped around in one way or another, and the actors are into it.

At the “Spider-Man: Homecoming” press conference in New York on Sunday, Latino actor Tony Revolori thanked producers for giving him the role of Flash Thompson, which is traditionally a white character.

“Thank you to Jon [Watts], Amy [Pascal] and Kevin [Feige] for casting a 5-foot-8 brown guy to play a 6-foot-2 blond, blue-eyed guy,” said the actor.

The actors and producers of “Spider-Man: Homecoming” were asked about the inspiration behind the casting during the press conference, and producer Amy Pascal stepped up and dropped the mic.

“I would say the inspiration for it was reality,” said Pascal.

Yup. Reality.

The response was met with applause and “amens” from the cast and audience.

It appears everyone in production was on the same page from the beginning. Director Jon Watts previously addressed the diversity topic, similarly telling The Daily Beast:

Peter Parker goes to high school in Queens, and Queens is one of ― if not the ― most diverse places in the world. So I just wanted it to reflect what that actually looks like.

By looking at the “Spider-Man: Homecoming” cast, it’s clear this is not the same old “Spider-Man” movie we’ve become accustomed to. This is something better, and it has the positive social media reviews — and will likely get the box-office numbers — to prove it.

“Spider-Man: Homecoming” swings into theaters July 7.

After His Wife’s Death, Man Still Uses The Last Coffee Can She Bought

When his wife of 41 years died of skin cancer in 2012, David Hoskins packed up and moved in with his daughter to nearby Hazard, Kentucky.

Hoskins didn’t take much with him, but he kept two things: the last can of coffee his wife Karen bought before she got sick and the spoon she used to stir her coffee every morning.

Five years later, the 66-year-old widow still uses both every day.

“Looking at that picture of him with his coffee can, you’d never know that that’s all he has left of her,” his daughter Kim Hoskins Fields wrote in a now-viral Facebook post shared on the page Love What Matters on Saturday. “Because that’s how they always started their day was with coffee, and so each day he starts his day with my mama.”

In an interview with The Huffington Post, Hoskins Fields said the spoon and the Maxwell House coffee canister ― which her dad refills when it starts to get low ― are sacred items in her home.

“When he moved in his things, he told me to never throw the can away and to never touch the spoon inside of it,” she said. “He didn’t want it mixed up with my other spoons.”

“I kind of laughed and asked him why,” Hoskins Fields said. “He explained that it was all he kept because it made him feel close to her, like she was still there each morning.”

The couple had six kids during their marriage (two from Hoskin’s previous marriage), so couple-time was often in short supply. Every morning, though, they made time for coffee.

“Even when I was little and she went to work super early he would get up with her and have a cup,” their daughter said.

Karen’s diagnosis of melanoma in October 2012 came out of nowhere and he grappled with the news, according to his daughter. Two months later, Karen died.

“When she was dying, he made himself sick with worry and tried to save her,” Hoskins Fields said. “He begged and pleaded with God. He would have traded anything, gave anything or done anything to save her.”

These days, coffee is all Hoskins needs to remember his late wife.

“He says he has all the pictures and memories he wants in his mind,” she said. “He kept what he knew would make him feel the closest to her.”

Mom Uses Fruits And Veggies To Show How Much Her Baby Grew During Pregnancy

When California designer and home decor shop owner Nicole Mendez was pregnant with her second child, she came up with a great way to document her growing belly.

Inspired by BabyCenter’s “How big is your baby?” list, which uses corresponding fruits and vegetables to track a fetus’ size throughout pregnancy, Mendez purchased the produce and held each one in front of her stomach at various times during her nine months.

“Having something tangible to hold up to your belly really helps you to visualize your baby’s size, and makes you realize how fast they grow!” she told The Huffington Post.

Scroll down to see the mom’s clever photo series and head over to her website for more.

Why ‘Empire’ Uses The F-Word But Not The N-Word

There has been some discussion around the slurs used on “Empire.” At a panel at the ATX Television Festival in Austin, Texas, Saturday, the TV drama’s co-creator Danny Strong talked about forbidden language on network TV, explaining why writers avoided a racial epithet for black people but used one for gay men.

Terrence Howard, the show’s star, had come out saying using the former is needed to make the show more authentic. “I’m mad that we don’t say n– in the show,” he told Entertainment Weekly in February. “Why is TV showing something different from the reality of the world? Why is there a thing called censorship that stop people from hearing everyday talk? We use n– every day. It’s become part of a conversation—why aren’t we using it in the show?”

Strong insisted that was not necessary. “It’s not a documentary about hip-hop,” he said Saturday, addressing Howard’s comments. “It’s a soap opera that takes place in the hip-hop world.”

Toward the end of the panel, an audience member asked Strong why he felt comfortable using a particular gay slur, if the N-word was off-limits in the writer’s room. In the scene in question, Cookie (Taraji P. Henson) shouts at Lucious (Terrence Howard). “I want to show you a f– really can run this company,” she says, referencing their gay son Jamal (Jussie Smollett) taking control of the company.

“That was really important to [co-creator] Lee [Daniels], in particular, who is gay,” Strong said. “The idea is that she is throwing his homophobia back in his face… So to use one of the most offensive slurs is a powerful way to do that.”
