Willy Chavarria to Repurpose Wool for Charity in Fall Collection

Willy Chavarria has come up with a novel idea for his submission for the International Woolmark Prize. As expected, Chavarria, one of six finalists for the honor, will present a wool-based collection, “Futurismo,” on Saturday during London Fashion Week. It will offer what the designer described as a “Band-Aid skin,” a double-layer knitwear fabric that combines a 45 percent nylon exterior with a merino wool interior for moisture wicking, breathability and climate control.
But what he’s hoping will set apart the collection of overcoats, pullovers, cardigans and oversized trousers is his message of sustainability.
The designer is asking customers to return the pieces when they’re finished wearing them and the wool will be repurposed into roses that will be sold and the proceeds donated to Life After Hate, an organization that fights racism and violence.
Chavarria said, “The idea of Australian merino wool being an incredibly sustainable fiber made me approach human sustainability as part environmental and part humanitarian. I took a human-centric approach to share the idea that kindness is the all-encompassing objective when it comes to sustainability and shifting fashion to more bio-centric fibers.”
He said every collection he designs includes “some form of an angle in which I hope to share

Willy Chavarria Men’s Spring 2018

Willy Chavarria used The Eagle, New York’s iconic leather bar, as a setting for his spring collection. But he juxtaposed the gritty gay subculture scene by filling the bar with fragrant flowers and parking two pristine Lowrider cars outside the venue.
“I wanted to show two cultures that don’t co-exist,” Chavarria said.
The oversize leather outerwear pieces, baggy pants and caps had a clear Robert Mapplethorpe influence, while striped polos and slouchy cropped khakis had a strong Chollo vibe.
Plays on renowned American logos such as Coors and Marlboro were reinvented as graphic adornments on sweatshirts, shorts and pants. The show pieces were hand-painted by Chavarria’s friend and collaborator, Brian Calvin. The one-of-a-kind-pieces will be sold at galleries as artwork and turned into prints for the commercial collection.
Other graphic slogans included “Silence Still Equals Death,” a play on the AIDS-related mantra from the Eighties. “That now applies to all things in these highly political times,” he said.

Paris Cocktail Celebrates Willy Vanderperre’s Fanzine

’ZINE SCENE: The fifth and sixth releases of Willy Vanderperre’s 12-issue fanzine, called /12 that’s being done throughout one year in association with Idea Books, was celebrated in Paris on Saturday evening.
Fans of the photographer and the two models — Kiki Willems and Jonas Gloer — who feature in the editions flocked to the Comme des Garçons Trading Museum Paris for the event. That’s also where the publication was launched exclusively prior to being introduced worldwide and online starting July 1.
Just 300 copies of each issue are available, and every one in the series, each of which features one model — such as Julia Nobis, Clément Chabernard and Abbey Lee — has followed the same format. This includes a double-page spread shot with a flash of the person wearing makeup; a photo of a detail of the model, usually their ear, and a loose-leaf format. It’s almost Hockney-eque in its multifaceted perspective and approach.
“He builds a portrait of the person rather than the model,” said David Owen, a cofounder of Idea Books, which has worked on numerous projects with Vanderperre. Owen added that often there is a waiting list of 300 people for each edition of /12.
“I don’t think there

Primus Goes All ‘Willy Wonka’ To Give Fans A Chance To Win Tickets For Life

Primus is bringing all your “Willy Wonka” dreams to life.

The band, which is known for their insane cover of “The Devil Went Down To Georgia” and creating the original “South Park” theme, has a new LP dropping Tuesday, Oct. 21, and to celebrate they’re giving fans a chance to win tickets for life, according to Rolling Stone.

Instead of golden tickets, fans will be given the chance to find golden vinyl records mixed in with the “Primus and the Chocolate Factory with the Fungi Ensemble” albums. You can see the chocolate-colored records being made in the band’s “Willy Wonka”-style video above.

The album marks the first time since 1995 that the band’s original lineup has put out an LP together. For those who can’t wait for Tuesday, The New York Times has a streamable version available now.

The chance to win free tickets for life is pretty incredible, but to keep things in perspective Primus fans should really do their best to remember the words of Willy Wonka: “Don’t forget what happened to the man who suddenly got everything he always wanted. He lived happily ever after.”
