Tamera Mowry Says Woman Who Called Cops on Black Man Babysitting White Kids Should Be Arrested

Tamera Mowry wants consequences for the woman who called the police on a black man babysitting white kids.

“I hope this woman was arrested for harassment,” Mowry, 40, said Wednesday on The Real. “She followed him for an hour! I would have cursed that woman out. I don’t like entitlement and I don’t like prejudice.”

Georgia man Corey Lewis was stopped by police for “babysitting while black” over the weekend, sparking nationwide outrage. Lewis recorded the encounter on Facebook Live when he noticed that a strange woman was following him.

“We then left to go get gas across the street,” Lewis told CBS46. “She moved closer to the gas station and waited there.”

The woman eventually called the police, and Lewis’ footage shows a Cobb County officer questioning the children. The parents were in disbelief.

“I said, ‘Are you saying that because there’s an African American male driving my two white kids, that he was stopped and pulled over and questioned?’ and he said, ‘I’m sorry ma’am, that’s exactly what I’m saying,” the mother told the TV station.

“This is what happens when you don’t have black friends,” Loni Love said on The Real while introducing the segment.

“I have to say this because we’re on The Real,”Mowry said. “If it was the opposite, we all know that this would have never happened. They would have been like, “Oh look how cute! They adopted some black kids!”

All four panelists agreed that there should be consequences when people call the police for “dumb stuff.”

Love added, “We can’t go to a barbecue, we can’t sell lemonade, what the hell are we supposed to do? We are Americans, we pay taxes, we do our thing — leave us alone and let us live our life!”

Mom of Woman Killed in Horrific Limo Crash Alongside Boyfriend Speaks Out: ‘There’s Nothing Worse’

When she heard news about the horrific limousine accident that left 20 dead in upstate New York on Saturday afternoon, Martina Wieblitz Halse desperately tried to contact her daughter, Amanda Halse, who she knew was traveling with a large group in that same area.

Martina and her daughter, Karina Halse, repeatedly texted and called Amanda, but with each message sent and number dialed, their attempts went unanswered.

Then, their worst fears were realized when an investigator appeared at their door.

“I don’t even know what injuries she had,” Martina tells PEOPLE of finding out Amanda, 26, was in the limo when it crashed. “They told me that they took her out of the limousine and put her in an ambulance to go to the hospital and she still had a heartbeat.”

Amanda ultimately died from her injuries, which she suffered as she was celebrating her friend Amy Steenburg’s 30th birthday on October 6. The group of friends were in a limo that failed to stop at a T-intersection in the rural town of Schoharie in upstate New York. The limo flew into a nearby parking lot and crashed into an unoccupied SUV, killing the driver and all 17 passengers. The accident also claimed the lives of two pedestrians, who were struck by a parked SUV after it was slammed into by the limo.

“It’s terrible. I lost my baby. I last saw her the week before on a Saturday,” Martina says. “There’s nothing, nothing worse than this.”

RELATEDCouple Killed in Limo Crash Were ‘Amazing Parents:’ They Were Devoted to Their Kids’

Martina, who is paralyzed, says she she saw a lot of herself in her daughter, Amanda, including her love of arts and crafts. Because of Martina’s condition, Amanda would spend time helping her mother tend to the flowers in her garden. The two had initially planned to go to a fall festival on Sunday, after Amanda returned from her trip with her friends.

“She was way too young ,” Martina says through tears. “She was such a kind person, everybody loved her.”

Amanda also shared a close relationship with her siblings.

“I am hanging in there. Taking it one step at a time,” says Amanda’s sister, Karina. “I feel a sense of strength when I talk about my sister so I believe she is helping me through this, but overall, I feel empty, devastated and just sad.”

During the drive, Amanda had been accompanied by her boyfriend, Patrick Cushing, 31, who was also killed in the crash.

“Patrick was such a passionate and good-hearted person. He had such empathy and kindness,” his brother, Justin Cushing, tells PEOPLE.

Patrick was a gifted athlete and played dodgeball for Team USA, Justin says, but most of all, he deeply loved those closest to him.

“He loved, hugged and cried with his friends and family like their problems were his,” he explains. “ celebrated with those same family and friends like our successes were his personal goals.”

RELATED4 Sisters, Their Husbands, Newlyweds & Parents Among 20 Killed in Tragic Limo Crash

While he was passionate about photography and sports, Patrick was also devoted to his role as a godparent to Adam and Abigail Jackson’s two young daughters, Archer, 4, and 16-month-old Ellie.

“He took it like he was an adopted third parent,” Justin says. “He kept her pictures in his phone to show off like they were his own.”

Adam and Abigail also lost their lives in the crash, which is still under investigation. A GoFundMe page has been set up to provide for their daughters, which has raised more than $ 65,000.

With nearly two dozen people lost in the accident, the pain of the tragedy is felt far and wide. For Justin, who served as best man for Adam in his wedding to Abigail, the devastation is unimaginable.

“I lost my two best friends in this, in my brother and Adam. I lost my cousin in Erin ,” he says. “This was all so hard to write and I’m shaking knowing I’m missing something important to his life.”

Pa. Woman Called 911 on Ex-Boyfriend Moments Before She Was Stabbed to Death

A Pennsylvania woman called 911 to report her ex-boyfriend was attacking her before she was found dead with stab wounds, PEOPLE confirms.

Bensalem Police Public Safety Director Fred Harran tells PEOPLE that shortly before 7 a.m. on Monday, Teresa Priestley called 911 when William Table began attacking her after she got into her car outside her home.

About a minute later, police received a second 911 call reporting a car crash less than a quarter-mile away from the knife attack, says Harran. Officers arrived to find Priestley dead on arrival after she drove away from the site of the attack with mortal stab wounds.

The stabbing set off a 12-hour manhunt for Table, who was arrested by Philadelphia police that evening after he allegedly stabbed a homeless man, says Harran.

According to Harran, Priestley had recently broken up with Table.

“It appears they were living together prior to this, but just recently he was thrown out of the apartment and she just had her locks changed yesterday,” Harran told reporters at a Monday press conference.

Harran tells PEOPLE Priestley was about to leave for work in the morning. Police believe Table had staked out her home with the goal of attacking her.

Priestley’s neighbor Mike Angley told TV station WPVI he heard Priestley crying for help during the attack.

“I heard a woman screaming ‘help me,’ ” Angley said. “After that, tires screeched.”

Table is charged by Bensalem police with criminal homicide, kidnapping and possession of an instrument of crime, according to online records.

According to Philadelphia police, there are no current charges against Table in Philadelphia.

Table is being held without bail in the Bucks County Correctional Facility. It was not immediately clear if he has retained an attorney.

Harran tells PEOPLE that Table “is an evil person. I won’t even call him a human being. To commit such a heinous crime, and to slaughter a woman on the way to work because she no longer wants to date you? I’m not sure that person can be considered a person.”

Woman Gets 18 Years After Posing as Nurse to Kidnap Newborn and Raise the Girl as Her Own

On Friday, nearly two decades after she abducted an hours-old infant from a hospital in Florida and then raised the girl as her own, a South Carolina woman was reportedly sentenced to 18 years in prison for kidnapping — the length of time the stolen child lived away from her biological family.

“There are no winners and no losers in this case,” Judge Marianne Aho said at the sentencing hearing for 52-year-old Gloria Williams, of Walterboro, according to the Associated Press.

Williams pleaded guilty earlier this year to kidnapping and custodial interference. Under the terms of her plea deal, she could be sentenced to no more than 22 years in prison. She was ordered on Friday to serve five years concurrently for the interference charge.

Williams was sentenced in Duval County, Florida, where she kidnapped newborn Kamiyah Mobley from UF Health Jacksonville, then called University Medical Center, on July 10, 1998, while she was disguised as a nurse.

She said at a sentencing hearing last month that she smuggled Kamiyah out of the building in a bag, local TV station WJAX reported. She had not planned that day to steal a baby when — having recently miscarried — she traveled from her South Carolina home to Florida, she said: “I felt like I was on autopilot. My life was out of control, I lost everything.”

Mobley’s mother, Shanara Mobley, was 16 years old and has said she trusted Williams because the older woman spent hours getting to know her and Kamiyah.

Neither a prosecutor’s spokesman nor Mobley’s attorney immediately responded to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

• Want to keep up with the latest crime coverage? Click here to get breaking crime news, ongoing trial coverage and details of intriguing unsolved cases in the True Crime Newsletter.

The headline-making case broke open in January 2017, when authorities announced that anonymous tips led them to discover Williams raised Kamiyah in South Carolina under the name Alexis Manigo and that Kamiyah believed Williams was her biological mother.

The revelation that Kamiyah was alive and well attracted international attention, and her return came as a startling relief to her biological family.

Still, the confirmation of her life as an unwitting kidnapping victim set up a series of thorny entanglements for her and her loved ones — between those who raised her and those she had been stolen from for so long.

“It doesn’t heal now. I’m still hurting. When you’re reaching out to my child, that is my child,” Shanara said in court in May. “I am your mother, Kamiyah! I am your mother.”

• It was the scandal that rocked America’s most storied political family and changed the course of presidential history. PEOPLE‘s first-ever podcast, Cover-Up, dives into the Chappaquiddick scandal and attempts to piece together what happened in the hours after Ted Kennedy’s car went over a narrow wooden bridge, killing his passenger, Mary Jo Kopechne. Subscribe now on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Play or wherever podcasts are available.

Of her enduring heartache — each year buying a cake to mark another passing birthday for her missing daughter, Shanara said, “I always thought about my baby every day, every day, every day. I would catch myself in my car crying, in bed crying, taking a bath crying, doing something with her siblings and crying.”

While on the stand during a two-day hearing in May, Williams apologized to Kamiyah’s parents and told her, “I never meant to cause you any harm, any pain, any of that,” according to WJAX.

In the months since Williams’ arrest, Kamiyah has acknowledged the wrongfulness of what was done to her as a baby while also continuing to note that, even if she was raised by her abductor, she was raised in a loving and seemingly normal household.

“From that one mistake, I was given the best life. I was,” Kamiyah said last year. “I had everything I ever needed, wanted. I had love especially. I understand what she did was wrong, but just don’t lock her up and throw away the key like everything she did was just awful.”

Kamiyah, now 19, did not attend Friday’s sentencing but had asked for leniency for Williams, according to her attorney.

“Kamiyah is now processing what it means for the woman she’s known as mother to receive an 18-year prison sentence,” Justin Bamberg said, the Post & Courier reports. “However, she understands Gloria had to be held accountable for her actions. She also understands that her biological parents have the absolute right to view today as a joyous day.”

Kamiyah’s mother, however, had asked at least for the maximum possible term of 22 years in prison. If she had her way, Shanara said, Williams would have been put to death.

In a statement, Williams’ attorney Diana Johnson said they had “hoped for” a lighter sentence but nonetheless “appreciate the time and attention Judge Aho took to fully consider this matter,” according to ABC News.

Johnson said Williams was also thankful for “everyone involved in her defense as well as all of the people who either wrote letters or appeared on her behalf.”

Kamiyah’s father, Craig Aiken, told reporters after the sentencing that, with it resolved, “We can continue on our journey of healing together as a family and support our daughter on her decision making.”

Kamiyah’s mother did not comment after court, according to news reports, though others of her biological relatives expressed their joy.

According to the Post & Courier, Kamiyah still lives in Walterboro but spends time with her family in Jacksonville

After Friday’s hearing, her grandmother Velma Aiken reportedly said: “I can love my grandbaby as my own now.”

‘Diabolical Torture Chamber’: 2 Ex-Officers Beat Pa. Woman to Death in Front of 10-Year-Old Child

Two former Temple University police officers were convicted of beating a woman to death in 2016 in a home prosecutors described as a “degrading, diabolical torture chamber,” according to multiple reports.

On Thursday, a Philadelphia judge found Aaron Wright and Marquis Robinson guilty of third-degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder and aggravated assault in a nonjury trial in the July 2016 death of Wright’s girlfriend, 24-year-old Joyce Quaweay, NBC Philadelphia reports.

Quaweay shared a home with Wright, Robinson, his girlfriend and multiple children in Germantown, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.

The 24-year-old was stripped naked and forced to lie facedown on a weight bench in the kitchen as she was beaten for hours, according to the Inquirer.

During closing arguments, Assistant District Attorney Chesley Lightsey held a baton and said, “They were taking this, and coming over their head, and beating and beating and beating Joyce,” the Inquirer reports.

Quaweay was killed in front of one of Robinson’s four children, according to NBC. The girl, who was 10 at the time, testified in court Tuesday that on the morning of Quaweay’s murder, she woke up to the sound of the 24-year-old screaming, according to the Inquirer.

The defendants’ attorneys argued that Quaweay died of heart failure, NBC reports.

Lightsey told the station, “She ultimately died of heart failure because her heart was working so hard through the panic that she just collapsed.”

Lightsey added, “All of this was done in front of a 10-year-old child who was home at the time.”

• Want to keep up with the latest crime coverage? Click here to get breaking crime news, ongoing trial coverage and details of intriguing unsolved cases in the True Crime Newsletter.

Lightsey also said Quaweay and the female children living in the home were regularly beaten for “not following the rules,” the Inquirer reports.

Robinson was fired from Temple University after being arrested. Wright resigned in 2012 for an unknown reason, according to CBS.

PEOPLE’s phone messages for James Berardinelli, Wright’s attorney, and Gary Server, Robinson’s attorney, were not immediately returned, so it was not immediately clear if their clients plan to appeal.

Tom Brokaw Slams Woman Who Accused Him of Sexual Harassment: ‘I Am Angry, Hurt and Unmoored’

Journalist Tom Brokaw eviscerated one of the women accusing him of sexual harassment in a memo to some NBC News colleagues Friday.

The Hollywood Reporter obtained a copy of the email, in which Brokaw, 78, characterizes  Linda Vester as “a former colleague who left NBC News angry that she had failed in her pursuit of stardom.” (The Associated Press confirmed the authenticity of the memo, too.)

In a Washington Post report published on Thursday, Vester, 52, claimed Brokaw made an unwanted advance, including a forcible attempt to kiss her, on two occasions in the 1990s. At the time, Vester was in her 20s and did not file a complaint.

Want to keep up on the latest from PEOPLE? Sign

But Brokaw staunchly denies her allegations, writing, “I am angry, hurt and unmoored from what I thought would be the final passage of my life and career, a mix of written and broadcast journalism, philanthropy and participation in environmental and social causes that have always given extra meaning to my life.”

Vester, he said, “has unleashed a torrent of unsubstantiated criticism and attacks on me more than twenty years after I opened the door for her and a new job at Fox news.”

He went on to give his version of their two meetings, during which he said she discussed her career and “office gossip.”

“I deeply resent the pain and anger she inflicted on my wife, daughters and granddaughters – all women of considerable success and passion about women’s rights which they personify in their daily lives and professions,” he concluded. “We’ll go on as a family that pursues social justice in medical emergency rooms, corporate offices, social therapy, African women’s empowerment and journalism. And no one woman’s assault can take that away.”

In a separate memo,  NBC News chairman Andy Lack told the staff, “We take allegations such as these very seriously, and act on them quickly and decisively when the facts dictate.”

An American woman has been jailed in Zimbabwe over allegedly posting a mean tweet about Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe, according to multiple reports.

The Washington Post reported that on Friday, 25-year-old New York University graduate Martha O’Donovan — who had lived in Zimbabwe since 2016 and worked at a local satirical comedy station — has been charged with subversion and attempting to overthrow the Mugabe government.

According to court documents released by the group Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights, CNN reported that Zimbabwe authorities traced a tweet which said “we are being led by a selfish & sick man” and suggested Mugabe wore a catheter to O’Donovan’s IP address.

“I deny the allegations being leveled against me as baseless and malicious,” CNN reported O’Donovan said, according to court papers. “That is all I wish to say.”

Both The Washington Post and the Associated Press reported that police said the tweet was sent from an account with the handle @matigary.

Woman Killed by Husband at Football Party Shooting Left Him Because of His Drinking: Friend

Meredith Hight, the Texas woman whose estranged husband fatally shot her Sunday along with seven other people during a football watching party at her Plano residence before being fatally shot by police, left the man because of his drinking, a friend tells PEOPLE.

“She me that Spencer had an alcohol problem and she wanted him to go to rehab but she couldn’t get him to,” Meredith’s friend and hairdresser, Adriana Vaga, tells PEOPLE. “She told me that a doctor said if he would not stop drinking in a year he would die.”

In July, Meredith filed for divorce from her husband of six years, according to Collin County court records. Vaga says her friend realized she had to take care of herself first.

“I told her to do what was best for her so she could move on with her life, because I didn’t want her to feel trapped in this marriage that she didn’t have to stay in,” she says.

According to Meredith’s mother, Spencer was having trouble moving on from the separation.

On Sunday night, Meredith, 27, who was hosting a cookout and football watching party, was fatally shot along with seven of her friends.

Police arrived at the scene and fatally shot Spencer.

Besides Meredith, the deceased victims have been identified as Anthony Michael Cross, 33; Olivia Nicole Deffner, 24; James Richard Dunlop, 29; Darryl William Hawkins, 22; Rion Christopher Morgan, 31; Myah Sade Bass, 28; and 25-year-old Caleb Seth Edwards.

Vaga met the Hights six years ago through a friend, she says. Immediately, she and Meredith hit it off, while Spencer, she recalls, was distant.

“Spencer never talked to me very much but it was kind of weird. I tried talking to him but he kept to himself. I think he was very detached,” Vaga says.

Vaga says when she met Meredith, the couple, who wed in May 2011, were newly married and seemed very much in love. However, things became strained when Spencer was laid off from his job in 2013 and began drinking excessively, Meredith told Vaga.

Meredith, who worked at home for Coca Cola Industries, tried to remain positive but found it difficult because of Spencer’s negativity.

After a few years of trying to make it work, Meredith decided to separate from Spencer, who spent most of his time playing video games or building cigar box ukuleles to sell.

• PEOPLE’s special edition True Crime Stories: 35 Real Cases That Inspired the Show Law & Order is on sale now.

Newly single, Meredith was able to host parties like she had done when she first was married, Vaga says.

“She just had a really positive energy,” Vaga says. “He would hold her back from doing so many . She was being a free spirit.”

The cookout and party Meredith hosted on Sunday was the first party she had hosted since her separation, says Vaga, who was invited but had to work.

Despite everything the couple had been through, Vaga says she knows Meredith was having a hard time with the divorce.

“That had to be hard for her, whether or not she was excited , it was hard. She loved him,” Vaga says.

Spencer’s father, Chester Hight, said his family is devastated by the shooting — grieving the deaths of his son, daughter-in-law and those killed at the party.

“I’m so sorry,” Chester said, according to CBS News. He told the Dallas Morning News, the family is living a “nightmare.”

Vaga says, “I just don’t think anyone deserves to go that way. I don’t understand it and probably none of us ever will.”

Meredith and Spencer’s families could not be reached for comment.

Ariz. Woman Sentenced to Die for Her Role in Locking Girl, 10, in 3-Foot-Long Container

An Arizona woman was sentenced to death on Monday for her role in the 2011 murder of her 10-year-old cousin, who suffocated after she was padlocked overnight in a small plastic storage container in the sweltering heat, PEOPLE confirms.

With the jury’s decision, 29-year-old Sammantha Allen becomes the third woman on Arizona’s death row.

She was found guilty of first-degree murder and four counts of child abuse on June 26 in the killing of Ame Deal — who, authorities reportedly said, was forced to exercise in triple-digit summer temperatures and then locked in a 32-inch-long plastic box overnight, likely as punishment because she stole an ice pop.

Ame died from suffocation after being left in the box for six or seven hours.

“Lack of remorse was the biggest thing that played into it for us — that we didn’t see that from Sammantha throughout the whole process,” said juror Anne Schaad, according to the Associated Press and CBS News.

Allen’s defense attorney could not be reached for comment by PEOPLE.

“I want to thank the members of the jury for their time and effort on this case and reaching a difficult, but just conclusion for the senseless murder of Ame,” Maricopa County, Arizona, Attorney Bill Montgomery said in a statement.

The case came to light on July 12, 2011, when police were called to Ame’s home in Phoenix and found her dead inside a plastic storage box. Family members initially said that she liked to hide in the box and must have fallen asleep, according to prosecutors.

Under questioning, Allen told police she knew the girl had been left in the container, the Arizona Republic reports. “There never was intention on killing her,” she said. But she said that her husband, John Allen, “said he was going to get her out.”

In video of her questioning shown at at her trial, however, Sammantha told a detective that she knew Ame was still in the container when she went to sleep, according to the Republic.

Authorities believe Sammantha and John were responsible for forcing Ame into the box and had fallen asleep without letting her out.

Before she was padlocked inside the box, John allegedly forced Ame to do back-bends for two hours and run around the yard despite the searing 103-degree temperature, the Republic reports.

Authorities said Ame was routinely locked inside the plastic box and abused by her caretakers. In one instance, the young girl was forced to eat dog feces and had it rubbed in her face after she failed to pick up a dog’s dropping, according to the Republic.

She was also allegedly made to crush aluminum cans barefoot, eat hot sauce and had been kicked in the face, beaten with a paddle and tossed into a cold swimming pool, according to the AP and CBS News.

Sammantha was sentenced to 76 years for four counts of child abuse, on top of her death sentence.

The AP reported that authorities had found Ame was a unique target of scorn in her family.

“Several forensic interviews were conducted on relative children,” investigators wrote in court records obtained by the news outlet. “The common theme is, Ame is bad, Ame lies, Ame steals, Ame is not allowed to play.”

Ame’s father, David, was sentenced in June 2013 to 14 years in prison for attempted child-abuse for his role in Ame’s torment.

Her grandmother, Judith, was sentenced in September 2013 to 10 years in prison and lifetime probation after pleading guilty to two counts of attempted child abuse.

Cynthia Stoltzmann, who was Ame’s legal guardian and aunt, was sentenced to 24 years in prison and lifetime probation in September 2013 after pleading guilty to two counts of child abuse and one count of attempted child abuse.

John Allen, who is also charged with murder and child abuse, is scheduled to go to trial on Oct 9. He has pleaded not guilty. A message left with his attorney was not returned.

Fla. Woman Caught on Camera Asking Man to Kill Husband Gets 16 Years, But Lawyer Claims it Was Reality TV Stunt

A Florida woman accused of hiring a hit man to kill her husband in 2009 has been sentenced to 16 years in prison — but her attorney tells PEOPLE his client will appeal the case.

Dalia Dippolito was convicted last month of solicitation of first-degree murder. According to prosecutors, she was recorded on video and audio as she plotted to have Michael Dippolito killed. During her trial, jurors heard her telling an undercover detective she was “5,000 percent sure” she wanted her husband dead.

Circuit Judge Glenn Kelley imposed the sentence on Dippolito, saying that she had acted in a “cold and calculated manner.”

No money ever changed hands between Dippolito and the undercover detective, and Michael Dippolito was unharmed.

Dippolito has maintained that she never intended to go through with the murder-for-hire plot. Her attorneys say the recordings were part of a video project that she was doing along with Michael and her former lover so that the trio could land a reality TV show.

Dippolito’s attorney, Brian Claypool, told jurors that officers with the Boynton Beach Police Department failed to properly investigate the situation because they were eager to capture video footage for the TV show Cops.

Dippolito remains hopeful her conviction will be overturned on appeal, Claypool tells PEOPLE. A 2011 conviction was thrown out on appeal. A retrial last fall ended with a 3-3 hung jury.

• Want to keep up with the latest crime coverage? Click here to get breaking crime news, ongoing trial coverage and details of intriguing unsolved cases in the True Crime Newsletter.

“She’s doing surprisingly well, considering,” Claypool says. “She is clinging to her faith during this time.”

Claypool tells PEOPLE that Dippolito’s team has several avenues for appeal.

Throughout the trial, Claypool alerted the judge that one of the jurors was allegedly falling asleep. “She was almost snoring,” he says. “We made two trial complaints on the record, and submitted five affidavits from people who saw her sleeping. Florida caselaw is clear that this is grounds for a new trial.”

If that doesn’t work, the defense will appeal on the grounds that X-rated text messages between Dippolito and her lover — who has since died — were prejudicial hearsay and should not have been read to the jury. Claypool also says that jurors heard unsubstantiated allegations that Dippolito had once tried to kill her husband with antifreeze, and that she had previously tried to hire another hitman.

“There are several grounds for appeal,” says Claypool, “and we intend to pursue them all. My client is not perfect, but she is a mother who didn’t do what they said she did. A lot of the evidence that was introduced was not only irrelevant, but it was extremely prejudicial.”

Prosecutors did not return PEOPLE’s calls for comment.

Woman Sentenced for Helping Her Husband Rape 2 Children: ‘Disgusting and Horrendous’ Acts

A woman who helped put her husband behind bars for raping two children in Pennsylvania was sentenced on Monday to five to 15 years for also participating in the sexual assaults, PEOPLE confirms.

Holly Greiner, 31, will be on probation for 15 years after her prison stint, court officials tell PEOPLE. She pleaded guilty in April to two counts of involuntary deviate sexual intercourse with a child. She had the child rape charges against her dismissed after negotiating a plea deal with the prosecution.

Soon after her arrest, Greiner admitted to police that she and her husband forced two children to perform sex acts on each other and with them.

She agreed to assist prosecutors by testifying against her husband, 29-year-old Robert Phillip Greiner, at his trial. He was convicted in November of 11 counts including rape of a child, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, aggravated indecent assault, endangering the welfare of a child and corruption of minors

In February he received what will likely amount to a life sentence, with a minimum of 67-and-a-quarter years behind bars.

He was also found guilty of evidence tampering and witness intimidation — charges that were filed after he made calls to his wife from prison pestering her about recanting her statements to police and pressuring her not to testify at his trial.

• Want to keep up with the latest crime coverage? Click here to get breaking crime news, ongoing trial coverage and details of intriguing unsolved cases in the True Crime Newsletter.

The couple was arrested in 2015 after a 10-year-old boy told police in West Manheim Township, Pennsylvania, that he and a 5-year-old girl were sexually abused over a six-month period, court officials confirm.

Both victims testified during last fall’s trial, which prosecutors contend helped them secure the conviction.

PEOPLE could not reach the prosecutor, Chuck Murphy, for comment. He told the York Dispatch that the female victim said she was happy to help put her abusers away.

“She said because she didn’t want to have bad dreams about it anymore,” Murphy told the paper, which reports that a family member said in court the girl has not had any bad dreams about Greiner since the trial.

“Without their courage in coming forward, we couldn’t have made sure this guy can’t do it to anyone else,” he said, noting that “there’s no minimizing how disgusting and horrendous these acts were.”

PEOPLE was unable to reach the Greiners’ attorneys for comment.

101-Year-Old Woman Breaks 100-Meter Record for Her Age Group — and Only Started Racing Last Year

The number that matters the most to 101-year-old Julia “Hurricane” Hawkins is not her age, but her race time.

Hawkins, a former schoolteacher hailing from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, won the 100-meter dash in a blazing 40.12 seconds at the USA Track and Field Outdoors Masters Championships this weekend, according to the Washington Post.

Her time is a world record for women aged 100 and over, pending its verification in December. As of now, that’s six seconds faster than the current certified record.

Hawkins quipped of her victory, “I missed my nap for this.”

But that’s not all.

Earlier this month, Hawkins participated in the 30th annual National Senior Games in Birmingham, Alabama, and ran the 100-meter dash in 39.62 seconds. You’re reading that right — that’s a faster time than the one she earned this weekend. That means, pending the verification, she has two chances to hold on to the record.

“I came to run, and that’s what I did,” a proud Hawkins told the NSGA after her 39-second race.

Proving that it’s never too late to start anew, Hawkins only started her track and field career last year at age 100. But that doesn’t mean she hasn’t been an active person for a long time.

According to The Advocate in Baton RougeHawkins is a longtime bicyclist (she rides everyday) and was on a bike when first competed in the National Senior Games when she was 75. Hawkins says she gave up after the National Senior Games in 2001 when there was a lack of female competition. But, she was persuaded to compete in last year’s Louisiana State Games by her children, and that is what led to her record-breaking performances.

RELATED VIDEO: Watch This 90-Year-Old Grandfather Serenade His Wife for 70th Anniversary: ‘She’s the Only One’

Today, she practices the 100-meter in her neighborhood, she told WBRZ. When she’s not on her bike or running the dash, she likes to take care of the house, tend to her bonsai trees, and engage in her primary workout: running from the garden to answer the phone when it rings.

Hawkins likes to live simply, and she says her secret to a long life is as easy as eating healthy, exercising, and family.

Oh, and one more thing:

“I tell people the thing I recommend is to marry a good man,” Hawkins explained. “If you marry to a man for 70 years and have four wonderful children and then you have great grandchildren. You can’t ask much more than that.”

Crown Worn by Ariana Grande for ‘Dangerous Woman’ Publicity to Be Auctioned by Private Collector

CROWNING MOMENTS: Ariana Grande’s One Love Manchester benefit concert was an all-out charitable effort, but the private collector who has put the crown that she wore to promote her “Dangerous Woman” album up for auction has taken another route.
A spokesman for Nate D. Sanders Auctions said the item was consigned before the Manchester attack and the proceeds will not be donated to charity. The bidding is set to start Thursday at $ 5,000. Mary Collins of Vauje jewelry, who designed the headpiece with handset rhinestones near its spikes said she sold it last year. That private collector has since consigned it to the auction house, the spokesman said.
Collins did not respond immediately Monday to a request for comment.
Last month 22 people were killed and 119 were injured after a terrorist bomb exploded in Manchester Arena immediately after Grande’s “Dangerous Women” concert tour. After initially postponing the U.K. leg of her tour, the 23-year-old musician helped organize the One Love Manchester concert and returned to Manchester a few weeks later. Held in the city’s Old Trafford cricket ground, the concert featured Justin Bieber, Coldplay and Katy Perry. The event helped raise more than $ 12.7 million for the victims and their families, according to

Theater Gives Out World’s Most Tone-Deaf Gift Bags At ‘Wonder Woman’ Screening

A movie theater in Belgium is under fire for handing out diet pill pamphlets and sponges to women who went to see “Wonder Woman.”

Every month a Kinepolis theater in Leuven, Belgium has a “ladies at the movies” night where the theater screens movies for only women. (Kinepolis is a chain of movie theaters in Belgium, similar to AMC Loews or Regal Entertainment in the U.S.) For every screening, the theater hands out small gift bags for the female viewers. Unfortunately, the gift bag for Kinepolis’ latest ladies night was completely tone-deaf.

According to Mashable and Belgian News Outlet VRT, on June 6 Kinepolis held a ladies night screening of box office hit “Wonder Woman.” The goodie bags given out that night included diet pill pamphlets, and cleaning products such as a dish sponge and a squeegee.

Some of the women at the screening were not too pleased with the contents of said goodie bags ― especially given that “Wonder Woman” is a superhero film about female strength that largely challenges gender stereotypes.

Twitter user Laurent Delbar tweeted a photo of the goodie bag and wrote: “@Kinepolis exclusive goodiebag at ladies at the movies. A sponge, brush and a squeegee. Perfect tools for a Wonder Woman?”

Another Twitter user named Mattias De Vuyst tweeted a photo of the goodie bag that a female friend had received at the screening.

“Content of goodiebag @Kinepolis after ladies night WonderWoman,” he wrote. “If someone gave this to a friend of mine or my girlfriend, I’d be furious!”

Diana Goodwin went to the all-female screening and told VRT that the gift bag “felt a bit absurd.” “Especially since you’re watching a movie that is completely about a strong female superhero,” Goodwin added.

The movie theater recognized its error, telling VRT that the gift bags were not meant to be offensive.

“The goodie bags are filled with products we are offered by our sponsors,” the theater said in a statement to VRT. “It’s random. So it’s possible that there’s a sponge in it, but this was definitely not done on purpose, we don’t chose these products ourselves. It definitely wasn’t the intention to appear inconsiderate to women.”

Another Victory For ‘Wonder Woman’ As ‘The Mummy’ Gets Buried At The Box Office

“The Mummy” is no match for “Wonder Woman.”

During its first weekend in theaters, the Tom Cruise monster movie debuted at No. 2, earning a tepid $ 32 million in North American grosses. “Wonder Woman” retained the top spot, collecting an impressive $ 57.2 million.

That “Wonder Woman” figure is especially noteworthy because superhero flicks tend to see steep declines ― about 60 percent ― during their second weekend in theaters, once the most faithful fanboys and -girls have already scurried to the multiplexes. The first major comic-book adaptation directed by a woman, Patty Jenkins’ film fell by only 45 percent, the least of any modern superhero movie.

“Woman” has now accrued about $ 205 million domestically and another $ 230.2 from foreign markets.

This weekend’s tallies are as much a victory for “Wonder Woman” as they are a defeat for the critically derided “Mummy.” Other recent big-screen iterations of the character ― 1999’s “The Mummy” (starring Brendan Fraser), 2001’s “The Mummy Returns,” 2002’s “The Scorpion King” and 2008’s “The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor” ― premiered to heftier sums.

Universal Pictures has a lot riding on this latest reboot, as it is meant to launch the Dark Universe, an expensive franchise that’s slated to span several movies. Stateside audiences were largely uninterested in the inaugural installment, putting the Dark Universe in a precarious position. That said, major studios often rely on international grosses to support tentpole releases nowadays, and this weekend’s $ 141.8 million in overseas revenue means Universal can, on some level, ignore domestic patrons’ ambivalence.

Holdovers “Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie” ($ 12.3 million), “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” ($ 10.7 million) and “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” ($ 6.2 million) round out the Top 5.

Another winner: “It Comes at Night,” a low-budget horror film that trendy indie studio A24 released nationwide. The post-apocalyptic chiller collected $ 6 million, a decent total for a low-budget title costing $ 5 million.

“Baywatch” ($ 4.6 million), “Megan Leavey” ($ 3.8 million), “Alien: Covenant” ($ 1.8 million) and “Everything, Everything” ($ 1.6 million) complete the Top 10.

Not even Tom Cruise can save “The Mummy” from box office necrosis. Fox News Mulls Over Whether Wonder Woman Is ‘American’ Enough

As “Wonder Woman” garners stellar ratings and remains on track for a record-breaking opening weekend, a Fox News panel is conducting a deep dive into a critical matter: Is the Amazonian princess American enough?

Fox host Neil Cavuto noted on Friday to guest Dion Baia that “some” have been taking issue with the film’s alleged lack of patriotism — chiefly, that the superhero’s costume color scheme is too un-American.

“Some are calling it less American, Dion, because, well, her outfit isn’t red, white, and blue, and, in order to appeal for foreign audiences, very little reference to America at all,” said the “Your World With Neil Cavuto” host.

“I think, nowadays, sadly, money trumps patriotism,” Baia replied. “Especially, recently, I personally feel like we’re not really very patriotic, the country, in a certain sense. And they want these movies to succeed internationally, you know, so they’re going to dial back.”

Fellow guest Mike Gunzelman lamented that he feels “it’s cool to hate America these days.”

Baia, for his part, said his comments have been misconstrued. “Taken outta context much?” he tweeted Saturday, referencing an Entertainment Weekly article that characterized him as being “upset” with the movie (probably because he used the word “sadly.”)

He maintained he was simply explaining why he believes the movie’s American patriotism was “toned down.”

But in any case, criticism of Gadot’s costume as not looking “American” is a little weak.

A red, blue and gold color combination is still fairly reminiscent of the American flag. Gold is often incorporated into patriotic decorations and accessories, and sometimes used in place of white.

The original comic and Lynda Carter’s iconic Wonder Woman costume from the 1970s TV series both included more gold than white.

Yes, Gadot’s Wonder Woman is not wearing a bottom piece adorned with little white stars, but she is wearing a top with an emblem of an eagle, which is, you know, a major symbol for the United States.

Plus, the actual plot of the movie involves Wonder Woman teaming up with an American pilot to stop German forces, which makes equating it with “hating America” a bit of a stretch.

Whatever. There have been worse takes on the movie.

Lebanon Bans ‘Wonder Woman’ Screenings Because Of Israeli Star Gal Gadot

Despite its positive early reviews, and high rating on Rotten Tomatoes, people living in Lebanon won’t be able to see “Wonder Woman” in their theaters anytime soon.

The film, starring Israel-born actress Gal Gadot, has officially been banned from screenings in the country, which is in a conflict with Israel, The Guardian reports. Gadot served in the Israeli Defense Force for two years and has publicly expressed support for the IDF.

Just hours before the ban went into effect, “Wonder Woman” was scheduled to premiere in Lebanon. Grand Cinemas, a Lebanese theater chain, announced the ban with a post on Twitter.

“Wonder Woman” passed Lebanon’s screening procedures, The Guardian notes, but the government reportedly responded to pressure from the Campaign to Boycott Supporters of Israel-Lebanon to ban what they called “the Israeli Soldier film.”

Interestingly, Gadot’s “Fast and Furious” films, as well as “Batman v Superman,” have screened in Lebanon, though The Campaign tried to have the latter banned. Films starring fellow Israel-born star Natalie Portman have also screened in Lebanon.

“Wonder Woman” found itself in the middle of another controversy earlier this week when the Austin branch of the Alamo Drafthouse movie theater chain announced a women-only screening. Naturally, men responded with outrage.

Despite the ban and controversy over the woman-only screening, Warner Bros. is expecting “Wonder Woman” to make a whopping $ 175 million debut at the box office. As of right now, the film also has a 95 percent rating (down from 96) on Rotten Tomatoes, putting it ahead of Marvel films like “Iron Man,” “The Avengers” and “Guardians of the Galaxy.”

This Woman Shared A Video Of Herself ‘Jiggling For Joy’ For The Best Reason

Kate Speer wanted to let out a little jiggle ― so she did.

On May 24, the body positive and mental health advocate posted a video on Instagram which shows herself dancing around ― or as she calls it in the video “jiggling for joy” ― in a bikini and a neon visor.

“Woooo! It’s hump day and I’m doing a jiggle for joy!” Speer yells as she jumps into frame. “This is your weekly reminder that… you are fabulous.”

In the caption, Speer wrote:

I’ve been struggling with my beautiful bod this week (and note, I know I have a thin-privileged, able-privileged, beautiful bod even if I can’t always feel it to be so) and beating it up in my mind and trying to suffocate it with binging.

So, today, I’m posting this even though it is terrifying me to do so (yup, deleted it 7 times).

… My body is MORE than its appearance. My body is NOT my value. My body is simply the vessel for my god damn fabulous self. And no matter what my emotional mind thinks or others say, MY BODY IS PERFECT. MY BODY IS WHOLE. MY BODY IS BEAUTIFUL. AND, MY BODY – IN ITS ENTIRETY- IS WORTHY OF LOVE.

According to Speer’s personal website, she survived a misdiagnosis of bipolar disorder at age 21 and has been in and out of psychiatric hospitals. She’s struggled with self-harm, suicide, PTSD and an eating disorder her entire life.

“I am here to dance away my PTSD demons, find light in the darkness and celebrate it all no matter if it makes sense or not,” Speer wrote on her website. “Mostly, I am here to love, get silly, find gratitude and spread as much light as I can while still on this planet I have the privilege to call home.”

Sofia Coppola Becomes Second Woman To Win Cannes Film Festival’s Directing Prize

Ending a 56-year gap, Sofia Coppola became the second woman to receive the Best Director award at the Cannes Film Festival as the gala wrapped up on Sunday.

Russian Yuliya Solntseva won for “The Story of the Flaming Years” in 1961. Coppola was honored for “The Beguiled,” a Southern Gothic horror that updates the 1971 Civil War drama starring Clint Eastwood. Three of the director’s previous features ― “The Virgin Suicides,” “Marie Antoinette” and “The Bling Ring” ― also competed at Cannes.

“I was thrilled to get this movie made and it’s such an exciting start to be honored in Cannes,” Coppola said in a statement.

Along with praising “my great team and cast,” she thanked Universal Studios and one of its speciality divisions, Focus Features, “for their support of women-driven films.”

Nicole Kidman, a star of “The Beguiled” and three other Cannes selections, received a special prize marking the French festival’s 70th anniversary.

The coveted Palme d’Or, one of filmmaking’s most lauded honors, went to “The Square,” a surprising choice for a festival that typically favors intense dramas. “The Square” is a farce about an art museum staging a radical exhibition that sparks a social crisis.

Pedro Almódovar, the acclaimed director of “Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown” and “Talk to Her,” headed this year’s jury, which also included Will Smith, Jessica Chastain, Chinese actress Fan Bingbing, South Korean director Park Chan-wook and Italian director Paolo Sorrentino.

Here’s the full list of winners. Many of the hits at Cannes factor into the Oscar race.

Palme d’Or: “The Square,” a Swedish art-world satire directed by Ruben Östlund

Grand Prix: “120 Beats Per Minute,” an AIDS drama directed by Robin Campillo

Jury Prize: “Loveless,” a Russian missing-child drama directed by Andrey Zvyagintsev

Best Actress: Diane Kruger, “In the Fade”

Best Actor: Joaquin Phoenix, “You Were Never Really Here”

Best Director: Sofia Coppola, “The Beguiled”

Best Screenplay: a tie between “You Were Never Really Here” (written by Lynne Ramsay) and “The Killing of a Sacred Deer” (written by Yorgos Lanthimos and Efthymis Filippou)

Camera d’Or, honoring the best debut feature: “Jeune Femme,” directed by Léonor Sérraille

Best Short Film: “A Gentle Night,” directed by Qiu Yang

70th Anniversary Prize: Nicole Kidman, who starred in four Cannes titles (”The Beguiled,” “The Killing of a Sacred Deer,” “How to Talk to Girls at Parties” and “Top of the Lake: China Girl”)

Conan Trains With ‘Wonder Woman’ Gal Gadot And Does Not Fare Well

There is only one warrior Conan, and he was played by Arnold Schwarzenegger in the 1980s. Unfortunately for the late-night host of the same name, there is not the same level of fear struck in the hearts of opponents when they hear the name Conan O’Brien.

So you can imagine that Wonder Woman Gal Gadot felt pretty confident going into a training session with Coco.

This Woman Wore Her Engagement Ring For A Year Without Even Knowing It

One unsuspecting woman was wearing her engagement ring for over a year without even realizing it.

How exactly is this possible, you might ask? It all started when an Australian man named Terry made his girlfriend Anna a necklace out of Huon pine ― a wood native to Tasmania  ― for their one-year anniversary in 2015. Unbeknownst to Anna, Terry had hidden an engagement ring inside the necklace.

For a year and a half, Anna wore that necklace almost every day without knowing there was anything, let alone an engagement ring, inside.

During a trip to Smoo Cave in northern Scotland in November 2016, Terry was finally ready to pop the question and to reveal the big surprise.

“I picked Smoo Cave because it was a place we had talked about visiting since we first met, and ‘smoo’ comes from an old Norse word for ‘hiding place,’ so I think I get extra points for that one,” Terry told HuffPost.

Just before the proposal, Terry asked Anna for the necklace, telling her he was going to take a nice photo of it propped up on some rocks.

That’s when he grabbed a knife to secretly break a seal he had placed on the piece of jewelry.

He told Anna, “Oh, I forgot to give you your necklace back,” pulled the jewelry from his pocket, got down on one knee and cracked it open while asking her to marry him.

“She stood there with this completely confused and dumbfounded look on her face, and when she finally worked out what had just happened, she yelled, ‘Yes!’ and pounced on me,” he told HuffPost.

“It actually took her a couple of moments to understand that the ring had been in the necklace the entire time since I gave it to her,” he continued. “She flipped out ― ‘Wait, it’s been in there the entire time?! I could have lost it, you f**king idiot!’, which was a hilarious mix of happy and angry.”

The couple is saving up to buy a home and hopes that they will someday be able to host their wedding at the house.

“We are hoping to buy a house with land so we can have the wedding at home with our friends and family, in a very relaxed fashion that we think matches us ― rather than having a gigantic, glamorous wedding, which isn’t like us at all,” Terry said.

We can’t wait to see what fun wedding surprises Terry has up his sleeve.

Drake Rep Slams Former Porn Star’s Paternity Accusation: ‘She’s Just Another Woman Claiming He Got Them Pregnant’

Drake is hitting back at accusations from former porn star Sophie Brussaux, who claims she is pregnant with his child.

Brussaux—who was spotted with the rapper, 30, in January following his split from Jennifer Lopez—has hired two major New York City attorneys to begin the proceedings to prove paternity and seek child support, TMZ reports.

The site says Brussaux claims she is three and-a-half months pregnant, and believes the conception occurred at the end of January. A photo of the pair together in Amsterdam was taken on Jan. 24.

“If it’s in fact Drake’s child, which he does not believe it is, he will do right by the child,” Drake’s rep tells PEOPLE. “She’s just another woman in a long line of women claiming he got them pregnant.”

FROM COINAGE: What Is the Grammy Bounce? (No, It’s Not a Dance Move)

Brussaux also claims to have texts, purportedly from Drake, urging her to undergo an abortion. A rep for Drake tells PEOPLE that they have not seen the message and cannot comment on its veracity.

Brussaux didn’t immediately return PEOPLE’s request for comment.

Woman Takes Engagement Photos With Her One True Love: Popeyes Chicken

When it comes to being engaged, Elyse Chelsea Clark is throwing caution to the wind, er, wing.

The New Orleans bartender is such a fan of Popeyes Chicken that she decided to do a series of engagement photos with her favorite fast food.

Then she posted the poultry-centered pics on Facebook with this note: “I’m finally engaged!”

The Popeyes engagement pics taken by photographer Whitney Tucker show Clark looking romantically at chicken boxes…

Strolling through the park with the object of her affection …

And smooching that box with the same passion that is typically reserved for love’s kiss.

Oh, and she likes the biscuits too.

The photos might be funny, but Clark’s passion for Popeyes is real and true.

“I have a really big love for Popeyes,” she told the New Orleans Times-Picayne. “I eat it all the time.”

The chain responded to Clark’s engagement spread with this tweet.

Bill O’Reilly On Chopping Block Amid Claim He Called Black Woman ‘Hot Chocolate’

What once seemed unimaginable now seems at least possible.

New York Magazine’s Gabriel Sherman reported Tuesday that the Murdoch family is “leaning” toward pulling Bill O’Reilly off of Fox News’ airwaves in the middle of growing pressure from advertisers and activist groups.

The report comes amid a separate claim by attorney Lisa Bloom that O’Reilly used to call a black woman who worked as a clerical worker at Fox News “hot chocolate” during her time at the network in 2008. The television host would reportedly make her feel uncomfortable in other ways as well.

“He would never talk to her, not even hello, except to grunt at her like a wild boar,” Bloom told The Hollywood Reporter. “He would leer at her. He would always do this when no one else was around and she was scared.”

Bloom, who said she verified the woman’s story with three witnesses, claims the woman feared she would lose her job if she complained at the time. She added that the woman wants no money, but has registered a complaint with the Fox News hotline in light of recent news about the host ― a service that apparently many female employees at the network only recently came to learn about.

O’Reilly, who remains cable news’ most dominant figure, went on vacation last week as advertisers dropped him by the dozens following a New York Times investigation that revealed the Fox News Network and the host had paid at least $ 13 million to settle five claims of sexual harassment.

More claims have continued to surface about the host’s actions ― some of them from the most unlikely of sources.

At least 70 advertisers have decided to no longer advertise on “The O’Reilly Factor,” which remains Fox News’ biggest show by far. But “O’Reilly Factor” viewers remain committed to their host. A recent HuffPost/YouGov poll found that 65 percent of people who watch the show still hold a favorable view of him, and only 9 percent of his Republican viewers think the show should be canceled.

The show’s ratings also dropped 26 percent in the first three days he was gone, further proof of O’Reilly’s influence, both nationally and internally at Fox News.

Sherman reports that James Murdoch and Lachlan Murdoch have been arguing to their father, Rupert, that the network must rid itself of O’Reilly, but Rupert remains unsure, not wanting to appear to be bowing to outside pressure from outlets like The New York Times.

But on Tuesday, even Matt Drudge of The Drudge Report couldn’t help but think that O’Reilly’s days might be numbered.

Pregnant Syrian-American Woman Debuts Fire Rap Video ‘Hijabi’

Mona Haydar is launching her music career in a big way.

On Monday, Haydar, a Syrian-American poet and artist, debuted “Hijabi,” her first rap music video ― which she filmed when she was eight months pregnant. The video’s style is reminiscent of Beyoncé’s visual album “Lemonade,” and Muslim women in particular may find it just as empowering.

Consider its opening lyrics:

What that hair look like? Bet that hair look nice. Don’t that make you sweat? Don’t that feel too tight?

Yo, what your hair look like? Bet your hair look nice. How long your hair is?

You need to get your life.

Haydar’s song isn’t just an anthem for Muslim women. It’s an ode to diversity and a clapback to the haters who reject it.

“Given our current administration’s insistence on demonizing and maligning the bodies of women and Muslims, among others, I wanted to get this song out as soon as possible,” Haydar, who now lives in New York, told The Huffington Post. “I hoped that a pregnant woman who is obviously Muslim [and] creating art and speaking truth would inspire people and offer some levity, joy and hope.”

After “Hijabi” debuted Monday, many people became instant fans.

For Haydar, hip-hop and Islam are intertwined.

She grew up in Flint, Michigan, listening to the likes of Mos Def, A Tribe Called Quest and Rakim ― hip-hop artists and groups with members who, as she pointed out, have identified as Muslim. (Q-Tip from A Tribe Called Quest practices Islam and often discusses his faith during interviews.)

“The immigrant Muslim community owes so much to the black community, which has been here, practicing Islam, since the time when Africans were kidnapped and enslaved here in America,” Haydar told HuffPost.

“You cannot separate Islam from blackness or blackness from hip-hop or hip-hop from Islam,” she added.

Haydar is grateful for black American Islam and its contributions to hip-hop. “What a blessing it is to me that I can even be a small part of a great legacy in creating culture,” she said.

Last year, Haydar and her husband, who is a white American Muslim, made headlines when they hosted public “Ask A Muslim” booths, compete with free doughnuts, in response to Islamophobia after terrorist attacks in Paris and San Bernardino, California.

Her latest song is a similar attempt to bring about a positive discussion of diversity and acceptance.

“I want to be able to inspire young girls and let them know that they can look and dress any way they want to and still be relevant and current,” she told HuffPost.

Not everyone, however, has welcomed her efforts.

Haydar says that more conservative Muslims have reached out to her and dismissed her music as “haram,” or forbidden. Those people, she says, believe that women shouldn’t sing or perform. However, that’s not what Haydar believes.

Some people on Twitter have even called her music cringe-worthy, while others have accused her of cultural appropriation.

Haydar maintains that hip-hop has always been a part of her life.

“The cultural language I was brought up in, and my first real love, was hip-hop,” she told HuffPost. “I didn’t choose to fuse hip-hop with my faith. It is simply how my heart is expressing itself.”

As for the Muslims who believe her music is forbidden by their faith, Haydar believes they will eventually come around ― and she sends them her love.

“I’ve studied [Islam]. I’m not a kid rushing into my art. I’m a grown woman who believes that art can change the world,” she said. “I’m not worried about the haters.”

“They’ll get on board eventually and I will welcome them with all my love when they do,” she added. “In the meantime, I still love them dearly.”

The Wonder Woman Footage We Saw Looked Good

Warner Bros. showed attendees at Wednesday’s CinemaCon never-before-seen footage from the DC superhero’s solo film, opening in June.

Director Patty Jenkins and cast member Chris Pine were on hand to present close to ten minutes of footage to the National Association of Theater Owners. (Gal Gadot was overseas, having just recently given birth, but she sent a pre-recorded greeting.)

Four scenes were shown, the first two being a boat journey sequence followed by an action scene in London and then a major battle set-piece set in World War I Belgium.

Check out the slideshow below for our breakdown of the footage (be mindful of some SPOILERS):

Judging from the footage screened at CinemaCon, Wonder Woman looks pretty good. The scenes provided an overview of the look and tone of the film, Diana’s (Gal Gadot) personality, her relationship with Steve Trevor (Pine), and her journey from innocence to the more world-weary warrior we meet in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

Lady Gaga: Gay Men ‘Helped Me Become A Woman’

Lady Gaga delivered a poignant and passionate monologue during her “RuPaul’s Drag Race” appearance this week about her relationship with the LGBTQ community and the significant role gay men have played in her life.

The moment happened during the first “Untucked” of this ninth season of “Drag Race,” the weekly behind-the-scenes web series that airs the day after the show’s Friday night episodes. Just after the 15:00 mark, Los Angeles-based contestant Valentina thanked Gaga for what she’s done “for the gay community” over the years.

The singer responded by talking about not only her own identity and how it relates to the LGBTQ community, but also the ways gay people have impacted her throughout her career.

I’m not a gay woman, you know? And [it’s] that touchy sort of subject where ― can you stand up for people that you are not necessarily fully part of that community in a way that you can understand what you all go through? But I have always been surrounded by incredibly intelligent, powerful gay men who have lifted me up through lots of changes in my life. Becoming famous was very strange and it’s the gay men in my life that helped me to become a woman. And I don’t know that a lot of people would understand that but it’s because of what you’ve through ― you survived so much that you inspire me to continue surviving.

While Gaga has identified as bisexual in the past, she also uses the word “ally” to describe her relationship with LGBTQ people.

Thanks for continuing to be an amazing advocate, Gaga!

“Not coming Bruce,” she replies. “It’s already here.”

Pregnant Woman Gives ‘Decent Dude’ Trophy To First Man To Offer His Subway Seat

In late February, Yvonne Lin, a product designer who is currently about eight months pregnant, was riding the New York subway when a man got up to give her his seat. What that man didn’t know, was that he was the first man to offer Lin a seat throughout her two pregnancies. He also had no idea she had been carrying a trophy in her bag during her last trimester, ready for this exact occasion.

During her first pregnancy, Lin carried around “some Papyrus card” with the word “Congratulations” on the inside to give to the first man who offered her a subway seat. She told The Huffington Post she never got to use it. During her second pregnancy, she upped her game and bought a customized trophy with the words “#1 DECENT DUDE, First Man to Offer Subway Seat to Pregnant Woman throughout Two Pregnancies” on it.

Lin told The Huffington Post that she bought a 7-inch trophy so it would be “big enough to make an impact, but small enough to fit in [her] work bag.”

Lin said that she dressed to “look as pregnant as possible” and that she commutes close to two hours on the subway every day from Washington Heights. She added that she gets seats from women while she’s pregnant “fairly often,” but never from men.

That changed when Ricky Barksdale offered his seat.

“He was staring at his phone,” Lin said. “He looked up and looked around and was like, ‘Holy crap, you’re pregnant! You need to have a seat.’”

Lin then gave him his trophy.

Barksdale, an army veteran and stuntman, said he chuckled when he first saw it. The dad of two thought it was a joke, but realized what Lin meant after he read what was on the trophy.

“It was a nice gesture of her, but it’s also sad for my male counterparts to allow something like this to happen,” he told HuffPost, adding, “If you clearly see a visible pregnant woman, you’re okay to stand up. She needs that more than you.”

Lin posted a photo of Barksdale and the trophy on her Instagram on Feb. 28. She didn’t get his name during their subway encounter, but as sites like DNA Info and Mashable began picking up the story, someone recognized Barksdale. The two are now in touch on Instagram.

Lin learned about his veteran and stuntman background and called him a “real life superhero.” Barksdale hopes the story will encourage others to offer their seats to people who need them.

“I just hope that this story motivates others to do the right thing,” he said. “Whether they’re pregnant, disabled, elderly, just do the right thing and be a decent human being.”

The Brawny Man Is The Brawny Woman For Women’s History Month

Brawny is ringing in Women’s History Month by declaring (again) that #StrengthHasNoGender.

The brand’s latest ad campaign highlights groundbreaking women in history and also focuses specifically on four inspiring women in STEM. This is the campaign’s second iteration, which was launched for the first time last year during Women’s History Month.

The ad campaign includes five videos; the main main one, titled “Breaking Barriers,” highlights the accomplishments of historic women like Harriet Tubman, Marie Curie and Serena Williams. The four other videos in the campaign focus on four women who are making history right now ― such as the first black female combat pilot in the U.S. armed forces.

Scroll below to read about these four badass women.

1. Dr. Patty Lopez is a datacenter engineer, STEM leader and has won seven patents awards. Listen to her story here

2. Vernice Armour was the first black female combat pilot in the U.S. armed forces. Listen to her story here

3. Brittany Wenger is a self-taught coder who invented a groundbreaking breast cancer detection program. Oh, and she’s only a senior in college. Listen to her story here.

4. Dr. Anna Kornbrot is an oral surgeon, and the first woman to graduate from University of Pennsylvania. Listen to her story here

Brawny donated $ 75,000 towards STEM education for participants in women’s empowerment organization Girls Inc.

“There are women and girls everywhere who exhibit strength and resilience in their lives, and that’s the inspiration behind the Brawny #StrengthHasNoGender campaign,” Frances Morgan, senior brand manager at Georgia-Pacific, said in a press release. “STEM is among many areas of society that are underrepresented by females, and we felt this would be a powerful platform to address this issue. Our partnership with Girls, Inc. will help promote girls’ interest in these fields and empower them to break gender stereotypes.”

For the month of March, shoppers can get a “limited edition” of Brawny paper towels that feature the Brawny woman not man. Commercial gimmick? Yes. A kinda fun one? Also, yes.

Young Woman Unlocks Secrets Of The Universe At A Music Festival

Who are we? Where do we come from? Why do hands look so trippy?

We may never know the answers to these questions, but for a brief moment it would appear this young woman at a music festival did.

The promotional video was put together by the producers of Wobbleland, an annual California music festival that plays dubstep music. This year’s festival, held this month, featured artists including Skrillex and Nero. The video, posted online Thursday, already has amassed millions of views.

A Wobbleland organizer put the video on Reddit, saying the woman was given a free guest list for life for allowing producers to use the footage.

Some say she’s still dancing.

Woman Upstages Her Own Proposal With Incredible Half-Court Shot

A surprise marriage proposal usually takes the cake, but one woman stole the show before her boyfriend even popped the question.

Erin Tobin was selected to participate in a Dunkin’ Donuts half-court shot promotion during Thursday night’s Siena Saints men’s basketball game at the Times Union Center in Albany, New York.

Tobin’s boyfriend, Steve Duckett, set up the scenario with the help of Dunkin’ Donuts and Siena Athletics so he could propose to her mid-court. He hid in the Dunkin’ Donuts mascot while the Siena alumna got ready.

Before Duckett revealed himself and popped the question, Tobin sank a half-court basket and the crowd went wild. The proposal turned out to be the cherry on top of an already awesome night.

Watch it all in the video above.

When authorities announced in November they’d found a missing woman in a South Carolina storage container, they described her captivity in stark terms: She was kept “chained like a dog,” and the sheriff said, “This is the stuff you see in the movies.”

Now that rescued woman, Kala Brown, is describing the terror of her confinement.

In an upcoming two-part interview on Dr. Phil, her first since being free, Brown says she was kept nearly immobile by a short length of chain, no more than three feet, fastened around her neck.

“My neck was in one corner and my ankle was in another corner,” she tells host Dr. Phil McGraw in a new clip from the interview, which begins airing on Monday.

She says she was left handcuffed, chained and gagged by her accused abductor, Todd Kohlhepp, who investigators believe is a serial killer accused of murdering seven people. (It is unclear whether he has entered a plea.)

Brown says in the clip that the container where she was kept was not empty. “It was pitch black,” she says. “but he had a flashlight and he had a lot of shelving with, like, dried food and rations and stuff and lots of bottles of water.”

Brown and her boyfriend, who was later found dead on Kohlhepp’s property, went missing on Aug. 31. Brown was found on Nov. 3, and Kohlhepp was arrested soon after.

In her sit-down with McGraw, Brown shares “intense details” from her ordeal – as well as her resilience.

“No matter what he did to me,” she says, “he did not break me.”

Brown’s interview on Dr. Phil will air Monday and Tuesday. Check local listings.

Woman Left Husband Of 22 Years After He Said He Was Voting For Trump

There are only so many political arguments a marriage can withstand before it crumbles. Californian Gayle McCormick, 73, learned that firsthand.

She and her husband of 22 years separated after he “casually mentioned during a lunch with friends last year that he planned to vote for Trump,” according to Reuters.

“It totally undid me that he could vote for Trump,” McCormick told Reuters. “I felt like I had been fooling myself. It opened up areas between us I had not faced before. I realized how far I had gone in my life to accept things I would have never accepted when I was younger.”

Apparently, McCormick’s husband didn’t end up voting for Trump after all and wrote in former House of Representatives Speaker Newt Gingrich instead. McCormick also wrote in her vote for Democratic U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont.

Despite this change of heart, McCormick moved into her own place in Bellingham, Washington. The couple does still intend to vacation together, despite their difference in views.

“It really came down to the fact I needed to not be in a position where I had to argue my point of view 24/7. I didn’t want to spend the rest of my life doing that,” McCormick said.

Muslim Woman Coolly Beats Trolls At Their Own Game

Islamophobes know how to use the anonymity of social media to spread misinformation about Muslims and their faith. And Muslim women who try to speak up and create spaces for themselves online often find that they become targets of this cyber harassment.

Farha, a 19-year-old Canadian college student, told The Huffington Post that she’s used to receiving these kinds of ridiculous (and utterly ignorant) messages about her faith. The student, who asked to withhold her last name for her safety, said she usually ignores these messages. But a few months back, when some anonymous trolls tried playing games with her, she decided to get creative ― and serve them a smooth, chilled glass of their own haterade.

Farha said she received an anonymous question on her Tumblr account, the bootydiaries, about six months ago. The user asked, “why can’t muslims tell other muslims to stop killing people? [SIC]” Farha said she kept thinking about the message and “chuckling at how illogical it was.”

So this time, she decided to give the troll a long, satirical answer, mocking the idea that the world’s 1.6 billion Muslims are a well-organized monolith.

When she received a response that seemed to be defending the first questioner, Farha kept dishing it out.

Farha told The Huffington Post that she’s often been on the receiving end of hateful Islamophobic and racist messages.

She said decided to share these conversations on Twitter last week because of President Donald Trump’s actions against Muslims, and after hearing about the attack on a mosque in Quebec. Farha said she feels like it’s  “getting more and more socially acceptable to hate Muslims.”

The Twitter post has gone viral, with more than 19,000 retweets.

“There are like 1.6 billion of us yet we’re held responsible for something caused by few, asked why we don’t condemn them when we do, asked why we don’t ‘stop ISIS’ when we’re the ones they target,” she wrote in an email.

Farha said that being a Muslim online right now means “being careful with your words and having thick skin.” She’s found a way to deal with those pressures by using humor to address hate.

“I use sarcasm because I’m tired of constantly having to smile as I answer ignorant hateful comments from fear that they’ll label me as an evil and mean Muslim. Wearing a hijab suddenly means representing every Muslim on Earth, and if you answer hate with hate then you get a nice meal of ‘wowwww’ with a side of ‘all muslims are hateful!!!’,” she said. “But I’m on a diet.”

“Sarcasm is a fun route, but more importantly, it’s a safe route. I want to make people laugh but also make a point.”

Nothing Beets ‘The Office’ Prank This Woman Pulled On A Tinder Match

Fact: Even Jim Halpert would be proud of a prank this masterful.

Over the weekend, a woman named Caroline from Cleveland, Ohio, tweeted out a very special conversation she had with a guy she met on Tinder.

“Yesterday I convinced a boy that I am a beet farmer by using quotes from ‘The Office,’” the Kent State University freshman wrote on Twitter.

Caroline mined material from Dwight Schrute, everyone’s favorite Scranton-based, beet-loving paper salesman:

Nate was intrigued… (And clearly a good sport for engaging with a Tinder match this beet obsessed.)

From there, Caroline took it to the next level:

As of now, Caroline’s tweet has racked up over 18,000 retweets and spurred on some equally hilarious responses:

The good news is, no one’s feelings were hurt here. Caroline told BuzzFeed that once the tweet went viral, she messaged Nate to let him know she was not, in fact, a beet farmer.

“It was all in good fun,” she said. “He thought it was hilarious and that it was cool that it was getting so many retweets.”

Hey, we think she’d have Jim’s approval on this one.

The Huffington Post reached out to Caroline for comment but did not hear back at the time of publication.

This Woman Found A Festive Way To Give Her Wedding Dress A Second Life

For 26 years, Tess Heidelberger’s wedding dress was sitting in a dusty box in her basement next to her Christmas decorations.

“I thought, ‘What a waste,’” she told The Huffington Post. “My basic Christmas tree skirt was on the top of the box of Christmas decorations and that’s when I got the idea to put the two of them together.”

Tess, who lives in Mauldin, South Carolina, purchased the dress in 1989 so it had all the hallmarks of 80s bridal style ― like those signature puffy sleeves. She got married the following year in 1990.

Her daughters had no interest in wearing it themselves (they felt it was too dated), so there were no objections to Tess turning the dress into an art project.

She grabbed a pair of scissors, her hot glue gun and got to work. All she needed to buy was a plain Christmas tree skirt (to put underneath the dress fabric) and some pretty ribbon to cover the glue.

“I laid out my wedding dress and cut the skirt off the dress ― the first cut is the hardest!” Tess explained to HuffPost. “Then I cut off any details on the dress, like appliqués, bows and beading. Then I pinned the wedding dress skirt on the plain Christmas tree skirt until I liked the way it looked. Then I just hot glued it in place and I added the extra appliqués I cut out earlier.”

In all, it only took Tess an hour to complete. She was very pleased with the finished product.

“I love the way it looks!” she said “I’m very sentimental so now every Christmas I can be reminded of our special day!”

My First Time Sleeping — And Falling In Love — With Another Woman

Sometimes, the path to falling in love takes a beautiful, wholly unexpected turn.

In the Glamour magazine video above, a woman named Lindsey discusses how she slowly fell in love with another woman, even though she never expected to be in a same-sex relationship

As Lindsey explains it, her game plan as an 18-year-old new college student was simple: Hook up with boys ― lots of them. The one thing she hadn’t planned for? Falling in love with her “chipper,” almost annoyingly nice roommate, a girl also named Lindsay.

“[We started] hooking up in secret, still totally convinced that we were both straight: we were just best friends, this is totally just what best friends did,” Lindsey says she told herself. “But long story short: We’re still roommates and best friends today ― we’re also in a relationship.”

Hear how the story unfolds in the video above.

Stubblefield, released by San Francisco last month in a salary cap move, moved across the Bay on Wednesday, March 12, 2003,signing with the Oakland Raiders. Stubblefield, a 10-year veteran, had two terms with the 49ers, seven years in total. He spent the other three seasons with Washington. Somewhere In The Bulgarian Mountains, A Woman Recreates Beyoncé’s ‘Single Ladies’ In Total Silence

If someone flawlessly executes a Beyoncé number in the middle of the remote Rhodope Mountains with nobody there to see it, did it really happen?

Luckily for Gery Georgieva, the video of her triumphant achievement is gaining serious traction online. Georgieva, a British-Bulgarian artist known for blending pop and folk cultures, attempts the only YouTube re-staging of Beyoncé’s “Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It)” choreography you haven’t seen, donning traditional garb and jingling quietly against the snowy landscape. It’s bizarre and oh-so beautiful.

I see pop and folk culture as parallel,” Georgieva explained in an interview with Broadly, “in that they’re the lowest common denominator way of belonging that can move such a big amount of people. That power — to have the ability to encourage thousands of people to learn a Beyoncé dance — that’s something quite special and weird.”

Some other Georgieva moments worth exploring include this Caviar Face Tutorial, which is exactly what it sounds like, and this disco-themed reimagining of Monet’s “Water Lilies.“ Compare the artist’s skills to the original Bey below and let us know your thoughts in the comments.
