Steve Kerr’s Joke About DeMarcus Cousins Won’t Sit Well With Rest Of NBA

As the old saying goes, the rich get richer. The Golden State Warriors have embodied that notion and then some this summer. Mere weeks after winning their third NBA championship in four seasons, the Warriors somehow managed to upgrade as DeMarcus Cousins agreed to join Golden State on a one-year deal. While taking in summer league action in Las Vegas over the weekend, Warriors coach Steve Kerr couldn’t help but joke about his team adding yet another superstar. The Warriors already had an embarrassment of riches, and the addition of Cousins makes the two-time defending champions flat-out ridiculous. Then again, titles aren’t won on paper, so we’ll have to wait and see if the new-look Dubs live

OAKLAND – Warriors forward Draymond Green has never been one to hold back a rebuttal. ‘Transformers 5’ Endures Franchise Low As Indies Perform Well At The Box Office

LOS ANGELES (Variety.com) – It seems the “Transformers” franchise is rusty.

As of Sunday morning, “Transformers: The Last Knight,” the fifth installment directed by Michael Bay, looks to bring in $ 69.1 million from 4,069 domestic locations during its five-day opening weekend. That’s a franchise low for the sequel from Paramount and Hasbro, behind the first in the modern series, which earned $ 70.5 million in 2007. “The Last Knight” carries an estimated $ 217 million production budget.

This makes “Transformers: The Last Knight” the latest summer blockbuster to bank on overseas ticket sales to have a shot at turning a profit. In China, the big-budget action sequel made $ 41 million in its opening day alone. The projected international come through Sunday is $ 196.2 million, powered by $ 123.4 million in China.

“The Last Knight” comes at a time when Paramount could have used an all-around hit, following recent misses “Baywatch” and “Ghost in the Shell.” While the latest “Transformers” movie has been advertised as “the final chapter” and Bay’s last go-around, the franchise will continue ― Paramount has at least two more movies slated, including a spinoff that could star Hailee Steinfeld. The franchise has historically been massively profitable and seen solid multiples for the studio. Together, the first four earned over $ 1.3 billion domestically and well over $ 3.5 billion worldwide.

The latest take on the series centers on an alliance between Bumblebee, Cade Yeager ― who Mark Wahlberg also played in 2014′s “Age of Extinction” ― and roles played by franchise newcomers Anthony Hopkins and Laura Haddock. Together, the team works together to save the world. Audiences have earned the film a B+ CinemaScore, while critics have mostly dismissed it ― it currently holds a 15% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

“The Last Knight” was uncontested at the box office this weekend, but a few indie releases showed traction. Sofia Coppola’s “The Beguiled” remake from Focus Features played at four theaters this weekend, and should gross $ 240,545 with a strong per screen average before it expands to over 500 locations next weekend.

“We’re thrilled by this opening,” said Lisa Bunnell, Focus Features’ distribution president. “This is Focus’ third collaboration with Sofia and she’s created an entertaining, atmospheric thriller featuring strong female representation in front of and behind the camera.”

And Kumail Nanjiani’s critically adored romantic comedy “The Big Sick” should earn $ 435,000 during its opening weekend in five locations ― that would give the Lionsgate and Amazon Studios release the highest per screen average of any film that has opened this year so far.

“Kumail and Emily’s true story provided audiences of all ages a much-needed alternative to the summer blockbusters,” said Bob Berney, Amazon Studios’ distribution chief.

Otherwise, “Wonder Woman” continues to post impressive numbers, and holds onto second place during its fourth weekend in theaters. This weekend, it should earn an additional $ 25.2 million, bringing its domestic total to $ 318.4 million. Earlier this week, the film became the highest-grossing live-action movie to be directed by a woman ― a major distinction for Patty Jenkins.

Disney and Pixar’s “Cars 3” also looks to earn $ 25.2 million domestically during its second weekend. Some estimates have the film slightly lower, just below $ 25 million. The family film, which won last weekend’s box office, is expected to pass the $ 100 million mark in North America by Monday.

“Transformers: The Last Knight’s” performance is a tough break for the summer box office’s bottom line domestically. For the past two years, this weekend has seen monster grosses for “Jurassic World” and “Finding Dory.” Now, attention is turned toward a trio of releases next weekend, as the box office hopes for a shot in the arm from “Despicable Me 3,” “Baby Driver,” and “The House.”

Trump’s Comments About Women Pair Frighteningly Well With Sexist Old Ads

Surprise, surprise: Many of President Donald Trump’s comments about women pair quite well with sexist vintage advertisements.

A new project by Syrian artist Saint Hoax reimagines some of Trump’s thoughts about women as slogans on old print advertisements. The series, titled “Make America Misogynistic Again,” highlights how easy it would be to confuse the president’s thoughts about women with sexist commentary from more than half a century ago.

Saint Hoax said he was initially doing research for a different project, when he stumbled upon vintage sexist advertisements and was inspired to create “Make America Misogynistic Again.”

“I decided to match the visuals with sexist Trump quotes and show them to my friends without actually telling them where I got the quotes from,” he told The Huffington Post. “I told them that these were the actual advertisements that were published in the 1950s and ‘60s and they believed it. When I revealed the truth, they were in complete shock.”

There should be a stark contrast between sexist ads from 70 ago and our current president’s comments, but there isn’t. Trump’s now-infamous remarks about grabbing women “by the pussy,” and how “you have to treat [women] like shit” pair alarmingly well with ads that depict a husband spanking his wife, or a woman as an actual rug with a man standing on top of her.

“The way women are represented in the media has shifted drastically since these advertisements were initially published,” Saint Hoax said. “Sadly, Donald Trump is trying to take America back to the ‘Mad Men’ era. I’m hoping that these posters would make people realize that Trump’s ‘locker room talk’ is extremely dangerous.”

Scroll below to see all of the prints from Saint Hoax’s “Make America Misogynistic Again.”

Someday We’ll All Be Free

“Hang on to the world as it spins around/Just don’t let the spin get you down/Things are moving fast/Hold on tight and you will last … “
-Donny Hathaway Someday We’ll All Be Free

Chloe Long no longer desired to live. She filled her slender hands with a legion of pills, cupped them together, and then stared down longingly at the tiny capsules cradled by her ten fragile digits. In that moment, her clasped hands seemed like the only portion of her life still together.

“Stop, go, stop, go,” said her inner monologue. “Stop,” commanded the part of her clinging to a measure of hope. “Go,” demanded the part of her longing for the finality she sought, beckoning her to enter the other side. Both seemed so tempting. “Stop, go … ” In a moment of desperation, she swallowed them all, and slowly felt herself slipping away.

Chloe did not die. She survived her ill-fated attempt to take her own life. We learn of her desire to bring about her demise, and her protracted battle with substance abuse precipitating it, because she conquered her inner demons and mustered the courage to tell her story on her magnificent song Stop, Go. In Chloe’s particular instance, an embittered argument with her mother, where Chloe recalls saying many regrettable things, served as the catalyst to her desire to end her despair suddenly. In her moments of anguish, she felt unfit to live. She has since learned she is not alone.

In September of 2014, the World Health Organization released a report entitled Health for the World’s Adolescents: A Second Chance in the Second Decade, which found the number one cause of death for teenage girls between fifteen and nineteen was suicide. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also recently reported that “the number of suicides in the United States has been on the rise since 1999 in everyone between the ages of 10 and 74”. Chloe found herself in the number of those wanting to end their own life, yet she also found beauty arising from her ugliest moments.

Some where between Norah Jones’ melancholy melodies, Sara McLachlan’s emotive rifts, and Beth Gibbons of Portishead’s enveloping, yet ethereal harmonies, you will find Chloe’s spell-binding voice singing her mesmerizing tune Stop, Go. As Chloe invites the listener into her most intimate inner turmoil, the audience is left reeling at the power of her voice. There she sits, humming, “stop, go,” compelling all who hear to sit and listen to her.

One will be astounded to learn that Chloe is only seventeen, and Stop, Go appears on a project released by her high school. Yet both are true. Simply put, Chloe sings with passion and introspection well beyond her years. A further listen reveals that “The Paragon Vol. 1: Someday We’ll All Be Free,” the project housing Stop, Go,,is no ordinary project, and Chloe and her colleagues are not ordinary teenagers.

2016-04-26-1461684435-7308030-forthayes.jpg

Chloe attends The Fort Hayes Metropolitan Education Center, a magnet high school within the Columbus City Schools District, located a stone’s throw from downtown Columbus, Ohio. Fort Hayes, which has ten buildings sprawling across its seventy-seven acre campus, presents an array of opportunity for its students, many of whom might not find such chances within a city like Columbus–a metropolitan fusion of industries: government, technology, private business, that surprisingly leaves a significant portion of its population under-resourced. With its on-campus career center, which offers vocational training, in addition to its rigorous college preparatory curriculum, that features an intensive academic and arts curriculum, Fort Hayes is a bright spot in the shadow of Columbus’ burgeoning growth and towering wit.

Fort Hayes, under the leadership of its principal Dr. Milton Ruffin, and its assistant principal Dr. Anthony Anderson, have endeavored to leverage Fort Hayes’ innovative curriculum and gifted student body to offer its students another meaningful opportunity–the chance to express themselves to the world. The outgrowth of that endeavor is The Paragon Vol. 1: Someday We’ll All Be Free.” In many ways, it is a perfect example of Fort Hayes’ innovation, incorporating its Graphic Design Department, its Photography Department, its Video Production and Audio Production Department, and its Visual and Performing Arts Department.

2016-04-26-1461686067-3140912-img_0088.jpg

The project arose from Dr. Anderson’s desire to share his experience working under the tutelage of the late great Richard Nichols (former manager of The Roots) in addition to his success developing and managing Bassline, a group of Wilmington teens he managed and produced while earning his doctorate in education from the University of Delaware. He approached his Dr. Ruffin, an accomplished musician in his own right, who immediately showed unbridled support for the project. The title’s allusion to the late Donny Hathaway’s song of the same name stems from the two’s mutual love for soul music, and its potential to impact people on and off stage. Upon receiving the support of Dr. Ruffin, Dr. Anderson approached his frequent collaborator Giscard Xavier (p.k.a Jee-Eye-Zee also p.k.a GIZ), a GRAMMY nominated producer, who received his GRAMMY nomination for his production efforts on Wyclef Jean’s protege’s City High’s hit record Caramel. Dr. Anderson asked Mr. Xavier if he was interested in assisting in producing the album. He quickly agreed. Dr. Anderson then solicited help from Brandon “B-Jazz” Scott, a former Fort Hayes student who has worked the likes of Eric Roberson, Liquid Crystal Project, et al. Once he had sufficient support in production and administration, Dr. Anderson began assembling students to create original works. The students began working feverishly.

In describing the recording process, he said, “The students were like machine’s, I mean at night Giz and I would work on the production of the songs and then we set a recording schedule with the students for after school, and they would come in and knock them out. A lot of the records were written in the sessions believe it or not.” The bulk of the album was conceived, written, and recorded in ten days. He further added, “[T]here is a big misconception out there that young people don’t want to hear music that is intellectually stimulating. This project has shown me, this couldn’t be further from the truth. They love trap beats, they also have love for soul music, but they really are yearning for content.” Indeed, The Paragron is drenching with a depth of content and richness of sound. There are masterly reworkings of classic works (Four Women, The Revolution Will Not Be Televised) and splendid original works (Stop, Go, I Matter, I Wanna Live). In that way, The Paragon is emblematic of inter-generational conversations between students and teachers that explore issues that extend well beyond the borders of Columbus.

Dr. Anderson describes it like this, “[These students] are dealing with issues that are sometimes difficult to communicate … These records enable us to gain insight from their perspective in an authentic way in a language, music, [in which] they communicate.” indeed, The Paragon wrestles with compelling topics: fatherlessness, police brutality (I Wanna Live), depression (Stop, Go), youth violence (Sky’s the Limit), along with the quest for identity and validation (I Matter).

The Paragon Vol. 1: Someday We’ll All Be Free,” is a terrific album riddled with insightful social commentary and moving, introspective musings. It is timely, relevant, and gripping. It is also almost entirely executed by teenagers wrestling with wisdom well beyond their years. Whitney Houston once sang, “[T]he children are the future.” With The Paragon, the future is now.”

Film Review: The Impossible Is, Well, Not Quite Yet Possible

2015-07-22-1437577369-8537887-sx70.jpg

Polaroid has always been a bit of a legend and a bit of a mystery to me. I grew up in the 80s, so Polaroid was pop culture, although less and less so as I came of age. By the time I became a “photographer” Polaroids were no longer really in use, even though the Polaroid Corporation continued to make various films into the late 2000s. Finally, by 2008 or so, it had completely vanished.

Enter the Impossible Project, a Dutch company that bought the old Polaroid factory along with their patents etc. Soon Polaroid film – and therefore Polaroid cameras – would be up and working again. However, not all would be the same.

Given my lifelong curiosity with Polaroid cameras, I recently decided to dive in. I contacted the good people at The Impossible Project and we hashed out a deal for them to sponsor a project. Soon after they sent me a really nice refurbished SX-70 along with a hefty supply of film. Thanks be to The Impossible Project and their wonderful employees!

I really wanted to like their film. I really wanted to fall in love with the SX-70, one of the most romantic cameras of all time. I imagined myself roaming the streets of New York, SX-70 slung over my shoulder, making some of my greatest photographs to date. Alas, none of this would come to pass.

Here’s the short version of the story: Impossible film is just not stable enough (yet!) to be really useful. I hate to say it, but that seems to be the truth of the matter.

I tried the SX-70 indoors with ample light, but to no avail. Here’s Matthew in a failed attempt at a brightly lit portrait.

2015-07-22-1437578429-9801140-PolaroidBW3.jpeg

Next, I tried the B&W film outdoors. Better success. Here’s Granamyr’s claw. But things were still difficult. Sunlight and heat would be major obstacles to overcome in New York in July. The film doesn’t like weather that is too hot, or too cold. It also doesn’t like too much light in those first few seconds after exposure.

2015-07-22-1437578465-9981971-PolaroidBW1.jpeg

I installed the frog tongue, after a lot of frustration (poor directions, no visuals), and things again improved some. Here are a few more attempts at outdoor photography with color and black and white film.

2015-07-22-1437578586-5309220-Polaroid5.jpeg

In this next shot, the brick wall was a vibrant yellow. As you can see the film did not pick up the color well at all. In the following shot, a red and white wall is similarly washed out, although the photo is my favorite of all of them. It’s artsy and abstract and fun! This is perhaps were the gem lies in Impossible film – in the experimentation and fun.

2015-07-22-1437578774-4260075-polaroid3.jpeg

2015-07-22-1437578799-9227198-Polaroid1.jpeg

This next image shows the lack of detail in the image, despite having the focus sharp at the time of capture.

2015-07-22-1437578902-7962715-PolaroidBW4.jpeg

The Impossible Project has been around for some time now. I think it is safe to say the “novelty” of it all has worn away. People still using this film are likely genuinely interested in instant film and not merely the “idea” of it. Having said this, this is where we are now with getting the Polaroid image back into pop culture. We kinda, sorta, more or less have it, but not quite. The images are just not we used to know as a “Polaroid photograph”. In their defense, the team at Impossible tells me that Holland (where their factory is located) has restricted the use of many chemicals on environmental grounds. This is great for the environment, but poor for the film quality. Yet, at least they are trying to get things going again and still remain environmentally friendly. Fujifilm Instax film on the other hand is likely using much more harmful chemicals to achieve their superior results. This is all worth noting, as is the general observation that analog film, in general terms, is not all that congruent with environmental movements.

In the end, I have to say there is indeed something magical about using a Polaroid camera, about the SX-70 especially. The decisive clunk of the shutter button, the whirl of the gears and the spitting out of a real piece of photographic history. It’s all very exciting. The disappointment comes in terms of the quality of the image. The film just doesn’t resolve enough detail to really be useful for serious photography and, at just over $ 3 a shot, it’s an expensive hobby. Despite this, The Impossible Project says they sold over 1 million packs of film last year and things are on the rise. They also tell me that there is a new generation of film being beta tested as I write this post. That’s exciting because I would really like to see the Impossible become, well, more possible. The very real and wonderful people behind this project are trying to do a good thing for photography, but they may have a steep hill yet to climb. Regardless, I’m not giving up on the SX-70 or The Impossible Project just yet.

2015-07-22-1437579006-6040604-Polaroid7.jpeg

Bottom Line: I can wholeheartedly recommend Impossible film for personal fun and/or experimental use, but cannot recommend it (at this time) for anything serious or professional. It’s a mixed bag verdict.

All Well Yet

All Well Yet

Over 40 letters, written between 1915 1918 from both France and Italy, reproduced as they were written, from the hell of the trenches to tucking into a delightful, although unexpected meal on Christmas Day these are some of the most colourful, graphic and moving accounts of a soldier’s life during World War 1.All Well YetIt is impossible to describe the no mans land’, it’s the greyness of it, the actual want of colour, the endless succession of holes and mounds, shattered timbers sticking up from mud, endless abandoned trenches, rows of trees halved, or stripped into poles, the extraordinary amount of abandoned equipment bombs, rifles, clothing, and the dead amongst it all, quiet, not repulsive, fitting into the drab scene, sometimes German sometimes English. In twos or threes as they were killed, or one by himself, lonely even in this lonely place. The pools of water in the shell holes are green or red, and over the endless stumps and twisted broken wires rises the sour smell of battlefield. The Lewis guns having the time of their lives, and crying, their voices lost in the din of the shells and the savage yells of our men half mad with blood over the ruins of house and orchard, a machine gun, manned to the last, holds up the line, the bombers swing round it, rifle grenades add to the din and it stops. Then the objective, furious digging, rushing up and down, stores up, guns in position, and then comparative quiet. When the smoke clears away, the bright sunlight reveals every sordid detail of a mechanical war. Stores lie in every direction, everything broken, and every here and there a man, twisted into dreadful attitudes, but with quiet faces they lie where they fell, the dust veiling the wounds, finished with it all. All Well Yet’ – compiled by Timothy James Brown(Grandson of William Neilson Brown)

8 Movie Scores We’ll Still Listen To In 2015

For people who love movie scores — these are real people, we assure you — last year was a peak time. From Steven Price’s Oscar-winning “Gravity” score to smaller ones from Joel P. West (“Short Term 12”) and Graham Reynolds (“Before Midnight”), 2013’s movie scores had a cue for every mood.

Not so this year. The most memorable moments in “Wild,” “Boyhood,” “Whiplash,” “Obvious Child,” “Selma,” “Guardians of the Galaxy,” “The Fault in Our Stars,” “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” “The LEGO Movie,” “The Interview” and “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1,” to name a few, came accompanied with either an existing track or original song (everything is awesome, you crazy “LEGO Movie”). Which is great for people who also love movie soundtracks — guilty! — but less so for score fans. Sure, Antonio Sanchez’s “Birdman” score is fantastic within the framework of the film, but would anyone want to listen to it during a random Tuesday commute?

With that in mind, here are the eight movie scores released this year that profile as having longevity — aka each will have a permanent home on our HuffPost Entertainment Spotify playlist of movie scores.

Alexandre Desplat, “Godzilla”

No one had a better year than Alexandre Desplat, who wrote three of the year’s most memorable scores (and also the ones for “The Monuments Men” and “Unbroken”). His “Godzilla” theme was so damn loud that even the title has an exclamation mark. Let them fight.

Alexandre Desplat, “The Imitation Game”

Desplat’s score for “The Imitation Game” isn’t necessarily deep, but the main theme is as Oscar-friendly as the film itself. It’s the type of track you’d expect to hear play as Benedict Cumberbatch walks up to accept his Academy Award.

Alexandre Desplat, “The Grand Budapest Hotel”

There’s that news van again. Desplat’s score for Wes Anderson’s latest film is gave millennials their very own “Third Man” theme.

Hans Zimmer, “Interstellar”

Hans Zimmer’s “Interstellar” score was no “Inception” (or even “Rush” or “Man of Steel”), but it was haunting and big. If we ever fall into a wormhole, this is what we’ll be thinking about.

Johann Johannsson, “The Theory of Everything”

Similar to “The Imitation Game,” Johann Johannsson’s score for “The Theory of Everything” feels expressly written to win Oscars. But who cares when the theme is as beautiful as this?

Alex Ebert, “A Most Violent Year”

Alex Ebert, he of Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros fame, wrote 1981’s best John Carpenter score.

Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, “Gone Girl”

The year’s best onscreen moment? We’ll take the Cool Girl montage in “Gone Girl” over many other worthy contenders for one reason alone: this above track, written by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross.

Jonny Greenwood, “Inherent Vice”

Working with Paul Thomas Anderson again after “There Will Be Blood” and “The Master,” Jonny Greenwood’s noir-y “Inherent Vice” score sounds like something Bernard Herrmann would like. But then it’s also beautiful and wistful. The above track, “Amethyst,” which plays during the film’s sweetest scene, being a prime example of its power.

BONUS: Nick Thorburn, “Serial”

It wasn’t a movie, but in addition to being one of the year’s most satisfying stories, “Serial” had the most infectious theme. Sorry, Desplat.

Lovingkindness For Yourself as Well

“I do not trust people who don’t love themselves and yet tell me, ‘I love you.’ There is an African saying which is: Be careful when a naked person offers you a shirt.”

Maya Angelou

In classical Buddhist teaching, the practice of lovingkindness begins with extending love and compassion to yourself. With an idea of spirituality as self-denial, self-judgment or even self mortification — this seems awfully strange. It certainly seemed strange to me.

I went to Burma in 1985 to do an extended retreat in lovingkindness meditation, a practice specifically designed to open our heart and strengthen our sense of connection to all of life. It is a meditation practice that enables us to dissolve the rigid sense of “self” and “other” and “us” and “them” that can keep us feeling so isolated, so cut off, and so afraid. Another way of saying lovingkindness is friendship; the practice is one of cultivating friendship towards yourself and ultimately all beings everywhere.

I knew the classical unfolding of the practice: after lovingkindness towards yourself you offer lovingkindness to someone who has helped you, or a benefactor, then a friend, a neutral person and a difficult person. The difficult person is the doorway to lovingkindness for all beings.

Each part of that structure made some sense to me, though I knew different parts would likely be challenging or unappealing. It was lovingkindness for myself that seemed more like a pro-forma ritual to be gotten through quickly. Hah!

The invitation in this meditation practice isn’t to be narcissistic or self centered, which we can and certainly often do manage without the time and effort of meditation. Rather, it is building and renewing the reservoir of feeling whole within, feeling complete, so that we can offer and give and serve without feeling depleted, overcome or burned out.

The goal is also not to undertake lovingkindness for yourself as some kind of strategic project, refusing to consider others before you “finish” having lovingkindness for yourself. There are many people who care for others in a disproportionate way, leaving themselves out. The goal here is a kind of balance. As we explore this balance, we are also exploring skills of resilience.

It’s not just that we need to be careful of naked people offering us their shirts because we will be disappointed. Those naked people will often be wanting to do the generous, caring thing, but find themselves despairing because they know they just don’t have what it takes to make a sustained effort to make a difference. There is hollowness on both sides, giving and receiving.

In Burma I started my three-month retreat with the reflection, right from the Buddha’s teaching, “All beings want to be happy.” The idea is that our urge for happiness isn’t a problem, something to feel squeamish about, or to confuse with greed. Our basic problem is ignorance about where true happiness is to be found. It is because of this ignorance that we engage in actions that can cause so much pain for ourselves and for others. But the wish for happiness in itself is rightful, appropriate. When it can be combined with wisdom instead of with ignorance, that wish becomes like a homing instinct for freedom. We can cut through many obstacles, overcome many fears when we realize it’s alright to want to be happy.

And just as we ourselves want to be happy, all beings want to be happy. We all want a sense of belonging, a feeling of being a part of something greater than our limited sense of self, a home in this body, in this mind, in this life. We all want to be happy. In a way, we all deserve to be happy. That includes you. And as I came to learn, that includes me.

The Sexiest Lithuanian Yogi Bride And Groom We’ll Feature Today

Hang on. Lina and Mindaugas had such a sexily gorgeous wedding in Kaunas, Lithuania, that I’m still fanning myself. The couple own a yoga studio together, so let’s start with how hot that is. Then let’s examine the bad-assery of getting matching wedding-ring tattoos. Next, let’s take into consideration how stunning the two-part ceremony was: Lina and Mindaugas exchanged vows both outdoors at the confluence of the Nemunas and Neris rivers and inside a Gothic church. St. George’s Church is still undergoing restoration (building is OLD, y’all), but you’d never be able to tell from these airy, light-filled photos.

Surrealism Is Alive And Well In Roberto Gil de Montes’ Dreamy Depictions

Roberto Gil de Montes’ paintings exist in a hazy terrain somewhere between Mexico and Los Angeles, art history and folklore, a memory and a dream.

His works are tapestries of life as it exists around us and as it lives in our minds, weaved together into two-dimensional fields. His colors are as buttery and sharp as morning, rendered with the soft edges of a legend partly forgotten. “Hecho en México,” a new series of neo-surrealist artworks, are the perfect antidote to gallery trends and their clever emptiness.

“I paint as a way of discovering stories hidden within myself, peeling away layers, digging deeper each time, revealing images of forgotten stories,” Gil de Montes says in the gallery statement. Gazing upon his artworks feels like traveling through time, unearthing Pre-Columbian symbols and painted allusions without a singular guide to navigate the journey.

Rather than merely depicting the world, Gil de Montes invites viewers to physically experience it,” the L.A. Times wrote in 1996. “His painting’s stark, jarring contrasts and highly animated patterns stimulate your retinas, causing your body to respond well before your brain has a chance to intervene.”

In his works you’ll recognize reincarnations of Paul Gauguin’s “Spirit of the Dead Watching” and Henri Rousseau’s “The Sleeping Gypsy.” Yet scroll further and you’ll see a delicate rendering of a shirtless selfie of two men entitled “Facebook Photo.” Despite the thematic leap from mythical badlands to social media uploads, the sense of mystical possibility lingers. The electric potential lies in every colored mark, each one drawing the viewer deeper into a vibrant land where enchanted tigers and computer screens can coexist.

“Hecho en México” runs from April 5 until May 10 at Lora Schlesinger Gallery in Los Angeles. See a preview of the work below.

This Married Couple Knows Each Other A Little Too Well (PHOTO)

After 32 years of marriage, couples are bound to start thinking alike.

This couple certainly is. A redditor posted this photo Monday with the caption, “My parents got each other the same Valentine’s Day card by accident.”

The long-married spouses were 240 miles apart at the time the cards were bought, the Redditor explained, so they didn’t buy them at the same store.

At least they can agree who the “fartsy” spouse is!

Miley Cyrus Dancing To Britney Spears Is The New Taylor Swift Dancing To, Well, Everything

We’ve all come to know and resent love Taylor Swift’s quirky, off-beat dance moves at every awards show and concert she attends. But who would have thought Miley Cyrus would become the New Taylor Swift?

A crop top wearing Cyrus was spotted first row at Britney Spears’ first Las Vegas show yesterday (Dec. 27), and boy, did she know all the words. The video above was later released, showing the 21-year-old lip syncing and dancing her famous booty off to “Till The World Ends.”

After her performance, Spears — who collaborated with Miley on “SMS (Bangerz)” — tweeted the twerk-star:

We’re T-minus 2 hours away from this taking over the internet.
