Giovanni Morelli Joins Valentino, Isabelle Harvie-Watt Exits Brand

IN AND OUT: Former Stuart Weitzman creative director Giovanni Morelli has joined Valentino as accessories design director, WWD has learned. He reports to creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli. Morelli, who left the Tapestry Inc.-owned brand in May after one year, is a former leather goods designer for Loewe, Marc Jacobs and Chloé.
Morelli’s exit followed allegations of sexual harassment filed by Stuart Weitzman’s vice president Thomas Gibb, but Tapestry itself has since taken action against Gibb, terminating him and filing its own lawsuit against the executive, alleging breach of contract, duty of loyalty and diversion of corporate opportunities.
At the same time, Valentino’s chief marketing officer Isabelle Harvie-Watt has exited the company after only six months. This was a new role at the company and it is understood it is now vacant.
Born and raised in London, Harvie-Watt has been working in Italy for more than 25 years. Before Valentino, she was a managing partner and ceo of the Spring Group — Spring Studios and Spring Place — in Milan, tasked with expanding and managing the group’s footprint in Italy. Prior to this, Harvie-Watt spent five years as ceo and country manager of Havas Media Group in Italy. While at Havas, she also founded and launched Luxhub, a global strategic consulting division for the

Amber Heard, Lucy Boynton Attend Valentino Show

SECRET GARDEN: The skies stayed clear for a preshow cocktail in the garden of the Hôtel Salomon de Rothschild for guests attending the Valentino couture show on Wednesday, as the final show of the week.
Bathed in a golden light, Christian Louboutin caught up with singer Mika, while Italian director Luca Guadagnino played chaperone to actress Alba Rohrwacher.
Guadagnino said he’s hoping to premiere his remake of Dario Argento’s “Suspiria,” which he has almost completed, at the Venice Film Festival at the end of the summer. “Fingers crossed,” said the director, who is also producing a film called “Born to Be Murdered.” “It’s a manhunt thriller — I’m going through my dark phase,” he quipped.
Amber Heard had brought her mother, Paige Parsons, along for the event. The pair joined Tracee Ellis Ross on the lawn by a statue of a deer for a glass of champagne.
“I love that they chose to have the reception outside so you get to experience the Parisian summer,” said Heard, who has just wrapped filming Alex Ross Perry’s “Her Smell” in New York. She stars opposite Elisabeth Moss “and a bunch of really great girls.”
“The cast is almost entirely female, which I loved,” added Heard, who is

Valentino Fall Couture 2018

Guests arriving at Pierpaolo Piccioli’s Valentino show on Wednesday evening were diverted from the Hôtel Salomon de Rothschild’s main house entrance to a pebbled path to the right of the mansion. It led to a garden that, though open to the public, was a discovery for many regular showgoers, hidden until now behind one of Paris’ mysterious high gray walls. This time, Piccioli invited his quests there for Champagne and a visual treat. With its standing columns, animal statuary and glorious roses — some at their peak, others tinged with the romance of early decay — the garden felt like a secret wonder to which we’d suddenly been allowed entry.
It foreshadowed a wonder of a different sort that would unfold inside, a collection magical beyond words. During a preview, Piccioli showed several looks, each more breathtaking than the last. “A lot of drama,” a guest noted at the appearance of a grand green gown. “A lot of dream,” he corrected gently.
He nailed it. In approaching this collection, Piccioli didn’t want to think about a theme, preferring, he said, “to have a free approach with fabrics, embroideries, colors, etc. I wanted to go very instinctively.” Instinct took him from the 18th century to the

Spirit Animals Converge at Valentino Spring 2019 Men’s Show

ANIMAL MAGNETISM: Valentino’s front row was a veritable jungle, crawling with animals in body — and in spirit. Pierpaolo Piccioli asked four famous friends of the house — A$ AP Ferg, Nas, Keith Ape and Syd tha Kyd — to reveal their spirit animal, and he used the beasts as motifs on clothing and accessories in the patterned, logo-ed and color-packed men’s collection.
“My spirit is the black panther — a strong, fast, powerful animal,” said A$ AP Ferg, who certainly stood out in the crowd on Wednesday afternoon. He was wearing a canary yellow suit and bedecked in diamonds from his front teeth down to his wrists and fingers.
“I change them every time I change my outfits,” said the musician of the sparkling crowns on his teeth. “They’re white gold with diamonds. I was going to go for yellow gold, to match my outfit, but then decided against it.”
He said he’s been working with Tiffany & Co. on jewelry, such as pendants and bracelets, and is also getting to work on a new album with a “huge producer, who the world loves,” although he wouldn’t give up the name.
“I’m a lion, I rule the jungle,” said fellow front-row guest Nas, who has

First Lady Melania Trump Wears Valentino for White House Visit With Spain’s King Felipe and Queen Letizia

MEET THE TRUMPS: Spain’s King Felipe and Queen Letizia capped off their six-day, three-city U.S. tour Tuesday with a White House visit.
The U.S. First Lady welcomed her Spanish counterpart to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue wearing an olive green and light beige Valentino cotton dress embroidered with white leaf motifs. With Tuesday afternoon’s humidity hovering around 90 percent in the Beltway, Queen Letizia also opted for a sleeveless stretch boucle Michael Kors dress, albeit hers was in a flamingo pink with a thin metallic belt and a $ 1,695 price tag.
While both King Felipe and President Trump stuck with dark suits, light-colored button-down shirts and striped blue ties for the Oval Office meet-and-greet, FLOTUS switched up her heels for a change. Still devoted to Manolo Blahnik, Melania Trump paired her frock with olive green pumps with a stacked dark brown heel. She and Queen Letizia were expected to have tea, while their husbands hashed out talks about trade and tariffs. In the past two weeks, the First Lady has taken a noticeably more public role with official duties, following her much-scrutinized 25-day absence that began with a kidney operation.
The White House stop is the grand finale for the royals, who arrived in the

Red Valentino Resort 2019

Inspired by the George Méliès 1902 film “A Trip to the Moon,” Pierpaolo Piccioli worked with a lunar theme for Red Valentino’s resort collection that resulted in a distinctly playful romantic offering with a hint of edge.
Piccioli’s range had phases that included sporty pieces like a white and red parka, varsity jacket with celestial patches, embellished track jackets, knits with cryptographic coded notes with nods to NASA and blue mesh accordion pleat skirting. He leveraged the sporty pieces with a graphic black-and-white moon phase printed sheer dress shown with a simple white tank, mock neck plissé sheer tops, dresses with a single shoulder tied in a short bow and a blush floral macramé jacket. A lightweight technical cargo pant was a standout and came in a variety of fabric iterations, including one in black leather.
For accessories, Piccioli made a case for edgy kitten-heeled booties, some with star details and spiked bows and a clear PVC cross-body bag covered in silver studs. Piccioli also upped his sneaker game and added a ballet twist, introducing a double-soled sneaker with black ribbon lace-up details in blush and in black with rhinestone stud details.

Dakota Fanning and Kristin Scott Thomas Attend Valentino Show

ACTION WOMEN: Valentino impressed guests with its show venue Sunday: a modern structure based on glass and Japanese-style screens, giving onto the golden dome of the Hôtel des Invalides, an army hospital built in the 17th century.
“I love when you get to see a mix of modern architecture with beautiful old French architecture,” said Dakota Fanning, who had flown in just for the show.
“There’s a lot of natural light, and it’s nice to be warm and inside as it’s a rainy day in Paris,” echoed Ava Phillippe, the daughter of Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe. She got ready with Kathryn Newton, who was particularly excited, this being her first Valentino show.
“I wore Valentino to my first premiere, ‘Bad Teacher,’ and they dressed me for the Golden Globes for ‘Big Little Lies,’ so it’s really cool to be here — and I’m in a dress covered in hearts. It’s so me,” enthused the actress, who plays Lucie Stevens in the “Pokemon” movie, due out next year, alongside Ryan Reynolds.
“It’s a live action Pokemon movie and I’m having so much fun,” she said, her jaw dropping as a giraffe-like Karlie Kloss glided by.
Kristin Scott Thomas also had her own action movie to

Red Valentino Pre-Fall 2018

Pierpaolo Piccioli might have started designing pre-fall before the current #MeToo movement gained force, but his starting point couldn’t be more timely. He looked to the suffrage movement and female visionaries for inspiration — namely naturalist Maria Sibylla Merian, botanist Mary Delany and British political activist Emmeline Pankhurst, who once said, “I know that women, once convinced that they are doing what is right, that their rebellion is just, will go on, no matter what the difficulties, no matter what the dangers, so long as there is a woman alive to hold up the flag of rebellion.” The notion of finding one’s voice and speaking up for what is right certainly parallels the present social landscape.
But how do empowerment and fashion coexist? The answer here: with subtlety and softness. References to suffragette dress were light, seen in the high-neck blouses and dresses made modern with point d’esprit. Or checkered outerwear that maintained a sense of authority. When paired together, they opened the age spectrum and appeal to a more mature clientele. Elsewhere, illustrations in Merian and Delany’s work made for feminine folkloric botanic prints with hints of novelty on flirty dresses. That playful thread transitioned into the styling, as well, with

At Valentino, Alber Elbaz Talks Being a Nerd

SAVED BY THE BELL: It was back to school for guests attending the Valentino show Sunday, located in the gymnasium of the Lycée Carnot school, designed by Gustave Eiffel. So what kind of students were the show guests?
Clad in a black biker jacket with studded wave motifs at the back, Carla Bruni, who sat next to Valentino Garavani chattering away in Italian, looked like she’d have been a bit of a rebel. But the rest were remarkably well-behaved, so they all claimed.
“I was a very good student. I was a nerd and I remain one,” said Alber Elbaz. When asked if he had any projects in the pipeline, he teased: “You know, silence is a beautiful thing.”
Justice Smith, who has just wrapped filming “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom,” said he was a straight-A student. “I was so scared of the rules, although I think toward the end, that’s when I started to drop off. But I was a good kid, not to toot my own horn,” he said. Asked about his impressions of the French, this being his first trip to Paris, he replied: “Everyone tries to get you drunk, but I’m cool with that. We’ve been so jet-lagged. We were like,

First Ladies Wear Valentino, Louis Vuitton for Bastille Day Parade

VIVE LA FRANCE: First Lady Melania Trump was immersed in today’s Bastille Day festivities wearing a Valentino jacquard dress with a floral design and full skirt.
Looking celebratory — and patriotic — with her husband, FLOTUS joined French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte to watch the traditional military parade down the Champs-Élysées.
Brigitte Macron chose a different style, marrying a navy silk zipped jacket and short matching dress custom designed by Louis Vuitton with suede pumps from the brand, her label of choice for public appearances.
Just after 10 a.m. local time, the first couples arrived to watch troops march down the famous thoroughfare to the sounds of drums, bugles and trumpets in a display of France’s military power. For the first time, U.S. troops are to be given the honor of leading the military parade to mark the centennial of the U.S.’s entry into World War I in 1917.

Valentino Couture Fall 2017

Years ago, John Fairchild had a name for the type of fashion editor who early on embraced the shroudlike avant-garde side of the Eighties, and who appeared to fall into a state of rapture at shows she loved. That name: fashion nun. It wasn’t a compliment.
Would that Mr. Fairchild were around today, to sit down with Valentino’s Pierpaolo Piccioli over a good bottle of red and engage in some serious guy talk about fashion. Perhaps the younger might convince the older that there’s nothing wrong with a little fashion religion.
He’d at least make an impressive case. Piccioli believes genuinely in the power of fashion, couture in particular, to elevate the spirit. Some may find that thought itself profane. At a preview, he explained his premise. “In this moment, everything is digital and about rationalism,” Piccioli said. “I think all of us are looking for something more spiritual, beyond reality. This is really close to the idea of couture because every aspect of the sacred is expressed by rituals, and couture is made by rituals. Sacred is what is beyond reality, what you don’t see but you just feel, you just perceive. What makes couture special, unique and magical is what you don’t see —

Red Valentino Unveils Web Site

MILAN — The relaunch of Red Valentino is starting with the brand’s new Web site, which has been redesigned to match the new image that creative director Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli are shaping for the label.
“Rethinking a brand is not something easy to do,” Chiuri admitted. “For us, the redesign of the Web site is the first major step in the redefinition of the label, since the site is one of the strongest tools to communicate the brand.”
The new site, available at redvalentino.com, has an editorially oriented structure, which allows users to not only see and shop the brand’s collections and connect to its social networks, but also to navigate a range of content that might appeal to Red Valentino’s target age group.
“Our intention was to create a universe around Red where the brand’s values and images are exalted,” said Piccioli, highlighting that Red Life — one of the Web site’s sections — “is the part that really makes redvalentino.com stand out from the crowd.”
Updated every day with new posts, Red Life is the core of the Web site with eight sub-categories. These include “Pick of the Week,” a focus on a special event taking place in the world; “Next Big Thing,” which highlights a current

Beatrice Borromeo Weds Pierre Casiraghi in Valentino

WEDDING CHOICE: Beatrice Borromeo opted for a pale pink Valentino gown to marry her longtime beau Pierre Casiraghi on Saturday at the Prince’s Palace in Monaco. The long pink-and-gold lace silk chiffon Valentino Haute Couture cape dress, designed by Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli, was an adaptation of a look from the spring 2015 collection and was created specifically for the civil ceremony.
Casiraghi is the son of the late Italian entrepreneur Stefano Casiraghi and Princess Caroline of Hanover, daughter of the late Prince Rainier and Princess Grace of Monaco. Borromeo, a former model and a journalist, is the daughter of Carlo Ferdinando Borromeo and Paola Marzotto.
Fiat chairman John Elkann and his wife Lavinia Borromeo, sister of the bride, were among the guests, as well as the bride’s grandmother Marta Marzotto. Beatrice’s other sisters, Matilde and Isabella, attended with their respective husbands, Antonio von Furstenberg and Ugo Brachetti Peretti. Casiraghi’s siblings, Charlotte and Andrea, were also present, together with their respective partner and spouse, Gad Elmaleh and Tatiana Santo Domingo.
According to reports, a religious ceremony is expected to take place Aug. 1 in Italy, on the Lake Maggiore, on one of the islands owned by the Borromeo family.

Valentino Opens New Rome Flagship

ROME — Valentino is as much part of Rome as the Spanish Steps.
It is not surprising, then, that the Italian brand’s biggest flagship globally should be on Piazza di Spagna here, one of the busiest and most famous locations in the world near those very steps, in a 16th-century palazzo and a few yards away from the company’s headquarters in Piazza Mignanelli.
“The boutique has a symbolic value, it’s in the most central square in Rome near our headquarters, and the city has always been a source of inspiration for us,” said Maria Grazia Chiuri, creative director of the brand with Pierpaolo Piccioli, in a joint interview at their office here. While the store bowed ahead of the Easter weekend, Valentino will mark its official opening with a couture show on July 9, for the occasion to be held in Rome rather than in Paris. Guests are expected to total around 700. “It’s like we are finally inviting everyone to our own home,” Chiuri said.
“This is a very important opening with a strategic relevance after our units in Hong Kong and New York, the two world capitals of consumer spending,” said chief executive officer Stefano Sassi. “Piazza di Spagna has an

The Valentino Couture Show Was Pretty Much A Winter Wonderland

This week marked the first time Valentino debuted a couture collection in the U.S., and as you might expect — the show was an incredible winter wonderland. The 47 looks included gorgeous white capes (which we’ve been coveting all season long), delicate lace pieces and structured blazers.

It goes without saying the elaborate gowns were breathtaking… even when viewing the collection solely via Twitter. Take a look at the beautiful designs in the tweets below. Can we add any of these to our holiday wish list, please?

Valentino

Unlike most boys growing up, Valentino Garavani never wanted to be a fireman, a policeman, a forest ranger, or an airline pilot. Imbued with an aesthetic sense and love of beauty from an early age, the future Italian haute couture dress designer knew where his destiny lay in making women stunningly gorgeous by dressing them in the most refined, elegant, and exclusive garments imaginable. To achieve his dream, Valentino left Italy at the age of 17 for Paris, the capital of post-World War II high fashion. Ten years later, he was in business for himself, and nine years after that, he was designing wedding dresses for such high-profile individuals as Jackie Kennedy Onassis. Valentino was soon creating evening gowns for international socialites and Hollywood movie stars such as Elizabeth Taylor, Julia Roberts, Sophia Loren, Audrey Hepburn, and many more. With lifelong personal and professional partner Giancarlo Giammetti, the House of Valentino went on to achieve stunning artistic and financial success. No one, it has been said, lived like Valentino, whose search for beauty led inexorably to la dolce vita, the “sweet life.” Valentino covers the life of this fashion designer, from his upbringing in Italy to how he managed his successful career.
