Whitney Port Sings Along to The Hills Theme Song — Without Missing a Word!

Whitney Port can still feel the rain on her skin!

Even though it’s been eight years since the series finale of The Hills, Port, 33, still knows all the words to the reality show’s theme song.

On Friday, while taking a drive with her 11-month-old son, Sonny SanfordThe Hills alum shared a video on her Instagram Story of herself singing along while Natasha Bedingfield’s 2004 song “Unwritten” played in the background.

After belting out the chorus behind the wheel, she addressed her son, who was not visible in the video.

“Sonny, this is mama’s song,” she cheerfully told her son.

Before the pair set out for their trip, Port revealed on Instagram that she was taking her son on a shopping excursion at Saks Fifth Avenue.

“Taking Sonny to @sakson Day 3 of #whitiwore. Wake up, Sonny!!” she wrote on Instagram alongside an image of her outfit of the day: a snakeskin-print dress, which she paired with black shoes and a matching black belt.

Earlier this year, Port opened up to PEOPLE about how she and husband Tim Rosenman are adjusting to life as parents — including one of her biggest (and wettest) parenting fails.

“I would say that last parenting ‘fail’ I had was when I didn’t get the diaper on fast enough and he peed in my face,” said Port.

Port also shared that while she was playing peekaboo with her son, he made her “laugh so hard I cried.”

“He was so scared and had such an insane reaction — scared in a funny way. He jumped and then ,” she explained. “Peekaboo right now is the craziest thing.”

‘Spider-Man’ Producer Uses Perfect Word To Explain Why The Cast Is So Diverse

With a great “Spider-Man” movie comes a greatly diverse cast.

Marvel and Sony’s new spin on the story, “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” includes actors from all different backgrounds, ethnicities and ages taking on pivotal roles. Zendaya and Jacob Batalon play Spider-Man’s friends, Laura Harrier is his love interest, and Marisa Tomei plays a younger version of Aunt May.

Everyone seems flipped around in one way or another, and the actors are into it.

At the “Spider-Man: Homecoming” press conference in New York on Sunday, Latino actor Tony Revolori thanked producers for giving him the role of Flash Thompson, which is traditionally a white character.

“Thank you to Jon [Watts], Amy [Pascal] and Kevin [Feige] for casting a 5-foot-8 brown guy to play a 6-foot-2 blond, blue-eyed guy,” said the actor.

The actors and producers of “Spider-Man: Homecoming” were asked about the inspiration behind the casting during the press conference, and producer Amy Pascal stepped up and dropped the mic.

“I would say the inspiration for it was reality,” said Pascal.

Yup. Reality.

The response was met with applause and “amens” from the cast and audience.

It appears everyone in production was on the same page from the beginning. Director Jon Watts previously addressed the diversity topic, similarly telling The Daily Beast:

Peter Parker goes to high school in Queens, and Queens is one of ― if not the ― most diverse places in the world. So I just wanted it to reflect what that actually looks like.

By looking at the “Spider-Man: Homecoming” cast, it’s clear this is not the same old “Spider-Man” movie we’ve become accustomed to. This is something better, and it has the positive social media reviews — and will likely get the box-office numbers — to prove it.

“Spider-Man: Homecoming” swings into theaters July 7.

Justin Sayre Has A Word Or Two About Queer Stories On Television

Justin Sayre has a few thoughts on the why recent efforts to bring queer stories to television audiences have fallen short. (WARNING: contains graphic language.)

In his latest video for HuffPost Queer Voices, the writer-performer has one stipulation when settling in for an LGBTQ-themed TV program: “At least the hair and makeup will look pretty on people.” In Sayre’s view, however, most shows that have incorporated a queer storyline have failed to measure up in that area ― and others. “I think [studio executives] are afraid that if we’re funny or if we’re loose about things, we’re still not proving to straight people how serious we are,” he said. “It feels really insincere.”

Sayre’s “International Order of Sodomites” (I.O.S.) gathers once a month for “The Meeting,” a variety show honoring an artist or a cultural work that is iconic to the gay community. The next installment of “The Meeting” hits Joe’s Pub at the Public Theater in New York April 23 and is dedicated to legendary Broadway diva, Patti LuPone. Julia Murney, Cole Escola and Molly Pope are among the performers scheduled to appear.

You can check out Sayre’s comedy album, “The Gay Agenda,” here. Meanwhile, the latest episode of “Sparkle & Circulate with Justin Sayre,” the official I.O.S. podcast, was released in March featuring an interview with singer-songwriter Gabrielle Stravelli.

There’s A Japanese Word For People Who Buy More Books Than They Can Actually Read

Book hoarding is a well-documented habit.

In fact, most literary types are pretty proud of the practice, steadfast in their desire to stuff shelves to maximum capacity. They’re not looking to stop hoarding, because parting with pieces of carefully curated piles is hard and stopping yourself from buying the next Strand staff pick is even harder. So, sorry Marie Kondo, but the books are staying.

The desire to buy more books than you can physically read in one human lifetime is actually so universal, there’s a specific word for it: tsundoku. Defined as the stockpiling of books that will never be consumed, the term is a Japanese portmanteau of sorts, combining the words “tsunde” (meaning “to stack things”) and “oku” (meaning “to leave for a while”).

We were reminded of the term this week, when Apartment Therapy published a primer for those looking to complete book-hoarder rehab. Several blogs have written on the topic before, though, surfacing new and interesting details about the word so perfect for book nerds everywhere.

While most who’ve written on the topic of tsundoku use the word to describe the condition of book hoarding itself, The LA Times used the term as a noun that describes the person suffering from book stockpiling syndrome, or “a person who buys books and doesn’t read them, and then lets them pile up on the floor, on shelves, and assorted pieces of furniture.”

Tsundoku has no direct synonym in English, Oxford Dictionaries clarified in a blog post, defining the word as “the act of leaving a book unread after buying it, typically piling it up together with other such unread books.” An informative subreddit provides even more context, explaining that “the tsundoku scale” ranges from just one unread book to a serious hoard. “Everyone is most likely to be ‘tsundokursed’ one way or the other,” it warns.

According to Quartz, tsundoku has quite a history. It originated as a play on words in the late 19th century, during what is considered the Meiji Era in Japan. At first, the “oku” in “tsunde oku” morphed into “doku,” meaning “to read,” but since “tsunde doku” is a bit of a mouthful, the phrase eventually condensed into “tsundoku.” And a word for reading addicts was born.

Speaking of addictions ― the term “bibliomania” emerged in England around the same time as “tsundoku.” Thomas Frognall Dibdin, an English cleric and bibliographer, wrote Bibliomania, or Book Madness: A Bibliographical Romance in the 1800s, outlining a fictional “neurosis” that prompted those suffering from it to obsessively collect books of all sorts.

Bibliomania has a dark past, documented more as a pseudo-illness that inspired real fear than a harmless knack for acquiring books we won’t have time to read. “Some collectors spent their entire fortunes to build their personal libraries,” Lauren Young wrote for Atlas Obscura. “While it was never medically classified, people in the 1800s truly feared bibliomania.”

Tsundoku seems to better capture the lighter side of compulsive book shopping, a word that evokes images of precariously stacked tomes one good breeze away from toppling over. While there’s no English equivalent quite as beautiful, no one’s stopping you from incorporating the Japanese word into your regular vocabulary.

“As with other Japanese words like karaoke, tsunami, and otaku, I think it’s high time that tsundoku enter the English language,” Open Culture wrote in 2014. “Now if only we can figure out a word to describe unread ebooks that languish on your Kindle. E-tsundoku? Tsunkindle?”

Here’s The Real Problem With Casually Using The Word ‘Depressed’

We need to change the way we talk about mental health.

People often use words associated with mental illness, like “depressed” or “OCD,” in casual conversation as a way to express annoyance, make a joke or explain their feelings. In truth, this is hugely disrespectful to the one in five American adults who experience a mental health condition in a given year.

It’s actually demeaning to those with true illnesses that can’t easily stop these behaviors,” Dan Reidenberg, executive director of the suicide awareness organization SAVE, previously told The Huffington Post. “If we trivialize them into something else or we make that become the person’s identity, we have done everyone a disservice.”

Artist Annie Erskine explains it best in these comics for CollegeHumor: The words you say matter when it comes to mental health. Take a look at the illustrations below:

Head over to CollegeHumor to see the rest of this spot-on series. Bottom line? Mental illness isn’t a punchline, it’s a health condition.

Michael Moore On Why We Should All Take Donald Trump ‘At His Word’

Michael Moore continues to be one of Donald Trump’s harshest critics.

In a new interview with Variety, the documentarian shared his thoughts about the president-elect, saying the reason he’s been able to stay as politically active as he has is because he’s taken Trump seriously “since day one.” (Moore predicted Trump’s victory last July.)

“You do have to take Trump at his word. I still hear people say, ‘Oh, he’s not really going to build the wall.’ Oh, he is going to build it. He knows that he’s got to deliver at least a version of the wall,” Moore said.

The “Bowling for Columbine” director also believes Trump will “absolutely” ban Muslims from entering the United States.

“He’s going to get away with it by making it a ban on Muslims who come from the following countries,” he said. “He needs just enough cover for his crowd to say, ‘Oh, he’s being reasonable there. He’s not banning all Muslims.’”

Moore’s sentiments seem to be an indirect response to Trump advisor Kellyanne Conway, who continually defends the president-elect’s controversial behavior and recently urged journalists to “look at what’s in his heart” instead of taking Trump’s words and actions at face value.

Moore admitted that he’s worried about Trump having access to nuclear weapons codes, adding, “I wish he had to go through a psychological evaluation, because I’m pretty sure that it would come out that he is a malignant narcissist.”

The director also criticized Trump’s tendency to react to any and all criticism ― including Meryl Streep’s speech at the Golden Globes ― by tweeting snarky retorts instead of focusing on more important issues (like running the country, for example).

“With all that’s going on in the world — the shooting in Fort Lauderdale, the shooting of police in Orlando, North Korea saying they have an ICBM that can hit us — and he woke up being consumed with Meryl Streep,” Moore said.

Still, the director doesn’t think Americans should be afraid of Trump’s rise. Instead, he urges those who don’t support Trump to “be brave. Be bold. Get up off the couch. Get active. Get involved.” (Moore is practicing what he preaches by leading a rally in New York City this Thursday, ahead of the inauguration.)

He continued, “No week should go by without you calling a member of Congress or one of your two senators. Make that part of your weekly routine now. Some people need to think about running for office themselves: school board, city council, precinct delegate. It’s not going to change until some of us start running.”

Why the Word SIMPLE Tells Me Absolutely Nothing About What You Want for Your Wedding – A Rant

SIMPLE is probably my least favorite word in the bridal vocabulary. What does it mean when a bride says she wants a SIMPLE wedding? That tells me absolutely nothing. I’m a wedding planner, not a psychic! 2016-04-26-1461699237-4796847-110813_SandyMalonePortraits201640x427.jpg

Just so we’re all clear on this, Merriam-Webster explains the word SIMPLE as having three primary definitions:

Not hard to understand or do
Having few parts, not complex or fancy
Not special or unusual

I have never met a bride or groom who didn’t want their wedding to be “special,” and regardless of what kind of wedding the couple chooses, rarely will it have “few parts” and be “not hard” to do. But even if the true definition of SIMPLE is what the bride and groom want, the word still tells me absolutely nothing about their vision of their wedding day.

To make sure I wasn’t missing something, I dug a little deeper for the extended definition of the word SIMPLE:

Free from guile
Free from vanity
Free from ostentation or display
Of humble origin or modest position
Lacking in knowledge or expertise
Stupid
Not socially or culturally sophisticated

You get my point now, right? SIMPLE is probably the most overused word in weddings, while at the same time, its definition absolutely, positively does not apply to what the bride and groom are describing. A wedding is a “display” of your love, although it doesn’t have to be ostentatious. And nobody wants their wedding to be considered “not socially or culturally sophisticated” even if they’re DIYing every part of it! And let’s not pretend there’s not a little vanity in mind. Otherwise, brides wouldn’t spend so much on wedding gowns, shoes, hair and makeup. Your wedding day is one of the only days you’re allowed to be vain without feeling bad about it!

I believe most couples use the word SIMPLE when they mean easy and low stress – but wedding planners have to figure out what they’re describing. Some couples mean they’re not going to do fancy décor, or invite a lot of people. Telling a wedding planner that you want a SIMPLE wedding doesn’t give them enough information to estimate a budget or give you recommendations. Using a non-descriptive word like SIMPLE when talking about a wedding does a massive disserve to the couple and their vendors.

Some brides and grooms use the word SIMPLE as a synonym for inexpensive, and that’s not usually true. In fact, sometimes the things that look like the simplest choices are actually quite time-consuming and expensive to execute.

There’s a better way to describe what you need and want for your wedding to your vendors, and it involves using a LOT of adjectives.

  • When you start planning your wedding, think about what you really want in terms of details for your big day. Think color, texture, vibe – and write those things down. Do you have a particular theme in mind? Whether it’s a “Frozen” Winter Wonderland, or a tropical island paradise, the theme will dictate some of the colors you use, and style of display.
  • 2016-04-26-1461700105-7226675-JessicaandDavebouquetandflowercrown.jpg

  • Do you want a lot of candlelight? Or elaborate flower arrangements? Or both? How do you picture the lighting – will fairy lights on the tent and in the trees suffice, or do you want to create a more vintage feel with the bulbs of Italian lights strung throughout your event? For a modern wedding, you’ll probably want colorful uplighting, and maybe some designs. Nowadays, you can have pretty much anything you want, as long as you can afford it. The more elaborate you get, the more expensive it will be.
  • Use pictures to show what you like. It doesn’t have to be a picture of what you want exactly. It’s fine to say “this is the cake I want, except I don’t want the designs on the sides,” or “just like this but with three tiers, stripes on two tiers, and sugar flowers in more colors.” For choosing flowers, you can show your florist three different bouquets and explain that you like the colors in one, the shape of another, and the way the stems are wrapped in the third. A good wedding vendor will tell you what they need to do to create the look you want for your wedding day based on everything you show them.
  • 2016-04-26-1461699611-3233967-tracyandjeffcaketable.JPG

  • Consider the way you want your guests to feel at your wedding. Do you want things to feel very formal? Or do you prefer a more relaxed atmosphere with less structure? These are the things that will help determine whether you do a seated/plated meal with place cards, or a free for all with food stations that stay open for an extended period while your guests dance, mix, and mingle. Tell your caterer what you have in mind so they can recommend the best food options for your budget and vision.
  • Music plays a big role in the event, too. Tell your wedding planner what kind of wedding reception you want to have. For a party feel, you have to play party music. You’ll probably want something lower key during cocktails and dinner, but maybe not if you’re doing stations instead of asking all your guests to be seated at one time. A live band can do a lot to reinforce a theme – calypso music for something tropical or zydeco for a Mardi Gras celebration, for example – but you can do the same with a DJ as long as you create a fantastic playlist. Remember to choose songs your guests will want to dance to or the party won’t get started easily. Ask your wedding planner for suggestions. If you can’t afford live music all night, maybe you can afford a guitar trio or jazz quartet for cocktails and dinner, and then switch it up later in the evening.

Some couples are crazy-easy to work with because they’re super descriptive about their wants and needs. We did a neon wedding for two brides, and even dyed the flowers. Another bride wore a fantastic designer gown with a skirt that lit up when the reception started, and the lights went down, so we created a light-themed wedding reception with black lights, glow necklaces, glasses and bracelets. And I’ve tied enough burlap and lace around vases for “vintage” weddings that I could do it with my eyes closed.

Your wedding planner and wedding vendors want you to be happy on your wedding day, and that means we have to deliver as promised and help you execute your own vision of your big day. We don’t have crystal balls – although I wish we did. We can’t read your mind. If you want something, you have to tell us about it. Describe what you have in mind, and send us pictures if you have them. A wedding planner’s ability to create your dream wedding depends, first and foremost, on your ability to explain what kind of wedding you want, in detail.

Until next time, happy wedding planning from Sandy Malone Weddings & Events!

Situations Where You Should Avoid Using the Word ‘Pussy’

Oxford’s Word of the Year Is an Emoji, and Now We’re Writing About It, and That Was the Point

Ah, Internet.

SHOPPING DEALS UPDATE:

The Word “Flattering” Is the #1 Enemy of Feminism Today

The worst compliment, in my eyes, isn’t “bubbly.” It isn’t even the auspicious “such a character.” The most backhanded, undermining and secretly mean thing you can say to somebody is to describe their sartorial choices as “flattering.” Not only is this a boring waste of words, but it also very much subtly implies that something about the person you’re offering probably unsolicited comment on needs said flattery; that without flattery this person is rendered in some way unacceptable.

And, not to turn this into a feminist issue (just kidding), you never, ever hear the word flattering in relation to a boy. Never are they applauded for covering up a balding head or concealing a could-be-pregnancy belly. So why are we so very used to hearing it in terms of the girls and their constantly perceived and pointed-out flaws? It’s annoying, unfair and turns clothes and makeup into a stressful, never-ending game of fixing – and it needs to stop.

To waste ones aesthetic choices entirely on trying to make oneself look better (read: more acceptable) is a borderline tragedy. If everyone is trying to “flatter” themselves into the same standardized image of attractiveness, everyone is molding themselves into the same bland abstraction of femaleness. And worse, no one is trying out things for fun, or to be different, or just to see what it looks like. A culture of fear-of-mistakes settles around how people dress or do their makeup, and that’s a sad thing.

Because, let’s be honest, a lot of what I do to myself isn’t what other people would think of as a “flattering” choice. I’ve been cultivating a uni-brow for the past year, and just recently taken to clipping my fringe into a center parting like a caricature of a nerd. I’m not interested in “flattering” my apparently problematic face and body, I don’t want to fix my imperfections and distract from my flaws. There is and should be an element of subjectivity here. One man’s “flattering” is another man’s “good God, what on earth is that?” That’s a good thing. And I’d rather elicit the “good God” response than the pernicious “flattering” any day.

So next time you sense some anxiety seeping into your getting-ready routine, take a moment. You pretty much look how you look, and there’s no point fearing that you’ve not adequately disguised your “problems”. Your problems aren’t problematic, they just exist. Instead of thinking about them, think about that exciting new metallic lipstick or those gloriously ugly shoes. By wearing something deliberately a bit off-key, the rest of you will look much more aesthetically pleasing in comparison. Now that’s the kind of flattering I can get on board with.

Speaking Truly: Bringing Presence to the Power of Our Word

2015-08-20-1440101579-248019-LIHInlawsnotOutlaws1.jpg

What an immense gift we are given in this human power to speak; this wild phenomenon of mind and heart coming together with sound to be voiced!

I’ll never forget the moment when my sweet daughter Arayla, at about 10 months of age uttered her very first word, “kiss.” We were still lying around one morning in bed, having just finished nursing, and as I adoringly kissed her sweet, pink, juicy face all over, with each kiss I planted, I said softly: “kiss… kiss… kiss… kiss… kiss…”

It was just an ordinary moment of divine mother-baby love. And then suddenly she said, distinctly: “KISS!” and I gasped, watching her little eyes open wide in recognition of her newfound power, as she repeated with her high-pitched baby voice: “Kiss, kiss, kiss!” clapping her hands with pride and joy. Oh to witness her little vocal mouth merging with her intelligence, discovering the capacity to let sound become word: what a wondrous thing!

It is an awesome power indeed — how we can use our words to bless, to praise, to pray, to convey our heart’s ponderings, to clarify our thoughts, giving voice to insight and intention. What a treasure: this way we can use our words to tell a brave and tender truth, to teach and explain, to express our perceptions, our yearnings and vulnerability. What a potent capacity we have — to use our words to express our remorse, to name our gratitude and proclaim our love; to extend the grace of forgiveness.

And of course, on the shadow side, what equally powerful and humbling capacity we have to cause real harm with our words. There are the blatant forms of this — when we allow our pain, anger and fear to speak in ways that sever us from our own hearts; the unfortunate power we have to use our words violently in blame and judgment; to wound, to punish, to intentionally cause another being to suffer; or simply in narcissistic sloppiness, how we can quickly make a mean mess with our words.

Recently I stumbled into a dark mood. Agitated by the Summer heat, sleep-deprived and triggered by a few different things not going my way, I became grumpy and impatient, and for a stretch of about 40 minutes, I indulged this grumpiness and lazily let my words extend from it. Unfortunately, during this time, I happened to interact with several different people, including my two children, and watched the power of my energy spreading like a contagious force of dark will. Fortunately I was able to catch it before too much harm had been done, re-center my intention, and apologize sincerely in the different directions I had allowed my irritated energy to flow. But it was a humble reminder of the infectiously toxic ripples we can create with our words.

And there are even more subtle, less conscious ways we can unwittingly cause harm with our words — while speaking from our blind-spots, our own sub-conscious wounding and conditioning; moments when unbeknownst to us, our voices are contributing to the poison of ignorance, subtly perpetuating the disease of war and separation in our world.

I was quite young still — 16 or so — when I began to notice this great range of power to be found in speaking; this innate capacity to bring both beauty and harm with our words; and as though remembering something from my ancient soul reserves of wisdom, I knew I must learn to be vigilant, discriminating and discerning with my words. It was at that point that silence became a precious companion.

I spent a lot of my college years alone — quiet in contemplation, creating art, attending class, studying and writing. The social atmosphere of college life held little interest or resonance for me. Often, in everyday social situations, when I would go to speak, I would find the uncomfortable gap between what my heart knew to be true, what I authentically yearned to share, and my limited confidence and ability to say it. I felt socially awkward (not unlike how I still feel in moments!) in the face of the cultural expectation to exchange words loosely, superficially, disingenuously and casually: “Hey, how are you? Why, just fine thank you, and you?”

After college I lived for 18 months at a remote residential healing school, sequestered in the golden hills of Northern California. It was there I was offered the unusual choice to wear on occasion a small sign around my neck, much like a name tag, with the simple words printed “In Loving Silence.” I wore this sign on specific days when I was authentically called to embody quiet. What a gift this was — the permission to claim my own silence, the speechlessness and utter wordlessness I so often felt, while attending my classes and meals; inhaling and exhaling the colorful bounty of sunrises and sunsets.

Not long after that I met my spiritual teacher Gangaji, and by the grace of her spoken words, so masterfully pointing the heart Home to its Source, I awakened to the truth of my being.

Her words were unlike any I had ever heard: words of utterly profound, mind-stopping truth; words of true teaching. Her words were sublimely given to speaking the unspeakable, somehow telling the un-tellable, inviting direct revelation of the unknowable; holy words pointing to the vast, silence Source, from which all words arise. Her words invoked the realization of what cannot be thought; what is deeper than thought, deeper than knowing and unknowing. Her words somehow illuminated the shining, endless, exquisitely mysterious truth of the matter.

Bless the countless teachers who use their voices in such a way: to inspire, to guide, to clarify, invite and embrace! Bless the words used as skillful swords to slice through the mind’s relentless habits of dichotomy, separation, and defense. Bless the words so generously intended to open, to ignite and beckon awakening; to annihilate illusion and confirm true self-awareness.

Yesterday, retreating at a beloved local hot springs, a place I visit in gratitude for the sacred, natural healing sanctuary it is, I found myself challenged at one point to incorporate the constant presence of human chatter into my space of silent reverie.

Irritated and distracted, I witnessed my own impatient, opinionated human thoughts — wishing everyone would just be quiet, especially in a holy, healing place like this. I thought: if only we could let the incessant need to express our minds just come to rest for a bit, take a blessed pause, be willing to look deeper than social and vocal exchange, so as to open more fully to the infinite treasures waiting for discovery within?

Of course I noticed with ironic humor the sound of my own thoughts, certainly just as loud and annoying as anyone’s chatter, and my impatience thankfully gave way to a deeper truth of inclusion: all the sounds of life can be seen as sacred and precious, when seen from the eyes of the heart. Mindless, social, human chatter is not unlike bird chatter; simply another sound of God speaking to itself.

And yet, I still can’t help but take notice of how often people approach me in this space, wanting something — ranging from sexual energy to simple friendly acknowledgment; various forms of seeking attention. We all want something, don’t we? It’s natural, and really quite innocent. But how often do we turn to mindless chatter and casual conversation, sharing our endless stream of thoughts, either in hopes that it will bring us what we want — attention, connection, intimacy, acknowledgment, entertainment, love — or that it will temporarily distract us from the discomfort of our deeper longings?

What we most deeply want is unspeakable, and cannot be sated by any exchange. Words can certainly serve it, but they will always fall blessedly short.

I invite you, as I invite myself, just as an experiment: to try speaking only what must be said, and leave the rest behind. I invite you as I invite myself to hold the word as a sacred power we have: to heal, to inform and transform, invoke and invite, as well as to harm, to wound, to delude and to sever.

What are we contributing to today, with the words we choose to share? What are we hoping to get from what we say? Attention? Agreement? Collusion? Connection? Are we contributing to love, or to fear with our chosen words? To truth, or to suffering?

Speak less, and see what arises. Speak from presence, and see what this feels like in your heart and body. Speak only what is true for you to speak, and see what space this opens for yourself and the ones with whom you share your words.

It is only a short while we are given with these minds and hearts and voices unified in these particular, individual forms.

What will you say? How will you use the gift? How will you voice your heart, your seeing, your perception, your questions, insights and revelations? How will you bless us with what you choose to speak, and equally so by allowing us to receive the delicious, silent spaces in between?

I can hardly wait to hear.

A Look At Bernie Sanders’ Spoken Word Album And Full Discography

We all know that Bernie Sanders recorded a spoken word album. But not a lot of people know that Bernie has a robust catolog of musical work. So I thought it was important to look at all of Bernie Sanders’ albums and see where his spoken word album landed. Also, I’m sure you’ve been in one of those “What’s your favorite Bernie Sanders song?” conversations at a party. Everybody is rattling off hits like “We Shall Overcome” and “The Banks Are Made Of Marble,” and you’re thinking, “Those are the only two I know!” Don’t worry! This should help you out.

“We Shall Overcome” (1987)

The album that put him on the musical map. Just great top to bottom. It speaks to his ability, and we get a sense of exactly who he is and what he’s about. Very rare for a freshman album.

RATING: 4.5/5

BEST TRACKS:

“We Shall Overcome”

”The Banks Are Made Of Marble

“Bernie Sanders Live” (1988)

Bernie LIVE at the Forum. This release was a brilliant move by Bernie to simmer expectation after such a hot start. He decided to record a live album with everybody’s favorite hits while sprinkling in a few new tracks. Also, some of the best mid-song banter OF ALL TIME! Guy took three to six questions from the audience between every song.

RATING: 4/5

BEST TRACKS:

The Top 1% Of Our Countries Wealth Governs The Bottom 45%”

We’re Living In An Oligarchy And Here’s Why!”

“Bernie” (1989)

Bernie’s true sophomore album fulfilled every bit of expectation. Bernie spends every track on this album taking on race relations and shining a light on topics that nobody was talking about at the time. With tunes to make you get up and get down. I mean the hook in “Institutional Racism Is Real And We’ve Done Little To Stop It” makes you want to jump on your bed and scream, “BERNIE BABY!”

RATING: 4/5

BEST TRACKS

Institutional Racism Is Real And We’ve Done Little To Stop It

Minorities Shouldn’t Have To Work Three Jobs To Make Rent

“The Banks Did WHAT?!” (1997)

A change from his usual beat. Bernie’s first (and only) comedy album was met with confusion and disdain. Mainly because his audience knew him to be a soulful musician, NOT an angry Lewis Black-style comic. I’m sure you’ll find some die-hard fans that say it’s his best work, but they just don’t want to accept that their hero miffed.

It happens.

RATING: 1/5

The Girl Who Taught Me to Spell the Word ‘Love’

In my 49 years on this planet, I have had the chance to meet some amazing people and make a lot of good friends. Some have lasted beyond time and circumstance, while others have ended naturally after school, or a move or job change.

A few ended painfully.

But there is one friend whose effect on me was so profound that I think of her often.

Carol and I were in the same afternoon kindergarten class. She was my ideal of what a girl should look and be like. Her long, brown hair hung down to her waist, and she possessed the all-American face I longed for myself. She had the ability to make friends easily and always managed to look neat and pretty.

If Carol was a polished pearl, I was a diamond in the rough.

I couldn’t stay clean if I was kept under glass. My hair never looked right, no matter what my mom did to it, so I frequently sported an un-girlish pixie cut. And it wasn’t always easy for me to make new friends, especially with other girls.

Unlike Carol, I couldn’t color in the lines, glue anything neatly or cut a straight line to save my life. School never came easy for me, and kindergarten was no exception.

It wouldn’t be until years later when my dyslexia was discovered that I knew why everything was such a struggle. But even at the age of 5, I knew something was wrong.

I never felt like a misfit when I was with her. She liked and accepted me for who I was. If someone smart and popular like her wanted to be my friend, how bad could I be?

One day, we were sitting next to each other making a card for our families. I couldn’t figure out how to spell the word “love,” and I asked her for help. With the skill and patience my teachers sometimes lacked, she taught me how to spell and write the word on my card. I never forgot how to spell it again.

The following year, Carol started first grade at the local Catholic school. I was heartbroken and so mad at the church for taking my friend away from me. We were never classmates again. Despite only living a few blocks away from each other, we rarely got together anymore.

I can’t remember if my mother used the word “cancer” when she told me Carol was sick, but I knew it was serious.

I can still see her that Halloween when she came trick-or-treating. Her beautiful long hair was gone, and she had a little granny cap on. But she was on my front stoop smiling and getting her candy like any other kid.

A few months later, I went to her birthday party and brought her a Barbie. Since I unceremoniously ripped every package I got, I thought it was odd that she wouldn’t take the plastic off the doll’s hair. Years later, it occurred to that she might have been trying to protect the doll’s hair because she couldn’t protect her own.

I was home sick from school the day my mom got the call that Carol died. I was in the third grade and hadn’t seen her for at least a year, but I felt the loss. I knew I would never get to play with her again. She was gone.

Carol never had the chance to grow up, but I did. I went on to have sleepovers, act in plays, sing in choirs, go to parties and dream about what I would be when I was an adult. I got to experience all the first dates, kisses, heartbreaks, jobs and apartments that she never did.

Today I’m a writer, wife and mom of three. My youngest child is around the same age I was when Carol died. Life has certainly gone on. Yet each and every time I spell the word “love,” I can’t help but think of the girl with the long brown hair.

Word Of Mouth: Nashville Conversations: Insight Into The Drive, Passion, And Innovation Of Music City's Creative

Word Of Mouth: Nashville Conversations: Insight Into The Drive, Passion, And Innovation Of Music City's Creative

Right now, there is no city in the United States hotter, cooler, or more it than Nashville, TN. With a booming economy, a great quality of life, and a creative, collaborative entreprepeneurial community, Nashville is on the short-list of living and travel destinations for passionate and innovative minds. As many newspapers, magazines, and websites have pointed out, one of the critical components to Nashville''s growth and popularity is it''s thriving and cutting-edge music, culinary, and artistic communities.
Word of Mouth: Nashville Conversations is an elegant collection of interviews by Nashville writer Lily C. Hansen, highlighted by stunning, black & white photography from some of Nashville''s finest photographers, that captures the drive, passion, and innovation of several prolific Nashvillians who have thrived in – and helped drive — the art, culinary, and music industries. Also included are several wild card personalities: those who possess talents that defy labeling and elipse categorization. Word of Mouth is an inside look at the exploding community of Nashville and a multifaceted portrait of the intellectual and inventive capital that makes the city hum with energy.
It''s title reflects what makes Word of Mouth special: by interviewing each of these personalities, Word of Mouth relies on the classic form of intimate conversation to gain insight and understanding of each personality while also capturing the organic and tried-and-true method – word of mouth — through which each have attracted their fan-base and support network. Word of Mouth: Nashville Conversations is a testament to Nashville''s incredible mixture of artistic talent but also it''s zest for collaboration, rather than competitiveness: similar to the artistic community''s nonexistent hierarchy, up-and-coming talent is interviewed alongside illustrious, internationally-recognized artists.
While Word of Mouth: Nashville Conversations focuses on the creative entrepeneurs of Music City, it is a book that knows no geographical limits; it is for every creative entrepreneur, everywhere. As a collection of anecdotes, quotes and wisdom shared by those pursuing their dreams or those who have already obtained commercial fruition, it presents the stories and the insights that any innovative mind, young and old alike, needs to hear as they follow their heart and pursue their own creative path.

“Let’s talk about this with milk in it,” Ali says, holding a mug of Oprah Chai.

During their discussion, the two also talk about Ali’s future and what she hopes her legacy will be. Watch the above video to learn the one word the star uses to describe her legacy and why it is “so, so important” to her. Plus, Ali jokes about what she thinks her legacy may actually be, prompting an amused laugh from Oprah.

The Spoken Word: Recollections of Dryden History, The Early Years (NASA SP-2003-4530) – Scott Crossfield Interview, Muroc, NACA Research, X-1 Project

Since the founding of the Dryden Flight Research Center History Office in 1996, its staff has conducted nearly a hundred interviews with retired and serving employees. Their recollections represent a unique resource in understanding the development of aerospace technology in the second half of the 20th century. Their personal experiences, insights, and opinions allow the reader to gain an understanding into what it was actually like to have been involved with some of the milestone events in aerospace history. These interviews have been edited and assembled into this monograph, so that a wider audience can also share in their experiences. This study covers the early years of what eventually became the Dryden Flight Research Center. It spans the period between the arrival of Walter Williams and the first group of NACA engineers at Muroc in 1946, and ends with the establishment of NASA in 1958. This timeframe encompasses the breaking of the sound barrier, the pivotal inertial coupling research, the first use of computer simulations, the transformation of the NACA facility from a pair of old hangars into a state-of-the-art research center, and the dawn of the space age. These events took place against the background of the end of World War II, the start of the Cold War, and the twin technological revolutions of jet propulsion and supersonic flight. They are told by the people who participated in these events, in their own words. The foundations of the Dryden Flight Research Center date back more than a half century, to a time when aviation faced revolutionary technical changes. When the first NACA contingent arrived in September 1946, they found the Muroc Army Air Field to be an isolated and barren outpost. The post-war demobilization had left the hastily constructed base facilities in a poor state of repair. Palmdale and Lancaster in the late 1940s were rough desert towns lacking many of the conveniences to which the new arrivals from Langley (and their spouses) had been
