Dale Earnhardt Jr. Hits Back at Rumors His Wife Pushed for His Retirement: ‘Not Once’

Dale Earnhardt Jr. wants to make one thing clear: His wife Amy did not play a role in his decision to retire.

In the former NASCAR driver’s brand-new book, Racing to the Finish: My Story, Earnhardt Jr., 44, says that Amy — who he married in a New Year’s Eve 2016 wedding — wasn’t the reason he ended his career in 2017.

“As my time out of the racecar was extended, and as rumors about my retirement started getting louder, a lot of people spoke up. They had a very hard time dealing with it all,” Earnhardt Jr. writes of both fans and people in his inner circle. He continues, “They looked for something or someone to blame.”

RELATED: Dale Earnhardt Jr. Says He Felt a Spirit Save Him During a Fiery 2004 Crash

He continues, addressing “anyone who tried — and might still try — to blame Amy.”

Earnhardt Jr. recalls, “Do you want to know who was setting the alarm every morning and dragging my miserable butt out of bed to do my exercises? Amy. You want to know who set up my gym in our garage and then went in there every day, putting me through my paces like a personal trainer-turned-drill-sergeant for two or three hours a day? Amy.”

Earnhardt Jr. and Amy first started dating in 2009 and welcomed daughter Isla Rose in April of this year.

The athlete announced his retirement from NASCAR in 2017 after suffering his second concussion in four years in 2016, The New York Times reported.

He notes in the book that Amy attended every doctor’s appointment with him as he recovered from the most recent head injury, the scary symptoms of which he details in the book through journal entries.

Earnhardt Jr. says, “You want to know how many times she said, ‘Dale, I think you need to quit driving racecars’? Zero. Not once. We had conversations about whether or not I should keep driving, but when we did they were started by me.”

“Amy knew from the very beginning that I loved racing,” he concludes in Racing to the Finish: My Story. “She was never going to be the person to get in the way of that, even during the times that racing didn’t love me back.”

Little Women Cast Member Sentenced in DUI Crash That Killed Coast Guard Member Picking Up Wife for Her Birthday

Former Little Women: Atlanta cast member Melissa Hancock was sentenced Wednesday to 16 years in prison after she pleaded guilty earlier this year for her role in a fatal car crash, PEOPLE confirms.

Hancock, 26, admitted to four crimes in connection with the November wreck, court records show: aggravated involuntary manslaughter, driving under the influence, driving the wrong way and failing to obey a highway sign.

On Nov. 5, 2017, about 2 a.m., Virginia State Police responded to a two-vehicle crash involving a wrong way driver in Virginia Beach, a police spokesperson previously told PEOPLE.

Hancock was driving westbound on I-264 in the eastbound lanes when her 2011 Cadillac struck Daniel Dill’s 2009 Mazda head on.

Her “blood alcohol content tested at 0.112 percent two hours after the crash,” authorities told told CBS News.

Dill, a longtime member of the U.S. Coast Guard, was transported to Virginia Beach General Hospital where he died the following day from severe blunt force trauma to his neck and torso, according to the Virginian-Pilot. He was 29.

Dill’s wife, Natalie, had been celebrating her birthday with friends, Dill’s sister, Kelly Vazquez, told PEOPLE at the time. She said Dill arranged to pick his wife up so that “she didn’t drink and drive.”

• Want to keep up with the latest crime coverage? Click here to get breaking crime news, ongoing trial coverage and details of intriguing unsolved cases in the True Crime Newsletter.

Dill was en route to get Natalie when Hancock hit his car.

“He was the type of man who would do anything and everything to help others,” Vazquez told PEOPLE last year of her brother. “Just recently he had returned from Puerto Rico where he was assisting with the hurricane relief efforts.”

At her sentencing on Wednesday, Hancock, who appeared on season 2 of Lifetime’s Little Women: Atlanta, described her remorse to Dill’s family and friends.

“Words cannot express my sympathy,” she said, according to the Virginian-Pilot. “I can’t believe what I have done. I could never mean to hurt anyone.” (Reached by PEOPLE, her attorney did not immediately provide a comment on her sentencing.)

Dill’s wife, his friend and five of his family members reportedly read victim impact statements about his character and the loss they suffered.

“He and Natalie made all the right decisions that night,” Dill’s friend Aaron Goh told the judge, the Virginian-Pilot reports. “She made all the wrong decisions. And yet they’re the ones suffering the consequences.”

‘Heartless Psychopath’ Husband Allegedly Killed His Pregnant Wife and Daughters: Victim’s Brother

The brother of a slain Colorado mom vented his grief on Facebook against the woman’s husband, who is suspected of killing the woman and the couple’s two young daughters.

“I just want 30 seconds alone with that heartless psychopath,” posted Frankie Rzucek, the brother of Shanann Watts, who was 15 weeks pregnant.

According to the post, Shanann was going to have a son and name him Niko.

“My blood is boiling and the pain and anger and sadness I have in my heart,” Rzucek wrote.

In another post, Rzucek also shared a photo of himself and his two nieces, Celeste, 3, and 4-year-old Bella, to whom he described in a separate post as “absolutely adorable, precious, harmless.”

According to a family friend, Shanann and Chris “were having marital problems and she was getting ready to leave him.”

Shanann, Celeste and Bella were reported missing on Monday. On Wednesday night, the Frederick Police Department, working with the FBI and Colorado Bureau of Investigation, arrested Chris Watts, who had given multiple media interviews pleading for their safe return.

He has been charged with three counts of murder in the first degree and three counts of tampering with physical evidence, according to court records.

Multiple outlets, citing police sources, have reported the husband confessed, but police have not confirmed or denied such reports.

• Want to keep up with the latest crime coverage? Click here to get breaking crime news, ongoing trial coverage and details of intriguing unsolved cases in the True Crime Newsletter.

It was not immediately clear if Chris Watts has an attorney who could comment on his behalf.

The body of Shanann was found on Thursday, police said at a press conference, though no cause of death was revealed.

The bodies of the children have not been found, but Colorado Bureau of Investigation director John Camper said at the press conference, “We have strong reason to believe that we know where the bodies of the children are and recovery efforts are in process on that.”

PEOPLE has not been able to reach Shanann’s family, but CBS Denver reported the family said in a statement, “It is with deep hurt, confusion and anger to confirm our beautiful cousin Shanann Watts, her unborn child, and her two angelic daughters, Bella (4), Celeste (3) were viciously murdered by husband Chris Watts; who confessed to the killings. Please keep Shanann’s parents and brother in your prayers.”

Shanann’s family has launched a fundraiser page on Facebook to help with expenses for services.

Man Kills Son, 6, Wife and Ex in Murder-Suicide: ‘I Had a Perfect Life, and Now It’s All Screwed Up’

On Monday night, a 39-year-old New York City man committed suicide shortly after fatally shooting his wife, ex-wife and 6-year-old son, and NYPD sources confirm to PEOPLE a bitter custody battle may have been behind the violence.

At about 9 p.m., police were summoned to the Astoria, Queens, apartment of James Shields after neighbors heard several gunshots.

Inside the apartment, police found Shields dead from a pair of self-inflicted injuries: NYPD sources say he cut his own throat and shot himself.

Deeper into the apartment, they found the bodies of his wife, 38-year-old Saskia Shields, his ex-wife, 47-year-old Linda Olthof, and their son, James Jr.

• Want to keep up with the latest crime coverage? Click here to get breaking crime news, ongoing trial coverage and details of intriguing unsolved cases in the True Crime Newsletter.

All were shot to death, sources confirm.

A note was found at the scene, according to sources.

The sources confirm the note read, “I had a perfect life, and now it’s all screwed up.”

Olthof and James Jr. were visiting Shields from the Netherlands, where they were living, the sources say.

Shields had set up a GoFundMe page in his efforts to spend time with his son, but the page has since been taken down.

“My beautiful son is 6 years old and my ex wife lives in the Netherlands. We were married and because she couldn’t find work as an artist ran back home to Holland after she was pregnant with my son devastating me,” the page read.

Jennifer Garner Fangirls Over Ellen Page’s Dancer Wife: ‘I Cannot Stop Watching’ Her

Jennifer Garner is fangirling over Ellen Page‘s wife.

The 46-year-old actress posted her appreciation for Page’s dancer wife Emma Portner on Instagram as part of her #TutuTuesday series. Garner praised the dancer for her magnetic choreography and applauded Portner for making her Juno costar dance a little.

“I cannot stop watching anything and everything @emmaportner choreographs—she’s even made a sometimes dancer of her wife (and my own #Juno) @ellenpage,” Garner wrote alongside a reposted video of Portner dancing.

She continued, “Emma has translated her classical training (@nbs_enband The #AileySchool) into a ground breaking, kinetic, edge of your seat vocabulary of movement. Her choreography is so specific—you don’t know if the music is driving her or if her dance is somehow creating the music.”

Garner also volunteered to be Page’s date to watch Portner dance when she choreographs the New York City Ballet in the winter.

“@nycballet just announced Portner as a guest choreographer for the company this winter. Ellen—if you need a date to the premiere,” she said before adding a hands up emoji.

Portner and Page first made their public debut in September 2017 and later surprised fans by secretly getting married. The two announced the happy news in matching Instagram posts in early January.

‘She’s Got My Back’! Justin Timberlake Praises Wife Jessica Biel in Sweet Instagram Post

What’s the secret to Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel‘s happy relationship? According to “Like I Love You” singer, it may be because Beil’s always there to support him.

On Saturday, Timberlake, 37, shared a sweet Instagram showing his wife of five years embracing him from behind.

“She’s got my back,” he wrote in the post’s caption.

Of course, fans of the pair are used to seeing them support each other on social media.

Just last month, Biel gave love to her husband in a video on Twitter, cheering him on from the stands of Toronto’s Air Canada Centre as he kicked off his Man of the Woods world tour.

“There’s nothing better than watching your man do what they’ve been put on this earth to do,” The Sinner star, 36, captioned a video of Timberlake performing his hit “Mirrors” — even sticking out her tongue for the camera after watching him walk by. “I’m so proud of you, man of the woods!”

The duo tied the knot back on Oct. 19, 2012 at the Borgo Egnazia resort in Puglia, Italy.

“It was magical. It was an unforgettable evening,” Timberlake told PEOPLE exclusively at the time.

“It was a fantasy,” Biel also shared.

The couple are now parents to son Silas Randall, who turns 3 on Sunday.

Back in October for their anniversary, Timberlake wrote a sweet love letter to his wife on social media.

“Today is even more special for me because five years ago, on this day, I became the luckiest man in the world when I exchanged vows with my best friend,” Timberlake wrote on Facebook, captioning a throwback video of himself singing Leon Russell’s 1970 classic, “A Song for You,” which he recalled “was our first dance.”

“To my beautiful Jess: You have taught me so much about what a true love means. I can’t put into words what these last five years have meant to me, so… ‘Listen to the melody ‘cause my love is in there hiding,’ ” he concluded, along with the hashtag #Happy5thAnniversaryWifey.

On Instagram, he posted the same video and ended his post with an adorable shot of himself sharing a smooch with Biel.

“My tender heart is yours, now until forever,” Biel replied.

Rand Paul’s Wife on His ‘Terrifying’ Recovery After Attack: He Hasn’t Taken a Single Breath ‘Without Pain’

Sen. Rand Paul’s wife is opening up about his “terrifying” recovery process after he was allegedly assaulted by a neighbor earlier this month.

In an emotional op-ed for CNN, Kelley Paul reveals that her husband is still in a constant state of suffering, explaining that the Kentucky Republican “has not taken a single without pain” since the Nov. 3 attack.

“He has not had a single night’s sleep uninterrupted by long periods of difficult breathing or excruciating coughing,” she wrote. “As his wife, I have been distraught over seeing him suffer like this. There have been several nights where I had my hand on my phone ready to call 911 when his breathing became so labored it was terrifying.”

Kelley said the press coverage of the incident has only added insult to injury, criticizing news outlets for “victimizing Rand a second time” and “delighting in hateful headlines like ‘Not A Perfect Neighbor,’ and concocting theories about an ‘ongoing dispute,’ based on nothing more than speculation from an attention-seeking person with no knowledge of anything to do with us.”

Kelley wrote that neither she nor her husband has spoken to the alleged attacker, neighbor Rene Albert Boucher, in 10 years and that there was not a long-running dispute between the two men, as Boucher’s lawyer claimed.

Boucher pleaded not guilty to misdemeanor assault in the incident, CNN and other outlets reported.

His attorney, Matt Baker, told local station WBKO, “It’s just a disagreement — a long-standing disagreement between two neighbors.”

WATCH: Barron Trump, in Spotlight for White House Holidays, Has Fierce Defenders in Clinton, Bush Kids

Baker also told WKU Public Radio, “The unfortunate occurrence of November 3rd has absolutely nothing to do with either’s politics or political agendas. It was a very regrettable dispute between two neighbors over a matter that most people would regard as trivial. We sincerely hope that Senator Paul is doing well and that these two gentlemen can get back to being neighbors as quickly as possible.”

Baker added in a statement to CNN earlier this month that “we should believe” Boucher and Paul’s mutual neighbor, Jim Skaggs, who told the outlet that there has been a “long-running disagreement” between the two men over property maintenance.

But Kelley writes that “the only ‘dispute’ existed solely in the attacker’s troubled mind, until, on a beautiful autumn day, he ran down the hill on our property and slammed his body into Rand’s lower back as he stood facing away, wearing noise canceling headphones to protect his ears from the lawnmower.”

After the alleged assault, Paul suffered five rib fractures, including three displaced fractures and bruised lungs. His wife says that after he returned to Washington, D.C. last week, determined to “do his job,” Paul was diagnosed with pneumonia in his damaged lung.

“This Thanksgiving weekend, instead of playing golf with his sons or enjoying our annual touch football game with family and neighbors, Rand will be in pain,” she wrote. “But we will still be grateful for the love of our large and supportive family, and for the encouragement and prayers of hundreds of kind and thoughtful people during these last weeks.”

Jason Bateman’s Wife Accuses Hotelier André Balazs of Groping Her

Jason Bateman’s wife Amanda Anka is among those accusing famous hotelier André Balazs of sexual misconduct in a New York Times report published Thursday.

Through their mutual representative, Bateman and Anka confirmed that Balazs, who owns celebrity hotspots like the Standard, the Mercer in London and Chateau Marmont in West Hollywood, Calif, groped Anka’s crotch in Nov. 2014.

The couple were allegedly celebrating the release of Bateman’s film Horrible Bosses 2 at Balazs’s hotel, the Chiltern Firehouse in London, with the hotelier and some of their costars, including Jennifer Aniston, Jason Sudeikis and Charlie Day.

According to the Times, Balazs insisted the group visit an upstairs room only accessible by a firehouse-style ladder in order to see a better view of the city. Anka, who was wearing a leather dress, was hesitant about climbing the stairs, but Balazs allegedly insisted. Once on the ladder, he allegedly reached his hand up her dress and groped her crotch.

Day’s wife, Mary Elizabeth Ellis, told the Times, “I witnessed behavior by André Balazs that was inappropriate and offensive.”

Anka allegedly told the group what had happened, causing Bateman and his colleagues to become “visibly upset,” the Times reports. Back downstairs, Bateman allegedly spit his gum in Balazs face before leaving the hotel quickly with his wife.

“On behalf of Jason Bateman and Amanda Anka, we can confirm that the account of André Balazs’s outrageous and vile behavior on that night in London is factual,” Bateman and Anka’s publicist said in a statement to the outlet. “His actions were dealt with at the time.”

Balazs, who has dated celebrities like Uma Thurman and Chelsea Handler, has been accused of sexual misconduct by several women since Harvey Weinstein’s alleged bad behavior has surfaced, according to the Times.

A former employee named Sarah, who worked at the Chateau Marmont in the early 1990s, told the Times that her former boss pinned her against a wall, covered her mouth and “pushed his fingers in her vagina” at a club after the two had dinner together.

“I just froze,” she said. Another former employee said that Balazs pinned her in an elevator and tried to kiss her, but she was able to escape.

RELATED: Kevin Spacey’s Baby Driver Costar Jon Bernthal Says Actor Was a ‘Big Bully’ on Set

Elodie Trouche, one of Balazs’s personal assistants for two years beginning in 2011, said she did not witness inappropriate behavior. “He was professional and polite,” she said. “It was about doing the job.”

But a 26-year-old female media executive also said Balazs touched her without her consent. The woman said that the hotelier, whom she did not know well, grabbed her crotch at a party. “I was humiliated,” she said.

The woman told her roommate about the alleged incident, according to the Times, but regrets not saying anything in the moment.

Former Pennsylvania Officer Pleads Guilty to Death of Pregnant Wife After Claiming He Shot Her by Accident

A former Pennsylvania State Police Trooper has pled guilty to the deaths of his wife and unborn child in 2014, which he claimed was accidental.

Joseph Paul Miller pled guilty on Thursday to two counts of involuntary manslaughter for causing the deaths of his wife, JoAnna Miller, and the baby girl she was pregnant with at the time, while he was cleaning his gun, according to the Associated Press.

Miller’s wife was taken to the hospital in critical condition while she was given an emergency cesarean section, according to the Montgomery Colonial. She was given an emergency cesarean, but the 24-week-old baby and the mother died after surgery.

Miller, 36, faces a maximum of 5 to 10 years in prison when he is sentenced in the coming months, according to CBS Philadelphia.

• Want to keep up with the latest crime coverage? Click here to get breaking crime news, ongoing trial coverage and details of intriguing unsolved cases in the True Crime Newsletter.

Miller told investigators he had been taking apart a gun he owned in the family room to clean it when it discharged, according to the AP.

He initially said the gun was about 10 feet away from his wife when it accidentally went off, but he later revised that distance to about 2 feet away. Prosecutors, however, said ballistics and forensics tests showed the gun was only 3 to 6 inches from his wife’s head when it fired, and they charged him.

In a 911 call he said: “I, ah, was cleaning. I was about to clean my gun, and I didn’t realize there was a round … I shot my wife.” Miller’s children can also be heard in the background of the call, reports CBS Philadelphia.

• PEOPLE’s special edition True Crime Stories: 35 Real Cases That Inspired the Show Law & Order is on sale now.

Miller’s defense attorney Tim Woodward told the AP that Miller had resigned from the state police.

Miller remains out on bail and maintains custody of the couple’s two other children while he waits to be sentenced in Montgomery County.

President’s Former Wife a Regular at Zang Toi

POTUS ex-wife Ivana Trump was front row and center at Zang Toi’s runway show Wednesday at Manhattan’s Skylight Clarkson Sq, the day after her youngest son, Erik, and daughter-in-law, Lara, welcomed their first child.
Trump refused to discuss President Trump, but she had family on the brain. “I’m coming out with a new book Oct. 10,” she said. “It’s called ‘Raising Trump.’” While the president is often censured by the press for childish behavior, The Donald, as Ivana called the president when they were married, isn’t the subject of the book.

Kevin Hart Celebrates First Anniversary with Pregnant Wife: ‘1 Year Down and the Rest of Our Life to Go’

Kevin Hart and his wife Eniko Parrish have one year of married life in the books!

The comedian commemorated his first anniversary with a black and white photo of the couple — and soon-to-be parents! — smiling as they danced together at their wedding.

“Happy 1 year anniversary to this unbelievable wife of mine,” he wrote on Instagram. “Thank u for all that you do. Thank you for loving me & supporting me at the highest level…Thank you for loving & embracing my kids & the way you do…Thank you for turning my house into home…Thank you for simply making me Happy….”

He continued, “You are & will forever be my ‘Rib’….1 year down & the rest of our life to go….Our family & our union is getting bigger & stronger & I love it!!!!!”

The duo married last August in a lavish California ceremony after a two-year engagement and many years together. “I already feel married, the wedding is really just for her,” he told Entertainment Weekly at the time.

The couple broke their baby news in May, telling PEOPLE that they are expecting their first child together — a little boy. “We are overjoyed about our new addition to our family,” they said in a joint statement. (Hart also has two children from a previous marriage: son Hendrix, 9½, and daughter Heaven, 12.)

The 38-year-old Ride Along star posted a photo of himself in mid-cackle to Instagram last month, appearing to respond to claims that he had been caught cheating on his wife after photos of him in a car with a woman after a nightclub appearance in Miami Beach surfaced online.

“At the end of the day, you just gotta laugh at the BS,” Hart wrote, seemingly dismissing the claims — which had caused his name to trend on Twitter throughout the day. “#LiveLoveLaugh ….. .”

Tess Holliday Slams Man Who Penned Viral Instagram Post About ‘Curvy’ Wife: ‘Stop Giving Men Trophies’

Tess Holliday has joined the long list of social media users who aren’t happy with one man’s viral Instagram post about loving his “curvy” wife.

Many initially applauded Robbie Tripp after he shared a photo of himself and his wife, praising her figure and lamenting being teased for liking “girls on the thicker side.” But that praise quickly turned to criticism, with many calling the post self-serving.

“Stop giving men trophies for doing the bare minimum,” Holliday, a 32-year-old model and body positivity advocate, wrote alongside a pair of Instagram photos on Saturday. The first photo showed a tweet that read: “*guy likes curvy woman* 16,667 favs, national news. *curvy woman likes herself* 12 favs, 48 people in your mentions talking about diabetes.”

Tripp’s initial post – a sweet photo (taken by Kailee MaRae) of himself and his wife, Sarah, embracing on a beach – has amassed more than 30,000 likes on Instagram since first being shared last week.

“For me, there is nothing sexier than this woman right here: thick thighs, big booty, cute little side roll, etc,” he wrote in the lengthy caption. “Her shape and size won’t be the one featured on the cover of Cosmopolitan but it’s the one featured in my life and in my heart.”

He added: “Guys, rethink what society has told you that you should desire. A real woman is not a porn star or a bikini mannequin or a movie character. She’s real.”

While many applauded the man for the “beautiful” post, others slammed Tripp, accusing him of patting himself on the back for being attracted to his “thick” wife.

“That Robbie Tripp post gives me hope that one day, I too will find a man who fetishizes my weight to make himself feel like a hero,” one tweeter wrote.

An Instagram user weighed in: “This is incredibly insulting to your wife. Women of all shapes and sizes are beautiful. Putting yourself on a pedestal for being with her is arrogant.”

Tess Holiday in Straight/Curve: Redefining Body Image

As the post – and the backlash – went viral, many began digging deeper into Tripp’s social media presence, finding alleged posts that featured controversial content.

Holliday shared an alleged 2015 tweet from the man that read: “Born a Bruce, always a Bruce. Clothes, makeup, surgery, and public acceptance still won’t change how you came into the world.”

To that, Holliday responded, “Also I’m not here for someone who says transphobic things.”

Tripp did not seem too bothered by the outrage though. On Saturday he shared a Twitter photo of himself lounging on a beach-side balcony.

“This is what I’m currently doing while sad and sarcastic people are getting angry with their keyboard,” he tweeted.

First Lady Melania Trump Wears Hervé Pierre Dress for Eiffel Tower Dinner with French President Emmanuel Macron and His Wife Brigitte

ALLEZ FRANCE: First Lady Melania Trump counted on Hervé Pierre to not only select her dress for Thursday night’s presidential dinner at Le Jules Verne in the Eiffel Tower but he also designed it.
As the guests of French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte, FLOTUS and the President were a foursome dining at chef Alain Ducasse’s Michelin-starred restaurant. Earlier in the day the first ladies visited Notre-Dame Cathedral before taking a short boat ride on the Seine river. Their husbands, meanwhile, were in the Elysée presidential palace hashing out such weighty issues as Syria, Iraq, climate change and counter-terrorism.
Pierre, who also suited up the First Lady for the inaugural balls in January, said his initial idea was a long dress, but tonight’s less formal dress code called for a below-the-knee style. “She asked me to create a dress for this occasion. That was a big deal for me because I am French and I became an American citizen last summer.”
After exchanging different ideas, the pair decided on a sleeveless dress in navy blue and ivory with a red insert – a nod to the colors of both the American and French flags. “It’s not obvious. It wasn’t as though

NFL Player And Wife Skip Wedding Gifts And Raise Money For Rescue Animals Instead

NFL player and dog lover Logan Ryan used his wedding as an opportunity to say “I do” to a cause he and his wife are passionate about ― animal rescue.

When the Tennessee Titans cornerback tied the knot with Ashley Bragg on the Caribbean island of St. Lucia in April, they asked their guests to donate to Help Animal Welfare in St. Lucia (HelpAWS) ― a foster-based organization dedicated to rescuing, spaying and neutering stray dogs and cats and finding them forever homes ― in lieu of giving wedding gifts.

Dog rescue is with us wherever we go,” Ryan told The Dodo. “It’s just something we’re passionate about and want to make a difference in any way we can.”

Leading up to the big day, guests had been asking the couple what they wanted for a wedding present. At first, Ryan and Bragg just told them to donate to their local animal shelters. But once they heard about HelpAWS, they directed their family and friends to donate there instead.

The idea came to them the day after their intimate nuptials when the bride and groom put on their wedding clothes once again to take some photos around the town of Soufrière. That’s where they ran into a friendly stray pup, who instantly took a liking to the couple.

Charlene Penney, founder of HelpAWS, told HuffPost that the chance encounter with the pup (pictured above) is what connected the newlywed couple with her organization.

“While visiting the town, they saw how many stray dogs were wandering the streets,” she said. “After their photo shoot, they left wondering what is being done on the island to help stray animals and what they could do to help. So they asked their photographer about local rescue groups and that’s how they found us.”

Penney said they were able to find the dog from the photo shoot and rescued her shortly after the newlyweds had left the island. They named the dog “Logan” in the groom’s honor. Though Logan has some health issues, including tick-borne disease ehrlichiosis, Penney told HuffPost she is confident the dog will be ready for adoption soon.

“With the money [the Ryans] raised we were able to cover most of her medical expenses and we were also able to spay and neuter 11 cats we have in our care,” Penney added.

In 2015, Ryan and Bragg launched a social media initiative called Ryan’s Monthly Rescue with the goal of helping dogs, especially pit bulls, get adopted. The pair are parents to a baby girl named Avery, who attended the wedding, and two dogs, Nala and Leo, who were unable to be there.

“Our love of dogs may have been the only thing missing from our big day,” the bride told The Dodo. “The fact that we connected with HelpAWS and helped this one particular dog made the entire experience even more unforgettable.”

A post shared by Logan Ryan (@realloganryan) on

Penney said she is grateful to the couple for bringing both money and awareness to her organization.

“We have developed a close relationship with the Ryans. Ashley is even coming back to St. Lucia in the fall to help volunteer at our next spay and neuter clinic,” she told HuffPost. “We can’t wait!”

For more information on adopting a pet through HelpAWS, check out their website or Facebook page. If you’re interested in donating to the cause, you can do that here.

Bride Serenades New Wife With An Elvis Song During Their First Dance

These newlyweds are starting their marriage off on the right note.

On April 28, bride Heather Ni Chearnaigh surprised her new wife Lauren O’Sullivan during their first dance with a beautiful rendition of Elvis Presley’s “Can’t Help Falling In Love.”

Halfway through the song, the rest of their guests joined in for a sing-along at the Cork, Ireland wedding.

“I have always expressed myself through music and what better way to express my love for my wife than through a song with such meaningful lyrics!” Heather, a piano teacher and wedding singer, told HuffPost in an email.

The performance was a complete surprise to the Lauren and their guests. Before the wedding, Heather had been practicing with Lauren’s Uncle Mick, who plays guitar in the video, and also arranged for printed lyrics to be handed out to their other family and friends.

“As a wedding singer, I am used to singing in front of crowds and nerves would never be an issue, but singing to my wife, the most important person in my life, and my biggest critic, now that was nerve-wracking,” Heather told HuffPost. “Tears streamed from Lauren’s face as I started to sing. Immediately after the first dance Lauren hugged me and said, ‘You get more amazing every day.’”

The couple first met online four and a half years ago and have been inseparable ever since. Below, more photos from the couple’s special day.

Photo Of Husband Supporting Wife With Cancer Has The Internet Weeping

This viral photo of a husband supporting his wife during her cancer treatment is a reminder of what marriage is really about.

On April 14, Mackenna Newman, 17, tweeted a photo of her dad Jon posted up outside his wife Marci’s bedroom, writing, “My mom has to stay in her room in isolation for her cancer radiation so my dad set up a desk at her door to keep her company and I’m crying.”

The sweet image was retweeted more than 7,500 times and received 100K likes on the Love What Matters Facebook page.

According to Newman, Marci was diagnosed with thyroid cancer (which spread to her lymph nodes and trachea) in October. But Jon has been right by her side ever since.

“Jon goes to every doctor’s appointment, every blood test, every surgery, every radiation,” Marci told BuzzFeed News. “And, as you can see, if he can’t be by my side he is as close as he can get!”

Twitter was moved by Jon’s compassion:

And this face just sums it all up:

‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Star Jesse Williams And Wife Split After Five Years Of Marriage

Another one of Hollywood’s favorite couples has called it quits. “Grey’s Anatomy” star Jesse Williams and his wife Aryn Drake-Lee have split after five years of marriage, according to People.

The two reportedly filed for divorce last week, although it’s unclear who filed, according to TMZ, which was first to report the news. The split is apparently “amicable.”

The couple, who wed in 2012, have known each other for more than a decade and are parents to two young children, Sadie, 3, and Maceo, who they welcomed in 2015.

Williams and Drake-Lee met long before he landed the role of Dr. Jackson Avery on the long-running ABC medical drama, while he was still teaching high school in New York.

“I was a teacher when I met her, so she’s been with me through all the different facets of my career,” Williams told USA Today in 2010. “She’s stuck with me through thick and thick and thick and thin.”

Williams also made mention of his “amazing” wife in his powerful speech at the BET Awards in 2016 upon his acceptance of the Humanitarian Award, thanking her for “changing his life.”

The Huffington Post has reached out to Williams’ representatives and will update this post accordingly.

Husband’s Illustrations For Wife Celebrate The Romance In Everyday Life

Since 2010, artist Andrew Hou has been documenting life with his wife Kate in a series of adorable and relatable illustrations.

“Even though we just passed our sixth wedding anniversary in March, surprisingly, both of us still feel like we’re in the dating phase,” the illustrator told The Huffington Post.

Hou named the series “HJ-Story” after the initials of his wife’s Korean name. It started as a personal blog, but over the past seven years, his work has gained a large following with nearly 500,000 fans on Facebook

In December, the couple ― who lives in Seoul, South Korea ― welcomed their first child, who they named Chase.

Fatherhood is definitely keeping him busy, but Hou says he plans to keep the series going for years to come.

“HJ-Story is a personal project that I plan on doing for the rest of my life,” he told HuffPost. “It’s my way of creating a journal to document different stages of my life and to look back on when I get old. There’s usually a little story behind each image that I feel documents my thoughts better than a photo.”

Below, check out more of Hou’s warm-and-fuzzy illustrations. To see even more of his work, follow him on Facebook and Instagram, or purchase his book on his website.

Soccer Player Mistakenly Thanks His Wife AND Girlfriend On Live TV

A Ghanaian soccer star may be in the doghouse after giving an awkward live TV interview where he mistakenly thanked his wife and girlfriend.

Mohammed Anas, who plays for South Africa’s Free State Stars, had just been named “man of the match” when he made the Freudian slip of the tongue during a post-game interview Friday night.

“Firstly I appreciate my fans,” Mohammed Anas began, “and my wife and my girlfriend.”

Within seconds of catching his mistake, he quickly backtracked with some nervous-sounding laughter.

“I mean my wife, sorry for saying, I’m so sorry, my wife,” he said. “I love you so much. I love you so much from my heart.”

The 22-year-old scored twice during the South African Premier Division game, the Telegraph reported. But his gaffe left internet users wondering what may have been going on off field.

Here’s hoping the “man of the game” is still “man of the house”?

Here’s Why Your Wife Is Stressed All The Time

You can practically see the stress written all over your wife’s face. Struggling to figure out what’s really bothering her?

Below, couples therapists share the most common issues wives say they’re frustrated about in their marriages.

1. She’s tired from doing it all.

You lovingly call her superwoman but even superheroes have a breaking point. Far too many women with full-time careers and kids are married to spouses who fail to fully recognize how exhausting that balancing act can be, said Ryan Howes, a psychologist in Pasadena, California

“The conflict and stressors from these competing roles are evident on a daily basis and it usually appears in a pair of arguments: Either a mother works hard and feels guilty for not spending more time with her children or she doesn’t work and suffers the scrutiny of her peers for not doing enough. In either case, there is stress and plenty of it.”

In other words, there’s a 100 percent chance that your wife could use your sympathy and support ― even if it just means finishing off a bottle of wine and listening to her rant about her coworkers or the catty clique on the playground.

2. She needs time to herself.

“Me time” becomes non-existent once you have kids. That’s why you both have to carve out time for yourselves. The kids will benefit from well-rested, emotionally and physically restored parents.

“Making time to take care of ourselves is extremely important,” said Talia Wagner, a marriage and family therapist in Los Angeles, California. “Because there is so much on most modern women’s plates, many chose to forgo this time, not realizing how essential it is to their well being and that of their family.”

3. You aren’t doing your share of the childcare.

Who does the lion share of childcare in your house? Who picks the kids up from soccer practice? Who makes sure A Wrinkle In Time is read and reported on by the deadline? If the answer is “my wife,” it’s high time you stepped up, said Laurel Steinberg, a New York-based relationship therapist and adjunct professor of psychology at Columbia University

“Consider what you can do to help make her life easier, whether it’s helping to coordinate carpools, bulk-cooking on Sunday evenings or proactively caring for her and the kids on the weekends,” she said. “Take an active interest in what they are learning in school. Anything helps.”

4. The thrill is gone.

Don’t think that just because you’re married you can short shrift romance. If you’ve put date night on the back burner, your wife has no doubt noticed, Wagner said.

“When women remember the courting phase of their relationship and how different their S.O. was then, it usually brings about disappointment and longing,” she said. “Many feel like their mate has stopped investing in this very important part of their intimacy.”

That’s your cue to call a babysitter and tell your wife about the super exciting plans you arranged for Friday night.

5. She wants you to practice work-life balance.

You both are concerned with your work-life balance  ― but there’s a high chance your wife wishes you’d put more thought into the life part of that equation, Howes said.

“The men in my practice talk a lot about work, but their focus is typically on the deals, the strategy and the financial benefits ― not how it affects their relationships,” he told us. “The women tend to focus on the relational dynamics of their job and home life.”

To put it simply, “men need to understand that work choices aren’t just about the outcome, it’s about how it impacts relationships at home,” Howes explained.

6. She feels like a project manager.

Your home is a well-oiled machine and chances are, it’s due to your wife’s efforts. It may look perfect from the outside, but take a closer look and you’ll find a wife who’s fed up with being the unofficial project manager of her home, Wagner said.

“The wife is frequently the one handing out instructions regarding the many moving parts of their joint life together: She knows where to find missing clothing, remembers the bills due today, and that next Wednesday it is pajama day at school,” Wagner explained. “Essentially, she is managing and troubleshooting the internal workings of their lives. Unsurprisingly, many wives feel burdened by this massive responsibility and wish their husbands would take some responsibility.”

7. Communication is lacking.

Sorry, but “what do you want for dinner?” and “did you pick up Avery from gymnastics?” does not qualify as quality communication. Technology makes it easier to connect, but a few hastily sent texts throughout the day can’t stand in for quality conversation at the end of the night, Howes said.

“Women are generally more collaborative and verbal than men, and texts don’t do a good enough job of allowing a woman to vent and feel heard while she problem solves,” he said. “Technology is good in a pinch, but it doesn’t take the place (yet) of face to face conversation, especially with your spouse!”

There you have it: Put down your smartphone and be a better spouse. Your de-stressed wife will thank you.

Husband Decorates Bedroom With 7,000 Handwritten Post-It Notes For His Wife

One dedicated husband just one-upped us all with a truly elaborate Valentine’s Day surprise for his wife.

Jason Brinley of Florence, Alabama decorated the bedroom he shares with his wife Jennifer with 7,000 (!!) Post-it notes listing the many he reasons he loves her and memories they’ve made together.

Oh, and on top of that, he organized the sticky notes to create an 8-bit style design (reminiscent of old-school Mario video games) with hearts and words like “love facts” and “I <3 you.”

When Jennifer came home from work on Tuesday, the bedroom was totally transformed. She knew her husband had something up his sleeve for Valentine’s Day but she had no clue what to expect.

“I absolutely couldn’t believe it! It was crazy. I knew he was doing something that was taking a lot of prep work, but I had no idea it was that,” she told The Huffington Post. “The best thing I could think of was that he was making me a board game. This goes so much further than that!”

Below, a sampling of the Post-it notes that Jennifer received.

Between all of the writing and design preparation, the project took months to complete. Then Jason spent Tuesday hanging poster boards covered with the sticky notes on the walls.

On Wednesday, Jennifer shared a photo of the finished product on Reddit. The post has been upvoted more than 5,600 times with more than 500 comments.

For now, the Post-its are still on the wall as Jennifer slowly makes her way through each and every one. Afterwards, she plans to compile them all into a book.

“He really did think of everything,” she said.

3 Rules For Being A Good Third Wife

By Mandy Stadtmiller

“Marriage … You’re in it for life in theory,” my husband ruminated while recording an episode of his podcast recently as he sidelined to talk about our union, which just reached the 14-month mark. “But you can still walk out. I mean this is my third fucking wife.” His female guest interrupted him, rightfully shocked as to what he just revealed.

“Wait — this is your third wife? Oh my God! Why do you keep getting married? What’s the point of getting married?”

“I just love it,” my husband replied sarcastically before getting earnest. “You fall in love, you stay with somebody, and marriage is just the next step. That’s the way it was the first couple of times. It wasn’t like that with Mandy.”

Related: 4 Love Myths That Are Hurting Your Relationship

Listening to their banter, I was tickled by all the things he was saying (“her smile is one of those light-up-the-room kind of smiles,” “we’re perfect for each other,” “sometimes I’m afraid of her”), but it was that last six-word sentiment that stood out the most. With that sentence, he broke down his philosophy to a successful third marriage as the Rule of Three (as in writing or comedy): In the first two you establish a pattern, and on the third you deviate from it.

My husband’s first two marriages came out of a deep love, but they also came out of something deeply flawed: A sense of obligation. Our own marriage came from a different place: He really wanted it, and the only obligation he had was to his own desires.

So what did I do to change his mind about marriage? In his words, I was the anti-wife. (I myself called it being “unwifeable.”) I am the opposite of wanting to have kids and move to the suburbs. The sex got better over time as opposed to getting worse. Our emotional intimacy grew to deeper levels of understanding as opposed to that creepy sensation of living with your roommate. There’s more honesty, more communication, more intimacy — and zero game-playing.

You might be wondering what my reasons were for being open to marrying a guy who’s been divorced twice. I suppose the same qualities that made me so right for him made him so right for me. I come from chaos: My dad is a blind combat vet. My mom has severe OCD. I understand very well that how someone appears to be on the surface is often never even close to the real story below.

To me, judging someone for being married twice would be like judging my father for how he looked or my mom for how she behaved. It’s an entirely superficial and socially imposed status designation. Failure, dysfunction, and lessons learned are how people succeed in life. To discount someone based on their past failings would be both petty and short-sighted.

But let’s be real, there are still many questions that you need to ask yourself if you are going to become the third wife. Say, are the past wives still involved in his life? Will he drop you when things get tough? Are some people just not meant to stay married — and will they just keep making the same mistakes over and over?

Here are my top three pieces of advice for marrying that thrice-charmed spouse.

Rule No. 1: Don’t get married because you’re with some guy who “needs to be married.”

“In none of my relationships after my second divorce was marriage ever something I aspired to be a part of ever again. Meeting you changed all that,” my husband told me right before he proposed.

But how did I change it?

He fell in love with me precisely because he says I was so different than past girlfriends — and didn’t care about ever getting married again. He knew that I was married from 25 to 30 to my college sweetheart and wasn’t planning on entering the institution again anytime soon. (Which I believe also made me an ideal partner for him. I know how tough marriage is, and why you shouldn’t enter into it without some brutal soul-searching.)

As for him, he made it clear that he wasn’t some “marriage fetishist guy” from the get-go. I remember attending one of his stand-up shows early on in our relationship and hearing him say he was “never getting married again.” My friend whispered to me, “Oh, too bad.” But I didn’t think so. After all, I was over marriage, too. Ironically, that mindset made us both open to the institution again — our negative Obligatory Marriage Disease baggage was in the past.

Only when something is truly dead (like killing off all that peer pressure from friends, family, society to get married) can something new, such as a natural, powerful desire make a commitment of your own volition be reborn.

Rule No. 2: Understand what worked and what didn’t in your partner’s past marriages.

There can be a sense of dismissiveness (or shock) when people meet someone on their third marriage. But a lot of times this comes from a simple lack of understanding — and if you want to be a good Wife No. 3, empathy is your No. 1 priority. You best strive for compassion and emotional intelligence … unless you want to be reading an article by Wife No. 4 someday called “Four Rules for How to Be a Good Fourth Wife.”

In looking at what didn’t work in my husband’s past marriages, we both started analyzing his perspective, maturity, sobriety, self-awareness and experience. He gained these things as he grew older, which makes each marriage easier to understand. He was 20 the first time he got married, and 31 the second time. When he married me a year ago, he was 45.

Marriage No. 1: What worked: They loved each other. What didn’t: They were far too young, he hadn’t gotten sober yet and they both grew up and out of it.

Marriage No. 2: What worked: They loved each other. What didn’t: They stopped being able to communicate their needs to each other and he had a malleable moral compass at the time. (Translation: He cheated.)

Our marriage: What works: We love each other and are grown-ass adults who have spent thousands of dollars on therapy to gain self-awareness and compassion. What doesn’t: We forget to have gratitude sometimes, which can lead to petty fights and resentments.

What saves us: We have 87 years combined experience between the two of us and a whole lot of perspective. Neither one of us “majors in the minor” and we are able to draw upon various lifehacks in order to hit a kind of metaphorical reset button — often.

Rule No. 3: Resist the urge to throw his past marriages in his face.

I’m ashamed to admit I’ve said things like, “No wonder you’re twice divorced!” But it’s something I learned to stop saying after the first few major fights (hey I needed three tries, too!). It’s low, cheap, irrelevant, ugly, off-topic, and poisonous. Ask yourself how you’d feel if someone brought up your failed relationships whenever you fought. I myself am once divorced, and my husband has never thrown in my face a similar admonition like: “No wonder you got divorced!” He knows it only feeds the blech. Don’t feed the blech.

Instead, feed the “firsts”! You may be the third wife, but think about it: You have a lot of firsts with your husband. For us, our marriage marked the first time either of us had an official wedding (he had previously done courthouses, I did a chapel in Vegas). It’s the first marriage in which we’ve both continuously fueled each other’s creativity. And it’s the first marriage in which we’ve both been sober.

You may be the third wife — but if you make each other your first priority, you’re guaranteed to be the last.

This Husband And Wife Recreated Their Wedding Photos After 42 Years

Conrad and Louise Gonzales were married in 1974. Forty-two years later, the couple recreated their wedding photos ― and they look even more in love now than they did back then.

In a BuzzFeed video posted Monday, Conrad and Louise recount their decades-long love story, from when they first met in a high school accounting class, to their first date touring a college in Pasadena, California, to their July 6, 1974 wedding day and some of the relationship hurdles they hit later on.

While prepping for the anniversary photo shoot, the couple leafed through their wedding album, reminiscing about the big day all those years ago

“It also reminds me how blessed I am that after 42 years I’m still with my wife,” Conrad said after seeing the photos side-by-side. “I thank God that he allowed me to find this woman and enjoy a lifetime together.”

This Crafty Husband Built A Giant Advent Calendar For His Wife By Hand

One crafty husband just raised the bar for spouses everywhere this holiday season.

At the beginning of December, Benjamin Hewins, who lives outside of London with his family, spent two days freezing his butt off while he constructed a 7.5-foot-tall advent calendar with presents behind every window for his wife Zyleen.

Benjamin told The Huffington Post that ever since they started dating, Zyleen has put lots of thought and love into the gifts she’s given him. Now it was his turn to return the favor.

“I came up with the idea about two years ago when in the month of December, Zyleen would leave me a present every day on my drawer,” he said. “So that when I left work at 5 a.m. I would have something to open. It was just the most touching thing and every day I’d open my eyes before my alarm went off just filled with excitement. I felt like a little kid.”

Bundled up in long johns, Benjamin, who is a gas engineer by trade, got to work creating the giant advent calendar.

“I’m no carpenter at all, however I know how to cut wood and screw some screws,” he said. “It was more just using my imagination and being a bit creative. I didn’t really have a clear plan to start off with, I just started and kept going.”

When he revealed the finished product to Zyleen, she was blown away by the gesture.

“She was so emotional and overwhelmed,” Benjamin told HuffPost. “I love that look in her face because I’m constantly trying to think of something to surprise her with and I’m glad she really had no clue and was overcome with happiness.”

Inside the wooden structure were 25 presents. So far, Zyleen has unwrapped shoes, her favorite chocolates, skincare products, a watch and cable clips to keep her chargers neat. Another item was an envelope with a question mark on it that reads, “It’s a day out with the kids and I, make sure you are wearing comfortable clothes.” Benjamin said he will reveal the rest of the surprise in 2017.

The Hewins tied the knot in 2009. In 2003, they met for the first time at a nightclub, which has since become a department store.

“We went back a few years ago and had a dance in the utensil section around the same spot where we had first met,” he said. “All the shoppers quite rightfully thought we were mad!”

Though the Hewins share a solid, happy marriage, their relationship was at one time frowned upon by some people in their circle. Benjamin is Catholic, Zyleen is Muslim. The couple practices both faiths.

“People around didn’t really consent to this, but they didn’t understand what a special relationship we knew we had,” he said. “We knew that if we understood what each other wants and built our relationship on trust and communication then we would be unbreakable. She comes to church with me and I attend her important religious days.”

After thirteen years, the couple, now parents to two kids, are still best friends.

“I do really hope that when I’m 70 and have dodgy knees, I’ll still be in the garage tinkering around with old coat hangers or used tuna cans to make her something special for Valentine’s Day,” Benjamin said. “She’s a great woman and deserves all the happiness she gets.”

Military Wife Finds A Creative Way To Include Husband In Christmas Card

Husband and father of four Brandon Sistrunk won’t be home for the holidays this year, but that didn’t stop his wife Ashley from making sure they posed for their family Christmas card together.

Brandon is a staff sergeant in the Air Force currently deployed overseas in Iraq. Ashley and their four kids live thousands of miles away in Colorado Springs, Colorado, so she needed to get creative to make the group shot a reality.

Ashley’s mother took a photo of her and the kids, and a military friend of Brandon’s took a picture of him. Ashley then stitched the two images together in Photoshop and shared it with friends on social media. It was picked up by local news station KKTV 11 on Saturday and has since gone viral.

“Having a piece of your heart across the world, fighting for your country. It’s just a whole other level of emotions,” she said

Ashley also told KKTV that life as a military wife has been tough on her and the kids. Brandon was deployed during three of the children’s births and was unable to make it home.

“We tell the kids, ‘Yes, other kids have their daddy home right now,’” she said. “But their daddy is out being a superhero, keeping our country safe and that’s important ― that’s an important job.”

On Instagram, Ashley said that the holidays are a particularly difficult time for the family.

“I hate wanting to wish away a holiday,” she wrote. “Christmas is one of my favorite holidays, but with Brandon gone and the kids begging to have him home on Christmas, it just won’t be the same. I know we are supposed to ‘live for today!’, but I wish I could wake up tomorrow and have it be late January!”

Fortunately, Brandon is set to return home to his family early next year.

“[The kids] adore him,” Ashley told FOX21. “He will do anything for them. So I miss him actually being able to come home at the end of the day and they yell ‘Daddy!’”

Husband Turns Spare Closet Into A Beautiful Vanity For His Nurse Wife

Christmas came early this year for wife and mom of three Kari Koelsch.

After casually mentioning to her husband Todd that she wished she had her own space to get ready in, he decided to convert a spare closet in their Tiffin, Ohio home into a vanity where she could do her makeup. And it’s all kinds of gorgeous:

“I was talking about how we are always rushed when we are getting ready to go somewhere,” Kari told The Huffington Post. “We are very busy and I mentioned it would be nice if I had my own place to get ready. That way none of my things would be in his way.”

The couple, who tied the knot in July 2015, have number of other home improvements they are hoping to tackle. But Todd prioritized the vanity project so it would be complete in time for the holidays and Kari’s birthday, which is also in December.

“My husband always puts me first, which is nice,” she said. “As a nurse, I don’t often get the luxury of putting myself first. So it’s so sweet that my husband does.”

Todd told his wife not to look in the closet until he was finished, but ultimately Kari couldn’t stop herself from sneaking a peek at his progress.

“I was completely shocked when I saw it,” she told HuffPost. “I could not have asked for anything more beautiful and perfect for me.”

On Sunday, Kari’s sister Molly Maksemetz tweeted a before-and-after photo of the vanity closet. The sweet gesture clearly captured the Internet’s heart: the photos were retweeted more than 66,000 times.

According to Kari, Todd is planning to complete the project this weekend. He still needs to add additional lights around the mirror, install another drawer and finish the seat.

“I took those pictures when it wasn’t even done yet,” she said, referring to the images above. “I couldn’t wait! I was so excited.”

Kari told HuffPost that she is a fan of the color pink, sparkles and “anything girly.” So the decor, from the pink and white walls to the gold accents to the crystal light fixture, perfectly suits her taste.

“I’m almost shocked that Todd came up with such a feminine design,” she said. “He is a utility worker that’s usually covered in mud. He’s a big tough guy that wears work boots every day. I’m definitely surprised he thought of pink stripes.”

And while some couples may choose to buy pricey gifts for one another, Kari said it means so much more that her husband makes her presents instead.

“When I look at my vanity I think of all the time he spent designing it and how much love he put into it,” she said. “He told me he didn’t spend very much money on it and most of the things he put in it were on sale. But when I look at it, all I can think of is how priceless it is to me. Money can’t buy the things I have.”

Why This Wife Is Proud Of Her ‘Pathetic’ $130 Engagement Ring

One Tennessee wife is here to remind us that money can’t buy you love.

On Thursday, the Facebook page Love What Matters shared a post penned by Ariel Desiree McRae in defense of her $ 130 engagement ring set.

Take 1 or Take 2, I'll take you anyway I can get you

A photo posted by Ariel Desiree McRae (@arielunderthesea2013) on

The Tennessee woman writes that she and her husband Quinn were tight on money ― “scraping to pay bills and put food in our bellies” ― but didn’t want to wait any longer to get married.

She told her husband that she didn’t need a ring, but he insisted on getting her one anyway. The couple visited jewelry store Pandora and bought a sterling silver and cubic zirconia engagement ring set for the occasion.

They aren't big and they aren't expensive, but they are the most precious and the most beautiful things in the world to me

A photo posted by Ariel Desiree McRae (@arielunderthesea2013) on

While there, an unknowing sales associate made a snide remark about the simple rings the couple was purchasing.

“Y’all can you believe that some men get these as engagement rings? How pathetic,” the sales associate said, not realizing the couple was doing just that.

The encounter left Quinn understandably deflated and upset.

“He already felt like a failure, asking me again and again, ‘Are you sure you’ll be happy with these? Are you sure this is okay?’” Ariel wrote. “He was so upset at the idea of not making me happy enough and of me not wanting to marry him because my rings didn’t cost enough money or weren’t flashy enough.”

But none of that mattered to Ariel.

“Y’all I would have gotten married to this man if it had been a 25-cent gum ball machine ring,” she wrote.

The couple eloped at a courthouse in a no-frills ceremony that was just right for them.

“I’ve never been this happy in my life and I couldn’t imagine spending it with anyone else ever,” she said. “Here I am, courthouse married, $ 130 ring set, the love of my life by my side and happier than I could ever imagine.”

Tatiana Navka, Wife Of Putin Aide, Sparks Outrage With Holocaust-Themed Ice Skating Routine

The wife of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s chief spokesman Dmitry Peskov has sparked anger after she performed a Holocaust-themed ice skating routine on a reality television show Saturday night.

Former Olympic figure skating champion Tatiana Navka and actor Andrey Burkovsky wore striped concentration camp uniforms and yellow Stars of David for their performance on state-owned Channel 1’s “Ice Age” show, in which professional skaters are paired with celebrities, The Times of Israel reported.

The pair skated to Israeli singer Achinoam “Noa” Nini’s song “Beautiful That Way,” which was featured in the 1997 Italian-language Oscar-winning Holocaust film “Life is Beautiful.”

Navka posted photographs of their performance to Instagram after the show. She explained the routine was “based on one of my favorite movies” and that it was important for children to know about the Holocaust.

As the show’s official YouTube clip above appears to show, the routine was well-received by audience members.

But it drew considerable ire from social media users after New York Magazine and Daily Beast contributing writer Yashar Ali tweeted the clip to his 11,000-plus followers. Many dubbed the performance “offensive” and “tactless.”

The Jerusalem Post described the performance as “chilling,” while noting that Russia’s version of “Dancing with the Stars” also featured a similar Holocaust-themed segment in April.

‘I Can’t Bring Myself To Empathize With My Wife’

Reader Unempathic Husband writes,

I found your site and have spent several hours reading posts (obviously, it’s after 2AM), as I find it on point and no bullshit. I’m willing to, as you say, cast a critical eye on myself with regards to my relationship with my wife. Here’s my question: I find myself — sometimes reflexively — angry and resentful to the point that I have difficulty doing the things you suggest, i.e. empathetic and validating responses. A quite literal physical response.

I have made some progress on this through breathing and pacing (and digging my fingernail into my thumb to mute any unfair outward response), but what else can I do to get over this? I feel as though I am the woman sometimes, and my feelings and opinions are not being heard and have no value. I can’t say day without her saying night. My desire to want to be empathetic is very low. Thank you for your insights, and any additional advice you can provide.

man-158636_640

Dear UH,

Well, at least you’re acknowledging your block against empathizing.  This is half the battle, as most unempathic people say, “I would empathize if my partner just was more/less XYZ.”  You do allude to finding your wife contrary and difficult, but you are also noting that you have an overarching automatic response that prevents you from empathizing.

I encourage you to seek your own counseling and also to try couples work.  I bet that you saw angry and cold responses between caregivers in your childhood, because, otherwise, empathy would come more instinctively to you.  I also note that you write, “I feel like the woman…” and you equate being the woman with not feeling heard or validated.  This dynamic may have been one that you saw growing up, where one party’s opinion never matters.  If you saw a marriage where people were locked in a power struggle or where one person’s needs never mattered, it is likely that you are replicating that pattern unintentionally in your marriage now.  According to imago theory, your wife likely reminds you on a subconscious level of a caregiver who never validated or acknowledged your perspective, which is why it is so deeply triggering to you now when she opposes your views.

You need to learn new ways of responding, which likely start with figuring out why you yourself feel so triggered by your wife’s behavior that you shut down and are unable to put yourself in her shoes.  Empathy takes practice, but first it is essential to understand why you feel incapable of it, which is likely because little of it was shown to you or observed by you in early life.  After processing the impact of early observations and interactions, you can move forward and open yourself up to empathizing with your wife, which takes a lot of strength that you are not feeling right now.

I believe that the next step would be to share with your wife that you are trying to empathize with her, but you feel a mental block against it, and you need to figure out what is causing it.  That is when you can suggest couples work, as well as individual work for you. She will likely agree, if not the first time you suggest it, then eventually if you keep bringing it up. Good for you for trying to figure this out before the marriage is irrevocably harmed.  Keep me updated and till we meet again, I remain, The Blogapist Who Says, The Same Advice Goes When You Find It Hard To Empathize With Your Child.

The Sweet Wife, Book II: Maureen’s Choice

On orders from her Dominant black lover, Travis, the pretty wife and mother Maureen is rented out to the repulsive black man Sam. Dressed to kill, in sexy clothes and extreme high-heels, Maureen is taken to a bar where she attracts the attention of the rich and powerful Big Daddy. Even Travis bows to Big Daddy. It’s not hard to guess that this gross but charismatic black man will soon have his way with the slutty Mrs. O’Donnel. Later that night when Sam brings Maureen home, he spends the night, forcing her husband to listen from the living room, to the sounds of the two having savage sex in his own bed. Although Maureen is torn between her family and her desires for black men, by the time the ordeal with Sam is over, she’s ready to give up family and her simple life. She’s sent back to Travis. Oddly enough, she’s fallen in love with the man and he with her. But Maureen’s role as a whore for black men has nothing to do with love – according to Big Daddy. To keep her in line, he flies her to his estate, where she learns that her sister Eileen is also being held. He plans to make the innocent Eileen a breeder for blacks, and ensure that the sexually gifted Mrs. O’Donnel knows her place as the black man’s slave. The stakes are high. If the sisters don’t cooperate, Big Daddy will harm their ailing father. While Eileen becomes resigned to her fate, Maureen cannot help but rebel against the brutal and demeaning sex she’s required to perform with men she both despises and craves. Enter the fearsome General Suka and his dangerous methods of torture. When her life is at stake, will she be able to do the horrific acts demanded of her? Can the general finally win her surrender? The graphic and detailed scenes of sexual submission are for fans of extreme female submission and degradation.

We’ve Replaced Your Wife With Folgers Crystals

2015-08-28-1440791823-304978-folgerscoffee2.jpg

Everything indicated that the American divorce rate would drop after the invention of Folgers Crystals. Research indicates, however, that in the early 1960s, when these commercials were introduced, divorce was at its lowest rate of the decade. Over the next ten years, the divorce rate doubled.

Maybe the right coffee would have cooled down Donald Trump.

Man Plants Endless Lanes Of Sunflowers To Honor Beloved Late Wife, Benefit Cancer Patients

This man’s love for his late wife has only blossomed.

Don Jaquish‘s beloved wife, Babette, of Eau Claire, Wisconsin, was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a form of cancer, back in 2006, according to ABC News. Sadly, she died late last year.

Babette was a huge fan of sunflowers, so Don honored her in the most fitting way possible — by planting a giant stretch of  sunflowers for her. They bloomed this month and Don plans to harvest and sell the seeds to help benefit cancer patients as part of his organization Babbette’s Seeds of Hope, ABC News reported.

“She got to be known as the sunflower lady of the community,” Don told ABC News of his wife. “So after she passed away, I thought it would be a tribute to her to plant 4.5 miles of sunflowers on each side of Highway 85.”

The “sunflower strip” covers the land of five different farms, KARE 11 reported. Don, who planted the flowers over a span of a week, was able to rent land from his neighbors at a reasonable price to complete the project.

He told ABC News that it was Babbette who originally came up with the idea of selling sunflower seeds and donating a portion of the proceeds to cancer research. About a month after his wife’s death, Don formed Babbette’s Seeds of Hope. Through the group, he’ll sell the seeds in bags, which will soon be available for purchase, with Babbette’s face on them along with her story printed on them. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to hospitals, research and patient advocacy, according to the company’s website.

It’s something the loving husband says would’ve made his wife proud.

“I think she would be smiling,” Don told ABC News. “We had an amazing response. We’ve had people all over the world send emails.”

While the sunflowers took a lot of time and effort to plant, Don says it was all worth it — especially for a woman whose spirit matched the beauty of the flowers.

“They fit her personality,” the widower told KARE11. “She’d walk into a room and her smile would light up a whole room.”

Months after her Babbette’s death, Don found a note from his wife stuck in a folder. In light of the sunflowers and their seeds, her words certainly ring true.

“You move on and live each day,” Babbette wrote, according to KARE11. “Feel me in the morning air, and when you wake up and make your coffee. I will be there always.”

‘My Wife Is Fat’

Reader Wife Is Fat writes:

I felt compelled to send you a message after reading the Husband is Overweight entry because my situation is a bit reversed.  I’m in the army and my wife is the overweight one (200lbs and 5’4″) and she knows it.  She gained weight after she was pregnant with our daughter (she had hyperemesis gravidarum which messed her diet up) so I’ve tried to be patient.  After about a year and a half she has finally started to make half-hearted attempts because she wants to lose weight before having another child, in case she has another complicated pregnancy.  Half hearted attempts include paleo or various other diets for a month at a time without exercise.  Finally started some 21 Day Fitness routine where she exercises and follows a portioning diet but that lasted about a week and a half and she just made brownies the other day.  If I complain or refuse to eat them, she says, “Well, I’ll just eat all of them and just get fatter.”

On top of all this she has several tools and people at her disposal but I think she is too self conscious to get help.  I’m an endurance athlete by the nature of my job,  I’m familiar with nutrition and training. We have a gym in our garage even.  My suggestions fall on deaf ears because “women’s bodies are different”  Her friend across the street is a Crossfit instructor with a child of similar age and she just says “Crossfit doesn’t help fat people” …Sure.  I found a group similar to Stroller Strides at the park I run at, had some initial interest and I didn’t think she could really make an excuse for that one since we already have  a Bob.  She wants a “fat friend” to do it with her and don’t expect it to happen.

Ultimately, I have a hard time with this because I’m extremely self driven (also according to some of your articles I have narcissistic traits too), wake up early in order to workout before work.  I offer to watch our daughter when I get home but usually my wife is tired by that time or doesn’t really want to work out.  She refuses to put our daughter in any sort of day care (she’s 18 months old).  I will say she is a nurse and works nights once a week so I understand she is tired after working but that should be one or two days.  She recently got an appointment scheduled to remove her mirena because she thinks that is the source of her weight gain among other side effects, this is also when she stopped following the 21 day plan.

I’ve mentioned that I would like her to lose weight a couple times ( as subtly as I could and mostly because I want our family to be more active as our daughter gets older) but that gets a retort of “You’re a real asshole.”  I feel like there isn’t a nice way for men to put it.  I’ve thought about getting separated (for this and some conflicting personality issues) but its not quite to the point of “I’ve had enough” and I’m afraid of my daughter being raised seeing me as a villain if we did separate and it lead to a divorce.

Dear WIF,

I’m sorry you’re so upset.  You can read this post, in which I give advice to another man whose wife is overweight.  Basically I say that if he stops telling her to lose weight, she might decide to on her own, but if it’s a dealbreaker, then leave. I give the same advice to you. What you should not do is remain in a relationship where your daughter continually picks up on the idea that you’re dissatisfied with her mother’s appearance and that you consider her mother to be lazy and unmotivated in addition to physically unattractive.  So, either get out, or get therapy so that you can make peace with your fat wife.

If you have narcissistic traits, it’s good that you can admit it, and please realize that this means that you’re even more sensitive to how others perceive your wife.  You’re a guy with a fat wife, and that is not comfortable for you.  It would be enlightening to explore the origins of your current dissatisfaction and your marital dynamic in your childhood.  Was one of your parents passive aggressive (like both you and your wife seem to be)?  Was one depressive and unmotivated and the other condescending and detached?  (That would parallel your wife and you.)  Was one a caretaker and the other a narcissist?  Was one the guy who said, “No biggie, 24 hour shifts don’t make you exhausted for more than one day afterward and we should put our year and a half old into daycare despite this child being the emotional lifeline for you since I provide you with limited emotional support and implicit criticism?” Just asking.

Here’s some good news for your wife though, since I doubt you think she’s smarter than you about much: she’s right about the exercise.  Exercise doesn’t make women lose weight as easily as it does for men, because women’s bodies are different.  In fact, exercise makes people hungrier and doesn’t work for weight loss overall, according to research.  Of course it has loads of other awesome benefits and can make your body look more toned, and intense exercise (like your wife is unlikely to start with) may hasten weight loss, but in terms of calories in, calories out, I never lose weight from exercise because a 30 minute run burns 250 calories (I’m slow) and then I’m hungrier for two apples later.  Yup, two apples negates a run.  O cruel world. This is why you see so many runners who aren’t rail thin, and are even overweight.

Your wife needs to eat less and differently to lose weight, and this can be supplemented by exercise for all sorts of good reasons.  But we don’t even know if she genuinely wants to lose weight; it’s hard to access internal motivation when you’re being subtlely (or unsubtlely) commanded to do something or risk your husband’s loss of love. (Read this about how Type A, narcissistic guys criticize their stay at home wives. because I think a similar dynamic is at play even though she works.) Food, and probably caring for your baby, seems to be her source of emotional support.  If she wants to examine this in counseling, great, but that counseling is also going to focus on your “subtle” comments that undermine her self-esteem and may end with her leaving you, then losing weight and attracting a new guy that is nicer to her.

I also suggest couples counseling, because you both need it before you have an affair or model a crappy marriage for your kid.  By the way, if she wants another baby, you better watch out if you have one, because that will really stress your marriage to the breaking point if you haven’t worked on it by then. I also think that she might in fact want another baby in part because maybe then you’ll get off her case about her weight, and also it might make it easier for her to say that she wants to stop working nights, since having two kids is harder than one.  Maybe this isn’t the case but I’ve seen a lot of couples in this situation.

If you wanted concrete communication advice, it would be to say something like:

“Hey, I’m sorry I’ve been acting like an asshole about you being overweight.  Upon introspection, I believe that in addition to my own dislike of fat, on myself and others, I also feel we are getting into the same dynamic as my parents, where she sat around and watched TV and he would shake his head [or whatever their dynamic was; I’m guessing it wasn’t perfect].  I also want to apologize for talking about Crossfit all the time, which is difficult and intense for even super fit people. In fact, if I’m honest with myself and you, it’s not the same issue for me that you’re inactive as it is that you’re overweight.  If we both tried to limit our sugar intake together, this would be a good first step that would make me happier.  Also, I think we should go to couples counseling because our communication needs work and we barely have sex anymore [I’m just guessing that part].”  If you love her and can say that, add it in.

To be honest, your wife probably isn’t going to lose weight till your child(ren) are older.  She has no motivation and you may be more difficult to deal with than you realize (come on, eat her homemade brownie, or at least half of it).  I am a big Stroller Strides proponent, but if my husband told me to do Stroller Strides when my first baby was 18 months old, I would have told him to stride out of the house while I cried and ate ice cream.  I didn’t exercise from the birth of my first child till the birth of my third three and a half years later.  People either need intrinsic motivation to exercise.  Intrinsic is stuff like “I want to be healthy” or “I want my awesome loving husband to think I’m hot.”  It is usually not “I want to appease my narcissistic husband although I am certain that no amount of weight that I could reasonably lose would be enough to make him prefer me to a Crossfit loving 25 year old.”

Hopefully you can stay and be happy; if not, make your decision and allow your wife to live her life free of you and criticism, and you can get one of those Crossfit women and start enjoying your life (till she pops out a baby and exchanges the kettlebell for a Moby wrap).  Good luck and keep me posted.  Till we meet again, I remain The Blogapist Who Says Your Own Counseling Could Really Help Shed Light On Many Aspects Of Your Life.

Robert Duvall Shares What It Was Like to Work With His Wife Luciana In ‘Wild Horses’

Robert Duvall’s latest film is all in the family. In an interview with “The HuffPost Show” on Friday, Duvall described working with his wife Luciana Duvall in “Wild Horses,” in theaters and on demand now, and joked that she had a leg up on the competition for her role.

“To get it straight, she sleeps with the director, so that’s why she got the part,” Duvall laughed.

Luciana played along and agreed that their relationship was a factor in the casting process.

“That’s the only reason I took the part, really. [He’s the] only director I want to sleep with,” she joked.

Luciana then took a more serious tone and weighed in on her husband’s directing style. While some directors try to “force” actors to connect,” Robert takes a more hands off approach, she told host Roy Sekoff.

“Bob is very good with allowing you to be in touch with yourself. Like there were some scenes where sometimes you don’t connect. Actors, sometimes, they come on the set and they don’t connect with the scene,” she said. “Sometimes directors want them to connect with the scene, with something that is not there, so they force them to do something that is not available right now. And Bob, he said, ‘It’s just fine.'”

Bobby Flay Cheated With January Jones, Claims Estranged Wife In Court Docs

Bobby Flay and Stephanie March’s divorce is not what you’d call amicable.

The couple split in early April after 10 years of marriage and March is challenging the prenup under which Flay is required to pay the actress $ 5,000 a month.

In Touch reports that March is challenging the prenup on the grounds that Flay allegedly cheated on her with three women, including actress January Jones.

A source familiar with the case told the magazine that the former “Law & Order: SVU” actress is claiming in court papers that the 50-year-old celebrity chef “committed adultery” with Jones several times in the in early 2010. The magazine also reports that March has accused Flay of cheating with a food stylist and his assistant.

Page Six previously reported that it’s believed the couple’s prenup had no infidelity clause, and if true, March’s claims likely would not help her cause. However, TMZ reported that the actress also filed documents claiming that it’s her “amazing palate” that is responsible for his success.

Reps for Flay and Jones have yet to respond to requests for comment.

The photo shows the couple holding hands and closing their eyes as to not catch a glimpse of each other before the ceremony. The groom is saying a prayer aloud, while his bride-to-be stands around the corner.

Photos Capture Tender Moment When Man Surprises His Wife In Hospital On Their 57th Anniversary

The sweet story of an elderly man’s tuxedoed surprise for his wife on their 57th anniversary has spread like wildfire on the Interwebs this week as netizens everywhere celebrated the Georgia couple’s enduring love.

James “Jim” Russell told ABC News that he and his wife Elinor don’t typically celebrate their wedding anniversaries in a big way, but this year, his family encouraged him to do something extra special.

So on May 20, Russell — who says he’s known Elinor “since she was in pigtails” — donned a tuxedo and, bearing an armful of flowers and chocolates, surprised his beloved in her hospital room. Elinor has reportedly been hospitalized for the past month.

The couple shared a meal in her room, then watched her favorite TV shows. Elinor told ABC News that the duo “had a wonderful time.”

“Being in a hospital bed, you get bored so when they came in, it made me smile like the younger days when we were dancing,” she said.

The couple’s granddaughter, Reid Russell, shared photographs of the special occasion on Twitter this week. Her tweet promptly went viral, racking up more than 25,000 retweets.

On Thursday, Russell wrote that she was “blessed” to have her grandparents in her life.

24 Promises Every Man Should Make To His Future Wife

By Tom Miller for YourTango

I’ll be 36 by the time this gets published and I’m still not married. According to my mom, I should probably count on staying that way for a while because “all the good ones are taken.”

Little does she know that, sooner or later, I’ll likely marry someone younger or, gawd fahbid, some “poor” divorcee.

I’m not sure if I’m one of the “good ones” or not, but what I am sure about is that I want to have shared values with my future wife — and in return, I’ll promise her the world.

Or more realistically, I will commit to these 24 things:

I will never leave an empty toilet paper roll in the bathroom (or hang a fresh roll upside down like a monster).

  1. I will try to solve your problems instead of just listening and saying, “that sucks.”
  2. I will handle or (delegate handling) any pest problems.
  3. I will only say sh*tty things about your family when they do sh*tty things to you.
  4. I won’t steal your thunder and will always be your biggest cheerleader.
  5. I will eat anything you cook… unless it’s genuinely gross because life is just too short.
  6. I will respond incredibly well to the words “please” and “thank you.”
  7. I won’t get embarrassingly drunk at any event that’s important to you.
  8. I will surprise you with my depth of knowledge about completely unimportant topics regularly.
  9. I will bring home flowers for no reason, and no, I’m not feeling guilty about anything.
  10. I will not share all my passwords with you, nor will I ask for yours.
  11. I will sing the wrong words to songs… loudly.
  12. I will continue to despise reality TV, unless I marry a reality TV star.
  13. I will take athletic endeavors too seriously.
  14. I will make jokes at inappropriate times; you will generally laugh.
  15. I will refer to myself as a hero, not always ironically.
  16. I will lavish you with compliments, mostly sincerely.
  17. I will consult with you for most purchases over1,000 — adjusted for inflation to 2015 currency values — unless it’s a gift for you, or we’re just NASTY rich.
  18. I will cuddle you until I absolutely just need to sleep.
  19. I will not shoplift. This is probably not an issue, but I’m an 8th Commandment guy.
  20. I will not let disagreements with you color my opinion of you as a person.
  21. I will not go vegan.
  22. I will not start a band.
  23. I will help any of your friends move (provided they’re not complete jerks).
  24. I will not (completely) let myself go.

I know, you don’t have to say it: I’ll be a hero husband and all of your friends will be hella-jealous of how much I spoil you.

Here Are Gifs Of All The Times Alicia And Kalinda Drank Together On ‘The Good Wife’

Warning: This post contains spoilers from the first six seasons of “The Good Wife,” up to and including the season 6 finale.

When the sixth season of “The Good Wife” came to a close on May 10, it marked the end of one of TV’s most powerful, complicated relationships: Kalicia. Up until this point of the marvelous show, attorney Alicia Florrick (Julianna Margulies) and investigator Kalinda Sharma (Archie Panjabi) were alternately the best of friends and the bitterest of enemies. There were runs of episodes where they almost always shown together, and much longer runs where they were never in the same room. Gossip around Hollywood chalks the latter up to a vicious but completely mysterious fight between Margulies and Panjabi, which only makes the on-screen relationship between the two characters more fascinating.

Amidst all the turmoil, there was one thing you could count on with these two: They would drink. They loved drinking, a trait they share with several other powerful female protagonists on TV dramas.

So to commemorate their glorious friendship, The Huffington Post combed through six seasons of “The Good Wife” to find all the scenes where Kalicia drank together. Here they are.

2015-05-18-1431987861-8079182-Season1Episode1AliciaDrinking.gif

The ritual began in the show’s pilot, meaning it predates even the appearance of such staple characters of the show as Eli Gold (Alan Cumming) and David Lee (Zach Grenier). That’s how integral it is to the show! In this first episode, Alicia and Kalinda work together to crack a difficult murder case involving a faked carjacking. After Alicia presents their killer evidence, and the jury goes out to deliberate, Kalinda tells her that it’s a Stern Lockhart & Gardner tradition for lawyers to take tequila shots after their first jury trial.

2015-05-18-1431987898-1029929-Season1Episode1KalindaDrinking.gif

After Alicia takes her shot, Kalinda reveals that this was a trick: no such tradition exists. For a moment, it seems like Kalinda won’t drink her tequila. But then, of course, she does. Alicia smiles.

2015-05-18-1431987934-7707923-Season1Episode11KalindaDrinking.gif

The next nine episodes feature lots of interactions between Alicia and Kalinda, but none of them involve alcohol, sadly. They don’t drink together again until the 11th episode. Even then, it’s not in a bar, but in a room in their office: they drink beer and eat kettle corn while watching TV news related to the two cases of the week.

2015-05-18-1431988039-8472490-Season1Episode14KalindaDrinking.gif

In episode 14, though, Alicia and Kalinda hit the bar again, because they have some personal matters to discuss. (Glenn Childs has asked Kalinda to testify against Alicia’s husband Peter.) This time, Kalinda orders a dark beer…

2015-05-18-1431988092-6262329-Season1Episode14AliciaDrinking.gif

…while Alicia drinks what looks like tequila again. But she sips it instead of shooting it.

2015-05-18-1431988156-9689967-Season1Episode21AliciaDrinking.gif

This drinking session apparently goes well, because they go to another bar in episode 21. Alicia drinks what appears to be a martini with olives.

2015-05-18-1431988182-9482663-Season1Episode21KalindaDrinking.gif

Kalinda gets another dark beer.

2015-05-18-1431988228-9069830-Season1Episode22BothDrinking.gif

The very next episode, the second-to-last of season 1, opens with Alicia and Cary finding out that Alicia got the one full-time position they had been competing for all season. Kalinda waits for Alicia down the hall and, knowing that Alicia will likely feel crummy for beating out Cary, insists that they go to get drinks. They start by ordering two tequila shots in a row.

2015-05-18-1431988316-6076505-Season1Episode22AliciaDrinking.gif

They keep drinking, as is evident from the plethora of glasses that accumulate on the bar top.

2015-05-18-1431988346-6286008-Season1Episode22KalindaDrinking.gif

All that tequila gets them pretty wasted. A cute, younger guy hits on them, sending them into a giggle fit. He buys them yet another round of drinks.

2015-05-18-1431988373-3979951-Season1Episode22AliciaDrinkingAgain.gif

These extra drinks send them into the truthbomb-dropping stage of drunkenness, prompting Alicia to ask Kalinda whether she’s a lesbian.

Kalinda refuses to answer, much to Alicia’s chagrin. But then a call to Alicia’s cell phone saves her. Will tells Alicia she has to go see a client, so she composes herself and goes to Colin Sweeney’s house, where she finds him handcuffed to a dead female body. Alicia maintains admirable composure, considering her inebriation. Close call!

2015-05-18-1431988410-1505446-Season2Episode6KalindaDrinking.gif

Alicia and Kalinda next drink together in the sixth episode of season two, at an office party to celebrate a huge class action settlement. While drinking champagne, Alicia notes that Kalinda doesn’t look as happy as everyone else at the firm.

2015-05-18-1431988573-2916275-Season2Episode9AliciaDrinking.gif

Just three episodes later, in “Nine Hours,” one of the best episodes of the entire series, Alicia and Kalinda work on a stressful death row case from Alicia’s apartment. At a particularly trying moment, Alicia grabs them two beers out of the fridge.

2015-05-18-1431988636-9835993-Season2Episode9BothDrinking.gif

They drink them on Alicia’s bed. Slash fic alert!

2015-05-18-1431989198-858921-Season2Episode17BothDrinking.gif

They actually only visit a bar one time in the second season, in the 17th episode. They return to their beloved tequila shots.

A couple episodes later, Alicia discovers that Kalinda had slept with Peter, one time, many years ago, before they were friends. She’s completely furious. The revelation creates a rift between her and Peter — and, more importantly, between her and Kalinda. Throughout most of season 3, they only speak when work requires them to. Some have speculated that the real-life tiff between Julianna Margulies and Archie Panjabi first emerged around this time, though Margulies attributed the break to natural developments in the plot.

2015-05-18-1431989242-7090087-Season3Episode22KalindaDrinking.gif

In any case, they finally drink together again in the final episode of season 3. Though it begins as a kind of “Parent Trap” situation — Cary invited them both to the same bar — they actually manage to have a bit of fun.

2015-05-18-1431989277-8133208-Season3Episode22AliciaDrinking.gif

They even take tequila shots together!

2015-05-18-1431989347-2365038-Season4Episode6KalindaDrinking.gif

This bar visit sets off something of a renaissance in their friendship. They visit bars three times in the first half of season 4. They sip red wine and whiskey in episode 6.

2015-05-18-1431989381-2828868-Season4Episode9AliciaDrinking.gif

Cary joins them for some cocktails of an indeterminate nature in episode 9.

2015-05-18-1431989741-77136-Season4Episode10AliciaDrinking.gif

And then in episode 10, they go back to tequila shots. Kalinda is uncharacteristically late to the drinks in this episode, which worries Alicia.

2015-05-18-1431989768-8150781-Season4Episode10KalindaDrinking.gif

When she shows up, a few minutes after Alicia takes her first shot, she reveals that the drama surrounding her relationship with her erratic husband is over. What exactly happened to him is unclear, though when Kalinda says there’s no chance of his ever returning, it’s hard not to suspect that she killed him. He was a jerk, though, so this is an occasion for tequila.

2015-05-18-1431989799-8829444-Season4Episode11KalindaBringsWine.gif

One of the sweetest of their drinks sessions comes in the next episode, when Alicia is staying at a remote hotel while waiting to be allowed to depose a key witness in a case. Kalinda brings her fresh clothes — and a bottle of red wine.

2015-05-18-1431989853-9096019-Season4Episode11NeitherDrinking.gif

They lie in side-by-side beds glumly, chatting about this and that while drinking glasses of red wine. It’s cute. It seems like maybe they’re on track to be best friends again.

But then — nothing. In a big way.

Alicia and Kalinda see each other briefly in the next episode, but after that, don’t share a scene for more than two seasons after this hotel tryst. There’s no on-screen blowout to explain their bizarre separation, so this is when many (starting with Buzzfeed) speculated that Panjabi and Margulies got in some terrible fight. No one in the press has ever managed to figure out what transpired; it’s one of the best-kept secrets in Hollywood.

Whatever happened, though — and something must have happened — it kept Alicia and Kalinda apart right up until the very end of season 6.

2015-05-19-1432057374-1243209-Season6Episode21TugOfWar.gif

They sort of reunite in the season’s penultimate episode, after Kalinda has fled town to avoid being killed by Lemond Bishop, when Alicia thinks back to two times they’d met before. But the flashback scenes are either filmed in such a way that the two actresses may never have even been in the same room, or are repurposed footage from season 1. Fun fact, though: although this same tug-of-war over Alicia’s phone was shown in the drunken bar night in Season 1, Episode 22, the exact moment above is shot from two different camera angles in the two episodes.

2015-05-18-1431992398-6464942-Season6Episode22KalindaOrdering.gif

In the season 6 finale, they finally reunite for real. Kalinda surprises Alicia at a bar just before she leaves town for good. She orders two tequila shots for old time’s sake.

2015-05-18-1431992366-6225483-Season6Episode22AliciaDrinking.gif

Then, though, something curious happens: Most of the shots in the scene show only one of the two actresses clearly. For that reason, many people started to speculate that they hadn’t actually filmed most of it together.

2015-05-18-1431992454-480308-Season6Episode22BothDrinking.gif

On May 15, TVLine reported, based on some anonymous inside intel, that the scene had indeed been faked. The shots that show only one face clearly were filmed with body doubles filling in for the obscured actor, while Panjabi and Margulies filmed the shots that include both characters separately, and then the footage was merged together in post-production.

2015-05-18-1431992526-68236-Season6Episode22Goodbye.gif

The fact that Panjabi and Margulies couldn’t overcome their rumored enmity even for a day of filming made the parting — likely the last time these two characters ever see each other, since Kalinda is now officially on the lam — even sadder. Kalicia is, or, was, a friendship for the ages. These drinking buddies will live in our hearts and livers forever. And we look forward to revisiting the early season heyday of their relationship many times to come.

Thanks to David Letterman, I Have a Wife, Job and Best Friend

2015-05-09-1431194449-242350-Dave1.png

Five words. Just five words: Revolutionary. Hilarious. Mischievous. Subversive. Anarchical.

At age 14, I would have had no idea what four of those words meant, but looking back, that is surely why David Letterman’s short lived 1980 morning show enthralled me. It’s why I have been watching Late Night and Late Show for what? More than 30 years.

Also, at age 14, there’s no way I could have known that the guy giving a canned ham to a monkey washing a cat would be 51 percent responsible for my happy marriage, my career in TV comedy and my cherished friends. Yes. 51 percent. Trust me. I did the math.

I became a Page (think Kenneth from “30 Rock”) at NBC in Rockefeller Center in 1989 for one reason: to get as close as I could to the epicenter of revolutionary mischievous hilarity.

  • I was mesmerized by the absurdity: tossing things off a tall building, just to see them explode.
  • I was mesmerized by the insanity: putting a camera on a monkey’s back just to see the world from a different perspective.
  • I was mesmerized by the anarchy: the total disregard for his employer, GE’s authority. The “GE Handshake” makes me laugh still today.
  • I was mesmerized by the absurd indulgence: Getting Henry Mancini to write the musical introduction to “Viewer Mail.”

As part of my Page duties, during the day, I’d give tours of empty Studio 6A where Late Night was taped. I also sat in Dave’s chair, despite being admonished by my page bosses not to. I threw pencils through the “glass” behind the desk. I sat on the desk, too. In the afternoon, I wandered the halls outside Studio 6A just to get a glimpse of Dave as he headed to and from rehearsal. At the time, he carried a football and obsessively tossed it to himself and others. On a few occasions, I even manned the Studio 6A desk — situated in the hall outside the 6A studio — and handed Dave his dressing room key. On many evenings during my 18 months as a Page at NBC, I also sat the audiences for Late Night.

Just before the show started, Dave would appear to say hello to the audience. He’d crack a few jokes and answer a question or two. Dave had one joke in particular that got a laugh every time he told it. Before someone asked a question, he’d ask “Where are you from?” And regardless of their answer, he’d say: “Oh! By the laundromat.”

Just being around was pretty damn great. But for me, the best part was watching the show. There were a few chairs and some standing room behind the last row of audience chairs. That’s where the Pages sat during the show’s taping. It’s where, by osmosis, I learned the business of revolutionary, hilarious, mischievous, subversive, anarchical comedy.

And, there were a few days when watching the show got trumped by actually being on the show. Now and again, the show would feature one of the NBC Pages in some in-studio comedy segment. And for reasons I don’t know, I got asked a few times. One time, Dave came back from commercial break and on the TV monitors in the studio, instead of Dave sitting at the desk, the channel changed to various celebrities sitting in Dave’s chair — as if someone was changing the channel. Bruce Willis, then Connie Chung, then Fred Savage, among others. Dave shouted that he knew what was wrong and asked the Page to take care of it. The camera turned to the audience and revealed a guy pointing an oversized remote control. My job was to grab the guy and roughly escort him from the studio.

In the blurry screen grab, I was “guarding” one water fountain marked “Dave.” Beside it, another fountain marked “Staff.” While Dave was sitting at the desk, Chris Elliot suddenly appeared and announced his plan to do something no one has ever done… and that it was about time someone did. Chris pushed me out of the way, and drank from the fountain marked “Dave.” When Chris’ applause died down, Dave dismissed him and demanded he take the fake fountains with him.

OK, so it seems clear how Dave influenced my career. Although I was unsuccessful getting hired on Late Night, thankfully Bill Maher was starting up Politically Incorrect, where I spent five years. Now, what about my wife and friend? Well, a few days after I started my job as a Page, another guy started, too. He and I have been fighting about the best way to lose weight three times a week for 25 years. And, about a year after I started as a Page, a pretty girl showed up to start her first day as a Page. The first time I saw her, I knew I would marry her. And I did.

So, thanks Dave for 30 years of revolutionary, hilarious, mischievous, subversive, anarchical comedy. Oh, yeah. And that other junk, too.

Pink Lipstick Dreams: Ginger Becomes a Submissive Wife

Pink Lipstick Dreams: Ginger Becomes a Submissive Wife

With Ginger’s long black hair cascading over her shoulders against her porcelain pale skin and her sparkling green eyes brightening her face, the combination made her a drop dead gorgeous woman. Ginger knew she was beautiful at a petite size of 5’2″, but with round and perky size “C” cups, her figure was small, but very sexy. She looked in the mirror and put on the lipstick that Ryan had bought her the day before. Ginger had never worn pink lipstick before; it was always the sexy slutty red lipstick that looked good against her skin. But, Ryan, her boyfriend wanted her to wear pink lipstick for him tonight. Tonight was their one year anniversary and he had told her that he had a surprise for her. Ginger was very excited. Ryan had been talking lately a lot about taking their relationship to the next level. Was he going to propose to her? She wondered. Ginger pouted her lips out and pulled off the top of the pink lipstick off. It was a light pink in color with a little shimmer. She slowly applied the pink lipstick to the outline of her lips, then filled in her lips. Ginger had full lips and the pink lipstick made them look even fuller and pouty. When she was finished, her eyes looked even greener than before and her skin was even paler. Ginger actually liked how the pink lipstick looked on her. She then went over to her closet and pulled out the tight fitting pink dress Ryan had bought for her to wear out tonight. She was never used to the color pink. She usually wore black or red clothing. Pink was something new to her. She took the short pink mini dress off the hanger and unzipped it. Ginger already had on pink thigh high stockings attached to a pink garter that matched her pink lace panties with a pink lace bra. All bought for her by Ryan. She slipped the dress on. It was very tight and form fitting. The dress pushed her breasts into a nice cleavage and hugged her small waist and accentuated her round little ass. ‘Damn, I look hot.’ Ginger said out

American Sniper Chris Kyle’s Wife Pens Love Letter On Their Anniversary: I’ll ‘Love You All The Days Of My Life’

“Today, I have a choice. I can bury myself under the covers and acknowledge the pain of missing you and mourn the future anniversaries without you. Or, I can celebrate never having a day without you in my heart because you loved me enough to leave me a lifetime of memories and beauty.”

Those are some the words penned by Taya Kyle on March 17, the day that would’ve marked 13 years of marriage to her husband, the late Navy SEAL Chris Kyle.

Kyle, who was credited with being the most lethal sniper in U.S. history, was shot and killed at a Texas gun range in 2013. His life story became the subject of the Clint Eastwood film “American Sniper,” which was based on the best-selling autobiography of the same name.

To mark their wedding anniversary, Taya posted the poignant love letter on Facebook. It has since gone viral, with more than 530,000 likes.

Rosie O’Donnell Is Leaving ‘The View’ After Split From Wife

Rosie O’Donnell is leaving ABC’s “The View,” after a split from her wife Michelle Rounds.

O’Donnell’s spokesperson Cindi Berger confirmed to HuffPost that next week will be O’Donnell’s last on the daytime talk show. It would be the second time she left the program.

ABC also confirmed her departure.

“Rosie is an immensely talented star who comes in each and every morning brimming with ideas, excitement and passion for the show,” ABC’s statement said. “When she told us she wanted to exit ‘The View,’ we respected and understood her desire to put her well-being and her family first. We’re delighted she’s still part of the ABC family with upcoming guest appearances on ‘The Fosters,’ and we know she’ll return to ‘The View’ often with her unique point of view and updates on her work and her family.”

O’Donnell returned to “The View” in September 2014, having previously been a co-host in the 2006-2007 season. Her latest departure was in order to concentrate on her family’s well-being, following her separation from Rounds.

Sources close to O’Donnell told the New York Post’s PageSix that O’Donnell and Rounds had been living apart for months before their separation was announced on Friday night. PageSix, who was first to report the news, said that O’Donnell felt she had to leave the show to be with her five children.

“I can confirm that Rosie and her wife Michelle split in November. Rosie has teens and an infant at home that need her attention. This has been a very stressful situation. She is putting her personal health and family first,” O’Donnell’s spokesperson told HuffPost.

O’Donnell, 52, married Rounds in June 2012, her second marriage. In 2013, they adopted a daughter, who joined O’Donnell’s four other children.

In 2014, “The View” brought on O’Donnell, Rosie Perez, and Nicolle Wallace, in hopes of rejuvenating the show. But ratings continued to struggle, and there have been reports of tension amongst O’Donnell and co-host Whoopi Goldberg, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

On Valentine’s Day, HBO will debut a documentary about O’Donnell’s heart attack in 2012.

Anatomy of a 16-Year Wedding Anniversary Present (or What Not to Give Your Wife)

Sugar Daddy (aka the husband who is currently sleeping on the couch): “I don’t want to talk about it — I’m sorry I made a mistake. I bought you a practical gift. I thought you would like it, I thought you would think it was cute I thought you would think it was warm. And comfortable like our relationship”

Me: “So basically what you are saying is that — after 16 years of marriage — you think the best gift to give me are two pillows and a sheet?”

Sugar Daddy ( aka the husband who is currently sleeping on the couch): “It’s not a sheet it’s a set of flannel sheets and they were expensive.”

Me: “Really — are you really trying to defend your flannel sheets?”

Sugar Daddy ( aka the husband who is currently sleeping on the couch): “No I knew it was bad.”

Me: “So why the hell did you get it for me — you know I am not all about needing a Harry Winston necklace — but getting two pillows and a sheet makes me think that I have lowered the bar so low that you think it is acceptable to get me a gift that is really more for the house and for you than for me. We both sleep in the bed so really this is a gift for you. Nothing abut this gift says : ‘I love you, I still think you are hot, I cherish you.’ To me this gift says, ‘You are as exciting to me as a broomstick. So… I think you should take your pillows and sheets and get your own bed and sleep someplace else.”

Sugar Daddy ( aka the husband who is currently sleeping on the couch): “Oh c’mon I looked at all the things and went past the jewelry store and I even looked for a doll for you.”

Me: “So — you couldn’t find ANYTHING except for sensible pillows and sheets to show me how much you love me???”

I am ashamed to have to write this post — but I’m doing it for all those wives who get HORRIBLE ANNIVERSARY PRESENTS to try and figure out what goes on inside the mind of the married man. So please enlighten me.

Sugar Daddy ( aka the husband who is currently sleeping on the couch): “You said not to spend a lot of money — in fact you said not to buy you anything.”

Me: “YOU KNOW you should never listen to what I say.”

Sugar Daddy ( aka the husband who is currently sleeping on the couch): “I never learn.”

Me: “And of all the things you saw — your thought was — Oh I’ll pass on the candle and the jewelry and make a beeline for the home goods section?! Please explain yourself.”

Sugar Daddy ( aka the husband who is currently sleeping on the couch): “It was just a lack of imagination and romance.”

Me:” It makes me feel like you see me as a scullery maid. First of all the sheets you got — they are not even my STYLE.”

Sugar Daddy ( aka the husband who is currently sleeping on the couch): “I thought they were cute and warm.”

Me: “And how does this gift encapsulate 16 years of marriage — after 16 years you see me as someone who would love getting pillows and a sheet? what does this say about what you think of me and the years we have spent together? You see me at my finest when my eyes are closed ad my mouth is shut — asleep in bed?”

Sugar Daddy ( aka the husband who is currently sleeping on the couch): “It was dumb, what can I say. I just had no imagination, I didn’t see anything I liked, jewelry seemed superfluous, you have jewelry… I don’t know.”

Me: “And you didn’t think this would read as totally unromantic?”

Sugar Daddy ( aka the husband who is currently sleeping on the couch) : “I knew it was, I don’t know why I did it, I couldn’t think of anything.”

Me: “Why would a husband do this to his wife?”

Sugar Daddy ( aka the husband who is currently sleeping on the couch): “I did never learn that being practical when it comes to gifts is BAD. I should’ve gotten you something that would make you feel special — which is what I wanted to do with the pillows and sheets.”

Me: “How would pillows and sheets makes me feel special?”

Sugar Daddy ( aka the husband who is currently sleeping on the couch): “Because it was given from my heart — I wanted to give you something from my heart , I didn’t have any ideas what to get you.”

Me: “A pillow and sheets is from your heart — I don’t get it?”

Sugar Daddy ( aka the husband who is currently sleeping on the couch): “I though t it was something we needed and I thought you would like it even though it wasn’t romantic. I’m sorry I wish I could take it back. Now it’s too late.”

Me: To me this says — you have no idea who I am or what I like.”

Sugar Daddy ( aka the husband who is currently sleeping on the couch): “It just seemed like buying you an expensive gift would’ve been just to get you a gift — it still wouldn’t have meant anymore. It would have been a waste of money to buy you a necklace.”

Me: “That’s what anniversaries are for — to splurge and get something you wouldn’t get on an average shopping trip to the mall. YOU messed up buddy big time. To me this says — I am not of value — I am not worth the splurge… I am a sensible pillow and sheets kind of wife.”

My Wife Told Me She Wants to Cheat, Here’s How I Feel

When Elloa Atkinson confessed to the Internet that she wanted to cheat on her husband, the Internet went crazy. Here is her husband Nige’s side of the story.

Elloa and Nige:

We had reservations about republishing this, originally shared on The Good Men Project, here. Therefore we’d like to say at the outset that there is no prescription here, no recommendation or suggestion about how other people “should” conduct themselves. We do our best to live by the principle of emotional responsibility which states that I am 100 percent responsible for my experience, as you are for yours. The concept of honesty is one part of this, and while it feels risky, it is, as our teachers Duane and Catherine O’Kane write, “far less risky than acting out.” We share this story for the people who want to believe that vulnerability, as scary as it feels, is ultimately worth the risk.

Elloa:

I wrote a post about wanting to cheat on my husband, and it went viral. The response was mixed, the opinions passionate. The only voice that was noticeably absent was that of my husband, Nige.

This didn’t seem right, but it did feel significant, symbolic of the collective vow of silence that today’s men are living under.

While some people expressed their outrage that I would hurt my husband in this way, others shared either publicly or privately that they too have had these kind of thoughts, fantasies and yes, even obsessions. Still others protested that if a man were to speak about being attracted to women whilst in a relationship, he would be lambasted.

This conversation, sparked by my article, appears to be one we are ready to have. The next step was clear. It was time for Nige to speak.

***

Nige:

A few weeks ago, when Elloa disclosed her secret attraction, I felt like my stomach had been clamped in a vice. Then, as her confession came, an inward surge of Hulk-like anger, all too familiar. My thoughts were no different than some of the judgmental comments that appeared in reaction to her article on The Huffington Post. Let’s face it: the ego always speaks first, and often cruelly.

The difference was, I know enough about this part of my mind not to voice my thoughts at this point. The first thing I have to do in these moments is take a breath, then another one, then another one. If I react now, it’s game on for the ego, but game over for the relationship — and I won’t let the ego win, because it viciously guards a set of mistaken beliefs that drive me further and further away from the one thing I truly want the most: love.

Therefore, Elloa and I have a contract about disclosing our secrets and dark thoughts to each other. We both understand that secrets kill relationships, and see so many couples playing a long-term game of hide and seek with each other. In our marriage, we are determined to fully know and be known by the other, and that means having the kind of raw, honest conversation that Elloa’s article described. The purpose of this is to go beyond the secret thought to the fear of who we are underneath, the fear that is driving that secret thought, desire or behavior.

Having this depth of honesty in our communication is not easy. It is scary, vulnerable and unpredictable.

Fortunately, we have enough tools in our relationship kitbag to be able to work through any form of upset in a safe and contained way, without using the other person as a dumping ground. The critical element in the whole process is the intention that we both set at the beginning.

We did what we always do in this situation, utilizing a therapeutic process (adapted from Clearmind International) that forms a core part of our relationship. The process gives permission to the reactive, raging part of my mind to unleash its fury for three solid minutes without any kind of reaction whatsoever from Ell. Crucial to the process is that she remains neutral, and that no physical boundaries are crossed whatsoever.

When the other person refuses to fight back but also stays the course and remains in a place of neutrality (not always easy to do), something amazing happens: the brutal, vicious attacking part of our mind gives way and we literally “drop” into our feelings. This is the place no man wants to go — a pit of despair, self-loathing, shame and loneliness.

My anger, directed initially towards Elloa for her “disgusting” behavior, was really masking a deep wound that I have carried since I was a boy — the belief that I in fact am completely inadequate and unloveable.

***

2014-10-30-ScreenShot20141030at7.45.04PM.png

The root of this belief lies in my childhood, during which I lost a testicle after being kicked by another boy and the subsequent taunting, which dogged me for most of my schooldays. I grew up believing I was a freak. I called myself the odd man out.

Fast forward 39 years and there I am with my wife, feeling 6 years old again: raw, exposed and vulnerable, with my head in my hands. I am terrified to look up, afraid she will reject me. In that moment, I feel deeply ashamed of who I am.

I know there is only one way through this shame — I have to make contact. I have to let her see me, otherwise I’ll just be an empty shell. If I don’t let her into my world, then I’m doomed to walk this planet as a zombie, a man with a plastic smile that doesn’t quite reach his eyes. And yet there is so much I want to say. Somehow, I have to take a risk and open up.

As a man, I haven’t been taught by our society how to express my feelings. It’s as taboo as wanting to cheat, forbidden in daily life and permissible only in the direst of circumstances. Even then, only a few tears are allowed before the words “man up” come into play.

Even now, after nearly three decades of inner work, speaking about how I feel often feels clumsy and awkward for me. However, experience has taught me not to listen to the shaming voice that tells me that I’m weak if I cry.

So on the day Ell told me about her crush, I let her hold me while my body shook and the tears poured out of me. I told her everything I fear I am and she just listened, just held me and let me let it all out.

Eventually, I came to a quieter place. The dam, once burst, doesn’t gush water uncontrollably forever. The wave subsides. I am left with my beliefs.

***

After the outrage and attack, after the shame and the guilt, after the tears, there is a moment of true choice. This is the state from which I can change my mind, because here, I am open. Here, I am willing to accept help. I ask my wife, this woman who just a few minutes ago I thought was the cause of all my pain, to help me remember who I am.

And the truth comes back to me. I am not the odd man out. I never was. I am strong. I am worth loving. I am good. And nothing can be taken from me because I have everything I need within.

This is not a theoretical or intellectual knowing, it is an experience I inhabit when I work through, rather than dance around or avoid, my deepest fears. The function of my relationship isn’t to avoid experiencing pain or the realization of my fears — it is to give each other a soft place to land when one of us needs to show up, knowing that the healing is always twofold.

Elloa revealing her attraction therefore became a catalyst for me to expose a war wound that I carry on a daily basis and to do the work of changing my perception of myself. I do not do this work alone. I do it from a mindset of making conscious contact with my wife and with myself.

I’m a normal guy; I have thoughts of sexual attraction towards other women almost every day. Some are fleeting while others linger. It’s the ones that linger that trouble me the most. But I know that with each attraction there is an opportunity — often not as dramatic as this one — to take a step closer to my wife, to myself and to being the type of man I want the world to know exists.

And that is why, in our household, my wife Elloa is always welcome to tell the truth, and why I tell mine in return.

Find out more from Nige Atkinson about breaking the vow of male silence.

Wife Has Very Specific Instructions On How She Wants To Be Woken Up At 5 A.M.

Waking someone who is admittedly not a morning person before 7 a.m. is much like waking up a hibernating bear from his cave. At times it can be much, much worse.

That’s why one wife, who is not big on mornings, made sure to draft this handwritten contract when asking her husband to wake her up at 5 a.m. so she could get to work early before a big project.

If you read the note carefully, you will notice that after solemnly promising not to get mad at him, the wife stipulates that he may not wake her up by “grabbing my boob and shaking it.”

While that doesn’t exactly sound pleasant, it still beats an alarm clock, if you ask us.

Edie Windsor Looks Back On Life With Late Wife Thea Spyer

Defense of Marriage Act plaintiff Edith Windsor and her late wife Thea Spyer’s love story spanned more than 40 years. The pair was together up until Spyer’s death in 2009.

On Thursday, Windsor told HuffPost Live’s Caroline Modarressy-Tehrani that she stills feels her late wife’s absence, even years after her death — and not just on big days like when the Supreme Court ruled DOMA unconstitutional last June, but on regular days too.

“I constantly go looking to tell her something, if something exciting has happened,” Windsor said. “I mean I literally walk into a room before I realize what I’m doing.”

She also reminisced about her early days falling in love with Spyer: “I dug her. I thought she was great. I thought she was beautiful. I thought she was all kinds of things.”

For more on Spyer and Windsor’s lifelong love story, watch the segment above. You can also watch the full segment here.

‘Good Wife’ Leaves Viewers Shocked, Bereaved (SPOILER ALERT!)

NEW YORK (AP) — Viewers of “The Good Wife” were gobsmacked by the sudden, unexpected death of its dashing attorney, Will Gardner, on Sunday’s episode of the CBS legal drama.

Gardner, a prominent character portrayed by Josh Charles since the series’ debut five seasons ago, was gunned down in a Chicago courtroom by his unhinged client. He was pronounced dead shortly afterward. Once the episode had aired, Twitter lit up with astonished, sorrowful and even irate posts.

One viewer called for a group hug, while another issued a plea for a counselor to treat jolted fans. Yet another viewer expressed hope that, as with “Dallas” long ago in revealing Bobby Ewing’s death to be only a dream, “The Good Wife” would find Gardner stepping out of his shower next week, alive and well.

Other viewers vowed never to watch the show again, as payback.

Gardner was a rival lawyer and former lover of the character played by series star Julianna Margulies.

His death and Charles’ decision to exit the show had been well-guarded secrets. Charles, who entered the series with a four-year contract, opted not to re-up when it expired after last season, according to his publicist.

Charles’ past TV work includes the ABC dramedy series “SportsNight” and a season playing a client of therapist Gabriel Byrne on the HBO drama “In Treatment.”

Arriving in a far off northern tier state with no home, no furniture, and not much money presented many unique challenges. As a Wife, I’m Guilty of These 5 Mistakes (And You Probably Are, Too)

After writing “I’m Guilty of These 5 Parenting Mistakes (And You Probably Are, Too),” I knew that I needed to write a post that pays homage to the major muck-ups that I make as a wife. Maybe I’ll also blog about the mistakes that I make as a rainbow loom maker, Turbo Tax user and fitted sheet folder. Seriously, when it comes to mistakes, I’m experienced on how to make them in all areas.

My husband and I have been together for 12 years. It’s sometimes hard to believe that if our relationship were a person it would be in the seventh grade, donning shiny braces and saying asinine things like “cray cray” and “totes.”

Like all relationships, we’ve had our ups and downs. We’ve had arguments that ended with slamming doors and Michelin tires screeching down the driveway. We’ve declared our love and apologies over the phone once our tempers and transmissions cooled down. We’ve talked out our problems until the sun came up or one of husband’s farts lightened the mood. We’ve prayed together, cried together, laughed together and gotten food poisoning together after eating disgusting undercooked burgers doused in Heinz 57.

Most importantly, we have prevailed. We have persevered. We are raising two unbelievable children (despite our parenting mistakes), and we both have the same vision of someday pointing our rocking chairs towards the west, watching our grandchildren score major grass stains on the lawn and sharing Glucosamine and Chondroitin supplements.

However, as a wife, I make mistakes. And I make them often. I don’t need other wives telling me what mistakes I make, because I’m aware of them. You don’t need me telling you what mistakes you make, either, but you probably make these.

1. R-E-S-P-E-C-T

I sometimes forget that my husband is my husband. He’s been around for so long that it seems like he’s just some dude leaving crumbs of Wavy Lays on the couch and dirty boxers on the floor right next to the hamper. I forget that he’s a hard worker, a wonderful provider and a loving father. I forget that sometimes my sarcasm and jokes hit below the belt. I forget that my job as his wife is to encourage him, compliment him, value him and support him. I often forget that he deserves my utmost respect.

2. Let’s Get It On

I’m tired. I’m tired a lot. By 9 p.m., the only things on my mind are folding the laundry, putting the kids’ snacks in their backpacks, locking the doors, feeding the malnourished fish, setting the clocks, brushing my teeth, lotioning my ashy elbows and getting into the bed to watch a show that does NOT involve animated pirates, sappy music while Danny Tanner resolves an issue, restoring cars or selling rare finds at a Las Vegas pawn shop. I want to relax and heave a collected sigh of relief that the day is done. I have no desire to play birds and bees. But, by God, men need it. They might just implode if they don’t get it. My husband is just as in need as the hungry Beta Fish. I often forget that I’m the one that must meet the need, whether or not I’m in the need-meeting mood.

3. Nothing Compares 2 U

Since the day my first child was born in 2006, she has been my reason for living. When her brother came along in 2010, he ranked right next to her on my priorities list. My children’s happiness and well-being far trumps anything in my life. Sometimes their needs trump my husband’s happiness and well-being. Date night shouldn’t solely be about my SAHM batteries recharging and how many margaritas I can consume before it’s time to go home. It should be about refreshing our relationship. I often forget that my husband needs my attention, my encouragement and my admiration as much as, if not more than, my children.

4. Control

I may make a ton of mistakes, but I know how to properly load a dishwasher. I also know how to hang a picture where it will be the most aesthetically pleasing in our home. I can discipline a kid and cook a meatloaf and I can pick out window treatments. I don’t need help in any of these areas, but my husband sometimes thinks that he should deposit two pennies into those accounts. Before I even hear his suggestion on how to cram more dishes into the dishwasher or where to hang the portrait or how to spice up dinner, I shoot him down (see no. 1, R-E-S-P-E-C-T). Sometimes I make him think that his idea is the worst idea since Miley Cyrus squatted on a wrecking ball. I often forget that my husband has pretty good ideas and although I’ll never admit it to him, that picture would look better over the mantle.

5. Pretty Woman

I once sent my husband the most brutally honest text message: “Let me know what time you’ll be home so I can get out of my pajamas and appear to have been productive today.” Some days the extent of my beauty regimen is brushing my teeth and popping the zit on my chin. If it’s a particularly cold day, I refuse to wear anything that didn’t come from the Gap Athletic Wear Collection. (FYI — you don’t have to actually be athletic to wear athletic wear). But, I know my husband appreciates it when I look nice. He never fails to tell me that I look beautiful when I’ve cleaned up and accessorized with scarves and dangly earrings. Some women like to believe that “inner beauty” is all a man needs. Newsflash — it’s not. Inner beauty is a wonderful, pure, lovely, noble thing. But a man also appreciates a nice-looking woman. I’m not saying that all women should morph into June Cleaver and mop Kool-Aid from the floor while wearing stilettos, but I often forget that removing eye boogers, washing the Crisco from my hair and trading the yoga pants for regular clothes once in a while is a step in the right direction.

Some days I feel as if I’ve really mucked up the whole wife-y thing. I rudely rolled my eyes at my husband, I didn’t pat him on the back when he really needed it, I put my own needs and my children’s needs before his. And the guilt sets in because I’ve got a really good man — he’s faithful, he’s hard-working, he’s kind, he’s easy-going. Watching him interact with our children still melts my heart and makes me smile.

I often forget to do the right thing in our marriage, but I’ll never forget how much I love my husband. That love is what fuels my desire to be better. That love is what makes me better today than yesterday. That love is the same love that will be in my heart when we rock on our back porch and watch our children and grandchildren. That love will be there when I forget to buy him Miralax or put tennis balls on his walker. I’ll always make mistakes, but that love will always remain.

I’m Letting My Wife Go

2014-02-14-Buddies.jpg

I’m sure it may come as a shock to some people, but I let my wife go. It was one of the hardest things I’ve had to do, but it was the right thing for the both of us.

No, we’re not getting a divorce and no, we’re not separating. Truth be told, the practice of “letting go” has actually brought us closer together. But in order to understand what I mean by “letting go,” you must first understand that Kim and I are two very different people.

In fact, the differences between us were Kim’s primary concern with us getting married. “Seth, a fish may love a bird,” she said. “But where would they live?”

I smiled at the comparison because it’s fairly accurate.

Kim and I are incredibly different people. She’s the oldest in her family; I’m the youngest in mine. She’s very responsible; I’m…very much not. She loves the city; I prefer the country. She loves healthy food; I love junk food. She enjoys school; I despise school. She wants to watch British dramas; I’d rather watch comedies. She loves to sing and dance; I’d rather not. She prefers flying; I prefer driving. She loves to be with people, and I’d prefer to be alone. Kim is a driven, career-minded, goal-oriented woman, while I, on the other hand, am a laid-back fellow who prefers gardening and writing over anything else.

To put it simply, Kim is an extrovert while I am an introvert. Frankly, it sometimes amazes me that Kim and I even metlet alone got married!

But after knowing Kim for ten years, I knew that I simply couldn’t live without her.

Despite their many differences, the fish loved the bird and the bird loved the fish.

So we put our faith in that love and did the only thing a fish and a bird could do: we got married and built a bird bath.

The bird bath is a symbol for our middle ground — the place where we come together — but it’s also the place from which we feel comfortable to let each other go. To “let go” of someone is to love them enough to let them fly or swim away (or to be themselves) and yet trust that they will always come back.

For if we truly love each other, we have to be willing to “let each other go” to become the best versions of ourselves. Kim encourages me to keep swimming (develop my talents), and I encourage her to fly higher (chase her dreams).

Abusive, one-sided relationships are heartbreaking to me. How can we claim to love someone and then try to limit that person’s identity? Marriage is a union, to be sure, but it’s a union that should liberate, not incarcerate. Real love shouldn’t limit a person’s potential, it should expand it.

Real love tells me to let Kim fly and trust that she’ll always come back. I have to let her go so she can chase her dreams, pursue her education and develop her talents. Additionally, I have to let go of my fears that she might fly away and never come back. If the fish were to clip the bird’s wings, he would risk trimming her dreams and smothering her altogether.

That being said, I wish I could say that I’m perfect at letting my wife fly. But I’m not. In the end, we’re still two very different people. I have some deeply rooted insecurities, and we’ve had to learn to navigate each other’s personalities.

But while I certainly can’t tell you that I’m perfect, I can tell you that every time I’ve encouraged Kim to fly she loves me all the more for supporting her and having the faith to let her go.

So, if you truly love someone, have the faith to “let them go.” Encourage them to be the fullest measure of themselves, and you will be overwhelmed by the love that your spouse returns to you.

Josselyn’s Wife

Josselyn’s Wife

JOSSEEYNS WIFE – 1918, — CHAPTER I – LATIMER reached the big station just before the rain began to fall, and whisked into its gloomy depths with a smile of triumph on her pretty gipsy face. Her suit had just been pressed, and her hat was new it would have-been a calamity to have them get wet. Aunt Elsie had cautioned her to carry her umbrella that morning, and Ellen had merely shaken her head the November sky was dark and low, it was true, but they were reaching the season now when they might look for snow, not rain. However, now it was raining, and she had escaped it undeservedIy. Ellen followed the line of hurrying Long Island commuters down the long arcade, her own feet adding to the unceasing crisp and shuffle of a thousand other feet. She went past the paper stand, where laden men were slapping down pennies and rushing on with hardly a perceptible pause, and where young boys and girls were buying packages of gum and chocolates, and where all the pretty girls in the world were smiling from the brilliant covers of magazines girls peeling pumpkins, in demure kitchen ginghams, and girls furred to the eyes, going to football games with pennants over their shoulders, for Thanksgiving was close at hand. And she went past the clock that was watched by so many patient and eager eyes, and the empty bootblack stand where a tired woman had established herself and her babies, and so came to the special gate among a dozen gates where a red boxed sign showed the words Express Port Washington 522. Already a hundred tired men and women, in sober wet-weather clothing, were pressed against this gate, and Ellen pressed with them. She had spent the morning, as usual, at the Art Students League, butshe had deliberately loitered about the city, all the afternoon, in the hope that Ellis Thorpe would join her on this train. Ellens destination was Port Wash- ington, a quiet old village at the terminus of the line, but Ellis lived at Douglaston, which was a fashionable modern colony,…
