Prosecutors Want to Keep to Keep Autopsies Secret in Murders of Shan’ann Watts and Her Daughters

Citing the “critical” nature of the the information contained within them, Colorado prosecutors moved this week to withhold the autopsies conducted in the triple homicide of Shan’ann Watts and her two young daughters, PEOPLE confirms.

The slayings, allegedly at the hands of Chris Watts, Shan’ann’s husband of nearly six years, attracted almost instant national attention — but the precise nature of the killings has remain unconfirmed.

In a motion filed Monday, prosecutors noted much the same in asking the judge to keep the autopsies from public view until Chris’ trial.

“The observations and findings contained in the coroner’s autopsy report will be critical evidence at trial,” prosecutors argued. “The disclosure of this information to the public prior to trial could result in tainting witnesses that have not yet been interviewed and impacting future jurors.”

In a brief response on Friday, Chris’ defense said that it has yet to receive copies of the autopsies and so was unable to take a position on whether they should be made secret.

“Failure to turn over this evidence violates due process of law, undermines the fundamental fairness of the proceedings, makes counsel’s effective assistance impossible, and continues to put Mr. Watts on unequal footing with the government,” his attorney contended.

RELATED: How the Watts Family Murder Case Unfolded

Previous defense filings in the case have suggested the Watts children, 3-year-old Celeste and 4-year-old Bella, may have been strangled.

According to Chris’ arrest affidavit, he allegedly confessed to police that he had strangled Shan’ann, then 15 weeks pregnant with their son, but only after witnessing her strangle Celeste, with Bella lying lifeless nearby.

RELATED: What Police Found Inside the Watts Home After Mom and Girls Vanished

Chris was arrested late on Aug. 15 and subsequently charged with first-degree murder in all three deaths, among other crimes. His wife and daughters were reported missing on Aug. 13, not long after Shan’ann returned from a work trip in Arizona.

A day after Chris was taken into custody, authorities announced they had discovered the bodies of Shan’ann, Bella and Celeste at an oil site owned by Chris’ former employer. (He was fired on Aug. 15.)

The autopsies are not the only disputed issue in the case as it winds its way toward a trial.

Prosecutors have recently moved the judge to compel Chris to give up copies of his fingerprints, impressions of his feet and a DNA swab in order to assist in their testing of collected evidence.

His defense has objected, describing the request as overly vague and lacking established probable cause.

The judge has yet to rule on either issue.

Chris remains behind bars and has not entered a plea. His public defender is barred from discussing the case.

Kaley Cuoco and Fiancé Karl Cook Are Eager to Tie the Knot: ‘We Don’t Want to Wait Much Longer’

It’s not just puppy love for Kaley Cuoco.

The Big Bang Theory star, 32, gushed about fiancé Karl Cook at Saturday’s Paw Works’ James Paw 007 Ties & Tails Gala, where she shared hosting duties with Brad Goreski.

“He is my perfect match,” she told PEOPLE. “He lets me wake up in the morning and say, ‘I want to go and rescue rabbits.’ And he’s like, ‘Alright, let’s get a coffee and let’s go.’ And that is him. We are the same, our views are the same, our morals are the same, he is my perfect match.”

Cuoco added that while it was practically love at first sight, those feelings only grew as the couple got to know each other more.

“We connected very quickly, but I only found out over time how similar we both were, how similar that we are,” she said. “I thought, ‘Oh, my God, this guy…’ I think that I used to think that opposites attract, but in my situation, us being so similar and liking the same things, it really works for us.”

Since getting engaged in November, just over two years after Cuoco went through a very divorce from Ryan Sweeting, she said the couple is more and more eager to tie the knot.

“It’s going great! We can’t wait!” the actress said of getting ready. “We are really, honestly excited, we don’t want to wait much longer. We both really want to do this, we are so happy, and we want to move forward in our life.”

She also revealed, “I can honestly say that all of the animals will be part of our wedding, for sure.”

The longtime animal lover — her Instagram is full of adorable animal snaps, including her three rescue dogs, two rabbits and horses — joined the board of the Paw Works.

“This amazing non-profit, they save thousands of dogs and cats, get them amazing homes, take them off of death row, and create a new life for them. And they do it in a beautiful way! They make them look beautiful, they help them get healthy give them all of their shots, and all of this great stuff,” she said. “It’s really amazing, time-consuming, heartfelt work that I can try and be the voice for, but when you actually see what the people are doing behind the scenes, it’s pretty magical.”

Golfer and SI Swim Model Paige Spiranac ‘Didn’t Want to Live Anymore’ After Cyberbullying

On the eve of one of the biggest tournaments in golfer Paige Spiranac’s career, she was sobbing on the floor of a hotel room after dealing with cyberbullying.

Spiranac, then 22, had been called the “hottest golfer on the planet,” and because she got an invite to the tournament to bring recognition to the event, not based on her skill, people said she wasn’t good enough to play, and that she was only sexualizing the game.

“It really affected me,” Spiranac told Sports Illustrated. “I was sitting in the bathroom just balling and was like ‘I don’t want to go through this pain, this feel of helplessness. Being alone. Scared.’ And I said I never wanted anyone to feel the way I felt in that moment. How scared I was. How helpless I felt in that I was bullied so bad to the point that I didn’t want to live anymore.”

And this wasn’t the first time she experienced bullying. As a child, Spiranac had a condition that made her hair fall out, and classmates said she looked like a boy.

“I had a lot of health issues growing up,” she said. “On top of the hair condition, I had asthma and bad social anxiety. I was one weird little kid. So I know how it feels to be an outsider, how it feels to be bullied, to have no friends, to be that person no one wanted around.”

Now 24 and in the 2018 SI Swim issue, Spiranac hopes to use this stage to spread awareness about cyberbullying, and her work with the non-profit Cybersmile.

“People of all walks of life are cyberbullied every single day and that’s not okay,” she said. “It’s time we start supporting the victims instead of telling them to delete social media or ignore the hate. It’s time we made a difference, so I’ve dedicated a significant portion of my time to helping others.”

Spiranac knows, though, that posing in just a Wonder Woman-inspired chest plate could open her up to more criticism. But she’s ready for it.

“Even though being in the SI Swimsuit Issue has always been a dream of mine it would be a lie to say that I didn’t think about what the response might be,” she said. “I mean I wear leggings and people say that the way I’m dressed is inappropriate! But in the end, it’s not the opinions of other people that matter — it’s if you’re doing things that make you feel happy, fulfilled, and empowered. You can’t let negativity hold you back from living your life!”

5 Latina Beauty Brands You’ll Want in Your Stocking

Latina entrepreneurs have undoubtedly been on the rise. Time reported in 2016 there’s been a 137 percent increase in Latina-owned businesses, a larger rise than in any other demographic in the U.S. Chicas also seem to be cornering the market on creating quality beauty brands, having founded cosmetic lines that have received recognition and made a lasting impression on the beauty world with their inclusive shades and innovative products.

So what makes these brands stand out in a highly active and oversaturated market? See below for what’s hot on our holiday radar:

Co-founder of Melt Cosmetics and Mexican-American makeup artist Lora Arellano is the brains behind many of Rihanna’s most iconic looks. Alongside business partner Dana Bomar, Arellano’s brand is curated with originality and artistry in mind.  These fierce chica bosses could even be credited with the rising trend of blue, purple and even green lipstick.

The Mexican-born Argentinian tattoo artist, model, beauty entrepreneur and television personality known as Kat Von D has been a leading pioneer in the beauty industry since Sephora tapped her to create a collection in 2008. She told PopSugar her Latin background plays a huge role in everything she does, including the Spanish shade names and themes for her makeup collection.

Portuguese and Mexican beauty innovator Rea Ann Silva has forever changed the way we apply makeup and we are never going back — nunca I say!  The egg-shaped sponge came to life in ’07. It’s mostly known as the seamless liquid foundation applicator, but works well for powdering, highlighting and contouring.

Argentinian-American Gabriela Hernandez created Besame Cosmetics with vintage enthusiasts and makeup historians in mind. She spares no expense when it comes to detail. She enjoys working with graphic elements from the Art Nouveau, Art Deco, Machine Age, Egyptian Revival and Orientalist periods to evoke the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s.

New York City hairstylist, colorist and advocate for the conservation of the Amazon, Fabian Lliguin, a native Ecuadorian of Quechua descent, created the brand after learning the ancient beauty practices of the women of the Quecha-Shuar tribe. The plant-derived hair and body care line is formulated by one of the Amazon’s best-kept beauty secrets: Rahua.

Beauty is a cultural experience and form of expression passed down from abuelas, tias, and even hermanos (yes, we’re talking about you MannyMUA), so pay homage to your heritage with these great Latina-crafted finds at your nearest Sephora or Ulta¡Apúrate!

Willie Nelson, 84, Scoffs at Retirement Questions: ‘What Do you Want Me to Quit? I Just Play Music and a Little Golf’

Willie Nelson is 84 and he’s not thinking about retiring from music –probably ever.

When asked in an interview on CBS Sunday Morning whether he’s consider hanging up his guitar, the country legend-turned-pot activist scoffed.

“What do you want me to quit? I just play music and a little golf and I don’t wanna give up either one of those!”

He also doesn’t plan on giving up pot, either.

“For myself, it’s good for me,” he said. “It keeps me from going off and doing crazy things. I can relax and play some music and sit around and visit and act like a grown-up, I think.”

In the singer-songwriter’s latest album, God’s Problem Child, the country music star reflects on his life, sometimes using a humorous approach in songs like “Still Not Dead Yet.”

In Nelson’s memoir, It’s a Long Story, released in 2015, Nelson charted his adventures and bad boy, wild, freewheeling lifestyle of drugs, women and music. The artist has released at least 110 albums during the course of his long and sensational career.

Nelson lives on a ranch outside Austin, with his fourth wife, Annie. The couple has been married for more than 31 years.

Mayim Bialik on How She Tackles Talking Puberty with Her Sons: ‘We Don’t Want Them to Have Shame About Their Bodies’

Mayim Bialik is answering all the questions every young girl has about growing up in her new bookGirling Up: How to Be Strong, Smart and Spectacular – but how does she talk to her own sons about puberty?

The Big Bang Theory star and neuroscientist tells PEOPLE in this week’s issue, “We’ve always spoken to our children very frankly and in biologically appropriate terms.”

“We don’t want them to have shame about their bodies or fear about women’s bodies,” says Bialik. “While we tend to be a pretty socially conservative house in terms of how we dress and how we talk about modesty for boys and girls, we’re very matter of fact with them. We know that a daddy cell meets a mommy cell and all those things. ”

Bialik – who shares sons Frederick, 8, and Miles, 11, with ex Michael Stone – addresses female puberty taboos, as well as teen sexuality, body image and stress in Girling Up.

Want all the latest pregnancy and birth announcements, plus celebrity mom blogs? Click here to get those and more in the PEOPLE Babies newsletter.

The guide to how girls grow up was, in part, inspired by Bialik’s own youth as a “late bloomer,” and, she says, being “raised in a house where no one talked about any of this stuff.”

Now, as a trained science communicator, Bialik says she approaches things with her kids matter-of-factly.

“ know all about genetic signaling, and when sex is determined and we’ve talked about the hormonal basis for gender identity and things like that,” she tells PEOPLE.

“And they have plenty of questions – my ex-husband tells me they only ask me and he’s grateful for that. I’ll text him late at night, like, ‘Guess what I was just asked!’ and he’s like, ‘They don’t ask me those things.’ ”

And, luckily, keeping things “frank” seems to have worked. Says Bialik, “Miles was my first editor!”

Bialik’s book, Girling Up: How to Be Strong, Smart and Spectacular, is on sale now.

Want to Buy Green Beauty? Here’s What All Those Buzzwords Mean

In recent years, the trend towards green beauty has transitioned from “super crunchy” to “majorly mainstream,” with huge retailers including Target and Nordstrom expanding their natural beauty sections to keep up with demand. But how do you know if that natural beauty product you’ve picked up is really as good for you as the label indicates? Does “organic” automatically mean healthy, and who even ensures that all the claims are accurate? The FDA doesn’t implement much strict regulation about what harmful ingredients can’t be used in cosmetics, so it’s up to consumers to sift through the thousands of products on the market to figure out what’s actually good for us.

“Sadly, we are on our own when it comes to finding beauty products (and food for that matter!) that are truly safe,” RMS beauty founder Rose-Marie Swift told PeopleStyle. From dozens of different marketing terms to ingredients you probably can’t pronounce, it can feel overwhelming to find a product you can feel good about. So to cut through the clutter, we talked to some of the biggest experts in green beauty to break down exactly what all the terms and buzzwords you can’t stop hearing really mean.

What does it mean to be a certified organic beauty product?

Just because a product is labeled “organic” doesn’t necessarily mean it really is. “As part of the National Organic Program, you have to have a minimum content of 70 percent organic ingredients to get a ‘Made With Organic’ claim on the label,” said Tracey Favre, director of Quality Assurance International Inc. To be in the big leagues and earn an official UDSA seal, a product goes under even more scrutiny.

Buy It! Goop Replenishing Night Cream, $ 140;

“For the USDA seal, you have to have 95 percent or greater organic ingredients, and that extra 5 percent can’t be any ingredient that is listed as not allowed under the National Organic Program,” she added. So what about all those other products claiming to be organic? Stay wary – what you see may not be exactly what you think you’re getting. “The USDA doesn’t have jurisdiction over labeling claims on personal care products (they only do on the agricultural ingredients), so you really need to look for those marks to give you confidence of what you’re getting,” Favre said. “That is really key for consumers to understand.”

Buy It! Vert Beauty Concealer Pencil, $ 20; and Vert Beauty Eyeliner Pencil, $ 17;

What about all-natural beauty?

Although there is no official government organization that oversees the natural beauty market or pinpoints a specific definition for it, many brands go through third parties to get certification. “For us, natural means choosing the purest and best forms of the most effective, nature-derived ingredients available,” said Tata Harper, who created her own namesake natural skincare brand.

Buy It! Tata Harper Clarifying Moisturizer, $ 105;

According to Harper, the term “natural” in beauty means the complete formula is 100 percent synthetic free. “I thought consumer products were all tested and strictly regulated, and it was really shocking to learn that wasn’t the case,” she told us.

RELATED PHOTOS: Editors’ Picks: Sustainable/Eco-Friendly Items

Since there isn’t a specific regulating body for natural products, Harper turns to Ecocert, an organization that works to specifically certify ingredients as natural. “Getting certified is optional, but it’s what we do to give our customers more clarity,” she said. Read a product’s website and label closely to see how natural the product you’re using actually is.

Buy It! RMS Beauty Magic Luminizer, $ 38;

I’ve also been hearing about this thing called clean beauty. What’s that?

Like natural beauty products, for “clean” products, there is no official body by the government to regulate what’s what. But brands looking to reputably claim a “clean” designation get certified by a third party organization to give consumers confidence in what they’re buying.

“Clean safe, non-toxic and verified by a third party,” C2 California Clean co-founder Christine Falsetti told us. “A lot of things that are clean are also green. When I go in the shower, it all washes off into the ecosystem, so if you think about the larger footprint you have, it’s important.”

Buy It! C2 California Clean Advanced Hyaluronic Hydrating Primer, $ 105;

So what’s the difference between “clean” and “natural,” then? “I like to think of poison ivy and poison oak – that is something that is naturally occurring and beautiful in nature, but you’re not going to rub that on your body,” Falsetti said. “Or other things, like natural talc, can still cause allergic reactions in a lot of people, so that isn’t considered ‘clean.’”

What ingredients should I be wary of if I see them on an ingredient deck?

First and foremost, if anything on an ingredient list includes the words sulfates and parabens (which are used as artificial preservatives in cosmetics), it’s not green. “They have possible links to cancer and reproductive issues, and even though the link isn’t fully proven, there is enough doubt that we aren’t comfortable using it,” said Lanolips founder Kirsen Carriol.

Another big one to look out for: fragrance. “A lot of people use the word fragrance to mask bad ingredients in the product,” said Vert Beauty owner and makeup artist Amanda Hume. “Fragrance is a big red flag because you can hide a lot of things in it,” Farelli added. “Companies are allowed to use this term to hide the combination of other chemicals used in the ‘fragrance.’”

Mineral oil feels moisturizing on the skin, but in reality, speeds up aging. “It doesn’t penetrate the skin so it seals it and creates a barrier,” Hume said. “This doesn’t allow the skin to breathe (which is an important function of that organ) so it slows down the process of normal cell development which results in premature aging.”

Buy It! Savor Beauty Truffle Face Cream, $ 74;

What’s a good place to get started if I want to go green?

Don’t feel pressure to throw out all the beauty products you own and go all in right off the bat. “I think the best place to start is with products you use daily – whichever they are,” Harper said. “Say you use moisturizer daily but you don’t wash your hair daily. Start with moisturizer. Make a personal commitment and take your time finding the best things for you.”

Are you going green in your beauty routine? Tell us how in the comments below.

Josh Gad, Chris Pratt And J.J. Abrams Really Want Daisy Ridley To Spoil ‘The Last Jedi’

Josh Gad, Chris Pratt and J.J. Abrams really want answers about “Star Wars: The Last Jedi.”

On Monday, Gad shared a video on Twitter in which Pratt, Abrams and fellow members of Hollywood, such as Bryce Dallas Howard and Penelope Cruz, bombard Daisy Ridley with their questions about the upcoming film in the “Star Wars” franchise. But Ridley, who will reprise her role as Rey in the next installment, keeps mum on the subject.

Gad, who’s currently filming “Murder on the Orient Express” with Ridley, has been trying to get answers since January. He’s even enlisted help from Dame Judi Dench, but still, Ridley kept quiet.

To Gad’s dismay, Ridley hasn’t given him the answers he so desperately wants. And while she sometimes appears annoyed, her giggles in the clips lead us to believe she’s probably in on the joke.

You can check out a compilation of all the clips below:

We guess Gad and everyone else will just have to wait until Dec. 15, when “The Last Jedi” hits theaters.

Kanye West Doesn’t Want You To See Yeezy Season 5, But Here It Is Anyway

Anyone who has waited to see the inevitable debauchery of Kanye West’s Yeezy fashion show this year was probably disappointed. Just moments before show time, it was announced that that there would be no live stream of the event.

To add insult to monochromatic injury, not only was there no live stream, but attendees were informed there were also no photos or videos permitted during the show. Press was even apparently removed from the venue before the show started.

Still, content creators will be content creators, and there was plenty of imagery on social media and around the internet for us to see. Herewith, the imagery and videos Kanye West does not want you to see from Yeezy Season 5.

There was camo:

There were impossibly high snakeskin boots:

For what it’s worth, there seemed to be a consensus among attendees, including the New York Times’ Vanessa Friedman, that Season 5 was West’s most efficiently executed:

What Sex Therapists Tell People Whose Partners Don’t Want Sex

Being in a relationship with someone who’s disinterested in sex can feel incredibly lonely. A discrepancy in desire is more common than most people realize, though.

What’s the best way to address it with your spouse? Below, sex therapists share the advice they give people with higher sex drives than their partners.

1. Be honest with your spouse about your needs.

Don’t shut your partner out and quietly suffer through your sexual frustration. The first step you should take to improve your sex life is to tell your S.O. that you wish you were intimate more frequently, said Keeley Rankin, a sex therapist in San Francisco, California.

“See how your spouse responds,” she said. “Listen to what they say, feel and say they want. You never know, they may want more closeness as well.”

2. Discuss the things that make sex possible and the barriers in the way.

Without asking, there’s no way of knowing why your spouse is disinterested in sex. Maybe they’re just exhausted and too stressed out by the day’s end to initiate sex. Or if they’re experiencing sexual dysfunction of some kind (premature ejaculationerectile dysfunction or a lack of vaginal lubrication, for instance), it makes sense that they’re apprehensive about initiating sex.

“You have to consider the life, emotional and physical barriers that can affect sex and shift libidos,” said Elizabeth McGrath, a sex therapist and educator who works in the Bay Area. “If your spouse has been caring for others all day, for instance, they might not feel ready for sex until they’ve had a moment to themselves to feel nourished and decompress.”

Once you’ve pinpointed some potential causes, figure out a workaround as a team; schedule a doctor’s appointment if there’s a physical barrier to sex, or give your spouse some totally kid-free “me time” if exhaustion is the problem.

3. Try seduction, not criticism or pressure.

A slight mismatch in libido can easily become a larger one if the lower-desire spouse is badgered about the issue, said Danielle Harel, a sex therapist and the co-author of Making Love Real: The Intelligent Couple’s Guide to Lasting Intimacy and Passion

The mismatch often creates a cycle where the spouse with the higher sex drive complains, compares or criticizes their partner and the partner ends up having sex out of obligation, she explained.

Instead of pressuring your spouse, “see if you can find out what turns them on the most and try seduction,” Harel said. “Try saying (and really meaning), ‘It’s fine if we don’t have sex tonight but would you be willing to just open up to see if you start to get turned on?’”

She added: “Just because you start, doesn’t mean you have to go all the way. Make sure you have this agreement with your partner.”

4. Take turns initiating intimacy.

If you’re locked into a cycle of initiation and rejection, ask your spouse if they’d be willing to initiate some form of intimacy every few days, said Moushumi Ghose, a sex therapist and author of Classic Sex Positions Reinvented.

“Take turns each day initiating some kind of touch, even if if the goal isn’t orgasm, but just non-goal oriented sexy time,” she said. “The next day, the other person initiates. This can help balance out the playing field.”

5. See if your spouse is willing to make out.

Reconnecting sexually is all about taking slow, measured steps. If your partner is willing to have a hot make-out session or just touch, be open to that, said Celeste Hirschman, a sex therapist and the co-author of Making Love Real: The Intelligent Couple’s Guide to Lasting Intimacy and Passion.

“Oftentimes, when people are asking for sex, a lot of what they want is just enthusiastic, loving connection.” Hirschman said. “Just remember: You both have to be enthusiastic about it; it won’t be fulfilling if your partner just gives you sex without being present or enjoying the experience themselves.”

6. Get outside help.

Instead of dwelling on what’s missing in the relationship, consider the bond and attraction that still exists and build on that, McGrath said.

“Explore workshops, sex education resources and sex therapy that can expand your sexual horizons,” she said. “Look at what is possible and continue to talk about what else you can do together as a team.”

7. Keep bringing your sexual energy, but in a loving, calm way.

Don’t lose heart if you’re the higher-desire partner, said Ian Kerner, a sex therapist and New York Times-bestselling author of She Comes First: The Thinking Man’s Guide to Pleasuring a Woman.

“Higher-desire partners often get frustrated and feel rejected, creating a sexual disposition that is impatient and brittle and temperamental,” he said. “This often worsens the dynamic around sex and sometimes the higher-desire partner may opt out altogether, which is equally bad.”

The best thing you can do, according to Kerner, is to “stay in it to win it. That means nurturing arousal through positive acts of intimacy.”

Artists Really, Really Don’t Want Their Work On Ivanka Trump’s Walls

Shimmying my way into the weekend! #TGIF

A video posted by Ivanka Trump (@ivankatrump) on

Artists are well aware that Ivanka Trump, daughter and sort-of, kind-of future First Lady to the president-elect, is an avid collector of contemporary art. A cursory glance through her Instagram feed shows Ivanka, her kids, and her handbags posing around her upscale home among pieces by blue chip artists including Christopher Wool, Dan Colen, Alex Israel and Alex Da Corte.

There was a time when Ivanka was just an affluent businesswoman and socialite with decent taste. Now, however, she is poised to play an influential role in the upcoming Trump administration, and artists want nothing to do with her nor her father. The rapid shift has been something of a wake-up call for artists and dealers who have in the past worked with or sold to Ivanka’s family, and now feel complicit in the apparent bigotry and ignorance embodied in Trump’s rhetoric and cabinet picks.

Bloomberg published a piece yesterday compiling some of the artists who have publicly condemned Ivanka and demanded she remove their work from her property. Philadelphia-based artist Da Corte called her out in an Instagram post reading:

“Dear @Ivankatrump please get my work off of your walls. I am embarrassed to be seen with you.”

Da Corte also participated in a protest last month in front of Manhattan’s Puck Building, owned by Ivanka’s husband’s family. He marched with a crowd of artists including Marilyn Minter, Jonathan Horowitz and Rob Pruitt as part of a campaign called “Dear Ivanka” ― which hopes to address Ivanka directly on behalf of her father’s words, Tweets, appointments, and impending plans.

For some coastal liberals, it feels impossible to ever logically level with Donald Trump himself. Ivanka, however, feels a bit more accessible and thus, potentially, more receptive.

She frequents the art world, what’s sometimes called ‘the New York liberal bubble,’” curator Alison Gingeras, a leader of the movement, explained to The New Yorker. “So we already know we can speak with her, and we want to appeal to her personal stakes.”

Thus far, however, Ivanka has not responded to the “Dear Ivanka” protestors, nor to the many fears and anxieties they’ve disclosed. And until she does, the art world must continue to take a stand.

There has long been an economic divide between the people who make art and the people who buy it, but now more than ever artists working to resist the normalization of hate and protect the rights of marginalized communities are realizing the art marketplace is no longer an apolitical business.

As dealer Bill Powers, who sold Ivanka a Louis Eisner piece in 2013, put it, “I think there are a lot of artists that are uncomfortable now being incorporated, or leveraged, as part of the Ivanka Trump brand.”

Celebrity hairstylist Sarah Potempa is one of Hollywood’s biggest wave whisperers. Yes, you read that right. After being fed up with hearing women tell her how hard it was to create a style often deemed effortless, she spent two years constructing an automatic, rotating (a.k.a does-it-all) tool. And now after giving what we thought was already the greatest gift possible, Potempa’s sharing even more of her (easy!) secrets for low-key waves that’ll breathe new lift into ho-hum holiday party hair.

We’ve extolled it’s curl power before, oh and there’s the fact that it was the go-to tool behind nearly every hairdo at the 2016 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show (where Potempa personally used it to create Kendall Jenner’s amazing waves, nbd). Here are her five simple tips for creating the sexy look.

Derrick Salters/

1. Start with the perfect part: “I’ve known Lea Michele for over 10 years, and a relaxed wave is one of her signature looks. When we don’t want the style to look beachy, I part her hair in a nice, clean line first. Having that creates a more polished look.”

2. Curl pieces away from your face: “Even though Emily Blunt’s hair has a natural wave, I still go through it with a Beachwaver after I air-dry it to create a little bend going away from her face, just for a slight enhancement. If I don’t, her hair might look a little flat against her cheekbones. One rotation of the iron is all you need if you have a natural wave like hers.”

3. Leave the ends out of the iron: “Kendall Jenner likes her hair with a little less of a curl, so at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show in November, I avoided curling the ends—meaning the last two inches of each piece. It definitely goes against traditional curling technique, but doing so gives your look that relaxed vibe.”

RELATED PHOTOS: Nailed It! All the Scoop on the Victoria’s Secret Model’s Pretty Pink Manicures, Straight from Their Pro

4. Add lots of volume: “To give my clients like Bryce Dallas Howard even more fullness, after curling the hair, I spray it with a texturizer (among her favorites, Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray), then I take sections and lift them up to separate them so the look has a light airiness to it.”

Kristina Bumphrey/Starpix/REX/Shutterstock

5. Curl your fringe, too: “When you have slightly longer bangs, like Mandy Moore, you can use the Beachwaver to give them bend. Just clamp the ends of your hair and very slowly tap one of the buttons on the iron to rotate the barrel. Your hairstyle should look effortless, but finished!”

Comfortable Pumps That Won’t Make You Want To Rip Your Feet Off

Wearing heels can be total torture, and not just on your feet. Those extra few inches take their toll on your knees, legs and lower back, too.

But if years of trying to survive in heels have taught us anything, it’s that they don’t have to be bad for your body. Many brands are attempting to bolster their heels with padding, support and additional technology that’ll be easier on your tootsies.

Here are our picks for this holiday party season to keep you dancing instead of crying:

1. Cole Haan’s Antoinette Grand Pump, 100mm ($ 400)

The price tag of these babies is warranted, we promise. With “responsive energy foam,” “achilles padding,” and an “extended leather outsole,” there’s not much of a break-in period with these.

2. Ann Taylor’s Bette Suede Metal Heel Pumps ($ 128)

Coming soon: This full look. (Shop our new Fall arrivals this Friday.) #FallPreview

If the on-trend shiny heel doesn’t lure you in, then the comfort that comes with the chunky heel will. These are just as easy to walk in as they are on your eyes.

3. Rockport’s Total Motion Pointed Toe T-Strap ($ 120)

With soft uppers and a TPU plate for “controlled flexibility and stability,” the just-shy-of-3-inches heel gives wearers sex appeal and structure.

4. Boo Hoo’s Abbie Wide Fit Wrap Strap Heels ($ 52)

The wide fit on these ensures your toes aren’t going to be screaming for mercy at the end of the night while the giant block heel and ankle-wrap will keep you standing tall (or, at least, sturdy while you’re droppin’ it low).

5. LifeStride’s Sevyn Pump ($ 59.99)

You can snag this pointed-toe pump in various widths and its Soft System comfort package provides “support, flex, and cushioning” all day.

6. Chloe’s Lauren Scalloped Suede Pumps ($ 595)

These are a cult-classic for a reason: They epitomize glamour while also being understated and easy to throw on. They’re another shoe with a chunky heel that makes speed-walking through crowds a breeze.

7. Calvin Klein’s ‘Ciley’ Ankle Strap Pump ($ 75.90)

Ankle straps are both chic and purposeful ― especially when they’re made of buttery-soft suede. These have a cushioned footbed with a gel pod insert.

8. MICHAEL Michael Kors MK Flex Mid Pointed-Toe Pumps ($ 99)

We like the texture on these, but we love the flexible, padded footbed on them even more.

It’s OK If You Don’t Want To Be An Entrepreneur

Why do you really want to build a business?

  • To make your life more exciting?
  • To have more freedom?
  • To make more money?

You probably want more of everything! Great, because in addition to all of the above, business can also be:

  • more terrifying,
  • more depressing,
  • more exhilarating,
  • more mundane,
  • more lonely,
  • more aggravating,
  • more unsure,
  • more annoying,
  • more liberating,
  • more expensive,
  • more time-consuming,
  • more joyful,
  • more unpredictable,
  • more stupid
  • and, of course, more wonderful.

So it’s not that you won’t have fun starting a business. You will. A ton of fun.

But you’ll also go through a multitude of other emotions, states, feelings and stark realities, with that same fun mixed in randomly.

So now is the time to ask yourself: can you deal with all the elements of entrepreneurship, or are you just down for the fun stuff?

It’s ok if you really just want to experience the fun stuff that entrepreneurship has to offer.

I’m not judging. But I am pointing out that it’s simply not the way it is — and unfortunately, you don’t find out a lot of the other elements until you’re so deep in the game that it doesn’t make sense to quit. That’s why there’s so much talk about “hustle” and never quitting in the business space online — because so many entrepreneurs are too deep in the game to even consider turning around.

Once you’re a few years deep, it’s much harder to just “move on.” So you have to be extremely tough mentally in order to make it. That’s where the “hustle” mentality comes from. Not because entrepreneurs are some rare breed that don’t get tired — but because mental and emotional resilience is a learned trait that must be developed in order for us to survive.

I’m not trying to scare you. I’m just trying to share some things I wish people would have told me in the beginning.

People start businesses hoping that it will solve their biggest problems, all the while, forgetting that any new challenge — and make no mistake, running a real business is a huge challenge — will inevitably create new, previously unforeseen problems.

If you’re down for that, cool. If you’re not, just be honest with yourself. There’s no shame in getting a good job. Honestly.

For as much as I preach about building your own thing (and I do strongly believe in it) — I’d rather see you just be honest with yourself and do what’s actually going to make you happy, rather than trying to do something that isn’t “you” because looking at hundreds of pictures on Instagram every day has tricked you into thinking that you’re missing out on something.

Trust me, you’re not.

And let me assure you, there is nothing morally redeeming about being a business owner. A lot of the talk online equates having your own company with “giving back” or living your life “to the fullest” — as if there’s no other employment setting where this might be possible.

Entrepreneurship doesn’t bestow or imply any moral or ethical benefits.

Having a business isn’t a necessarily better way of living, it’s just an other way of living.

And this is your life. Any decision that you make for yourself will be correct — as long as you’re honest about what you really want.

I hope you enjoyed this article!

If you’re curious to know how I got started, and how you can begin your own journey to self- employment, you should enroll in my free mini-course on making more money. It’ll take you step-by-step through the process of creating a new business using skills you already have.

Why the Word SIMPLE Tells Me Absolutely Nothing About What You Want for Your Wedding – A Rant

SIMPLE is probably my least favorite word in the bridal vocabulary. What does it mean when a bride says she wants a SIMPLE wedding? That tells me absolutely nothing. I’m a wedding planner, not a psychic! 2016-04-26-1461699237-4796847-110813_SandyMalonePortraits201640x427.jpg

Just so we’re all clear on this, Merriam-Webster explains the word SIMPLE as having three primary definitions:

Not hard to understand or do
Having few parts, not complex or fancy
Not special or unusual

I have never met a bride or groom who didn’t want their wedding to be “special,” and regardless of what kind of wedding the couple chooses, rarely will it have “few parts” and be “not hard” to do. But even if the true definition of SIMPLE is what the bride and groom want, the word still tells me absolutely nothing about their vision of their wedding day.

To make sure I wasn’t missing something, I dug a little deeper for the extended definition of the word SIMPLE:

Free from guile
Free from vanity
Free from ostentation or display
Of humble origin or modest position
Lacking in knowledge or expertise
Not socially or culturally sophisticated

You get my point now, right? SIMPLE is probably the most overused word in weddings, while at the same time, its definition absolutely, positively does not apply to what the bride and groom are describing. A wedding is a “display” of your love, although it doesn’t have to be ostentatious. And nobody wants their wedding to be considered “not socially or culturally sophisticated” even if they’re DIYing every part of it! And let’s not pretend there’s not a little vanity in mind. Otherwise, brides wouldn’t spend so much on wedding gowns, shoes, hair and makeup. Your wedding day is one of the only days you’re allowed to be vain without feeling bad about it!

I believe most couples use the word SIMPLE when they mean easy and low stress – but wedding planners have to figure out what they’re describing. Some couples mean they’re not going to do fancy décor, or invite a lot of people. Telling a wedding planner that you want a SIMPLE wedding doesn’t give them enough information to estimate a budget or give you recommendations. Using a non-descriptive word like SIMPLE when talking about a wedding does a massive disserve to the couple and their vendors.

Some brides and grooms use the word SIMPLE as a synonym for inexpensive, and that’s not usually true. In fact, sometimes the things that look like the simplest choices are actually quite time-consuming and expensive to execute.

There’s a better way to describe what you need and want for your wedding to your vendors, and it involves using a LOT of adjectives.

  • When you start planning your wedding, think about what you really want in terms of details for your big day. Think color, texture, vibe – and write those things down. Do you have a particular theme in mind? Whether it’s a “Frozen” Winter Wonderland, or a tropical island paradise, the theme will dictate some of the colors you use, and style of display.
  • 2016-04-26-1461700105-7226675-JessicaandDavebouquetandflowercrown.jpg

  • Do you want a lot of candlelight? Or elaborate flower arrangements? Or both? How do you picture the lighting – will fairy lights on the tent and in the trees suffice, or do you want to create a more vintage feel with the bulbs of Italian lights strung throughout your event? For a modern wedding, you’ll probably want colorful uplighting, and maybe some designs. Nowadays, you can have pretty much anything you want, as long as you can afford it. The more elaborate you get, the more expensive it will be.
  • Use pictures to show what you like. It doesn’t have to be a picture of what you want exactly. It’s fine to say “this is the cake I want, except I don’t want the designs on the sides,” or “just like this but with three tiers, stripes on two tiers, and sugar flowers in more colors.” For choosing flowers, you can show your florist three different bouquets and explain that you like the colors in one, the shape of another, and the way the stems are wrapped in the third. A good wedding vendor will tell you what they need to do to create the look you want for your wedding day based on everything you show them.
  • 2016-04-26-1461699611-3233967-tracyandjeffcaketable.JPG

  • Consider the way you want your guests to feel at your wedding. Do you want things to feel very formal? Or do you prefer a more relaxed atmosphere with less structure? These are the things that will help determine whether you do a seated/plated meal with place cards, or a free for all with food stations that stay open for an extended period while your guests dance, mix, and mingle. Tell your caterer what you have in mind so they can recommend the best food options for your budget and vision.
  • Music plays a big role in the event, too. Tell your wedding planner what kind of wedding reception you want to have. For a party feel, you have to play party music. You’ll probably want something lower key during cocktails and dinner, but maybe not if you’re doing stations instead of asking all your guests to be seated at one time. A live band can do a lot to reinforce a theme – calypso music for something tropical or zydeco for a Mardi Gras celebration, for example – but you can do the same with a DJ as long as you create a fantastic playlist. Remember to choose songs your guests will want to dance to or the party won’t get started easily. Ask your wedding planner for suggestions. If you can’t afford live music all night, maybe you can afford a guitar trio or jazz quartet for cocktails and dinner, and then switch it up later in the evening.

Some couples are crazy-easy to work with because they’re super descriptive about their wants and needs. We did a neon wedding for two brides, and even dyed the flowers. Another bride wore a fantastic designer gown with a skirt that lit up when the reception started, and the lights went down, so we created a light-themed wedding reception with black lights, glow necklaces, glasses and bracelets. And I’ve tied enough burlap and lace around vases for “vintage” weddings that I could do it with my eyes closed.

Your wedding planner and wedding vendors want you to be happy on your wedding day, and that means we have to deliver as promised and help you execute your own vision of your big day. We don’t have crystal balls – although I wish we did. We can’t read your mind. If you want something, you have to tell us about it. Describe what you have in mind, and send us pictures if you have them. A wedding planner’s ability to create your dream wedding depends, first and foremost, on your ability to explain what kind of wedding you want, in detail.

Until next time, happy wedding planning from Sandy Malone Weddings & Events!

No, Women Voters Don’t Want To Be ‘Seduced’

Pro tip for dudes: When women are choosing who to vote for, they don’t want to be seduced — they want to be acknowledged.

After Donald Trump declared that all Hillary Clinton, the candidate who has won the greatest number of votes so far in the presidential primary, has going for her is the “woman card,” he was roundly (and rightly) criticized by many women. But in the face of mass sarcasm on Twitter, Piers Morgan decided to step in to defend the Donald’s street cred with the ladies.

In an op-ed for the Daily Mail, Morgan expounded on what women want, and why Donald Trump (who by all empirical evidence fares poorly among women) is the candidate who will deliver on that.

“I watch how the women behave at his gigantic rallies in all parts of America, and I don’t see much hatred in those ecstatic eyes; I see fevered adoration,” wrote Morgan, later commenting: “The irony of Hillary’s position is that there’s only one man in America who can possibly compete with Trump for populist appeal right now, and indeed his ability to seduce women, and that’s her husband Bill.”

Apparently, what women want is “swaggering self-confidence,” “charm,” “non-PC and non-politician style” — oh, and to be “seduced” by their future president.

One could write this off as an isolated incident of Morgan’s condescending language — he also says women “coo” over Trump and turn into “fawning putty” around him — but that would mean ignoring the larger, grosser trend of framing female voters’ interests in romantic terms.

Just weeks ago, white separatist (and Trump supporter) Paul Ray Ramsey advised Trump to “be nice” and then gave him tips on how to seduce women voters. In audio first published on the blog We Hunted The Mammoth, Ramsey tells Trump:

I know you’re a ladies man, your history, but just think about it like when you’re meeting girls or trying to seduce them, there’s a couple of phases. There is the attraction phase which you do well, you’re funny, you’re not a p*ssy, and girls like that. But if you stay in that assh*le mode too long, you don’t get into the comfort stage. And that’s where you are now. You need to get into the comfort stage of seduction — of seducing American women and just be nice.

More mainstream media outlets use coded language to frame women’s votes as well. Women voters aren’t just pandered to or appealed to — they are “wooed.”

(Occasionally the term “woo” is used to describe male voters, but far less frequently, and mostly when talking about the “sex appeal” of women candidates like Sarah Palin and Michele Bachmann. This is equally gross.)

And sadly, this is not a new trend — though perhaps in an election season dominated by misogyny and male anxiety it is exacerbated. In 2012, Romney tried to “woo women.” A 2014 ad by a conservative SuperPAC urged women voters to break up with their boyfriends, a.k.a. Barack Obama. And another 2014 ad, this time from the College Republican National Committee, shows young women choosing a candidate like a wedding dress on “Say Yes To The Dress.”

In reality, what most women voters want is for their opinions, their lives and their needs to matter to candidates. This is why women want to hear college tuition and reproductive rights and immigration and abortion and family leave and social security and equal pay discussed on the campaign trail and on debate stages.

Women aren’t looking to date their future president. So for the love of all things good, please stop talking about “seducing” us.

The Fashion and Accessories That Everyone Will Be Wearing (Or Want To!), As Predicted By Avenue 32’s Fashion Phenom, Roberta Benteler

Do you remember those beyond-cute macramé-detailed bikinis that just about every chic girl seemed to be flooding your Instagram with last summer? How about those candy-colored faux-fur coats that are equal parts adorable and cool, seen on the likes of Alexa Chung and a ton street style stars?

Those are just two of the many gems that you can thank Roberta Benteler for. No, she’s not the designer for swimwear line, Kinii, or outerwear brand, Shrimps, which we’re referencing above—but she is the one who put both of those brands on the map—or rather, the geotag.

Allow us to explain. The German-born, London-based Benteler has long been obsessed with fashion, but what’s more is that she has a gift that we like to call “the scent.” Benteler can sniff out the next It Bag, It Brand, and even It Girl, before designers and fashion folk get plugged in. Luckily for every style-savvy woman out there, the 30-year-old is putting her powers of fashion fortune-telling to good use, with her e-commerce site, Avenue 32.

Roberta Benteler

Benteler travels the globe to discover new design talents, but she’s also always scouring Instagram for new brands to bring to her site. It’s rife with colorful, unique, and of-the-moment finds from the likes of Vika Gazinskaya, Cédric Charlier, and Galvin (and not to worry if those names aren’t familiar to you yet; give it some time and you can bet your feed will be flooded with them soon). She discovered Kinii when she saw it on Instagram, and acted fast, becoming their first-ever retailer. “When we met Ipek [Irgit], she was the designer in a little showroom in New York City, she had just started making them and none of us had any idea of how big the brand would get in such a short space of time,” Benteler told Glamour. “The designs are incredibly visually striking and caught my eye immediately.”

A photo posted by Bar Refaeli (@barrefaeli) on

Bar Refaeli in her Kinii bikini. The style has also been worn by fashion trendsetters Leandra Medine, Dree Hemingway, Hannah Bronfman, and Cara Delevingne.

Shrimps, too, was a fascinating find, and shows just how much a great retailer can influence designers themselves. “In Shrimps’ case, Hannah [Weiland] walked into the Avenue 32 office wearing her first-ever shrimps coat,” Benteler recounted. “She was an intern at another designer and dropped something off—we saw her coat and instantly ordered 50 of them!”

Marta Pozzan, Alexa Chung, and Kate Foley wearing Shrimps coats.

How did she hone her eye, or yes, “the scent”? Some of it is inherent, but what makes Benteler able to turn her fashion obsession into something you can actually buy is that, in addition to going to fashion school, she also began her career in the staid, suited world of finance. “Ever since I can remember, I have wanted to start my own business,” said Benteler. “Coming from a family of entrepreneurs and fashion being my first love, it was naturally what I gravitated toward. Although I did go through phases where I wanted to become a fashion designer and have my own label. Who knows, maybe as a next project!”

Today, with Avenue 32, she’s aiming to take the rush of excitement she gets when she finds new talents to shoppers across the globe. “[I want] to bring back the element of discovery to shopping,” she said. “I feel like a treasure hunter when I am looking for new brands for the site and that is how I would like our clients to feel when they discover the brands on Avenue 32.”

That said, we asked Benteler to make some fashion predictions for the upcoming spring season and she opened up her top-secret photo album to us (some pieces are so new, they haven’t even been professionally photographed yet!). Get your thumbs ready to like:

‘Sex And The City’ Creator Darren Starr Didn’t Want Carrie To End Up With Big

In another world, Carrie Bradshaw may not have had her happily ever after with Mr. Big.

Show creator Darren Starr revealed in a new Kindle Singles interview that he believes the show’s finale went against its central conceit.

“… if you’re empowering other people to write and produce your show, you can’t … say certain things,” Starr said.

“At a certain point, you’ve got to let them follow their vision. … But I think the show ultimately betrayed what it was about, which was that women don’t ultimately find happiness from marriage,” he continued. “Not that they can’t. But the show initially was going off script from the romantic comedies that had come before it. That’s what had made women so attached.”

In other words, if Starr had been behind the wheel, we might have seen Carrie stomp off alone into the dust, pair of Manolos encasing her independent woman feet.

As it were, she got Big (Chris Noth), who, just last week, had a “Sex and the City” reunion with Carrie Bradshaw’s other love interest Aidan (John Corbett) at the Open Road Films’ Golden Globes party for “Spotlight.”

No word yet on if either one brought up that insane Carrie-Aidan kiss from “Sex and the City 2.”

On another note, there seems to have been a whole lot of “Sex and the City” press of late. Cue the conspiracy theories that the show is trying to have a Netflix reunion or something.
