White Boy Rick Review

When White Boy Rick works, it is a beautiful and heartfelt drama about family and the injustice of the legal system when it comes to the war on drugs, featuring stunning performances by both established actors and a promising newcomer. But the second half of the film loses itself and rushes through the most interesting aspects of the story.

You may be forgiven for thinking Yann Demange’s sophomore feature was going to be like Scarface. It’s got everything you would want out of a crime film – an underdog in a bad family situation who suddenly becomes successful by selling crack cocaine at age 15. Yet White Boy Rick has more in common with Spring Breakers than Scarface. This is a film about the optimism of a family who is convinced hard work will make anyone achieve the American Dream, and how that family can endure the hardships of the ’80s drug epidemic.

First Lady Melania Trump Wears Valentino for White House Visit With Spain’s King Felipe and Queen Letizia

MEET THE TRUMPS: Spain’s King Felipe and Queen Letizia capped off their six-day, three-city U.S. tour Tuesday with a White House visit.
The U.S. First Lady welcomed her Spanish counterpart to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue wearing an olive green and light beige Valentino cotton dress embroidered with white leaf motifs. With Tuesday afternoon’s humidity hovering around 90 percent in the Beltway, Queen Letizia also opted for a sleeveless stretch boucle Michael Kors dress, albeit hers was in a flamingo pink with a thin metallic belt and a $ 1,695 price tag.
While both King Felipe and President Trump stuck with dark suits, light-colored button-down shirts and striped blue ties for the Oval Office meet-and-greet, FLOTUS switched up her heels for a change. Still devoted to Manolo Blahnik, Melania Trump paired her frock with olive green pumps with a stacked dark brown heel. She and Queen Letizia were expected to have tea, while their husbands hashed out talks about trade and tariffs. In the past two weeks, the First Lady has taken a noticeably more public role with official duties, following her much-scrutinized 25-day absence that began with a kidney operation.
The White House stop is the grand finale for the royals, who arrived in the

Following what is expected to be a morning arrival at the Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Alaska, the First Lady plans to participate in a Month of Military celebration. Afterwards, she is expected to return to Washington, D.C., while the President continues his trip to Vietnam and the Philippines in keeping with their plans. Grammar Launches Capsule Collection of White Shirts

Grammar, a new capsule collection of organic cotton women’s shirt styles, isn’t playing by the fashion rules.
The collection will be available for pre-order on Kickstarter starting Sept. 5, and then will be sold exclusively on Grammarnyc.com, beginning in November.
The shirts, which have names such as The Verb, The Preposition, The Dangling Modifier, The Conjunction and The Split Infinitive, are made by hand in New York’s Garment Center and are available in sizes 0 to 12. Orders placed early in the Kickstarter campaign will receive a discount (15 percent off the purchase of one shirt, 20 percent off the purchase of two to four shirts, and 25 percent off if all five styles are purchased) from the planned $ 150 to $ 250 retail price points. Orders will be shipped to customers eight weeks after the Kickstarter funding.
According to Althea Simons, founder and chief executive officer of Grammar, “Not a lot of fashion people use Kickstarter. I’m using it to collect pre-orders so I don’t have as much inventory risk. I needed to raise money to produce, and I’d rather have it come from pre-orders.”

CNN Trolls The White House By Sending Sketch Artist To Press Briefing

On Thursday, going back on years of tradition, the White House announced that they would not allow audio or video recording during the day’s press briefing. They later changed their minds and agreed to allow audio recordings only, inexplicably.

Today, CNN pretty hilariously trolled the White House by sending their Supreme Court sketch artist Bill Hennessy to the press room to capture the scene.

It’s really paints a wonderful picture, doesn’t it? You can almost see Press Secretary Sean Spicer’s fumble his way through another Trump tweet storm.

Michelle Obama Recalls Fashion Double Standard at the White House: ‘Barack Wore the Same Tuxedo for Eight Years!’

Before Barack Obama‘s post-presidency leather jacket, there was his tuxedo jacket. And he liked it so much, he wore it all eight years of his presidency.

Former First Lady Michelle Obama revealed this tidbit during an appearance at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference on Tuesday, noting that while the dresses and accessories she wore for state dinners were meticulously photographed and scrutinized, her husband got away with wearing the same outfit year in and year out.

“This is the unfair thing — you talk about Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers — no matter what we do, he puts on that same tux,” she said.

“Now, people take pictures of the shoes I wear, the bracelets, the necklace — they didn’t comment that for eight years he wore the same tux, same shoes.”

“And he was proud of it too,” she continued. “He’s like, ‘Mmm, I’m ready. I’m ready in 10 minutes. How long did it take you?’ I’m like, ‘Get out of here.’ ”

The former first lady also shared the story behind the photo of her adjusting her husband’s bow tie just before they welcomed Chinese President Xi Jinping and wife Peng Liyuan to the White House during a state visit in September 2015.

WATCH THIS: People at the White House: The Final Interview with The Obamas

While waiting to greet their guests at the North Portico of the White House, the Obamas were photographed by “about 100 press people,” the former first lady recalls.

“So we’re standing there waiting for the cars to roll in … and I was bored,” she admits. “So I sort of thought, let me make sure my husband looks good.”

Tyler Perry On Hollywood And Race: ‘I Don’t Think It’s Black And White, It’s Green’

Tyler Perry isn’t one to hold back about his thoughts on race.

When asked in this week’s issue of The Hollywood Reporter if Hollywood has respect for the African-American viewing audience, Perry said he thinks Hollywood tends to focus more on money than race.

“Listen, let me tell you something about what I know about Hollywood,” Perry, who was named TV Producer of the Year by the magazine, said. “I don’t think it’s black and white, I think it’s green. It’s just about, Where’s the money? How do we make the money? How do we make the business grow? It’s all about the money. So whatever’s making the money is where the respect is going to be.”

Perry, who is currently producing an original series for TLC (“Too Close to Home”), as well as five original shows for the OWN network (“The Haves and the Have Nots,” “If Loving You Is Wrong,” “Love Thy Neighbor,” “For Better or Worse,” “The Paynes”), named Bill Cosby and Oprah Winfrey as his industry role models because “we had the same color skin.”

Even though he’s openly talked about race in the movie industry before, he’s also previously said that he’s not the ideal person to discuss race in film during a 2015 Producers Guild of America panel.

“I’m not the person to ask about racism in this town, coming from where I came from I never had to go through what I’ve heard a lot of people had to go through in this town,” he said, according to Deadline. “I got into this town and I didn’t understand it.”

Rescue ‘Single White Male’ Cat Who Lived at Shelter Over 400 Days Is Hired as Receptionist, Then Finally Adopted

Champas is handsome with big, soulful eyes and a striking white coat, but he is also a bit shy at first.

This last trait was keeping him from getting noticed by potential adopters. While other cats would strut out to meet families coming through Animal Welfare League NSW, Champas stayed to the back of his cage, avoiding attention, reports Metro.

But the Australian shelter knew the feline, who had been at the rescue since December 2015, had a personality that anyone could love. Hoping to show it off, the staff decided to give the shy guy a job working at the front desk of the shelter as a receptionist.

At his post, Champas was able to greet everyone coming into the shelter, while still getting his own space. To become more available to all the cat moms and dads out there, the kitty started posing with signs describing all his winning attributes.

This little grass roots kitty campaign worked! Soon after moving into the office, Champas found a forever home with a man named Nathan.

The Casting Of A White Actor As Native Hawaiian Hero Cuts Deeper Than You Think

Prominent filmmakers by now have whitewashed so many roles meant for people of color that the internet doesn’t have time to put down its digital torches and pitchforks from one film outrage before the next one goes viral.

But the latest case of cultural appropriation wades into a painful part of American history and targets a very small minority that has been struggling for decades to understand its place within the U.S.: Native Hawaiians.

When it was announced on Tuesday that Zach McGowan ― a white actor who has starred in TV hits including “Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.” and “Shameless” ― was cast in the role of real-life Native Hawaiian hero Benehakaka Kanahele in the WWII-era drama “Niʻihau,” people online, Hawaiians especially, responded with anger.

Their ire was a familiar refrain: Why must a white actor play a role meant for a person of color ― again? The announcement reminded many people of Emma Stone’s controversial casting as a part Native Hawaiian and Chinese woman in Cameron Crowe’s “Aloha.”

“In movies and television, you get everyone except us ― everyone but us portraying us,” Anne Keala Kelly, a Native Hawaiian filmmaker, told HuffPost. “It’s a total exploitation of an actual historical event about an actual Hawaiian person.”

Kelly says this issue cuts deep for Native Hawaiians who are still reeling from the illegal overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom led by a group of American businessmen in 1893 ― a controversial event that opened the door for the Hawaiian islands’ annexation and eventual statehood in 1959.

Kelly published a documentary about these events in her 2008 film, “Noho Hewa.”

During Hawaii’s annexation and eventual path to statehood, there was an increase in Western presence in the islands that nearly wiped out Native Hawaiian culture: Hawaiian language was banned in schools, Western-owned plantations dominated the lands and, eventually, military presence increased dramatically and tourism skyrocketed.

The casting of a white man in Kanahele’s place is salt in a wound for Hawaiians who have been left feeling erased by Western influence. Kelly called it “Poly-face” ― a version of the phrase “blackface,” but directed at the indigenous people the film “Ni’ihau” portrays: Polynesians.

“It’s cultural cannibalism, it’s like someone eating you while you’re alive,” Kelly told HuffPost. “They’re erasing me, or any Hawaiian, as we’re standing here. It’s the narrative equivalent of ethnic cleansing. We’re being marginalized while we’re still here.”

Gabriel Robertson, the director of “Ni’ihau” did not respond to HuffPost’s request for comment.

It’s cultural cannibalism. They’re erasing me, or any Hawaiian, as we’re standing here.
Anne Keala Kelly

Whitewashing and cultural appropriation aside, critics also say the political timing of “Ni’ihau” puts Hawaii residents ― both native and transplants ― in a dangerous situation at a time when tensions between North Korea and the U.S. have spiked under the Trump administration.

According to early reports, the film retells the true story of a Japanese pilot who crash-landed on Ni’ihau (a private Hawaiian island where tourism is famously banned to protect the native population) during the attacks on Pearl Harbor. The surviving pilot convinced two of the island’s residents of Japanese descent to defect against the U.S. The pilot and the defectors took Kanahele and his wife hostage, but were eventually killed after the Hawaiian couple fought back against their captors.

The U.S. Army awarded Kanahele, who was shot three times during the struggle, with the Medal for Merit and the Purple Heart for his heroic actions.

Ku’ualoha Ho’omanawanui, a professor of Hawaiian literature at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, believes that recounting this story now could stoke anti-Asian fears and provoke more tension between the U.S. and North Korea.

The film “is particularly problematic in an age of Trumpian political warmongering with North Korea, with Hawaii as a potential nuclear target, and a potential ground zero for nuclear annihilation, especially if China gets involved,” he told HuffPost.

Indeed, North Korea has ramped up its nuclear program in an attempt to develop technology advanced enough to deliver a strike that could reach the U.S. And while most experts believe Hawaii faces no immediate threat from the Hermit Kingdom, military officials in the Pacific have renewed their focus on protecting the islands from a potential strike.

Ho’omanawanui said of the film, “This kind of careless, insensitive decision-making ― including the casting [decision] ― does not consider the real-world impacts on Native Hawaiians, Hawaii residents, and other peoples of color when we are not made visible as real people with a full range of human experiences and emotions.”

“Rather we are characters for white people to try on and mimic in their quest to fulfill their own ignorant, arrogant, incorrect fantasies about Native Hawaiians and other peoples of color.”

Both Kelly and Ho’omanawanui are convinced that the film, which has already received mainstream attention, will once again show the masses a Westernized version of their native culture ― and they’re upset that non-Hawaiian people have taken control of a heroic narrative that belongs to a Native Hawaiian.

“There is no reason Native Hawaiians or other people of color shouldn’t be cast in this film,” Ho’omanawanui said. “Moreover, there is no reason they shouldn’t be included as writers, directors, producers and crew, and there’s equally no reason white people need to take the lead in telling this or any other story.”

As a filmmaker, Kelly thinks the only way to solve Hollywood’s problem with cultural appropriation is for prominent filmmakers and producers to first realize there is a problem. But as big-budget films that whitewash roles for minorities continue to roll out, it’s clear some filmmakers are not learning.

“It’s impossible to bridge a gap if the people in power pretend [that there is no problem] or deny that a gap exists,” she told HuffPost.

Kelly says she believes the average American audience would care about true Native Hawaiian narratives if native filmmakers were given a chance to represent their own people.

“The tough part is that most people would give a damn. Most people would care if they heard the truth. Most people do care about justice,” she said. “But they’re being entertained into not caring about it.”

And if Hollywood’s powers-that-be still aren’t convinced that the modern movie-watching audience is craving more authenticity in stories about people of color, the backlash trailing “Ni’ihau” should be proof enough.

23 Brilliant Lines From Netflix’s “Dear White People”

“Dear White People,” the new Netflix series based on the film of the same name, has become one of the most talked about new shows this year.

The series, created by Justin Simien, takes a humorous and unflinching look at racial politics by following the lives of several black students at a fictional and predominantly white Ivy League school.

The show has sparked some interesting conversations about issues like blackface, interracial dating, colorism, and police brutality, to name a few. All of these issues are brought forth through amazingly witty, sharp, and perceptive writing, making for some of the best one-liners on any screen in years. Below, we’ve compiled some of the funniest, most poignant, perceptive and downright brilliant lines from the show’s first season. Check it out (spoiler alert):

1. SAM: Dear white people, here’s a little tip: When you ask someone who looks ethnically different ‘what are you?’ the answer is usually a person about to slap the shit out of you.” (Ep. 1)

2. JOELLE: You’re not Rashida Jones biracial, you’re Tracee Ellis Ross biracial ― people think of you as black! (Ep. 1)

3. NARRATOR: Ah, the racially insensitive party. A mainstay of primarily white institutions since time immemorial. A chance for the white majority to celebrate marginalized communities by reinforcing the very stereotypes that oppress them. (Ep. 2)

4. SAM: I like my men like I like my coffee ― full-bodied and preferably with Kenyan origins. (Ep. 4)

5. COCO: Dear white people, having a black vibrator does not count as an interracial relationship. (Ep. 4)

6. SAM: Equal? You could only vote if you owned land and didn’t have a vagina. (Ep. 5)

7. JOELLE: Sometimes being carefree and black is an act of revolution. (Ep. 5)

8. REGGIE: I plan on marrying me a dark-skinned sister; have the ashiest black babies possible. (Ep. 5)

9. SAM:  Dear white people, our skin color is not a weapon. You don’t have to be afraid of it.  (Ep. 6)

10. COCO: As soon as you double down on your blackness, they will double down on their bullshit… Who cares if you’re woke or not if you’re dead? (Ep. 6)

11. REGGIE: Gun in my face, your hate misplace, light-skinned, white skin but for me not the right skin. (Ep. 6)

12. REGGIE: Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. For some of us maybe. There’s nothing self-evident about it. (Ep. 6)

13. SAM: The whole movement is about pain. That’s why we’re out in these streets. (Ep. 6)

14. SAM: We’re going to bring together every marginalized group on this campus and demand a protest! (Ep. 7)

15. COCO: I like him black, actually black as hell and unapologetic about it. (Ep. 7)

16. NARRATOR: If only the real world had a block button. (Ep. 8)

17. TROY: So you didn’t have a man around to show you what’s what?

LIONEL: Yup. Which is why I chose to be gay… kidding. That’s not how it works. (Ep. 8)

18. NEIKA: You’re here to show that not all black students want to burn this place down. You’re props. (Ep. 9)

19. SAM: Troy’s got you drinking his Kool-Aid… or his daddy’s Kool-Aid. But guess what? I ain’t thirsty, girl. (Ep. 9)

20. COCO: I’m smarter than you. I’m more ambitious than you. Thirty years from now when I am the second black female president, all you’ll be able to do is think about me and I won’t remember your name. (Ep. 9)

21. SAM: Have you been to a Winchester townhall? They’re so regimented even Kim Jung Un’s like ‘guys, chill, let somebody talk.’ (Ep. 10)

22. SAM: So because I call it out, racism is my fault?!

23. KURT: The truth is, you like things to be fucked up so you can have a machine to rage against, Sharpton.

SAM: None of this is a threat to you because you already have the power,            Kurt. Can’t you see that? (Ep. 10)

SHOPPING NEWS UPDATE:

White House Correspondents Dinner Goes On, Without Donald Trump

An annual Washington tradition best known for celebrity guests and a comedy routine by the president continues on Saturday with neither.

The White House Correspondents Association dinner, at the Washington Hilton in D.C.’s Dupont Circle neighborhood, will be held without President Donald Trump and the high-profile guests typically invited by news outlets that organize the event. Instead, this year’s dinner will include guests like the high-school journalists who brought down their principal with a story on her faked credentials. (The kids will be guests of HuffPost.)

Trump announced he was skipping the dinner in February, making him the first president in more than three decades to break the tradition. At the time, Trump and his administration were fiercely attacking reporters and media outlets. He described the media as “the enemy of the American people,” threatened to change libel laws so he can more easily sue news organizations, attacked the media for using unnamed sources in stories critical of his administration, and blocked certain outlets, including HuffPost, from attendance at press briefings.

Saturday’s correspondents dinner will still feature a roast of the president, delivered by “The Daily Show” correspondent Hasan Minhaj, a Muslim comedian who has condemned Trump’s anti-Muslim actions. It’s a safe bet that there will be plenty of jabs at the president’s expense.

Still, this year’s correspondents dinner will be a diminished affair compared with past years. Much of the star power typically drawn to the dinner will instead be concentrated at an alternative event thrown by “Full Frontal” host Samantha Bee. The New Yorker and Vanity Fair have canceled the extravagant after-parties they typically hold. And Trump is holding a rally at the same time as the dinner, presumably to divert attention from the Washington event.

Jeff Mason, president of the White House Correspondents Association, said this year’s dinner would focus on its original purpose: funding scholarships for aspiring journalists and recognizing the work of reporters covering the presidency.

“We look forward to shining a spotlight at the dinner on some of the best political journalism of the past year and recognizing the promising students who represent the next generation of our profession,” Mason said in a statement.

Given Trump’s anti-media attacks, the dinner also is likely to focus on freedom of the press and the media’s watchdog role in government.

White House Insists Melania Trump Isn’t Miserable Married To Donald

From the Trumps’ strained interactions during the inauguration to their awkward body language in photographs, much has been speculated about their 12-year marriage ― everyone from etiquette experts to the Twitterverse has chimed in (just look at the hashtag #FreeMelania). Is this really what Melania signed up for?

Recent reports, including a piece in Vanity Fair titled “Inside the Trump Marriage: Melania’s Burden,” have suggested that the first lady is less than happy. But those close to her, including Melania’s spokeswoman Stephanie Grisham, have squashed the notion.

“Mrs. Trump is a loving wife and mother who has always put her family first and that will not change,” Grisham told HuffPost, calling the VF piece a “false story.” “She is an independent woman who believes in our country, and continues her plans to serve as First Lady with integrity and dedication.”

Vanity Fair’s story, which appears online and in the magazine’s May 2017 issue, focuses on how the former model ― who met her billionaire husband at a party during New York City’s Fashion Week back in 1998 ― is dealing with the public scrutiny that comes with her first lady title. It includes claims from mostly unnamed sources that their union may not necessarily be a romance for the ages.

Grisham plays a large role in the piece, denying all rumors of trouble in paradise. Some of the questions addressed include:

Does Melania actually plan to move to D.C. to be with her husband?

The White House has said that Melania will move to Washington at the end of the school year, but Vanity Fair notes that the Trumps have not announced which D.C.-area school Barron will be attending, and perhaps haven’t even applied. “There’s been no ‘Barron will be going to my school’” gossip, a parent at prep school St. Albans told the magazine.

According to Grisham, “they are still looking at a few schools.”

Was President Trump rude during Melania’s pregnancy?

An unnamed source claims President Trump ― who already had four children at the time ― allegedly only agreed to have a baby with Melania on the condition that she’d get her body back.

“She promised him that everything would go back to the way it was,” an unnamed visitor to one of the Trump residences told the magazine. “There was no, ‘How do you feel?’ No opening of doors, making sure she didn’t fall. Just ‘You wanted to have a baby. ”

Grisham countered that the president was “very warm and supportive throughout her pregnancy.”

Does Melania not want to be First Lady?

“She never wanted this, and never had any interest,” another unnamed source told Vanity Fair. But Grisham says, “Mrs. Trump has always been supportive of all her husband’s endeavors.”

Does Melania have an icy relationship with her stepdaughter Ivanka?

Vanity Fair cites two anonymous sources in fashion and media who claim that Melania and Ivanka don’t have the best relationship, but Grisham claims the two are “fine.”

“Ivanka and Mrs. Trump have always shared a close relationship, and that continues today,” she said.

In an e-mail to HuffPost, Grisham said that Vanity Fair’s story is “offensive.”

“Vanity Fair chose to publish not only a false story, but one that is degrading to women. When you consider it is a magazine that is tailored to women, it becomes even more offensive,” she said.

In Two Words and One Photo, Former Obama White House Photographer Schools Sarah Palin, Kid Rock and Ted Nugent on Respect

Another day, another lesson in subtle shade-throwing from former Obama White House photographer Pete Souza.

On Thursday, Souza — who has regularly used his Instagram account to compare and contrast the Trump and Obama administrations — took aim at a buzzed-about new photo of Trump supporters Sarah PalinKid Rock and Ted Nugent posing mockingly in front of a portrait of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton during their Wednesday evening visit to the White House.

In an apparent clapback, Souza posted a throwback photo of former President Barack Obama and his White House Chief of Staff Bill Daley sitting solemnly beneath a portrait of Republican icon and former President Ronald Reagan.

“Being respectful,” Souza captioned the snapshot.

Though the photographer didn’t mention Palin, Nugent or Kid Rock in his post, his followers were quick to pick up on the signature Souza shade.

“Oh God, the juxtaposition of this photo with the photo of Sarah Palin, Ted Nugent and Kid Rock sums up the sorry state of our country,” wrote one of Souza’s followers.

“You are the best, most low-key, delightful troll ever,” applauded another commenter.

RELATED VIDEO: Watch: Natasha Stoynoff Breaks Silence, Accuses Donald Trump of Sexual Attack

This isn’t the first time Souza has trolled President Donald Trump on Instagram. In the months since Trump’s inauguration, Souza has posted several photos of Obama and his team that, when juxtaposed with of-the-moment news about the Trump administration, offer subtle critiques of the new president.

In February, for example, Souza highlighted the lack of female leadership in Trump’s White House by sharing a photo of Obama meeting in the Oval Office with three top advisers, all of whom were women. “This is a full-frame picture,” Souza captioned. “I guess you’d say I was trying to make a point.”

Many others on social media also criticized Palin, Nugent and Kid Rock’s photo. Here’s what some people are saying:

Wrote The New York Times‘ Maggie Haberman: “Doesn’t matter what the political party is, it’s the White House, not a rally, and it’s an official portrait, not a cardboard cutout.”

DVF Calls Tucker Carlson A ‘White Man With A Small Penis’

NEW YORK ― On the last day of Tina Brown’s Women in the World Summit, fashion designer and activist Diane von Furstenberg did not hold back when giving her opinion about Fox News pundit Tucker Carlson.

During the event’s “Designing Disruption” panel, which also featured “Black-ish” actress Tracee Ellis Ross and Teen Vogue editor Elaine Welteroth, Von Furstenberg responded to the February news clip that featured Teen Vogue writer Lauren Duca defending her piece, “Donald Trump is Gaslighting America,” to Carlson.

As Duca defended writing a political op-ed for a magazine with a teenage girl audience, Carlson snapped at the time: “You should stick to thigh-high boots. You’re better at that.”

Von Furstenberg’s response?

“It’s only the vengeance of the white man with a small penis.”

Carlson’s tone-deaf comments to Duca must have struck a nerve for von Furstenberg, a certified badass whose parents survived the Holocaust, and who has spent her entire adult life as both a fashion designer and activist ― something Carlson, apparently, doesn’t think is possible.

This Is What Trump’s White House Correspondents Dinner Would Look Like

Donald Trump will be the first president in 36 years to be absent at the White House Correspondents Association dinner ― an annual tradition where media figures, politicians and celebrities schmooze for a night.

And while he and his staff likely turned down their invitations because of the president’s deep hatred for the media and so-called “fake news,” the folks over at “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” have figured out how to get Trump to attend: Invite the Russians.

What would that dinner look like? In Trump’s mind (or “The Late Show’s” version of Trump’s mind), it would probably include a Russian man like “Boris Yacanovich” riffing on journalists.

It would feature jokes like:

A journalist criticized the administration. And he was shot dead in the street. In broad daylight.

And other knee-slappers, including:

Another journalist expressed dissent. And he was dropped out of window. Kaboom.

Fingers crossed that the actual WHCA dinner never ends up looking like this.

‘I (Heart) Trucks’ Day at the White House: President Trump Blows a Horn and a New Meme Is Born

President Donald Trump was still truckin’ on Thursday, despite the House moving to delay a vote on his health care bill.

The president spent the afternoon at the White House meeting with executives in the trucking industry, in a visit that has already captured the Internet’s attention.

Photos and footage from the meet-up show Trump, 70, playing in one of the semi trucks parked on the South Lawn of the White House. After posing for photos, honking the horn and pretending to drive away, the president made some remarks while wearing an “I (heart) trucks” button pin — much to the delight of Twitter.

Here are some reactions:

Some people just knew it was a meme in the making.

And at least one commenter is predicting the moment will get the SNL treatment this weekend.

“Can’t wait to see what SNL does with Trump’s Truck pin,” wrote the Twitter user.

Why ‘Shots Fired’ Made An Unarmed White Student The Victim Of A Police Shooting

Filmmakers Gina Prince-Bythewood and Reggie Rock Bythewood are aiming to uncover the complexities of America’s criminal justice system with their new Fox drama series “Shots Fired.”

Starring Sanaa Lathan, Tristan “Mack” Wilds, Stephan James, Helen Hunt and Aisha Hinds, the 10-episode series chronicles the aftermath of two racially charged shootings in a small North Carolina town following African American police officer Joshua Beck (played by Wilds) killing an unarmed white college student.

The decision by the husband-wife team to reverse the narrative of police brutality came during the early stages of the show’s development, according to Prince-Bythewood.

The “Love & Basketball” director tells The Huffington Post that the story was inspired by George Zimmerman’s much-publicized 2013 trial in the shooting death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, in which the former neighborhood watch coordinator received over $ 200,000 from supporters to help fund his legal defense.

“What struck us after the Zimmerman trial was how they kept reporting on how much money was being donated to George Zimmerman,” she said. “And it was a shock that so much of the population was empathizing with him and not the 17-year-old boy who was killed for absolutely no reason. And it shocked us, but not everyone was seeing that. And the fact that when these shootings happen, it seems like the first thing that happens is that people start to demonize the victim and make excuses for what happened.”

“So we felt if we flipped it, it would give people who normally don’t deal with this an opportunity to feel what it’s like to be in our shoes, so to speak,” she continued. “And hopefully empathize and understand so that when it happens you’re not desensitized anymore.”

The show’s recurring themes of race and social justice also delve into the related economic effects of federal private prisons and America’s school-to-prison pipeline.

Through the years, privately owned prison facilities have faced scrutiny over safety and security, especially in comparison to federally run prisons.

Various reports have concluded that students of color face harsher disciplinary action and are more likely to be pushed out of school than their white counterparts ― all of which contributes to America’s increasing mass incarceration rates and the disproportionate number of black and Latino prisoners.

“We don’t think people understand and know about the pipeline and what private prisons do and how they make money and how corrupt it is and how it absolutely affects policing,” Prince-Bythewood said. “That was one of the things that we wanted to do with the show is be able to open it up and show this issue from every seat in the house, not just the victims and the families and the police, but how it rises up into the politics and how laws are made and why they’re made to benefit people in power.”

“All of this affects the people on the ground. The private prison complex is a horrifying thing,” she added. “And also what happens in our schools and the equity in schools can absolutely affect a child’s chance of living life.”

In addition to her hope for the show’s characters to spark more activism in America, the 47-year-old filmmaker also wants politicians and law enforcement officials to take note of the show’s underlying messages to help create a more unified America.

“We hope that we give a blueprint,” she said. “Our show isn’t just ten hours of venting, but hopefully at the end of the ten hours we’re offering some thoughts on how things can change.”

“Shots Fired” airs Wednesdays at 8/7c on Fox.
