Saks Backs New York Times, Sacai ‘Truth’ Capsule With Window

The New York Times is getting bit more fashionable.
With a small collaboration with Sacai, which created for fall a T-shirt and hoodie featuring the paper’s “Truth” campaign that rolled out last year after the President Trump-led advent of public figures labeling any unfriendly news story “fake news,” the Times’ mission is getting its own window display at Saks Fifth Avenue.
Although the small collection gives Saks the opportunity to participate in the trendy “drop” concept by releasing a capsule along with the window reveal, Yumi Shin, general merchandising manager of Saks, said there was a little more to wanting the collaboration.
“We felt Saks is an iconic New York department store and The New York Times is an iconic New York publisher and we wanted to get behind the capsule,” Shin said. “We feel that Sacai is such a creative brand and is super authentic in its approach and the message is very relevant today, so we wanted to support it.”
Steve Mayne, executive director of commerce at the Times, said the paper was “thrilled” to work with Sacai, which includes a licensing agreement, not least because it “was an excellent opportunity to amplify the message” of the Truth campaign.

Christian Siriano made a summer stop in Los Angeles this week, just in time for Thursday’s Emmy nominations announcement. That night, he hosted a dinner at Chateau Marmont with 11 Honoré, the size-inclusive luxury e-commerce site cofounded by Patrick Herning and Kathryn Retzer. Said Herning, “Christian was one of the first designers we launched with and he’s still one of our best-selling designers a year later. He’s really on board with changing the game.” The designer’s inclusive approach to retail and celebrity dressing has heightened his profile, but he remains as down-to-earth and energetic as ever. “I’m always up sending e-mails in the middle of the night, because otherwise, what are you going to do? We’re there for our customers.”

Escada Preps for First New York Fashion Week Show, Amid Brand Revamp

LONDON — Escada has been in the process of refreshing its image, having recruited designer Niall Sloan and introduced a new store concept on London’s Sloane Street last year.
Now, to mark this shift in direction and the brand’s 40th anniversary, the German label is planning its first runway show during New York Fashion Week, in a bid to highlight its international appeal and speak to a broader audience.
“Given all our activities around the refreshing of our brand, we felt that this was a fantastic moment to go out and join an international fashion week. We decided to go to New York because the U.S. is one of our core markets; we have been there since day one. We have a strong retail presence in the country and very strong relationships with some of the best department stores,” said Iris Epple-Righi, the brand’s chief executive officer. “We need to show the brand to a wider audience, which we wouldn’t have been able to [achieve] if we were to only do a presentation.”

It’s back to the runway for VFiles, which will be holding its 10th show on Sept. 5.
Last season, instead of the traditional runway/performance extravaganza the company hosts, it staged “Be Heart, Make Noise,” an immersive music and fashion event done in collaboration with Adidas Originals. In the past, runway shows included celebrity guest judges such as Khloé Kardashian and Young Thug. For VFiles Runway 10, the brand is bringing its event a bit more down to earth by, for the first time, appointing a committee of eight industry leaders that will select and mentor show contestants throughout their journey to New York Fashion Week. After that, the VFiles team will provide mentorship for the following season. The pivot brings a slightly more serious — yet welcome — tone to the show that has otherwise been high on experimental fashion.

H&M Responds to Union Rally Outside of Herald Square Flagship in New York

About 100 union activists, sales associates and elected officials rallied outside of H&M’s Herald Square flagship Wednesday afternoon calling for a fair new contract.
If the gigantic inflatable rat with an “Empower Workers” sign wasn’t enough of a clue to passersby, activists wore red T-shirts imprinted with Local 1102 Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union. At times chanting “Union, union” and “Stand Up, Fight Back,” supporters cheered intermittently, holding signs that read, “Bad Pay Is Out of Fashion,” and “H&M Clopenings Can Kill.” Curtailing “clopening’s” — the practice of having an employee close a store at night and open the same location the following day — is one of the demands union members are asking of H&M management. They are also negotiating for guaranteed hours for part-timers, dental and vision benefits for workers, the right to time off after five consecutive days worked and longevity increases for employees with three years or more of tenure.

New York Men’s Dates to Move to June in 2019

Don’t get too attached to the July dates for New York Fashion Week: Men’s — they’re changing.
Starting next year, the Council of Fashion Designers of America will shift the dates for the spring men’s shows to the first week in June. This will not only coincide with the fledgling New York women’s resort season, but will also allow American designers to show before their European counterparts.
London has historically kicked off the spring season with shows that start this year on Saturday. That’s followed by Pitti Uomo in Florence, Milan and Paris. For six seasons, NYFW: Men’s has brought up the rear with shows in mid-July.
But a successful mega, 10-day, dual-gender fashion week this past February has prompted the shift starting in 2019.
“The July timing is problematic for a lot of brands,” said Mark Beckham, vice president of marketing for the Council of Fashion Designers of America. “So this will be the last NYFW: Men’s in July.”
In February, he said, the men’s shows will once again be timed to run on the Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday before the women’s calendar starts on Thursday. ”It worked really well,” he said. But the spring shows will now start before London.

Harrys of London Opens New York Flagship

NEW YORK — Charles Cohen is just getting started.
It was just over a year ago that the billionaire commercial real estate developer purchased Harrys of London, a U.K.-based footwear and accessories label. And today, Cohen has opened the doors to the brand’s first retail store, a boutique with 770 square feet of selling space on Park Avenue and 57th Street. The store is adjacent to a space that will house a 2,000-square-foot Richard James store, the other British men’s wear brand in which Cohen bought a majority stake last March. That store is expected to open in late August.
Both brands were personal favorites of Cohen’s and were searching for new owners, so the developer stepped up and purchased them. But he’s hardly been an absentee owner. He serves as chairman for both labels and has immersed himself in reinventing the brands by modernizing and updating them.
“It’s been an exciting adventure,” Cohen said. “And it’s gone better than I ever imagined.” In fact, he said he’s just about to finalize his third fashion acquisition, one that will be “complementary” to Harrys and Richard James. He declined to provide more details, but said this one is not a British brand.

The company has dubbed its installation “Passengers,” predicated on a narrative where “a crew of extraterrestrial creatures embark on a passage through time and space in search of their next home. Collecting precious stones and flowers along the way, the crew is able to produce energy for their ship and tools.”
This manifests as wire, wood and stone sculptures that resemble the work of artist Nick Cave.

Olivier Lapidus to Headline French Fashion Week Event — in New York

FRENCH TOUCH: His time at Lanvin may have been short-lived, but Olivier Lapidus remains committed to his mission of establishing a “conservatory of French savoir-faire” reconciling “ancient craftsmanship with technology.”
Dedicated to his own “maison” since exiting Lanvin in March after two seasons, following the brand’s acquisition by Chinese conglomerate Fosun Fashion Group, the designer is set to headline the inaugural edition of French Fashion Week — in New York.
Scheduled to run March 27 to 29, 2019, at a venue in Midtown Manhattan, the event, organized by French Touch USA, will present a selection of established and emerging men’s and women’s brands from across the fashion, jewelry, accessories and fashion-tech categories, according to a statement.
Participating brands will present collections in the venue’s French Fashion Room and be given access to a dedicated space for shows as well as networking events.
The program will also include a French Fashion Week awards ceremony, book signings, film screenings and an exhibition of fashion photography, as well as a French pop-up space open to the public.

BILL’S NEW YORK: Street photographer Bill Cunningham was unquestionably a man of the city. The sidewalks of New York were his round-the-clock runway. Now the New York Historical Society has announced a special exhibition, “Celebrating Bill Cunningham,” that will be view on June 8 through Sept. 9.
Friends and friends’ family members of The New York Times lensman, who died in 2016 at the age of 87, provided the wide-ranging items for the show. Some New Yorkers will recognize the bicycle he used to pedal to and from assignments regardless of the weather or the hour. There’s also the “Bill Cunningham Corner” street sign that was temporarily installed at the southeast corner of Fifth Avenue and 57th Street, the photographer’s preferred perch. Visitors to the Upper West Side museum will also find his first camera, an Olympus Pen-D 35mm, and his signature sparrow blue jacket. ALL ARE WELCOME: Raised by parents whose careers were rooted in fashion retail, Alexandra Connell had an insider’s view of brand building from a young age. But her father Steven Bochner, who led Swatch’s sales into the U.S. and later served as president of Christian Dior Jewelry, always advised her to choose a different field.
He only coalesced, when she asked, “What if I sold empowerment?”
Her online store, pattiandricky.com, specializes in apparel and accessories for the physically challenged. “He always wanted me to help people and he knew that I was very passionate about wanting to help people with disabilities,” she said.
Launched about 10 months ago, the multibrand e-tailer caters to the more than 50 million Americans with either a mental or physical disability. Diagnosed with dyslexia and ADHD as a child, Connell was always keenly aware of how disabilities and looking or acting differently could have a major impact on a person’s life. The company’s name is a tribute to her mother Patti who died 10 years ago and her cousin Ricky who is unable to walk or speak.

Calix by Massimo Palmiero Makes Debut in New York at Guggeheim

JEWELS IN THE ROUND: While some designers prefer to edge into New York to see what business they might reap, Massimo Palmiero dove right in, showcasing his jewels Wednesday night at the Guggenheim Museum.
Eleven dark-haired models in sleeveless black dresses and long satin gloves helped show off his Calix one-of-a-kind jewelry. Entwined around a black circular banquette in the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed rotunda, their circular display mirrored the building’s iconic skylight 90 feet above. While guests like Gabby Karan and Gianpaolo De Felice circulated, the company’s namesake spoke of how spherical designs have been integral to his work for years.
Admiring the Guggenheim’s winding path, Palmiero said, “I like the architecture and I like this design. I have been doing this spiral design for more than 15 years [leafing through a book of his work to illustrate that point.] The shape is something you see in my work. But everything that I am showing is new. Everything here tonight is one-of-a-kind pieces.”

The Standard High Line Brings ‘Parkland 17’ Installation to New York for ‘March for Our Lives’

The Standard, High Line is supporting the March for Our Lives this weekend with the unveiling of Parkland 17, a commemorative exhibition and call to action curated by artist Calyann Barnett, done with the support of Dwayne Wade. The installation, which was most recently on display at Wynwood Art Walk in Miami on March 10 for a 17-hour residence, is comprised of 17 desks.
Taking place on Saturday and Sunday, the installation will also feature a live mural painting of the phrase “we demand change” by artist Manuel Oliver. The hotel will also have open a call to action center, their ‘ring your rep’ phone booths, where people can phone representatives of Congress regarding gun control.
“The Standard originally became involved when Dwayne Wade approached us while he was working on the Parkland 17 installation for the Wynwood Art Walk. Upbeat Mood Prevails at New York Men’s Trade Shows

NEW YORK — New year, bright outlook.
That sums up the mood of specialty stores shopping the men’s trade shows here. A strong end to 2017, a soaring stock market and some tempting merchandise options for fall all combined to boost retailers’ spirits.
“Holiday was great,” said Ken Giddon, president of Rothmans, which operates three men’s stores in New York. “There have been some weather difficulties in January but that’s OK. We had a surprisingly strong fall so inventories are not what we had expected. My mood is good — it’s an exciting time to be a retailer.”
He said he has been working more with his suppliers to create partnerships that benefit both. “Every conversation is not: ‘What are you selling and how much is it?’ But it’s, ‘How can we work together.’ That’s what it’s going to take to make the wholesale model work today and I actually enjoy making deals almost more than I enjoy looking at merchandise.”
That said, Giddon did manage to find several brands that he liked at the shows. “I’m surprised at how many great Scandinavian brands there are,” he said, pointing to the Scandinavian Man section at Project. He especially liked Hestra gloves and Cords trousers.

U.K.’s Graduate Fashion Week Travels to New York

SPECIAL RELATIONSHIP: In an effort to strengthen its international ties, Britain’s Graduate Fashion Week plans to mount a showcase in New York on Jan. 16.
“We have a great relationship with three major New York educational institutes: FIT, Pratt and Parsons,” said Graduate Fashion Week creative director Martyn Roberts. “And while in NYC on our weeklong showcase, we plan to visit each institute to see the upcoming talent we can expect on the International Catwalk Competition for 2018.”
Hilary Alexander, a GFW trustee and journalist, said there is a long-standing relationship between U.K. fashion graduates and the American fashion industry. “Many major U.S.-based companies such as Gap and Calvin Klein are hiring British fashion graduates, so it makes perfect sense to make New York the next stop for GFW this January.”
Graduate Fashion Week is a charity, platform and showcase for students from a range of global universities. Patrons include Christopher Bailey, Victoria Beckham, Vivienne Westwood and Nick Knight. This is the first time it is hosting events outside the U.K. and in association with SmartFocus, a digital messaging cloud.

Eclectic to Bring Its French Sensibility to New York City

Franck Malègue has had a long-standing love affair with New York City, so it’s no surprise that he chose Manhattan as the location for his first store outside of Paris.
The owner and designer of Eclectic, a men’s outerwear brand, will open a 1,600-square-foot store at 27 Greene Street, next to The Webster, early next year. It will join his two shops in Paris, in Le Marais and off the Avenue Montaigne, and a concession shop at Le Bon Marché.
The Paris-born Malègue started Eclectic in 2011 after spending several years in brand development for cosmetics, accessories and ready-to-wear companies. The tight collection of coats and jackets blends traditional designs with high-tech materials in a line he describes as “active tailoring,” or “tailored urbanwear” that “bridges together durability, functionality and elegance.”
Eclectic offers just 18 styles and each piece uses a canvas interlining in the front panels and lapels to give the garments shape and employs technical fibers and fabrics such as Cordura, Airnet, bi-stretch cotton and microfibers to provide wind- and water-repellency, stretch and other properties for today’s active man. One example is a sport coat in a 3-D mesh that Nike uses for its shoes.

New York Cares and The Fashion Foundation Help New Yorkers in Need

‘TIS THE SEASON: More than halfway to its goal of collecting 125,000 donated coats, this year’s annual New York Cares Coat Drive has less than a week to go.
New Yorkers can drop off coats at multiple locations including the group’s West 31st Street warehouse, any New York Police Department precinct, all Queens library branches and Grand Central Terminal or Penn Station through Dec. 31. Those who don’t have jackets to give can text “coat” to 41444 to donate money that will be used by the nonprofit to buy and deliver coats. The city has at least 1.7 million people living below the poverty line including 60,000 who are without permanent housing, according to a New York Cares spokeswoman.
The group has collected and donated 1.8 million coats to New Yorkers in need over the past 29 years. This year’s requests from shelters, social service agencies and schools is an increase compared to last year’s tally of 109,000 coats.
Another local group, The Fashion Foundation, recently wrapped up another charitable initiative. Founder Amanda Munz helped to brighten the holidays for 100 students in three different Brooklyn schools by arranging for each of them to receive a complementary gift-laden backpack. Mark Hamill has responded to worried fans on social media after he was spotted in a wheelchair at a New York airport on Tuesday.

Replying to a fan who asked if he was having health problems, the Star Wars actor wrote that he “tried the old ‘wheelchair trick’” to avoid autograph dealers “who constantly badger” him and his family.

Arriving to the airport at 5 a.m., Hamill was spotted slouched in a wheelchair with a wide brimmed hat pulled low over his face. He was also carrying his dog on his lap.

The actor seemed to be in good health during an appearance on The Ellen Degeneres Show Tuesday, where he spoke about the death of his Star Wars costar Carrie Fisher.

“She’s like an irreplaceable member of the family, but the whole world feels that way,” Hamill said of Fisher, who died last December at the age of 60. “We are all sort of mourning her. I always think of her in the present tense. I don’t think of her in the past. Any time you were with her it was just fun.”

Hamill also seemed to be healthy and in good spirits while surprising guests at Disneyland just two weeks ago. The actor popped up on the new ride, Star Tours – The Adventures Continue, and chatted with fans.

Hamill reprises his role as Luke Skywalker in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, hitting theaters Dec. 15.

Thom Sweeney Opens First Store Outside the U.K. in New York

NEW YORK — Thom Sweeney is making a statement with its first U.S. store.
The London-based brand that got its start as a bespoke maker in 2006, today will take the wraps off a 3,000-square-foot store at 362 West Broadway in SoHo — its first unit outside its home country.
The store stocks the brand’s ready-to-wear — which it started producing in 2013 — and has a large room dedicated to fittings for its signature made-to-measure and custom garments. It also features a special cutting room where a U.K.-based cutter will visit once a month to tend to clients along with a bar and lounge areas to encourage customers to stay a while.
“We think it stands out because there’s nothing else in the area like it,” said Thom Whiddett, who founded the brand with Luke Sweeney.
The two men met while they were both working for British tailor Timothy Everest — Whiddett as an apprentice and Sweeney as the head of the made-to-measure department. They decided to team to create the Thom Sweeney label, setting up shop in a small apartment in Mayfair, where they took private orders.

Parker Ladd, 89, Husband of Arnold Scaasi, Dies in New York City

Parker Ladd, 89, whose name had been linked to Arnold Scaasi for 53 years, died Tuesday at his Beekman Place apartment.
The Vermonter attended the University of Vermont and then served in the U.S. Army. After returning to civilian life, he moved to Sweden to work as a bookseller, then relocated to Los Angeles before eventually settling in New York. New to the city in the summer of 1962, Ladd was living in the New York Athletic Club when he encountered Scaasi. Walking home from what he always called “a dinner party that was not very much fun,” Ladd was strolling along Central Park South window-shopping when a Lincoln Continental pulled up and out stepped Scaasi carrying goat-skin gloves — on a July night. Ladd said he thought, “Oh my God, he’s carrying gloves getting out of that big Lincoln. Who is this guy?’” said Michael Selleck, a longtime friend. “Arnold invited him for a drink and the rest was history. They were truly together from that moment on.”

Paris-based contemporary fashion brand Gerard Darel will expand into the U.S. with the opening of freestanding boutiques in New York and Los Angeles beginning this month. The New York flagship will open at 145 Spring Street in SoHo on Nov. 8 and the Los Angeles location, in Westfield Century City, will open Dec. 17. The outdoor shopping center recently underwent a $ 1 billion renovation.
The stores will showcase Gerard Darel’s Parisian aesthetic with vintage furnishings fused with modern elements unique to the New York and Los Angeles locales. Both boutiques will carry the full range of women’s ready-to-wear, handbags, shoes and accessories.
The brand, which was founded in 1971 by Danielle and Gerard Darel, made its entry into the U.S. market via Bloomingdale’s shop-in-shops at 20 locations. Today it is sold in more than 50 countries, in more than 500 boutiques and shop-in-shops worldwide.
The label has amassed a celebrity following including Angelina Jolie, Jessica Alba, Olivia Palermo, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Halle Berry. Street Signs: ‘Friendly’ Sneakersnstuff Rolls Out Welcome Mat in New York

Erik Fagerlind, who cofounded the specialty sneaker chain Sneakersnstuff with Peter Jansson in 1999, says 80 percent of its business now comes from e-commerce sales — up from 50 percent five years ago. But physical retail remains a significant part of its growth strategy outside of home country of Sweden, having planted shops in London, Paris, Berlin and now New York.
“In a world where everything is available and accessible, you have to provide a little bit more than product,” Fagerlind said. “You have to provide the service to be relevant with your consumer.”
Sneakersnstuff will bring its popular concept to New York in early December. The 3,500-square-foot shop will be located in the Meatpacking District, designed by Jenny Askenfors of Bofink Design Studio and feature a basement bar. Wil Whitney, who has deep roots in the New York skate and streetwear scene — he was a former manager at Stüssy, helped start Nom de Guerre, a men’s wear brand and Brooklyn shop that closed in 2010, and most recently worked for Noah — will manage the boutique. There are plans to open a Los Angeles flagship in 2018.

Sarah Jessica Parker to Open New York Pop-up Shop

Sarah Jessica Parker’s SJP by Sarah Jessica Parker brand will open a New York pop-up for the holiday season.
To be located at 640 Fifth Avenue with an entrance at 52nd Street, the 1,600-square-foot shop will sell an assortment of shoes — including styles reissued from the brand’s 2014 launch collection.
SJP by Sarah Jessica Parker’s line of little black dresses and handbags will also be on sale.
The shop is to be open on Black Friday, Nov. 24, and remain open through Dec. 3. Parker is expected to periodically drop into the store to greet shoppers.
“Having a home in New York for our SJP Collection has been only a seeming fantasy since we launched our brand almost four years ago.​ So it is with unbridled excitement that we share the news that we have indeed found that home, right off Fifth Avenue, in the heart of Midtown,” Parker said.

British Jewelry Designer Shaun Leane’s Personal Archive to be Auctioned at Sotheby’s New York

SHAUN’S SHOWCASE: The personal collection of British jewelry designer Shaun Leane is set to go under the hammer at Sotheby’s New York in December.
The designer said the collection represents “a level of creative freedom that has no parallel today and a time when jewelry, performance art and fashion fused as one. It has prompted questions in my own mind as to the important role the collection still has to play in conversations surrounding the relationship between these vital creative industries.”
He’s hoping the auction will address the questions he asked himself when making the jewels: “Is it art? Is it fashion? Is it jewelry?”
The sale is part of the auction house’s “A Life of Luxury” series, and will see 45 bespoke pieces thrust under the spotlight. Leane made the pieces for Alexander McQueen, his old friend and colleague of 17 years, for the latter’s shows and for Givenchy, and for clients such as Daphne Guinness, Isabella Blow, Kate Moss and Sarah Jessica Parker.

Why Supreme Opened a Second New York Store

NEW YORK — After more than 20 years of being in business, Supreme’s Manhattan store was beginning to bust at the seams.
The streetwear brand had alleviated the lines and crowds with a new release system — customers no longer need to camp out as they put their name on a list and enter the store during a designated time slot — but demand for the product has continued to increase, which is why the team opted for a 3,000-square-foot store in Brooklyn at 152 Grand Street between Bedford Avenue and Berry Street. On Thursday morning, when the shop opened to the public, Mayor Bill De Blasio commemorated the occasion by cutting the ribbon, which was appropriately covered with the Supreme logo.
“The truth is we maxed out on the Manhattan space. We were at capacity,” said Angelo Baque, Supreme’s former brand director who started his own creative agency but still oversees art direction for the company. “We couldn’t serve any more customers or sell more items.”

Brett Johnson to Open Store in New York

Brett Johnson is taking the plunge into retail.
The designer, who launched his eponymous men’s wear collection in 2013, will open his first store in SoHo on Thursday.
The unit at 109 Mercer Street between Prince and Spring Streets, will have 1,600 square feet of selling space and around 1,400 square feet devoted to showrooms and offices. There will be a soft opening this week and a grand-opening party is scheduled for Oct. 12.
Johnson, who was formerly based in Virginia, has relocated to New York to be closer to the business.
“For us, it’s just easier to control everything from out of the store,” he said. “Our clientele is primarily based in New York, so it just made sense.”
Johnson, the son of Black Entertainment Television founders Robert and Sheila Johnson, got his start designing his own interpretation of the Nike Air Force One sneakers and then branched out into apparel. The Brett Johnson line of outerwear, knitwear, woven shirts and trousers are all manufactured in Florence.
The collection has been sold at Neiman Marcus as well as a handful of specialty stores in the U.S. He said the best-selling items are outerwear and knitwear, but the store will also offer made-to-measure, a category that

About 40 Garment Center supporters helped to stall plans to set that plan in motion, by staging another press event days before an Aug. 21 City Planning Commission meeting.

Exclusive: Natalia Vodianova’s Fabulous Fund Fair Comes to New York

Natalia Vodianova’s star-studded annual Fabulous Fund Fair is coming for New York.
Vodianova’s Naked Heart Foundation will throw its fourth annual Fabulous Fund Fair this October, and for the first time the charitable bash will be held in New York. AmfAR is a first-time partner with the Naked Heart Foundation for the Halloween-themed event, which will take place on Oct. 28. Aside from the Halloween timing, the event promises to be “inspired by” artist Jeff Koons.
The first Fabulous Fund Fair was held in London in 2015, usually during London Fashion Week. A typically celebrity- and model-heavy event, guests have included Stella McCartney, Kristin Scott Thomas, Doutzen Kroes, Liv Tyler, Lara Stone, Baptiste Giabiconi, Toby Huntington-Whiteley, Yasmin and Amber Le Bon, Justine Skye and Corinne Bailey Rae.
Karlie Kloss played cohost with Vodianova for this past February’s event, which raised $ 585,000. Tickets and more information, including location, for this fall’s New York event will be released in the coming months.
Vodianova founded Naked Heart, which benefits children with special needs, in 2004.

Off-White, Monse to Design Costumes for New York City Ballet

New York City Ballet will soon mark the sixth installment of its Fall Gala, with costumes by an unconventional group of designers.
Monse’s Fernando Garcia and Laura Kim, Off-White’s Virgil Abloh, Tsumori Chisato and Jonathan Saunders have been paired with choreographers, working in tandem to create original works set to premiere at the Sept. 28 event.
Monse will work with New York City Ballet principal dancer Lauren Lovette to create costumes for her second choreographic work for the company. Chisato has been paired with NYCB resident choreographer Justin Peck. Abloh will design costumes for a new piece by choreographer Gianna Reisen. Saunders — designing ballet costumes independently of DVF, where he is chief creative officer — has been paired with NYCB soloist Troy Schumacher, who is creating his third choreographic work for the company.
Sarah Jessica Parker has reprised her role as the gala’s event chair. The fashion gala was conceived by Parker in 2012. Each year, the actress, designer and producer wrangles fashion designers for the costuming task. Past participants have included Thom Browne, Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen, Carolina Herrera, Marques’Almeida, Valentino, Olivier Theyskens and Dries Van Noten, among others.

Plus-Size Retailer Torrid to Showcase at New York Fashion Week

TORRID HITS THE RUNWAYS: Torrid, which designs and retails apparel, lingerie, swimwear, accessories and footwear for the plus-size woman, is the first plus-size women’s fashion brand to present at NYFW: The Shows as part of IMG. The runway show will take place Sept. 12.
The catwalk will be a showcase for the brand’s third annual Model Search competition, serving as the semifinal competitive round for the top 10 finalists. Selected by a panel of judges who include “Project Runway” winner Ashley Nell Tipton, celebrity makeup artist Priscilla Ono and model Candice Huffine, the finalists will walk the runway before going on to a third and final round of competition, where the winner will be selected by Torrid friends and fans.
Torrid’s model search kicked off in May, with online submissions followed this summer by live casting in Los Angeles, Seattle, Houston and Atlanta. The retailer has also extended its search to Canada for the first time, with a live casting in Ontario. Last year, 10,000 women applied. The winner will have the title “Face of Torrid 2018” and will receive a Torrid modeling contract and wardrobe. Kenneth Jay Lane Dies in New York at 85

Costume jewelry designer Kenneth Jay Lane, 85, died in his New York apartment.
It had not been determined whether he died Wednesday evening or Thursday morning, according to Chris Sheppard, executive vice president of Kenneth Jay Lane Inc.
After attending school at the University of Michigan and Rhode Island School of Design, the Detroit native made his way to New York where he worked on Vogue’s art team in 1954 before venturing into design at Delman Shoes. He later worked for Roger Vivier at Christian Dior before striking out on his own in 1961. As a resourceful young designer, Lane repurposed some of the scrap leather that were not used for Vivier-approved heels and wrapped them around bangles that he has bought from Lamstons, a five-and-dime-type store. Accenting footwear with jewels piqued an interest in costume jewelry design.
Lane changed the landscape of costume jewelry, adding souped-up color, drama, luxury and a wide variety of ethnic motifs, and making it exclusive. Many of his customers combined his pieces with their “real” jewels…and it was often impossible to tell the difference. As he once put it, “Our jewelry is designed for people who want to be noticed.”

Independents Upbeat at New York Men’s Trade Shows

NEW YORK — Retailers at the men’s trade shows here this week had one primary category on their minds: sportswear.
Gone are the days when buyers scoured the fairs for new tailored clothing labels. As stores, particularly independents, continue to battle a disinterested consumer, macroeconomic factors and the growing power of Amazon, executives were mainly looking to pick up new casualwear brands to complement their existing offerings.
The good news is that the formula seems to be working: Most independents interviewed said business has picked up slightly and they’re keeping their fingers crossed the trend will continue.
Ken Giddon, president of New York’s Rothmans, noted that thanks to a successful pop-up with Psycho Bunny — “our best pop-up ever” — the store had “a really good June.”
“We’re flexible enough to keep bobbing and weaving,” he added.
For the men’s specialty store, that means de-emphasizing tailored clothing and keeping customers interested by featuring a rotating series of pop-up shops. “It’s part of our model now,” Giddon said. “It works to always have something fresh.”
He said “tailored clothing is becoming a smaller part of the business, but we’re growing other parts,” especially sportswear. He especially liked Stitch Note’s short-sleeve wovens, Benson and Rodd & Gunn’s sportswear,

Raf Reigned at New York Fashion Week: Men’s

Raf saved the week.
Designer Raf Simons’ “Blade Runner”-inspired spring show in an alley in Chinatown Tuesday night was undoubtedly the highlight of an otherwise lackluster New York Fashion Week: Men’s, which also was boosted by the inclusion of Hugo Boss for the second time. But because in large part to the ongoing the lack of many other high-profile designers, the latest edition was perhaps the weakest of the last five.
The list of missing names — Tommy Hilfiger, Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein, Michael Kors, Thom Browne, Joseph Abboud, John Varvatos, Tim Coppens and John Elliott — was seemingly longer than those who opted to participate.
The scarcity of marquee names also impacted the number of overseas buyers and editors who attended — even though the editors’ expenses have often been paid by the brands or the CFDA in the past. And even those who did make the trip essentially skipped the last day of shows on Thursday, which had more spread-out schedule of lesser-known names such as Luar and C2H4.
Despite the challenges, the organizers remain committed to the idea of a separate men’s week.

Cole Haan Enlists Justin Peck to ‘Choreograph’ New York City Ballet Campaign

Dancers from the New York City Ballet, along with company choreographer-in-residence Justin Peck, are lending an animated touch to Cole Haan’s newest campaign.
Peck, flanked by corps de ballet member Gretchen Smith and principal dancers Amar Ramasar, Megan Fairchild and Sara Mearns, leap and bound in branded GIFs and still images — portraying the brand’s Grand Evolution, Grand Motion and Studio Grand collections.
Cole Haan has worked with Smith, Fairchild and Mearns since 2014. The campaign marks its first partnerships with Peck and Ramasar.
Peck noted that the GIF medium proved challenging to choreograph. “It was a little tricky, especially the shots that involved all five of us — it was a really great challenge. The GIFs are super fun to make, we ended up kind of learning as we went because GIFs have very short windows of time to display movement. We had to find the right pacing of movement so it looked fluid and coherent.”
The choreographer is in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., for the company’s annual residency at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center. This summer he will spend time in San Francisco to work with the San Francisco Ballet while also workshopping movements for the Broadway revival of “Carousel.”

Kay Unger New York Repositions Dress Line for Better-Priced Market

Kay Unger New York, which is licensed to Group J.S. International, is undergoing a makeover.
The dress brand, which for the past year has been geared toward the bridge-designer area, is being repositioned as a better updated dress collection. The company has lowered its price points to be more competitive in the dress market.
Starting in spring 2018, retail prices will range from $ 168 to $ 395.
“We want to continue the legacy of Kay Unger,” said Cynthia Amaro, sales director. Unger stepped down from the company bearing her name in 2012 to focus on her philanthropic and creative endeavors. She isn’t involved in the dress brand.
At the time of her departure, Kay Unger New York — cofounded by Unger and Rob Feinberg in 1995 — was generating about $ 30 million in wholesale volume in its Kay Unger and Phoebe Couture collections, selling to such stores as Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, Nordstrom, Bloomingdale’s and Lord & Taylor, and 20 international markets. Unger’s brand, which was sold to Alex Evenings, was later sold to ACI Licensing in early 2016, which licensed Group J.S. a little over a year ago.

Rihanna Brings Fenty Back to New York Fashion Week

Au revoir, Proenza. Adieu, Rodarte. Ta-ta, Thom Browne. While several high-profile American brands have decided to abandon New York Fashion Week for Paris, at least one major international name is doing the opposite and bringing her show back to town: Rihanna.
After two seasons showing her Fenty Puma by Rihanna collection in Paris, WWD has learned that Rihanna is heading back to New York Fashion Week, where she launched the line with her first show for fall 2016.
Rihanna was unavailable for comment but Puma issued this statement: “After two successful seasons showing during Paris Fashion Week, Rihanna has decided to return to New York and show her Fenty Puma by Rihanna spring 2018 collection during NYFW, making this the first time she will present during September NYFW.”
Details of the date and location of the show have yet to be confirmed, but if the past is any indication, it will be one of the late shows with an elaborate set. Rihanna presented her first Fenty Puma collection at 23 Wall Street, followed by spring 2017 at Paris’ Hôtel Salomon de Rothschild, and most recently at Bibliothèque Nationale de France for fall. Uber inadvertently underpaid New York City drivers for over two yearsUber generally takes a commission from its drivers after deducting taxes and some fees, but it instead took a higher percentage from its New York City drivers using the full fare before accounting for sales taxes and fees, according to the Wall Street Journal, which first reported the news. “We are committed to paying every driver every penny they are owed – plus interest – as quickly as possible,” Rachel Holt, Uber’s regional general manager for U.S. and Canada, said via email. All New York City drivers under the 2014 agreement would be eligible for a refund, regardless of whether they are still active or not, as long as they completed an Uber ride, the Journal report said.

Huntsman Unveils Larger Bespoke Salon in New York

NEW YORK — Custom clothing is one of the rare hot-ticket items in American men’s wear these days, and with more than 167 years of experience creating bespoke clothing on the famed Savile Row in London, Huntsman wants to carve out a bigger piece of the pie in the U.S.
In February, the company opened a small appointment-only salon at 130 West 57th Street here, a multiuse building between Sixth and Seventh Avenues. This week it invited customers in to see a new space in the same building that is three times larger and includes the addition of a cutter from London who will be housed in the location permanently.
Additionally, the brand has hired veteran men’s wear executive Edward Turco as director of its U.S. operations. Turco most recently was corporate custom manager for Loro Piana in the U.S., was president of Burberry Tailored Clothing and also spent time at the former Hartmarx Corp.
Pierre Lagrange, the Belgian hedge fund manager and cofounder of GLG Partners, who purchased Huntsman in 2013, made a visit to the location — dubbed a pied-à-terre — to meet customers and christen the new space this week.

Project Teaming With New York Men’s Day

The trade shows are not about to let the runway shows get all the attention.
So Project has linked with New York Men’s Day, the official start of New York Fashion Week: Men’s, to get in on the action.
The trade show will host a showcase outside of Dune Studios on Water Street in lower Manhattan on Monday, July 10 during the afternoon session of NYMD from 4:30 to 6 pm. The trade show will bring five of its brands — Michael Bastian, Thaddeus O’Neil, Faherty, W.R.K. and M. Singer — who will each show five looks from their spring collection in a live presentation in the park area outside Dune. There will also be a DJ and drinks, so the event is sure to draw some fashionistas searching for libations before the Todd Snyder show at 7 p.m.
Erik Ulin, president of Project, said, “Supporting up-and-coming brands and designers is an important part of our mission and something we strongly believe in. In this second edition of our partnership with NYMD, we are adding a strong roster of brands from our portfolio for a special presentation. Rafe New York founder Rafe Totengco is among the many designers using the summer holiday to multitask with travel and trunk shows. Totengco, who founded his company in 1997 with a few clutches, small bags and some belts, found a niche with his shell-inlay minaudières, which he introduced in 2009.
The bags, handmade in his native Philippines, retail for $ 650 — $ 1,200 at neimanmarcus.com, his own site and Les Suites in Paris, Tryano in Abu Dhabi, Rustan’s in the Philippines, Masari in Indonesia and Harvey Nichols in Dubai and Kuwait among others.

Meet Rehan Munir. He’s a 26-year-old med school grad from Pakistan who also happens to be a model.

Talk about a well-rounded guy, right?

Munir told HuffPost he hopes to do rotations in various hospitals across the U.S. to gain experience. He’s currently looking for housing in New York City, though ― a search he called “quite the ride.”

Some of Munir’s New York-based friends recommended he post an ad on Gypsy Housing, a closed Facebook group for people looking for housing and roommates, so earlier this month, Munir did just that.

“I’m Rehan and I’m looking to rent a furnished room on the Upper East Side, Upper West Side or Midtown Manhattan,” the post read

“I’m professional, friendly and easy to live with,” he added. “Most of all, cleanliness is of utmost priority to me. Please let me know if you have any leads.”

In response, the 26-year-old got way more than housing offers: 

“You can totally find a room for $ 800! Just will have more than a few roomies, so be warned,” one woman wrote. “Also, and I apologize if this is inappropriate, but umm … boyyyy you fine!” 

Others got real bold and straight-up proposed to Munir:

The post had 363 “likes” at last count and got plenty of media attention. Munir said he never expected such an “enthusiastic” response when he wrote the listing.

“It was pretty overwhelming,” he told HuffPost. “I wrote it and the next day I wake up and I see my post has been inundated with messages and it’s reached a number of blogs locally and internationally. I found it hilarious! The Internet is really an unpredictable place.” 

Though people have been “very helpful and kind” in helping Munir look for a room, he’s still mulling over his housing options. 

And to answer the question on seemingly everyone’s minds: Yes, your boy is single. 

“I’m single but trying to focus on my career at the moment,” he told HuffPost.

Nordstrom Staffers to Join Sunday’s Pride March on Fifth Avenue in New York

Nordstrom employees will be out in force at Sunday’s NYC Pride March in New York.
More than 200 staffers have signed up to march down Fifth Avenue, which is considerably more than last year’s turnout of 80. Supporters will be wearing Nordstrom Pride T-shirts that are also available on the company’s site and at select retail locations. Online shoppers can learn how net sales from the $ 24 T-shirt will be donated to the Human Rights Campaign Foundation. The short-sleeve black tops are imprinted with emojis that spell out “Love and peace to you.”
Organized by the nonprofit Heritage of Pride, this week’s Pride events are expected to attract more than two million people and will follow the theme “We Are Proud.” The event was started to commemorate the Stonewall riots of 1969, which started the modern LGBT movement. This year’s march will step off at noon with the help of grand marshals New York firefighter Brooke Guinan, Gay Men’s Health Crisis activist Krishna Stone and Chinese LGBT activist Geng Le.

Kalief Browder’s Brother Is Running For Mayor Of New York City

Akeem Browder still grieves over the deaths of both his younger brother Kalief and his mother Venida ― but he is carrying on their legacy and fighting for change by running for mayor of New York City.

Browder confirmed to HuffPost on Monday that he is officially throwing his name into the ring ― along with several other candidates ― and competing against incumbent NYC Mayor Bill De Blasio. Browder, 34, believes he is equipped and more ready than he’ll ever be for the campaign. 

“I lost my mother, I lost my brother,” he told HuffPost. “I have nothing left to lose.” 

Kalief Browder died by suicide in 2015 at the age of 22 just two years after he was released from Rikers Island. He was jailed there for three years, nearly two of which he spent in solitary confinement, for allegedly stealing a backpack and was both unable to make the $ 3,000 bail and unwilling to take a plea deal. He experienced brutal beatings from both inmates and guards all of which is documented in stories and interviews of those who spoke to him before his death. Browder’s mother, Venida, who had been one of Kalief’s biggest supporters, passed away in 2016 at the age of 63 from a “broken heart” after suffering from complications of a heart attack.

Now, Browder said he is ready for political office and and running on the Green Party ticket. He said that he plans to be a strong competitor of De Blasio, especially on issues of criminal justice, saying that he disagrees with many of the laws De Blasio has introduced during his time in office. He thinks De Blasio’s 10-year plan to shut down Rikers Island is “lip-service” ― Browder believes the process can be completed in three years instead. As a candidate, Browder said he also takes issue with DeBlasio’s stances on immigration, education and poverty around the city. 

“It’s not a personal vendetta why I’m running for mayor but if we’re having someone represent the people, it better be someone who isn’t far removed from the people and better understands the people so they can better their lives,” Browder said. “Do what’s right by the people or get out of office, get out of the way of people who want to try and make a change.” 

As mayor, Browder said he plans to prioritize issues of criminal justice, such as identifying better ways to decrease criminalization, increase resources to inmates with mental illnesses and finding more effective ways for re-entry. He also plans to focus on homelessness and better managing the city’s public spending to allocate funds to those most in need. 

“I’ve been homeless before,” he said. “We as New Yorkers still criminalize and monopolize the homeless. To me that’s pathetic and I want to make a change, not just with the homeless but those who come from jail. There’s very little thought put into how we appropriate funds for people coming home and re-entering society.” 

Browder, who said he is a long-time activist, has been involved in several grassroots political projects. He helped to create the New York chapter for Black Lives Matter and the Shut Down Rikers campaign, and sits on an independent New-York based commission around criminal justice. He also helped to establish the Kalief Browder foundation in his brother’s memory. 

Ultimately, it’s Browder life experiences, struggles and successes that he believes make him best-suited to be mayor.   

“These candidates are far removed from the problems we face in New York,” he said. “They don’t understand what we go through. It takes someone who has been impacted by the law and justice system and has the info, knowledge and drive to reel it back in and put it back into the right channels.”

James Franco made his first appearance as the face of Coach’s forthcoming men’s fragrance wearing a navy intarsia sweater with a Space Shuttle motif — and talking about the “sleazy New York of the Seventies” and its then “burgeoning porn industry.”
The actor, whose face broke into a big smile the minute he addressed a press gathering on Monday morning in Manhattan, was referring to the yet-to-be-released HBO series “The Deuce,” in which he plays twins involved in that industry.
Coach unveiled a short commercial and print ad lensed by Steven Meisel, picturing Franco leaning against a vintage car with the Manhattan skyline in the background.
“The shoot was interesting,” Franco demurred, before sitting down to a three-course breakfast perfumed with cardamom, kumquat and geranium, which are among notes in the scent, produced under license by Inter Parfums SA.
The event fell on a special day for Victor Luis, chief executive officer of Coach Inc. “Today is my 11th anniversary at Coach,” he told the crowd, introducing Joshua Schulman, president and chief executive officer of the Coach brand, who started work that very morning and was toting a seating plan for the brand’s vast offices in a futuristic office tower at Hudson Yards.

Loewe Craft Prize Comes to New York

CRAFT MAGIC: Jonathan Anderson continued the tour of the Loewe Foundation Craft Prize exhibition in New York on Thursday. The exhibit started in April in Madrid with a showcase of the 26 finalists of the 4,000 applicants for the inaugural addition of the Craft Prize and is now in New York at the Chamber Gallery through June 6.
“I’ve wanted to do this project since I joined Loewe,” said Anderson, who’s also shooting his Loewe campaign while he’s in town. “It’s really important to support crafts people like this.” The lineup featured work from various disciplines: Pottery by Sangwoo Kim of South Korea, gold and silversmithing by Robert Baines of Australia, lacquering by Igawa Takeshi of Japan, embroidery by Leo Chiachio and Daniel Giannone of Buenos Aires, weaving by Anne Low of Vancouver, with whom Anderson is collaborating on an upcoming project, and the winning work of wood carving by Ernst Gamperl of Munich, Germany.

The New York Times Will Offer A Special Section For Kids This Weekend

The New York Times announced on Thursday that it will be offering a special section for kids on Mother’s Day. Offering a mix of stories related to news, arts, science, travel sports, opinion, and food, it will appear in the Sunday, May 14 edition of the print newspaper.

According to the press release announcing the the special section, “Readers will not only have fun, but will learn some new tricks, including how to write a newspaper story; how to win an argument with your parents; how to make the best homemade slime imaginable (written by a 13 year-old!); how to bake a chocolate chip cookie pizza; how to nail the spelling bee; how to go big with a 16-year-old aspiring Olympic snowboarder; how to design your own superhero (with help from Marvel); how to make a killer paper airplane (with help from NASA); how to make your own crossword puzzle (with help from Will Shortz), and much more.”

There’s also an article called “How Did You Get Your Cool Job” featuring Misty Copeland, Kamala Harris and more. Additionally, the Kids section will include a child-friendly version of the newspaper’s “Truth is Hard” brand campaign.

The kids’ section is the third special print-only section following the “Puzzle Spectacular” in December and the excerpt of The Underground Railroad that ran in in August. 

While the content is aimed at kids ages nine to 12, many adults on Twitter are pretty pumped about the announcement.

Palace to Open New York Store

Palace is making its way to New York.
The skate brand, which is headquartered in London, took to Instagram to post a cryptic video earlier this week with the date “5.5.17” spinning against a city backdrop. And today the brand confirmed it would open in New York with another Instagram video featuring Jonah Hill, a Chihuahua, a robot and a dancing Palace logo.
Palace was founded by former skater Lev Tanju in 2009. Tanju opened a London shop in 2015 and he’s created a strong following with his graphic logo and collaborations with brands including Adidas and Reebok.

Round Two to Open New York Store

Round Two is bringing its popular retail concept to New York.
The secondhand store, which allows customers to buy, sell and trade vintage along with modern apparel — consider it the Beacon’s Closet of streetwear — will open in Manhattan this summer. This comes after a successful pop-up held late last year at Procell, a vintage store on the Lower East Side.
Co-owners Sean Wotherspoon, Chris Russow and Luke Fracher have yet to lock down a location, but customers can expect the same lively atmosphere they’ve cultivated at their Los Angeles shop on Melrose. Shoppers regularly line up outside of the store, which is stocked with Nike sneakers, pieces from Supreme, band T-shirts and vintage items from Guess, Ralph Lauren and Tommy Hilfiger.
“People are drawn to the pace of the store,” said Justin Esposito, Round Two’s creative marketing director. “Every single day there’s new inventory. People are always coming in to resell us stuff.”
Wotherspoon, Russow and Fracher opened their first Round Two location in Richmond in 2013 and in 2015 introduced the Los Angeles location, which is frequented by celebrities and influencers including Kendall Jenner, Migos, DJ Khaled and Lil Yachty. Chrome Hearts Opens Second New York City Store in the West Village

CHROME FINISHES: Twenty-one years after Chrome Hearts opened its first New York store on the Upper East Side, the Los Angeles brand has found a more spacious downtown one.
While its three-story Upper East Side townhouse is now a Madison Avenue fixture, the West Village location is a new attraction in a neighborhood where a flurry of specialty stores have exited in recent weeks. The 16,000-square-foot location offers an assortment of customized furniture, pairing ebony wood with metal and leather. Visitors will find a spiral staircase to a showroom that spotlights the various lifestyles to which Chrome Hearts caters. From custom garage aspects to a sports corner, there will also be Baccarat chandeliers and a Chrome Hearts-adorned chef’s kitchen.
Chrome Hearts executives plan to make the space ever-changing. For the opening, executives decided on a bean bag chair room, a 14-seat dinner table, a 13-foot stuffed leather dinosaur with sterling spikes and a 150-pound chainmaille American flag with pavé diamonds and engraved with the Pledge of Allegiance. Shoppers will also find the company’s more classic items and accessories.

A recent Humans of New York subject is the perfect case in point. The anonymous young woman, who was featured as part of HONY’s Colombia series, candidly shared how acknowledging her anxiety helped her manage it better.

“I used to try to hide it. I would log off social media. I wouldn’t answer calls,” she told HONY photographer Brandon Stanton. “I thought that if nobody knew, it didn’t exist. But the more I talk about my problem, the more I realize that other people experience similar things. So I’m trying to express it more.

The woman also explained that the pressure she felt to perform well in school led to anxiety and panic attacks, which held her back creatively and academically. An instructor then offered her some sage wisdom after admitting she was dealing with the mental health issue.

“I had a great teacher who told me: ‘Instead of letting anxiety keep you from doing your art, let it be the thing that motivates your art,’” she said.

In typical HONY feel-good fashion, the post got an overwhelmingly positive response. Commenters left messages of support for the woman, encouraging her to continue seeking professional help and applauding her openness about mental health.

“Anxiety can be so debilitating and misunderstood,” Facebook user Meg Wallick wrote on the photo. “Thank you for sharing your experiences. It helps the rest of us know we aren’t alone.”

Nearly 18 percent of Americans are living with an anxiety disorder. The mental health issue is an incredibly common medical problem. Yet research shows there’s a good deal of judgment and shame surrounding it ― which is both self-inflicted and comes from people in society who don’t understand.

It’s this stigma that often keeps those experiencing the condition from speaking up about what they’re going through. However, advocates stress that talking about it is vital in eliminating negative perceptions around mental health.

We commend this HONY subject for doing just that. Can we get more of this?
