Larry and Toby Milstein Expand ‘Millennial Pink Party’ Into Weekend Long Retreat

The second annual Millennial Pink Party takes to the Hamptons this weekend, and this year the concept has been expanded into a full weekend of events with the help of partners like BCBGeneration, Bloomingdale’s and The Class by Taryn Toomey.
Millennial Pink Party made its debut last year as the re-branded take on the Milstein family’s annual summer Hamptons bash. Real estate scions Larry and Toby Milstein embraced the rosy hue and moved the party to the Breakers in Montauk to lure the young Manhattan social crowd for the party, in partnership with the Human Rights Campaign.
After its success, the one-night event has grown into a weekend, which begins tonight with a private beachside dinner hosted by Whispering Angel. The guest list for Friday night is made up of the Millennial Pink Founders Collective, who are categorized as “a handpicked group of 25 VIP taste makers who will serve as social ambassadors for the Millennial Pink community and provide creative direction on the event.”
Come Saturday, celebrity workout favorite Taryn Toomey will host a session of her workout The Class for guests, followed by the official party at night and a brunch to close things out on Sunday.
The event last year raised more than $ 15,000 for

Dior Celebrates Berlin Flagship in Time for Berlin Gallery Weekend

Starring Dior: Dior’s Berlin flagship opened on Kurfürstendamm in January, but who wants to celebrate in the gray of winter? Plus with a Spring/Summer 2018 Dior women’s theme paying homage to Niki de Saint Phalle, as well as the retail space’s assorted artistic touches, what better time for an official store fete than on the eve of Berlin Gallery Weekend Wednesday night?
Outside, a large, silver-mosaic sculpture in the spirit of de Saint Phalle’s iconic “Tarot Garden” set the party’s glistening tone, while inside one found the artist’s jubilant designs on boxlike clutches or embroidered sweaters. Fueled by an endless flow of Ruinart, a DJ set by the striking Melis, and the Dior ready-to-wear and accessories collections for men and women, the official opening party garnered enthusiastic response from local and international customers, assorted guests and the growing cadre of Dior-loving German actors, actresses and artists.
Wearing Dior’s silver mesh gladiator boots and a long black-and-white-dotted crepe-de-chine dress, cut open to reveal matching hot pants, young “Dark” star Lisa Vacari was having her first Dior experience. And it won’t be her last. Nominated for Bunte’s New Faces Award, she’ll be wearing Dior again tonight, and yet again on Friday at the German

Bikinis and Spa Time! Gwyneth Paltrow and Girlfriends Relax During Bachelorette Weekend

Gwyneth Paltrow is treating herself during her bachelorette getaway.

The 45-year-old actress flew down to Cabo, Mexico with some of her closest friends to celebrate her upcoming wedding to producer Brad Falchuk.

“Yesterday they had lunch on the beach,” a source tells PEOPLE. “The girls all wore white dresses with their initials on them.”

The group was seen by the beach in matching white wrap dresses with their initials in lowercase letters on the left side.

Gwyneth Paltrow

Paltrow later posted a scenic Instagram picture of her stay, captioning the shot “#henweekend.”

The Goop CEO arrived in the Mexican beach hotspot earlier this week with a few of her closest girlfriends in tow. A source told PEOPLE they had a schedule packed with fun outings.

“Gwyneth arrived in Cabo Wednesday with a group of girlfriends, including Stella McCartney, for her bachelorette party,” the source said. “She looked ecstatic. They have many fun activities planned, including pool time, spa and fun dinners.”

Paltrow and Falchuk announced their engagement in January after three years of dating. The couple shared their happy news with a sweet shoot on the cover of Goop Magazine’Sex & Love issue. The mother of two debuted her massive sapphire engagement ring that same month at the Producers Guild Awards.

Gwyneth Paltrow and Brad Falchuk

Paltrow previously opened up about her upcoming nuptials, saying she was excited to plan her wedding.

“I’m excited about everything!” she told PEOPLE. “I’ve never had a wedding before. So even though I’m 45, I sort of feel like a 21-year-old.”

Black Panther Has Second-Largest Second Weekend Ever

Black Panther had stellar second weekend at the domestic box office, holding strong in first place with an estimated $ 108 million.

The Chadwick Boseman-led Marvel movie had the second-largest second weekend ever, outpacing the second weekend hauls of both The Avengers and Jurassic World. Black Panther’s second weekend is only behind Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which made $ 149.2 million in 2015.

Having now grossed $ 400 million in North America, director Ryan Coogler’s record-breaking MCU film is not only the third-fastest movie to reach the milestone—reaching it in just 10 days—it’s on pace to soon eclipse Captain America: Civil War and Iron Man 3’s domestic hauls of $ 408.1 million and $ 409 million, respectively.

NBA All Star Weekend: Nike vs. Adidas

LOS ANGELES — At the second edition of ComplexCon, which took place last November in Long Beach, Calif., Nike was the fan favorite. Its programing, brand activations and storytelling was interactive and impactful. The brand hosted talks between Kendrick Lamar and Kobe Bryant and set up an area were guests could customize a pair of white Air Force 1s alongside influencers and designers. It also didn’t hurt that it was fresh from releasing and seeding its well-received The 10 collaboration with Off-White’s Virgil Abloh. Based on talks and the overall mood, there seemed to be a marked shift in brand sentiment from the first ComplexCon in 2016 where Adidas was the “winner.”
Adidas must have taken notes. For NBA All Star Weekend, which was held last weekend in Los Angeles, the company made a much larger push to align itself with basketball and the U.S. market. It set up the 747 Warehouse, which was essentially a two-day festival that featured musical performances from artists including N.E.R.D. and Lil Uzi Vert, and experiential brand spaces that brought to life its partnerships with Y-3, Parley, an organization that advocates for ocean preservation, Alexander Wang, Bape and Pharrell Williams, who designed a Human Race

Prabal Gurung Designs F1 Grid Girls Uniforms for Abu Dhabi Grand Prix Weekend

REV YOUR ENGINES: Prabal Gurung has designed the new F1 Grid Girls uniforms for the 2017 Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix weekend, that gets under way today.
The new uniform, which will be worn by Etihad Airways’ cabin crew during the three-day event, will also be seen on TV by hundreds of millions of motorsport fans worldwide.
“Etihad’s foray into fashion is truly an innovative break from tradition. Similarly, we wanted to challenge the conceived notion of how Grid Girls are typically dressed. Together, we are proud to create a jumpsuit with a strong shoulder and our signature architectural approach — something a bit unexpected, yet still feminine and empowering,” said Gurung, at a launch held at the Paddock Club at Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi.
IMG model Chanel Iman unveiled the black jumpsuit through a video model diary and photo shoot, shot on location at Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi and in front of an Etihad Airways F1-branded Airbus A380.

Thor: Ragnarok Remains Box Office Champ in 2nd Weekend

Thor: Ragnarok held strong in first place during its second weekend at the North American box office, earning an estimated $ 56.6 million.

Marvel Studios’ latest, which had the fourth-largest opening of 2017 last weekend, now has a domestic total of $ 211.6 million, eclipsing the earnings of the first Thor movie and Thor: The Dark World. Additionally, Ragnarok’s global total now stands at $ 650 million, making it the twelfth consecutive film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to soar past the $ 500 million mark in worldwide earnings.

Meanwhile, this weekend brought with it the debut of Daddy’s Home 2, which placed second with an estimated $ 30 million, and received an “A-” CinemaScore from moviegoers. The Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg-led Christmas comedy’s opening weekend didn’t quite reach the heights of the original film, which debuted in 2015 to $ 38.7 million.

Ina Garten’s New Show Airs This Weekend, And We’re So Freaking Excited

Have you heard angels singing lately? Well, that would make sense because Ina Garten’s new show, “Cook Like a Pro,” is premiering Sunday.

People email me the craziest questions all the time,” Garten told People. “So I thought, ‘Why don’t I answer these on the show?’”

The new program will be dedicated to sharing everyday kitchen tips ― like how to best cut vegetables ― and showing even the most amateur chefs how to make cooking easier.

“If somebody wants to know how you cut cauliflower so it doesn’t get all over the kitchen, well, I turn it over, cut out the core and pull the florets apart,” she said. “I really wanted to do all those little things I’ve learned professionally over the years that will make people feel like they can cook with confidence. It’s recipe-based, but it’s really much more about the tips, which are woven throughout the episode.”

Garten said her new show won’t be like “Barefoot Contessa,” which has run for 24 seasons. But it will feature some special guests, including José Andrés, Mario Batali, April Bloomfield and Yotam Ottolenghi.

There’s no word yet on whether her husband, Jeffrey, will have a prominent role ― but if we know the Barefoot Contessa, he will.

We’ll be waiting with bated breath for the first episode to air on the Food Network this Sunday at 11 a.m. Eastern Time.

‘Alien: Covenant’ Just Barely Beats ‘Guardians’ At The Weekend Box Office

LOS ANGELES (Variety.com) – As this weekend approached, the question lingered if “Alien: Covenant” would be able to unseat “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” from the top spot at the domestic box office.

Now, we have an answer. As of Sunday morning, “Covenant,” from 20th Century Fox and Scott Free Productions, looks to be the winner with a three-day estimate of $ 36 million (27.6 million pounds) from 3,761 locations. That’s just above Disney’s “Guardians” sequel which is raking in an additional $ 35.3 million from 4,347 spots. The super sequel is seeing only a 46% drop from last weekend, and its total domestic earnings now exceed $ 300 million.

While “Alien” may have won, the film’s price tag in the $ 100 million range and marketing costs detract from the victory. The sixth installment in the Alien franchise (not counting the two Alien vs. Predator films) was directed by Ridley Scott and stars Michael Fassbender, Katherine Waterston, Billy Crudup, and Danny McBride. It holds a 73% on Rotten Tomatoes, which is in line with 2012’s “Prometheus.” Although it came in already having made $ 42 million overseas and $ 36 million was enough to land in the top slot, “Alien” grossed less during its first weekend in the U.S. than “Prometheus” did in 2012 ($ 51 million). Its final domestic earnings also came in below earlier projections, which pegged the horror flick at least $ 40 million.

Fox’s president of domestic distribution Chris Aronson chalked the lower totals compared with “Prometheus” to the “normal course of business.” He added that “Alien: Covenant” gives fans of the franchise since the 1979 original the chance to share with the younger generation (60% of the opening weekend audience was in the 18-34 demo). “Teenagers likely haven’t seen ‘Alien,’” he said, “This movie creates a generational bond.”

While the “Alien” franchise is still able to generate decent interest, the same cannot be said for Fox’s other release this weekend, “Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul.” The fourth live-action movie based on Jeff Kinney’s middle school-centric book series opened to $ 7.2 million from 3,157 locations. David Bowers, who directed movies two and three, returned to the helm nearly five years after the last iteration, and anointed a new titular wimp in Jason Drucker.

The only other major release of the weekend was “Everything, Everything,” from Warner Bros. and MGM. The sick-lit adaptation will earn $ 12 million by the end of the weekend from 2,801 locations. That’s enough to land in the top three. “Hunger Games” standout Amandla Stenberg stars as a girl with an autoimmune disease that keeps her locked up indoors. Nick Robinson plays her love interest named Olly. “Everything, Everything” earned the highest CinemaScore of the new released (an A- overall). 82% of its audience was female, and 74% were under 25 years old.

“Along with our partners, MGM, we’re thrilled that we hit our key demo,” commented Jeff Goldstein, domestic distribution chief at Warner Bros.

Amy Schumer’s “Snatched,” also from Fox, will see an additional $ 7.6 million in earnings from 3,511 theaters, putting it in the fourth slot, ahead of “Wimpy Kid.” Also in its second weekend, “King Arthur: Legend of the Sword” continues to flop miserably with a weekend total of less than $ 7 million.

With Memorial Day weekend on the horizon, the overall domestic summer box office is ten percentage points lower than it was at this time last year. That means all eyes are fixed on a duo of splashy summer releases ― Disney’s “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” and Paramount’s “Baywatch” ― to hopefully make up some ground.

“The dominance at this point by Disney and Marvel’s early summer entry “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” is impressive having earned more than all the other films combined,” said Paul Degarabedian, senior media analyst at ComScore, who noted that “Captain America: Civil War” accounted for more than half of the summer take at this point last year. “However, a slow start does not portend a slow overall summer as many have predicted,” he added, “though if the ebb and flow of this season’s fortunes thus far is any indication we may have to buckle up for a pretty bumpy ride.”

‘Smurfs’ Struggles In Weekend Box Office Up Against ‘Boss Baby’

LOS ANGELES (Variety.com) – The Smurfs may be feeling kind of blue.

The cuddly creatures’ once-promising film franchise is looking awfully creaky after “Smurfs: The Lost Village” stumbled at the domestic box office this weekend. The Sony release opened to a negligible $ 14.1 million. The film was an attempt to reinvigorate the series after 2013’s “The Smurfs 2” racked up a disappointing $ 347.5 million on a hefty $ 105 million budget. It’s a fall from quite a height. The first film, 2011’s “The Smurfs,” had showed such promise, grossing $ 563.7 million globally, but interest in the big screen adventures of the creatures has waned with each sequel.

With the Smurfs failing to generate much excitement, DreamWorks Animation and Fox’s “The Boss Baby” captured first place at the North American box office for the second consecutive weekend, earning $ 26.3 million to push its domestic haul to $ 89.4 million. Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast” came in second, pulling in $ 25 million to push its stateside grosses to a lordly $ 432.3 million.

Box office analysts blame the glut of family titles for hobbling the Smurfs. “They should have waited a few weeks to open it,” said Jeff Bock, an analyst with Exhibitor Relations.

type=type=RelatedArticlesblockTitle=Related… + articlesList=58e7a3fee4b00de14102bf5d

Bock was ready to write the obituary for the franchise, saying, “A major studio does not open an animated film at $ 14 million and expect to have a sequel.”

This weekend is something of a throat clearing for the industry. “The Fate of the Furious,” the latest chapter in Universal’s long-running chronicle of vehicular carnage, is slated to roar into theaters next Friday. It should dominate ticket sales, racking up an $ 100 million debut and keeping Vin Diesel in designer tank tops for the foreseeable future.

“It’s looming large on the horizon,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at ComScore. “It’s going to be a monstrous debut.”

New Line and Village Roadshow’s “Going in Style” took fourth place with $ 12.5 million. The comedy about three retirees who rob a bank stars Morgan Freeman, Alan Arkin, and Michael Caine. It’s a low-budget remake of a 1979 comedy of the same name and cost $ 24 million to produce. The film resonated with older crowds, with 72% of the audience clocking in over the age of 50.

“The chemistry of the three guys really works together,” said Jeff Goldstein, domestic distribution chief at Warner Bros., New Line’s studio parent company. “They have fun together and it shows. It was a core part of the film’s appeal.”

Paramount’s “Ghost in the Shell” rounded out the top five, grossing $ 7.3 million to bring its domestic gross to a disastrous $ 31.6 million. The Japanese manga adaptation is shaping up to be one of the year’s biggest bombs. Dogged by “whitewashing” controversy after Scarlett Johansson nabbed a part intended for an Asian actress, “Ghost in the Shell” won’t stand a chance of recouping its $ 110 million production budget.

Sony isn’t ready to wave the white flag on the Smurfs. The studio notes that the previous two films earned more than 70% of their gross from foreign markets. The studio is also pleased with the film’s A CinemaScore, a sign that audiences are responding to the picture.

“We delivered a film that I think is the best yet,” said Rory Bruer, Sony’s domestic distribution chief. “Word-of-mouth should be strong.”

Sony also reined in costs. “Smurfs: The Lost Village” has a $ 60 million production budget, a fraction of the previous two entries’ price tag. However, the weak result extends a punishing period for Sony. The studio has been dogged by bombs such as “Life” and “Inferno,” while highly anticipated releases such as “Passengers,” a science-fiction romance with Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence, struggled to turn a profit.

In limited release, “Their Finest” opened on four screens in New York and Los Angeles to $ 77,000 for a per-screen average of $ 19,250. The comedy is set in World War II-era London and follows a troop of propaganda filmmakers. EuropaCorp bought the picture out of the Toronto Film Festival ― STX is distributing “Their Finest” on its behalf.

Neon, a new label from Alamo Drafthouse founder Tim League and indie veteran Tom Quinn, debuted “Colossal” to $ 125,809 from four theaters. The off-beat monster movie stars Anne Hathaway and enjoyed a solid $ 31,452 per-screen average.

Overall ticket sales were up more than 15% on the prior-year period. Last year at this time Melissa McCarthy’s “The Boss” topped charts with a $ 23.6 million bow. Thanks to hits such as “Beauty and the Beast” and “Logan,” 2017 continues to outpace 2016, with revenues up 5%.

Inside Julianne Hough’s Star-Studded Bachelorette Party Weekend

Julianne Hough celebrated her last single days this weekend, partying in a tropical location along with two dozen of her closest friends for her beach-themed bachelorette party.

The 28-year-old Dancing with the Stars judge had a gaggle of friends by her side — including stars Nina Dobrev, Cindy Crawford, Kris Jenner, Aaron Paul‘s wife Lauren Paul, and mom Marriann Hough.

Together they shared the fun on social media, using a dozen or so hashtags on their posts. Some favorites? “#JulesBEACHelorette,” “#BitchinB4TheHitchin, “#HastaLaVistaHough,” “#TheFinalHoughrrah,” “#TheLastFlingB4TheRing,” “#BEACHeloretteWithMyBEACHES” and the dominant tag, “#WeDontLaichHimWeLoveHim.”

Along the way, there were plenty of group activities — including a trip to the gym, a trip to the beach, and (of course) dance.

“It’s so special to experience life… the special moments with my daughter,” mom Marriann wrote.

The festivities kicked off on Thursday, where the star’s best friend Dobrev took to her Instagram Stories to share plenty of envy-inducing snaps of the tropical getaway.

Up first? A casual 15 tequila shots — and a full lineup of delicious-looking cocktails.

“We’ve arrived,” wrote Dobrev, 28. “Let the game begins …”

Dobrev also shared a video of their idyllic waterfront setup, complete with an open-air living room, deck and pool.

And of course, there’s the woman of the hour herself, celebrating in a white bikini, veil and pink “Bachelorette” sash — drink in hand, of course.

The two BFFs also posted for selfies, with the bride-to-be flashing her stunning engagement ring.

And since girl’s just wanna have fun, Hough and Dobrev gave fans a little show when they danced in an Instagram video. “Beach please. These girls DEFINITELY know how to have fun. @nina,” Hough captioned the post, adding the hashtag: “#WeDontLAICHhimWeLoveHim.”

The girls enjoyed time on the beach and at the gym on Friday, posing for group photos throughout.

In the evening, they dressed in their best for a fancy dinner — followed by some fun dancing.

Most of Saturday was spent, as most morning are spent after a night of parting, recovering with coffee.

Hough and her hockey player fiancé Brooks Laich dated for a year and a half before he popped the question in August 2015.

Last December, the Dancing with the Stars judge revealed to PEOPLE Now that Laich, 33, is hoping to show off his own dancing skills at the couple’s wedding.

“It’s so funny because he really wants to do a first dance,” she said. “I was like, ‘Of course, I’ll help you and teach you and we can do some stuff!’ “

M. Night Shyamalan’s ‘Split’ Defeats ‘Return Of Xander Cage’ At The Weekend Box Office

LOS ANGELES, Jan 22 (Variety.com) – M. Night Shyamalan’s “Split” has turned into a horror hit with a surprisingly strong $ 40.2 million in its opening weekend at 3,038 North American locations.

“Split,” starring James McAvoy as a man with 24 different personalities, performed far above recent expectations for Universal and Blumhouse. It easily topped the 2015 launch of Shyamalan’s found-footage horror movie “The Visit,” which scored an opening weekend of $ 25.4 million.

“Split” doubled Vin Diesel’s launch of “xXx: Return of Xander Cage,” which is heading for a second-place finish for Paramount with $ 20 million at 3,651 sites ― in line with recent forecasts. Fox’s historical drama “Hidden Figures” maintained its impressive performance in third with $ 16.3 million at 3,416 theaters for a domestic total of $ 84.2 million.

Michael Keaton’s biopic “The Founder” showed little traction for the Weinstein Company with a modest $ 3.8 million weekend at 1,115 locations.

Shyamalan produced and directed “Split” from his own script in which McAvoy’s multiple characters capture three young women and hold them hostage. The movie, which costs under $ 10 million, generated the fourth-highest opening for a Shyamalan title following “Signs” with $ 60 million, “The Village” with $ 50.7 million, and “The Last Airbender” with $ 40.3 million.

“Split” carries a 76% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with McAvoy’s performance receiving strong reviews. Shyamalan is self-financing the project and re-teamed with horror specialist Jason Blum and his Blumhouse Productions after collaborating on “The Visit,” which grossed nearly $ 100 million worldwide on a $ 5 million budget.

“Xander Cage” stars Diesel as a skilled government operative character who debuted in the 2002 movie “xXx.” The film also stars Samuel L. Jackson, Donnie Yen, Deepika Padukone, Ruby Rose, Kris Wu, and Nina Dobrev.

D.J. Caruso directs from a script by F. Scott Frazier, which centers on Diesel’s Xander Cage coming out of self-imposed exile in a race to recover a seemingly unstoppable weapon known as Pandora’s Box.

“Xander Cage” has an $ 85 million budget with backing from Chinese companies Huahua Media and Shanghai Film Group, which limits Paramount’s exposure to about 50%. Paramount and the two companies announced a three-year $ 1 billion co-financing deal on Thursday.

“Hidden Figures,” which won the first two weekends of 2017, held well with a 22% decline during the three days. The drama may be a major beneficiary from Tuesday’s Academy Awards nominations.

Illumination-Universal’s fifth weekend of “Sing” led the rest of the pack in fourth with $ 9 million at 3,193 locations for a 33-day take of $ 249.4 million. Lionsgate’s awards contender “La La Land” finished a close fifth with $ 8.4 million at 1,865 sites to push its total to nearly $ 90 million.

‘Moana’ Tops The Box Office For Second Weekend In A Row With $28.4 Million

LOS ANGELES (Variety.com) – “Moana” sailed to the top of the domestic box office for the second consecutive weekend. The Disney animated adventure picked up $ 28.4 million to push its stateside haul to $ 119.9 million.

Not that “Moana” faced much in the way of competition. The weekend after Thanksgiving tends to be a slow one for the movie business and this year’s edition was in keeping with that tradition. The only major new release, “Incarnate,” failed to sell many tickets, earning $ 2.6 million and falling short of its expected $ 4 million to $ 5 million opening.

“Incarnate” centers on a scientist (Aaron Eckhart) who enters the mind of an 11-year-old boy to rid him of an evil spirit. The horror film is the latest offering from BH Tilt, which is trying to contain distribution costs by orchestrating more targeted marketing campaigns for certain theatrical releases. “Incarnate” used digital advertising to try to better reach younger horror fans, and debuted on 1,700 screens, substantially fewer theaters than most studio movies unfurl across. It cost $ 5 million to produce.

“Believe,” a faith-based drama about a Christmas pageant, grossed a quiet $ 602,519 from 639 locations. Freestyle Releasing backed the film.

One bright spot was the limited release debut of Fox Searchlight’s “Jackie.” The look at First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy’s efforts to put on a funeral for John Kennedy that honored her husband and cemented the president’s legacy has earned raves for Natalie Portman’s lead performance and Oscar buzz. It also did strong business in five theaters, picking up $ 275,000 for a $ 55,000 per-screen average.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,” the Harry Potter spinoff from Warner Bros., took second place, earning $ 18.5 million to push its domestic gross to $ 183.5 million.

Paramount’s “Arrival” came in third, earning $ 7.3 million. The science-fiction thriller has made $ 73.1 million. Coming in fourth, Paramount’s “Allied” added $ 7 million to its $ 28.9 million gross. Marvel’s “Doctor Strange” rounded out the top five, picking up $ 6.5 million to bring its stateside bounty to $ 215.3 million.

Among Oscar contenders, Amazon Studios and Roadside’s “Manchester by the Sea” expanded nicely, picking up $ 2.4 million after moving from 48 to 156 screens. The acclaimed drama about a grieving janitor has made $ 4.4 million.

A24’s “Moonlight” continued to impress. The coming-of-age story made $ 915,750, pushing its gross to $ 9.9 million.

The domestic box office continues to outpace last year’s revenues, with 2016 up roughly 4% over 2015. However, the weekend totals were off 3% from the same period last year, when the horror comedy “Krampus” debuted to a strong $ 16.3 million.

The movie business continues to hold its collective breath for the opening of “Rogue One: A Star Wars” story on Dec. 16, which is expected to dominate ticket sales for the rest of the year.

“This was the drama-free weekend,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at comScore. “It’s the calm after the storm and the calm before the storm.”

‘Doctor Strange’ Takes Top Spot At The Box Office For Second Weekend In A Row

LOS ANGELES (Variety.com) – Alien invasion thriller “Arrival” capitalized on strong reviews to score an impressive debut, while Marvel’s “Doctor Strange” topped the box office for the second consecutive weekend.

The superhero adventure picked up $ 43 million to bring its domestic total to $ 153 million. DreamWorks Animation’s “Trolls,” another holdover, came in second, earning $ 35 million to bring its stateside haul to $ 94 million after two weeks of release.

“Arrival” took third, easily outpacing pre-release tracking with a debut of $ 24 million. Heading into the weekend, the film was expected to launch to $ 16 million. “Arrival” was directed by Denis Villeneuve, who has built a steady following with the likes of “Prisoners” and “Sicario.” It focuses on a linguist (Amy Adams) who is recruited to try to communicate with alien visitors. Paramount picked up domestic rights to the film for $ 20 million. FilmNation, Lava Bear and 21 Laps financed the $ 47 million production.

“Arrival’s” strong box office result is a shot in the arm for Paramount, which has weathered a string of flops such as “Zoolander 2,” “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows,” and “Ben-Hur.” The instability starts at the top. Viacom, Paramount’s corporate parent, was engulfed in an internecine war for much of the past year, as Shari Redstone, the daughter of founder Sumner Redstone, successfully worked to oust Philippe Dauman from his perch as the company’s CEO. Paramount chief Brad Grey is trying to convince Shari Redstone that he has the vision to lead the company out of its doldrums, and has pointed to films like “Arrival” as proof that the studio’s slate is improving.

Universal’s “Almost Christmas” debuted to a solid $ 15.6 million across 2,376 locations for a fourth place finish. The comedy about a dysfunctional family gathering for the holidays after their mother dies was economical to produce and carries a $ 17 million budget. It stars Danny Glover, Gabrielle Union, Kimberly Elise and Jessie Usher.

Liongate’s “Hacksaw Ridge” rounded out the top five, earning $ 10.8 million to bring the war drama’s total to $ 32.3 million.

Among the weekend’s other wide releases, EuropaCorp’s “Shut In” stumbled out of the gate, kicking off to a paltry $ 3.7 million from 2,058 locations.

Sony bowed “Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk” on two screens where it made $ 120,300. The Iraq War drama is shot at an accelerated framerate, but few theaters will be able to exhibit the film at that speed. The limited release did exhibit the picture in the immersive format that director Ang Lee has pushed theaters to incorporate. It was screened in 4K, 3D, and at 120 frames per second. “Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk” will expand next weekend on to more than 800 theaters.

In limited release, Sony Pictures Classics debuted “Elle” on two screens where it earned $ 56,012. The thriller stars Isabelle Huppert as a woman who plots revenge against the man who raped her.

Desert Trip Tickets Are $399 For the Weekend: Is It Worth the Cost?

2016-05-03-1462307724-1711500-paul_mccartney_at_desert_trip.jpg

By Laura Woods, Contributor

Desert Trip, the classic rock version of Coachella, is coming to Indio, Calif. Oct. 7-9. Organized by the people behind Coachella, many of classic rock’s biggest names are slated to perform at the event, including Paul McCartney and the Rolling Stones.

Desert Trip tickets aren’t cheap, carrying a general admission price tag of $ 399 for the weekend. Find out who’s performing and if you can afford to attend.

Visit GOBankingRates for the latest finance news and shopping deals >>>

Desert Trip Lineup

A classic rock fan’s dream come true, Desert Trip offers the chance to see some of the most iconic musical acts perform live.

Nicknamed Oldchella and Woodstock 2016, Desert Trip will feature the Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan Friday night, followed by Paul McCartney and Neil Young on Saturday. Roger Waters and The Who will close out the event Sunday.

Are Desert Trip Tickets Worth the Cost?

Weekend passes for Desert Trip are selling for the same as Coachella: $ 399. Desert Trip does offer one-day passes for $ 199, however, giving you the chance to save while seeing some of your favorite artists.

Other tiers of Desert Trip passes for the weekend include reserved floor passes, costing $ 699, $ 999 and $ 1,599. Grandstand tickets cost $ 999 and $ 1,599, and standing pit passes are going for $ 1,599.

The exorbitant cost to attend Desert Trip is likely caused by the immense performance fees paid to each of the headlining acts, which is rumored to be as much as $ 7 million each, reported entertainment news hub Ultimate Classic Rock.

Cost to Watch Paul McCartney and Others Live

If you’re only interested in seeing one or two of the acts at Desert Trip, you might be able to save money by watching your favorite artists separately.

Tickets for the Paul McCartney tour “One On One” average just $ 161.77, according to Pollstar, which tracks the cost of concert tickets. Similarly, tickets to see the Rolling Stones live have averaged $ 164.72 over the past 12 months, with tickets to see Neil Young averaging $ 70.78.

Of course, attending Desert Trip is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, so if you’re into all of the headliners and don’t mind paying top dollar to attend, the festival is sure to leave you with lasting memories. Desert Trip tickets go on sale May 9 at 10 a.m. PST at DesertTrip.com.

Who Kicked Off Coachella in Festival-Themed Underwear? See How All Your Favorite Stars Are Celebrating Weekend 1

Everyone celebrates the annual arrival of music festival season in their own unique way. While many of us are busy getting our finest fringed garments out of storage, dusting off our vast collection of fanny packs, and dyeing our hair some technicolor hue in anticipation, one celebrity festival attendee has taken Coachella-mania in an entirely new direction.

Poppy Delevingne clearly has an unparalleled passion for music, the desert, and the hippie-themed attire that naturally goes with both. So much so, she went ahead and had the name of her favorite festival embroidered across her underwear. The socialite posted a rather intimate shot to her Instagram account on Thursday night, showing off her new pair of briefs courtesy of Cheekfrills, simply captioned, “Ready.”

But perhaps this isn’t so much a testament to her love for the annual music-centric, star-studded weekend, but rather a logical extension of her days of the week underwear collection. After all, how else is she supposed to know which pairs to pack on her weekend excursion?

DNC Chair Claims Weekend Debates Are Meant To ‘Maximize’ Attention For Candidates

On the eve of the third straight Democratic presidential primary debate scheduled on a weekend, Democratic National Committee chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz defended her party’s debate schedule, saying it aimed to ”maximize” voters’ exposure to the candidates.

“I did my best to make sure, along with my staff and along with our debate partners, to come up with a schedule that we felt was going to allow for the — to maximize the opportunity for voters to see our candidates,” she told CNN’s Brian Stelter Sunday.

The Florida congresswoman has come under fire from members of her party for scheduling several debates on weekends, when fewer voters are likely to tune in. Critics, including candidates Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley, have argued that the schedule gives front-runner Hillary Clinton an advantage.

Sunday’s debate in Charleston, South Carolina, the last time the three Democrats will face off before the Iowa caucuses on Feb. 1, will air at 9 p.m. ET, following an NFL playoff game and preceding Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, a federal holiday.

The last two Democratic debates were both held on Saturday evenings. In general, they have attracted significantly fewer viewers than the GOP debates.

Questioned by Stelter on Sunday, Wasserman Schultz claimed the disparity was due to the size of the GOP field.

She also argued that having more debates would “take away” voters’ chances to see the candidates in person at campaign events, even though Democrats will only have six debates in total. Meanwhile, Republicans are holding twice as many primary debates and have one more showdown scheduled before Iowa.

Citing the debate schedule, as well as her handling of other aspects of the Democratic primary, several progressive organizations have recently called on Wasserman Schultz to resign.

One such group, CREDO Action, posted a petition last week alleging that she has “pursued her own agenda at the expense of the progressive base and basic principles of fairness.”

“As DNC chair, you have repeatedly failed to act in the best interests of progressives and the Democratic Party,” the group wrote. ”You have lost the trust of grassroots progressives and Democrats. Please resign immediately.”

Uniqlo and Lemaire Have a Winning Weekend Launch

Already committed to making the Uniqlo and Lemaire collaboration more than a one-season wonder, Uniqlo has added production runs for fall in advance of holiday sales.
Lines formed outside Uniqlo’s three Manhattan stores for Friday morning’s launch and some stores sold out of select items by lunchtime, according to Justin Kerr, director of merchandising. There were also lines intermittently throughout the weekend as stock was replenished, and a velvet rope was set up in the SoHo store to keep everyone orderly.
“It was our best example of how high the demand was. With this launch, we put up a special landing page 30 days before. It received such a strong reception from so many different people. We were really excited to see so much engagement before the collaboration started. That carried through to the online sales,” Kerr said. “We launched it at midnight on Thursday, and by 8 a.m. Friday there were very exciting results even in those eight hours when everyone was presumably sleeping. Some must have missed some sleep to order Lemaire.”
Knitwear and outerwear were the strongest categories, with a $ 170 cashmere blended robe coat and a $ 70 cashmere blend square sweater being two bestsellers. An assortment of the 31-piece

Weekend Roundup: Connecting Minds Across Cultures

“Forty years of crisscrossing the planet has led me to suspect that the world isn’t growing smaller,” the inveterate traveler and literary journalist Pico Iyer laments. “If anything, the differences, the distances between us, are growing greater than they’ve ever been. In the Age of Information, many of us know less about other perspectives and other cultures than ever before.”

This week, the Berggruen Institute announced the launch of a philosophy and culture center that responds to this rift by connecting minds across borders through an exchange of scholars from East and West that will be hosted at prestigious universities from Cambridge and Harvard to Stanford and Tsinghua in Beijing. In order to promote foundational concepts for the future, the center will co-sponsor an ideas contest with the Aspen Institute as well as establish an annual $ 1 million Nobel-like prize for philosophy.

Behind this unique endeavor is the notion that what is least material most endures. Power wanes, buildings crumble and people die. But ideas, paradigms, worldviews and narratives live on. They shape the world by cultivating the soul, organizing the intellect and animating the will.

In our exponential technology series this week, neuroengineer Miguel Nicolelis tells us that “the brain is not a mechanism” but “an organism” that evolves. He worries that “if we keep relying so much on computers, we will begin to resemble our machines.” In our “Following Francis” series, Sébastien Maillard recounts from Rome how the pope went to a local shop himself to buy — and pay for — new lenses for his old glasses.

The saga of refugees trying to reach safe harbor in Europe continues. Rami, a 17-year-old refugee from Damascus, recounts his “escape to Germany” and the hurdles he faced along the way in Macedonia and Serbia. Mary D’Ambrosio humanizes the refugee influx with profiles of four individuals. Jonathan Portes says immigration can be good for economic growth in Europe if people are meaningfully integrated. From Munich, Sebastian Christ scores the new German policy this week of border controls as “voodoo politics” aimed at shoring up right-wing constituencies. Writing from Berlin, Alex Gorlach — a child of Turkish immigrants to Germany half a century ago — hopes the mistakes of integrating that Muslim population will not be repeated. Writing from Paris, Rokhaya Diallo calls on French leaders to live up to their rhetoric of universal human rights. Daniel Wordsworth, president and CEO of the American Refugee Committee, reminds us there are still 7.6 million refugees within Syria. In an interview, Oxford’s Alexander Betts spells out what we can learn from previous refugee crises in history.

World Reporter Nick Robins-Early reminds us of the brutal violence in Syria that is causing so many to flee their homeland, debunks the 5 major myths of Europe’s refugee and migrant crisis and describes a unique startup by three Columbia University graduates that connects Arabic learners with Syrian refugees.

In a series of photo essays, we look at the images Christopher Furlong has taken of what is left behind as refugees move on with their journey; World Reporter Charlotte Alfred presents unsettling images of the Hungarian border emptied of refugees and, in another report, we show satellite views of the impact of Hungary’s border crackdown. Christoph Asche of HuffPost Germany reports on the mounting crisis on the Serbia-Croatia border where refugees have now moved. Margarita Mavromichalis shows the “human face of refugees” on the streets of Athens.

Willa Frej stakes out the positions of the U.S. presidential candidates on the refugee crisis. Writing from Moscow, Georgy Bovt asks whether Vladimir Putin is seeking to exchange Syria for the Donbass region of Ukraine as his new international focus.

In an interview, former Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou worries that the large inflow of refugees combined with austerity policies will bolster the political fortunes of xenophobic parties like the Golden Dawn in this weekend’s election. European parliamentarian Gianni Pittella expresses the same worries. In another interview, To Potami leader Stavros Theodorakis says he hopes to be “the third pole” that can balance Greek politics. Writing from Istanbul, Behlul Ozkan sees a similar peril in Turkey as President Erdogan plays the Kurdish card to win nationalist votes in the upcoming election.

Writing from Tehran, Reyhaneh Tabatabaie describes the hopeful mood of the middle class in anticipation of the removal of economic sanctions. Seyed Hossein Mousavian, a former top Iranian official, calls on Republicans in the U.S. Congress to finally abandon militarism for diplomacy. Faysal Itani sees worrying signs of Iranian influence in Syria.

Sonia Maria Dias examines the vulnerable lives of women waste pickers in the developing world. Environmental scientist Johan Rockstrom describes how “Arctic tipping points” as a result of climate change will have ripple effects around the world. Bianca Jagger tells President Obama that he can’t both preserve the Arctic while allowing Shell to drill for oil there. Lydia O’Connor reports on a key summit of Chinese and U.S. mayors, governors and provincial leaders who met in Los Angeles to “tackle climate change from the bottom up.”

WorldPost China Correspondent Matt Sheehan reports on what 300,000 Chinese students studying in the U.S. are reading — the digital “College Daily” that combines hard news and lifestyle advice.

In this week’s “Forgotten Fact” we examine why the recent coup in Burkina Faso is a disaster for Africa.

Fusion this week look at the 10 cities in the U.S. where it’s especially difficult to scrape by on minimum wage. Finally, in our Singularity series, we look at the open source upside of “biohackers” and DIY amateur sciences.

Henry Holland Designs London Fashion Weekend T-Shirts

TEE TIME: House of Holland designer Henry Holland has designed a collection of T-shirts to mark this season’s London Fashion Weekend, a consumer event run by the British Fashion Council.
The three T-shirts come in designs inspired by Holland’s past collections: a psychedelic floral pattern; a clashing check and a black T emblazoned with the slogan “Fashion Werk,” all priced at 35 pounds, or $ 54. The T-shirts will be sold at London Fashion Weekend, which runs Sept. 24 through 27 at London’s Saatchi Gallery, and for a limited period before the event, when visitors buy tickets online.
House of Holland will also stage a runway show for the label’s fall collection during the event on Sept. 26, and model Daisy Lowe will interview Holland about his career. The biannual, ticketed event is made up of runway shows, designer talks, trend presentations and shopping galleries.

From Taylor Swift to Mariah Carey, Swimsuits Celebs Wore to Party This Weekend

This weekend saw stars all over the country getting their party on in cute swimsuits and bikinis, all in the name of independence. Celebrating the 4th of July doesn’t require water access, but the celebs who chose to hang poolside or oceanfront made sure their swim style was on-point.

Taylor Swift hung with her squad in another high-waisted bikini, confirming Saturday Night Live was right: this is indeed her most signature T-Swift style (spot her third from the left). The suit is from ASOS and on sale now.

It looked to be a full weekend of fun at T-Swift’s place, meaning Gigi Hadid had time for a suit change from the two-piece we saw her rocking in that group shot. The super got sporty in a classic red one-piece that gave off Farrah Fawcett vibes.

12 Summer Weekend Outfit Ideas for People Who Don’t Wear Shorts

For many of us, shorts are a summer wardrobe staple. For others, they’re the absolute worst.

So if you fall into the latter camp that shuns cutoffs and the like, fret not. There are tons of terrific casual summer outfits that you can rock from this weekend through Labor Day. Here are 12 non-shorts summer outfit ideas that can even convince the most die-hard shorts aficionado to trade in her favorite culottes:

t-shirt-dress-with-love-from-kat-2

Try a T-shirt dress with espadrilles. Add some shape to the silhouette by tying a button-down shirt around your waist or adding a belt.

shirtdress-bishop-holland-5

Shirt dresses may read work outfit, but there are great options that are easy and breezy, like this eyelet style. Add bold accessories to punch it up.

slipdress-hello-fashion

Summer is pretty much the only time you can get away with a slip dress during the day. Pair yours with gladiator sandals to toughen up the sweet look.

off-the-shoulder-dress-fit-fab-mom

Off-the-shoulder tops and dresses are a great way to show some skin without baring too much. Pair yours with flat mules and a fun fedora!

matches-set-style-me-grasie-9

Choose a matched skirt and top set in a bold print. Top with a denim jacket on chillier days.

midi-song-of-style

An off-the-shoulder top looks great with a midi skirt and strappy sandals.

chambray-eyelet-pair-and-a-spare-8

Grab your tried-and-true chambray shirt and knot it at the waist with a fit-and-flare skirt.

denim-mini-blonde-salad

Speaking of denim, who needs jean cutoffs when you’ve got a denim mini? Team yours up with a denim tank or even a basic white T-shirt.

breezy-pants-fashion-me-now-3

If shorts aren’t your thing, a pair of gauzy palazzo pants are a great staple. Throw on a basic tank and flat slides and you’re good to go!

bold-maxi-glam-files-3

Make a statement in a bold-color maxidress. Wear it with flat gold or silver sandals for day or night.

cropped-overalls-we-wore-what-36

Cropped overalls give you that denim shorts feel without going all the way.

jumpsuit-something-navy-7

And the easiest outfit possible: the jumpsuit. Grab one in black or white and you’ll be set from day to date!

Now that your outfits are ready, let’s focus on getting amazing summer skin:

Taylor Swift And Calvin Harris’ July 4th Weekend Photos Make Sparks Fly

The sparks flying between Taylor Swift and Calvin Harris might be all the fireworks you need this weekend.

The couple started Fourth of July celebrations early, partying it up with friends on Friday. Showing everyone was getting in the holiday spirit, Swift shared an adorable photo of her getting a piggyback ride from Harris with the caption, “Friendly relations between Scotland and America”:

Friendly relations between Scotland and America. @calvinharris

A photo posted by Taylor Swift (@taylorswift) on

Harris also joined in on the fun, posting a cute pic of Swift showing off her grilling skills:

She cooks too

A photo posted by Calvin Harris (@calvinharris) on

Gigi Hadid, the ladies of Haim, Victoria’s Secret model Martha Hunt and “Empire” star Serayah were just a few of the gal pals who joined Swift at the party. At one point, they lifted off into the air with red and blue towels, which seems so patriotic that squad jumps should probably replace the national anthem at the start of baseball games:

Happy 4th from me, @gigihadid, @marhunt, @britmaack, @serayah and @haimtheband 🙂

Then they just chilled out in the water because being that patriotic is hard work:

Swan squad.

Hadid even shared a photo with the caption, “star spangled blondies.”

Swift has been all over the place lately, from rocking the stage at her 1989 tour to even taking boat rides with Harris and Joe Jonas, but the singer still makes sure she has time for her squad.

7 Outfits That Will Inspire You to Wear a White T-Shirt This Weekend

As basic as it may look, a white T-shirt has some genius properties. You can modify it at the drop of the dime, match it with pretty much everything, and use it to turn up or dial down an outfit. If you’re in search of inspiration for white T-shirt outfit ideas, look no further than the following seven women.

A white tee is a cool complement to a dressy diaphanous skirt. Amp up the monochromatic look with a pile of bangles and bright heels.

Play with proportions: A longer top, short-shorts, and ankle-length vest make for an interesting combination.

A simple white shirt ensures printed pants are the focus of your outfit. Add dimension to the look with cool accessories like a furry clutch, pendant necklace, and cateye sunglasses.

Knot the hemline of your shirt to create an on-the-go crop top.

Big Slick: Celebs gather in Kansas City to focus on family, charity this Father’s Day weekend

Back in 2010 I called two friends from my hometown of Overland Park, Kansas with an idea for a charity poker tournament. The friends were Paul Rudd and Jason Sudeikis, and the goal was to have fun with our family and friends while raising $ 50K or so for Children’s Mercy Hospital. It took nine weeks to plan. I named the event Big Slick, and celebrated as year one exceeded expectations both in regard to total money raised and the generosity of all those involved – including friends like Will Ferrell, Adam McKay, George Wendt and Will Forte who flew in for the cause.

This weekend marks the 6th annual Big Slick Celebrity Weekend fundraiser. It’s also Father’s Day. And while the holiday overlap wasn’t intentional, it beautifully highlights everything Big Slick has grown to be about over the past five years. The event has increased in size, awareness, donations and celebrity attendance, but it still remains all about family: those families impacted by childhood illness and seeking care from the incredible doctors and team at Children’s Mercy; as well as my own family – and those of fellow co-hosts Paul Rudd, Jason Sudeikis, David Koechner and Eric Stonestreet – who volunteer countless hours to make Big Slick and the more than $ 2.2MM it’s raised (a record $ 1MM in 2014) possible.

Throughout the months leading up to Big Slick, it really is a familial effort that makes it all happen. My sister Julie and brother-in-law Mark are on the organization board along with Paul’s mother and sister, Jason’s mom, David’s sister, Eric’s sister… not to mention volunteer committees full of countless childhood and college friends. It’s an annual family reunion of sorts that keeps us connected to our roots, introduces new friends to a city that we love, rallies the entire region around charity and continually humbles and inspires us – all while having fun.

The fun of Big Slick weekend includes a variety of fundraising events ranging from celebrity vs. celebrity softball on the field at Royals’ Kaufman Stadium to song and dance numbers and high-ticket auction items. However, the best part of the weekend is always away from the crowds. It’s the hours spent in the halls at Children’s Mercy. Those moments in the hospital are also what brings us, all the volunteers and our celebrity friends – most of whom have no personal connection to Kansas City or the Midwest – back to support Big Slick year after year. Once you meet the children and their parents, hear their stories, meet the nurses and staff… there’s no denying that it’s worth taking the weekend to help these individuals – even if it means being away from your own kids on Father’s Day in order to support these fathers.

There’s an incredible documentary called Inside Pediatrics that was filmed at Children’s Mercy last year, narrated by Paul Rudd and including a glimpse of Big Slick weekend. Whether you’re familiar with the Kansas City area or not, it’s a moving look at the current work being done in child medicine and the challenges faced by our neighbors impacted by illness. It’s what inspires me. This Father’s Day or any day – whether in your hometown or current town – I encourage you to find what inspires you to act. Making a difference could start with something as simple as an idea and phone call. To learn more about Big Slick, visit BigSlickKC.org or Crowdrise.com/BigSlick.
