New York Men’s Day Offers Peek at All-Stars, Emerging Labels

New York Men’s Day’s afternoon session on Monday showcased both emerging designers and those who have created more-established businesses, ones touted as All-Stars. Those included Krammer & Stoudt, Descendant of Thieves and Wood House Army. Private Policy, which will hold a runway show on Wednesday, was also part of the mix.
Three  pieces from Krammer & Stoudt were psychedelic-colored updates of the brand’s Americana-skewed workwear, with jackets and pants created from 12-oz. denim and decorated with Day-Glo colors in designs including hot rod flames.
Julian Woodhouse of Wood House Army offered up WHA, three graphic black-and-white vertically striped looks from his diffusion line that included an anorak, shorts and a one-piece with military details.
For Descendant of Thieves, the brand offered up an assortment of multipurpose pieces for the travel guy, including reversible shorts, lightweight jackets and swimwear that could double as regular shorts.
Private Policy used the All-Star showcase to launch Pxl, a see-now-buy-now capsule collection of black, blue and green prints on shirts, trousers, caps, a bikini top and racing shorts.
Among the other brands showing at New York Men’s Day were International Woolmark Prize 2018/19 nominees Ka Wa Key, who presented a romantic collection of hand-done tie-dye patterns and distressing on airy knits and

Loro Piana Steps Out With Shoe Pop-up in New York

Loro Piana is stepping out. The Italian brand, known for its buttery soft textiles, has unveiled a pop-up shop in New York’s Meatpacking District exalting its key footwear styles. Called “The Rare Walk, Meatpacking,” the  residency which runs till July 8, takes a fun, spirited approach to its white-soled shoes.
As customers walk into the 16,000-square-foot space at 3 Ninth Avenue, they encounter oversize fabric fixtures mimicking dunes that nod to the Mongolian territory where the brand’s well-known cashmere is sourced. The fixtures prop up the shoes, including variations of the “walk” style and a limited-edition unisex merino wool sneaker exclusive to the Meatpacking store. The store also carries exclusive bags, scarves and a selection of small leather goods.
According to chief executive officer Fabio d’Angelantonio, the summer walk shoes have been popular with a new, younger customer, adding, “It’s been a way for them to discover the brand.”
The pop-up marks the U.S. debut of Loro Piana’s made-to-measure footwear program, which offers a choice of colors, linings and material combinations. A wall of 30 shoes in grid formation broadcasts the color options. The brand has a similar program in its European stores, but the downtown New York store also offers an option

Fair Harbor to Open Three Pop-ups in New York

Fair Harbor, the sustainable swimwear brand, will open three seasonal pop-ups around New York this summer.
The first is located at Brookfield Place at 230 Vesey Street in lower Manhattan where the company has created a beach-like atmosphere inspired by Fair Harbor on Fire Island. Wood fixtures painted white with pops of color complement the full assortment of men’s and women’s product. At the center of the shop, a “fish tank” holds empty plastic bottles highlighting the brand’s mission of creating product out of recycled plastics. The dressing room is designed like an outdoor beach shower and the checkout is made of an old surfboard completing the beach experience. The shop will be open through Labor Day weekend.
The second shop will be located at One Hotel Brooklyn Bridge and will have a similar design aesthetic as Brookfield Place. It will be open for July and August.
For the remaining shop, Fair Harbor has partnered with Sunswell, a Sag Harbor, N.Y.-based men’s brand to create Sag Mercantile. Located at 17 Washington Street just off of Main Street in the village of Sag Harbor, the 1,000-square-foot shop will carry the full assortment from both brands and will showcase a series of community events as

New York Fashion Week: Men’s Hanging on by a Thread

New York Fashion Week: Men’s is on life support.
Less than three weeks until the start of the men’s spring runway season, the Council of Fashion Designers of America has finally released its calendar — and it’s not pretty.
There are fewer than 20 men’s designers showing and half are with Agentry PR’s New York Men’s Day. Absent from the calendar are some designers who have been active supporters of the men’s shows since they were launched four years ago, including Todd Snyder, Robert Geller, Ovadia New York, Carlos Campos and Bode.
Instead, the calendar kicks off on June 3 with Agentry’s presentations of small and emerging designers only. The following day, N.Hoolywood will show at 6 p.m., followed by Frere at 7 p.m. The final day on June 5 will see presentations from Hecho, Freemans Sporting Club, Untitled Collective, Dyne and Linder, as well as shows from Private Policy, NIHL and Grungy Gentleman.
The reasons for the lack of participation are several. First, this marks the first time the men’s shows have moved from July to June to coincide with women’s resort. That timing is early for a lot of brands since the men’s market in New York is generally in mid- to

Bode Choosing Paris Over New York

Emily Bode is jumping across the pond to show her spring collection and will make her runway debut in Paris next month, WWD has learned.
The New York-based designer’s presentation of her heritage-inspired men’s wear has been a staple of New York Fashion Week: Men’s since its launch in 2016. But the declining significance of the shows and the character of the company’s business led to the decision.
Additionally, the brand is a finalist for the LVMH Prize, which will be awarded in Paris in June.
Paris Fashion Week’s organizers are expected to make the announcement of Bode’s participation today.
“The majority of our distribution is in Europe,” Bode said. “And we wanted the buyers and press to see the collection. We’ve been selling via line sheets and post-show, so we thought it was important to embrace the opportunity and make the jump to Paris.”
Bode is the latest designer brand to abandon the struggling New York spring calendar. The official schedule released Wednesday by the Council of Fashion Designers of America is anemic, with only around 20 men’s presentations and shows, nearly all of them emerging or little-known designers.
“I’m super-grateful to New York Fashion Week: Men’s,” Bode said, “and I’m excited to see what

Agentry to Open New York Fashion Week: Men’s Again

Agentry PR is pivoting.
The organizer of New York Men’s Day, a showcase for emerging designers, will once again open the men’s spring calendar, working in tandem with the Council of Fashion Designers of America.
The CFDA shifted the men’s dates to June 3 to 5 this season to coincide with the women’s resort calendar. This means the New York-based men’s shows will take place ahead of the men’s shows in London, Florence, Milan and Paris.
Agentry had considered sticking with the former July dates to give the designers more time to prepare their collections and align with the New York men’s trade shows, but opted to stick with CFDA instead.
But there are other changes: New York Men’s Day will now be held at Daylight Studios & Location 05, next to the newly opened Hudson Yards complex on the West Side of Manhattan. For the past few seasons, the shows had been held at Dune Studios in the financial district.
New York Men’s Day will feature presentations from nine designers, down from 12 in prior iterations. Five will be held over a two-hour period in the morning and four in the afternoon.
But the event will also feature an All Stars Showcase where previous Men’s

NEW YORK CALLING: Savile Row tailor Ozwald Boateng will hit York on May 5 with an immersive fashion experience at the Apollo theater in Harlem, showcasing the brand’s first women’s collection.

In the Spotlight: Willem New York Twists the Classics

Brand: Willem New York
Backstory: After graduating with a history degree from Harvard, Sean McDonagh indulged his love of kicks by working on branding for the Greats, the buzzy sneaker brand. But he soon got restless and sought to tell a fuller men’s wear story. “I’m someone who jumps into the fire,” he said. So he created Willem New York, a casual men’s wear collection rooted in American staples such as jeans, hoodies and T-shirts but with subtle design twists. In addition to updating classics, McDonagh also strives to tell a story with Willem. For spring, a collection he titled Paradise Lost, he was inspired by Seventies Montauk, N.Y., where he’s spent his summers since childhood, and photographer Peter Beard. The influence of the lensman, who is renowned for his images of Africa and its wildlife, is found in several pieces of Willem’s spring offering such as safari jackets as well as the earthy color palette.
Key pieces: Although Kenya and Montauk might not on the surface seem to have much in common, McDonagh has managed to seamlessly blend the aesthetic of both in his spring offering. The design is intended to represent “a beach town with safari details,” he said. That

Hot Tokyo Café, Breakfast Club, to Pop up in New York

Tokyo café Breakfast Club — a favorite haunt of fashion, film and art folk — is landing in New York.
The establishment will set a one-week creative residency at the rising Lower East Side gallery Entrance, which was recently profiled in WWD.
Founded by chef and longtime Tokyoite Luli Shioi and actor Kunichi Nomura, Breakfast Club — located in Nakameguro — is a preferred pitstop for creatives visiting Tokyo, as well as the local artistic community. The café is regularly visited by film directors including Wes Anderson, actors like Norman Reedus, fashion designers such as Olympia Le-Tan and artists like Tom Sachs and Barry McGee. Harry Styles has also recently popped in.
Breakfast Club’s merchandise — T-shirts and hoodies designed by Le-Tan, the brands Cav Empt and Richardson, and the artist Cali Thornhill Dewitt — are souvenirs coveted by many streetwear-inclined tourists.
Its New York residency will run from April 15 to 21, overseen by Shioi as well as Cai Oglesby, a New York native who now lives in Tokyo and works at the café. Each evening will see a new event, each planned to appeal to the same kind of creative community that Breakfast Club serves in Tokyo.

Fur Supporters Plan to Keep Fighting New York City’s Proposed Ban on Fur Sales

Fur industry advocates plan to continue to turn up the heat on the New York City Council, in response to its proposal for a bill that would ban the sale of fur apparel.
Initially put forward by Council Speaker Corey Johnson and City Council members Mark Levine, Fernando Cabrera, Justin Brannan, Helen Rosenthal and Robert Holden, the proposal has since been moved to the Committee on Consumer Affairs and Business Licensing for further discussion.
If approved, violations would be punished by a civil penalty of no more than $ 500 for the first violation, and no less than $ 500, but no more than $ 1,500 for subsequent violations. Fur apparel sold or offered for sale would be subject to seizure and forfeiture.
Nancy Daigneault, vice president of the Americas for the International Fur Federation, said Friday that a number of furriers and other fur advocates have met with their respective council members and have contacted their offices. “In the last week, furriers have been picking up the phone and calling themselves and meeting with City Council members in their district, or sometimes staff if the members aren’t available,” she said. “We’re hopeful that the city will listen that it’s an ill-conceived ban. London-Based Brand Dai to Open New York City Pop-up With Performances

STAGING A STORE: Dai founder Joanna Dai returns to New York this weekend to open a pop-up store in the Bowery that will be as much about special events as will it be about clothes.
She initially relocated to London for her job at J.P. Morgan in 2013, and wound up launching her own direct-to-consumer company in July 2017. Geared for “urban, modern career women,” the location of this week’s pop-up made sense since Dai came from New York and still has part of her network here. A number of special events are planned during the April 2 to 7 run at 208 Bowery. A two-hour styling event with Dai, a post-work meditation with Aiko Neligan, destress yoga with Magi Pierce and styling with Bloomberg’s global head of on-air wardrobe Sara DiMedioare among them.
There are also plans to introduce the Performances Spaces concept in London perhaps for a monthlong store in Soho or Covent Garden, before trying it out a second time in New York. Dai declined to reveal her self-funded company’s annual sales. Aware of the frustrations working women face for wardrobe choices, she set out to try and do something about it. After exiting a career in finance, she enrolled

Unmasking New York Times Photographer Bill Cunningham One Frame at a Time

COMPLETELY FRAMED: Inclined to spend 10 hours outdoors each day shooting and to cover 16 or 17 parties a week, New York Times photographer Bill Cunningham amassed a slew of photographs.
Nearly three years after the photographer’s death at the age of 87, his friends Steven Stolman and former coworker John Kurdewan offered a slide show celebration of his life Wednesday night at the Museum of the City of New York. Along with the runway shots and on-the-town party pictures, there were numerous images of the always-smiling street photographer on and off duty.
Stolman said The Times is doing “an extraordinary retrospective coffee table book,” which is due out this fall. “Bill Cunningham: On the Street: Five Decades of Iconic Photography” is set to be published by Clarkson Potter on September 3. Meanwhile, Kurdewan has an “amazing collection of memorabilia, personal photographs, letters, Post-it notes and other keepsakes from working with Cunningham that would make for a compelling story, Stolman said. The photographer’s archives prior to 1993 are owned by his family, and those post-1993 belong to The Times, he added. His total estate reportedly was valued at $ 4 million.
Wednesday’s crowd also saw photos of Cunningham’s sparse loft where boxes of files

Jos. A. Bank Reopens New York Flagship With Updated Design

NEW YORK — Jos. A. Bank has taken the wraps off a store design that is intended to be a more visible statement of its brand positioning.
The 13,800-square-foot flagship on Madison Avenue and 46th Street had been closed since June for the revamp and had a soft reopening on Tuesday. The official opening event is on March 19.
“We wanted our flagship in New York to represent a unique space as iconic as Madison Avenue,” said Mary Beth Blake, brand president for the Jos. A. Bank division of Tailored Brands Inc. The retailer was founded in 1905 in Baltimore and purchased by Tailored Brands, the former Men’s Wearhouse, in 2014.
The Madison Avenue store opened in 1994 and had not undergone a revamp for 25 years, Blake said.
The first hint that something has changed is seen on the awnings, which tout “the new tradition” that will be found inside. Upon entering, the customer finds 17-foot-high ceilings, custom furniture and fixtures in rich brown woods, Corian stone tops, brushed copper hardware and antique mirrors. Features intended to speak to the brand’s heritage include metallic wall coverings and architectural ornaments as well as a map of Baltimore on the walls of the staircase.

New York Trade Shows Set Uncertain Tone for Season

The rollicking situation with the U.S. government and the subsequent economic uncertainties are giving specialty stores some angst about their prospects in 2019.
With that as the backdrop, retailers were cautious as they shopped the trade shows in New York City last month. They scoured the aisles of Project, Liberty Fairs and Man searching for those special items that would draw customers into their stores. And luckily, they were able to find some things that fit the bill — updated knitwear, outerwear and accessories in particular — from some off-the-radar vendors with a creative bent.
“The fourth quarter overall was good, but the last two weeks of the year with the government shutdown and the market tanking took some steam out of our results,” said Ken Giddon, president of Rothmans.
Although he remains positive, Giddon said he’s expecting a “fight” to hit last year’s numbers, especially as traditional tailored clothing sales continue to drop. “There are a lot fewer suits being bought so we have to find dollars to make up for that,” he said.
And so Giddon, who admits that he loves “the hunt” at trade shows, pored through the hundreds of brands on display to find those replacement dollars. The good news,

Ermenegildo Zegna Flagship Opens in New York

Ermenegildo Zegna opens today a flagship in a New York landmark — the storied Crown Building.
Located at 4 West 57th Street and covering 7,128 square feet, the store was designed by longtime Zegna go-to architect, Peter Marino, who conceived a concept for the unit.
Zegna’s arrival is another indication that 57th Street is increasingly turning into a luxury hub of retail transformation and retail towers. As reported, Nordstrom and David Yurman are moving in, Chanel almost doubled its presence and Swiss watchmaker Richard Mille last October opened its largest store, to name a few.
Zegna’s existing Fifth Avenue store is expected to close by the end of the month. The banner in Brookfield Place overlooking Wall Street will continue to stand. In the U.S., the Italian men’s wear company counts 19 stores and seven outlets.
The striking facade of the flagship is composed of metallic strings, a reference to yarns and the company’s textile expertise, which overlay two glass floors. LED lights illuminate the abstract fabric threads at night.
To convey the Ermenegildo Zegna sensibility, there is vintage furniture, artworks and an innovative installation to present the products, which will change throughout the year and be linked with the displays in the windows.

Phuong My Stages First Runway Show in New York With an Artistic Flair

POETRY IN MOTION: Attendees at Phuong My’s Tuesday morning runway show faced a serious climate change.
As many traipsed into Spring Studios with remnants of the snowy sidewalks on their shoes, they found their seats in a more fiery setting. Aside from the red lighting and toasty temperature in Gallery II, swirling circular fabrics flew up and descended thanks to several strategically placed circular fans. ”I like the poetic so I wanted to create an emotion,” the Vietnamese designer said. “This is the first time that we entered New York Fashion Week so the whole theme is called ‘Sayonara,’ which means good-bye to the Asian fashion show as we step into the U.S. market. So we wanted to bring something with us to create something emotional.”
With distribution in more than 20 countries, Phuong My aims to start selling in the U.S. The company’s namesake, who is also the creative director, has been in business for seven years. Kate Spade New York RTW Fall 2019

“I was thinking about an insanely glamorous women’s closet, and the types of eclectic pieces you might find there,” Kate Spade New York creative director Nicola Glass said backstage during a preshow interview.
It’s that narrative that sees Glass evolving from her debut in spring, when she looked back to the brand’s roots. This season sees her pushing forward, looking at the collection through a lens of “soft and polished glamour.”
She dialed back some on the bright colors the brand is known for, preferring richer tones. A palette of cherrywood and spruce-tree green anchored her lineup, which featured looser silhouettes reminiscent of the late seventies. She did it with pointed collars on blouses, a color-blocked wrap dress and a flared pantsuit in jewel toned corduroy.
Glass did go bright with her animal prints. A polished coat in purple leopard print and a red shirtdress also in leopard explored the idea nicely. Other animal-print pieces had a hint of bright orange layered in to make them pop.
Every look was fully accessorized, including monochromatic tights with a bit of sparkle, turbans and colorful stone mood rings. It was there she gave a nod to the eclectic and girlie fun that is synonymous with the

Will New York Fashion Shows Ultimately Land at The Shed?

When will New York Fashion Week set up its fashion shows at the Shed, which opens April 5?
For years, reports have been circulating that the fashion shows would take place at The Shed once it was completed. The Shed revealed Wednesday that the new nonprofit cultural organization dedicated to commissioning, developing and presenting original works of art, across all disciplines for all audiences, will have its opening season starting April 5. The Shed looks to present world premiere works in the performing arts, visual arts and popular culture.
“We have built a home where established and emerging artists working in all disciplines can create new work in ways that we cannot even imagine,” said Alex Poots, artistic director and chief executive officer of The Shed.
So where does fashion fit in?
Ivan Bart, president of IMG Models and IMG Fashion Properties, which produces the fashion shows, said, “We are hosting NYFW: The Shows at Spring Studios this February, and our focus is on the upcoming season. The Shed is an exciting new development with incredible potential to enhance New York’s culture, and we’re confident many of our talent at Endeavor, whether with IMG or WME, will perform or engage with the space.” He

What to Watch: New York Fashion Week: Men’s Latest Challenges

New York Fashion Week: Men’s has had trouble gaining a foothold since it was launched by the Council of Fashion Designers of America four years ago. The upcoming fall shows — slated for Feb. 4 to 6 — are facing even bigger challenges. First, an unexpected one-time shift in dates by the trade shows in Las Vegas means that retailers and editors who usually attend both will have to make a choice or abbreviate one or both of the events. Project, Liberty Fairs and Agenda will be held Feb. 5 to 7.
On top of that, many of fashion’s biggest and buzziest names have opted to either hold dual-gender shows or have decamped to other cities. Tom Ford will again hold a men’s and women’s show, as he has in past seasons, at 8 p.m. on Feb. 6, officially ending the men’s shows. The women’s shows kick off with Ralph Lauren on Feb. 7 at 10 a.m.
Also opting for dual-gender shows later in the week are Palm Angels — which is making its New York debut — on Feb. 8; John Elliott on Feb. 9; Opening Ceremony on Feb. 10, and Michael Kors on the final day, Feb. 13.

ExKite Limited-Edition Capsule Lands at Barneys New York

Renzo Mancini is proving that you don’t have to be based in a fashion capital to have your products sold by a luxury retailer. Of course, Mancini is a little more remote than most — some would even say, off the grid. Still, he managed to get the attention of Barneys New York buyers in Sardinia, where he lives and operates ExKite with his wife, stylist Eirinn Skrede.
The eco-friendly ExKite creates jackets from kite-surfing kites that are decommissioned and upcycled.
Mancini, a former professional kite surfer, found his calling when he was test-piloting a kite surfing brand. Testing the kites in the water, Mancini realized they could no longer be used for kite surfing, but he didn’t want to throw them away. Each kite was associated with a memory — of a beautiful day or a nice moment on the beach. With Skrede, he designed jackets, each a one-of-a-kind article.
Mancini said he didn’t “want to take a corner at Barneys because we are not yet known.” He had an idea, which sounds quite ambitious, but was second nature for the kite-surfing pro. “‘Why don’t we take two kites and put the logo of Barneys on one and the ExKite logo on

Atelier Paulin to Open New York Boutique

NAME GAME: French jewelry brand Atelier Paulin has landed in New York.
The label is known for its customizable wire jewelry, which is crafted to spell out names and phrases in curlicue.
The brand has for the last few years occupied two notable corners at Le Bon Marché, writing shoppers’ names in gold and silver-plated wire — sometimes dotting an “i” with a tiny diamond or colored stone. On Monday, it opened a stand-alone boutique at 23 Eighth Avenue in New York’s West Village neighborhood.
“We always imagine what will be next and, after Paris, New York was evidence for us that we needed to expand. We were always told that the U.S. market was the hardest in the world. We like challenges and we are confident with our collections. We knew that it could work!” said founder Anne Sophie Baillet.
Atelier Paulin’s New York store is among the first to stock its fine jewelry collection, produced of solid 18-karat gold wire and precious stones.
The brand wholesales its jewelry with 20 stockists across the U.S. including Neiman Marcus and Moda Operandi. It counts 140 points of sale worldwide, and is represented in countries including Italy and Thailand.

New York Fashion Week: Men’s, Vegas Date Overlap Causing Angst

Eeny, meeny, miny, moe — make your choice — New York Fashion Week: Men’s or MAGIC.
A shift in dates by Project, the flagship men’s wear trade show of the MAGIC Marketplace in Las Vegas, to a week earlier in February is forcing many brands and retailers to choose between the two events or, in the case of smaller designers, create extra samples in order to have a presence at both.
NYFW: Men’s will run Feb. 4 to 6 in New York City while Project will run Feb. 5 to 7 in Las Vegas.
Already Liberty Fairs and Agenda have had to leave their longtime home at the Sands Convention Center in order to align with Project’s dates and have secured a spot in downtown Las Vegas for their shows.
Sharifa Murdock, co-owner of Liberty, said she’s aiming to deliver a different experience this time. Liberty will be held at the World Market Center, which she described as an “open space with four big tents” that will allow Liberty a clean slate to “create what we want. We’re going to do something brand new,” she said.
That will include “a lot of activations” that will offer a “fresh” take on the trade show scene. “We

Jussara Lee Taking Her Message of Sustainability to a Multisensory Performance in New York

SECONDHAND NEWS: Committed to sustainability as an individual, designer and business owner, Jussara Lee used that ideology as a rookie costume designer for “Inside the Wild Heart.”
Based on the writings of one of Brazil’s most famous writers, Clarice Lispector, the immersive theatrical experience was conceived by Andressa Furletti and Debora Balardini and directed by Linda Wise. The show bows Thursday in New York. Lee was initially approached by the Brazilian theater company Group.BR about helping to fund the production. She offered to pitch in with the cast’s attire instead.
Lee described Lispector’s work as “amazing,” but the project’s upcycling is what really sold her. Working with a low budget meant “that it was all about secondhand and vintage shopping. I was very interested in that and told them, ‘We’ll make adjustments. We’ll make things fit. That’s what we do best,’” said Lee, adding that she liked the idea of reusing “things that had already been extracted and polluted. There is so much clean-up to do and so much stuff in this world.””
In addition, the project forced her to switch up her usual routine and do some thrifting at Beacon’s Closet in Brooklyn and “all the other underlings.” It was also an

Huckberry is jumping into the pop-up craze.
The San Francisco-based online men’s retailer will open its first retail location at 383 Bleecker Street in Greenwich Village in November. The shop will feature “seven actionable adventures” that will highlight journeys ranging from a West Village Drinking Tour with Jack Kerouac to 72 Hours in Iceland. The pop-up will also offer a series of in-store events such as fireside chats and product demos. The first will be a question-and-answer with adventure photographer Chris Burkard on Nov. 6.
“When we started Huckberry in our apartments back in 2011, our mission was the same then as it is now: to inspire and equip adventures near and far,” Huckberry cofounder Andy Forch said. “Today, we’re excited to take our mission offline and serve our largest market with a fun and inspiring shopping experience we hope will push the boundaries of experiential retail.”

Joe Bananas Makes Leap From Sydney to New York

Kim Bourke and Evan Sturrock are all in.
The co-owners of Joe Bananas, a 40-year-old Australian luxury men’s brand, have picked up stakes, moved halfway around the world to New York and opened their first store on Madison Avenue.
“When Americans dream big, they dream of making it in New York City,” Bourke said. “And when Australians dream big, they dream of making it in New York City.”
And so he and his business partner — and brother-in-law — took the leap of faith, leaving their home, and their two stores in Sydney, to open a 1,600-square-foot space at 943 Madison Avenue, between 74th and 75th streets, next door to The Met Breuer. The store had a soft opening last week and the grand opening is scheduled for Oct. 18.
A peek inside gives the first hint at what makes Joe Bananas different. Although the brand offers a wide range of products, it is best known for its colorful sport coats that are created from limited-edition, handcrafted silk textiles in patterns that are inspired by nature in Australia. It takes 250-300 days on average to weave one bolt of fabric that will in turn produce only six jackets that retail starting at $ 2,800 and go up

Versace to Hold Pre-Fall Show in New York

NEW YORK BOUND: Donatella Versace will hold her Versace pre-fall collection in New York on Dec. 2 at 7 p.m., WWD has learned. The date has a special meaning for the designer, as it is her late brother Gianni’s birthday. Details about the location are being kept under wraps. This is the first time Versace plans a fashion show for the pre-fall season.
It is understood the decision to show in New York was made before the acquisition of the company last month by Michael Kors Holdings Ltd.. In a $ 2.1 billion deal, Versace joined the Kors and Jimmy Choo brands under the Michael Kors Holdings umbrella, which is renaming itself Capri Holdings to reflect the growing and changing group.
The first week of December is shaping up as quite a fashionable one, as Chanel has scheduled its Métiers d’Art collection at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on Dec. 4, as reported.
Other brands are bringing their pre-fall collections outside national borders. As reported, Valentino will hold a runway show in Tokyo on Nov. 27 to present its men’s and women’s pre-fall 2019 collection together for the first time, and Dior plans to stage its first men’s pre-fall runway show with a collection designed by Kim

Lingerie Française to Open Lingerie Loft in New York

Lingerie Française, an organization that represents French lingerie brands, is hosting a lingerie loft in New York.
Open from Nov. 2 to 4, it will display pieces from brands including Aubade, Chantelle, Passionata, Empreinte, Antigel, Maison Lejaby, Simone Perele and Implicite. The loft is a way to highlight these brands and introduce them to the U.S. customer, who Ulyana Sukach, director of international development at Lingerie Française, said already enjoys French lingerie.
“This loft will let visitors experience these brands in an educational and engaging way,” said Ulyana Sukach, director of international development at Lingerie Française, who noted American consumers have an appreciation for French lingerie.
According to La Fédération de la Maille, de la Lingerie & du Balnéaire, France’s lingerie market was valued at 3.9 billion euros in 2016 and it’s grown by 7.8 percent since 2013. French corsetry exports in 2017 were 371.5 million euros, 26.3 million euros of which went to the U.S.
Located at 305 Bleecker Street, the loft will not sell any merchandise — visitors will be directed to retailers who carry these brands — while offering an extensive slate of talks and experiences. There will be workout sessions, workshops on how to find the right bra and talks on

David Mallett Opens New York Salon at The Webster

David Mallett is bringing his signature brand of Parisian-chic hairdressing to New York.
Mallett, an Australian native whose taxidermy-filled eponymous salon in the Second Arrondissement is something of a fashion insider institution in Paris, is set to open a third location — his first in the U.S. and first outside Paris — on the top floor of Laure Hériard Dubreuil’s The Webster in SoHo, on Oct. 16.
The 1,600-square-foot space will operate as a full-service, eight-chair salon, with color, cutting, styling and treatment services overseen by Mallett himself and staffed by longtime employees of his Paris salons, including two hairdressers, two colorists and a client director. Mallett, who opened his second outpost at The Ritz Paris in 2016, will split his time between New York and Paris going forward.
The salon on the fifth floor of The Webster was designed by French architect Charles Zana to replicate the style of Mallett’s Paris salons, which are inspired by French-style craftsmanship. Lamps, furniture and other decor were custom-made for The Webster by François Pouenat, a fifth-generation French artisan metalworker. In a nod to his native Australia, Mallett partnered with Australia-based Dinosaur Designs’ Louise Olsen on accent pieces. Mallett purposefully to designed the New York space

Camera della Moda Responds to New York Times Article

MILAN – A “saddened and concerned” Camera della Moda has responded to The New York Times article on “shadow workers” in Italy, which claims “thousands of low-paid home workers create luxury garments without contracts or insurance.”
”As the acclaimed writer, Edoardo Nesi acknowledges in his award-winning book, ‘Story of My People,’ published in 2013, the Italian supply chain has been under attack for a long time,” the group said in an official statement. “CNMI and its members are committed to working toward making the Italian supply chain resilient, fair and humane on every front. It is a complex process and it takes time; there are no easy solutions, but we are working together through our established Working Group on Social Sustainability and have already achieved substantive gains. We continue to implement solutions using our evidence-base and by working collaboratively.”
At a fashion show here, Carlo Capasa, president of the association, told WWD that this progress was overlooked by Times.
“For example, the NYT article uses statistics on homeworkers that date back to 1973,” read the statement. “The only recent statistics cited are from Tania Toffanin, the author of ‘Fabbriche Invisibili’ who estimated that ‘currently there are 2,000 to 4,000 irregular homeworkers in apparel production.’ Setting this in the context of

Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show Returning to New York

After a two-year trip abroad — to Paris and then Shanghai — the extravaganza and hype machine that is the Victoria’s Secret fashion show is returning to New York.
In a series of posts to Instagram Monday, the brand touted: “Start spreading the news…the #VSFashionShow is back in New York City!” The posts pictured the brand’s “angels” toting their wings about town, hailing a cab, emerging from the subway and passing through Grand Central Terminal.
Together the three posts racked up 1,400 comments in just a few hours — illustrating the reach of the event, which is preparing for its 23rd outing.
For the 2016 production in Paris, the brand imported 70 tons of equipment, 18 miles of cable and 51 of the world’s top models.
Last year, the show ran into other complications in Shanghai, when visas were denied to Katy Perry, reportedly after her perceived support for Taiwan, and Gigi Hadid and others.
Having the show in New York should avoid those kinds of difficulties, but the big question for the business is whether the show can help bring some vigor back to the brand, which has been casting about for direction and looking to reverse a trend of sales declines in its stores.

Burnett New York to Bow for Pre-Fall With $2.5 Million From Investors

Out on her own for the first time, Emily Burnett has lined up some well-placed investors for the new Burnett New York ready-to-wear, cocktail dresses and eveningwear line.
In June, Burnett exited Dennis Basso after a 10-year run. She inadvertently met her future cofounder and co-chief executive officer Sterling McDavid at the designer’s company. Pre-fall will be the first collection for the new label.
McDavid said she visited 20 couture houses in search of a wedding gown, before deciding on Dennis Basso, where Burnett was working at the time. “My experience at Dennis Basso with Emily, Dennis and the whole team was so positive, uplifting and I felt that I was part of this design process,” she said.
McDavid’s understanding of fashion started with her great-grandmother, who was a seamstress. Her mother had a keen interest in fashion and took McDavid to her first fashion show around the age of 10. Over the years, McDavid got to know numerous designers through her network, as well as her mother’s, but she said Burnett stood out. So much so that McDavid asked the designer how was it that she was not working independently. Like many designers, the idea of starting a signature company was something

Alabama Chanin Will Be Back in the City During New York Fashion Week

SOUTH OF THE CITY: After a nine-year break from New York Fashion Week, Alabama Chanin will be back on the scene with a private showing Sept. 4 to Sept. 7 at the Bowery Hotel.
The label’s namesake, Natalie Chanin, has been quietly building the sustainable-focused business in Florence, Ala. Committed to cultivating craftsmanship via the artisans and seamstresses that help to produce the collection, the company has been rooted in sustainable production for nearly 20 years. Its offerings are a combination of hand-sewn and machine-made garments. Chanin said, “It feels like our latest designs really stand out from work we’ve done in recent years, so it was important to us to join NYFW again. We’ve worked for many years now to build our manufacturing facility, improve our U.S.-based organic supply chain and develop these new designs.”
Chanin consults with other designers and brands such as Patagonia. For more than four years, the label has been working on a line of upcycled products using down jackets from Patagonia’s recycling program. Recently, Alabama Chanin has been exploring “the future of craft” with a major athletic company. “As our manufacturing capabilities have grown, so have the opportunities to work closely with established brands,” Chanin said.

Saks Backs New York Times, Sacai ‘Truth’ Capsule With Window

The New York Times is getting bit more fashionable.
With a small collaboration with Sacai, which created for fall a T-shirt and hoodie featuring the paper’s “Truth” campaign that rolled out last year after the President Trump-led advent of public figures labeling any unfriendly news story “fake news,” the Times’ mission is getting its own window display at Saks Fifth Avenue.
Although the small collection gives Saks the opportunity to participate in the trendy “drop” concept by releasing a capsule along with the window reveal, Yumi Shin, general merchandising manager of Saks, said there was a little more to wanting the collaboration.
“We felt Saks is an iconic New York department store and The New York Times is an iconic New York publisher and we wanted to get behind the capsule,” Shin said. “We feel that Sacai is such a creative brand and is super authentic in its approach and the message is very relevant today, so we wanted to support it.”
Steve Mayne, executive director of commerce at the Times, said the paper was “thrilled” to work with Sacai, which includes a licensing agreement, not least because it “was an excellent opportunity to amplify the message” of the Truth campaign.

Christian Siriano on Emmys, Inclusivity and New York Fashion Week

Christian Siriano made a summer stop in Los Angeles this week, just in time for Thursday’s Emmy nominations announcement. That night, he hosted a dinner at Chateau Marmont with 11 Honoré, the size-inclusive luxury e-commerce site cofounded by Patrick Herning and Kathryn Retzer. Said Herning, “Christian was one of the first designers we launched with and he’s still one of our best-selling designers a year later. He’s really on board with changing the game.” The designer’s inclusive approach to retail and celebrity dressing has heightened his profile, but he remains as down-to-earth and energetic as ever. “I’m always up sending e-mails in the middle of the night, because otherwise, what are you going to do? We’re there for our customers.”

Escada Preps for First New York Fashion Week Show, Amid Brand Revamp

LONDON — Escada has been in the process of refreshing its image, having recruited designer Niall Sloan and introduced a new store concept on London’s Sloane Street last year.
Now, to mark this shift in direction and the brand’s 40th anniversary, the German label is planning its first runway show during New York Fashion Week, in a bid to highlight its international appeal and speak to a broader audience.
“Given all our activities around the refreshing of our brand, we felt that this was a fantastic moment to go out and join an international fashion week. We decided to go to New York because the U.S. is one of our core markets; we have been there since day one. We have a strong retail presence in the country and very strong relationships with some of the best department stores,” said Iris Epple-Righi, the brand’s chief executive officer. “We need to show the brand to a wider audience, which we wouldn’t have been able to [achieve] if we were to only do a presentation.”
The show — which will host buyers, press, as well as the brand’s most important customers from across the globe — will also offer Sloan a platform to showcase his

EXCLUSIVE: VFiles Announces Runway 10 Show, Mentor Committee for New York Fashion Week

It’s back to the runway for VFiles, which will be holding its 10th show on Sept. 5.
Last season, instead of the traditional runway/performance extravaganza the company hosts, it staged “Be Heart, Make Noise,” an immersive music and fashion event done in collaboration with Adidas Originals. In the past, runway shows included celebrity guest judges such as Khloé Kardashian and Young Thug. For VFiles Runway 10, the brand is bringing its event a bit more down to earth by, for the first time, appointing a committee of eight industry leaders that will select and mentor show contestants throughout their journey to New York Fashion Week. After that, the VFiles team will provide mentorship for the following season. The pivot brings a slightly more serious — yet welcome — tone to the show that has otherwise been high on experimental fashion.
The mentor committee includes: Julie Anne Quay, founder and chief executive officer of VFiles; Laura Brown, editor in chief of InStyle magazine; Rio Uribe, designer and founder of Gypsy Sport; Candy Pratts Price, fashion consultant; Anna Trevelyan, stylist and creative consultant; Erin Magee, founder of MadeMe; Paul Cupo, designer, and James Costas-Michael, merchandise director of VFiles.
Also new for the season;

H&M Responds to Union Rally Outside of Herald Square Flagship in New York

About 100 union activists, sales associates and elected officials rallied outside of H&M’s Herald Square flagship Wednesday afternoon calling for a fair new contract.
If the gigantic inflatable rat with an “Empower Workers” sign wasn’t enough of a clue to passersby, activists wore red T-shirts imprinted with Local 1102 Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union. At times chanting “Union, union” and “Stand Up, Fight Back,” supporters cheered intermittently, holding signs that read, “Bad Pay Is Out of Fashion,” and “H&M Clopenings Can Kill.” Curtailing “clopening’s” — the practice of having an employee close a store at night and open the same location the following day — is one of the demands union members are asking of H&M management. They are also negotiating for guaranteed hours for part-timers, dental and vision benefits for workers, the right to time off after five consecutive days worked and longevity increases for employees with three years or more of tenure.
Having met with H&M representatives earlier Wednesday and with other meetings scheduled for later, Alvin Ramnarain, president of the Local 1002 of the RWDSU, said he doesn’t expect the matter to be resolved quickly. Answering a few questions, while the band Larry & the Larrytones warmed up the

New York Men’s Dates to Move to June in 2019

Don’t get too attached to the July dates for New York Fashion Week: Men’s — they’re changing.
Starting next year, the Council of Fashion Designers of America will shift the dates for the spring men’s shows to the first week in June. This will not only coincide with the fledgling New York women’s resort season, but will also allow American designers to show before their European counterparts.
London has historically kicked off the spring season with shows that start this year on Saturday. That’s followed by Pitti Uomo in Florence, Milan and Paris. For six seasons, NYFW: Men’s has brought up the rear with shows in mid-July.
But a successful mega, 10-day, dual-gender fashion week this past February has prompted the shift starting in 2019.
“The July timing is problematic for a lot of brands,” said Mark Beckham, vice president of marketing for the Council of Fashion Designers of America. “So this will be the last NYFW: Men’s in July.”
In February, he said, the men’s shows will once again be timed to run on the Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday before the women’s calendar starts on Thursday. ”It worked really well,” he said. But the spring shows will now start before London.
“The designers are really

Harrys of London Opens New York Flagship

NEW YORK — Charles Cohen is just getting started.
It was just over a year ago that the billionaire commercial real estate developer purchased Harrys of London, a U.K.-based footwear and accessories label. And today, Cohen has opened the doors to the brand’s first retail store, a boutique with 770 square feet of selling space on Park Avenue and 57th Street. The store is adjacent to a space that will house a 2,000-square-foot Richard James store, the other British men’s wear brand in which Cohen bought a majority stake last March. That store is expected to open in late August.
Both brands were personal favorites of Cohen’s and were searching for new owners, so the developer stepped up and purchased them. But he’s hardly been an absentee owner. He serves as chairman for both labels and has immersed himself in reinventing the brands by modernizing and updating them.
“It’s been an exciting adventure,” Cohen said. “And it’s gone better than I ever imagined.” In fact, he said he’s just about to finalize his third fashion acquisition, one that will be “complementary” to Harrys and Richard James. He declined to provide more details, but said this one is not a British brand.
At Harrys, Cohen parted ways

Gentle Monster Pops Up at Dover Street Market New York

Gentle Monster has popped up at Dover Street Market New York.
The South Korean eyewear brand’s ephemeral boutique is mounted through June 18 on Dover Street Market’s first floor.
A limited-edition, black-and-gold version of Gentle Monster’s Cobalt style has been created to mark the occasion.
While an eyewear brand, Gentle Monster is also regarded for its innovative and experimental retailing strategies. It employs carpenters and architects full-time to execute conceptual interior design projects.
For Dover Street Market, the brand has found inspiration in the extraterrestrial. The company has dubbed its installation “Passengers,” predicated on a narrative where “a crew of extraterrestrial creatures embark on a passage through time and space in search of their next home. Collecting precious stones and flowers along the way, the crew is able to produce energy for their ship and tools.”
This manifests as wire, wood and stone sculptures that resemble the work of artist Nick Cave.
“Dover Street Market is a resting place for creation and magnitude, and our presence within the DSM New York space feels natural because of this. Our pursuit of experimental and episodic content is rooted in the in-person experience. It’s in these conceptual spaces that our creations are able to blur the divide between eyewear

Patti + Ricky Focuses on Inclusive Design With New York Pop-up and Collaborations

ALL ARE WELCOME: Raised by parents whose careers were rooted in fashion retail, Alexandra Connell had an insider’s view of brand building from a young age. But her father Steven Bochner, who led Swatch’s sales into the U.S. and later served as president of Christian Dior Jewelry, always advised her to choose a different field.
He only coalesced, when she asked, “What if I sold empowerment?”
Her online store, pattiandricky.com, specializes in apparel and accessories for the physically challenged. “He always wanted me to help people and he knew that I was very passionate about wanting to help people with disabilities,” she said.
Launched about 10 months ago, the multibrand e-tailer caters to the more than 50 million Americans with either a mental or physical disability. Diagnosed with dyslexia and ADHD as a child, Connell was always keenly aware of how disabilities and looking or acting differently could have a major impact on a person’s life. The company’s name is a tribute to her mother Patti who died 10 years ago and her cousin Ricky who is unable to walk or speak.
“My mother was always on trend and when she got sick with a brain tumor, there was nothing fashionable out there for her.

Calix by Massimo Palmiero Makes Debut in New York at Guggeheim

JEWELS IN THE ROUND: While some designers prefer to edge into New York to see what business they might reap, Massimo Palmiero dove right in, showcasing his jewels Wednesday night at the Guggenheim Museum.
Eleven dark-haired models in sleeveless black dresses and long satin gloves helped show off his Calix one-of-a-kind jewelry. Entwined around a black circular banquette in the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed rotunda, their circular display mirrored the building’s iconic skylight 90 feet above. While guests like Gabby Karan and Gianpaolo De Felice circulated, the company’s namesake spoke of how spherical designs have been integral to his work for years.
Admiring the Guggenheim’s winding path, Palmiero said, “I like the architecture and I like this design. I have been doing this spiral design for more than 15 years [leafing through a book of his work to illustrate that point.] The shape is something you see in my work. But everything that I am showing is new. Everything here tonight is one-of-a-kind pieces.”
Not interested in opening stores or opening retail accounts, the Italy-based Palmiero hosted a cocktail party to attract new clients. The fact that the Italian actress Monica Bellucci, a longtime client, was recently photographed in a magazine wearing Calix jewels

The Standard High Line Brings ‘Parkland 17’ Installation to New York for ‘March for Our Lives’

The Standard, High Line is supporting the March for Our Lives this weekend with the unveiling of Parkland 17, a commemorative exhibition and call to action curated by artist Calyann Barnett, done with the support of Dwayne Wade. The installation, which was most recently on display at Wynwood Art Walk in Miami on March 10 for a 17-hour residence, is comprised of 17 desks.
Taking place on Saturday and Sunday, the installation will also feature a live mural painting of the phrase “we demand change” by artist Manuel Oliver. The hotel will also have open a call to action center, their ‘ring your rep’ phone booths, where people can phone representatives of Congress regarding gun control.
“The Standard originally became involved when Dwayne Wade approached us while he was working on the Parkland 17 installation for the Wynwood Art Walk. He wanted the installation to commemorate the lives lost, but also offer a call to action, and instinctively recruited the help of our Ring Your Rep phone booth from The Standard Spa, Miami Beach,” said Landis Smithers, chief creative officer of Standard International. “With the March for Our Lives imminent, it felt only right to bring Parkland 17 to our space

Isaac Mizrahi to Host ‘In Your Face-New York’ at Merkin Concert Hall

SHOW ME THE CITY: Isaac Mizrahi has signed up to host “In Your Face-New York,” a multi-sensory mash-up created by Martin Sage that will be held March 12 at Merkin Concert Hall.
“Only too glad” to have been contacted by Sage, Mizrahi said he loves the associations of the people involved — New Yorker cartoonist Roz Chast, New Yorker writer Patricia Marx and CBS Sunday Morning’s and NPR’s “Wait, Wait Don’t Tell Me” panelist Mo Rocca among them. Other participants in the 80-minute show are perfume nose specialist Ann Gottlieb, “How to Be Black” author Baratunde Thurston, “Shocked: My Mother, Schiaparelli and Me” author Patricia Volk and jazz performer Jay Leonhart and 1-Train Band.
“It’s a smart, smart form of entertainment. A lot of ad-libbing goes on in the room that actually happens with the audience. That’s one of the reasons I agreed to do it. I think that’s what I’m good at — if I’m good at something — being in the room with an audience and being on my feet,” Mizrahi said.

Lafayette 148 New York RTW Fall 2018

Creative director Emily Smith’s push to cater to a younger audience for fall was clear. There was a bigger embrace of pattern play and loosely cut silhouettes. Leopard-print calf hair adorned a tailored denim jacket and was also cut into a fully fashioned coat, snakeskin accented the cuffs of a sleek robe coat, and head-to-toe knit dressing was recommended for polished, unfussy office-to-dinner fare. If there was one piece sure to attract a Millennial, it would be the leopard-print bomber jacket.
“Our big message as a brand as we evolve is there’s not always a formula for how people dress,” Smith said. “We have to have fun with it, so I really want customers to be comfortable mixing and matching and playing with it.”
Smith looked to the midcentury interior of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater and its eclectic mix of tartan plaids, Moroccan rugs and graphic stripes for color and print inspiration. She blended patterns for her own take on newness — offering a cotton striped shirtdress in a winter palette of green and red, a windowpane coat with no side seams, and reversible double-print dresses ideal for travel. Items friendlier for yearlong wear included a pair of covetable wide-leg trousers, soft

Upbeat Mood Prevails at New York Men’s Trade Shows

NEW YORK — New year, bright outlook.
That sums up the mood of specialty stores shopping the men’s trade shows here. A strong end to 2017, a soaring stock market and some tempting merchandise options for fall all combined to boost retailers’ spirits.
“Holiday was great,” said Ken Giddon, president of Rothmans, which operates three men’s stores in New York. “There have been some weather difficulties in January but that’s OK. We had a surprisingly strong fall so inventories are not what we had expected. My mood is good — it’s an exciting time to be a retailer.”
He said he has been working more with his suppliers to create partnerships that benefit both. “Every conversation is not: ‘What are you selling and how much is it?’ But it’s, ‘How can we work together.’ That’s what it’s going to take to make the wholesale model work today and I actually enjoy making deals almost more than I enjoy looking at merchandise.”
That said, Giddon did manage to find several brands that he liked at the shows. “I’m surprised at how many great Scandinavian brands there are,” he said, pointing to the Scandinavian Man section at Project. He especially liked Hestra gloves and Cords trousers.

U.K.’s Graduate Fashion Week Travels to New York

SPECIAL RELATIONSHIP: In an effort to strengthen its international ties, Britain’s Graduate Fashion Week plans to mount a showcase in New York on Jan. 16.
“We have a great relationship with three major New York educational institutes: FIT, Pratt and Parsons,” said Graduate Fashion Week creative director Martyn Roberts. “And while in NYC on our weeklong showcase, we plan to visit each institute to see the upcoming talent we can expect on the International Catwalk Competition for 2018.”
Hilary Alexander, a GFW trustee and journalist, said there is a long-standing relationship between U.K. fashion graduates and the American fashion industry. “Many major U.S.-based companies such as Gap and Calvin Klein are hiring British fashion graduates, so it makes perfect sense to make New York the next stop for GFW this January.”
Graduate Fashion Week is a charity, platform and showcase for students from a range of global universities. Patrons include Christopher Bailey, Victoria Beckham, Vivienne Westwood and Nick Knight. This is the first time it is hosting events outside the U.K. and in association with SmartFocus, a digital messaging cloud.

Eclectic to Bring Its French Sensibility to New York City

Franck Malègue has had a long-standing love affair with New York City, so it’s no surprise that he chose Manhattan as the location for his first store outside of Paris.
The owner and designer of Eclectic, a men’s outerwear brand, will open a 1,600-square-foot store at 27 Greene Street, next to The Webster, early next year. It will join his two shops in Paris, in Le Marais and off the Avenue Montaigne, and a concession shop at Le Bon Marché.
The Paris-born Malègue started Eclectic in 2011 after spending several years in brand development for cosmetics, accessories and ready-to-wear companies. The tight collection of coats and jackets blends traditional designs with high-tech materials in a line he describes as “active tailoring,” or “tailored urbanwear” that “bridges together durability, functionality and elegance.”
Eclectic offers just 18 styles and each piece uses a canvas interlining in the front panels and lapels to give the garments shape and employs technical fibers and fabrics such as Cordura, Airnet, bi-stretch cotton and microfibers to provide wind- and water-repellency, stretch and other properties for today’s active man. One example is a sport coat in a 3-D mesh that Nike uses for its shoes.

New York Cares and The Fashion Foundation Help New Yorkers in Need

‘TIS THE SEASON: More than halfway to its goal of collecting 125,000 donated coats, this year’s annual New York Cares Coat Drive has less than a week to go.
New Yorkers can drop off coats at multiple locations including the group’s West 31st Street warehouse, any New York Police Department precinct, all Queens library branches and Grand Central Terminal or Penn Station through Dec. 31. Those who don’t have jackets to give can text “coat” to 41444 to donate money that will be used by the nonprofit to buy and deliver coats. The city has at least 1.7 million people living below the poverty line including 60,000 who are without permanent housing, according to a New York Cares spokeswoman.
The group has collected and donated 1.8 million coats to New Yorkers in need over the past 29 years. This year’s requests from shelters, social service agencies and schools is an increase compared to last year’s tally of 109,000 coats.
Another local group, The Fashion Foundation, recently wrapped up another charitable initiative. Founder Amanda Munz helped to brighten the holidays for 100 students in three different Brooklyn schools by arranging for each of them to receive a complementary gift-laden backpack. Mark Hamill Explains Why He Rode a Wheelchair Through New York Airport

Mark Hamill has responded to worried fans on social media after he was spotted in a wheelchair at a New York airport on Tuesday.

Replying to a fan who asked if he was having health problems, the Star Wars actor wrote that he “tried the old ‘wheelchair trick’” to avoid autograph dealers “who constantly badger” him and his family.

Arriving to the airport at 5 a.m., Hamill was spotted slouched in a wheelchair with a wide brimmed hat pulled low over his face. He was also carrying his dog on his lap.

Hamill celebrated the pup’s birthday later on Twitter, writing, “We arrived in NYC just in time for the 6th birthday of none other than Millie Grace Hamill! Beloved family pet, world traveler & trusted career advisor.”

The actor seemed to be in good health during an appearance on The Ellen Degeneres Show Tuesday, where he spoke about the death of his Star Wars costar Carrie Fisher.

“She’s like an irreplaceable member of the family, but the whole world feels that way,” Hamill said of Fisher, who died last December at the age of 60. “We are all sort of mourning her. I always think of her in the present tense. I don’t think of her in the past. Any time you were with her it was just fun.”

Hamill also seemed to be healthy and in good spirits while surprising guests at Disneyland just two weeks ago. The actor popped up on the new ride, Star Tours – The Adventures Continue, and chatted with fans.

Hamill reprises his role as Luke Skywalker in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, hitting theaters Dec. 15.

Thom Sweeney Opens First Store Outside the U.K. in New York

NEW YORK — Thom Sweeney is making a statement with its first U.S. store.
The London-based brand that got its start as a bespoke maker in 2006, today will take the wraps off a 3,000-square-foot store at 362 West Broadway in SoHo — its first unit outside its home country.
The store stocks the brand’s ready-to-wear — which it started producing in 2013 — and has a large room dedicated to fittings for its signature made-to-measure and custom garments. It also features a special cutting room where a U.K.-based cutter will visit once a month to tend to clients along with a bar and lounge areas to encourage customers to stay a while.
“We think it stands out because there’s nothing else in the area like it,” said Thom Whiddett, who founded the brand with Luke Sweeney.
The two men met while they were both working for British tailor Timothy Everest — Whiddett as an apprentice and Sweeney as the head of the made-to-measure department. They decided to team to create the Thom Sweeney label, setting up shop in a small apartment in Mayfair, where they took private orders.
In 2009, they opened a bespoke studio in a former art gallery on Weighhouse Street, followed

Parker Ladd, 89, Husband of Arnold Scaasi, Dies in New York City

Parker Ladd, 89, whose name had been linked to Arnold Scaasi for 53 years, died Tuesday at his Beekman Place apartment.
The Vermonter attended the University of Vermont and then served in the U.S. Army. After returning to civilian life, he moved to Sweden to work as a bookseller, then relocated to Los Angeles before eventually settling in New York. New to the city in the summer of 1962, Ladd was living in the New York Athletic Club when he encountered Scaasi. Walking home from what he always called “a dinner party that was not very much fun,” Ladd was strolling along Central Park South window-shopping when a Lincoln Continental pulled up and out stepped Scaasi carrying goat-skin gloves — on a July night. Ladd said he thought, “Oh my God, he’s carrying gloves getting out of that big Lincoln. Who is this guy?’” said Michael Selleck, a longtime friend. “Arnold invited him for a drink and the rest was history. They were truly together from that moment on.”
After Scaasi’s death in 2015, Ladd recalled, “I was a real country boy from Island Post, Vermont, where my grandfather had a farm and was an inventor. Arnold was a pretty sophisticated New

Street Signs: ‘Friendly’ Sneakersnstuff Rolls Out Welcome Mat in New York

Erik Fagerlind, who cofounded the specialty sneaker chain Sneakersnstuff with Peter Jansson in 1999, says 80 percent of its business now comes from e-commerce sales — up from 50 percent five years ago. But physical retail remains a significant part of its growth strategy outside of home country of Sweden, having planted shops in London, Paris, Berlin and now New York.
“In a world where everything is available and accessible, you have to provide a little bit more than product,” Fagerlind said. “You have to provide the service to be relevant with your consumer.”
Sneakersnstuff will bring its popular concept to New York in early December. The 3,500-square-foot shop will be located in the Meatpacking District, designed by Jenny Askenfors of Bofink Design Studio and feature a basement bar. Wil Whitney, who has deep roots in the New York skate and streetwear scene — he was a former manager at Stüssy, helped start Nom de Guerre, a men’s wear brand and Brooklyn shop that closed in 2010, and most recently worked for Noah — will manage the boutique. There are plans to open a Los Angeles flagship in 2018.
In Fagerlind’s view, the Meatpacking District was the ideal spot because it’s not saturated with

Sarah Jessica Parker to Open New York Pop-up Shop

Sarah Jessica Parker’s SJP by Sarah Jessica Parker brand will open a New York pop-up for the holiday season.
To be located at 640 Fifth Avenue with an entrance at 52nd Street, the 1,600-square-foot shop will sell an assortment of shoes — including styles reissued from the brand’s 2014 launch collection.
SJP by Sarah Jessica Parker’s line of little black dresses and handbags will also be on sale.
The shop is to be open on Black Friday, Nov. 24, and remain open through Dec. 3. Parker is expected to periodically drop into the store to greet shoppers.
“Having a home in New York for our SJP Collection has been only a seeming fantasy since we launched our brand almost four years ago. So it is with unbridled excitement that we share the news that we have indeed found that home, right off Fifth Avenue, in the heart of Midtown,” Parker said.
The actress, producer and designer’s business partner, George Malkemus, added: ”The very idea of the ultimate New York girl opening a pop-up and, on top of it, one opposite the famous 21 Club, has me pinching myself again and again. I couldn’t be happier for my dear, dear friend and partner, Sarah Jessica Parker.”

British Jewelry Designer Shaun Leane’s Personal Archive to be Auctioned at Sotheby’s New York

SHAUN’S SHOWCASE: The personal collection of British jewelry designer Shaun Leane is set to go under the hammer at Sotheby’s New York in December.
The designer said the collection represents “a level of creative freedom that has no parallel today and a time when jewelry, performance art and fashion fused as one. It has prompted questions in my own mind as to the important role the collection still has to play in conversations surrounding the relationship between these vital creative industries.”
He’s hoping the auction will address the questions he asked himself when making the jewels: “Is it art? Is it fashion? Is it jewelry?”
The sale is part of the auction house’s “A Life of Luxury” series, and will see 45 bespoke pieces thrust under the spotlight. Leane made the pieces for Alexander McQueen, his old friend and colleague of 17 years, for the latter’s shows and for Givenchy, and for clients such as Daphne Guinness, Isabella Blow, Kate Moss and Sarah Jessica Parker.
Highlights include the coiled corset from McQueen’s The Overlook collection for fall 1999 to 2000 that took its cue from the film “The Shining.” It was created with 97 aluminum coils. There is also a silver crown of thorns

Why Supreme Opened a Second New York Store

NEW YORK — After more than 20 years of being in business, Supreme’s Manhattan store was beginning to bust at the seams.
The streetwear brand had alleviated the lines and crowds with a new release system — customers no longer need to camp out as they put their name on a list and enter the store during a designated time slot — but demand for the product has continued to increase, which is why the team opted for a 3,000-square-foot store in Brooklyn at 152 Grand Street between Bedford Avenue and Berry Street. On Thursday morning, when the shop opened to the public, Mayor Bill De Blasio commemorated the occasion by cutting the ribbon, which was appropriately covered with the Supreme logo.
“The truth is we maxed out on the Manhattan space. We were at capacity,” said Angelo Baque, Supreme’s former brand director who started his own creative agency but still oversees art direction for the company. “We couldn’t serve any more customers or sell more items.”
The new, larger space follows Supreme’s retail formula: wooden fixtures, sparse merchandising that lines the perimeter of the store, a flat screen playing skate videos in the window and a couple of concrete blocks for seating. The

Brett Johnson to Open Store in New York

Brett Johnson is taking the plunge into retail.
The designer, who launched his eponymous men’s wear collection in 2013, will open his first store in SoHo on Thursday.
The unit at 109 Mercer Street between Prince and Spring Streets, will have 1,600 square feet of selling space and around 1,400 square feet devoted to showrooms and offices. There will be a soft opening this week and a grand-opening party is scheduled for Oct. 12.
Johnson, who was formerly based in Virginia, has relocated to New York to be closer to the business.
“For us, it’s just easier to control everything from out of the store,” he said. “Our clientele is primarily based in New York, so it just made sense.”
Johnson, the son of Black Entertainment Television founders Robert and Sheila Johnson, got his start designing his own interpretation of the Nike Air Force One sneakers and then branched out into apparel. The Brett Johnson line of outerwear, knitwear, woven shirts and trousers are all manufactured in Florence.
The collection has been sold at Neiman Marcus as well as a handful of specialty stores in the U.S. He said the best-selling items are outerwear and knitwear, but the store will also offer made-to-measure, a category that

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio Gets a Public Reminder to Save the Garment Center From Designers and Supporters

MAYORAL APPEAL: Rather than just send a letter to New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio asking — for a second time — that the Garment Center Steering Committee’s recommendations be considered before any changes to the zoning are made, Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney (N.Y.) and a group of supporters held a press event Saturday morning.
On the rooftop of Nanette Lepore’s showroom, Lepore, Bob Savage, Yeohlee Teng, Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer and about 25 others voiced their concern about the potential upheaval of the neighborhood’s ecosystem. Standing beside a chart that outlined the garment center’s boundaries, Maloney recalled the time in the Seventies when the district was created by former Mayor Ed Koch and how he spoke “forcefully” about the need “to preserve this dynamic, creative ecosystem. He had that vision and every other mayor has kept that vision. I’m all for development in Brooklyn, but there’s room for everybody.”
Earlier this year city officials proposed a $ 136 million “Made in New York” campus at Bush Terminal in Brooklyn’s Sunset Park. About 40 Garment Center supporters helped to stall plans to set that plan in motion, by staging another press event days before an Aug. 21 City Planning Commission meeting.
