Amanda Lear Would Do Anything Jean Paul Gaultier Asks

On and off the runway, the cast and crew of Jean Paul Gaultier’s upcoming revue “Fashion Freak Show” had turned out in full force for his smoking hot, in all senses, fall couture show. Actress and scriptwriter Tonie Marshall, the revue’s codirector, sat alongside former cabaret star and “queen of the night” Régine.
“I’d do anything Jean Paul asks,” said Amanda Lear, having done his previous revue in Berlin three years ago. “We’ve been talking about it for a while.” The singer and veteran model recently lent her voice to Edna Mode in the sequel to Disney’s animated movie “The Incredibles 2,” which was released in France earlier that day.
Visual artists Pierre Commoy and Gilles Blanchard, best known as Pierre et Gilles, were taking in the brouhaha as Naomi Campbell took her seat under the snap of a thousand smartphones — and no shortage of professional lenses either. “There are thousands of images today, and I love it. You get to step into a person’s universe,” said Blanchard.
The artists, whose contribution to the upcoming Folies Bergères production includes an image symbolizing the love between Gaultier and his late partner Francis Menuge, are exhibiting a series of works on the religious in

Cavs are pursuing several different trade scenarios that would shake up roster

With LeBron James not being an active participant in their plans, the Cleveland Cavaliers have been left in a tough position this summer. Their game plan for this summer would likely be dramatically different should he stay, compared to if he takes his talents elsewhere. Despite this tough position, it appears as though Koby Altman has been trying to increase the flexibility of the roster. In a joint report by ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Brian Windhorst and Ramona Shelburne, it was mentioned that the Cavs are active in pursuing a shake-up of their current roster: The Cavaliers have been working on several trade and salary-cap-clearing possibilities to be aggressive in free agency, but they have

Aaron Hernandez’s Ex-Teammate Thinks Fiancée’s Baby Is Another Man’s — and Says Disgraced Athlete ‘Would Be Happy’

Thirteen months after former football star Aaron Hernandez hanged himself in prison, his fiancée, Shayanna Jenkins, announced that she’s expecting her second child.

“Many of you have had speculated that I may be expecting another miracle which is very accurate, I wanted to take time and process and post when I was ready to. I wanted to have a moment for myself alone with my daughter … we are beyond excited about the new addition and chapter we will soon begin,” Jenkins, 28, wrote on Instagram, accompanied by a bump-revealing photo.

The surprise announcement has left many who knew the former football star wondering what Hernandez, who was serving a life sentence in prison for murder, would have thought of the latest developments.

“Aaron had demons; we all know that,” says a former teammate of Hernandez’s from the University of Florida. “But he really was devoted to his daughter. Boy, did he love her. I think he’d be very glad to know that she was going to have a little sister.”

The former teammate believes the baby is not Hernandez’s.

Hernandez and Jenkins had a complicated relationship. They welcomed their daughter Avielle, 5, in 2012. In November of that year, the two also became engaged, although they never married.

“In many ways, Shayanna was the best thing to ever happen to him,” says the teammate. “He was crazy about her. She knew a lot of things about him, and she accepted him anyway.”

One of the things that Jenkins’ accepted about Hernandez was his bisexuality. “She knew that about him,” says the source, “And she supported him.”

So would Hernandez be okay with the fact that Jenkins has moved on with her life? “She was so loyal to him,” says the former teammate. “He would be happy for her.”

Hernandez, a former tight end for the New England Patriots, was arrested in 2013 for the murder of Odin Lloyd, a man dating Jenkins’ sister. As he awaited trial, he was charged with the fatal drive-by shootings of Daniel Jorge Correia de Abreu and Safiro Teixeira Furtado.

He was convicted of Lloyd’s murder and given sentenced to life in prison; he was acquitted of the double homicide in April 2017 and days later was found dead in his prison cell. The disgraced athlete had killed himself, he was 27.

• Want to keep up with the latest crime coverage? Click here to get breaking crime news, ongoing trial coverage and details of intriguing unsolved cases in the True Crime Newsletter.

In May 2017, Jenkins appeared on the Dr. Phil show and said she did not believe the athlete killed himself, despite authorities’ determination otherwise.

“I don’t think this was a suicide,” she told Dr. Phil McGraw, citing his acquittal and pending appeal on the Odin case. “That would make me doubt that he took his own life. He was very positive, so excited to come home.”

She added that Hernandez had spoken with their daughter after his acquittal and told her, “Daddy’s gonna be home.”

Cumberbatch Currently Unsure When Dr. Strange 2 Would Happen

Marvel Studios is currently not working on Doctor Strange 2, according to Benedict Cumberbatch.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly Cumberbatch, who portrays Dr. Stephen Strange in the MCU, revealed he’s currently unsure when Doctor Strange 2 would happen and that, for the time being, there have been no talks of making a sequel.

“Not at the moment, no,” Cumberbatch said when asked when he might be shooting Doctor Strange 2. “The masterplan is continually in flux, so it would be out of order for me to speculate.”

The first Doctor Strange film released in 2016 and in our review of the movie, we say it successfully “expands the MCU into a very trippy, supernatural realm.” Fans can watch Doctor Strange in action again quite soon in the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War, which hits theaters on April 27.

Mandy Moore Would Love to Swipe Rebecca’s Vintage Coats and Sweaters From This Is Us Set

Any This Is Us fans out there know that Mandy Moore’s character, Rebecca, has a pretty amazing boho-chic wardrobe on the show. From her cool jewelry (that moon necklace!) to her glamorous performance outfits (remember this finale look?) to her on-screen wedding dress and flower crown (what bridal dreams are made of), her vintage looks definitely stand out.

And Moore loves those looks just as much as fans do.

“There are a lot of really great vintage pieces especially from some of the ’70s wardrobe, like some great coats and some sweaters and boots,” she tells PeopleStyle about items she’d like to swipe for herself from set. “ do a lot of scouring of vintage stores and on Etsy and stuff. And I feel like that’s what I would want to snag if no one’s looking.”

And that’s not all: “She’s got a great hat collection,” Moore adds. “I love a good floppy hat, too.”

As for her off-screen style, Moore has been on a serious chic streak promoting the sophomore season of the hit NBC show. Yesterday alone she wore four different outfits, each one cuter than the next.

Moore started her day at the Today Show wearing a bright green geometric-print midi dress by Lela Rose with multicolor Casadei heels. She continued to show off her love of color at SiriusXM Studios with a striped high-waisted A-line skirt, paired with a navy turtleneck and matching Via Spiga heels.

The second half of her day brought on sexier styles, with a hot pink asymmetrical dress at The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Then she changed into a flirty-meets-sexy black LBD featuring a full skirt and cutout bodice by Adam Lippes to attend the annual FFANY Shoes on Sale celebration, which supported FFANY’s Breast Cancer Awareness fundraising efforts and to tease QVC’s giant shoe sale happening this week.

Mandy Moore Shows Off New Ring After Engagement To Taylor Goldsmith

This Thursday, October 12, QVC is hosting its annual “FFANY Shoes on Sale” on-air event from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. ET. During the sale, approximately 140 shoe styles will be offered at half the manufacturer’s suggested retail price with a minimum of 80 percent of the purchase price benefitting various breast cancer research and education institutions.

Governor General of Canada Thinks It Would Be ‘Marvelous’ If Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Got Married

Add another person to the list of those helping Meghan Markle and Prince Harry someday marry!

David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, told ITV that the romance is strengthening ties between the U.K. and Canada, where the American actress films her show Suits and has adopted as a second home.

“I think it would be quite marvellous and I hope it would be quite marvellous for him and obviously it will help to bring us together,” Johnston said. “But, you know, that reflects so many of the people-to-people ties that are so strong. I think about 20% of our citizens would claim British heritage so those ties are very strong.”

Johnston said that he “didn’t know” that Markle, 36, was sitting near him at the opening ceremonies for the Invictus Games in Toronto.

“ was alone but you say, I gather, there was a young lady in the audience who was watching him with great interest,” he said.

Markle was all smiles as she cheered on the athletes in the Paralympic-style Invictus Games for wounded service members from around the world. Meanwhile, Harry sat a few rows away next to First Lady Melania Trump whom he met with earlier in the day.

Toronto has become a special place for the couple. Harry made a secret detour from the Caribbean to spend time with Markle in her adopted hometown in December. The royal couple also spent Easter weekend together in Toronto. Harry also called Toronto a “home away from home” when he met with Johnston.

“Despite the distance, the media attention and everything else, there’s a real ease to their relationship,” a source previously told PEOPLE. “It just works. They are deeply happy.”

Dunkirk Vet, 97, Breaks Down in Tears After Watching Movie: ‘I Never Thought I Would See That Again’

A 97-year-old vet who survived the battle of Dunkirk spoke through tears after watching the premiere of the new Christopher Nolan movie.

Ken Sturdy, a native of Wales who currently lives in Calgary, Canada, donned a suit jacket adorned with medals when he headed to Calgary’s Westhills Cinemas on Friday to watch the World War II drama that he lived through nearly 80 years ago.

“I never thought I would see that again,” Sturdy told Canada’s Global News. “It was just like I was there again.”

The film tells the story of the historic battle that took place between Nazi Germany and the Allied forces. The nine-day battle saw the evacuation of British and Allied forces from the beaches of the namesake French town as the Nazis continued their advance on the opposing forces. In the end, 338,226 men escaped, but thousands also perished.

RELATED VIDEO: Why Did Prince Harry Attend the ‘Dunkirk’ Premiere?

Sturdy was just 20 when he worked with the Royal Navy to help stranded soldiers surrounded by the advancing German army.

“I was in those little boats picking them out of the water,” he told Global News. “I had the privilege of seeing that film tonight but I’m saddened by it because of what happened on that beach.”

Thousands of soldiers died or were captured during the battle, and Sturdy said the film took him back to those harrowing days.

“Watching the movie, I could see my old friends again and a lot of them died in the war,” Sturdy said. “I went on convoys after that in the North Atlantic. I had lost so many of my buddies.”

“Don’t just go to the movie for entertainment,” he continued, his eyes filling with tears. “Think about it. And when you become adults, keep thinking.

“Tonight I cried because it’s never the end,” he said. “It won’t happen. We the human species are so intelligent and we do such astonishing things. We can fly to the moon but we still do stupid things.”

Charlize Theron Says She’s Enjoyed Gaining Weight for Film Roles: ‘Heaven Would Be Just Potato Chips’

When Charlize Theron has had to put on weight for a movie role, she’s tried to make the most of it.

The actress, 41, transformed her body for her Oscar-winning role in Monster, gaining weight to play serial killer Aileen Wuornos, and more recently, she reportedly put on 35 lbs. to play a mom with three kids in the new comedy-drama Tully, which filmed last year.

Theron opened up about the experience on Sirius XM’s Howard Stern Show on Wednesday.

“Every time I’ve had to do it, I have thoroughly enjoyed it,” she said. “Walking into a place with food and not having any restrictions. No thinking, “this is not good for me.’ It’s a f—– free for all. It’s amazing.”

Some of Theron’s foods of choice? “I love pasta and bread and potato chips. Heaven would be just potato chips for me,” she said.

Although the star has admitted that gaining weight for a role is more difficult now that she’s in her forties.

“It was brutal in every sense,” Theron told Variety of putting on weight for Tully. “This time around, I really felt it in my health. The sugar put me in a massive depression. I was sick. I couldn’t lose the weight. I called my doctor and I said, ‘I think I’m dying!’ And he’s like, ‘No, you’re 41. Calm down.’ ”

Now, Theron, whose new movie, Atomic Blonde is out July 21, is back to her healthy habits.

“ I’ll have a V8. I’ll have three V8s. I love me a V8. I love tomato juice,” she said during  her Howard Stern interview. “That’s also because I’m making two lunch boxes and trying to get two kids ready. I can’t … I can only do … I have to feed them!”

As for her new go-to beverage:  “I’m off coffee right now. I drink a lot of green tea,” Theron said. “I used to love coffee but now I’m into tea now.”

Driver Survives Metal Pipe Crushing His Van on the Highway: ‘Another Foot to the Left and He Would Be Dead’

An Orlando driver is lucky to be alive.

On Saturday morning, a Mack truck driver hauling scrap metal was driving westbound on the State Road 528 exit to Interstate 4 when he lost control of his truck, struck the guardrail and overturned.

As the truck tipped over, a large metal pipe tumbled off the overpass and landed on top of 36-year-old Jesus Armando Escobar’s Pontiac van, crushing it.

“Another foot to the left and he would be dead,” Florida Highway Patrol Sgt. Kim Montes tells PEOPLE. “He had no idea. He didn’t see it coming. It came down right in the middle of his van. It is miraculous he didn’t get more than a scratch on his face.”

Montes says Escobar was able to walk out of the van on his own. “He wasn’t trapped or anything,” she says.

Montes is thankful there wasn’t anyone in the passenger seat. “If there had been any passenger that passenger would have been dead,” she says.

Escobar was taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center and has since been released.

The truck driver, 33-year-old Antonio Santiago Wharton, was uninjured and ticketed for careless driving.

Montes say the ramp has been the site of numerous accidents and fatalities.

“We have had so many crashes there,” she says. ” They take the ramp too fast, hit the guardrail and end up overturning. We have had a couple of fatalities from semis doing that.”

Luckily, not this time.

“I think everybody is just amazed,” says Montes. “In my 23 years this is in the top 3 when you look at a crash and someone survives.”

This Is What ‘Star Wars’ Hyperspace Would Actually Look Like

In the “Star Wars” universe, jumping into hyperspace is illustrated by stars turning to streaks that whizz past as a ship blows right by the speed of light.

While logistically impossible for humans to achieve light speed, science tells us that if we somehow could travel at light speed, hyperspace would look drastically different.

In time for the 40th anniversary of the 1977 release of “Star Wars,” Kyle Hill of Nerdist shows you why and how real hyperspace would be different. And what it would look like! Coooooooooooool!

Real Brides Reveal: How I Would Do Over My Wedding Dress

For BRIDES, by Whitney C. Harris.

Your wedding dress is probably the most memorable piece of clothing you’ll ever put on (as an adult anyway). You wear it on one of the most important days of your life, and it’s a significant investment both emotionally and financially. So you want to make sure you get it right. Many brides often look back on their wedding dress and wish they could have a redo — whether it be a small element like an accessory or rethinking the whole thing. What else do women walking down the aisle wish they had known before picking out their dress? Here are 14 former brides who reveal what they might do differently.

“I would have gone simpler, lighter, and more classically elegant and choose an option in that category that is price-friendly. If I redid my gown, I would try on a couple of simple silk or satin A-lines and see how I feel versus going straight to the bigger and frillier dresses. The last thing I would want is not to be able to dance the night away.” —Natalie N.E., Philadelphia

See More: The 50 Most Beautiful Wedding Cakes Ever

“Looking back, I would have loved a dress that didn’t require so many alterations. I went a bit over my original budget and didn’t realize that I’d have to spend nearly $ 500 to add French bustles as well. I was able to cut costs by ordering a veil online and sticking to ballet flats, but that only helped so much.” —Meghan E., Richmond, Virginia

“If I could do it all over again, I would have gone with a 1960s bohemian/beatnik style, which was just ahead of trend when I was getting married six years ago and not easily found. Something with long sleeves and an open back for my early spring celebration would have been supercool but practical at the same time.” —Maggie N., Sleepy Hollow, New York

“I probably would’ve allowed for a smidge more breathing room or a bit more stretch, as my dress was very snug. I did want a form-fitting silhouette, but it would’ve been nice to not have to suck in all night!” —April H., Honolulu

“I wanted a classic style that wouldn’t look too dated in pictures and chose a strapless piece in ivory satin with a boned corset and slight detailing and gathering at the hip. I had purchased a dress to change into for the evening function, however I never used it as I wanted to keep my wedding dress on and keep the fairy tale going! In hindsight, I wish I had chosen something a bit more ornate and detailed had I known I was going to wear it all day and night. Something with delicate lace on the arms/shoulders or maybe a matching lace over shrug that I could have removed for the evening to make the dress appear different would have been nice. I would also go for a sleeker style that didn’t restrict my movement so much, as the train and skirt on my original dress was quite heavy and it was difficult to dance in!” —Charlotte F., Manchester, England

“I would love to have a wedding dress with cold shoulders and ruffles, two trends that have taken the fashion world by storm over the past year! If I had done it when I had gotten married two years ago, it might have looked less traditional and even tacky, but today, I can see how it would have made the gown so much more chic!” —Pratibha V., New York City

“I would have made sure I tied the corset tighter. As I bent over to fill the unity sand bottle (we had a beach wedding), the audience got a great view of my ‘chicken cutlets’! Oh, to have larger boobs… “ —Jenn W., New York City

“I strongly recommend brides choose something classic that will still be in style for many years to come and avoid trends. I got married in 1988, which was just a horrible year for fashion. My dress was plantation style—I wish I had chosen something more formfitting so years later I could look at pictures and see what a great body I had. But the worst thing was the veil. I chose a veil that was designed as a giant bow. So in all my pictures, which really are lovely, I have this giant bow on my head. Everyone who looks at my pictures just laughs, and for this reason I took down wedding pictures that were hanging in my house. It was a trend then, but I so regret it now.” —Paige E., Woodland Hills, California

See More: Dealing With #DressRegret? You’re Not Alone

“I still think about the dress that I tried on two years ago and let get away. The dress fit like a glove and had enough embellishment that a simple veil would’ve paired perfectly. At the time, it seemed above my budget but honestly might’ve been worth all the time I spent second-guessing my decision. Also, by the time I finished altering my ‘cheaper’ dress and buying its ornate veil, the price wasn’t that much less than the other. For the record, I loved my ‘second’ dress and so did my husband, but it didn’t compare to the Romona Keveza. My advice to brides: If you see something you absolutely love and can’t stop thinking about—and aren’t above pinching pennies if you have to—go for it. For most of us, it’s the one time to wear an amazing gown and feel like a princess.” —Lauren W., Memphis

Chelsea Handler Says Melania Would Be An ‘American Hero’ If She Divorced Donald Trump

Everyone is having a good laugh over Melania Trump publicly humiliating her husband, Donald Trump ― including Chelsea Handler.

Handler, who was promoting her Netflix show on “The View” Monday, was absolutely delighted by video of Melania swatting away Donald’s attempt at holding her hand when the first couple arrived at Ben Gurion International Airport in Israel.

“I have a fantasy. I just want Melania to finally come out and divorce him. She would be an American hero,” Handler told the “View” co-hosts. “We would embrace her if she just said, ‘Listen, this guy’s disgusting, and I know all of his dirty secrets and I’m willing to tell everybody.’”

Even if Melania is willing or wants to divorce Donald and spill his secrets one day, actively embracing her might be a step too far.

In 2011, Melania appeared on “The Joy Behar Show,” where she defended her husband’s false, racist conspiracy theory and repeated his birther claims almost verbatim, according to Vanity Fair.

“Do you want to see President Obama’s birth certificate or not?,” Melania asked Behar. “In one way, it would be very easy if President Obama just show it. It’s not only Donald who wants to see it. It’s American people who voted for him and who didn’t vote for him — they want to see that!”

There are plenty of people who love the idea that Melania seemingly hates her husband. During Trump’s inauguration, a meme was born when, as soon as Trump turned his back to her, Melania’s face completely fell. The Twitterverse went on to use the hashtag #FreeMelania, which was also spotted on signs at Women’s March in January.

Perhaps, in this case, it’s actually easy to mistake schadenfreude for sympathy, but author and sex columnist Dan Savage previously explained that no one should be giving the first lady a pass.

“[T]here are some folks on the left who not only don’t hate her, they view her as some sort of sympathetic figure. The pretty princess in the tower locked up by the orange ogre with the bad combover, a princess desperately blinking out distress signals during swearing-in ceremonies and inaugural balls,” he said during one of his podcasts in March.

Adding, “She’s an immigrant who doesn’t give a s**t about the plight of other immigrants. She’s famously a plagiarist. And she’s brought ruinous lawsuits against journalists and bloggers accusing them of among other things, potentially interfering with her ability to profit off her role as first lady.”

This Is What Trump’s White House Correspondents Dinner Would Look Like

Donald Trump will be the first president in 36 years to be absent at the White House Correspondents Association dinner ― an annual tradition where media figures, politicians and celebrities schmooze for a night.

And while he and his staff likely turned down their invitations because of the president’s deep hatred for the media and so-called “fake news,” the folks over at “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” have figured out how to get Trump to attend: Invite the Russians.

What would that dinner look like? In Trump’s mind (or “The Late Show’s” version of Trump’s mind), it would probably include a Russian man like “Boris Yacanovich” riffing on journalists.

It would feature jokes like:

A journalist criticized the administration. And he was shot dead in the street. In broad daylight.

And other knee-slappers, including:

Another journalist expressed dissent. And he was dropped out of window. Kaboom.

Fingers crossed that the actual WHCA dinner never ends up looking like this.

Here’s What Disney Couples Would Look Like Older And Still In Love

Your favorite Disney couples really did get their happily ever afters.

In the illustrations below, Pedro Fequiere of BuzzFeed imagines what Disney pairs would be up to after the credits rolled.

Cinderella and Prince Charming, for instance, are still making goo-goo eyes at each other and throw a damn good royal ball for their subjects.

Belle and Adam ― yeah, we forgot that was the Beast’s name, too ― continue to live in their castle with Cogsworth, Lumière and Mrs. Potts, who are thankfully now all retired. (They deserve it.)

Mulan and Shang and are still as sassy and competitive as ever.

“I could imagine them being really competitive at this age and training kids who want to be in the royal army,” Fequiere told The Huffington Post.

Now that Ariel and Eric’s daughter Melody is all grown up (yes, they had a kid. See: “The Little Mermaid II”), the empty nesters are busy traveling the world.

As for Aladdin and Jasmine, they’re in power following the death of Jasmine’s dad. (RIP, Sultan.) The Genie pops into the palace every now and then to sleep on the royal couch. (And of course Jasmine is still rocking the crop top and giving us major hair goals.)

Fequiere said he created the illustrations so fans could get a sense of closure over the fate of their favorite characters.

“Most stories start off with ‘once upon a time…’ and end with a ‘happily ever after…,” he said. “I thought it would be really interesting to see what that looked like.”

Head over to BuzzFeed to see the rest of the illustrations.

SHOPPING DEALS UPDATE:

3 Things We Wish Bill Maher Would

First of all, a confession: I probably agree with 90% of Bill’s Maher’s political/ideological positions, so the piddling complaints that follow aren’t the result of any fundamental difference in philosophy or political doctrine.

As far as I’m concerned, Bill Maher’s view of the world is very much in synch with my own. In fact, if he and I were to sit down at a neighborhood bar (I with a cheap domestic beer, he with a top-of-the-line reefer) and discuss politics, we could very likely go a whole hour without a single meaningful dispute.

My beef is more “personal” than ideological, more about “style” than “substance.” Alas, it seems that somewhere along the line Mr. Bill Maher has fallen hopelessly in love with himself. This has altered his act, and not in a good way. As a consequence of that high self-regard, he now comes off as some sort of a “latter day prophet” or elder statesman rather than a stand-up comic.

With all due respect, here are 3 things I wish Bill would do:

1. Grab on to a little humility, dude. You’re funny, you’re quick, you’re entertaining, but you’re no comedic or political genius. Mort Sahl, Richard Pryor and George Carlin were geniuses. As talented as you are, you ain’t one of those guys. Also, didn’t Mort Sahl, George Carlin and Richard Pryor write their own material? At the end of your HBO show we see listed the names of 6-8 co-writers. Show a little modesty.

2. Don’t be such an obvious “applause whore.” It is so damned annoying to watch you stop talking–to stop delivering your jokes and come to a complete halt–so long as even one person in the audience is still applauding. It makes you look insecure and weirdly “needy.”

You should do what Jimmy Kimmel does during his monologue. Understandably not wanting to have his next joke drowned out by applause, Kimmel will wait a moment for the applause to die down after a particularly funny remark.

But one thing Kimmel doesn’t do is destroy the pace. He doesn’t stand there waiting for that one appreciative guy in Row 3 to stop clapping before continuing. He keeps it going, which is what you need to do, Bill. Stop milking it.

3. Also, in the same vein, don’t look at the audience with dismay or disapproval when they don’t laugh at a particular gag or when, God forbid, they actually boo or groan at something you say. Again, not only does that make you seem prickly and unnecessarily “desperate,” it disrupts the flow; it alters the mood.

You need to remind yourself that this is a comedy show, not a townhall meeting, political convention or self-improvement seminar. Instead of “challenging” or scolding the audience (and I’ve seen you do this too many times) when they appear to disagree or underappreciate one of your gags, you need to keep your shtick rolling.

Finally, you have to remind yourself that, as perceptive, well informed and sharp as you may be (and you are all of those things), you are not a philosopher. You are not an icon and you’re not a fountain of wisdom. In the final analysis you’re a comic, and a damned good one. Basically, you need to channel Shecky Greene rather than Walter Lippman. Is that too much to ask?

Teen Plans To Tell The Immigrant Stories Trump’s Administration Never Would

When Valeria Alvarado learned that President Donald Trump had called for a weekly list of crimes committed by undocumented immigrants, she took action.

The 19-year-old Villanova University student decided to create an organization that would fight Trump’s actions by highlighting positive immigrant stories. Alvarado recently started the Facebook page “We, Too, Are America,” a name she acknowledges has also been used by other pro-immigrant movements on Twitter and to celebrate Black History Month.

“When I read [Trump’s executive] order, I knew it would unfairly define a community of over 11 million people by the actions of a few,” Alvarado told The Huffington Post on Thursday. “Being close to the community, I decided to do a counter-list where we would publish a weekly list of accomplishments by the undocumented community.”

The positive response she received over the initial idea prompted her to open up the platform to not only include stories about undocumented immigrants but also feature achievements by refugees and the immigrant community as a whole. The student says these groups are also negatively affected by Trump’s recent directives.

Alvarado is an immigrant herself; she moved from Monterrey, Mexico to the United States at the age 4. The teen is currently spending a semester abroad in Rwanda studying post-genocide restoration.

“I could not believe my eyes when I first read Trump’s plan to publish this list,” Alvardo told Remezcla in a recent interview. “This ‘crime list’ idea is not new. The Nazis used to publish a list of Jewish crimes before the genocide started. The RTML radio in Rwanda used to convince people that Tutsis were to blame for the crimes of the few. I am not trying to homogenize these situations with each other, but it is unbelievable that we are repeating history’s same mistakes.”

Alvarado, who is a U.S. citizen, recognizes that not all immigrants have the opportunity to become legal.

“I was lucky enough to become a citizen in 2013,” she told HuffPost. “I use the word ‘luck’ because I believe the citizenship process requires more than just hard work, it requires luck. There are so many in our community still stuck in the process, after years and years of working hard towards becoming a citizen.”

The “We, Too, Are America” Facebook page has accrued more than 1,000 followers in its first six days. Alvarado and her small team plan to publish their first weekly list of immigrant stories on Monday, Feb. 6.

“We, Too, Are America wants to publish stories from all walks of life and all professions,” she said. “Our goal is not to build the ‘model minority’ image, but instead, counter a false image with a positive and more diverse image of our community.”

The 2016 election was the first time Alvarado had the opportunity to vote for a presidential candidate, a privilege she took seriously. While the outcome was not what she expected, she intends to keep fighting for her ideals.

“Voting for the first time was a bittersweet moment,” she told HuffPost. “I was happy I was able to go in the voting booth to exercise my rights. I also had to think about the privilege I have as a citizen; our undocumented friends and family did not have an opportunity to vote in an election that would alter their lives. The three million more Americans and I that won the popular vote are disappointed in the outcome, pero como siempre me ha dicho mi papa: ‘es tiempo para ponerte las pilas’ (which translates to, ‘but like my dad always told me: ‘it’s time to get to work’’). A Trump presidency will not bring us down. We will not stand by silently.”

How Dolly Parton’s Nails Helped Lily Tomlin Predict Their Comedy 9 to 5 Would Be a Success

Lily Tomlin can still remember the moment she knew her comedy 9 to 5 with Jane Fonda and Dolly Parton would be a success.

“I remember Dolly came out on set and played the 9 to 5 song for us on her fingernails. I just thought this movie is going to make it because that song will make it,” Tomlin tells PEOPLE.

The 1980 hit comedy followed three working women living out their fantasies of getting even with their sexist boss.

Tomlin, who currently stars opposite Fonda in her Emmy-nominated role on the Netflix series Grace and Frankie, often keeps in touch with her 9 to 5 costars and says the friendship they formed while making the film is one of her fondest memories.

The three women will be reunited at the Screen Actors Guild Awards on Jan. 29, where Fonda and Parton will present Tomlin with the 53rd SAG Life Achievement Award.

For more on Tomlin, check out this week’s issue of PEOPLE, on newsstands now.

“These two girls are still buddies,” Tomlin tells PEOPLE. “Dolly is whatever you see is what you get. She is a darling person, fun and lively. Jane is so innocent and sweet and kind. I just laugh when I am around her.”

Tomlin says it was Fonda who brought the three of them together in 9 to 5 and adds that she changed the tone of film after she saw Tomlin perform at the Ahmanson theater in Los Angeles one night.

“It was going to be a serious movie, but when she saw me she said, ‘It’s got to be a comedy and I have to have Lily in it.’ On the way home, she heard Dolly’s song on the radio and the rest is history.”

The 23rd annual Screen Actors Guild Awards will be simulcast live on TNT and TBS on Sunday, Jan. 29, at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT.

Would You Be Too Ashamed To Display Your Child’s Wedding Photo?

This Thanksgiving, reach out and give your LGBTQ sons and daughters an even tighter hug. It’s what we all need right now but, for different reasons, might not get!

On a recent trip home to England with my American wife of 10 years, Laurie, I had to face my marriage not being accepted by my parents. It wasn’t exactly a surprise, but nonetheless it hurt me, a lot, and the saying “A picture is worth a thousand words” rang so true for me.

Whenever visiting my parents home, one of the first things you see when you walk into their living room is a dresser covered in photo frames with pictures of all family members on their wedding days.

So, after Laurie and I got married, we framed one of our wedding photographs and gave it to them. It was graciously received and placed on the dresser along with the other photographs.

But when we arrived on our most recent visit and I looked at the photographs on the dresser, I saw our photograph was not there anymore. I asked my mother about it and she said she had “lost it,” which seemed like a strange answer to me.

Later, when my parents were out of the room, I found what I knew was the frame, I undid the back and sure enough, there was our wedding photo, stuck behind someone else’s.

The next day, my mother had a hospital appointment and I wanted to take her, Laurie came along too as she wanted to support me as I had supported her and her dad.

When the nurse came out to talk to my mother she asked kindly, “Are these your daughters with you today?” To which my mother answered, “No, my daughter and her friend!”

I was mortified but immediately said “No, she’s my wife!” These two things happening within 24 hours gave me a sinking feeling and made me realize I had been right when I was young, thinking I wouldn’t be accepted for who I was. That was what had kept me closeted until the age of 42.

On the complete flip side to this is Laurie’s dad, Tom, who always accepted our marriage, and even when we were in the midst of our fight for marriage equality, wanted to do his bit to help.

He always proudly displayed photos of us on his wall at the nursing home for all to see, Laurie even took a photo of him holding a picture of us, and she shared it with Gay Marriage USA in support of marriage equality.

His photo got over 2,500 likes and had so many incredible messages saying what a wonderful parent he is; he was even more thrilled when he was given the “Awesome Dad Award 2013” because of his support of us.

This trip back to England was a very poignant one for us; it was the first trip since Laurie’s dad had passed away just the month before, following a short battle with brain cancer.

I had wanted this trip to be filled with nothing but love for Laurie, but instead was greeted by my parents with glaringly obvious homophobia.

Over the years, there have been many occasions that my parents lack of acceptance was obvious and I have always tried to not let it bother me, even though it did. But this time was too much.

Laurie and I had exciting news that we wanted to share about an upcoming project we had been working on, but because it involved LGBTQ issues, they outright said they were “not interested in hearing about it, it isn’t something that affects US!”

When it got to this point I really couldn’t take it anymore. As I sat across from them, they both starred back at me with what felt like disgust and hatred.

“I’ve never expected you to wave a rainbow flag in support of same sex marriage but at least be happy for me and proud to show a photo of me and Laurie. Most parents are proud when their children achieve important things in life but you just seem ashamed!” I said to my parents, just an hour before we were leaving for the airport.

My mother just got up and left room telling me “I have nothing further to say.”

I am not writing this for sympathy, I am writing it for acceptance, so other parents may think about being more accepting and love their children for who they are. Because it does matter, whatever their age.

This Thanksgiving I am very grateful that I am loved unconditionally by my wife and my sons who couldn’t be more supportive. I’m also thankful for wonderful family and friends who go out of their way to show their love and acceptance too.

If you are a parent out there be a Tom and love your child with all your heart all for all your life!

Teachers’ ‘Les Mis’ Flash Mob Parody Would Make Even Javert Smile

Going back to school after summer can be misérable. But not if you’re a student in West Des Moines, Iowa.

At a welcome-back meeting for the school district’s staff, the superintendent’s speech was cut short by a flash-mob of teachers performing a parody of “One Day More” from Les Misérables.

Including lyrics like “Do we known the common core?” and “Will my lesson be a bore?” the delightful — and extremely well-rehearsed — rendition of the Broadway classic perfectly captures the qualms and trepidations about returning to the classroom after summer vacation.

While these lyrics are on point, so are the performers. Seriously, they’re so good, and according to the video’s YouTube description, only 12 of these raw talents are music teachers.

The video was posted on YouTube on August 23 and has since racked up over 1 million views, as of Thursday.

Students in West Des Moines better be stoked to return to school after seeing this. With these fantastic educators by their side during the school year, they certainly won’t be on their own.

Bella Hadid on Her Early Modeling Days: “If I Didn’t Book a Job, I Would Cry”

There was a time when the world just knew Bella Hadid as little sister to Gigi, but, my, how things have changed. The raven-haired beauty has joined her sister on the Tom Ford runway and in a steamy Balmain campaign, while also notching her own accomplishments (like a CR Fashion Book spread and Botkier campaign). And while the girls have their own fashion vibes going on, there are plenty of similarities, including a propensity for putting lots of pressure on themselves.

“I’ve always been really hard on myself. If I didn’t book a job, I would cry,” Bella told Editorialist, also admitting to being “so nervous in the beginning.” And sister Gigi also dealt with the same pressure: before she was linked to Victoria’s Secret Pink, she had spent time being bummed out over not booking the lingerie giant’s famous runway show.

bella-hadid-black-white-prabal-gurung-dress

Bella in Prabal Gurung at this year’s Tony Awards

According to Bella, her off-duty style has led some people to think of her as a black sheep who rebels and does drugs but, in reality, it’s the furthest from the truth. “I promise I’m a good girl. I never do drugs. I literally order sushi, watch Law & Order, and go to sleep at 9 o’clock every night. I’m a grandmother.”

Plus, that rebellious style? It’s actually a product of moving to New York City and her mother, Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star Yolanda Foster.

“In L.A. I did a lot of vintage flea market dresses and Doc Martens. My mom was like, ‘You’re going to need to tone it down with those floral dresses when you go to New York.'”

bella-hadid-new-york-style

Bella’s standard New York style, on display from earlier this summer, involves a lot of black and ’90s staples (think crop tops, high-waisted jeans, and tiny round sunglasses). Still, the model hasn’t totally abandoned her original style. When she touches down on the West Coast, it’s back to breezy dresses and clunky boots, as evidenced by the outfit she chose for a Beverly Hills stroll with her dad last week.

J.K. Rowling Reveals What Her Horcrux Would Be (If She Had To Make One)

Dear, sweet J.K. Rowling would never want to make a horcrux, of course.

The deed — if you remember from the Harry Potter book series — is accomplished through murder, which splits a wizard’s soul apart, allowing him to conceal a portion of it in an object of his choosing. Lord Voldemort, being a horrible git, created seven of them to achieve immortality.

So, yes, Rowling would never want to make a horcrux. But if she did, we learned via Twitter on Friday, it’d probably be a tea bag.

Aww, Joanne. The author revealed her choice on the social media platform in a discussion with fans on tea-brewing. For the uncultured heathens non-Brits out there: Heat the kettle, not the mug. Add one tea bag per person, and one for the pot. Milk goes in last.

And never underestimate Rowling’s Twitter presence – she’s notoriously good at responding to fans. Especially if you’ve got a good pun.

Josh Gad Would ‘Jump At The Opportunity’ For A ‘Book Of Mormon’ Movie

A big-screen adaptation of  Matt Stone and Trey Parker’s riotous Broadway hit ”The Book of Mormon” has been rumored for several years, and while there’s nothing new to report on whether it’ll actually happen, Josh Gad would be totally down to take part.

Gad, who originated the role of Elder Cunningham in the play in 2011, dropped by HuffPost Live on Monday with director Chris Columbus to discuss their film “Pixels,” which opens July 24. During the conversation, a fan asked Gad whether he would reprise his part if a film happened, and the actor said he may have aged out of the character.

“Does this look like the face of an 18-year-old, sweetie?” Gad joked.

Answering the question more seriously, the actor said he would “jump at the opportunity” if Stone and Parker wanted him.

“I would actually love to,” he said. “I would read the phone book if Trey and Matt asked me to on film.”

9 Wedding Vows Divorce Attorneys Would Write For You

They may not seem like die-hard romantics but divorce lawyers are surprisingly well-suited to the job of writing wedding vows. After all, they’ve seen firsthand the types of problems that can chip away at otherwise happy relationships — and know what it takes to stay out of their offices.

With that in mind, we asked divorce attorneys around the country to share the wedding vows they’d write for engaged couples . See what they had to say below.

“Watching our wedding video will serve to remind us of how much we want to be together in moments when we take each other for granted. Remembering happy occasions and how we felt that day will help us get through the difficult ones.” — Randall M. Kessler, an Atlanta, Georgia-based divorce attorney and the author of Divorce: Protect Yourself, Your Kids and Your Future

“We’re bound to have disagreements from time to time — but I vow to fight fair. Starting a fight at 2 a.m. when we are both exhausted is not fighting fair. Name calling, eye-rolling, and belittling each other in front of friends and family (or the future children!) is not fair. Physical violence of any sort is never fair (or acceptable.) If we have to fight, let’s at least fight civilly.” – Karen A. Covy, a Chicago, Illinois-based divorce attorney

“Yes, we may have laughed about our different ideas on raising kids when we were dating, but when our children are born, I promise to work hard with you to develop a unified front on how we parent. Of course there will be some give and take in the process, but I promise to devote time to making sure we are consistent in discipline, diet and school with our kids. This way, I’ll never need to chastise you for your parenting style because there will only be one parenting style: Ours.” Christian Denmon, a Florida-based divorce attorney

“I promise to ride it out with you if life gets dull or boring and not automatically assume there’s something wrong with our marriage. Life is full of dull moments but it’s also full of a lot of fun moments. We’ll experience a little of each and learn to enjoy and embrace it all.” — Caroline Y. Choi, a San Diego, California-based divorce attorney

“It may seem difficult at times but let’s respect each other’s families, including our parents. As imposing, opinionated or needy as some of our family members may be, they helped make us who we are — and showing respect will become even more important if we have kids.”  – Randall M. Kessler

“Communication is the oxygen of marriage. If something is bothering you, I want you to be able to talk to me about it. (If we’re so afraid of causing a fight and we don’t address our problems as they crop up, our marriage will eventually explode like Mount Vesuvius.) Let’s agree that it’s best for both of us to deal with issues as they arise. I promise to listen to your problems, even if they don’t seem like such a big deal to me.”  – Karen A. Covy

“Over time, we may have different responsibilities with money in our marriage. Regardless of how we define our roles, I promise to make sure we’re transparent with our finances. I’ll make sure that we both can see income, expenses, assets and debts at any given time. And if the financial numbers tell us a story we don’t like, we’ll do the hard work of working out a financial plan that we both can agree on. I will not allow us to put our heads in the sand until it’s too late.” — Christian Denmon

“I know it seems counter-intuitive but if we both focus on meeting each other’s needs, we’ll each be happier and that will keep our marriage strong. If we put our future children’s needs first, our own needs will have to be put on backburner and our marriage will weaken. And just to be realistic, if we do end up divorcing, let’s then vow to put our kids’ needs front and center. Doing what is truly best for them and making their needs our top priority will help minimize the trauma of our split.”  – Karen A. Covy

“Let’s agree to this: Threatening divorce to ‘scare’ each other into doing what we want is not the proper way to converse with each other.  If we use the word divorce, it should only be after all other efforts to resolve our differences have been exhausted. Even then, it should be discussed in a polite, non-confrontational and cooperative way. We each deserve that much.” – Randall M. Kessler

What Wedding Experts Would Have Done Differently For Their Own Big Days

by Jillian Kramer, BRIDES

Every bride worries she’ll regret some wedding decisions — and it turns out, even the pros look back on their big days with some regrets. So we asked four wedding planners to share what they’d change about their weddings so that you won’t make the same mistakes!

“I wish we’d splurged on a really kick-ass photographer.”
Janice Carnevale, owner of Bellwether Events, tied the knot on April 1 and embraced the quirky date with her own inventive touches — red and lime-colored linens, argyle-patterned invitations, and a cake iced in chocolate frosting. And while she doesn’t regret her eclectic choices, she does wish she’d spent more on a photographer “and paid for an album up front,” she advises.

“I wish that I had not been chewing gum for the reception.”
Michele Velazquez, co-owner of pop-up wedding planning company The Wedding Bomb, wed in a chic off-white and purple affair in Los Angeles, where a highlight was “these amazing artichoke appetizers filled with garlic,” she says, “so I put gum in my mouth to have fresh breath. But in our wedding video, you can see me chomping away — and I shriek every time I see it!” Velazquez now warns brides to find ways other than chewing gum to freshen breath.

“We didn’t hire a videographer, and I still regret it to this day.”
Courtney Wolf, wedding planner and marketing director of Invision Events, says her blush-hued, formal wedding “was the absolute most amazing day of my life.” But because she and her then-fiancé bore the brunt of the bill for their big day, they made cuts when they questioned whether something was “worth it” — including a videographer. “While our photographer blew us away with the effortless and perfect capture of our day, there is nothing that can compare to hearing our vows or me giggle while I’m getting ready or my husband’s emotion as the church doors open and he sees me as his bride, all in real time,” she says. “I do wish I had that piece of the puzzle, even three years later.”

“I would not have had sparklers!”
Victoria Canada, owner of Victoria Canada Weddings and Events, held a festive affair that featured a Mariachi band and margaritas. The party was so much fun, she recalls, she didn’t want to leave. “I would have kept the bar open and kept dancing,” she says, “but we had sparklers — and our guests had them lit and we pretty much had to run! Now, I actually discourage brides from them.” One thing she doesn’t regret? Saying “no” to an open bar. “Our goal was to have a great honeymoon, and that meant having to make some concessions,” she explains. “So, we did not have an open bar — we had beer, wine and margaritas. I think an extra week on the Mediterranean was worth my friends not having a vodka tonic!”

Teen Who Was Told She Would Never Speak Is Now A Talented Singer

This young woman has something to sing about.

Born with a birth defect, Amber Simone Chinn was not expected to breathe, much less speak, on her own. But now, the 19-year-old is a powerful singer, and a video of her performing has gone viral, WGRZ reported.

Chinn was born with craniosynostosis — a defect in which the joints between the skull bones close prematurely — which led to a procedure at the age of 6 months, from which she was not expected to fully recover, the news outlet reported. Chinn’s parents were told she would never talk, but she beat the odds, calling her recovery a miracle.

At a friend’s graduation party earlier this month, Chinn was caught on camera singing by the pool. The video of her performing “The Worst,” by Jhene Akio, was uploaded to Facebook and has received over 2 million views as of Tuesday.

“It’s hard to grasp,” Chinn told WGRZ. “I have confidence, but I never thought me sitting by the pool, a random video would be so viral.”

Now, the young musician is a student at SUNY Buffalo State and is working with local music producers on an original song. On her GoFundMe page to create a music label, Chinn cites her performance of “The Worst” as a “music video about women empowerment and the need to confront and walk away from domestic abuse.”

Last December, another young woman shared a small musical moment to address a larger issue. Single mom Kimberly Henson uploaded a video of herself singing Sam Smith’s version of Whitney Houston’s “How Will I Know” to her baby daughter. Overnight, she reached more than 20 million people on Facebook alone, WLTX reported. In January, she released an original song called “Tiny Hearts” to share her experiences as a single parent.

“I may have taken a different path and missed little things here and there,” Henson told The Huffington Post. “But coming home and being a little person’s superhero means a lot of more in the end.”

This Bride Didn’t Think Her Sick Dad Would Make It To Her Wedding. But He Did.

Andre Pearson never thought he would make it to his daughter’s wedding.

The 61-year-old arrived at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, in March with heart and kidney failure, according to a press release from the hospital. At the time, doctors thought his condition was so bad that he only had one more year to live. He underwent surgery to repair his heart valve and dialysis treatments, which improved his health, but he was told he was still too sick to fly to his daughter Alexandra Price’s wedding. The plan was for him to watch the Palm Springs, California, ceremony Saturday on FaceTime.

But last week, Pearson’s medical team did a reevaluation and decided he was well enough to fly. They told him they were going to send him to the ceremony at Desert Ridge Estate in Indio so he could surprise his girl, according to local TV station KESQ.

“I really didn’t expect it. It came out of left field,” Pearson told The Huffington Post during a phone call Thursday. “I said, ‘No way this could be happening.’ The first thing I thought was Oprah coming out of the hallway. That would’ve been my next thought, that Oprah’s got a trip for me or something. But it was good.”

His surprise was only matched by his daughter’s, who burst into tears Friday when she opened the door of the house where she was staying and saw her father outside.

TK gifs

“Everybody was excited,” Pearson said. “Especially when I was rolled in the wheelchair into the house where she was at and she had no idea that it was coming, but it was all of a sudden tears everywhere. Tears of joy.”

Price was thrilled.

“I knew he wasn’t coming because I knew the circumstances and everything and I just feel shocked; it feels like a dream,” she told KESQ. “It was amazing since he wasn’t supposed to be here. It was just amazing to have him, sickness and all, here and it just made me feel really happy and whole and complete.”

Pearson, the brother of former Dallas Cowboy Drew Pearson, said his favorite part was getting to walk Price, who is his youngest daughter, down the aisle.

TK gifs

“I gave her away at the altar, that was very special, as well. Then I got a chance to go back to my seat and I started crying right there,” he said. Pearson also got a son that day, he said. “My wife and I never had any sons; we have all girls. I told [Price’s husband] that I just gained another son,” said Pearson, who has another son-in-law who lives in Texas. “Now I have two sons and I’m thankful for that. It’s wonderful that they’re the right guys and will take care of my girls, especially my youngest, my baby.”

After successful treatment at the Mayo Clinic, Pearson is now well enough to likely return home to Nebraska within the next month, according to the clinic’s press release.

Here’s What It Would Look Like If Inspirational Quotes Were Honest, Vol. 4

If a tree falls in the woods, and you’re not there to hear it, wouldn’t you want it to fall on that friend who posts WAY too many inspirational quotes on Facebook?

Ah, the inspirational quote. On social media, it’s like a language all its own. Whatever event is happening in someone’s life, their is an eye-catching image and some pretty-fonted words to express the emotion attached to that event. But sometimes these inspirational quotes reach just a bit too far, and they need to be brought back down to earth.

Here are some of those inspirational quotes you’re always sharing, and their more honest translations:

Would You Go on ‘The Briefcase’?

The Hunger Games was supposed to be fiction, but maybe it was prophetic. Now comes The Briefcase, CBS’s new reality show that pits desperate middle-class families against each other for financial survival. This seems more appropriate for dystopian science fiction than contemporary prime time, and the instinct is to kill the messenger: How dare CBS air this garbage?!

My problem with this and other so-called “poverty porn” shows isn’t that television networks are exploiting economic desperation for entertainment. My problem is that it no longer seems strange that middle-class families are a couple of bad breaks from poverty. Being broke is no longer just for the poor. Unless you’re one of the lucky few on the good side of the wealth divide, you could be in the middle class and just barely getting by, hoping to make it month to month.

The Briefcase is like Sophie’s Choice for the financially strapped. Every week, two families experiencing tough times are each handed a briefcase full of $ 101,000 — with one horrible condition. They have to decide how much to keep and how much to share with the other family.

Each family learns about the other’s hardships, so we witness a wrenching decision: However much each family keeps for its own survival is therefore denied to a family all-too-similar to theirs. All the while, the audience — Americans just like them — sits in voyeuristic judgment.

Poverty porn is not limited to our country or our age. Over in Great Britain, where the accents can fool you into thinking that they are made of better stuff, the BBC has a new reality show called Britain’s Hardest Grifter. Over five weeks, 25 unemployed and low-wage workers will compete by doing various jobs. The “least effective workers” will be eliminated after each episode, and the winners get £15,000, which is around $ 23,000.

The drama of watching poor people slug it out for cash prizes might be new to television but it’s been around for years. During the Great Depression, people also enjoyed watching their fellow struggling citizens entertain them by competing in dance marathons, six-day bicycle races, and flagpole sitting contests. The contestants won by enduring misery, but then didn’t everyone back then?

This was also about the time that escapist stories enjoyed a heyday, notably “Little Orphan Annie,” a comic strip that spawned a radio show and two film adaptations during the 1930s. And really, what is The Briefcase but a combination of the humiliation of publicly enduring pain for the promise of being rescued from financial ruin?

If modern-day poverty porn is just the reinvention of a dark period in American history, what’s different here is that the middle-class no longer represents safe harbor from the storm. It used to be that the American Dream was to buy a home, put your kids through college, and retire comfortably. Nowadays, good luck with that.

It’s more than a feeling of insecurity. The American middle class has not gotten a raise since the late 1990s, and the average family’s net worth is lower (adjusted for inflation) than it was in 1989. We’re closer to the edge than our parents were at this age, and it’s stressful. If this rings true to you, you’re not alone. A report by the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis found that the middle class is better defined by stress and anxiety than stability and a solid income.

This rings true to me. I barely kept my business open during the Great Recession, but I ended up having to sell the house because the mortgage payments were too much. Things are better now, and debts are getting paid off, but I haven’t taken a deep breath since 2009. Maybe you know the feeling.

As easy as it is to sit in judgment of The Briefcase, it’s harder for me to sit at a remove and watch it happen to other people, because the problems the contestants face aren’t so different from mine that they can’t be solved by a pile of money. The conceit is disgusting and exploitative, but I can’t help wondering how many people like me would go on the show.

Would you?

While the Glamour staff loves Sex and the City as much as the next girl, we’re constantly chatting about characters’ outfits that made us want to throw the remote (like bra tops and hot pants on a cold fall day). Carrie and crew had some of TV’s best fashion moments, but that still won’t stop the ever-growing list of things that, though fantastic, were totally unrealistic. Nine things we’ve come up with so far:

04-rom-com-halloween-costumes-sex-and-the-city

#1. Small clutches working as everyday bags.
Take a look at the majority of all the ladies’ outfits (there are some priceless Carrie looks here and here) and you’ll notice that, more often than not, everyone’s got tiny clutches tucked under their arms. For most women, the petite size makes an appearance on nights out or at formal events since it’s only really suitable where you don’t need more than a credit card and cell phone. For day-to-day life? Please. Where’s the extra space for snacks, gym clothes, and reading material?

#2. Heels 24/7.
The entire world knows Carrie and the gals love heels, but still…there’s some practicality to consider (especially in New York City). A gorgeous stiletto definitely has its moment, but so do ballet flats, espadrilles, and comfy sneakers. In real life, they would slip on something easier every now and then, especially if the day involved skipping from uptown to down for meetings, shopping trips, and drinks with friends.

#3. A normal salary supporting that shopping habit.
Sure, if Carrie were a high-level investment banker or the CEO of some mega corporation, she could shop like crazy. But as a newspaper columnist? The ability to live alone in a spacious apartment on a tree-lined block, constantly shop for pricey shoes, and wear a designer wardrobe would never happen—even if she had access to all the sample sales in the world.

#4. Miranda’s lawyer clothes.
Viewers got it: Miranda was the serious one with a high-powered job. Still, she spent half the series in boxy suits with bad cuts and, let’s be real: if you had three BFFs who were as into style as her pals, you know someone would have given her some tough love and dragged her to Bloomingdale’s.

#5. Keeping clothes forever.
You know the glorious montage in the movie in which the girls judge as Carrie whips through the history of her closet, trying on all sorts of outfits? It was cute to watch but so not realistic. With the rise of resale and the physical introduction of new purchases, a girl’s forced to weed out stuff every now and then (and not in just one fell swoop).

#6. All the tummy action.
Crop tops are cool now, but back in SATC‘s heyday? Not as much. Between Carrie and Samantha, there was no shortage of midriff-flashing outfits, which, honestly, would have stuck out like a sore thumb.

#7. Absolutely no weather-appropriate shoes whatsoever.
No one ever acknowledged rain much more than opening an umbrella (or holding a newspaper over her head). Where are the wellies or, at the least, simple flats you wouldn’t mind tossing if they were destroyed? For a woman who loved her shoes as much as Carrie, she for sure would have been into taking better care of them. This doubles for snow boots for all four.

#8. Or cold-weather-ready coats.
Throughout all the show’s seasons, a cold winter would have definitely had to strike New York City, meaning the girls should have bundled up a lot more than anyone ever did. Carrie’s beloved fur makes frequent appearances, but paired with bare legs and flimsy dresses (and all the women were guilty of this). Fashion’s awesome, but sometimes a girl needs a long down coat.

#9. The lack of cross-pollination.
In real life, few women fit a style category quite as neatly as Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte, and Miranda did. It’s a storytelling conceit, but let’s be real: If four women spent as much time hanging together as they did, everyone would wind up picking and choosing from one another’s styles, inspired to try and mix it up a little.

This Is What The World Would Look Like If Men Got Periods

The world would be a lot different if dudes had menstrual cycles.

In honor of Menstrual Hygiene Day on May 28, WaterAid, a British organization that brings clean water, sanitation and hygiene to impoverished parts of the world, launched a new campaign called “If Men Had Periods.” As part of the campaign, they created two parodies reimagining the typical tampon commercials if dudes got their periods.

While the parodies have a lighter tone, the campaign hopes to highlight the 1.25 billion women who don’t have access to a toilet during their periods and the stigma women experience during their menstrual cycles.

“Men would brag about them on Facebook, #imonmyperiod would probably trend regularly on Twitter, and tampon adverts would be fronted by celebrities.”

“Every day 800 million women have their period, and yet most of us consider it an embarrassing and taboo subject,” WaterAid’s Chief Executive Officer Barbara Frost said in a press release. “There are even elaborate euphemisms to avoid saying the word ‘period.’ So we have had a bit of fun trying to imagine whether attitudes would be different if men had periods.”

WaterAid believes the universe would be a lot different if men had to experience a monthly period. “If men had periods it would be considered a sign of virility,” a WaterAid press release reads. “Men would brag about them on Facebook, #imonmyperiod would probably trend regularly on Twitter, and tampon adverts would be fronted by celebrities.”

WaterAid surveyed 2,000 people to find out what they thought the world would look like if men had their periods. Almost 80 percent of respondents thought the sports world would change if men had their periodS. Nearly 30 percent of people believed sports commentators would openly discuss how player’s menstrual cycles would affect performance.

Basically, if men had periods there would be nothing shameful about menstrual cycles.

“Menstruation is an important women’s issue. One in three women around the world do not have access to a toilet during their periods and having to find a safe place after dark is both undignified and risky,” Frost said. “Millions more suffer discrimination because of beliefs that they are ‘contaminated’ or ‘impure.’ Stigma about menstruation means women do not seek the help and information they need, while the lack of hygiene facilities in schools is a major reason for young girls dropping out of education when they reach puberty.”

In order to stop this stigma, WaterAid is encouraging people to sign their “Make It Happen” petition to help get everyone access to clean water and toilets around the world.

“Female representation in politics in many parts of the world is still low, so perhaps if men had periods this issue would get the attention that it deserves,” Frost said. “More needs to be done to ‘make it happen’ so that every women and girl has access to water, sanitation and hygiene by 2030.”

Here’s Which ‘Lost’ Character Damon Lindelof Would Send To ‘Tomorrowland’

In Disney’s “Tomorrowland,” Britt Robertson’s Casey discovers a pin that transports her to a futuristic world when she touches it. In the film, directed by Brad Bird (“Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol”) and co-written by Damon Lindelof (“Lost”), Tomorrowland is faraway utopia created by the world’s top innovators, artists and scientists.

The Huffington Post asked Lindelof which “Lost” character he would send to Tomorrowland to better mankind’s future.

“I think that I’d probably send Hurley,” Lindelof told us. The fan favorite character would help Tomorrowland with his positive thinking, something largely essential to the movie’s plot, Lindelof explained.

“It’s always just nice to have someone around to lighten things up. He’s got a great sense of humor,” Lindelof said. Hurley “tended to always be the glass half full guy.”

We couldn’t agree more, and we bet Hurley would take full advantage of the jetpacks there.

While working on “Tomorrowland,” Lindelof also spent his time on the upcoming season of HBO’s “The Leftovers.” The series, co-created by Lindelof and inspired by Tom Perrotta’s novel of the same name, follows those who remain after the mysterious, sudden disappearance of two percent of the world’s population. It is one of the bleakest, most depressing shows on television, a stark contrast to the optimistic “Tomorrowland.”

Lindelof said the HBO show “was constantly threatening to infect” his latest Disney adventure. “The gravitational pull of that feeling, [that] darkness and depression, is so much more powerful than the optimistic and bright pull of ‘Tomorrowland,'” he said.

“When you spend time in a creative world like that, it does affect your mood. I was probably not the most pleasant person to live with,” he added.

When “The Leftovers” returns for its second season, at least we’ll have “Tomorrowland” to yank us out of our depression.

Or we can just think more like Hurley.

“Tomorrowland” is now playing in theaters.

Why Chris Harrison Would Never Go On ‘The Bachelor’

Sorry to dash your hopes “Bachelor” and “Bachelorette” fans, but host Chris Harrison has no interest in being the next “Bachelor.”

In an interview with HuffPost Live Monday, the host of the ABC reality show said it doesn’t make sense for him to follow in the footsteps of Juan Pablo, Chris Soules and all the rest.

“Here’s the thing about being ‘The Bachelor’: I believe in it and I love the show,” he said. “But I have been producing this show — hosting it and been behind the curtain — for 13 years. To come on and act like I don’t have any knowledge of how this is put together — you have to have a little sense of naiveté and innocence coming into this. I just know a little too much.”

That said, Harrison admitted he hasn’t had much luck dating since splitting from college sweetheart Gwen in 2012. He called himself “tragically undateable” given his busy schedule. (Hey, we still believe in your journey for love, Chris.)

In an interview with GQ magazine earlier this year, the 43-year-old host entertained the idea of having his ex-wife appear as the next “Bachelorette.”

“Now, there’s an idea,” Harrison said. “There’s a part of me, the producer side, that knows it would be epic television, good or bad. It could be like the Hindenburg — the greatest disaster ever — but even then that would be great TV.”

Watch more from Chris Harrison’s conversation with HuffPost Live here.

What Tabloid Headlines Would Look Like Without The Sexism

Magazine tabloids tend to treat women like zoo animals instead of people.

Created by college students Erin Valentine and Ashley McGetrick, a new project called “Breaking News: Deconstructing Entertainment Journalism” highlights the rampant sexism in entertainment media by revealing what headlines would look like if tabloids treated female celebrities like real people.

kourtney

The two seniors at Elon University created the project for their capstone course on women and gender in the media.

“By translating these headlines to be more feminist-friendly, we hoped to call out sexist and unequal cultural influences, especially of celebrities, in the media,” Valentine told The Huffington Post. “Sensationalized tabloid media preys on the female body and an idealized version of ‘womanhood.'”

Headlines involving female celebrities are notorious for objectifying women, Valentine said. From shaming women who go makeup-free to criticizing women for wearing gym clothes, tabloids subject women to a lot of sexism that men rarely experience.

“Whether in line at the grocery store, scrolling through Facebook or flipping through television channels, it is hard to miss headlines worshiping, critiquing or questioning the physiques and lifestyles of female public figures,” Valentine said. “While seemingly harmless, these hyped up headlines attack more than just the people pictured.”

It’s not only the headlines that are implicitly sexist, but the stories written about these female celebrities. Instead of writing about how hard-working Blake Lively is when she attends dozens of events in one day, stories are written about how many outfits she wore.

Valentine noted that consumers do have an impact on these headlines. “They should also acknowledge that they have the power to push back as viewers and as the audience to encourage more feminist-friendly entertainment journalism,” she said.

Check out some of Valentine’s and McGetrick’s feminist-friendly headlines below.

I’m In An Open Marriage And You Would Never Know It

By Gwen & Lark for YourTango

Everyone has a secret. Things we don’t want people to know because we are embarrassed, too proud or too private. We keep secrets because some things are too intimate and special for anyone else to know. But sometimes we keep secrets because we may feel like we will be harshly judged and don’t want to invite the criticism that may follow. Often, we just simply don’t know who we can trust with sensitive information because it might illicit unwanted gossip.

For example, you would never know I have an “open” marriage. I’m not the lady in the 4-inch heels at school pick up that wears skin-tight jeans or has DD implants. I don’t have wild parties where people stagger home with someone else’s spouse because they picked their car keys from a bowl on the coffee table. I’m just another mom who drives a sensible car, does the grocery shopping, wears clothes from Ann Taylor, goes jogging to stay fit — and occasionally has sex with men who are not my husband.

If I ever told you about this part of my life — which I probably wouldn’t unless you were an extremely close friend — your first reaction might be “What? How? But what about your kids?”

Surely, you already have an image in your mind about what an open marriage is.

It’s often mistaken for polygamy, where a man lives together with multiple women like the show Sister Wives or Big Love. Or you might think that it’s a convenient excuse for a husband to have sex with other women without losing the security of having a wife or the social complexities of having a mistress.

What most people who have never experienced an open marriage might not understand is that every open marriage is different. And it’s probably not what you think, unless you know someone personally who has one. (And you probably do, you just don’t know it yet!).

Not everyone in an open marriage is some kind of sex-addicted freak show. Between household duties, raising children and having a meaningful relationship with my husband, I do not have a lot of time to dedicate to having sex with other people, even if I wanted to.

I do not have sex with every man I meet. I do not want to steal your husband. I do not even want to have sex with your husband. I do not have sex at the grocery store or soccer practice or bring strange men into our home.

My open marriage did not start out as such. It was very much closed with a big, iron door and the thought of that ever changing never once crossed my mind in the first 13 years of our marriage. My husband, on the other hand, had been making threesome jokes for at least 10 of those 13 years and often wondered out loud about all the sex he missed out on in his youth.

He grew up in a very conservative family where sex before marriage was considered a sin. I had a similar upbringing but had secretly given in to my desires and had been with someone before I met my husband. I felt incredibly guilty about it because that’s not what “good” girls do.

But eventually the reasons against experimenting sexually with other people were overshadowed by the curiosity — and the exhausting requests by my husband.

We didn’t know exactly how this kind of thing worked, so we took a risk and asked some friends who we thought might know. It’s a delicate subject to broach, but we felt like a few conversations we had in the past left us with some clues that they were, if not in an open marriage, at least open-minded people when it came to sex.

Our hunch was right, and they told us about a place in town where we could go — what you might call a “Swingers Club”. After talking about it for so long, I was ready to at least go and have a look and was excited and nervous to see what it was like. The club itself was dark with a lot of scantily-clad women and sharply dressed men dancing or milling around the bar sipping drinks while lights flashed and stage smoke puffed up from the floor. Some people were sitting on the vinyl couches in a separate area behind the dance floor, chatting and caressing each other.

The beat of the music was pounding as hard as my heart was pumping in my chest. What am I doing here? Am I weird for wanting to know what happens here? Am I depraved? While most people hired a babysitter to go to dinner and a movie, we had left our children at home so we could watch come here and … what?

Pretty much anything goes in a club of that nature, but it’s different for everyone.

For our first foray, we stayed together and only exchanged touches with other couples. We had agreed in advance this was more of a reconnaissance mission than a full-blown invasion into open marriage. But that night things happened — I won’t go into detail out of respect for my husband — that sparked a change in what the both of us wanted and needed in our marriage. Our curiosity (and the subsequent desire to satisfy it) came from a place of safety and security in the relationship we had fostered over the last decade.

It has been a few years since our first visit to that club and our relationship has changed and grown with time, as all relationships tend to do. The rules of our open marriage have evolved and developed over time, where we now both understand what the other person needs ,and we feel comfortable with that.

The key for us is communication and respect. It also means that our relationship comes first. We spend quality time together, we date each other, we clean the house on Saturdays and take the kids to dance and soccer. And occasionally, if one of us is on a solo business trip or a night on the town with friends, that big iron door is flung open and we let ourselves have fun. We’re young(ish), good-looking and in good shape. And we enjoy it when it feels right and safe.

None of our outside experiences are kept private from each other.

We both know what the other spouse is doing, and sometimes we do it together. I’m happy to share with my spouse the details of any sexual adventure I might have, just as he would do for me if I asked (although we don’t always want to know). An open marriage for me means having new sexual experiences without guilt or shame.

As “open” as we are with each other about this aspect in our relationship, we are not open about it with our kids. Just like we don’t talk to them about the complexities of getting a mortgage, why and how we invest our money or what kind of birth control we use, we don’t talk to our kids about this small but delicate aspect to our marriage.

They’re too young to understand that if mom sleeps with the mailman (just kidding — he’s not my type) that that doesn’t mean Mom and Dad are getting a divorce. They don’t understand about commitment, unity or loyalty on the level required when discussing an open marriage. They’re kids — and they need to stay that way.

So they play with Barbies, Legos and fight with each other and don’t ever have to worry about whether Mom and Dad love each other. Because we show them every day when we eat breakfast together or dance around the kitchen or cheer them on that we’re a family and that’s never going to change.

But if the day comes when one of them says to me, “You know, Mom, this one time I heard a rumor… ” I’m not going to lie.

I will sit down with my child and answer any questions they might have and explain that for us, this lifestyle works. Maybe then they will be ready to grasp the idea that you can love someone, spend your life devoted to them emotionally, be best friends, lovers… and have sex with someone else on the side. But until that day comes, I’ll keep the secret between me, my husband and, well, you.

Unomum is our space to explore the many million issues of single motherhood, but it’s also for all the ladies — women stuck in shitty marriages, unfulfilled broads wishing for divorce, and happily coupled former single moms with a shit-ton of wisdom to share.

Here’s What It Would Look Like If Inspirational Quotes Were Honest, Vol. 3

You’re inspiring me to death!

There is such a thing as too many inspirational quotes. We’re talking about the scores of quote photos that your most annoying Facebook and Instagram friends incessantly post. At some point, you have to stop being inspired and go out and do that thing you’re inspired to do, right?

That being said, we’re not sure they’re all that effective anyway. If these quotes were being more honest, people would probably hesitate to share them as much. And we’re all for that.*

*Except for these. Definitely share the h-e-double-hockey-sticks out of these.

Aasif Mandvi Details How He Found Out Trevor Noah Would Be New ‘Daily Show’ Host

Longtime “Daily Show” correspondent Aasif Mandvi stopped by “The HuffPost Show” Friday night to talk about his new HBO series “The Brink,” his new web series “Halal in the Family,” and of course, all the changes at “The Daily Show.”

With Jon Stewart signing off in August, and Trevor Noah taking over the host’s desk soon after, Comedy Central’s flagship show will surely look different in the year to come. And as Mandvi put it, “daddy’s leaving, everyone’s kinda freaking out.”

As many people speculated that Mandvi would succeed Stewart as host, Roy Sekoff asked Mandvi how the show delivered the news that Noah had been picked.

“I found out the same way that everyone else on the show found out.” He went on, “You know I have a show, I’m doing ‘The Brink’ and I’m very excited about it, and so a) not even available to do it. I’m an actor at the end of the day and I love doing that. And I wish Trevor all the best.”

Here’s Which ‘Game Of Thrones’ Character Snoop Dogg Would Smoke Weed With

It’s no surprise that Snoop Dogg is one of the biggest “Game of Thrones” fans outside of the Seven Kingdoms. He raps on the “Lannister’s Anthem” on the “Catch the Throne, Volume II” mixtape, and he even got stoned with Seth Rogen and recapped “GoT.”

But if the Snoop D-O-double-G could blaze with anyone in Westeros, who would it be?

The Daily Beast caught up with the rapper to find out. “Of course Tyrion Lannister! He knows how to party,” Snoop said. (And we totally agree.) Tyrion is also Snoop’s favorite character in the HBO series. But why, you ask? “Cuz he likes to have a good time and party with bad b**ches,” Snoop told the Daily Beast. Yup.

Although Snoop loves “Game of Thrones” with all of his heart, we’re not sure he knows the show is just a show. While talking about his upcoming album “Bush” with the New York Post, Snoop explained why he’s so into “GoT.”

I watch it for historic reasons to try to understand what this world was based on before I got here,” Snoop said. “I like to know how we got from there, to here, and the similarities between then and now.” Yes, that is an actual thing Snoop Dogg actually said about a TV show with dragons and frozen zombies.

But then again, author George R.R. Martin has said his books are heavily influenced by history, and the Red Wedding and even The Mountain vs. The Viper fight were historically based. So Snoop isn’t that far off.

“Game of Thrones” airs on Sundays at 9:00 p.m. ET on HBO.

This Possible ‘Harry Potter’ Couple Would Ruin Harry Potter’s Childhood Even More

Harry Potter might want to keep away from the latest edition of The Quibbler.

Following a recent Instagram post, the online speculation is that Harry’s dad, James Potter, aka actor Robbie Jarvis, may be dating Luna Lovegood, aka actress Evanna Lynch. And if Harry’s childhood wasn’t ruined before, it definitely is now:

That photo isn’t all, though. Despite the fact that E! wasn’t given conformation from Jarvis’ reps that the two were dating, other cute photos just seem to add to the evidence. Take this one for example:

Trying on hats with @msevylynch. Which one of us looks better? #fancy

A photo posted by Robbie (@awildrobbieattacks) on

And check out this one where they apparently took Polyjuice Potion and transformed into owls. Nice try, James and Luna, but we know it’s you:

Owls!

A photo posted by Robbie (@awildrobbieattacks) on

So why is this such a big deal? OK, first, let’s skip past the fact that in “Harry Potter,” Luna came in during Ginny’s year and is younger than Harry. Just forget that. But didn’t Harry also take Luna to Professor Slughorn’s Christmas party? Now his dad might be taking her out? Oh, and what about Lily Potter, James? What about Lily?

Voldemort has done some pretty messed up things to Harry Potter before, but this might be crossing the line.

That being said, we wish all the happiness in the world to the potential couple because they are just actors and Harry Potter isn’t real. Or that’s what people want you to believe, anyway.

Representatives for the actors did not immediately respond to The Huffington Post’s requests for comment.

Jon Stewart Tells Dana Perino That Fox’s ‘The Five’ & ‘The Daily Show’ Would Make A ‘Sh*t Taco’

“The Daily Show” is not exactly known as friendly turf for Fox News hosts. But on Wednesday night, “The Five” co-host Dana Perino ventured into what many at her channel might regard as enemy territory.

When Jon Stewart explained that his team was “obsessed” with “The Five,” Perino suggested their programs join forces.

“It’s like Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups — peanut butter and chocolate,” Perino said. “Maybe we could all get together here and have a mashup.”

“I think of it more as a shit taco,” Stewart replied. “I’m not saying who’s who. I’m just saying I don’t know that it’s necessarily two great tastes that go great together.”

As he mocked some of her co-hosts, Perino gamely played along. And when Stewart asked about the “dumb guy” on the “The Five,” Perino quickly asked, “Could you be more specific?”

Stewart was referring to Eric Bolling, who Perino noted had a dog named Freedom “after the Freedom Towers, ok, so watch the jokes.”

That elicited an eye roll from Stewart.

“My dog’s named Holocaust,” Stewart shot back. “I’m just saying, you want to have a dog tragedy-off, well, I think I’ve got that covered.”

How Cell Phones Would Have Ruined Most of Our Favorite Movies

If you’re a pop culture maven, most likely it can be agreed that the modern cell phone can be traced back to two classic TV series of the 1960s: Star Trek and Get Smart. Captain James Tiberius Kirk and his USS Enterprise crew were always armed with their “communicators” when traveling abroad on a distant planet. They were palm-sized devices with covers the flipped open, providing instant connection with the orbiting space ship. This design was aped, no doubt, by former Trekkies for the classic “flip phone” design that ruled the high-tech roost in the late 90s and early millennium.

Secret Agent 86 Maxwell Smart had his shoe phone, surely the most creative (and ridiculous) example of technology ever invented by someone who was most likely thought to be a creative and scientific genius. However, it did enable Max to get out of one sticky situation after another. After all, how many bad guys confiscate a spy’s shoes after he’s been captured? With these questions in mind, we’ll take a look at a handful of classic movies, and how they literally couldn’t have played out, if they had been set in a cell phone-ruled universe.

The Wizard of Oz (1939)
Spirited teen Dorothy Gale runs head-on into a 19th century Kansas tornado in search of her terrier, Toto, who’s run off. Now, if Oz had taken place in 21st century Kansas, not only would Dorothy and all her relatives, farm hands and neighbors have smart phones stuck into that big front pocket of their overalls, Toto would have been stuck with a microchip by the local vet when he was just a pup, enabling Dorothy to track him via Google and changing her desperate, fumbling search for him through the cornfields into an easy search that would have taken all of ninety seconds. Cut to Dorothy: “Bad dog!” Dorothy snatches up said dog, scrambles into the storm cellar with time to spare, grabbing a piping hot biscuit for herself from Auntie Em’s fresh batch in the kitchen, and a stew bone for Toto. No conk on the head. No hallucinating about Munchkins, poppy fields and animated scarecrows. And no drug problem for the college-bound Dorothy a few years later because, let’s face it: once you’ve been to Oz, you’d wanna keep going back. And back. And back…

Casablanca (1942)
Former lovers Ilsa and Rick are reunited in Nazi-occupied North Africa. There is still major chemistry between the two, but Ilsa’s heart belongs to her husband, noble Hungarian freedom fighter Victor Laszlo. If Ilsa and Rick had cell phones, their first meeting never would have taken place. Think about it: a chick dumps your ass in Paris, the most romantic city on Earth, in the middle of a frickin’ rainstorm. What’s the first thing you do? You defriend her sorry excuse for a girlfriend on Facebook and get all your real buds to do the same! The minute Ilsa and Victor arrived at Rick’s Café Americana, and of course “checked-in” on Facebook, that one semi-catty female “pal” that stayed in touch with both Rick and Ilsa would inform Rick post-haste that Ilsa was in his establishment. Rick would then text Captain Louis Renault, dropping dime on the fact that the Nazi-wanted Laszlo was in his joint. Louis and his boys would arrest the hot couple on the spot, without Rick ever having to deal with them directly. End of story, with revenge served as the coldest of cold dishes on Rick’s part. Final fade out has Rick telling Sam to tinkle the ivories with the J. Giles Band classic “Love Stinks” as Rick dances with a beautiful Casablancan gal.

Vertigo (1958)
Alfred Hitchcock’s classic, cited by the British Film Institute as the greatest film ever made, could have played out much the same for its first half, until Kim Novak’s Madeline Elster character is “reborn” as Judy Barton, discovered by James Stewart’s ex-cop Scottie Ferguson on the streets of San Francisco. In the world of cell phones and the Internet, Scottie would have become a shut-in after the trauma of losing Madeline, spending all his time surfing dating and hook-up sites on the web and his phone. While cruising chicks on Tinder one lonely night, Scottie would have discovered Madeline/Judy’s profile, as the forlorn girl is now looking for love herself. Scottie quickly puts the pieces together via Photoshop, comparing and contrasting picks of Madeline and Judy under extreme magnification, realizing they’re one and the same. After setting up a Coffee Bean date with “Judy” using a fake Tinder profile picture, Scottie spikes her chai latte with drugged almond milk, taking her to the Golden Gate Bridge, making her confess all as she comes to. As the cops drag Judy off, Scottie throws his cell phone into the San Francisco Bay, deciding to move up to an Oregon commune where all technology is forbidden.

E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial (1982)
“E.T. phone home!” Well, here’s the thing: if we’d had cellphones in 1982, what do you think an uber-advanced alien would’ve had at that point? He would’ve phoned home. As in post-haste. As in, “Dude, what h-e-double hockey sticks are you guys thinking?! You left me stranded!” The captain of E.T.’s ship, scared shitless that his commanding officer, who happens to be E.T.’s uncle, will find out about this, uses a top secret do-hickey to travel back in time to the point where E.T. wandered off in the first place, grabbing him and dragging him onto the ship, chastising his subordinate for being “a space cadet.” Meanwhile, Elliott, Gertie and the nice suburban family have a normal suburban life, and adopt a Golden Retriever puppy a few months later. They name him Fernando, which translates to “brave traveler,” and got the idea from a new naming app Gertie downloaded onto her iPhone 6.

God Told David Oyelowo He Would Play Martin Luther King, But He Didn’t Stop There

David Oyelowo hasn’t been shy about discussing how God spoke to him in 2007 and said the actor would eventually play Martin Luther King Jr. in what would become “Selma.”

“The reason I’m talking about that is because I’m as shocked as anyone else may be that this British guy is playing Martin Luther King,” Oyelowo, who was born in England, said during a recent interview. “Certainly back then, in 2007, I had done none of the movies people have now seen me do now.”

At the time, Oyelowo — who has since starred in “Lee Daniels’ The Butler,” “Jack Reacher,” “The Help” and “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” — was a relative unknown. But it was another obstacle separating him from King that proved more difficult to overcome: Stephen Frears. Back then, the director was attached to “Selma” and didn’t think Oyelowo was right for the part. In the ensuing seven years, however, Frears left and multiple directors nearly stepped into his place (including Spike Lee and Paul Haggis). In 2010, Lee Daniels came onboard and, after working with Oyelowo on”Lee Daniels’ The Butler,” cast the actor as King. The tumultuous development process didn’t end there: Daniels dropped out because of scheduling conflicts. That’s when Oyelowo suggested another former collaborator: Ava DuVernay, with whom Oyelowo had made the 2012 indie film “Middle of Nowhere.”

“There was so much faith that had to be employed that this thing was going to happen,” Oyelowo said. “Virtually every day between that moment [when God spoke] to me and now, I did everything I could to make this thing happen.”

Now that it has, Oyelowo has received the best reviews of his career for playing King. The performance earned him a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor in a Motion Picture Drama, and it has Oyelowo in the middle of a crowded group of contenders vying for an Oscar nomination. “Selma,” meanwhile, stands as one of the year’s best films, a timely and insightful drama that says as much about Martin Luther King’s struggle to get equal voting rights in 1965 as it does about the Millions March in 2014.

Oyelowo spoke to HuffPost Entertainment about “Selma,” working with DuVernay and what it was like to meet King’s children.

You’ve talked about hearing a higher calling to play this role all the way back in 2007. Does that kind of connection with God extend through the production as well?
What I couldn’t have anticipated is how much I needed, to be perfectly frank, God’s help in the playing of it. Not least because this was a man of God. This was someone, if you’ve seen him giving those speeches, there is something flowing through him other than himself. He is flowing in his anointing. I needed that. I like to think of myself as a good actor, but Martin Luther King, I ain’t! If you’re going to go and shoot in Atlanta, in a historical church, with 500 people who are from Atlanta, you need a little help from above. So I definitely felt I had that.

During that seven year period from when you first read the script and now, was playing Dr. King something you thought about every day, or is that impossible?
The first thing I can say to you is that it’s very possible to think about playing Martin Luther King every single day for seven years. I’m living evidence of that. There is never going to be a time in your life as an actor where you’re going to go, “Oh yeah, I’m ready to play Dr. King now.” But between doing the work in quiet and then, the films that presented themselves to me, I prepared. Playing a Union solider in “Lincoln,” playing a preacher in “The Help,” playing a black fighter pilot in “Red Tails,” playing the son of a butler in “Lee Daniels’ The Butler,” who is in the Freedom Riders and becomes a Black Panther: these were all films in which I had to go study the history. Inevitably they were part of what informed playing Dr. King. Now, were they opportunities that were divinely presented to me or was I just continually drawn to that material because of what was going on in my head? That I can’t really say. But I do know that so many different aspects of my life went into what you see in the film. Plus, I was now the age Dr. King was when these things happened in his life. When I first read the script, I had two kids; when we shot it, I had four kids, like he did. There were so many things I matured into by the time I played the role.

Dr. King is, relatively speaking, a young man during the events of “Selma,” but he looks 10-15 years older than his actual age. How did you manage the physical transformation this role required?
Again, we’re back to the spiritual side of things. People like to talk about the weight gain and the voice, but that’s what we do as actors; that’s the first rung of what you need to do if you’re going to play someone like this. But it was the emotional and spiritual weight of what this man did and had to go through that was tough. At that stage in his life, to have spent 10 years under threat — and not only his life, but his kids’ lives, his wife’s life. Having all these people depend on him. Being a voice for the voiceless. Being someone who has seen people die because of this cause. And not just because racist people have killed them, but because he went to places where he tried to have racists act out in front of the cameras, and then people get hurt. In Selma, people died. That weighs on you. If you’re mentally placing yourself in that space, it does something to you physically. When I watch him, you can see there is a burden. You can see that he looks and feels older than he was. He was 36 at this stage. That is crazy. That had to be one of the things I tried to bring to it.

You recommended Ava to direct this film. Having worked with her on “Middle of Nowhere,” what surprised you about her transition to this kind of bigger material?
When we worked together on “Middle Of Nowhere” I saw her talent is undeniable. One of the privileges I’ve had in doing some of those films I mentioned is working with Steven Spielberg and other incredible directors. I was on the set with Ava, and she is just as good. I think the unique thing about her — and what she brought to “Selma” that was so incredible — was the ease with which she went into a film that was 100 times the budget of the last thing she had done. There were so many more people, so many more elements, it was much bigger in size, but she never panicked. She never shouted. She never threw a chair. She never compromised her vision. That went through the post-production side of things as well. To be a visionary, you have to be single minded. She has that without being, to be perfectly honest, an unpleasant person. That’s very rare! Often being single-minded is combined with being a bit of a nightmare to be around. She’s just not that.

It’s impossible to discuss “Selma” without mentioning how timely it is in its scenes of protest and police brutality. How do you think “Selma” fits in with the events that have occurred over the last month?
Well, we’re back to the divide, aren’t we? If you were ever going to have a moment in time when this film should come out in the 50 years since these events happened, it would be now. Not only would it be now, it would be now now. It would be this month. We would be having this conversation today. You can’t tell me between everything we’ve discussed already to when the film is being released to the fact that it’s a black woman who has made this — just in terms of where we are in history and how beautiful a thing that is — that it’s not divine timing. Whether you believe in that stuff or not, I truly believe the reason why this film is so pertinent for right now is that it shows this isn’t the first time. It shows that we are not a new generation for this and also how it was successfully dealt with. Peaceful protest. Strategy. Using the power of the image to bring the world together. That’s what happened in a sense.

Ferguson, I feel, was deemed a “black problem.” Eric Garner became an American problem. That’s the power of the image. Seeing him murdered onscreen has been the thing that has brought America and the world together to protest. Seeing Bloody Sunday on the Edmund Pettus Bridge is what brought the nation together, black and white, in 1965. The difference is that was about voting rights, and this is about police reform. There had to be federal intervention with voting rights; the federal government is stalling on intervening on this, to bring in independent bodies to police the police. It’s just clear that’s what is needed. No matter what they say about how difficult that is because it’s states’ rights. It was states’ rights with voting. It’s crazy how similar it is.

Did you get to meet anyone close to Dr. King in preparation for the role?
I met every one of his children and spoke with them. I actually became quite friendly with Dexter Scott King, his second son. I met Martin Luther King III. I actually didn’t meet Bernice King until the Friday before we were going to start shooting. I bumped into her at the King Center, if you would believe it — again, the divine! I was with a group of the actors who were going to be in the film, and she went up to everyone, deliberately leaving me to last. “So, who you playing?” she said. I was like, “Oh. My. Lord.” Dr. King’s voice is pretty deep, but I was like, in a high-pitched voice, “I’m going to be playing your daddy.” It was as bad as it could be. But by the time we finished our conversation, she ended up praying with me and giving me her blessing to play her dad. She and her elder brother saw the film recently and were very complimentary about it. She said mine is the best interpretation of her dad she’s seen. I will take it.

After seven years of having this role in your life, did you feel any letdown or hangover after you moved on to the next job?
There was no letdown. I was very happy to let this guy go. I wouldn’t say it was a burden, because I felt so privileged to do it, but there were moments where it was a real crossover. I stayed in character for the three months we were doing this. I, for one second, wouldn’t say I was him for that time, but I felt a little bit of what it may have been like. Just because you have to take it on. He lived through 13 years of that. I was very happy to walk away. I tell you that much.

Would You Walk Around NYC In Body Paint Instead of Jeans? This Woman Did

You know those nightmares where everyone’s wearing pants except you? Well, one bold lady in NYC made that her reality—on purpose.

Leah Jung agreed to let the masters of disguise at Body of Art paint a pair of “skinny jeans” on her otherwise bare bottom half. She then took the subway, strolled around a very crowded Times Square, hit up a McDonald’s, and even shopped at a Forever 21 while Model Prankster TV documented the whole thing.

Though the painted-on jeans do look realistic with their strategically placed rips, it’s still pretty amazing that almost no one seems to notice that Jung isn’t actually wearing pants.

Watch it all go down here and ask yourself: Would you notice?
