Louis Vuitton Launches Kishin Shinoyama Book in Tokyo

TOKYO — Louis Vuitton added five new titles to its “Fashion Eye” series of photo books this fall. On Thursday, the brand held a launch event at its Roppongi Hills store to commemorate the tome “Silk Road” by Kishin Shinoyama. The famed photographer is the first Japanese person to be selected as a part of the series.
The images in the book were originally published between 1981 and 1982 in eight separate volumes that included more than 1,200 photos. For the Vuitton edition, editor Patrick Remy cut this down to nearly 300, which was still far more than the roughly 70 to 80 shots that appear in the other Fashion Eye titles. So in order to keep the thickness of the book equal to that of the others in the series, the decision was made to use an extremely thin paper. Editorial director Julien Guerrier said it was a challenge to find a paper and printing method that would work without transparency issues, but eventually a solution was reached.
“It’s actually very fitting that you have this silk-like paper for a book on the Silk Road,” Guerrier said.
Shinoyama signed copies of the book and gave a short presentation at the event

Louis Vuitton RTW Spring 2019

Should fashion be political?
It’s a question that has consumed editors in a week dominated by the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee’s hearing into sexual assault allegations against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh. For better or for worse, in the era of #MeToo, a hemline is no longer just a hemline.
While some designers have shrugged off feminist readings of their collections, and others appeared to deliberately court controversy, Nicolas Ghesquière embraced the moment with his lineup of retro-futuristic clothes, shown in a maze of neon-lit tunnels set up in the courtyard of the Louvre Museum after dark.
“This is not a narrative collection. This is about my obsession to empower women,” he said after the show. “There were so many discussions the last months about the place of women, and I thought that this is really an intuition to want to give power when you are a designer.”
He did that by tapping into a few of his other obsessions: sci-fi imagery and exaggerated volumes. Dominican model Ambar Cristal Zarzuela, making her Paris debut, opened the show in an oversized blouson with mille feuille sleeves featuring photo prints of candy-colored artificial landscapes.
The sleeves were the connective tissue between his eclectic band of intergalactic explorers.

24 Sèvres Teams with Louis Vuitton on Exclusive Capsule

LONDON — 24 Sèvres is continuing its commitment to offer exclusive product from LVMH-owned labels that don’t have wide e-commerce presence.
After teaming with Céline on an exclusive range, the retailer’s next project includes the release of an exclusive capsule with Louis Vuitton.
Five of the most buzzy products from the label’s fall 2018 collection have been reissued for the capsule, including a black logo dress, the popular “Vanity” structured tote bag in taupe, the “Party” aviator sunglasses in blue-tinged frames and the famous Archlight sneakers recreated in a blue, yellow and white color palette.
“As the exclusive retailer for Louis Vuitton, 24 Sèvres has been a partner of the Maison since day one. This collaboration was a natural next step,” said a company representative, pointing to the retailer’s commitment to offering unique pieces that can’t be found anywhere else.
“This has informed the regular capsules and collaborations released since the launch in June 2017. Exclusive product is at the center of our product strategy.”
The retailer added that more capsules are in the works and it’s looking to engage a mix of luxury and contemporary labels that reflect the “mix and match Parisian lifestyle” and the way its brick-and-mortar counterpart, Le Bon Marché is

Virgil Abloh Taps Stylist Christine Centenera for Louis Vuitton Debut

RECRUITING DOWN UNDER: Virgil Abloh is working with Australian stylist and Vogue Australia fashion director Christine Centenera for his debut Louis Vuitton men’s collection, which will be presented in Paris on June 21, WWD has learned.
According to her sole international agent —Ben Hams at the Sydney-based agency M.A.P. —  Centenera is consulting to Louis Vuitton’s newly appointed men’s wear artistic director on his spring collection, will be styling the show and has been back and forth between her New York base and Paris working on the project since April. On Friday, she was en route to Paris for the final show preparations, Hams said.
Although Centenera has worked with Vogue Australia since 2012 — from 2016, based out of New York — she has also been building a parallel freelance styling career. Other clients have included Kanye West, Kim Kardashian and Estée Lauder, for the latter’s fall 2017 Victoria Beckham collection campaign shot by Lachlan Bailey. Centenera met Abloh while both were working with West.
Centenera has consulted to West on all his runway collections since his debut spring 2012 women’s wear show in 2011. At the time she was the fashion editor of Harper’s Bazaar Australia and Abloh was the creative director of West’s creative agency, Donda.

Fondation Louis Vuitton Reveals Three Exhibitions

REBELS AT ART: Both shattering traditions in their own quest to identity, Egon Schiele and Jean-Michel Basquiat will be the subject of two separate monographic exhibitions at the Fondation Louis Vuitton this fall. This year marks the anniversaries of their deaths — both died at 28, in 1918 and 1988, respectively — and offers an opportunity to confront the old (Europe at the beginning of the 20th century) and the new (the U.S. in the Eighties) with a focus on lines, through mostly drawings for Schiele and paintings for Basquiat. Many works by the latter have never been shown to the public before as they are drawn from Bernard Arnault’s personal collection. The foundation’s president is one of the biggest collectors of the American artist.
As it did with the Shchukin exhibition in 2016, the foundation will highlight again the extraordinary wealth of a man’s taste with the display of the Courtauld collection next February. British industrialist Samuel Courtauld is credited with changing the artistic perception in the U.K. by promoting the French Impressionist artists, as viewers will be able to see with masterpieces ranging from Édouard Manet to Pierre-Auguste Renoir.
On view, “In Tune With the World,” a new selection of the foundation’s

Louis Vuitton Unveils ‘Route 66’ Book With Thomas Ott

ROLLING DOWN ROUTE 66: Louis Vuitton celebrated the launch of “Route 66” in Chicago last Thursday, one of four new titles within its Travel Book series that features the artwork of Thomas Ott.
The 152-page hardcover book traces the graphic artist’s journey along the historic route through a series of black-and-white illustrations, created using a knife and coated scratchboard. Ott is now taking the book on the road again, literally, making a stop in Santa Fe and concluding his book tour at the Louis Vuitton store in Santa Monica on Thursday.
The Zurich-based artist chose Route 66 as the focus for the book. “At first they wanted to send me to Shanghai or Beijing, but I figured out that too much architecture doesn’t inspire me,” Ott said. “I am very happy they agreed about Route 66, even though they said it’s not our main destination.”
In June 2015, Ott and a friend began the journey in a new Dodge Charger. It wasn’t the vintage Ford Mustang convertible he envisioned, but this one proved more comfortable in the end, as it had AC.
“I brought all my stuff for drawing. I was so nervous because the road was so long,” he said. “Finally, I just

Louis Vuitton to Stage Cruise Show at Fondation Maeght

HOME RUN: For Louis Vuitton’s next cruise show, creative director Nicolas Ghesquière has alighted on an architectural wonder in the label’s backyard: the Fondation Maeght in the village of Saint-Paul de Vence in the South of France.
Established by Marguerite and Aimé Maeght in 1964, the private foundation — designed by Catalan architect Josep Lluís Sert — houses works of art by the likes of Georges Braque, Marc Chagall, Wassily Kandinsky, Alberto Giacometti and Joan Miró.
Vuitton’s cruise show is scheduled for May 28, with Gucci set to follow with its cruise display in nearby Arles on May 30. Ghesquière, who revealed the venue on Instagram on Friday, tends to gravitate toward striking modernist buildings.
Last year the fashion pack trekked one hour outside of Kyoto, Japan, to the Miho Museum, a stunning mountaintop venue designed by I.M. Pei. The year before that, it was the Niterói Contemporary Art Museum — a futuristic landmark in Rio de Janeiro by celebrated Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer.
The brand has shown its cruise collection in France before: in 2014, it set up a see-through tent with Pierre Paulin-designed seating on the square in front of the Prince’s Palace of Monaco.

Louis Vuitton RTW Fall 2018

Like many brands, Louis Vuitton has found itself embroiled in the #MeToo conversation in recent months.
Its latest brand ambassador, Emma Stone, is among the backers of the Time’s Up movement against sexual harassment, and drew attention at the Oscars as much for her pointed remarks onstage as for her bold choice of wearing a Vuitton trouser suit instead of the traditional red carpet gown.
Parallel to that, the brand has quietly distanced itself from two of its campaign photographers, Patrick Demarchelier and Bruce Weber, who are among several industry figures accused of sexual misconduct. Both have denied the allegations, and Vuitton has not commented on the issue.
What that has to do with the collection that Nicolas Ghesquière showed at the Louvre — with Stone among the front-row guests — is debatable, though the subject wove itself into a backstage conversation, with the designer saying that discussion about the rights of women is now part of the daily conversation at Vuitton’s design studio.
“It’s a dialogue we have all the time,” Ghesquière said after the show. “Everyone is concerned and wants to make it good.” Ghesquière felt it also transpired in the clothes. He has been thinking of women in general — not

Louis Vuitton Pre-Fall 2018

The rise of ath-leisure has many luxury brands scrambling to produce a version of the ubiquitous sneaker. Fortunately for Louis Vuitton, that wasn’t much of a stretch for its women’s wear designer Nicolas Ghesquière, whose aesthetic has always flirted with sportswear.
His spring collection featured 18th-century-style brocade frock coats paired with chunky trainers, in what many observers saw as the tipping point of the “ugly sneaker” trend. His pre-fall collection cemented the evolution, with not only a new sock sneaker style, but a wardrobe that matched it for ease of wear.
Cinched jackets and neat leather coats provided the working wardrobe options — a kind of loosened-up version of the Sixties-inspired, futuristic tailoring that has French First Lady Brigitte Macron hooked on Vuitton. A gray wool belted jacket, for instance, was paired with black chenille wool track pants and lace-up heels.
By contrast, floor-length skirts were dressed down with casual tops and chunky outerwear. These included a white, side-split skirt that was layered under a gray hoodie embroidered with letters spelling out “Louis Vuitton” — an upscale twist on the logo sweatshirt — and an azure blue fake fur coat.
“We are constantly in movement and on a journey, be it a physical or

Emma Stone Shoots First Vuitton Campaign With Craig McDean

NEW BEGINNINGS: Emma Stone has shot her first campaign for Louis Vuitton.
The “La La Land” actress, who signed on as brand ambassador in October, posed for photographer Craig McDean for the images, part of the French luxury brand’s Spirit of Travel series. Stone has started donning Vuitton on the red carpet, including the one-shouldered black dress she wore to the Golden Globes.
McDean succeeds Patrick Demarchelier, who shot the Spirit of Travel campaigns in recent years.
For the main fashion campaign, artistic director Nicolas Ghesquière has typically tapped three photographers: Bruce Weber, Annie Leibovitz and Juergen Teller. Vuitton is said to have stopped working with Weber, pending a legal probe into allegations of sexual misconduct, which he has denied.

EXCLUSIVE: Kim Jones Is Leaving Louis Vuitton

PARIS — Kim Jones is to exit Louis Vuitton after showing his fall 2018 collection for the brand in Paris on Thursday, WWD has learned.
Jones has been men’s artistic director of LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton’s flagship brand since 2011, parlaying his zest for exotic travel into ultraluxurious collections with understated cool and sly functionality.
“It has been a huge privilege to work with Kim,” said Michael Burke, Vuitton’s chairman and chief executive officer, lauding the designer’s “ability to set trends” along with his talent and determination. “All of us who have been fortunate to work with Kim wish him continued success in his next venture.”
Vuitton has yet to reveal its succession plan for the plum post, which has gained visibility thanks to Vuitton’s mighty show and campaign budgets, Jones’ clutch of celebrity friends and the brand’s high-profile collaborations with the likes of Supreme and British artists Jake and Dinos Chapman. Vuitton described Jones as “the driving force behind some of the Maison’s most successful projects and collaborations.”
In an Instagram post, Jones thanked his team and collaborators. “Thank you @louisvuitton for 7 wonderful years ! You really have been the best and I am grateful to @themarcjacobs for giving me the opportunity

UNITED FRONT: Showing their support, guests including Gwendoline Christie, Xavier Dolan and Brazilian soccer champion Neymar Jr. turned out to take in the final show of Louis Vuitton men’s designer Kim Jones on Thursday.
Joining them were designers Maria Grazia Chiuri, Stefano Pilati, Victoria Beckham, Olivier Rousteing and Virgil Abloh, who delivered “a personal message for Kim.”
“What an amazing tenure, he has always been one of my favorite designers and his gift to the world of men’s fashion will be forever remembered. Super excited to see what he goes on to do,” he said.
“Excited to see what he’ll be doing next,” echoed Beckham, who took in the show with her husband and son, David and Brooklyn Beckham, eyeing up one of the leather jackets with cherry blossom embroidery.
“It’s been an amazing journey for him and, of course, it’s not over yet. He’s just at the beginning of his career,” said Stephen Jones.

Louis Vuitton RTW Spring 2018

A deep strain of history ran through Nicolas Ghesquière’s spring collection for Louis Vuitton, and not just because of the show’s location: the bowels of the Louvre Museum, in the medieval moat around which the royal palace was built.
At one end of the runway sat the Great Sphinx of Tanis, a reminder of an even more ancient civilization. The creature, which has the body of a lion and the head of a king, was found in 1825 among the ruins of the Temple of Amun in Egypt.
Vuitton has been highlighting its connections with French history, and royalty, as it celebrates the opening this week of its flagship on Place Vendôme, which sprawls across two majestic 18th-century townhouses.
Ghesquière tapped into that spirit with a powerful lineup that blended his signature sportswear with costume references, in a return to the high-concept approach that defined his collections at Balenciaga, and which he had traded for a more pragmatic vision since joining Vuitton.
Frock coats — in rich metallic brocades, embroidered silk or sculptural leather — were paired with silky boxer shorts or tapered pants in glossy vinyl textures. Almost every look was finished off with clunky sneakers — down to a silver-embroidered Botticelli dress

First Ladies Wear Valentino, Louis Vuitton for Bastille Day Parade

VIVE LA FRANCE: First Lady Melania Trump was immersed in today’s Bastille Day festivities wearing a Valentino jacquard dress with a floral design and full skirt.
Looking celebratory — and patriotic — with her husband, FLOTUS joined French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte to watch the traditional military parade down the Champs-Élysées.
Brigitte Macron chose a different style, marrying a navy silk zipped jacket and short matching dress custom designed by Louis Vuitton with suede pumps from the brand, her label of choice for public appearances.
Just after 10 a.m. local time, the first couples arrived to watch troops march down the famous thoroughfare to the sounds of drums, bugles and trumpets in a display of France’s military power. For the first time, U.S. troops are to be given the honor of leading the military parade to mark the centennial of the U.S.’s entry into World War I in 1917.

Street Signs: Louis Vuitton x Supreme Stirs Global Frenzy, but a Well-Managed One

Megacrowds — many destined to be disappointed — greeted the long-awaited arrival of the Louis Vuitton x Supreme collaboration in pop-up shops around the world on Friday.
Just as Michael Burke, chairman and chief executive officer of Louis Vuitton, previously told WWD, the brand revealed the location of the pop-ups on Instagram only one day, or sometimes hours, before the release.
“There will be no marketing and no press release. We won’t be pandering to the customer. It’s all about peer-to-peer communication. We provide a very minimum amount of information and let the people judge us from there,” Burke said.
As reported, the collection, unveiled at Paris Men’s Fashion Week in January, is being sold exclusively through eight pop-ups in Paris, London, Miami, Los Angeles, Tokyo, Beijing, Seoul and Sydney. With the exception of the Miami pop-up, located in an exhibition space on the third floor of Vuitton’s Design District store, the stores have no prior connection with either brand. The Sydney pop-up is located at 95 Roscoe Street in Bondi Beach, while the Tokyo space opened in the Minami-Aoyama district, where more than 7,000 people lined up outside starting from the late hours of Thursday night.

Louis Vuitton Opens First Men’s Pop-up Store in Milan

MILAN — Louis Vuitton’s first men’s pop-up store in Italy, which was inaugurated here on Friday and will officially open Saturday, coincides with the city’s men’s fashion week and will close on Jan. 29. Located in the arty Brera district, the store carries the men’s spring collection exclusively in Italy, including shoes, bags, travel cases, accessories, small leather goods and watches.
The store has a distinctive artistic feel. The decor pays homage to Africa and the art of the Chapman brothers, who inspired Kim Jones, the brand’s men’s artistic director, on the spring collection. The renderings of the Big Five animals by brothers Dinos and Jake Chapman stand out on the walls, contrasting with the storied feel of the venue, with its antique fireplace and coffered ceilings.
“Brera is an interesting area and full of life, in which history, art and fashion blend and become protagonists,” said Jones, pointing to the relevance of the project in Milan as “the capital of men’s wear.”
Jones worked with the Chapmans to create four animal prints on the Louis Vuitton Monogram pattern, seen on ready-to-wear, accessories and leather goods, including two rigid beauty cases, available upon request.

Louis Vuitton, UNICEF Launch #Makeapromise Day

GOOD CAUSE: Louis Vuitton is to launch its first #makeapromise day on Jan. 12 in partnership with the United Nation’s Children’s Fund, or UNICEF, to raise funds for children in urgent need.
The initiative comes a year after the luxury brand embarked on the charitable project with an initial three-year global partnership with the UNICEF fund.
During this day, some 12,000 Louis Vuitton sales associates in 460 Louis Vuitton stores worldwide will pitch the partnership and promote the sales of the Silver Lockit jewelry items, with $ 200 from each sale of the $ 600 pendant and $ 500 bracelet donated to UNICEF. An offer will be made that day for those who purchase two Silver Lockits items in all Louis Vuitton stores and on louisvuitton.com.
The event will be held in tandem with a campaign where clients will be encouraged to come accompanied with someone close to make a “pinky promise” and to share their promise online with a hashtag #makeapromise. Vuitton staff is also inviting clients to make direct donations online throughout the year and especially during emergencies.
Since January 2016, the partnership has helped raise $ 2.5 million to help bring children life-saving humanitarian support in Syria and Nigeria.

Louis Vuitton Christens ‘Series 3’ Expo in London

LONDON — The modern fashion show is entertaining and glamorous, but over in roughly 12 minutes flat.
Louis Vuitton’s “Series 3” exhibition that opens to the public at 180 Strand here on Monday is designed to decrypt the spectacle, and exalt all the craft and creativity that goes into it.
“Fashion is a circus. There’s very little discussion about the content. But you have to go into the before, the during and the after. And if you do it in an appropriate way, it’s unforgettable,” Michael Burke, chairman and chief executive officer of Louis Vuitton, said during a walkthrough of the sprawling, high-tech showcase. “We’re experimenting with how to make you feel the show more intensely than being at the show.”
The show in question is Nicolas Ghesquière’s fall collection, paraded in a series of geodesic domes erected at the foot of the Frank Gehry-designed Louis Vuitton Foundation in Paris in March. A skeletal example of one dome lords over the ceiling of the darkened room that opens the exhibition, cuing the midcentury period that the French designer frequently mines. Visitors then traverse a futuristic tunnel that plunges them into the exhibition.

Louis Vuitton Designs Case for Rugby World Cup 2015 Webb Ellis Prize

CASE WORK: Louis Vuitton is making its debut on the rugby pitch with the creation of a bespoke case to hold the Webb Ellis Cup, rugby’s greatest prize. Vuitton’s latest trunk will make its debut at the Rugby World Cup final on Oct. 31 in Twickenham, England.
Handmade at the brand’s Asnières workshop near Paris, the travel case has been designed to contain the sterling silver and gold-plate trophy. It is covered in Louis Vuitton’s monogram canvas and has been fitted with the company’s signature brass lock and corners. It opens from the front and at the top to allow the trophy to be easily removed.
The same Vuitton workshop also made the trunk that holds the world’s oldest sporting trophy, the silver ewer of the America’s Cup, which dates to 1851. More recently, Louis Vuitton designed the trophy case for the 2014 FIFA World Cup Trophy.
World Rugby chairman Bernard Lapasset called the Webb Ellis Cup “the most coveted prize in rugby,” and “a symbol of unity, enjoyment, participation and excellence. We are excited about our collaboration with a fashion house as renowned as Louis Vuitton and delighted with the stunning, modern-classic case.”

Louis Vuitton

Louis Vuitton

The first in depth portrait of one of the world’s best known luxury brands, this elegant volume traces the remarkable history of the House of Vuitton, which has been making practical but stylish luggage, handbags and accessories for more than 150 years. Written with full access to the company’s archives, the book itself demonstrates Louis Vuitton’s passion for fine design with a stunning array of archival art, historical images, product designs and sketches, and cutting edge advertising. The book explores the company’s tradition of quality and innovation in the context of sweeping changes in society, art, culture, fashion and, above all, travel. Examining the life and times of the company’s first three leaders; founder Louis (who invented the modern trunk), his son Georges and his grandson Gaston, the text focuses on the firm’s development under their guidance. It also discusses Vuitton’s explosive growth toward the end of the 20th century, including the 1987 merger with Moet Hennessy that made it part of LVMH, the world’s largest luxury goods company and spurred the expansion of its boutiques to more than 300 locations in 50 countries around the globe. When this book was published in 2004, it was the first to describe and explain, with numerous previously unseen documents and accounts, the fascinating and irrepressible rise of the world’s finest luxury company, which was celebrating its 150th anniversary in 2004. This new edition will include a complete update of the final section of the book, which discusses the company’s recent history, with new texts, photos, and interviews.
