Christian Siriano on Emmys, Inclusivity and New York Fashion Week

Christian Siriano made a summer stop in Los Angeles this week, just in time for Thursday’s Emmy nominations announcement. That night, he hosted a dinner at Chateau Marmont with 11 Honoré, the size-inclusive luxury e-commerce site cofounded by Patrick Herning and Kathryn Retzer. Said Herning, “Christian was one of the first designers we launched with and he’s still one of our best-selling designers a year later. He’s really on board with changing the game.” The designer’s inclusive approach to retail and celebrity dressing has heightened his profile, but he remains as down-to-earth and energetic as ever. “I’m always up sending e-mails in the middle of the night, because otherwise, what are you going to do? We’re there for our customers.”
WWD: When was the last time you were in L.A.?
Christian Siriano: I came for my book launch last November and for a few quick Oscar fittings in January. We dressed almost 17 people and I barely was here. I don’t know how we did that; it was crazy.
WWD: With Emmy nominations on Thursday, has your phone and e-mail already been blowing up?
C.S.: We already got a couple of e-mails, which I love. Judith Light and I were texting and Leslie Jones

Escada Preps for First New York Fashion Week Show, Amid Brand Revamp

LONDON — Escada has been in the process of refreshing its image, having recruited designer Niall Sloan and introduced a new store concept on London’s Sloane Street last year.
Now, to mark this shift in direction and the brand’s 40th anniversary, the German label is planning its first runway show during New York Fashion Week, in a bid to highlight its international appeal and speak to a broader audience.
“Given all our activities around the refreshing of our brand, we felt that this was a fantastic moment to go out and join an international fashion week. We decided to go to New York because the U.S. is one of our core markets; we have been there since day one. We have a strong retail presence in the country and very strong relationships with some of the best department stores,” said Iris Epple-Righi, the brand’s chief executive officer. “We need to show the brand to a wider audience, which we wouldn’t have been able to [achieve] if we were to only do a presentation.”
The show — which will host buyers, press, as well as the brand’s most important customers from across the globe — will also offer Sloan a platform to showcase his

Industry Adapts to Shifting Milan Men’s Fashion Week

MILAN — A shrinking show calendar, currency volatility and macro economic issues at the tail end of a period of local political instability following Italy’s general elections were only some of the concerns weighing on executives on the eve of Milan Men’s Fashion Week.
But on the upside, business is chugging along steadily. Revenues generated by the fashion sector last year grew 2.5 percent to 64.8 billion euros, and exports rose 4.3 percent to 50 billion euros, according to Camera Nazionale della Moda Italiana’s Fashion Economic Trends report issued in May. The first half is expected to show 1.5 percent growth in sales compared with the same period last year. Last week, the updated Altagamma Worldwide Market Monitor and Bain & Co. study painted a pretty picture, as the global personal luxury goods industry is expected to grow 6 to 8 percent at constant exchange compared with the 5 percent growth forecast last October for 2018.
“Everyone is hoping to see a modicum of stability, which would allow us to set goals in the medium-term, invest in three-year plans without this sense of anxiety hovering over us,” said Paolo Roviera, chief executive officer of Corneliani. LES HOMMES URBAN

Les Hommes is expanding into streetwear with the launch of the Les Hommes Urban line, which is available for sale at the brand’s Milan showroom during fashion week.
“The LHU collection was born out of a creative and a practical idea. When we go back to the very early days of Les Hommes, there were a lot of urban influences in the collection, such as graffiti and workwear. It is a creative playground that we always embraced and are very fascinated by,” said Tom Notte, who designs the collection with longtime business partner Bart Vandebosch.
“From the practical point of view, we were pushed to launch LHU by the feedback we were getting from our own stores. In Antwerp, where the first store was founded, we were confronted with a demand from young guys who were very interested in our collection, but because of its positioning, it was out of reach for them. We created a streetwear brand that carries the originality of a designer brand since many pieces are treated and designed with the same care as we do for Les Hommes.”

EXCLUSIVE: VFiles Announces Runway 10 Show, Mentor Committee for New York Fashion Week

It’s back to the runway for VFiles, which will be holding its 10th show on Sept. 5.
Last season, instead of the traditional runway/performance extravaganza the company hosts, it staged “Be Heart, Make Noise,” an immersive music and fashion event done in collaboration with Adidas Originals. In the past, runway shows included celebrity guest judges such as Khloé Kardashian and Young Thug. For VFiles Runway 10, the brand is bringing its event a bit more down to earth by, for the first time, appointing a committee of eight industry leaders that will select and mentor show contestants throughout their journey to New York Fashion Week. After that, the VFiles team will provide mentorship for the following season. The pivot brings a slightly more serious — yet welcome — tone to the show that has otherwise been high on experimental fashion.
The mentor committee includes: Julie Anne Quay, founder and chief executive officer of VFiles; Laura Brown, editor in chief of InStyle magazine; Rio Uribe, designer and founder of Gypsy Sport; Candy Pratts Price, fashion consultant; Anna Trevelyan, stylist and creative consultant; Erin Magee, founder of MadeMe; Paul Cupo, designer, and James Costas-Michael, merchandise director of VFiles.
Also new for the season;

St. James’s Retailers, Barbour International Take a Streetwear Turn at London Fashion Week Men’s

STREET SMARTS: Traditional men’s wear retailers from Jermyn Street, St. James’s took to the sidewalks of London for their fourth open-air show in a see-now-buy-now format during London Fashion Week Men’s.
New to the fashion week fixture were brands Paul & Shark, Aspinal of London and Grenson. The three brands joined seasoned labels Harvie & Hudson, John Smedley, Lock & Co. and Aquascutum in flexing their sartorial muscles.
The Jermyn Street retailers favored mustard yellow and cornflower blue separates. Bright, colored socks added a pop to traditional looks.

There were also streetwear staples in the mix, in the form of a camouflage-print windbreaker, a fishnet vest top and laid-back pieces such as cable-knit jumpers, gray track pants and basic T-shirts.
The see-now-buy-now presentation also saw female models dressed in men’s wear. One model wore a dark green slim-fit suit while another showed off a more summer-y look: Navy blue tailored shorts and a relaxed red pullover.
Later in the week, Barbour International showed off streetwear looks, too, incorporating elements from the brand’s classic Bedale jacket and T-shirts with retro-style brand logos.

Postapocalyptic Theme Ran Through 5,000 Works at London’s Graduate Fashion Week

LONDON — This year’s Graduate Fashion Week was one of the largest events to take place in size and ambitions with more than 5,000 pieces of work on display from 500 students — the majority of whom hailed from outside the U.K.
Graduate Fashion Week is a charity that was founded in 1991 and aims to bring together British and international fashion universities and elevate the creative industries.
“We’ve had more visitors than we’ve ever had. We’ve got 37 U.K. universities and 51 international ones, so we have managed to create a global stage for everyone,” said Mark Newton-Jones, chairman of Graduate Fashion Week.
“We’re trying to bridge the gap between graduates and employers, we’ve introduced a protégé program so everyone up for an award tonight will be mentored by a designer or leader in the industry,” he said.
Hosted in east London’s Old Truman Brewery, the awards ceremony opened with a personal message from British Prime Minister Theresa May. “I am very proud of the U.K.’s fashion industry, some of the most iconic brands and biggest names in the business hail from the U.K. Graduate Fashion Week plays such an important role in the process of nurturing the very best talents.”

Clothing Optional! Kim Kardashian West Celebrates the End of the Week as She Poses Topless in Bed

Kim Kardashian West is ending the weekend on a high note.

Stripping down to just a pair of panties, the Keeping Up With the Kardashians star, 37, shared a sultry shot of herself on Sunday lounging in bed while topless.

“HAPPY SUNDAY,” she captioned the image.

While the reality star never needs a reason to celebrate her curves, her bedroom snap comes just two days after Kardashian West revealed she had already lost 5 lbs. on her pre-Met Gala cleanse.

“Today is day 4 of the cleanse and I am 5 lbs. down,” the 37-year-old remarked on social media, after announcing she was doing the 10-day Sunfare Optimal Cleanse.

Despite the fact that the reality star has “worked so hard working out” recently, on Thursday she revealed on her website/app that she needed a little extra help to feel ready for the fashionable event next month because she had “started eating a lot of sweets.”

“I wanted to just change my food patterns to eat healthier and cut sugar out of my life as much as I can,” she wrote. “We always have sweets around and it’s really hard when there are temptations everywhere.”

As the mother of three has upped her focus on toning her physique, she’s also thanked trainer Melissa Alcantara for helping her transform her body “when I wasn’t happy with what I saw back in the mirror.”

“I spent a whole year training so hard 5 or 6 days a week putting in a lot of work and changed the way that I eat and there’s such a noticeable difference,” the reality star wrote alongside a bikini snap last week, adding that now not only was her body firmer, but also that she had “less cellulite and so much more” confidence.

“THANK YOU for waking up at 5am to do crazy bodybuilding workouts & springs that I hate 😜& putting me on to this lifestyle,” she added.

La Rinascente Unveils Special Windows for Milan Design Week

ARTY WINDOWS: Rinascente teamed with Georgian artist Vajiko Chachkhiani to celebrate Miart and Milan Design Week, the two international events hosted in Milan Apr. 12-22.
For the occasion, the artist, who represented his native country at the latest edition of the Venice Biennale, created a striking installation for the windows of the department store facing Milan’s Duomo Cathedral.
Called “Under the Midday Sun,” the project includes eight blue unfinished sculptures representing a cotton picker, a tiger and a horse, all surrounded by dry bushes and bare trees shaken by the wind.
“This is my first time collaborating with a retailer and it was actually fun,” Chachkhiani said. “With this installation, I wanted to highlight how an underpaid job, like cotton-picking, progressively destroys people — just as the wind transforms nature day after day.”

Naomi Campbell Walks Arise Fashion Week

Six years after the last Arise Fashion Week, the event that billed itself as Africa’s premier fashion showcase despite strong competition from rival platforms in South Africa and Nigeria made a comeback — and made it with a strong statement, care of supermodel Naomi Campbell walking down the runway.
Campbell jetted into Lagos, Nigeria last Thursday, and on Friday opened Nigerian designer Lanre Da Silva Ajayi’s show in a shimmering metallic gold gown with a fringed gold skirt. The audience was totally unprepared for the supermodel surprise. Then she opened the celebrated South African design duo Kluk CGDT’s fashion show, strutting along the catwalk in a glamorous fringed lilac geometric-print coat dress.  She elicited whoops of approval from the audience.  “We are so honored,” Malcolm Kluk and Christiaan Gabriel Du Toit said.
Campbell’s presence in Lagos was expected as part of her AFW promotional duties, which included meeting with Nigerian president Muhammadu Buhari; she toured a luxury development with him. But no one expected her to actually walk any of the shows.

Pascal Millet, Anne Sofie Madsen Cancel Paris Fashion Week Shows

LIGHTENED LOAD: What started out as a thinner Paris Fashion Week has become even lighter.
In a break with a nine-year tradition, Pascal Millet has canceled his runway show. The French designer, who was scheduled to take the 7 p.m. slot on March 1, said in a brief statement that the brand recently opened up to new investors, without elaborating further. Sales sessions will still be held on March 3 to 9 as originally planned.
Also canceling her show is Danish designer Anne Sofie Madsen, who was scheduled for 7 p.m. on March 4. The brand did not provide an explanation and did not respond immediately to a request for comment.
The late-stage bow-outs came as a handful of other labels were notably absent this season for a variety of reasons.
Alexis Mabille is foregoing his runway show for showroom appointments, which will be accompanied with a film clip, to present his new collection. The French designer said he is focusing on tuxedos and evening gowns.
Esteban Cortázar ended a dozen-year run in Paris and moved to New York for his fall collection, accepting a one-season invitation. It was a homecoming of sorts; the Colombian-born designer started his fashion career in Miami and debuted his

Retailers Saw Variety and Quality at Milan Fashion Week

MILAN — It wasn’t an easy week, with a packed show schedule, lots of rain and the so-called Beast from the East, or polar vortex, blowing into town on Sunday, bringing with it Arctic temperatures. Despite the inclement weather, buyers were buzzing about the variety and quality they found in Milan. “Milano, Milano, Milano — what an energizing week full of imagination, vision and creativity,” said Roopal Patel, Saks Fifth Avenue senior vice president, fashion director. “The collections at Milan Fashion Week continue to excite and delight our senses on every level.” She cited Gucci’s “theatrical Cyborg show,” Prada’s “high-energy industrial couture” and the Moncler Genius project as among the highlights.
The Eighties trend remained strong, as did oversize outerwear. Retailers cited tartans and animal patterns, neon and pop colors, logomania, sportswear influences, faux fur and quilted looks as some of the recurring elements in the collections. As Coco Chan, Stylebop.com head of women’s wear said, “the new mood is all about more is more. Pile on the layers with prints, patterns, textures and embellishments.”
Here, a roundup of the Milan highlights from the mouths of retailers:
Linda Fargo, senior vice president, women’s fashion director and store presentation at Bergdorf Goodman:
FAVORITE COLLECTIONS: Prada, Gucci, Attico and Moncler.

Arab Fashion Council Plots Arab Fashion Week Riyadh, Partners With British Fashion Council

LONDON — The Arab Fashion Council is starting to lay the foundations for the development of a sustainable infrastructure across the Arab world, with a strategic partnership with the British Fashion Council and the debut of the first Arab Fashion Week in Riyadh.
The nonprofit organization, which represents 22 countries across the Arab world and has recently set up a regional office in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, is aiming to use the event as a platform to support local talent, as well as international names looking to enter the Arab market.
“The history and trajectory of the BFC goes hand in hand with what we are trying to achieve: nurturing young talent and adopting an international vision,” said Princess Noura Bint Faisal Al Saud, the organization’s honorary president.
In turn, the AFC will work toward providing opportunities for London-based designers to tap into the Arab market.
Jacob Abrian, the founder and chief executive officer of the AFC, pointed to the fact that their efforts are aligned with the government’s broader vision to diversify the economy of Saudi Arabia and create opportunities for its increasingly young generation — 70 percent of the population being under 30. “Most Arab countries are looking to diversify; Abu Dhabi, for example, announced that

Central Saint Martins’ MA Students Present Graduate Collections at London Fashion Week

Student graduate shows can be hit or miss but the 19 MA students from Central Saint Martins presented an exciting mix that ran the sartorial gamut from extreme silhouettes and innovative textiles to sleek tailoring in more traditional fabrications.
Among the highlights: Liam Johnson, whose sculptural silhouettes opened the show; Elise Perrotta’s all cream collection featuring wardrobe staples in textural knits, and women’s wear designer Edwin Mohney, who closed the show with a provocative collection that included conceptual pieces made using inflatables wrapped in packing tape.
As in past seasons, craftsmanship in the men’s wear stood out. Particularly noteworthy was Olaf Tavares Vieira, whose draped men’s wear collection was awarded the L’Oreal Professional Creative Award. Inspired by utilitarianism and the stomach as the center of the body, his lineup included fluid ankle-grazing coats, along with sweaters with cutouts in the back and slouchy trousers enveloping the torso that had a monkish appeal.
“I like clothes that are close on the neck and belly and on the ankle,” Vieira explained. “It gives me a kind of strength, even if the clothes are soft.”
He shared the prize with women’s wear designer Rebecca Jeffs, whose tactile collection was a clever play on famous sayings such as

Female Activists, Antifur Protesters Fight Their Causes at London Fashion Week

BARE NECESSITIES: Topless, or scantily clad, female activists braved the cold February weather to stage protests during fashion week, capitalizing on the media throngs at shows to gain attention.
On Friday, both PETA supporters and advocates for a more body-inclusive runway caused scenes, shouting out for their respective causes. The antifur contingent had “wear your own skin” painted on their bare torsos, and encouraged passersby to stand up for animals by embracing a vegan wardrobe. On the subject of fur, Elisa Allen, director of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, said: “It’s not fabric, and it’s not ours for the taking.”
Meanwhile, the pro-curves protesters held plaques that read “fashion rules rewritten” and wore lingerie by Simply Be, a plus-size brand. American model and actress Hayley Hasselhoff led the way, accompanied by eight activists who demanded to know when more curvaceous women will be seen on runways. Angela Spindler, chief executive officeroff N Brown Group plc, which owns Simply Be, said: “This isn’t about ‘skinny shaming.’ We think that shape should be celebrated irrespective of size.”
The women all got their say – and a few goosebumps.

Paris Men’s Week: Great Expectations

PARIS — As the coed trend continues to suck puff out of men’s weeks’ sails, Paris, as the proverbial capital of fashion, is still showing resistance.
The palpable buzz around the week, which opened Tuesday, bodes well for the city’s returning confidence. The greater Paris region in 2017 saw a record 23.1 million hotel arrivals, according to the Paris Convention and Visitors Bureau, coming off a gloomy 2016 that was impacted by a spate of terrorist attacks.
Against a baseline of men’s wear stalwarts like Dries Van Noten, Comme des Garçons, Thom Browne and Rick Owens, Vetements’ off-calendar show — after having staged a “No-Show” event in a Paris car park last June — has added fizz to this season, while excitement is also mounting around the debut Maison Margiela men’s collection under the creative direction of John Galliano, both showing on Friday. It’s been a step-by-step process for the designer.
“The strategy of the maison is rooted into a single unified and consistent message, with John Galliano’s vision at its core. Allowing this creative vision to develop and expand consistently throughout the house first required a thorough exploration and redefinition of the brand codes,” said Riccardo Bellini, chief executive officer of Maison

Ones to Watch: Paris Men’s Fashion Week

PARIS — From the debut collection of design-led sustainable men’s brand, Phipps, to Nïuku’s modern-day tribute to men’s tailoring of yore, here are some of the new talents to look out for at Paris Men’s Fashion Week, which kicks into high gear today.
Phipps

A look by Phipps.

“It’s about acknowledging that we’re all people, we’re in this together,” said Spencer Phipps, founder of Phipps, a new men’s wear line mixing sustainability and style that is due to launch on Jan. 20 during Paris Men’s Week. (The venue is still to be confirmed.)
The Paris-based designer, who is from San Francisco, cut his teeth in the men’s studio of Marc Jacobs in New York before working for Dries Van Noten in Antwerp for three years. After leaving Van Noten, he spent eight months researching manufacturers and materials. “I did my graduate collection in sustainability in 2008 at Parsons and it was like a joke. I ended up finding one manufacturer in New England that was basically some hippy commune that made hemp and linen and one cotton flannel,” he said.
So Phipps opted to work with manufacturers in Portugal, “a country that is basically certified [for sustainability].”
“After their economy crashed, at the same time as everyone

Lulu Guinness Set to Join London Fashion Week Lineup

SHOW TIME: British accessories designer Lulu Guinness is planning to join London Fashion Week schedule in February for the first time in the brand’s 28-year history.
The presentation will take place over two days from Feb. 17-18, so that industry members and consumers can attend.
It promises to be a “sensory and energetic” experience, according to Guinness.
“I’ve created something that is fun, interactive and sharable on social media. What people like about my brand is the playful, witty nature, so it will be a larger-than-life version of that,” she added.
The presentation will also include see-now-buy-now elements, with a selection of items at the event immediately available at the brand’s web site and the Covent Garden flagship.
Guinness said it was the right time to add her name to the British Fashion Council’s official schedule, having expanded her range to include clothing and footwear last year.
“Where else would we debut other than London? This is our home and heart of the brand. We love what the BFC has done for London Fashion Week in the last decade, it’s an exciting time to be part of British fashion,” she added.

U.K.’s Graduate Fashion Week Travels to New York

SPECIAL RELATIONSHIP: In an effort to strengthen its international ties, Britain’s Graduate Fashion Week plans to mount a showcase in New York on Jan. 16.
“We have a great relationship with three major New York educational institutes: FIT, Pratt and Parsons,” said Graduate Fashion Week creative director Martyn Roberts. “And while in NYC on our weeklong showcase, we plan to visit each institute to see the upcoming talent we can expect on the International Catwalk Competition for 2018.”
Hilary Alexander, a GFW trustee and journalist, said there is a long-standing relationship between U.K. fashion graduates and the American fashion industry. “Many major U.S.-based companies such as Gap and Calvin Klein are hiring British fashion graduates, so it makes perfect sense to make New York the next stop for GFW this January.”
Graduate Fashion Week is a charity, platform and showcase for students from a range of global universities. Patrons include Christopher Bailey, Victoria Beckham, Vivienne Westwood and Nick Knight. This is the first time it is hosting events outside the U.K. and in association with SmartFocus, a digital messaging cloud.
The showcase will include the collections and portfolios of students from international universities.

London Fashion Week Men’s Fall 2018: Ones to Watch

John Alexander Skelton
Born and raised in York, John Alexander Skelton received his master’s in fashion men’s wear at Central Saint Martins and took on internships at E. Tautz and Patrik Ervell before launching his label last year. Selected by Giles Deacon, Skelton is a recipient of the Sarabande scholarship, an initiative from The Lee Alexander McQueen Foundation that aids young designers. He is working out of a studio at Sarabande in east London.
Sustainability is a key theme for Skelton, who incorporates repurposed materials into his ranges and takes a DIY approach to his work. He has a loom in his studio and many of his fabrics are handwoven, as is much of his knitwear. “Everything I dye is also done by hand using natural dye. The handcrafted element is my signature, in a way,” said the designer.
For fall 2018, Skelton has been working with mills in Ireland, mixing British wool and Irish linen.
“I have been doing a lot of hand weaving, as well, on the loom. I have also done a few natural dyes this time, one using an ancient European dye, the European version of indigo, called woad,” he said.
Skelton’s main focus has always been on the process and

Milan Men’s Fashion Week Reflects Industry Changes

MILAN — The latest Milan Men’s Fashion Week schedule reflects the changes in the men’s wear industry, according to Carlo Capasa, president of Italy’s Camera Nazionale della Moda.
“The concept of how men’s wear is shown has changed and so has the concept of the calendar — everything is combined together and there is more and more cross-pollination,” Capasa contended. “The shift is real.”
The shows will start on Jan. 12 with the Ermenegildo Zegna evening show and will end on Jan. 15, anchored by the Giorgio Armani and Fendi shows. Overall, the runway shows will be 31 in total.
Capasa said the evolution has led the association to create a new format for the calendar, which now “combines presentations and shows in a single tale that each brand offers in line with its own aesthetic and vision.”
The first chapter of coed shows, as Capasa called it, will take place in January, followed by the second chapter in February. Next month these will include Diesel Black Gold; the Italian brand Isabel Benenato founded by Isabel Vitiello; Neil Barrett; Marcelo Burlon County of Milan; Dsquared2; Daks; Sartorial Monk; Palm Angels; GCDS, and Frankie Morello. Sharon Osbourne Says Simon Cowell Is ‘Doing So Much Better’ Nearly a Week After Hospitalization

Simon Cowell is on the mend after his hospitalization.

Early Friday morning, the America’s Got Talent judge, 58, was rushed to the hospital after fainting and falling down the stairs at his London home. His rep said he couldn’t sleep and was trying to get a glass of hot milk.

Now that he’s had nearly a week to rest  — he missed the first live episodes of the current season of X Factor UK in England on Saturday and Sunday — fellow judge Sharon Osbourne said Cowell is “going to be okay.”

“He’s doing so much better,” Osbourne, 65, shared on Wednesday’s The Talk. “His partner, Lauren, came down to on both nights, so she was there flying Simon’s flag.”

“She was just saying that he suffers from low blood pressure anyway,” Osbourne said of Cowell’s partner Lauren Silverman, with whom he shares 3-year-old son Eric. “Because of the concussion, that’s why he couldn’t come back.”

Following the scary incident, Cowell admitted that the moment was a wake-up call reminding him that he needs to take better care of himself.

“I’d gone to get some hot milk because I felt ropey. On the way back upstairs, I just remember feeling really dizzy,” Cowell told The Sun.

He continued, “Next thing I know someone was putting a neck brace on me and I had a terrible headache, which must have been from me hitting the stairs. I was worried at first that I’d done some real damage.”

“Sometimes we get a reminder that we’re not invincible and this was certainly mine. It was a huge shock,” said Cowell, who returned to his London home hours after his hospitalization on Friday afternoon. “They think I fainted because I had low blood pressure and so I have got to really take good care of myself to sort that out. After all I am a dad and have more responsibility than ever.”

Cowell concluded: “I know I was very lucky I didn’t hurt myself seriously. It could have been a lot worse. I must say, everyone at the hospital were incredible. I’m truly grateful.”
